Terrelle Pryor loses his appeal of suspension
By Steve Corkran
Friday, September 30th, 2011 at 1:36 pm in Oakland Raiders.
The NFL just announced that it has “affirmed” the five-game suspension of Raiders rookie quarterback Terrelle Pryor, which means he won’t be able to practice with his teammates, work with his coaches or play in a game until the Raiders get past the Houston Texans game Oct. 9.
Pryor can be activated Oct. 10 and begin practicing at that point. He could play as soon as Oakland’s sixth game, which isn’t likely, given he hasn’t practiced much yet and the Raiders don’t have a need for a quarterback.
For now, Pryor will continue to work out with someone not on the coaching staff and learning the playbook.
Pryor said he has been instructed by coach Hue Jackson not to speak with the media.
Here’s the release from the league:
Commissioner Roger Goodell notified Terrelle Pryor today that the decision to suspend the Oakland Raiders’ quarterback for the first five games of the regular season for improperly manipulating the NFL’s eligibility rules has been affirmed. Pryor may be activated by the Raiders following their game at Houston on October 9.
Commissioner Goodell approved Pryor’s application for entry into this year’s NFL Supplemental Draft, which took place on August 22. He was selected in the third round of the supplemental draft by the Raiders, who forfeited their third-round selection in the 2012 Draft as a result. Pryor participated in the remainder of the Raiders’ training camp after his selection.
Following are excerpts from Commissioner Goodell’s decision on Pryor’s appeal:
“Based on Mr. Pryor’s actions, I believe it is a fair conclusion that he intentionally took steps to ensure that he would be declared ineligible for further college play and would be able to enter the NFL via the Supplemental Draft. Taken as a whole, I found that this conduct was tantamount to a deliberate manipulation of our eligibility rules in a way that distorts the underlying principles and calls into question the integrity of those rules.”
“Mr. Pryor – not Ohio State or the NCAA – made the judgment that he was ineligible for college play, and then took a series of affirmative steps that were intended to, and had the effect of, accomplishing that result. Moreover, Mr. Pryor did so in order to avoid the consequences of his conduct while in college – conduct to which he had admitted and for which he had accepted a suspension – and to hasten the day when he could pursue a potentially lucrative professional career in the NFL.”
“This smacks of a calculated effort to manipulate our eligibility rules in a way that undermines the integrity of, and public confidence in, those rules. Mr. Pryor made an affirmative decision to remain in college and play for Ohio State in 2011. He later reconsidered and decided that he wanted to enter the NFL. In order to do so, he needed to forfeit his remaining college eligibility and took steps to ensure that would happen. Based on the specific facts presented here, I conclude that Mr. Pryor’s actions warranted imposition of conditions on his entry into the NFL, namely, that he serve the same five-game suspension that he had previously agreed to while at Ohio State.”
“In my judgment, allowing players to secure their own ineligibility for college play in order to avoid previously determined disciplinary consequences for admitted conduct reflects poorly not on college football – which acted to discipline the transgressor – but on the NFL, by making it into a sanctuary where a player cannot only avoid the consequences of his conduct, but be paid for doing so.”

Since when did a fired coach (Gruden), still not employed in any NFL capacity 2-years later, become THE authority on how good a QB is or will be?
Pryor may or may not be good enough to play QB in this here League. Fortunately, it looks like we won’t need him to for at least a year or two.

