Live chat with WR Denarius Moore on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
By Steve Corkran
Wednesday, September 28th, 2011 at 11:05 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Wide receiver Denarius Moore is the most exciting rookie the Raiders have had in quite some time. He burst on the scene early in training camp by making the spectacular look routine every day in practice.
People began taking notice once they were able to see Moore’s exploits in Oakland’s four exhibition games. Once the regular season arrived, Moore caught the attention of people outside the Bay Area.
Now, he is on everyone’s radar, if not their fantasy teams. I am pleased to announce that Denarius Moore, a fifth-round pick out of Tennessee, has agreed to take part in a live chat Thursday from 3:30 p.m. until he runs out of answers.
So, please, sign in early, submit your questions and enjoy what the engaging receiver has to say on an array of topics. If he handles this assignment the way he does his roles with the Raiders, it’s sure to be a smashing success.

Rob… why even answer that foolish talkmm man… he’s a nut…. never talks about raider football… only wants to talk about the devil al Davis. .. its pathetic man… but for some reason people go down to his level and actually try to make sense of his gibberish. …
================================================
Actually he is bad for the team. Very bad. So is the other moron, Koolkell. And let me explain why. When you take the culpability of who is actually responsible for losses, i.e. the players, and continually put it onto Davis, it removes the culpability of the players who are actually responsible. Not Al Davis who is 3000 miles from the field. In other words, if someone walks into a school and shoots 20 kids, and then turns around and says “It wasn’t me, it was the guns fault,” it’s the same principle. Put the culpability on the culprit. If McClain cannot tackle Tomlinson, blame McClain. If McClain cannot tackle anyone, then at the end of the year, you can blame Davis.

First off, it’s not the “Tuck Rule”. It’s called the “Snow Job.” For a multitude of reasons. Remember that.

Remember when we were all laking about what a tough schdule we had? Trying to figure out how many wins we could pull out. I dont see anyone on there that this offense cant score against. Not that we win every game. But it looks good.

i have one little issue w/ satele’s hit. there were two guys standing there, waiting to be blocked. he chose the smallest and furthest away. luckily moore just flew by the bigger and closer guy. i will be the first to say i’m not really a big satele fan. it just kinda seemed like he went for the easy kill. the only reason i could see it is if he thought the play was going outside, which is a distinct possibility. it goes fast and maybe he thought he was taking out the outside man for denarious. just an observation that kinds bugged me b/c like everyone, i got juiced when i saw it, but when i noticed it was satele, i was a little surprised. maybe i’m on the verge going “sullivan” on satele. uh-oh. get ready for countless daily rips of satele.
====================================
Nah, I don’t see it that way. The bigger guy isn’t nimble enough to get Moore. Besides, I think he got the guy that was closest to him, and therefore closer to catching Moore since Satele was down the field a bit.

It’s funny. I don’t know why people respond to me so much, either. I’ll just make a simple little point on whatever topic is being discussed, and I’ll get 50 responses. Some people in here make excellent points, and nobody ever responds to them. I sneeze, and the whole board gravitates around me. I don’t understand it, either. I can’t help it if people think what I’m saying has a strong impact, but for some reason they do. It’s just something you guys are going to have to sort out yourselves.

And that’s the thing. It’s funny. Most of the Davis worshipers agree with me. They know I’m right. They just don’t want me to talk about it. Well, sorry. That just aint how it works.

The play action because of the run game is making them look better too. Likin it
September 29th, 2011 at 1:01 am
This line is playing AMAZINGLY well! And with basically a 3rd round pick, a 2nd round pick, and 3 castoffs. Great coaching job done there. We need to keep that coach long-term. Campbell is NOT the fastest decision maker or release in the game by a LONG shot and only has been sacked 2 times. HUGE running holes for the RBs.
Probably our strongest unit or probably 1B with the RBs being the strongest. Weakest unit right now….the LBers…or maybe Secondary…which means they gotta really step up for our next opponent or they’ll be MAJORLY exploited.

