Statement from Raiders on Al Davis’ passing

By Steve Corkran
Saturday, October 8th, 2011 at 11:08 am in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders released a statement on the passing of managing general partner Al Davis, who was 82 at the time of his death.

“The Oakland Raiders are deeply saddened by the passing of Al Davis.

Al Davis was unique – a maverick, a giant among giants, a true legend among legends, the brightest star among stars, a hero, a mentor, a friend.

Al Davis was the only person in professional football history to have been a scout, assistant coach, head coach, general manager, commissioner and owner.

He was an innovator, a pioneer with a deep love and passion for the game of football. His contributions to the game are innumerable and his legacy will endure forever through generations of players, coaches, administrators and fans.

Al Davis was a champion of diversity who maintained the courage of his convictions. His passion for the game we all love is best exemplified by his famous phrase, “COMMITMENT TO EXCELLENCE.”
The fire that burns brightest in the Raider organization, “THE WILL TO WIN,” will continue to blaze through the legacy of the great Al Davis.”

Al Davis & Steve Jobs – BOTH giants within heir own spheres of influence. Both impacting millions of people worldwide. Both one of a kind. Both will be missed leaving voids that are without measure.

Al Davis put Oakland on the map. He was as much Mr. Oakland as he was Mr. Raider. His legacy will continue on into perpetuity. The Raiders will always reflect the values establish by Al Davis. the Raiders ARE Al Davis.

    RIP Al Davis.

What is also remarkable is that he died on the holiest day of his religion, Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. RIP Mr. Davis. You lived life to its fullest.

Very sad day for Raider Nation. A true patriot that helped build the NFL to what it is today. A pioneer that would do anything to help his players win. The Raiders will never be the same without him and only time will tell if they will ever again live up to his legacy.

Truly, the end of an era.

The man was maddening to some, revered by more, but respected by all with an inkling of what his accomplishments meant to the NFL as we know it today.

I did not expect to be affected as deeply as I am. I will mourn his passing, but I will remember his vision for the return to greatness. The time is now.

That sounds so weird since Al was the Oakland Raiders.

I’ve been a critic of Al Davis, but I feel like I’ve lost a family member. I am truly shocked and saddened.

Got a raider tat on my calf about a yr ago. Its a shield but done with my own personal touch. It wasnt finished cause all the way cause i was trying to figure out the wording for it. Its been a struggle seriously. But now i will have the wording RIP AL DAVIS. I think that would be perfect. Thanks davis and the raider organization for giving us raider nation fans an escape from the every day grind from are normal lives. The raiders gave us a place to go and relax and for three hours on sunday forget about everything else.

good day nation. Will be back later to salute.

  • 30 year raider

i have been a raider since 1979, and today is one of the saddest days i can remember.. AL DAVIS was a true football man. a patriarch to why the game is what it is today! a amn that changed football. AL said forget this 3 yards and a cloud of dust BS, i wanna go uptop with some speed!! i wanna throw over the secondary!! i wanna throw THE BOMB!!! this was a man who was way ahead of his time!! a LEGEND HAS PAST!! HE DESERVES OUR RESPECT AND GRATITUDE!! IM IN TEARS WRITING THIS!! I HOPE OUR FIRST PLAY FROM SCRIMMAGE TOMORROW IS A BOMB TO DENARIUS MOORE!! THANK YOU AL DAVIS FOR BEING A GREAT RAIDER!! YOU WILL BE MISSED!! RIP….

  • Just Fire Baby

Jamarcus Russell should be court ordered to pay for all funeral costs and expenses.

I truely believe Jamarcus shaved a couple of years off Al’s life, and those years could have been used to watch some playoff victories the next few years.

    F U again Jamarcus Russell!!!!

  • Method To My Madness

I cant stop the tears yall……Al helped shaped my personality…I’ve been an underdog my whole life and my city my area code my team has been frowned upon. They label us dumb out of control nggers, wetbacks and poor white trash at Raider nation. In college I wrote the best paper ever about how Al Davis influenced my life

At a time in my life when I wasnt around my father and his family I had the Raiders as my outlet. Since I was a little boy I followed everything with this team. It was the only thing I could talk with my father for a while cuz that was our connection. AL HAS MEANT SO MUCH TO ME. I’m beyond crushed yall.

