Raiders release WR/KR Miller, sign DB Parker
By Steve Corkran
Saturday, October 1st, 2011 at 2:24 pm in Oakland Raiders.
The Raiders on Saturday released wide receiver/kick returner Nick Miller and signed defensive back Ron Parker from their practice squad to take Miller’s spot on the 53-man roster.
Miller was with the Raiders the past two seasons and the first three games of this season. He became expendable with the emergence of rookies Denarius Moore and Taiwan Jones as viable options on punt and kick returns, respectively.
Parker was signed Monday. He spent time in training camp with the Seattle Seahawks before being released. He is out of Newberry College, where he played both safety spots.
The signing of Parker to the 53-man roster gives the Raiders another option at defensive back, with free safety Michael Huff fresh from a concussion and cornerback Chris Johnson out with a hamstring injury.
It’s uncertain whether Parker will be activated for Sunday’s game against the New England Patriots.
In other news, it’s likely that the Raiders will re-sign undrafted rookie cornerback Sterling Moore to their practice squad now that they have an open spot — teams are permitted to carry as many as eight players.
Moore was released when the Raiders signed Parker.

Oh well. Miller went from plucky to yucky like that. That’s on him. When opportunities are presented like that, you’ve got to take them by the throat and make the most of them.

Hey, I am coming into town for either the Bears Game or the Chefs Game….getting tickets through Al Saunders himself..my buddies sister is dating his daughter (yeah you read that right)prolly gonna get some field passes and a couple beers while I am at it..
My question:
What is the best airport to fly into around there. I am looking at different flights and I haven’t been to Oaktown since I was 12, so I don’t really know what would be the easiest AirPort do deal with. Im thinking of having my layover in Dallas instead of LAX..but should I fly into San Fran or Oaktown?
Any advice would be great..See you homies at the HOT..!

I watched the replay of the snow-job on NFL and got pist off all over again. We have GOT to make up for that, but it’s a tall order.
This team is definitely up-and-coming, but I’m not ready to drink the kool-aid just yet. Our secondary is not top tier even when they’re all healthy. They’re IMPROVING every week, for sure, but they’re not there yet. If pretty boy doesn’t start getting smacked around right off the bat we are in for a long day. I hope coach Woodson out-did himself this week and has those kids ready to GO.
October 1st, 2011 at 3:18 pm
Watching the Baylor Kansas State tilt, concentrating on the Baylor QB, Robert Griffin III.
This guy’s unbelivable.. The video game stat that hits you right between the eyes is he has more TD throws (17 @ press time) to 16 INCOMPLETIONS FOR THE SEASON.
He’s parallel to Mike Vick athletic wise, only right handed & bigger. He would be PERFECT running Hue’s offense.
Breaking down his passing metric, he is 8 for 11 THROWING TO THE LEFT FLAT, 10-13 to the left overall.
I’ll take this guy HANDS DOWN over any other Division I QB. Andrew Luck, good luck. Landry Jones, have fun. Matt Barkley, buh bye! Or anuone else I don’t EVEN KNOW ABOUT!
This guy is a world class trak athlete with a gun! And he’s running the Baylor offense flawlessly!
Check him out!He is a junior, listed @ 6″ 2′, 220 lbs. I think he’s a little closer to 6″ even, but his game is much bigger! He’s the real deal! Just remember when you first saw Vick @ Va Tech!

Raiders are going to bring big time on defense, believe me Biekert and wiesnewski have something today about that atrocious “tuck rule” call that was complete garbage. Seymour is simmering, remember he was pissed when he got traded to the Raiders didn’t want to come, and didn’t appreciate the way it went down. I am feeling the raiders do what the ravens did a couple of years ago in the playoffs, blitz big time and shake Mr. Brady to the core. Mark that down.

Yah damn right! I’m just absolutely pissed off that I have to find a way to return or sell my Nick Miller jersey.
The key to winning this game will be T.O.P. If we can run the ball effectively and convert more 3rd downs then we did against the Jets=0, we’ll be fine.
On defense, plenty of pressure and bump and run by our corners, mix in some zone…I’ll be happy with that!
Jacoby needs to take one back as well.
If the combined score doesnt get out of hand, we take it!

I don’t get why we didn’t just keep Sterling Moore on the practice squad and then bring him up.
He already was practicing with us, knew the schemes etc. Instead we get rid of him for some guy that’s 4.3 timed who was just kicked off someone else’s practice squad and isn’t familiar with us yet and just call him up.
Sterling at least was making plays when he was in, and showing a nose for the ball.

Imo, the key to winning all our games is when we’re on D, stopping teams 3rd and long attempts. We gifted the Jets so many of them (especially by penalty). It’s been our Achilles heel.
October 1st, 2011 at 5:35 pm
The key to winning the game will be finishing the game with more points than the patriots have.

No, the key will be finishing the game with less conceded points than our opponents.

=====================================================
We don’t know how Sterling was doing in practice. He could have been terrible or not grasping concepts. I don’t think he has been signed to anyone elses squad or roster.
As for the new kid they got. The Raiders have a philosophy that is driven on having the fastest players on the field. Sometime it works and sometimes it doesn’t.
Let’s see what happens on the field
October 1st, 2011 at 5:43 pm
SNB – cool, fair enough. It just looked like out of our younger guys the “Moores” (no relation) were both looking comfortable out there without taking much “learning time”. But you’re right. Hope this new guy steps up and works out.