I don’t trust Belicheat. I guess he has opened up to the media because NFL Network did a documentary about him and he probably was thrilled them not mentioning anything about him cheating in 2008. For all we know, Belicheat could still be cheating.
==================================================
You’re right, but keep in mind it’s only cheating if you get caught.
Belichick got caught in 2008, but I guarantee you he got away with a lot BEFORE that.
I can’t prove this, but I’m absolutely certain that Belichick’s greatest CHEAT occurred the week after the Tuck game, against the Steelers in the AFC championship game.
Go back and watch the tape of that game. Watch the Patriot defense. Somehow, they knew whether it was a pass or run, EVERY play.
Now I know Belichick is a master at identifying player habits or keys that can tip a play, but something else was going on that day.
Doubt he’s going to be able to flat out CHEAT the Raids, but you can bet he’s scrutinized our tape looking for any possible tips or keys in order to give his D an edge. Raider self review will be especially important this week.
September 30th, 2011 at 2:11 pm
Ahhh, yes…the old Ron Wolf is a winner, and Al knows nothing bit.
Is this the same Ron Wolf who helmed Tampa Bay to the NFL-record 26 straight losses? As in 0-26??
Why, yes it is! Certain trolls like to leave info like that out…not that it’s important or anything.
Seems to me that Ron Wolf was brought to the Raiders, and Al Davis helped the man learn how to be a winner. Ron Wolf owes his career to Al Davis…and Ron Wolf says as much.
September 30th, 2011 at 2:11 pm
Well, now with Jackson calling the offense, Belichick might need to cheat. He didn’t need to when Al puppets were running the offense. Cover 2 has traditionally been the Raider killer defense. Al just refuses to exploit it by running the ball or throwing slants. He insists on going to those sidelines.
September 30th, 2011 at 2:12 pm
Ron Wolf won a Super Bowl without a shred of help from Al Davis. Al Davis NEVER won a Super Bowl without Ron Wolf. That’s all you need to know, Hayes. It sucks, but it’s the truth.
September 30th, 2011 at 2:13 pm
In fact, Al Davis never saw consistent success without either Ron Wolf or Jon Gruden. Note that, too.
September 30th, 2011 at 2:14 pm
Gannon was a good Raider…played QB with the best in the League for a few years there. I guess having a couple of Hall Of Fame WR’s to throw to had nothing to do with his success…

Ron Wolf won Super Bowls in 3 decades.
Al Davis: 2. And, really, late ’70s-early ’80s, kind of the same era. Once the WCO and the zone defense ruled the day, Davis face planted. Wolf, on the other hand, survived.

Every Weds, AD would come out and tell me to leave. It became a running joke. I went to a MNF game in New Orleans with the booster organization and snuck into the closed Sunday practice in the Superdome.. We evaded security and managed to get on the field and I went up to Mr. Davis and asked to take a picture with him. He graciously did and the next week I took the photo to their office. Leaving the picture with the front office with my new address in Mpls, Mn, I unexpectedly received 9 months later via Fed Ex, the picture signed by Al Davis. It sits proudly with my other collectables.

If the Raiders run the ball less than 30 times:

September 30th, 2011 at 2:38 pm
HA ha!
Now you’re back on the Ron Wolf quotes.
First you pull the Tampa thing out of your ass, which is stupid, because they were an expansion team and back in those days expansion teams didn’t get crap. They were on their own.
Then you say that he wasn’t officially with the Raiders at the time they won the Super Bowl. Interesting you didn’t say that first. It’s because you’re looking this crap up as you go along, and you know it. And, yes, Wolf wasn’t there every year in the ’70s, but he drafted most of that team. He drafted Upshaw, said so in an SI interview about the salary cap years back. Marcus Allen said Wolf drafted him, in his book. You don’t believe Marcus? Well, you’re quoting other people so I’ll quote him. Don’t pick and choose.
Now, as I stated above, you’re going with quotes. As if any quotes change the fact that Al Davis never won a Super Bowl without Ron Wolf’s help, and that Wolf has won a Super Bowl without Al Davis’s help.
You’re just spinning the wheel of weak come backs.
Al Davis never won without Wolf or Gruden!!!! Face it numbnutz!!
September 30th, 2011 at 2:40 pm
Great tale, ExLA! I have a few of Al Davis meself…and a few with some Raiders fans from Hollywood, like the great Raiders fan Jim Garner.
You should see the reaction my son got from people, just because he got to meet Al. People looked at my kid like he was Gandhi or something, just because he met the great football mind, AL Davis. Funny stuff…and awesome to think how respected Al Davis is by those who really know the truth.
September 30th, 2011 at 2:40 pm
“To be perfectly honest, what Al Davis did was design that team, in his mold. Those of us who were there can take some credit, but really and truly, with the exception of Lamonica (John Rauch pulled the trigger on that one) those were all his trades. From Willie Brown to Ted Hendricks . . . I look back at the moves he made, and they were remarkable moves.”
- Ron Wolf
Like I said, tired. Not that this will change your mind. Why would you believe Ron Wolf about Ron Wolf?
September 30th, 2011 at 2:41 pm
I like Boss, but man I can’t help think how good we would be with Z. Miller back, and Gallery at LG, Wiz at C.
=================================================
Don’t see it that way at all.
Certainly don’t miss the turnstile Gallery, and he’s already injured.
Z. Miller was a fine player, but I like what Boss brings to the table better.
Think Satele is doing a fine job at C, and Wiz is probably better suited to play LG at this stage of his career.
Nope, I honestly believe dumping Gallery and Miller, and replacing them with Wiz and Boss, while retaining Satele at C has been a huge step forward.
September 30th, 2011 at 2:41 pm
lol. The whole world picked the Jets last week. Why shouldn’t they have? It takes time to earn respect in this league, and Hue’s starting to earn it. But you can’t blame anyone for picking the Jets last week. The Raider pick was a long shot, not the Jets pick. So give it a rest.
September 30th, 2011 at 2:43 pm
Davy Jones,
Nothing will change this, either.
Ron Wolf has won A Super Bowl without Al Davis’s help.
Al Davis has NEVER won a Super Bowl without Ron Wolf’s help.
That is indisputable. Ron Wolf can give the kindest lip service about how jolly of a time he had working with Al. Doesn’t change these simple facts.

There has been so many coaches, GMs and players that have never won a super bowl, and that doesn’t make them any better or worse than the rest who have. There are so many things that can happen in any given season. The patsies went 18-0 and still lost in the super bowl, genius and hero included. BTW, in the NFL and overall sports, you’re a hero one day bum the next, so is in the mindset of the fanatic.
Even Billichuckup calls Mr. Davis “coach,” those who know must know something neither one of us would know, at least I speak for myself. I’d be a fool if I said that by having watched the Raiders and football for decades, now I know better than a man who has build not just a legend, but an entire nation, which I’m sure like me many of you are proud troopers; just as well a lot of haters. Enjoy your side of the table.

Godzilla. Pfffft. You read the “simple fact” that Al Davis hasn’t won a super bowl w/out Ron Wolf as evidence that Ron Wolf DESERVES THE CREDIT for the Super Bowls Al Davis won.
That isn’t a simple fact, it’s a giant leap. It is well documented that Al Davis deserves all the credit he gets for building the team. You’ve got an incredibly loose statisti that you think trumps recorded testimony from observers and participants in the team.
Ron Wolf says that all the trades were Als. If you don’t believe Ron Wolf, who will you believe? Jesus Christ?

Zopi — Here’s one where Goodell has it right.
Goodell must protect the structure of the supplemental draft, or it will be attacked from all angles in future. The League allowed Pryor into the supplemental, with the already agreed-to stipulation that Pryor accept the terms he agreed to while still in college.
Pryor played with the rules in college, and worked them into his favor. He played with the rules in the NFL, and still played them into his favor…just not the way he hoped to.
Pryor needed to eat a little humble pie…and he, and the Raiders, will be much better off for it. The Raiders didn’t immediately need his talents — no matter the position.
Pryor needs work, at any spot, and he needs to grow up…like all young people do. This is one time where he needs to learn from his mistakes, and grow up just a little bit more each day.