I haven’t seen a rookieet alone a wideout come in like Moore did this year…. Let’s not forget ford came on midseason last year but be didn’t shine like Moore has since he strapped on a chinstrap for us…. My motto has been if u got it from day one u will most likely be good ur whole career…. I fully expect Moore to be our best wideout for years…. McFadden and Moore are the type of players that can help Jason Campbell find his mojo…. With that being said I expect the pats to stack the box and testing Campbells ability to audiblize and make the right throws to beat them…. If Campbell and Moore along with other recievers learn how to play the defense in those situations then just maybe is when we become very very dangerous… It hasn’t came yet but give them a little more time then we become a 2 dimensional offense that would have the fastest reciever/ running back combo and the greatest show on the infield dirt….. Did u know we r the only NFL team now that shares a stadium with an MLB team ? Give us a potent squad that can entertain us and we can fill up the seats and start to discuss a new stadium…. In my dreams…. Goodnight gents

Action Jackson mentioned about possibly being part of the reason that slowed Jacoby Ford’s progress last year. You can see he’s not holding back with D. Moore. There shouldn’t be any hesitation once Ford is back. Ford and Moore should be the Raiders starting WRs. Hagen deserves to be #3 with his sure hands. The others can get in line after that.
Campbell has been very smart with the ball. If he can continue to play with this much confidence, we can go places. Raider Nation complained about how often he would under throw the WRs. He’s started to fix that problem. Moore’s TD on Buffalo and the beautiful strike to Bush down the sideline to help seal the game vs. the Jets. Even throughout the game, his throws down field vs. Cromatie caused multiple PI calls. Very, very effective. Seems like a whole different QB back there. Give our Offensive line credit for giving him time.

Wow, that’s really nit picking! It was a great block. It helped get the job done. I think you should focus on the positive and realize maybe Satele is more concerned about DBs, Safeties, having the speed to catch Moore from behind rather than DL or LBs. Heck, if that was a kill shot, maybe the DB doesn’t even come back into the game.

I HOPE New England stacks the box against us for two reasons; one, because if DMac gets to the second level against a stacked box, he’s gone and two, it just makes the play-action pass (which Campbell is very good at) that much more effective.
That said, I’m not as much worried about our ability to score points as I am our ability to stop the Patriots. If it’s late in the fourth quarter and we’re not up by two scores it’s going to be white-knuckle time.
September 29th, 2011 at 4:31 am
the opening spread on this game was ne by 4 1/2. that alone was eye opening. not nearly as large a spread as u would have predicted a few weeks ago. it has since move down to 4. that means people are starting to believe that the raiders could be in this game. and i think the line is heavily influenced by the reputation of the patriots. they couldn’t have set it any lower. what this really means is that according to vegas, the raiders could very well win this game. i feel pretty strongly that they will. our offense is capable of running clock and occasionally striking downfield to cripple them. and our pass rush should force brady into those quick slants curls. but our physical lb’s will lay the wood to these guys. gronkowski is big and he’s a matchup problem for most teams. but our lb’s are bigger than most and can match up physically. and guys like welker and woodhead, while quick, can’t handle getting smashed by 260 lb ‘backers. plus i see guys like moss and scott dropping back into passing lanes, b/c they’re more mobile than most DE’s. and we may see some blitzes from boyd, huff, and branch. in fact, i’m excited about seeing tyvon flying in and laying a vicious hit to brady’s gut. bam! game changer!
September 29th, 2011 at 4:36 am
can u believe how exciting this game is feeling? i mean the patriots are coming into oakland, and i know most of us are feeling very amped at the distinct possibility that the raiders make the statement game of the year. this is fun.
and yes, sullivan is nervous. what the heck is he gonna do if the raiders win? oh yeah, he has already shown his hand. he will admit that the raiders are good and then go on and on for the next 5 or 6 years about al davis is about to dismantle the whole thing.
September 29th, 2011 at 4:40 am
We HAVE to be aggresive with their wideouts at the LOS.
If we learned anything from the Buffalo game it’s that you can’t line up five yards-plus off and expect to be able to cover the short pass.
Chuck ‘em and get ‘em off their routes and timing right away, and the passrush has that split-second extra to get pressure. It’s the key to stopping them, in my opinion.
September 29th, 2011 at 5:08 am
yes. man-to-man bump-and-run. just like al davis would draw it up. this game could shape up as a raider dream. a bigtime power run game featuring one of the fastest backs in football. deep strikes by a big-armed qb delivered to the fastest wr’s in football. physical front 7 play and big, physical cb play, paired w/ headhunting safeties. the raiders!