Ill admit I was high on N Miller, but I can see why he was cut. He just doesn’t pass the eye test anymore and his kick return decision making was suspect since last year.

October 1st, 2011 at 6:05 pm
We still have two more games before a decision has to be made about how to make room for Pryor on the roster. By that time the decision could take care of itself.
October 1st, 2011 at 6:17 pm
No way they’d cut DVD or any of this year’s draft picks rounds 1 – 5.
October 1st, 2011 at 6:20 pm
I don’t feel bad for him, he was on the roster to start the year, so his paychecks are guaranteed for the year.

They could put Parker back on the practice squad, Im sure thats the plan anyway once Huff and or CJ get healthy.

31st ranked defense by Patriots…it is time to exploit that weakness…but Brady is so dangerous…
October 1st, 2011 at 6:49 pm
40. Thnx 4 the heads up Anti.
Sounds worth checkin out but remember, we’ve got Pryor. Worst case, he or Luck will go to f’in Denver.
October 1st, 2011 at 6:49 pm
Let’s hope we can establish the run and Run DMC stAys healthy….. Brady is gonna get his… But if McFadden gets his we win this one with sound running and good clock management…. Converting on at least half the third downs will keep Brady off the field… And that’s how u beat this team… He is just like Payton manning where as his team will never win if he is off the field…. I love this raiders team the spunk that Hue has brought to this locker room is showing up on the field and back to back wins against quality playoff teams would sound the alarm to the rest of the league that we are tired of getting are lunch money took and it’s time to fight back ! I still like Sterling but you never know. They may have had otehr reasons for letting him go.
He stated he never eats vegetables and only eats crap food.
Mario was a lineman who ate himself out of a job, who knows?
I remember Ocho used to eat fast food all the time.
WHo knows. I like Sterling and hope he comes back and makes the plays he’s capable of

109. I’d like to see our ground game churn up 250+ and 3 TDs.
3 more thru the air as we poor it on…in my mind.
October 1st, 2011 at 7:04 pm
Better be ready for no huddle and 4-5 wide outs. Pats will try and run the score early to get the Raiders out of the run game.
October 1st, 2011 at 7:04 pm
I see a lot of people asking and perplexed about the Sterling Moore release and the signing of the safety Parker. Well let me add my 2 cents…..no one seems to remember we lost one of our best ST’s players and our best gunner in Hiram Eugene. They have been searching for someone to fill that void and no one has as of yet. They even put TJ in as a gunner last game and the last Kick coverage was bad and almost helped the Jets get back into the game. They were only stopped at our 1 yardline due to a great KR.
I’ve noticed that not having Hiram has hurt us on punt and kick returns. My bet is this kid excels at that just a guess but I would bet that is his specialty he runs a 4.28 or something and he’s a safety. With Huff and MM34 hurting Gio and Boyd have been underwhelming. So it stands to reason from a couple of points of view taht they sign some kid to strengthen that area until we’re full strength there. Then let things shake out as tehy may. I’ve never seen this kid play and wouldn’t know him from an Alien but I’ll bet he hits hard and is great on teams.
Remember MM34 and Eugene as well as Branch were all great on teams and we have been missing a great gunner. Look for Parker as a gunner I’ll bet dollars to donuts that is where you’ll find him.
As for Sterling Moore I would be surprised if he isn’t already back on the PS.
October 1st, 2011 at 7:07 pm
the cut will likely come from putting murphy on IR or cutting parker or possibly giordano if parker plays well. he’s a speedster so he might have upside. 11 db’s is a bit much. with miller gone, we’re down to 6 wr, and only te (4) has more than normal. i would say when cj and huff are healthy, it has to be gio or parker b/c 6 safeties is too much.
October 1st, 2011 at 7:07 pm
Great move bringing Parker up from PS…another contributor who flew under the radar
October 1st, 2011 at 7:09 pm
My guess is Gio or Boyd will go.
October 1st, 2011 at 7:09 pm
Fat Albert doesn’t want anything to do with our O Line. See ya Nick best of luck to ya. Dallas needs a WR I hear. Isn’t Sharper still out there? He would be a good pick up. NE is last in total defense. Turn it loose Raiders!
October 1st, 2011 at 7:11 pm
I don’t think Huff had played much safety at all this year I’ve seen him up on the LOS almost every game even Denver. Gio took his place and Boyd took MM34 as far as it looks to me.

It’s a great night to be a Raiders fan. Isn’t it?!
Good-bye, Nicky Miller. Do well elsewhere!
Chimdi must hold up well the first few times Brady challenges him. Make him look elsewhere by gaining a little respect.
Hopefully Shaughnessy and Huff are up to playing. MM34 scares me only because he hasn’t played @ game speed yet. Otherwise, I think he’d be great.
Time for the D-line to do some damage, beat ‘em up early and grind ‘em down all game.

I think it will really come down to the last drive in the 4th Qtr.

Don’t forget Ricky Brown, who spent some time with them as well, for whatever that is worth.

