Bresnahan resolves to get run problem fixed
By Steve Corkran
Friday, October 7th, 2011 at 4:10 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Raiders defensive coordinator Chuck Breshanan knows what’s on everyone’s minds these days. He can’t run from the fact that the Raiders are being run on to the tune of 5.9 yards per carry.
Bresnahan is taking a proactive approach, rather than to try rationalize or place a positive spin on a glaring issue.
“When you give up 216 yards rushing (Buffalo) and 184 yards rushing (New England) in two games, it’s bad,” Bresnahan said. “So, do you panic? Do you push the panic button? No. We go back and we evaluate what we do, how we do it, the experience our guys have within our scheme.”
In doing so, Breshanan said, he is certain that he has the players on the roster to get the job done.
“No doubt in my mind, whatsoever,” Bresnahan said. “No doubt in my mind. And the way we practiced today, if we carry that to the field Sunday, I will be excited. Because, I’m telling you, the resolve of these players and the commitment they have right now is impressive.”
The Houston Texans are second in the AFC in rushing, behind the Raiders, and fourth overall — the Raiders are No. 1 at an average of 178.5 yards per game — and that’s precisely the kind of test Bresnahan’s welcome, and feels his players need after being gouged by the Patriots last Sunday.
The emphasis has been on discipline in practice this week, he said. That’s critical, especially when the Raiders commit eight players near the line of scrimmage against the run, one missed tackle turns a short gain into a long one, oftentimes with nothing but a safety between the ballcarrier and the goal line.
Bresnahan said he takes comfort in seeing how well his players have responded to the criticism. No one is pointing a finger, the players are asking for ways to get better and everyone is accountable.
Coach Hue Jackson echoed Bresnahan’s sentiment about no one panicking and everyone keeping things in perspective.
“A week ago (everyone) was all fired up, ‘Boy, here we go, the Raiders are doing some things,’ ” Jackson said. “This week all of a sudden, ‘Boy, you guys can’t stop the run again.’ It’s week to week. It’s what have you done for me this past week? The players understand that. They know that’s how I operate this thing. When it’s good, it’s good. When we need to get better, we need to get better. We need to get better.”
PRYCE ISN’T RIGHT
Jackson confirmed that he had in veteran defensive lineman Trevor Pryce for a visit Thursday. Ultimately, Pryce left without a contract offer because he isn’t sure if he wants to commit to the grind of a 15th NFL season.
“Sometimes, guys see football differently at this stage of their career,” Jackson said. “And making a commitment and having to do it on a high level, you’ve got to make sure you’re all in. Those are decisions people have to make, and they have to do what’s best for them and we have to do what’s best for us.”
With that said, Jackson said Pryce is in good shape and capable of playing still. He remains an option down the road.
Pryce was brought in, in part, because of the injury to defensive end Matt Shaughnessy. The Raiders aren’t sure how long Shaughnessy will be out with the shoulder injury he suffered against the New York Jets on Sept. 25.
Shaughnessy said Friday that he is “week to week” and that he doesn’t want to return to playing because of the fear of making the injury worse.
“I want to play but I know I can’t go out there and risk injuring it even more,” Shaughnessy said. “So, I got to wait until I get better.”
The plan is for Trevor Scott and Jarvis Moss to get added reps in Shaughnessy’s absence.
“It’s great because of the depth we have,” Scott said. “No matter who steps in that spot, they’re going to step up and do their job. We know we’re productive out there. So, we just have to take it from here.”
PRYOR’S SUSPENSION WINDS DOWN
Rookie quarterback Terrelle Pryor spent his Friday morning working out aside from his teammates, just as he has since Sept. 3 when his five-game suspension kicked in
That suspension ends Sunday. On Monday, Pryor will be permitted to rejoin his teammates at practice for the first time since he joined the Raiders the final week of training camp.
For the past month or so, Pryor has worked out with two or three members of the Raiders who aren’t on the coaching staff. He has been allowed to attend meetings, learn the playbook and work out at the facility.
Offensive coordinator Al Saunders said Pryor has done an impressive job learning the system and the terminology. Now, he’s eager to see him in action.
“I’m real excited to see him,” Saunders said. “We had him for a few days in training camp. … He has been really upbeat. We’re looking forward to seeing what he can do.”
The Raiders envision Pryor being their quarterback at some point. Starter Jason Campbell and backup Kyle Boller are the only two quarterbacks on the roster at this time, and they aren’t under contract beyond this season.
The Raiders will be forced to release a player to make room for Pryor on the 53-man roster.
NEW STREAK FOR HUFF
Iron man free safety Michael Huff said he is good to go after missing the Patriots game with an ankle injury. The concussion he also suffered against the Jets on Sept. 25 no longer is an issue.
The missed game ended Huff’s streak of 83 straight games to begin his NFL career. He said he is ready to start a new streak, beginning Sunday against the Texans.
“Oh, yeah, good to go,” Huff said. “One hundred percent this week.”
Adding to Huff’s motivation to play is a return to his native state.
“Anywhere in Texas is a good trip,” Huff said. “I had to buy 30 tickets for this game. No matter where we play in Texas, they’re going to be there. It’s always special to play in your home state, especially all the way out here in California. It’s definitely a big deal.”