HayesDaze37, Art Shell and the players would park in the players lot next to the Coliseam and walk to the players entrance. They signed autographs and took pictures with the fans. I think the Raiders match up pretty well against this patriots. Brady has problems with a strong pass-rush up the middle. Richard Seymore is going to look to have a big game in front of a sellout crowd against his former team. I would also like to see some corner blitzes from time to time to spark his memory.
The only thing I’m worried about tho is that I hope we didn’t shot our wad on the jets game. Judging from the injury list it looks light alot of people put it all out there on field last Sunday. I hope we have some mojo left for the brady bunch.
That being said: Raiders 24, Fag-riots 0

And everybody saying that HueJax needs to quit with the “trick” plays until the Raiders have a lead…they’d be wrong.
The beauty of HueJax’s trickeration is that it can happen at any time…and even if it doesn’t work, it takes a little steam out of the Defense. They simply don’t know where to look, because the ball might be going somewhere else entirely. That extra fraction of a second spent thinking about it is often the only extra time needed.
HueJax’s offensive play calls are a thing of beauty. If he were to be graded on them so far this season, I’d say he gets a solid 90%+ this year. They don’t always work…but they don’t always have to, as long as they don’t hurt us.

September 30th, 2011 at 3:22 pm
Think someone mentioned in an earlier thread that SRoutt leads all DBs in getting flagged and is on pace to obliterate the record for penalties by a corner in a single season.
I’m sure many of the penalties were legit calls, but one in the Jet game ticked me off.
Talking about the play SR got called for illegal hands to the face on Plaxico. At least I believe that was the call.
Maybe the film guru JHILL can confirm this, but I’m pretty sure Stan never touched Plax’s facemask or helmet on that play.
Appeared to me to be one of the best and most devastating two handed ‘chucks’ to the shoulder pads I’ve ever seen. Almost knocked Plax on his azz, and the ref overreacted.
True old style Raider ‘bump’. Loved that play by Routt and I hope the flag doesn’t deter him from that type of aggression down the road.

S&B — Actually, Pryor didn’t need to be involved at all…the Union can file that grievance on his behalf, even if he doesn’t want them to. But, he did, and they did. If the Union didn’t do it, they would’ve been remiss.
It’s all good though…Pryor’s head is probably on a lot straighter now, than if he was thrown into camp full-speed ahead. Hopefully, he’s done a lot of book-learnin’ in the month off!

I remember reading an article in Playboy many years ago about Mr. Davis. This wasn’t the typical negative, slanderous profile we’ve become accustomed to.
One of the things that impressed me in the article was the story about how Al was constantly at his wife’s hospital bedside after she suffered a stroke. Kept talking to Carol and calling her name for hours and hours on end even though she was comatose.
How one deals with adversity is a true measure of character. No, Al isn’t perfect, we all have our flaws.
But I don’t think John Madden was lying when he said something to the effect that if he ever got in serious trouble and needed help, the first person he’d call would be Al Davis.
Nothing would be sweeter than to see Mr. Davis get his 4th Lombardi trophy.

I think Boss will be a huge factor in this game, they have Gordon playing FB and i think Thec07 was the first to put that in print. I immediately agreed and I really think that kid is going to lay d’wood to somebody. I think while it may not be as innovative because it’s not a 1st but #82 is a physical guy it could garner some attention and have him in a heavy package with Bush late in games and not just short yardage.
The good thing about it is he has been in on short yardage and it’s not totally new. However I love Reece as the fulltime FB the guy just brings bigtime playmaking ability.
September 30th, 2011 at 4:10 pm
Pryor appealled at the behest of Mr D. it was not his decision. He said several times the only way he would appeal is if Mr Davis wanted him to.
September 30th, 2011 at 4:11 pm
At first, I thought the schedule maker didn’t do the Raids any favor with the opening segment of the schedule.
Two road games to start the season. The second being on a short week and on the East coast. Tough sledding.
Then follow that up with two supposed powerhouses, back to back.
Now I’m kind of liking the set up. The Jets have been knocked down, the team has got to be thinking they’re on the verge of something big, and there’s little chance of a let down or complacency setting in with the big bad Patsies rolling in.
Hell, I don’t even want to think about losing, but even if we drop the next two games – we’re still going to be in the thick of things.
We’re playing with house money. Continue the roll and keep improving. Feels good to be relevant again, doesn’t it ?