ArmChair Money aint everything and Nnamdi just has to suck it up and go. If he dwells on it too long it could make things much harder sometimes these players have to get involved in their own negotiations and nnamdi was smart enough to do that but he didn’t. And I would bet dollars to donuts Mr Davis would have been much more forthcoming had he done that. But as i said he didn’t.

I agree Priest. It’s still kind of sad to me though. With our new coaches especially Rod Woodson coaching the secondary, I believe Nnamdi would have had a lot of success here.
I know he’s gone, but he is still one of the best cover corners in the league.

Hate to say it but its been 8 years of ups and downs with this team. I’m not annointing them back or a play off team till it happens.
October 1st, 2011 at 9:14 pm
Just read the aforementioned Monte Poole article. Lol herm edwards is 100% correct about Nnamdi. it seems to me they could have gotten a dime a dozen zone corner to play that scheme. But no way not philly, lets go get the best man to man shutdown CB in the game and force him to play zone. And philly fans wonder why nobody takes their “dream team” seriously.
October 1st, 2011 at 9:19 pm
Also Nnamdi is a great leader if he doesn’t go into broadcasting I think he’d probably be a good coach. Maybe he can come coach our secondary when woodson becomes DC lol.
October 1st, 2011 at 9:21 pm
141. Is he?!
Getting exposed as a one dimesnional man cover guy. The best, but still, getting torched in zone and other stuff, he was supposed to be better than Revis.
October 1st, 2011 at 9:24 pm
That Nnamdi article is great. I was pretty bitter about that and hated to see him go. Such a class act. what’s even worse is that he wanted to stay.
October 1st, 2011 at 9:36 pm
It’s better we let Nnamdi go. Able to acquire more players. Nnamdi naturally chased the money and wanted to win, gave Al grief about Cable etc and demanding more money the previous contract if he was to stay.
Like i predicted on PFT in the off-season, if Nnamdi signed with a contender, that team would not win the Super Bowl but instead the Raiders would. Just like how Randy Moss left for New England chasing it and they lost.
October 1st, 2011 at 9:38 pm
He’s just new to the scheme and struggling learning teamates it takes a minute unless they put him back on his own island. Playing zone was never Nnamdi’s strength he is what he is until he proves and learns different. But if I’m Philly I put him in man and roll coverage. Get him confortable first then ease him into the new role. How can it hurt?

The “Giant” is starting to awaken! That’s what was said last week after our impressive win over the Jets.
I’m sure most of you, if not all, have seen the “first segment” of J.T. the Brick, Raiders Report, week 4. It’s an awesome segment with great highlights of our game against the Jets.
What I like the best was the comment in the Raiders locker room before the game – especially by Richard Seymour. Basically he said that some people are satisfied to be good, but that wasn’t good enough and it’s time to be great. His last statement was: “I’m going to give you everything I got! I need the same from you!” WOW. If that doesn’t send chills down your spine and motivate the hell out of you – nothing will.
Hue urging the players to realize that their time is now was awesome as well. He’s a great motivator. There
is no way to express what a victory tomorrow will mean to this team and to all the fans. Beyond words. If we win tomorrow, the dischargers will just be an after thought and they’re going to be pizzing bricks when they face us. But, that’s in the future and it’s all about tomorrow.
AWAKE SLEEPING GIANT AND KICK SOME BZTT…!!!
GO RAIDERS!

yeah we have moved away from the cable guys zbs I thought? But what he said was Barnes and Veldheer have a problem with their Kick slide in pass protection. They leave gaps to the inside. If this were true would opponents have so few sacks? I thought our O line has done an awesome job so far especially as young as it is on the left side. But I guess that’s why I’m just a spectator and not an expert

===========================================
The Raiders were not thinking of this year when they let Nnamdi go. It was about next year. THey have to re-sign DMAC, hopefully Bush, Shaughnessy and are probably going to have do something for Denarious Moore as well.
In addition, Al Davis has wisely focused the resources away from the secondary and to building the front 7. Hence the contract to Seymour over Asomugha.
Now the Raiders are winning and that’s all that matters.
Nnamdi and Zach Miller will disappear into irrelevency

Haha Hell yeah
October 1st, 2011 at 11:09 pm
What worries me more than anything is when teams get in bunch formation against us. We just don’t react very well to it. We often leave a rec’r uncovered. Some whow Bresh has to get that solved because we’ve been burned repeatedly by that formation. And when we go bunch or stack rec’s the one who gets the ball is not aggressive.
That’s why the article said that we struggle because the run a drag and we’re in a trail position. It sucks we have to get better at it. We have sort it out and play it aggressive because 9x’s out of 10 the player that runs a cross is going to get the ball just like the last play vs the Bills he was wide open. partly due to unfamiliarity with each other but for years we’ve sucked against bunch formation.
Get it fixed already!!!
October 1st, 2011 at 11:13 pm
SnB I find it hard to believe Nnamdi fades into irrelevancy he’s just struggling with a new system and teammates. But to your point about us going away from the secondary nothing could be further from the truthwe focused on teh secondary in the draft and got teo greta players and we will always focus on the secondary because that is how you win son. If you cannot cover you are DEAD!. This is a passsing league more than any time before and DB’s are at a premium………….period

-Hes comin off a loss and a poor performance
-Hes comin home to the bay area
-Brady and Belichick have to come to the BLACK HOLE
-They know they are going up against a much better Raiders team that is just hungry enough to eat his lunch.
-Knowing he has a bottom of the barrell D, the pressure to score every possession may get to him a bit.
-Can he handle what Hue and Chuck throw at him? Well, we’ll see, but I says no fckng way. Bring on the Pain.