Al: We have any player moves today?
John: Not according to our source?
Al: Why are we using source again?
John: It is actually called the BANG Raider Blog.
Al: I don’t like those people. They made me release Higgens and Nick Miller. What the hell happened to Moore? Why is he with the Patriots?
John: You were supposed to release Miller but you dumped Moore. You need to wear your glasses.
Al: Why are we using the BANG thing?
John: Because we need to win more games to put some butts in the seats.
Al: Is that why we had all those noisy folks on Sunday?
John: Yes. Its all good.
Al: No its not. I have to many people to weed through. Then, the wife wants to watch the game with me when I get home. If we are blacked out, that doesn’t happen.
John: I keep telling you to go watch the games in Madden’s television room and bring the wife. But no, you have to go out to the park….
Al: Why did I do that again? I couldn’t even see the game. That idiot Otto took over the front row. What does the BANG say?
John: They are figuring out the next guy to a…dump.
Al: I’m tired. Who is it? I got the glasses…
John: They haven’t decided yet.
Al: Then I am bringing back Higgens. Run backs are terrible on special teams.
John: UH, the blog says no.
Al: Blog, blog, blog. You would think those folks know more than me! They picking us to win?
John: Some, most of them…
Al: Dump the blog! How dare they pick the Raiders to lose…

Bresnahan said. “Do you push the panic button? No. We go back and we evaluate what we do, how we do it, the experience our guys have within our scheme.”
THE EXPERIENCE OUR GUYS HAVE WITHIN OUR SCHEME.
That sounds like a LOUD MEMO to Al Davis.
Give a zone scheme TIME to work. Like two or three years. Bucs didn’t do it overnight, neither did the Bears or Steelers.

Getthemoneyout.com is out there for the political minded football fans. The Dem.and Rep.rhetoric will only give us more of the same results. The message is simple. Now about the Raiders,”the time is now” a Hue Jackson quote.
Pryce would be not be a good fit for the Raiders at this time because the time is now for the existing Raider squad to get their Raider on!! The problem at this point must be fixed with in house players. The Champions are in house and somehow that message must get through to the players and I believe Hue will get it done.
Mcfadden must stay in the game as much as possible to keep the pressure on the Texans Defensive.
Van Dyke if you get on the field make the Raider nation proud. I know Chekwa has been playing well but I also want DVD to get out and get come good experience and hopefully help the team out.
October 7th, 2011 at 5:01 pm
I’m more worried about the Texans, than last week’s game. They beat the Steelers last week, Run the ball well, defend the run better than we do, defend the pass better than we do, sack the QB better than we do.
October 7th, 2011 at 5:04 pm

October 7th, 2011 at 5:19 pm
Jason Campbell laughed when Eric Davis asked him if he’s the right Guy to take raiders to playoffs. .. he said… hey this offense is night n day compared to when I got here.. …. can’t argue with that.. jabust was a bad nightmare compared to what we have now..
October 7th, 2011 at 5:42 pm
Its good that Shaughnessy is taking his time coming back. Its also good that Pryce is an option down the road. The ‘niners used the same tactic when they were winning it all. You have some players ’stashed’ so when the playoffs come around you have a couple of fresh players on O and a couple of fresh players on D. Things run on a very fine edge in the NFL and a couple of pairs of fresh legs on both sides of the ball can make all the difference in the world. I’m surprised no one else saw this little scam Walsh used to run every year.
October 7th, 2011 at 5:45 pm
One thing’s for sure. We will fight this week in Texas. Ghostraider’s comment about the jabust nightmare reminds me of when he used to get tackled and just slowly fall over like a timber in a forest with a slight smirk on his face. Was it the purple drank?

Kool, playing the Texans on the road will be tough but I think a Brady QBed offense is much more of a challenge. These are the types of games we have to win. If we can’t win games like the one coming up then we won’t be able to do much in the playoffs even if the Raiders get there.