The Sox had an epic choke-job, and now we will complete the terrible week for New Englanders with a smashing victory, and leave them limping out of California.
What an amazing hour or two last night in baseball though. There is nothing like the energy of a Raider game in sports, but there is nothing like a last game of the season pennant race in baseball in sports either.
Too often, the last week or two of the NFL is mostly irrelevant, and there are boring, blowouts throughout the playoffs.

hey Raiderbuck, any chance you can cut and past that article here? I cant read it.

One of the central themes of the excellent ESPN Films documentary “Catching Hell” was that Cubs fans believed the Steve Bartman interference play was a sign that the 2003 version of the team was just as cursed as all of its predecessors. It wasn’t anything special; it was just the same old Cubs.
That same thought may have crossed the minds of Raiders fans this season. Over the past few years, Oakland’s front office has frequently stockpiled the roster with talented players, but that talent hasn’t led to a stockpile of wins. Instead, those players have consistently failed to perform up to their talent level. The scoreboard has shown some of those same inconsistencies so far this year. Victories over Denver and the Jets were both impressive achievements, but in between was a contest against the Buffalo Bills that saw Oakland get out to a 21-3 halftime lead and then give up 35 second-half points on the way to losing 38-35.
A stretch like that might make Oakland fans wonder if this is the year the Silver and Black finally turn the corner or if this is simply another instance of the same old Raiders, blowing games they have the talent to win.

Here you go…I actually do have an insider account…why? I really don’t know…
One of the central themes of the excellent ESPN Films documentary “Catching Hell” was that Cubs fans believed the Steve Bartman interference play was a sign that the 2003 version of the team was just as cursed as all of its predecessors.
But after doing detailed game tape and metric analysis, it is clear this team is not the same old Raiders. In fact, it looks like a bona fide playoff contender.
The obvious place to start is to note the play of Darren McFadden. He has always been a dominant player (he was every bit as good as Jamaal Charles on a per-game basis the past three years) but his early MVP-like start is finally getting him the acclaim he deserves as one of the NFL’s best running backs.
But space may be opening for McFadden because of the progress quarterback Jason Campbell has made in his second year in coach Hue Jackson’s system. Campbell ranks in the top 10 in the league in both Total QBR and in passer rating.
Campbell has also made zero bad decisions (defined as when a quarterback makes a mistake with the ball that leads to a turnover or a near turnover — such as a dropped interception or fumble recovered by the offense) this season, so it isn’t as if his numbers are the result of luck.
He’s not just throwing a bunch of safe passes, either — 31 percent of his throws have been of the vertical variety (vertical being defined as aerials thrown 11 or more yards downfield).
AP Photo/Jack Dempsey
Jason Campbell is off to a great start in his second season in Hue Jackson’s system.
That Campbell is gaining 11.8 yards per attempt (YPA) on those vertical throws is impressive enough (only five quarterbacks last year finished the season with a vertical YPA that high), but what makes it even more notable is that it has been largely achieved without the services of Louis Murphy, Jacoby Ford and Kevin Boss. All three have missed significant time because of injury and yet Campbell and the offense have continued to thrive.
One reason Campbell is having success on downfield passes is the superb job the Raiders’ blocking wall has done in protecting him. Oakland has allowed only two sacks this season (a total that is tied for the lowest in the NFL) and one of those occurred on a fluke play when McFadden tripped Campbell while trying to make a block.
That Oakland has achieved this total while having a second-year player (Jared Veldheer) at left tackle and a rookie (Stefen Wisniewski) at left guard speaks volumes for how well this group has been coached.
The improvements are not limited to the offensive side of the ball, however.
No team allowed more rushing yards in 2008-10 than the Raiders, but this year they’ve done a very good job of stopping the run. They are presenting the opposing team with an unfavorable blocking situation 56.8 percent of the time. Only three teams posted a 50 percent or higher total in this metric last year, so Oakland is on an elite pace here.
The Raiders’ pass defense is also holding up despite losing the overrated Nnamdi Asomugha to free agency. Oakland ranks tied for seventh in YPA allowed (6.9), 13th in passer rating allowed (85.3) and is one of only six teams with at least 10 sacks.
So what has caused this turnaround? There are two main reasons.
It starts with the Raiders’ front office/scouting department. Over the past three years, the team has drafted numerous quality starters (Wisniewski, Veldheer, Ford, Rolando McClain, Matt Shaughnessy) as well as a slew of talented depth players (Denarius Moore, Chimdi Chekwa, DeMarcus Van Dyke, Taiwan Jones, Lamarr Houston). Al Davis has taken a lot of heat in recent years for drafting JaMarcus Russell with the No. 1 pick in the 2007 draft, but very few front offices can match his team’s draft success rate over the past three years.
The second reason is Jackson. His hiring looks like a wise move on many levels. It gave Campbell a second season in the same system (something he had not had since high school) and allowed the team to tap into Jackson’s energy. He has the passion of a gospel preacher as well as a clear vision of what type of team he is trying to build.
And that, more than anything else, may be why this team is ready to break out. When talented young players are fired up to play for an enthusiastic coach, it can result in a lot of wins. For the 2011 Raiders, that formula could mean as many as 10 wins and a spot in the playoffs.