The attitude on this team would soar it’ll make it hard for any team to beat us because they will know for sure they are legit. No one has beaten Tom Brady after a loss in 5 YEARS. Good read, and link.
It’s pretty obvious this is still a majority ZBS run blocking team. Only people who don’t want to admit think that by saying we still run a ZBS system, think we are giving credit to Cable.
It’s not that way. Hue has gotten way better productions, out of pretty much the same players, using a hybrid system, and just calling plays and run designs that work better for the personnel.
The most telling moment of this whole “ZBS vs. Power-blocking debate” was in the preseason, when during a game Papa was interviewing Mike Bush.
Papa asked Bush basically what does he think of the team moving towards a more power-blocking scheme, and Bush just deadpanned, “uhh….no we are pretty much doing the same thing we have been doing for years”.

=================================
Interesting article, but the diagram of the slant/flat routes are completely absurdly wrong…Those ’slants’ he drew up were essentially ‘post routes’ and the ‘flat’ routes looked like lazy ‘out’ routes..A slant is essentially 1 step up field, then a sharp angle to the inside..take a look at the ’slants’ he drew up in the article those are drawn up to be 7-8 yards upfield, then cut to the post??? And as far as the flat route is concerned, It is difficult to describe in words, but those ain’t flats..a flat is essentially run parallel to the line of scrimmage and when you start to near the boundary, you turn up field…you see the backs run em all the time..
This guy may know a few x-o’s but so does my sister..

Here’s the snarky lil preview of today’s game in The Dayton Daily News. It’s a wire feed from some dude named Mike Tanier of The New York Times News Service:
Patriots at Raiders:
“Oakland linebacker Rolando McClain said during the week that New England was “just a finesse team.” Tom Brady and Co. can take solace in the fact that only successful teams are accused of being “finesse”, often by grumbling opponents who fail to notice that their own offenses consist largely of end-arounds and cutesy option plays.”
WTF? Mr. Tanier sounds like a spurned woman..or a butt hurt, closet Patriot fan.
However, Rolando did open up his yap, and provide the master manipulator Belicheat with some bulletin board material.
So, he better back his talk up, and be very physical. Be a bully. He’s going to get his chance to catch Wes Welker going accross the middle.
I don’t care if he goes all WWE, or just gives him the Sproles treatment. Just knock his azz out!

Damn. This is the most excited/nervous I’ve been for a football game in a long while. The Patsies….the team I love to hate the most.
We need Big Rich, TK, LHouston and Co. to step up in a big way. Do their best Justin Tuck, Strahan and G-men impersonation. They have to make Mr. GQ’s life miserable.
The Raiders and anybody else’s secondary will struggle with New England’s passing attack.
Raiders need to get physical with Brady AND his recievers.
As Hue likes to say… We’re going to play like the Raiders of Old. Play like a Raider today.
Raiders 38…Patsies 31.
Just Win, Baby!
============================================
Brady normally negates the pass rush by getting the rock out of his mits very very quickly. The way to negate that is to drop into zones, and break on the ball quickly. Then alternate that with man coverage to confuse him. Defenses must rush strong straight up the gut and in Brady’s face. Also if you can get Brady moving to his left, he doesn’t have the comfort and athleticism to make plays that way. See y’alls in the Stadium.

Nobody in the NFL has been able to figure out how to stop Brady in 11 years, I doubt any semi-pro’s have the secret either.
The way to beat Brady?? Score points, and get some hits on him.
Even by doing that, he is still going to get his.
It’s what HOFers do.

Do you think Brady lept out of bed this morning and put his pants on both legs at the same time before his feet even hit the floor? I think he puts his pants on one leg at a time like the rest of us, and he is just a capable of making mistakes and having a bad day as the rest of us. If he gets all day to throw he will be real good. If he is under constant presure he will not be as good. Same as Jason Campbell.