Everyone thinks the key is to stop the run and I do agree. But IMO Jford has to get in the mix he has to make someplays either returns or most imposrtantly in the offense. If we our passing game takes a step forward we could hang 40 on Texans. Our passing game can set up the run as well as the run can set up the pass.
We can go deep on this team and we need to get DMC off in the passing game. Run Bush and also stop forgetting about TJ gte him the ball in open space make them tackle TJ DMC and Ford in open space. Once we get a good they’ll have to pass.
The key to this game is JACOBY FORD……….period
October 7th, 2011 at 6:20 pm
Once we get a good lead they’ll have to pass to keep up.
October 7th, 2011 at 6:22 pm
If we hang 40 on the Texans we win.
October 7th, 2011 at 6:24 pm
We need DHB, Moore and Ford to have good games and it looks like Boss will make us forget all about Zake Miller.
October 7th, 2011 at 6:25 pm
Zake
October 7th, 2011 at 6:26 pm
I meant Zack. Third times a charm.
October 7th, 2011 at 6:29 pm
The reason I say Ford is because of the extreme pressure he puts on a defense, he has to become a factor again in this offense. They have to double Ford which has a affect on what Moore will see as well as DHB. Getting a hot slot rec’r in this scheme will do wonders for the rest of the players. There’s no way they can focus on the runnin game with that kid running around in their secondary. So it helps everyone.
October 7th, 2011 at 6:30 pm
I hope zake Miller is enjoying his time in rainville. .USA.. … that’s OK… I’m calling him zake. .. screw Miller! !
October 7th, 2011 at 6:33 pm
I think if we use Taiwan on some screen passes when they think were handing the ball off to dmac. .. we can do a lot of damage. .. Taiwan reminds me a of a nice RB we had a few yrs ago… Napoleon Kaufman. .. man he was good and fast.. just like Taiwan. ..
October 7th, 2011 at 6:37 pm
Hue, Saunders and their “toys” are the reasons why I think the Raiders win this game.
October 7th, 2011 at 6:39 pm
To think Taiwan and That Man are rookies. It is like Priest says, what until they get experience.
October 7th, 2011 at 6:39 pm
That is a very good comparison although TJ might even be faster than Nap but yeah great comparison. Although IMO TJ is very similar to CJ2K and Jamaal Charles in terms of biuld and running style.
October 7th, 2011 at 6:39 pm
Poor Nap. I still remember that injury…….
October 7th, 2011 at 6:39 pm
Think of the teams that stop the run really well. What do they all have in common? A real good MLB. Where’s ours? ‘nuf said. Schemes don’t make tackles, GOOD middle linebackers do.
October 7th, 2011 at 6:43 pm
Look at the Ravens. Different players but each year their D does well against the run and Ray Lewis is the glue holding them together.
October 7th, 2011 at 6:44 pm
Romac is having a bad year so far but IMO he is everything you want in a MLB but he has to start playing faster. He’s thinking way too much which affects your reaction time also i think he’s playing too heavy or not as conditioned as he should be.
October 7th, 2011 at 6:47 pm
the texans are going to run so much play action. our guys should be ready for that. if we stay discipline we can get a sack or two on the roll-out.
October 7th, 2011 at 6:50 pm
Otis60 Ray lewis is the measuring stick but it took Ray about a year before he took off. He came in at 230 was more quick than anything then he picked up weight and the game started to slow down for him due to experience and that’s when he started to take off. He struggled a bit early. They all do that position is a thinking man’s position it carries a ton of responsibility. It’ll take him a while to learn this new system which is the secodn system he’s learning in 2 years so to a certain extent he gets a pass but he has to play HARDER NOW!
October 7th, 2011 at 6:50 pm
Romac is only 22 in his second year, he has to play better but give him more time. I know its not easy. I watched him being blocked out the play a few times last week, but I really believe he will come around. this D still needs another “tested vet” like seymour. if we had a vet LB it would be easier.
October 7th, 2011 at 6:50 pm
I have been trying to give McClain the benefit of the doubt. He is playing slow and seems to be thinking too much, instead of reacting. Does he lack instinct or is he going to learn to play faster? Huff looked slow and out of position two years ago and I think he’s played well the last two years. I’m hoping the same will happen for McClain, but it needs to happen soon.

As I mentioned before, I have hope for Romac because he is a film fiend. Guys with extra working during their free time motivation will eventually have the light click in their head. Your right Priest, he has to play harder now. This season could be really special for the Raiders if the D picks it up a notch or two.
October 7th, 2011 at 6:54 pm
Kell, I love the 3-4, The Raiders won SB XVIII in a three-four D, but we certainly don’t have the personnel for it now, we don’t even have three good linebackers.
October 7th, 2011 at 6:55 pm
We have trouble putting consistent pressure with a four man rush. I would hate to see what would happen with rushing three. Then again, good LB’s can make up the difference.
October 7th, 2011 at 6:56 pm
i say use our first round pick to get a couple of players to help the D. we’ve heard from the Cork that Al doesnt like to draft LBs in the first round. trade some team for a top notch WLB and safety/cb. maybe like Witherspoon and finnegan from tenn. we are deep in every position on offense. the D has to be addressed.
October 7th, 2011 at 6:58 pm
Elway’s Teeth
Just saying. The Teams that stop the run real well, play a 3-4. Not Al Davis’ antiquated defense.
So far this year the Raiders are 29th in run Defense:
in 2010 they were 29th
in 2009 they were 29th
in 2008 they were 31st
in 2007 they were 31st
in 2006 they were 25th
in 2005 they were 25th
in 2004 they were 22nd
in 2003 they were 32nd.
Why do you so-called fans continue to throw our players under the bus?
Who’s the Architect of the Defense?
Now, what year did RoMac get here, again?
October 7th, 2011 at 6:59 pm

#83 I remember that D. The trouble is the Raiders D of that era had a very poor pass rush but excellent DB’s and very good LB’s. That D would have been destroyed in today’s NFL where the DB’s can’t manhandle the receivers like they could back then. That being said, it does show the Raiders can change their defensive scheme and still win.

Some ignorant suckas scheme has nothing to do with it……if you knew a single thing about football you’d know that. Schemes don’t play players do we’re using a young kid at MLB who’s carrying a load and is still young yet anybody with half a brain can see that. Our MLB has plays he cna make and isn’t making them that’s why the frustration from all the fans.
Blaming Al Davis for not tackling is for senile fools…
October 7th, 2011 at 7:31 pm
Priest, you’re right, it is not all about schemes but they do make a difference, especially if the players on the team can’t pick up the slack. That is why I was a fan of Willie Shaw. He adjusted the defense towards the players he had.
October 7th, 2011 at 7:34 pm
The NYG won a SB a couple of years ago running the same scheme we run now in fact the Dline coach is now coaching the Raiders. the last time we went to the SB we had a 4man line and dominated. It doesn’t matter what scheme you run it matters how well you run it…………period

