Former Raiders coach Lane Kiffin on Davis’ passing
By Steve Corkran
Saturday, October 8th, 2011 at 1:20 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Raiders managing general partner Al Davis hired Lane Kiffin in 2007 to coach the Raiders. Davis fired Kiffin four games into the 2008 season “for cause.”
The Raiders and Kiffin were part of a grievance over unpaid salary to Kiffin, who had two more years left on his contract.
Kiffin spent most of his Raiders career taking jabs at Davis for his handling of personnel moves, overseeing the defense and other things. He kept up the rhetoric once he bolted for Tennessee, first, and then Southern Cal.
Kiffin issued the following statement to the Los Angeles Times about Davis’ passing:
“I was very saddened this morning to learn of the passing of Al Davis,” Kiffin said in a statement. “He was an iconic figure in the history of professional football and built a truly legendary franchise with the Raiders.
“I consider myself fortunate to have known him and to have been a part of that Raiders history. Even though our relationship did not end the way I would have liked, I have nothing but the greatest respect for Mr. Davis and I truly appreciate the opportunity he afforded me and so many young coaches, players and staff. My thoughts go out to his family and to the family and fans of the Raiders past and present.”

Never got the opportunity to party serious with Uncle Al on the Reggae Party Cruise, but still pissed we couldn’t bring home the Lombardi for him in 2002.
Can’t forget watching him hobble off that plane in San Diego and thinking it would probably be his last shot. Then Gannon laid an egg and Callahan got smacked around by Gruden. He deserved better.
Here’s hoping the KrappyKells and Madden Retards of the world continue to choke on those 3 Lombardis still sitting in his office.
And on each of the many more to come.

Al the GM could frustrate me. Al the pioneer, maverick, brilliant, intelligent, visionary was an idol to the way I live my life. I do it my way and don’t give a fk if it’s not conventional or the way other sheeple think. God bless you Al and thank you for doing it your way. Truly an inspiration. I bleed silver and black.

LMN is more concerned with how people talk about his coach than how his coach treated the now deceased owner of his “favorite team”…..speechless

Sorry, I was just trying to lighten things up. I did the same thing last year when Blanda died last year, the day after Jano missed that FG against AZ. I understand this isn’t the time, so I sincerely apologize. I been on this blog for awhile and never want to offend
To anyone who is really saddened, I didn’t mean to piss on

Al Davis went to his death believing The Immaculate Reception in Pittsburgh 40 years ago was a bad officiating call.

That take-no-guff approach also typified Davis’ style away from the game. In 1995, a newspaper reporter in his first season on the Raider beat struck up a conversation with him about growing up in Brooklyn, N.Y., where they both were raised.
“How do you adjust to the laid-back California lifestyle?” the reporter asked.
“Adjust?” Davis said as if sickened by the thought. “You don’t adjust. You dominate.”

#10 Al Davis was a former Chargers receiving coach. It says something that Lance Alworth picked Al to introduce him at the Hall of Fame.

Stop whining, Memo. We heard you the first time.
Al may be gone, but if he’s up there watching, trust me – he still can’t stand whimpering blog geeks.
If happen to have a pair, try to sack it up.

Hue not only being a good coach and motivator is also reaching out to the city of Oakland. I am happy to have him as our HC as opposed to Cable. Al left a lot of good pieces in place for the team to win. When I heard the news I blurted out “oh my God.”

Gents,
I just emailed Raiders.com asking for them to list an Al Davis jumpsuit on their site. We should all do an Al Davis jumpsuit in honor of the man. Had my issues with him but very sad to see him pass on. At least, he enjoyed a Jets win. So long to the Godfather of the NFL.

A MAN’S MAN
Most of us could only wish to be half the man that Al Davis was.
He took care of his players…PAST,PRESENT and FUTURE Raiders.Marcus Allen even gave the man his props along with Kiffin.THAT’S RESPECT!!
We are so blessed to have Amy Trask as next in line and Hue Jackson as the coach right now.Everything happens for a reason.
To the NFL NETWORK,It had to take Al’s passing for you to give our team some coverage? Some airing of one our great games?
ONE LOVE TO THE RAIDER NATION!!! There will never, ever be none quite like you!:-(
Thanks Al for the memories!!!!

Very, very sad. Like losing a member of the family. Every family has a crazy uncle that is eccentric and sometimes exasperates you but you love and respect him anyway. That is how I felt about Al Davis. I have been a Raider fan since the AFL days back in the 60’s. I have never known this team without Al Davis being associated with it in one capacity or another. This is really tough to take right now. Hope the team can pull it together and “just win baby” in his honor.