BLACK HOLE, Calif. — Brian Waters knows what awaits the Patriots [team stats] today in the Black Hole that is the O.co Coliseum. They’re in for a fistfight more than a football game.
The day first-year Raiders coach Hue Jackson took over in Oakland he made his mission clear. He didn’t talk about the Lombardi Trophy or a commitment to excellence or even a return to the once proud history of the Silver ’n’ Black. What he talked about was something more darkly elemental. Some might call it criminal.
“We’re going to build a bully here,” Jackson promised. “This is the Raiders. We believe in violent, physical, tough, aggressive football teams. I’m going to build that.”
There are many ways to view such a statement and Waters has seen all of them after facing the Raiders twice a year for 11 seasons while with the Kansas City Chiefs. He knows what they are about but more importantly what they are often up to, which is often far more than the rulebook allows.
“You’ve got to expect a lot of pushing and shoving after the whistle and things like that, but you can’t get focused on it,” Waters said. “You got to remain aggressive. You can’t just take it but you can’t focus on it either. (If) you focus on getting one of their guys back, then you’re not focused on the next play. If they can get you off your concentration then that works to their advantage.
“I try not to get caught up in that. It puts you in and up-and-down cycle. The important thing is to stay with your plan. They’re a physical football team. They take pride in that. You have to take that into consideration, but if you get caught up in the fussing, the crowd and all the pushing and shoving, it ends up hurting you more than them.”
Waters has a better idea of what that truly means than the majority of his teammates because few of them have experienced the kind of things he’s seen in Oakland annually for more than a decade. That’s not only crazed men in black, but also crazy women in black.
“l’ll say this, it’s the first time I ever saw an old lady in a wheelchair shooting you the bird with both fingers,” Waters said of what the Black Hole brings to the party. “That’s as crazy as it gets.”
This process of trying to turn a football game into a food fight began early last week when Raiders linebacker Rolando McClain called the Patriots a “finesse” team. He did not say it with admiration. He said it with disdain and a marked lack of respect Waters expects will in some way or another spill onto the O.co Coliseum floor today, fueled by Jackson’s promise and their fans’ insanity.
It is why the Raiders are the most flagged team in the NFL (30 penalties in three games) and among the most feared, even when their record hasn’t justified it. Raiders owner Al Davis has said many times, “I’d rather be feared than respected.” It is a philosophy that is all about intimidation and often all about how you deal with the Raiders.
But there is a different edge to things these days in Oakland. It’s an edge they had in the 1970s and ’80s, when they not only knocked your block off, but also knocked you off on the way to three Super Bowl championships. Now they not only intimidate, they again just win, baby.
“They’re one of the most talented football teams in the league,” Waters said. “Their won-loss record lately hasn’t been what you’d expect, but if you looked close you saw the talent. The last year or so you didn’t have to look as close to see it.”
What Waters meant is where not so many years ago the Raiders were more about aggression than production, they are now a team capable of both. They have the talent to beat anyone — as the Jets found out last Sunday when Rex Ryan’s “Ground ’n’ Pound” team got pounded for 234 yards on the ground in a 34-24 loss — and are one bad half from being 3-0.
Last week, Jackson showed his team an old video of Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez eating a hot dog on the sidelines at the O in the midst of a 38-0 smoking of the Raiders two years earlier. By the end of Sunday’s game he’d been sacked four times, hit six more times and left with a broken nose and little appetite for hot dogs. He’d been intimidated.
The Raiders were more physical than one of the most physical teams on the Patriots schedule. They were — and are — the bullies Jackson promised.
“There’s always something going on,” tackle Matt Light [stats] said of facing the Raiders. “You have to know they play to the whistle.”
The veteran tackle smiled then, knowing all too well that in the Black Hole the sound of the whistle sounds a little fainter than in more civilized environments.
“This is what you play the game for,” Light said. “You get to prove something. It’ll be a little different than what we’ve seen the first three weeks. This will be a dogfight.”

More from the Herald
OAKLAND, Calif. — The Patriots [team stats] have not faced the Raiders since 2008, and many of the players on both teams have changed. Unlike the first three weeks of the season, there is plenty of unfamiliarity here.
Still, the Patriots have watched plenty of film on the Raiders, and are familiar with the product they put out on the field. It’s the same one owner Al Davis has been championing for years.
“They’re very physical, they’re tough, they’re big, they’re fast,” quarterback Tom Brady [stats] said of the Raiders. “It’s always a certain kind of player out there: big, fast and tough.”
That’s the challenge for the Patriots today, as they attempt to rebound from last week’s loss to the formerly lowly Bills. Here are five things to watch going into today’s game:
1). Can the Patriots stop Raiders running back Darren McFadden?
The NFL’s leading rusher is a physical, punishing running back who can break it for 70 yards, as he did last week against the Jets. Halting McFadden’s progress is a serious challenge for any defense, let alone one that is battling injuries up front. A balky back has Albert Haynesworth sidelined again so that means that Vince Wilfork [stats] and Gerard Warren must come to play. In addition, McFadden attacks the edges of a defense, meaning ends Andre Carter and Shaun Ellis must be attentive while they rush into the backfield to create pressure. But nothing will be as important as beating one-on-one blocks to get to the ballcarrier.
2.) Whether the DBs can limit big pass plays
Last week, the Pats defensive backs allowed eight pass plays of longer than 20 yards, including a back-breaking 38-yarder to Fred Jackson. Through three games, the Patriots have yielded 23 pass plays of more than 20 yards, on pace to allow far more than last year’s total of 55. That can’t continue. Facing quarterback Jason Campbell and deep-ball partner Denarius Moore, cornerbacks Kyle Arrington and Devin McCourty must stay fundamentally sound, as Oakland will try to beat them deep. It’s a mental test, as well as a physical one, made harder by the absence of Leigh Bodden and Ras-I Dowling.
3.) Can the Patriots run when they have to?
One of the most surprising aspects of the Patriots’ loss to the Bills last week was that BenJarvus Green-Ellis was largely ineffective, rushing for just 16 yards on nine carries. The Patriots went to Danny Woodhead for a spark, but he managed just 3.5 yards per carry. With a full reliance on the passing game, Brady uncharacteristically threw four interceptions, and the defense was eventually gassed. Today, the Patriots must establish the run earlier, even if it takes putting rookie Stevan Ridley on the field to do so.
4.) Can Brady eliminate his own mistakes?
Watching Brady struggle is such a rarity that one almost doesn’t know how to react when it happens. The team appears to let down as a whole when Brady tosses an interception, and by the time his fourth was returned for a score last week at Buffalo, the Patriots were demoralized. Don’t expect a repeat. Two of Brady’s passes were tipped, and two were underthrown. Figure there will be an emphasis on developing passing lanes today, though the best way to handle it is for Brady to simply be more accurate. If history provides a lesson, he will be. Expect a flawless and focused Brady.
5.) How the Pats handle Black Hole madness
During the practice week before an away game, the Pats will blare music at workouts. It helps players get used to functioning with intense noise and using hand signals. By now the Pats are proficient in that mode. Even newcomer Chad Ochocinco appears to be getting the on-the-fly nature of the offense. O.co Coliseum’s Black Hole is intense. While the Patriots have dealt with it all in the past, it’s another challenge. Against the Raiders’ attacking front four, the offense must be on the same page from opening kickoff. Otherwise, Brady may wind up as a rag doll.