October 7th, 2011 at 7:36 pm
Too late to fix the defense this season. Hopefully they just start playing better football somehow.
At this rate, here are some things I’d like to see after the season:
Draft Landry Jones, RGIII or Morris Claiborne
Trade Tommy Kelly – average pass-rushing DT making Barry Cofield money… tends to be underwhelming when Seymour is not next to him. Ease some pressure on the salary cap, look for a better 1-tech player.
Sign MLB D’Qwell Jackson, WLB Manny Lawson, and DT/NT Aubrayo Franklin in free agency.
Move McClain to SLB, put Wimbley at RDE more freuently.
Rotate Houston, Franklin, and Seymour at DT and Wimbley, Shaughnessy, Seymour, Moss and Scott at DE.
The Raiders are a few players away from being a potentially dominant team. Better gap control along the defensive line and some more athletic, rangey players with the ability to make plays will go a long way. Also need to find a long-term answer at QB. If the Raiders want to beat teams like the Packers and Patriots, they need a QB who is capable of taking over games.
October 7th, 2011 at 7:37 pm
I agree with you Priest if we have the horses but we don’t. Here I go again with beating the dead horse, but letting Nnamdi was a huge mistake.
October 7th, 2011 at 7:38 pm
Also, either bring back John Marshall (who had this defense playing hard, 5-safety sets aside… at least he seemed to get the most out of Michael Huff) or promote Rod Woodson. Maybe Al will listen to Woodson more than… well, every other defensive coordinator the Raiders have had in recent memory.
Wishful thinking…

Huff and MM34 coming back healthy should also make a big difference.
October 7th, 2011 at 7:42 pm
Hopefully Al is willing to spend more money in FA since the Raiders don’t have many draft picks after this season.
And infusion of 2 or 3 key veterans could help quite a bit, but they have to be the RIGHT veterans.

Big mistake, huge mistake and tragic mistake. Can’t figure it out mistake and why mistake. Nnamdi might be struggling in the city of brotherly love, but he didn’t struggle in Oaktown. My thoughts exactly. He values his players more than his coaches, so who better for a coaching position than an ex-player? Assuming he can do the job, that is…
October 7th, 2011 at 7:44 pm
If McClain improves and we can find another late round gem like Rod Martin at LB we will be fine next year. If our D steps it up a notch or two will will be doing really well unless the injury bug keeps biting us.
October 7th, 2011 at 7:44 pm
Otis60 And Bresh needs to do the same thing take some of the the playbook out until they can play freer IMO we are playing slow as a defense because he’s running a very complicated defense. Anyone who thinks we only play man doesn’t watch this team play we play a lot of zone and we did last year as well. We blitz also quite a bit our problem more than anything is when we do blitz we’re not getting there. Teams are throwing short quick passes to beat the rush after we beat Denver the way we did no one else is playing us straight up. It’s all crossing patterns screens and picks. The jets are the only teams that took us straight on and you saw what happened.
Now we’re facing another team that plays smash mouth football and that’s what we do best let’s see how we do. Texans will come right at us and test us no dinks and dunks and picks. They matchup and try to enfluence you. let’s see who wins.
October 7th, 2011 at 7:44 pm
Woodson had talent but he also had smarts during his playing days. I am hoping that translates to being a good coach.
October 7th, 2011 at 7:46 pm
I think our D can go smash mouth with anyone but offenses are really taking advantage of the rules, schemes and the lack of training camp.
October 7th, 2011 at 7:47 pm
State of the Raider Defense:
big trouble and in a world of hurt. Brutal and in search of a leader. An identity crisis. Penalty prone and not all that. Toast, burnt toast. All toast. Fcking bulllsch1tt toast!
October 7th, 2011 at 7:48 pm
Otis60 I’m not sure we don’t have the horses I think we do but they ahve to play well. We could always use better players that goes without saying every team wants better players. I think we have good enough players to do what we need done IF and I say IF they playwell.
October 7th, 2011 at 7:50 pm
Our D is so bad we telegraph our paricular scheme and the QB can see it cause we can’t disguise it and he calls the play as he walks to the line. Not an audible because thats how teams roll on us. They wait to see our scheme set. Pay close attention next time and you’ll see it. We give it away.

Most on this blog are high on our rookie DB’s as am I. They are being thrown to the lions and so far they are doing pretty good. The Patriots and this year’s Bills can make any defense look bad. I still say it rests on McClain. He is the QB of the defense and hopefully someday the leader of the D. A healthy Huff and MM34 will go a long way in improving D play.

