Lots to be sorted out on injury front

Three potential starters failed to practice for the second straight day and were listed as questionable by coach Hue Jackson following practice Friday.

Free safety Michael Huff (concussion), fullback Marcel Reece (ankle) and defensive end Matt Shaughnessy (shoulder) were regarded as tossups two days before the Raiders take on the New England Patriots at O.co Coliseum.

Huff walked slowly from the field wearing a baseball camp and long-sleeved white T-shirt. He hasn’t been spotted in the locker room this week during the media window. He actually got in some practice time Wednesday, but took of Thursday and Friday.

Asked about concussions sustained by Ricky Brown (also questionable) and Huff, coach Hue Jackson said he thought both had passed necessary tests but there were “still protocol issues.”

It’s conceivable both are still experiencing symptoms such as headaches and thus haven’t been cleared.

Also listed as questionable were wide receiver/return specialist Jacoby Ford (hamstring) who has practiced all week but said Thursday he hadn’t yet run at top speed. Ford even fielded a few punts Friday.

Listed as “out” were cornerbacks Chris Johnson (hamstring) and wide receiver Louis Murphy (groin) who will miss the first quarter of the season after surgery in training camp.

Among the players listed as questionable, the Raiders can probably best absorb the loss of Shaughnessy, given the depth on the defensive line and the performance against the New York Jets by defensive end Jarvis Moss.

If Reece can’t go at fullback, it means tight end Richard Gordon will get a look in some running formations as a lead blocker and Rock Cartwright could play in some other packages. Other are options are simply going without a fullback in three wide receiver, single-back sets.

Huff’s s replacement at single deep safety is likely Matt Giordano, but the bigger problem comes in the nickel and determining who gets primary coverage responsibilities on Wes Welker, currently the NFL’s most prolific receiver.

The following players were listed as probable and will face the Patriots:

Running back Darren McFadden (shoulder/groin), quarterback Jason Campbell (foot), linebacker Quentin Groves (quadriceps), cornerback Chimdi Chekwa (hamstring), safety Jerome Boyd (knee) and Giordano (shoulder). Campbell and Chekwa were limited in practice, the others participated fully.

It hasn’t been a great month for Seahawks line coach Tom Cable.

He’s watched his old team in Oakland look better without him, especially on the offensive line. He’s watched his new team in Seattle rank near the bottom in nearly every noteworthy offensive stat.

    Damn you Carnitas!

Let’s just blitz 7 guys on the first play. Send everything AND the kitchen sink at Brady. Hell, smack him in the face with it.

They may get 6 out of it but I’ll take my chances with Mallett for 59 minutes and spot ‘em a TD.

If you’re looking for a formula to slow down Brady and company, the best place to start is by looking at what has worked in the playoffs.

You’d want to look at their SB loss to the Giants, demolition at home vs the Ravens, and last year’s loss to the Jets.

Then you’d want to consider which elements of those approaches can be implemented effectively with our current personnel. You’d also want to consider how their offense has evolved into a more TE oriented approach.

I’d say the Raiders have a better offense at this point in time than any of the 3 aforementioned teams that took the Patsies out.

The Raider defense is another story entirely.

I believe the Jets threw a lot of zone at Brady and actually confused and rattled him. Not sure that’s an approach that would work with our personnel.

The Ravens were physically dominating and used a punishing LMclain to annihilate them. You know we’ll want to pound the rock and try to bring some pain on D.

The Giants used an extremely athletic and versatile DLine to harry Brady. He’s far from Superman when he’s forced to move his feet and unable to step up into a pocket. It’s essential to hit him a few times early and make him as uncomfortable as possible. We’ve got the horses to do this and we’ve got the DLine coach that knows how to get the job done.

Brady is so hard to stop not only because of his accuracy but also because of his smarts. The guy is one of the best at pre-snap reads. It’s very hard to out scheme him on defense simply because he’s so good at sitting in the gun and determining what he’s looking at and where he wants to go. With our deficiencies in zone and inability to conceal or time blitzes very well, don’t want to get into a chess match with Brady anyway.

This one is going to be mainly on the DLine. Hit Tommy boy a few times and stay in his face all day. The formula is there. If we get pressure up front, we can outscore these guys.

Collapse the pocket on Brady…give him nowhere to step up into. He’s not Big Ben — moving great distances laterally, and still able to strike. Brady is silky smooth in the pocket, and moving “slightly” left or right he is deadly accurate. Pinch him from the edges, and collapse the point of the pocket…that’ll do the trick.

The real test will be the quick-hitch slants and such. If somebody’s not on Welker, like right on top of him, Brady can hit him in an instant. Key is to not forgot about Gronkowski while thinking Welker’s the target every pass play.

You know Brady will test us deep, just to keep the Defense honest…but they butter their bread with Welker and Gronkowski short-mid-range, making Huff’s presence even more important.

I have a feeling he will. Brady says that Seymour promised to take it easy on him, but Big Rich can’t do that AND show NE what a mistake they made trading him. I think Seymour sees himself getting at least two sacks in this game.

I don’t trust Belicheat. I guess he has opened up to the media because NFL Network did a documentary about him and he probably was thrilled them not mentioning anything about him cheating in 2008. For all we know, Belicheat could still be cheating.
    ==================================================
You’re right, but keep in mind it’s only cheating if you get caught.

Belichick got caught in 2008, but I guarantee you he got away with a lot BEFORE that.

I can’t prove this, but I’m absolutely certain that Belichick’s greatest CHEAT occurred the week after the Tuck game, against the Steelers in the AFC championship game.

Go back and watch the tape of that game. Watch the Patriot defense. Somehow, they knew whether it was a pass or run, EVERY play.

Now I know Belichick is a master at identifying player habits or keys that can tip a play, but something else was going on that day.

Doubt he’s going to be able to flat out CHEAT the Raids, but you can bet he’s scrutinized our tape looking for any possible tips or keys in order to give his D an edge. Raider self review will be especially important this week.