More from the Herald:
OAKLAND, Calif. — During the week, Tom Brady [stats] wore a look on his face that appears every so often. It was serious, stern, all business.
It was his rebound look.
Losses do that to the Patriots [team stats] quarterback. He even cut his hair, perhaps with the thought of shedding any lasting image of his four-interception game last Sunday against the Buffalo Bills.
“It’s really a fresh week for us,” Brady said when asked about moving on from the 34-31 loss to the Bills and getting ready for the Oakland Raiders. “Like I said, there’s nothing that we can do about what’s happened. We are trying to bring a fresh new plan, new energy (and) we’re trying to put it together against a damn good football team. We’re going to learn more about our team going on the road and playing a tough opponent than anything more than that. We’re trying to go out there and get a win.”
Historically, the Bill Belichick-coached Patriots have done a good job moving past losses. They’ve been excellent rebounders. Today, as they square off with the Raiders at O.co Coliseum, they’ll try to stick to tradition and avoid a rare double dip. The last time the Pats lost back-to-back games in the regular season came in Weeks 12 and 13 of 2009 — road games at New Orleans and Miami. Before that, you have to dig back to 2006 to find defeats in successive games. In fact, since the beginning of the 2003 season, the Pats have gone 25-2 after a regular-season loss, quite a remarkable statistic.
If you’ve seen the NFL Films documentary, “Bill Belichick: A Football LIfe,” you see how Belichick agonizes on the sidelines during that 2009 loss to New Orleans, lamenting to Tom Brady that the team just didn’t have the mental makeup to consistently win or deal with adversity.
Will that be the fate of the 2011 team?
Let’s just say, after losing a game in which Brady was uncharacteristically mistake-prone — a problem compounded by players on both sides of the ball being undisciplined and penalty prone — the response today should be interesting.
Blowing a 21-0 lead at Buffalo with Brady at the helm was stunning. Now, after a cross-country trek to the West Coast, the Pats are looking for redemption in a game that marks just Brady’s second return as a pro to his Bay Area roots. The San Mateo, Calif., native dropped his first game at Oakland in 2002, completing 18-of-30 passes for 172 yards in a 27-20 loss.
Now, if anyone thinks the long-suffering Raiders are going to be pushovers, or an easy mark to rebound against, think again. This is a tough team that will line up and smack the Patriots in the mouth. They did it last week against the Jets. As former Patriots star Richard Seymour [stats] told colleague Ron Borges last week, Raiders football is “nasty, rip-your-head-off brutality.”
The crazed fans who reside in the Black Hole aren’t expecting the Silver and Black to ease up on the trench warfare with the Patriots in town. So a week after coming off as a little soft and undisciplined, we’ll see what the Pats are made of today. We’ll get our first gauge of their mental fortitude and how they handle their first taste of adversity this season. We’ll see how they improve their league-worst passing defense.
Brady said the Patriots didn’t prepare any differently or with any more urgency than any other week. But the players all knew the importance of regaining the winning formula. They don’t want momentum going in the wrong direction and a crisis alarm sounding with the dreaded Jets on tap in Foxboro the following week.
“I don’t think we are doing anything extra special this week,” Brady said at his mid-week press conference. “Like every week, we identify (issues) that were a problem (the previous week) and we see the things we did well and try to eliminate some of the problems and then understand what it takes to win these games. When you look at the different opponent that you’re facing, you have a different game plan, you go out there and try to attack them in a different way — and everyone’s really got up to speed in what we’re trying to do there. We are preparing pretty much like we always prepare.”
Since the Patriots lost just two games during the regular season last year, there aren’t many examples to gauge the bounce-back responses of the majority of the current group. After a Week 2 loss to the Jets in which Brady had two interceptions, the Pats rebounded with a 38-30 shootout win over the Bills the following week at home. Then, after being embarrassed in Cleveland, 34-14, in Week 9, they responded by stomping on the Steelers at Heinz Field, 39-26, in Week 10.
“Last year, after that Cleveland game, everyone was asking, ‘What are these guys going to do after that?’ ” linebacker Rob Ninkovich said. “Well, we were able to bounce back and have a better rest of the season.
“So I think last week was another eye-opener. You have to give credit to Buffalo, but this week is a new chapter. It reflects your character.”
And tests your rebounding skill.
October 2nd, 2011 at 9:59 am
Let’s go back to early September. The Patriots [team stats]’ season opener against Miami was a week away, and Tom Brady [stats] wasn’t a happy man.
Even with five weeks of training camp under his belt, the quarterback known for his precision and accuracy was firing off-target almost with regularity. And it was driving him nuts because he couldn’t find a solution to the problem.
Brady knew his mechanics had to be off. Why else was he bouncing so many balls in front of receivers? So he did the one thing he was sure would guarantee a solution. He summoned the one man he knew could make him right.