Hard to say anyone would before the game starts, but football is a team game and our secondary will only be as good as the help they get from the front seven.
If we don’t do something stupid and play five yards off the ball, the D-line can get pressure and force Brady to throw the ball where and when he doesn’t want to.
Difficult, but not impossible.
September 30th, 2011 at 4:25 pm
Fingers & Priest you are absolutely correct, Mr. Boss will be huge factor in the game, his blocking has already surpassed my expectations and Mr. Z. Miller’s entire career, (Zach was a solid reciever no doubt, but blocking was average at best).
Raiders OLine was outstanding, not just on Mr. Satele’s block on Mr. Moore’s TD run, but on Mr. McFadden’s 70 yard TD run, Mr. Boss and Mr. Vehldeer sealed their edge, Mr. Wisniewski blocked one DL quickly then went 2nd level and blocked another man, then it was all Darren’s speed, with some WR downfield blocking as well.

I foresee the Raiders putting Mr. Routt man-man coverage on Welker and playing zone with the rest;
hopefully 34mm is ready, Raiders DL will still be stout, even though I think Mr. Shaughnessy is our best DLineman.
Mr. Houston will have to step his game up this week.

ET words of wisdom as usual…
Whatup Retribution!
I don’t think it’s possible for me to put in words how bad I want to not just win but punish Brady. I think and I know this isn’t a cancer cure but we have to hit that guy early and often. If we are to win that’s how we do it by putting Brady in fear for his health. I’ve seen how he reacts when he’s punished and it definitely affects his accuracy.
September 30th, 2011 at 4:30 pm
Mr. Chekwa could solidify himself as the #1 CB this game; I’m trying to tell ya, his style, technique, and skills relate well to the pro game, especially with the Raiders style of play.
Yes I am not only saying Mr. Chekwa will not give up his starting role for the rest of the season; rather for his entire career!

September 30th, 2011 at 4:34 pm
Hopefully the Raiders can get to him with only 3-5 rushers each play; Mr. Wimbley & Mr. Houston need to have multiple sacks on Sunday, and I ould not mind a few extra knock downs, just not on 2nd or 3rd and 11+ yards to go.
Be aggressive & Intelligent!

September 30th, 2011 at 4:40 pm
I’ve agreed with Mr. Gannon’s analysis over the last few yars, but I do think he has a hard time accepting the Raiders can win without him.
Mr. Pryor is a winning QB for the Raiders and one of the top QB’s in the NFL passer rating.
I think alot of pundits are not sold on him yet.
YET he has produced a long drive for either a TD, a FG and/or to run out the clock to seal a vicory [or come from behind] in every game in the last minutes of the 4th quarter this season.

They may have give Scott and Wimbley more snaps at DE than normal to make up for Shonasty which I hate the idea of not having him. He is so dominant vs the run and holds the edeg better than any RDE we’ve had in many years. Moss has to really step up his game and so far so good.

I’d stack our DL against any other in the NFL. Great depth and versatility in this unit. Might be a need for a run stopping beast DT, but besides that, one of the best groups in the NFL.
OL is coming on like gangbusters. Way better than anyone could have expected. Might need a little more beef for short yardage and goal line situations.
And while the FOUNDATION for victory is always set in the trenches – it’s the arsenal of weapons this team possesses on offense that’s truly terrifying.
DMAC, Bush, Taiwan, Ford, Reese, Moore, Boss, Hagan, Chaz, DHB.

I honestly believe dumping Gallery and Miller, and replacing them with Wiz and Boss, while retaining Satele at C has been a huge step forward.
@@@@@@@@@@@@@
I wanted Boss before Miller was even signed by seattle. I can’t believe the giants let him walk. Did they replace him in the draft or have a good backup?
Wiz, how could you not want this guy to be drafted position of need and well… Would be nice to bring in Chris Long in a couple years when his contract expires!