They also know when to throw underneath, screen, see our weak sides and seem to move at will. Smart teams read us with ease. We give it away. The Jets are stupid. But a good QG will eat our lunch.
Our schemes are just as good as any teams, we just need to disguise it, not show it. Our attacks need the ’surprise’ element. Something it lacks.
October 7th, 2011 at 7:58 pm
Run defense will come up huge THIS week, obviously. That’s why Houston will probably only win by a few. Our offense has been exposed, outright. Much bigger issue than defense.
October 7th, 2011 at 7:58 pm
Sully it was said on this blog McClain was the worst MLB in the history of the Raiders. I said it was between Morrison, McClain ( I think he will be a good LB in the future ) and the MLB’s for the 1961 and 1962 Raiders. Maybe it is poor MLB play or maybe it is scheme or both.
October 7th, 2011 at 7:59 pm
I have more faith in JC than you do Sully so if you are right and our run D comes up huge, we win.
October 7th, 2011 at 8:00 pm
JB He has to grow up simple as that…..it’s not going to get easier. He just has to play faster the sooner the better.
October 7th, 2011 at 8:00 pm
Every opponent we face this year is going to watch game tape to see how Belichick held the same defense that scored 34 on the Jets to only 19. And the answer is glaring.
October 7th, 2011 at 8:01 pm
We could have really used him playing faster during the Bills game.
October 7th, 2011 at 8:02 pm
LB-unfriendly scheme. Too often Raider linebackers are left in coverage on players like Vernon Davis, LT, etc.. If you’re going to put your linebackers in that position, you better draft some complete freaks of nature who can cover, shed blocks, be all over the field all the time… Doesn’t help that the Raider defensive linemen have a terrible habit of over-pursuing the play, letting good cutback runners get to the second level, many times with a guard or tackle in front of them.
October 7th, 2011 at 8:03 pm
RoMac isn’t by himself in this but he anchors this defense if he doesn’t play well it makes what the others do look even worse.
I like RoMac a lot and talent is NOT his problem he’s just thinking way too much and not reacting.
October 7th, 2011 at 8:03 pm
I will make a prediction. JC will not make an interception this year as boneheaded as the one he threw in the end zone against the Patriots. If he does that means dementia is setting in.
October 7th, 2011 at 8:04 pm
I think Jason Campbell has too much self esteem to play this game. Rather, he has the wrong kind of self esteem for this game. Jason has the kind of self esteem where he doesn’t need to prove himself. He’s ok with himself. He has hippie self esteem. In the NFL, you need Hells Angel self esteem. No slight goes unanswered. Someone disrespects you, you make them pay. Campbell just didn’t care that NE was stacking the box on him. He was just so coy and reserved, totally unprovoked. It’s good that he wasn’t agitated, but he should have been provoked. Should have been just fired up. Should have been running down field to high five every single receiver that caught the ball, Favre style. He should have just been jacked. But he didn’t care. And that’s why he didn’t make sure to throw that ball away to where Chung or no other NE defender could get it. He really doesn’t care.
October 7th, 2011 at 8:06 pm
I think he cares. He is just indecisive at times. That is why I want Moore to be the featured receiver. He seems to really trust That Man. Same goes with Ford.
October 7th, 2011 at 8:08 pm
I have never seen Jason Campbell even remotely look like he cares. Ever. In his career. I think he’ll have a fine career after football. Probably show business. Maybe he should go to law school. He’s an intelligent, confident, handsome man. But he’s no football player.
October 7th, 2011 at 8:08 pm
YA what the hell is a LB unfriendly scheme……??
That is excuse making IMHO…
October 7th, 2011 at 8:09 pm

October 7th, 2011 at 8:10 pm
He’s won at every level minus the NFL so he is a football player. We have good backs, O line and receivers, actually great. We just need JC to be average.
October 7th, 2011 at 8:11 pm
Responding to MR’s lunacy is lunacy the boy is dumb as a box of rocks……he’s here for arguemnt sake only.
October 7th, 2011 at 8:12 pm
Maybe it is just his personality. There are guys out there who are as cool as ice but they could destroy the average person without breaking a sweat. Maybe his fire is inside.
October 7th, 2011 at 8:12 pm
Jason’s won at every level beside the NFL because he’s extremely talented. That’s going to happen. He’s not the first overachieving QB to make it into this league, he’s not the last. Look at all of the 1st round QBs to bust over the years. Never mind the obvious ones like Russell and Leaf. So many others. The road’s full of carnage. And in a couple of years, that road will include Jason Campbell.
October 7th, 2011 at 8:13 pm

October 7th, 2011 at 8:15 pm
Otis, I absolutely agree that it’s Jason’s personality. Part of his personality isn’t to care about games where you throw a ball. His intellect is above football.
October 7th, 2011 at 8:15 pm
Minus our QB and center, I think we are better offensively than the 2002 team.
October 7th, 2011 at 8:17 pm

No other team uses LBs in man coverage as often as the Raiders. If you don’t get the right kind of players, playing that way is going to be a disaster.
Over the past decade or so the Raider OLBs have frequently been converted DEs, and the Raider MLBs are constantly getting walled off by blockers or over-pursuing the play because they’re in man coverage, forcing them to have to cut back across the field trailing the ball carrier.
Either the Raider defense needs to get better at occupying blockers at the LOS, or they need to find linebackers who can play the way they need them to. I don’t see how that’s an excuse for anyone.
October 7th, 2011 at 8:19 pm
His intellect doesn’t permit him to care about those interceptions, Otis. That’s why he made the errant throws in the first place. A dumber QB curses himself for those picks. Campbell is just totally ok with it, like Chevy Chase in Caddyshack. It’s all relative to him.

Our D coordinator can say what be wants to the media…. But mark my word if this D finishes last defending the run…. He will be fired…. He sounds like we already played the Texans and we stopped the run…. Last Year we got gashed by this team wait every time we played them…. They r a version of the old Broncos…. With Kubiak at the helm…. If we can’t beat them now then u know we r still an average team… But we should still be optimistic because it is very early still and we r only one game back in the division… We get to see if the defense can handle the best zone blocking team in the NFL….. It’s finesse running against power running….. Can’t wait and my prediction for this weekend Raiders 17 Texans 13…. Both defenses show up and our power running by committee will nudge it out….

4-3 MLBs in 2012 free agency:
D’Quwell Jackson
Curtis Lofton
David Hawthorne
Couple one of those guys with Manny Lawson at WLB (or maybe trade for Keith Rivers?), and move McClain to SLB where his skills are more suited, and you have potentially very solid LB corps.
Wimbley at RDE, Houston (who can at the very least do Tommy Kelly’s job), Seymour, and Shaughnessy at LDE as the defensive line would be a slight improvement. Houston is best suited to DT and he’s stronger against the run than Kelly, even though neither are ideal fits for 1-tech DT. DT/NT Aubrayo Franklin is an impending free agent, and he could be a key contributor in obvious running situations as well as the goal line defense (especially if Henderson sticks around). Underwhelming class of DTs in the 2012 draft, so it would give the Raiders at least one season before finding a true 1-tech gap-plugger in the draft as the long-term solution next to Houston.
With the 1st round pick? Lots of quality CBs and QBs… Raiders will probably not be drafting high enough for Burfict, and I’m not very high on Te’o or Keuchly (who remind me a lot of McClain – not ideal scheme fits for the Raiders). CBs Claiborne and Gilmore would be perfect additions if available. Of course, if a potential long-term solution at QB is still on the board, the Raiders shouldn’t hesitate to take him. Landry Jones may already be gone by the time the Raiders pick, though. It remains to be seen how Robert Griffin III finishes the season but he may be an option.
The Raiders are close. I still predict them finishing the season no better than 9-7. But they’re going to have the opportunity to take the next step, and I hope they take advantage of it.