After all, Tom Martinez has been fine-tuning Brady’s throwing motion ever since the future Patriots quarterback was a kid starting out in the game. Of course, Brady could have called or had Martinez talk him through it from his West Coast home but this was worrisome enough for an in-person session over Labor Day Weekend.
Naturally, Martinez came. The man some people refer to as the Quarterback Whisperer was more than happy to help, given the close bond he shares with Brady. Plus, with some serious health issues clouding Martinez future, everything he does now carries added significance and meaning.
Anyone who has been following this teacher-pupil relationship knows that Martinez is battling complications from diabetes that initially left him believing he wouldn’t make it through the year. While Martinez maintains hope of having a life-saving kidney transplant, he’s still able to tutor quarterbacks, namely his star pupil.
“When I got there, (Brady) was way, way off. I think it was in his head a little bit. He wasn’t sure what he was doing wrong,” Martinez said when reached by the Herald last week. “The ball wasn’t going anywhere near where he was throwing it. Then he brought the tape in, and we went over it … I told him one thing was causing this, another thing was causing that, and we corrected what he was doing wrong. And everything else just kind of fell back into place.”
Once Martinez put Brady back on the right path, and pointed out several areas where his mechanics had gone awry, the accuracy came back pretty quick. Martinez could sense the relief in the reigning league MVP.
“He doesn’t say much. But you could just kind of see it in his aura,” Martinez said of Brady. “The confidence was back. And when that was back, then he started to fire it … he looked great. Then he went and followed it up with (a record) 940 yards (in the first two games).”
Yup. Martinez’ magic touch fixed Brady to the tune of a 517-yard throwing performance against the Dolphins in Miami, followed by 423 against the Chargers in Foxboro. It translated into seven touchdown passes the first two games.
“Within about an hour, he was back to the old Tom Brady,” Martinez said. “I guess what we did worked.”
Now, Brady did have a major hiccup last week against the Bills with four interceptions. But Martinez, who studied countless replays of each turnover, didn’t seem overly concerned. Of the four, Martinez found fault with just one.
“The throw to (Danny) Woodhead was a little bit high. He reached up and volleyed it. So it wasn’t a great throw,” Martinez said. “The one to (Chad) Ochocinco, he ran the wrong route. He was supposed to go flat. Tom threw the ball right where he would have been had he gone flat. (Ochocinco) turned up the field. And the corner cut in. It looked like he threw it right to the guy.
“The one he threw in the end zone, I thought the defensive back made a great play jumping up. He was trailing (Rob) Gronkowski. It might have been a little underthrown. The other one hit (Bills defender Marcell Dareus) in the helmet. It was a deflection. It just so happened they came all at once. Four is unacceptable, especially to Tom.”
Martinez e-mailed Brady following the game with his analysis of the performance and also some words of advice.
“I told him, if he starts thinking about interceptions … ‘You have to be relaxed. You have to do it, the way you do it,’ ” Martinez said. “The big thing I said is, ‘Don’t change. You’re going good because you’re flowing and everything works and you don’t think much. As soon as things go wrong, you start to overthink. And as soon as you overthink, you don’t respond muscular-wise the same way. And then, the mechanics of the delivery go off.’ ”
We couldn’t help but ask Martinez if he thought Brady and Ochocinco would ever click. Martinez said he better because there would be a defense like the Jets’ last year, that would shut down Wes Welker and Deion Branch.
“I don’t know (if Ochocinco) will ever get it,” Martinez said. “But I think the Patriots [team stats] really need him for the reason they got him. They need him to be the extra guy to balance the field.”
The last two offseasons, Martinez has gone to Los Angeles to watch Brady and Welker train together. That, he said, is what Ochocinco needs to get on the same page with Brady.
“A lot of guys play playground pass offenses,” Martinez said. “The Patriots’ offense is very precise. If a route is seven yards, that’s where you have to be. That’s where Tommy is going to throw it: seven yards.”
Martinez, who lives out in the Bay Area, was undecided if he would attend the game today in Oakland or watch from home. Sure he’d love to visit again with No. 12, but he also knows Brady will be busy with family and friends.
“I know how close he and I are. He’s in his hometown. He has a lot of high school friends and family to see. I understand that,” Martinez said. “He doesn’t have to say, ‘I want you to come to the game.’ I’m fine.
“I’ll watch it, just like I would anywhere else, and take notes. We’ll converse back and forth. I think he enjoys having someone to rub it off on.”
It’s interesting to note Martinez made one other trip to Boston during his time working with Brady. It was two years ago, right before a game against Jacksonville. All Brady did that game was go 23-for-26 with four TD passes in a 35-7 Pats win.
“It’s fun doing it,” Martinez said. “In life, I happen to coach quarterbacks. If you teach somebody something, and to see that smile on their face, and the pleasure they get out of it, and if they throw the ball correctly and the enjoyment it brings, that brings joy to me. It puts a smile on my face.”
Problems manning up