Al was my fking HERO. He is just like me stubborn and gracious all at the same time. Always wanting to beat the odds and win in life

Pride and Poise wasnt talking about football. The Will to win wasnt talking about football. Just Win baby wasnt talking about football

    IT WAS LIFE

I am an underdog and I’m from Oakland and I’m fking proud!

I’m gonna cry from start to finsish tomorrow during the game and will be an emotional wreck next week vs Cleveland

I love all you Raider brothers no matter where you from. I apologize for my austere nature. I just wanted to see us win again and Al hold up the trophy again. I just wanted to win cuz everyone calls us losers and I didnt wanna be labeled a loser anymore. Its gonna be hard to post on here anymore. My leader and my hero has left

Call you an Al Davis stooge, call me his bootlicker and Al defender…I loved what he stood for. He was his own man and he marched to a different drum. It not for Al I may have never moved back to the Bay Area in my teenage years. I love the guy to death and I’m crying while writing this….sorry for being so emotional guys. I love the Raiders more than anything outside of my family and you guys are my second family. I love yall and I hope we can rep hard tomorrow in a big win for al. My dude Raider Dell is in Texas and he is gonna bring that spirit to Houston and he will be the 12th man for our guys

CODE BLACK….Forever I love you Al…..thank you for being the maverick who wasnt apart of the in crowd. Lord knows you will be missed

  • http://raiders.com Albert Bigelow Paine

Well said Brien. We will all miss him.

  • ghostraiders

Method…… You’re a true Raider fan man. You have my respect brother…. no matter what!! That was some powerful stuff man… it will be OK man!! Lets keep his legacy alive. .. your words are very touching… hang in there brother.. were all feeling it right now!!

IT’S HARD TO DESCRIBE WHAT WAS GOING ON INSIDE,
THE SUN THAT WAS YOU, HAS LEFT ME TO DIE.
THE FIRE WE SHARED THAT BURNED HOT AND INTENSE, REFUSED TO LIGHT,
THE STARS WERE LEFT ALWAYS TO BE MY TEARS ON THE DARKEST NIGHT.
THE LAUGHTER FROM YOUR CHEER IS A DISTANT ECHO ON THESE OFF WHITE WALLS,
NO LONGER A SAFETY OR SOLACE IN TIMES WHEN I WOULD EMOTIONALLY FALL.

IT’S HARD TO DESCRIBE WHAT TERMINATION HAS ACHIEVED,
THE HOLE THAT IS LEFT INSIDE CAN NEVER BE APPEASED.
THE PAIN WAS SO STRANGE IT HUNG HEAVY LIKE A WEIGHT,
IT PULLS, NOW, ON MY HEART AS IF I AM ABOUT TO SUFFOCATE.

IT’S HARD TO DESCRIBE HOW A LOVE THAT IS SO LONG IGNORED, CAN EVENTUALLY TAKE ITS TOLL,
EVEN UNDOUBTEDLY, CRIPPLING AND DESTROYING THE STRONGEST OF SOULS.
WE FACED LIFE TOGETHER EVERY DAY OF THE YEAR,
THE SADNESS OF LOST MEMORIES BRINGS NOTHING BUT LONELINESS AND TEARS.

IT’S HARD TO DESCRIBE IN HOPING THAT THERE IS NO TOMORROW,
FOR ALL I HAVE NOW IS TO SWIM IN AN OCEAN OF SORROW.
MAY YOUR MINDS EYE RECOLLECT WITH VIVID COLOR AND A BEAUTY AND WARMTH IN YOUR HEART,
GOODBYE MR. DAVIS, WE WILL BE FOREVER APART.
PLEASE REMEMBER RAIDER FANS HOW HE TOUCHED YOUR LIFE,
GLORY, SUCCESS, ADMIRATION AND SOMETIMES STRIFE.
HOPEFULLY THE POOLS THAT CASCADE DOWN OUR FACES IN SALTED STREAMS,
WILL BE EXTINGUISHED BY HOPE, HAPPINESS AND THE REALIZATION OF AL’S DREAMS…..REST IN PEACE….LOVE 77….

There have been times when AD seemed like he was the crazy old grandpa of the Raider organization but he was still our grandpa. Every team has it’s passionate fans, but AD made it us against the world. I will always cherish that. I’m glad he got to see the things reach a turning point in the right direction.
    RIP Mr. Davis