Plenty of teams make due with LBs who aren’t the best coverage guys. 3-4 schemes tend to hide their LBs a little more in terms of coverage and the amount of blockers they are required to take on.
But I agree in the sense that the elite players – Willis, Beason, Lewis, Jackson, Dansby, etc. – are all solid in coverage. Still, none of those guys are asked to play man-to-man nearly as much as Raider LBs are.
Personally? I think McClain is talented enough to be a starting SLB in the 4-3. Would certainly be a better ILB in a 3-4. Time will tell, maybe he’ll turn the corner, but the Raiders can’t sit back and let the defense, especially the run defense, be as poor as it has been over the past decade. They need an infusion of talent.

Check him out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KvcsffTQojI
October 7th, 2011 at 9:27 pm
I think what you are trying to say is that certain LB’s have certain strengths and weaknesses which is true with any player playing any position. The reason teams try to get RB’s and WR’s isolated on LB’s is because they cannot cover like a cornerthey also try to get TE’s on corners because of that matchup. But that is just strategythat will always happen but You have to recognize it and switch if possible or go to another package to defend it.
But IMO only offenses make it unfriendly for LB’s by their schemes then defenses have to adjust accordingly. Go to dime and nickle packages. All that means is matchup.
If that’s what you mean then I agree……an offense can be a bad matchup for LB’s but a diffferent offense can be a great matchup. It has nothing to do with the basic scheme of the defense itself. LB’s are LB’s CB’s are CB’s Dlineman are Dlineman you need all in any scheme……….period

Priest, I hear what you are saying & I don’t disagree. I don’t see RoMac as a throwaway but he may need to be relocated to SLB. He doesn’t seem to have the fire necessary for a 4-3 MLB. As far as Burfict goes, he just seems to ooze the kind of pent up energy needed at MLB – just waiting to meet the opponent and blow him up. The only way I see Romac as a throwaway is if he reverts to a JaLoser attitude.

JB Burfict is crazy he may be the mental makeup YOU like and I do to. Beikert was a great MLB but he was just like RoMac. In fact I think RoMac has more fire than Beikert ever did he jsut needs to make plays mental makeup aside he needs to play well if he does that this discussion doesn’t happen.
I’ve seen RoMac piledrive fools and slam ‘em he jsut needs to fire his gun………….period
October 7th, 2011 at 9:44 pm
My point is id rather have a good scheme than the starting defense for either pro bowl team. Good scheme can make average players great.
October 7th, 2011 at 9:46 pm
TJ, Let’s hope Romac remembers to load the gun. Then remembers to pull the trigger. He’s been operating at half speed these last couple of weeks. Maybe there’s something else going on that we don’t know about. Keep a positive thought. Maybe he’ll come around. If not, HuJack needs to do something drastic to get his attention.

Guys Players have to play scheme is scheme is scheme any scheme you choose the players have to play. I don’t care what scheme it is if they can’t lineup against the variety of offenses in this league and play football the scheme aint gonna help them get it done……………period
==================================================
I agree with this take for the most part.
There are 3 players that are not playing to their pay and expectations. They are not being difference makers…guys that lead your defense.
Seymour, Kelly, Wimbley are being paid to be ELITE talent. Through 4 games they have not demonstrated this. They need to own up to the trust Al Davis put into them! Period
Who’s making that key stop…getting the critical sack or heavy pressure.
Its not happening….who’s the guy the opponent says…man, we gotta double this guy or design plays away from this guy…
Its not happening. Sure they are doing ok…but not special.
You don’t pay top dollar for people to be just guys.
If those three would play to their expectation…it would carry the rest of the defense.
The only scheme problem I see is not having a run stuffing NT up the middle and playing two pass rush guys at the position
October 7th, 2011 at 9:48 pm
I’ve never seen a scheme of any kind make average players great Ive seen plenty of the reverse players make schemes not the other way around. A great scheme can help great players play great a bad scheme can hurt great players if they can do what they do. But no scheme can make an average player great that IMO is stupid.
October 7th, 2011 at 9:53 pm
You think anyone who doesn’t agree with you is stupid.
October 7th, 2011 at 9:53 pm
I think what you’re trying to about schemes may work in highschool or even college but in the NFL schemes are just a way to get linedup just a formation players are way to talented at this level for a scheme to make an average player great. It can help a great player play great but NOTHING can help an average player be great.
NOT at the this level you are what you are.
October 7th, 2011 at 9:55 pm
The Eagles scheme isn’t doing much for Nnamdi.
October 7th, 2011 at 9:55 pm
I don’t think YOU are stupid I think that opinion is stupid BIG DIFFERENCE!!
October 7th, 2011 at 9:58 pm
He’s never played in that before give him time to adjust great players will always find a way to fit in now if I was the coach I’d put Nnamdi where he was. Putting a great player in a bad position is not good as I said in post#189 but that player is already GREAT!
October 7th, 2011 at 9:59 pm
So you think the good run stopping defenses in the league would be just as successful stopping the run using our 40+ year old scheme? There’s a reason nobody uses it anymore.
October 7th, 2011 at 10:00 pm
Not every player is Ray Lewis, though. You can’t expect to have an All-Pro at every position. You have to put your players in position
Now of course, the expectation when you draft a player in the Top 10 is that they WILL have a consistent game-changing effect on the field. The expectations McClain faces are the same DHB faces, although admittedly McClain was billed as a safe pick and polished player whereas DHB was not.
The point is, you can’t expect every player you draft to do everything well. You have to put them in positions that fit their skill set so they can succeed. If you happen to find a playmaker at any position, that’s great. But at least half of the players your team fields are inevitably going to be guys that are simply serviceable players who quietly get the job done. Scheme-wise, you have to adapt to fit the strengths of the players on your roster.
I think McClain is eventually going to be a solid pro. As it is right now? I don’t think McClain is capable of doing the things the Raider defense requires of him. He plays high, isn’t very instinctive, and has trouble fighting through blocks at the line of scrimmage. On the strong side? I think his deficiencies will be masked if he’s mostly asked to set the edge on running plays, and occasionally cover TEs.
This, of course, assumes the Raiders would be in position to find a big-time player at MLB… but as I mentioned in post 166, there will likely be some proven playmakers available in free agency.
October 7th, 2011 at 10:00 pm
Great coaches let great players be great is really that simply but NOT simplistic.