ESPN analyst Herm Edwards said the Patriots corners, primarily Leigh Bodden and Devin McCourty, are struggling in the man-to-man coverage the team is employing this season because it’s tougher to play, as necessitated, with your back to the ball.
“They’re struggling especially when their backs are to the quarterback and they can’t see the ball come out,” Edwards said. “Guys are catching balls on them when they don’t see it come out of the quarterback’s hand. When you’re in man-to-man, you’re not going to see the ball come out if you’re a corner. You’ve got to go on instincts, you’ve got to play the receivers’ hands, and try to make the play that way. To me, that’s where a lot of big plays are happening when I watch them. People are seeing when they turn their backs, just throw it, because they’re not playing well reacting to the football.”
The former Jets and Chiefs coach suggested the Pats should switch up to a zone for a while, which might help McCourty especially.
“Sometimes, you just have to play a little more zone, and let the corners use their eyes and see the whole play. When you’re in man-to-man, and your back is away from that quarterback, and that quarterback has time, it’s tough.”
Edwards was a premier defensive back in his day. His rookie year, he came in, and much like McCourty, had six interceptions and was ready to set the world on fire. He knows all about the second-year blues.
“Your second year, people get a book on you, they know who you are, and people start game-planning on you,” Edwards said. “And you as a player, try to do too much. All of a sudden, you try to make plays, rather than let the play come to you. What he’s got to do, is don’t press, and don’t guess. You want to make a play so bad, you start pressing, and guessing. And then, you’re behind the 8-ball. Because every time you start guessing, you guess wrong. Hey, this is a league where, if they see you struggling, they don’t stop, until you stop it.” …
After the Raiders beat the Denver Broncos on Monday night to open the season, the Oakland players awarded the game ball to Al Davis. The Raiders owner accepted, but then growled: “A game ball is good, but give me a trophy at the end of the season!”
Former Patriots [team stats] Pro Bowler and current Raiders star Richard Seymour [stats] spoke fondly of Davis during an interview last week with the Herald: “I get calls from him often. His primary goal is to give us everything we need to win. Everything about him is about taking care of his players. His players, to him, are family. He really does love his players. You want to play hard for someone like that.”
Grounding of the Jets
The Raiders ran all over the Jets last week. It was somewhat stunning, considering how strong the Jets are at defending the run. On Thursday, Jets coach Rex Ryan was asked if those struggles have anything to do with reduction in padded practices.
“Well, no, there’s no excuse, but I think that’s the first thing we’d always do. We’d work those,” Ryan told the New York media. “You’d have triangle reads, we called them. (We) put the guy in the shade and put three blockers there, and we’d just work the heck out of techniques, every single guy. We’d go full speed on each other. Right now, you can’t do it. You’ve only got the one padded practice (per week). You’re not going to do it in shells, so that’s probably the only big difference preparation-wise.” …
Apparently, the Jets aren’t listening to Joe Namath, who thinks they may be a bit too overconfident for their own good. To wit, here’s what Santonio Holmes had to say about the unbeaten Bills: “Those guys in Buffalo are putting together a great game plan. They’re spreading those guys out, letting (Ryan) Fitzpatrick pitch and catch to his receivers and his running back. They’re doing a pretty good job, but they’ve got to play the Jets this year, as well, so we’ll see what happens when they come into town.” …
Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez on Forbes magazine ranking him the most overpaid player in the NFL: “That’s another stat. I don’t know. It doesn’t matter.” …
The Chiefs are almost completely unrecognizable from last year. After committing just 14 turnovers in all of 2010, they have already turned the ball over 10 times in three games. Matt Cassel, who threw just seven interceptions last season, has thrown five in three games. No, it’s not been pretty.
Against the Chargers last week, they weren’t able to pick up a first down in the first half. Their longest play from scrimmage was four yards. Wonder what general manager Scott Pioli must be thinking.

Boston must have a large Sunday sports page. There is twice as much on the Red Sox.
For reading while waiting for kickoff.

After the Raiders beat the Denver Broncos on Monday night to open the season, the Oakland players awarded the game ball to Al Davis. The Raiders owner accepted, but then growled: “A game ball is good, but give me a trophy at the end of the season!”
This is a cool story even if it isn’t true.

Bold prediction: DHB will have a good game, 5 catches 80yards 1TD
L.Houston will have his best game of the year, he will get a sack and another hard hit on Brady that will have Brady shook.

I was going to go with less catches but it is a bold prediction, who knows the Pats do have the worst pass defense, but not sure if we will have to pass that much as long as DMC is doing his thing.

Soup needs to be careful with McCourtey.
Dude gives up tons of receptions, and will play waaaay off the ball.
Than he will cherry-pick something and get a pick 6.
Very careful Soup.

Go look at who they have played and how they have won. I was like no way last week when ESPN was talking playoffs for them. They will not sniff the playoffs and will lose there last 5 games.