My worry for Sunday is the match ups of our slow LBs with the patsie’s backs and TEs , if we go zone brady will eat us up without pressure. Why in the world did they let one of the fastest LBs in the league go in Thomas Howard, he’s starting for the bengals!

He was a liability in run defense much like his mate Morrison.
Branch has the wheels to cover any back or TE. Will he make a plays though?

He’s watched his old team in Oakland look worse without him, especially on the offensive line. He’s watched his new team in Seattle rank near the top in nearly every noteworthy offensive stat.

He’s ready to start now and has the size to play the Raider style of man corner.

Part of our defensive strategy is playing to one of our major strengths – Physical strength. We need to really lay some serious pain on key opponents early. Knocking Welker out of the game will help immensely. Nail him coming off the line on every play. Don’t let him go 5 yards without dispensing a total physical beating. If he can’t play, he can’t hurt us. Primary target is welker. Next is the primary receiving TE. we won’t be able to get to Brady before he releases so he’s pretty much protected by the refs. If Brady has no one to throw to we are half way there.
Plan of the day: Be physical and hurt people enough to remove them from the game. Be smart. Play like the “NEW RAIDERS”. Force 3 and outs, pick 6, create havoc in the opponents backfield, create turnovers, search & destroy, these are all parts of our Defensive game plan. Make it happen. Just WIN baby!
September 30th, 2011 at 10:12 pm
Between post 301 and 302 there was an hour and seven minutes without a posting. That’s Friday night for you.
It seems like many of us our out for Friday night dinner with their families or friends.
This game is so huge and it will mark where we stand against other teams in the league because you can’t get a better guage than the Beli-cheaters. If we win, there is no limit. If we play competitive throughout the game and it goes down to the wire, then it will show us we can play with anyone. Ya, like most of you I can’t wait. I just wish we didn’t have so many injuries.
Next man up. Go Raiders: Raiders 34 – NE 27
September 30th, 2011 at 10:20 pm
JB post 316:
I hope they’re listening to you because that’s the way to do it. Ya, we’re obviously not coaches, but it only makes sense that we have to bully them at the line and take our chances. The negative side to it is that you must land that “chuck” … you can’t miss or he has instant separation from you and that can turn a small “dink” into a long gain. But where there is no rish, there is usually no gain. Take the freaking risk. Bang Welker, bang him hard and continually. Make it a non-ending dog fight, a junk yard dog fight.
I feel that Seymour will have a big game and that he’s going to elevate everyone on that defensive squad to do the same. Starting with Kelly.
September 30th, 2011 at 10:23 pm
This game is one of those defining moments. The importance of this game can not be overstated. This is a turning point for this team. Most of the talking heads pick the Pats primarily because of Tom Brady & Bill Belichick – the past history of winning and 4 SB rings. In the other corner we have the New Raiders. Some have already seen the sparkle of something good – a new & competitive group of athletes playing together. Winning this game will be BIG for the Raiders & the NFL. Back to back victories over elite teams by the Raiders will force the rest of the world to re-evaluate prior impressions of the Raiders and start taking them seriously. Tom Brady, by himself, can’t win this game. This is a team sport and requires a team effort. If we disassemble the other team we will be able to be victorious. NOW is he time for Hue Jackson’s New Raiders to stand up and be counted. It’s time to shine. Shining means winning as second place just doesn’t cut it.
GO RAIDERS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

AD only parts with cash for player’s salaries. No way he pays cash to any other team for any player. As far as the basic trade itself, it has merit. I really like Bush but I think he’s a short term Raider. TJones is the heir apparent. Besides, RB’s simply don’t last that long so his longevity so far is due to the broken leg and his role as secondary to DMac. Don’t think it would take Bush & a 1st but then again…
It would definitely be nice to have Matthews but I don’t really see it happening. More likely, move RoMac to WLB, draft a new #1 real Mike MLB.