Anyone else think we should take a 15yd gimme and give Tom Brady a good hard shot driving him to the ground? Not a dirty shot to the knees or head blow but a good solid pile drive to the ground to give him something to think about. Rolando McClain’s known for his super slams,, might as well make good use of it this week.
September 29th, 2011 at 8:16 am
The key to getting to Brady is getting around his feet. Make him move out of his statue stance he likes to deliver the ball from. Make him rollout or dance in the pocket. He’s a bad decision maker when he tries to be the hero. Use his ego against him and force him to make a play. But under our terms, not his.

That’s exactly what Buffalo did. Played 7 DB’s and cleared the LB’s off the field in the 2nd half. Notice how they were able to get their hands around the ball and tip and create INT’s. You really can’t stop Brady, but you can make the throws a challenge to complete and if there is enough hands around the ball, it’ll make him less daring in certain situations.
Things Brady doesn’t like:
1) traffic around his feet, (worried about his knee)
2) hands up at the line, obscuring vision
3) hands on/around the ball, even on completed passes.
September 29th, 2011 at 8:54 am

The Patriots are a finnesse team. You don’t beat them with brute strength. It’s a mental game of cat and mouse. Defense has to do a good job masking presnap alignments and force Brady to call audibles all the time. From there, at the snap, it’s a chess match of being in the right spot to defend and limit the play.