most free agents who come to Oakland do it for money that Al pays over the market value. And once they get here they turn down the intensity until the contract year. They don’t come here to win the super bowl which will require max effort 24/7/365.
NFL players look at the Raiders organization as a country club of sorts. Case and point Richard Seymour so call stud up the middle, the disrupter, the captain.

Blaming the scheme is BS.It is the players not carrying out the scheme properly that is the problem.Putting the blame on McClain is also BS.How often do you see our outside LBers forcing the plays into the middle?Wimbley may be a good pass rusher but he disappears on running plays, often being drawn towards the middle while the run goes around the end.Same can be said for Groves.McClain can’t cover the whole field and he receives little help from the other two.

Lefty12 You may have a point too, I’ve watched Wimbley on run plays and he’s either too wide or gets washed. Last year he really set the edge this year he’s been off and on my issue with RoMac was in the Bills game in the second half when he looked totally GASSED. He’s playing the pass better than he is the run and and he seems to be disengaged at times which just may be he;’s just thinking to much.

Why does Mike Bell on ESPN 2 say: “The Highlight Express starts…not now, but RIGHT now”.?
It doesn’t make any sense.
I know there are bigger problems in the world but this really irratates me. He thinks he’s so “dope” by saying that, but he needs to be fired not now…but RIGHT now.

The doctor at the walk-in clinic blames my five pounds of roids on the Raider-Patriot game. Said the Raiders loss made me drink more thus the runs more thus the roids. So the doc removed them (I wont go into detail) and said not to drink during Raider games. And yes JB, the Ass is the boss. It truly has only one purpose, and it better work correctly.

All I know is the Raiders better beat those two-bit rank degenerate texans on Sunday. Those bums could use a good ass kicking and they deserve it too, cause they suck. They are odorous, and like that rotten team in denver, they probably want to get beat. Like have the wood layed on them. And what better team than the Raiders to dispense an ass whoop on them.
October 7th, 2011 at 11:33 pm
Priest,it isn’t right when people try and put all the blame on 1 guy.I don’t see Groves or Wimbley making nearly enough plays against the run.At least McClain is making tackles.Where are the other 2 LBers? Also,as you say,McClain is doing a more than adequate job against the pass.He needs help from the outside guys against the run and IMO,he isn’t getting it.
October 7th, 2011 at 11:37 pm
Butt Hurt
Home remedy: Wrap a rubber band around the base tightly – supposed to cut off blood circulation. Theoretically, the “Roid” dries up and dies – then falls off. Brings a total new meaning to Roid rage.
October 7th, 2011 at 11:42 pm
Look at all the teams that are good against the run and they all have superior LBers. Our Dline is damn good. They aren’t the problem despite what some would have us believe. Our problem is our LBers, specifically our outside LBers. How often do one of them make a play at or behind the line? The answer is seldom if ever-(I’m talking about running plays, not passes.)
October 7th, 2011 at 11:49 pm
Lefty,
You are right. All 3 of our LB’s are under performing. Wimbley got his payday and doesn’t done squat since. Groves has been suspect since he got here. And now, Romac seems to be regressing from earlier successes. Romac has just looked GASSED and is running at half speed while only arm tackling. He’s not blowing anybody up. I’m not sure he has the requisite killer instinct. Let’s put Wimbley in Rotation on the D-line and move Romac to SLB once we get a real MLB in here. Then, look for a Groves replacement.
October 7th, 2011 at 11:52 pm
Later guys – gotta run.
October 8th, 2011 at 12:03 am
McClain’s problem is everyone wants him to be Ray Lewis and blow people up.He isn’t that kind of player. We should give him some slack and let him grow.We are too impatient and want instant stardom.Calling players busts and trying to replace them after 1 or 2 years is very shortsighted,IMO.
October 8th, 2011 at 12:14 am
For those who want raw numbers on targets:
Routt 10-24 94; 42% completion against (9yds/comp)
Chekwa 9-14 126; 64% completion against (14yds/comp)
Porter 7-12 99; 58% completion against (14yds/comp)
Branch 7-18 95; 39% completion against (13yds/comp)
McClain 21-32 231 66% completion against (11yds/comp)
Yep, McClain is getting burned pretty badly.
October 8th, 2011 at 12:16 am
McClain’s problem is that he plays in Al Davis’ defense with Al Davis’ Defensive coordinator.
October 8th, 2011 at 12:16 am
Our biggest problem is that our players seem to take longer to develop. Like we are giving them 2-3 years of sucking pretty badly on high draft picks when they are normally reaching their peak pretty quickly.
Some of the WRs produced in their first year drafted more than DHB has done in 3 years. Does that mean he’ll never be good. No, it doesn’t. It’s just that we picked more of a project.
McClain shouldn’t have been a project. The only thing I can think of is that he’s not comfortable in this new scheme yet installed by Brenehan…or he just sucks…but I think he regressed this year so he’s probably not comfortable yet which opefully as the year goes on he plays more comfortably and thus make smore plays.
October 8th, 2011 at 12:18 am
Just watched a highlight film of Vontaze Burfict…man, i’d trade up to get him playing along side of McClain. Like the black Romanowski!

