Shaughnessy, Johnson and Gordon out; Reece questionable

Coach Hue Jackson said Friday before boarding a bus to the airport that defensive end Matt Shaughnessy, cornerback Chris Johnson and tight end Richard Gordon will not play Sunday against the Houston Texans.
Fullback Marcel Reece (ankle) is questionable, which passes as a mild surprise, given he has not practiced all week.
Manase Tonga said he received all the reps in practice Friday and that he is traveling with the team to Houston, while the seven other practice squad players remain behind.
That’s a sign that Jackson is contemplating signing Tonga from the practice squad at some point before the game if he feels as if Reece can’t play.
Rock Cartwright and Michael Bush are other options to replace Reece and Gordon, who filled in for Reece last week against the New England Patriots.
Also, Jackson confirmed that the Raiders worked out veteran defensive lineman Trevor Pryce on Thursday, but the Raiders did not sign Pryce.
Jackson isn’t ruling out signing Pryce at a later date. For now, the Raiders are going to rely upon Trevor Scott and Jarvis Moss to pick up the slack in Shaughnessy’s absence.
I shall post more later. Filling in for beat writer Jerry McDonald today, as he writes his advance for Sunday’s game and packs for the trip to Houston.

This seems like an unusual amount of injuries this season. I dont recall a season recently where there were this many injuries. We honestly have not even seen our “real” team yet. When we do, I expect it to be a monster.

I’ve seen a lot of effort on his part. Think his role is still primarily as a pass rusher, but the Raiders will have to better collectively against the run, particularly in Matt’s absence.

This team has been b’sn with the run defense for so long…its become a GLARING weakness that even the Raiders themselves now understand.

This is probably the main reason they want to give Reece every chance to possibly play. Who you gonna cut? All our players have value…except our DB’s. And we need all the DB’s we can get with our injuries!

To me, so far Lamarr Houston has been a disappoint this first quarter of the season.
I was hoping he would turn into a fringe Pro Bowler player.
Now he seems like Bobby Hamilton. Decent against the run, and nada in the pass-rushing department.

To me, I haven’t seen him chase down any QB’s, or trailing on any screens, making any plays from behind to warrant a “high motor guy”. No big 4th quarter, late in the game plays when everyones tanks are getting empty.
He celebrates 2 yard tackles better than anyone since Tom Howard. He does do well in goalline situations, and short yardage situations.
Again, Bobby Hamilton 2.0, just with more of a penchant to do something stupid and get a 15 yard flag.

All Dline guys are supposed to rush the passer. With Henderson he is going to get NO push. NONE. So, basically Q’s can just stand there in the pocket, concentrate on chipping the ends and pick apart So-longo and the young secondary. You could put Henderson in the middle and Seymour on the end from here to Sunday and in the end we are screwed because Houston is going to play the same kind of zone blocking game that everyone else uses against us.

Zone blocking to perfection on offense. Schaub has a quick release. Arian Foster is a beast. Missing the second best WR in the league right now though. Can stack the box against Foster & hope Routt/Chekwa can run with their 2nd/3rd guys.
Defense switched to the 3-4 this year. Remarkably smooth transition. Mario Williams, Antonio Smith and JJ Watt are nightmares. Secondary can be thrown on still; missing a starting CB

Excellent excellent break down! Schaub might be one of the most over looked Q’s in the league. The last few years he is always at the top in passing stats. At the time they needed to make a decision My dad thought Atlanta should have kept Schaub and got rid of Vick. In hindsight they probably should have. Schaub is that good. So you have a very potent passing attack, and last years number one rusher. And I did say number one rusher. So, how are they not a playoff team?
Easy. Their defense has been more than suspect. Especially the pass defense. Well, that’s now all changed. They got rid of the defensive staff and brought in Wade Phillips. Yeah, that Wade Phillips. Now, I know what you guys are thinking: Wade Phillips is just a buff, good looking, educated version of Jamista Brown with good teeth. Phillips might be a downer as far as a head coach goes, but he has always been a very good DC. And as S&BPA has pointed out, he made a very seamless transition from an even to an odd defense.

On the plus side, we’ve got some fuk’n dynamite on offense.
I really like that little guy Ford and now we have Moore to complement him.
The OL is average but working well together.
The real big question there is the quarterback who manages it well when everything is going good but has a release that is just fuk’n slow.

Uh, yes and yes. How does that make you a winner. Or are you saying it isn’t a passing league? It’s a passing league and we still get gashed on the run. I broke this down a few days ago. You guys blame our DT’s for everything which is ridiculous. Our defense is designed to have the Dline tie up guys and the LB’s to come and clean up. What happens is the LB’s don’t clean up and RB’s bust into the 3rd level. Which means it is going to be a big play. A very big play.

They were comparing Brees to Campbell and noted that taller QBs take longer to get the ball out of their hands because, well, they have more arm. Don’t believe difference was a full second either and I don’t think it takes 3 seconds to throw a ball.

Owen Daniels has had some wind knocked out of his sails after tearing up a knee. Schaub is just deadly back there tho. We might want to limit the blizting on him and make him earn his yardage. Their Oline is a solid unit. This is one game where our Dline is going to have to beat their Oline without additional blitzing help.

If Mike Huff can come back and play well, that would help. I think we are going to be OK at RC and Tyvon has played better than most in here think. Our perennial problem seems to be at MLB. I think opponents have seen something in So-longo Mc Lame’s game, that they trick him into covering the wrong gap. Then you see a 230 pounder with a head of steam heading for the safeties. Which is never good.

Houston needs to back to the DT rotation and Bryant should be playing base DE.
Moss and ShoNasty have RDE taken care of for a while and they look pretty damn good.

Well, I sat there and watched him clock it. I believe it was 3.5 for Brady on that particular pass and 4.7 for Campbell on a similar pass.
The knocks against Campbell have always been that he takes too long to read a defense and has a slow release.
He has improved his speed on reading a defense this year but not his release.