From the Herald, Ian Rapaport
FOXBORO — Brandon Spikes spoke like a Patriot.
When asked about himself, he turned the focus on the team. On his increasing role, he said he plays when he’s called on. And on being a healthy scratch for the season opener, Spikes merely deferred to the coach’s decision and said he prepared as if he was going to play.
The 2010 second-round draft pick might be catching on.
To the Patriots [team stats] coaches who have monitored the mercurial, entertaining, free-spirited inside linebacker, this was a positive development. Reining in Spikes’ wide-ranging persona and redirecting it to football is a task that should pay off.
But what they will never change — and what they don’t want to change — is Spikes’ propensity for hitting, for taking on blockers, for drilling opposing running backs in the chest.
And as the Patriots gear up for Raiders running back Darren McFadden on Sunday in Oakland, Calif., Spikes might be the defense’s best option for containing the NFL’s leading rusher.
“We got a physical style of play,” Spikes said yesterday. “I want to come out and be physical, do what I do. I was brought here to help stop the run, and I’m just going to come out when my number’s called, be accountable and try to get the job done.”
No one says it’s easy to stop McFadden.
“He can do it all,” said Spikes, who has seven tackles in two games.
McFadden is a slashing, bruising runner, averaging 6.4 yards per rush. In the Raiders’ surprising win against the Jets, McFadden provided the key play with a 70-yard touchdown dash in a 171-yard performance.
“He can go the distance from anywhere,” Pats coach Bill Belichick said. “You just can’t ever relax on him.”
The NFL is filled with passing teams, and the league is on record pace in its aerial assault. The Raiders didn’t get the memo. Oakland still pounds the rock, doing so until it springs a big play — usually from McFadden.
“When you’re calling those runs, it’s because of something you see and something you feel you can execute,” Raiders first-year coach Hue Jackson said. “It’s just something that I truly believe in and is something that’s ingrained here.”
Oakland is one of four teams with more than 100 rushes, with an average of 5.5 yards per attempt. It’s a tall task for the Patriots defense, particularly the front seven, to force the Raiders to rely on the shaky right arm of quarterback Jason Campbell.
“In any game, if you can establish stopping the run and just force them to be one-dimensional, that’s a big thing,” Spikes said. “We pride ourselves on stopping the run, and we’re going to do whatever we can to get it done.”
Defensive tackles Vince Wilfork [stats] and Albert Haynesworth loom large in the new 4-3 scheme. Jerod Mayo is the defense’s signal-caller and the All-Pro, yet he is also an outside linebacker who plays away from the tight end. Mayo has thrived in space, blitzing and creating, even while dealing with the acclimation to a new unit. Mayo’s responsibilities have left Spikes in the middle, sorting through traffic and stuffing the run.Spikes is ready for McFadden and the Raiders. That hasn’t always been the case. He missed the final four regular-season games last year because of a league suspension and wasn’t quite himself in the playoff loss to the New York Jets [team stats]. This year, he was nursing an ankle injury through training camp and was inactive the first game while getting in shape.
Now, though, he’s ready.
“It’s going to be a good, physical game,” Spikes said. “Oakland’s always physical; they got some big guys up front. Their backs are downhill guys and they’re looking to make a play. They’re attacking. We want to attack.”
The Pats practiced in full pads yesterday for the first time since Sept. 7, perhaps to gear up for a smashmouth team. There is no way to simulate the challenge of McFadden in practice, though the Pats will try.
“We just want to be fundamentally sound all the way across the line,” Spikes said, “try to build a wall and get after it.”

Denarious, How do you plan on scoring 2 td’s this week? (because I know you will)
My guess is a 47 yd TD in double coverage on a ball that was not thrown well, But Moore adjusts accordingly to make the catch ala L. Fitzgerald. The second one will be a 12 yard TD on a quick slant or bubble screen.

FOXBORO — The fit was supposed to be a good one and yet, when it comes to Chad Ochocinco, the eye test tells you: square peg in a round hole.
That’s how it’s been eight weeks into a ride Ochocinco first described as heaven but now might fall into a different category. Naturally, all kinds of theories have been floated trying to explain why the wide receiver just can’t blend into the Patriots [team stats] offense and get with the program.
Initially, the NFL veteran was cut some slack because he wasn’t afforded the usual offseason camps to learn the system and get on the same page with quarterback Tom Brady [stats]. After all, this isn’t the kind of offense you can just pick up overnight; it’s not what you would call a paint-by-numbers kind of system.
But now, with a full training camp, tons of practice time and three games under his belt, Ochocinco still looks uncomfortable out there. So that excuse no longer cuts it or explains what we’re still seeing on the field.
In Sunday’s loss to the Buffalo Bills, Ochocinco’s failure to run a crisp route helped lead to one of Brady’s four interceptions. Then there was the dreaded drop on a sure touchdown in the fourth quarter. Yes, as we all know, Ochocinco had a perfectly thrown Brady pass slip right through his hands on the doorstep of the end zone.
So what gives?
Is it too hard for him, being a complementary part, as opposed to a guy who gets the ball on practically every throw, as was the case in Cincinnati? Is it too difficult for him to stay focused if he’s not the man and has to wait a long time between balls being thrown his way? Is that why Brady’s ball fell right through his hands? Because he’s been a rhythm player who’s now out of rhythm?
That’s a popular theory at the moment. Maybe there’s some validity to that notion, but it still doesn’t completely get him off the hook with running poor routes.
Oakland Raiders first-year coach Hue Jackson, who was Ochocinco’s position coach with the Bengals from 2004-06, put one more explanation on the table yesterday during a conference call with the local media.
Jackson, who said he “adores” Ochocinco, raised the personality issue. Since the outrageous, fun-loving, Twitter-centric wideout arrived in town, he has been tamed. His act has been put on mute both on and off the field. By the sound of it, Jackson believes that’s likely contributed to Ochocinco’s struggles thus far.
“When I came to Cincinnati, it was really early in his career, his second or third year. He was on the cusp of becoming a great player,” said Jackson, whose Raiders host the Patriots on Sunday. “What I tried to do is push him and take him to where he truly wanted to go. He wanted to be one of the best in the league. At that time, his time with me, there’s no question he was. He really worked at it. The way he studied videotape, the way he prepared, I let him have his own personality, because that’s Chad. You have to allow him to be him, to get the most out of him.”
There’s no question the Ochocinco who plays for Bill Belichick is a far cry from the Bengals version. Ochocinco still tweets, but after being scolded by former Pats linebacker great and current ESPN analyst Tedy Bruschi [stats], he’s cut that down to a certain extent. Let’s just say his former Bengals teammates might not recognize this Ochocinco, that’s how much he’s stifled his personality.
It’s just a little hard to swallow that letting Ochocinco go back to being a showman, and attention-grabber, will instantly morph him into someone who can once again hold onto a football and run a clean route. It’s hard to figure how those two things go hand-in-hand.
Ochocinco just seems extremely uptight and tense. He needs to loosen up and not play afraid to make a mistake.
Jackson believes Ochocinco will fight through his problems.
“When you’re used to having success, and things have gone for you the way his career has gone, I mean, it’s hard when you don’t see the light at the end of the tunnel,” Jackson said. “But one thing I know about him, he’s going to continue to work. He’ll do everything that’s asked of him.
He’s a tremendous pro. I’m sure he’s working (on) it. Eventually it will come off right for him. I just don’t want it to happen this week.”