October 8th, 2011 at 12:20 am

sullivan–i just can never get used to what an idiot u really are. this new one about campbell is right up there to your last fantasy about hue already headed out b/c davis was mad at him. campbell is cool-headed. it’s a good trait. brady is cool-headed too. jc is playing well. he made a stupid play. he’s a pro and he’s been around. more importantly, he’s confident and knows he has a lot of games left. why worry about a mistake you’ve made when it can’t be taken back? he is focused on the next game. how you handle adversity is a testament to your character. and jc is continuing to impress w/ his preparation, poise, and talent. he is blossoming, as his supporters hoped he would. one mistake doesn’t change that. interceptions happen. it was a bad one, but we’ll survive. 10-6 is still in the cards.

zach miller= 8 rec/62 yards.
so much for losing out on miller.
October 8th, 2011 at 7:01 am
In a bad scheme great players look average, good players look bad, average players look worse, bad players look awful. AD’s antiquated defense (with only one decent corner) in the hands of the incompetent Bresnahan = another wasted season. Too bad, because the Hand Job offense is looking special.
October 8th, 2011 at 7:10 am
With Nnamdi and last year’s D coordinator we’re a top ten defense and in the AFC championship game. What a difference one player and a decent coordinator can make. This is the worst Raider defense we’ve seen in years. And we’ve seen some bad ones the past ten. Any team that spreads us out will kill us. Simple as death. We have no answer. Thank you Mr. Davis for your ongoing commitment to excellence.
October 8th, 2011 at 7:14 am
Why is Marshall gone? Because he was a Cable guy and under Cable’s protection he deviated from the AD formula and ran some creative blitz schemes that actually worked. With the exception of a few games during which OUR BEST DEFENSIVE PLAYER was injured, we had the best defense we’ve had since CWood and Allen manned the corners.
October 8th, 2011 at 7:21 am
Why is Nnamdi, our best defensive player, gone? Because for the past few years he has subtly and diplomatically criticized the AD scheme through the media. He wanted to come back but was not even offered a contract. Instead we over paid for Routt and Wimbley, two decent players but a long ways from being the best at their position. And we have Huff as the first nickel back — a cheap TD waiting to happen. Thank you AD for your ongoing commitment to excellence.
October 8th, 2011 at 7:26 am
What is up with the RAIDER web site? Are they saying Al Davis has passed away?
October 8th, 2011 at 7:26 am
Why am I pissed? Because Coach Hand Job’s offense is damn explosive and is only going to get better. He even has Jason Campbell playing like a real QB. With a decent defense (last year’s D?) we’d be legitimate contenders. Instead, we’re going to have to score 30+ point to beat average teams. It’s maddening to think Nnamdi wanted to come back and we didn’t even offer him a contract. Instead we brought back the worst D coordinator we’ve had maybe ever and are sliding Huff to nickel back on passing downs. If you told me at the end of last season things would play out like this I would have said, no way, AD’s not that far gone.
October 8th, 2011 at 7:27 am
I’ve asked this question many many times
WTF was wrong with John Marshall?
Besides he couldn’t stop the run. Nobody has in
a long time.
October 8th, 2011 at 7:30 am
No offense intended to Coach HJ. I’m a fan. I think he’s the best coach we’ve had since Gruden and if given a chance might prove to be better. Unless AD lets go of his stranglehold on the defense, though, I’m afraid this whole thing might not have a happy ending.
October 8th, 2011 at 7:32 am
Has no one been to the RAIDER website this morning?
What is going on?
October 8th, 2011 at 7:35 am
Looks that way. Unless Raiders.com has been hacked, Al Davis has died. He was a great football man and contributor to the game. It’s too bad he tarnished his legacy the past ten years. At least now we’ll be able to run a modern NFL defense. Raider Nation!

RIP Mr. Davis.
Thanks for the memories, and for shaping a young man’s life.
That may sound a little strange, but I grew up in a troubled household. The Raiders (and Mr. Davis) projected an image of success and tolerance that wasn’t present in my upbringing. From the inclusiveness of the organization to the attitude that “we don’t care what you do in your off-time, or how you express yourself as long as you show up on game day and kick ass”, it had an impact on my childhood. The team represented the toughness and grittiness of the city of Oakland (my hometown), and it was Mr. Davis that brought that to my team and my city.
Say what you will about the past few years. Al never stopped caring, or giving his all for his team. May God bless him and his family.