SD – QB Philip Rivers playing injured?
Source: The San Diego Union-Tribune – Chris Jenkins
San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers (sternum) is playing with some discomfort, still feeling the effects of an illegal hit to the sternum he suffered in Week 2.
Analysis:
An injury would explain a lot. Rivers has been throwing more picks this year and doesn’t look quite the same on the football field. He only threw 13 interceptions last year, but has already tossed 6 of them through 3 games this year.

A lot of us have been hard on McLain this season…. more so after that LT catch and run where McLain ‘whiffed’ on the tackle. But check out this link, at the 8 second mark is the LT play. I didn’t notice this live but McLain was actually blitzing on that play, read it and peeled off and had he made the tackle, would have been a hell of a play.

He really worked at it. The way he studied videotape, the way he prepared, I let him have his own personality, because that’s Chad. You have to allow him to be him, to get the most out of him.”

Not that it matters 2 much, but here’s a Patsies latest injury report.
Patriots SS Patrick Chung (thumb) is “preparing to play” against the Raiders this week.
Chung was sorely missed in the loss at Buffalo last week. Although he’s pushing to play, Chung concedes that the decision will ultimately fall on the Pats’ medical staff. Chung did participate in a limited practice Wednesday, a positive sign.
Source: ESPN Boston
Aaron Hernandez (knee) was held out of Patriots practice Wednesday.
Hernandez told reporters early Wednesday that he’s shooting to play Sunday against Oakland, but the Pats don’t use players that don’t practice. It appears Hernandez has not yet been medically cleared to take the field. Regardless, the optimism suggests Hernandez will return sooner rather than later.

Interesting from JC off of raiders.com
Q: There’s a lot of buzz about this last week. Did you notice the change, like with Raider fans?
Jason Campbell: We try not to notice it because we have a lot to improve on as a team. We feel like we’ve got a long ways to go, the Patriots are coming in town and we know how quickly things can change. You win one, and you are the greatest teams in the world; you lose one, same old Raiders and that’s usually been said. Our mindset is to keep playing and keep getting better from week to week because we’re still a team that’s hungry, still a team that’s trying to get injured players back on the field; we’re still a team that didn’t complete a third down conversion last week and that’s something that can’t happen. So, there’s things we have to improve on – eliminate negative penalties, eliminate the personal foul penalties, so there’s a lot of things we have to improve on. So, we’re not trying to get caught up in things that have been said about our team. We appreciate the respect, but at the same time, we’ve got a ways to go.
