Bill Soliday on Al Davis
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, October 10th, 2011 at 8:58 pm in Oakland Raiders.
With all that has been written about Al Davis the last few days, maybe you missed this one.
Here’s a link to a remembrance on Patch.com by Bill Soliday, who dealt with Davis dating back to 1965 starting with the Fremont News-Register through the Hayward Daily Review through the Oakland Tribune/Bay Area News Group etc., etc. etc.
A terrific story, and if you’re ever lucky enough to run into Bill, it only scratches the surface of what he knows about the Raiders.
A unique totally local perspective. Check it out.

You might not believe this but I had that same conversation with Mr Davis outside the lockeroom in the Port of Oakland as he was starting to leave the facility. I asked him was there anyway that the Raiders could stay? I was scared what he would say but he just stopped and stood there and looked at directly at me and said something to the affect that he wish there was but it was now too late. And then added you keep rooting for us or soemthing like that and got inte back of a powder blue Cadillac and left.
While I was extremely hurt by it I thought how cool it was that he would actually stop and explain to me that he had to leave eventhough he wanted to stay. But that was Mr Davis. I hated it because I spent a lot of time at that facility watching practice in a tree on the side of the practice field. And would often hide in the lockerroom after practice when he would come in I would hide in the phone room where I knew he wouldn’t go. Loved talking to the players after. It’s where I first met Marcus Allen and Howie Long.

Excerpt from the Bill Soliday interview-
“When he took the Raiders away to Los Angeles, I remember standing outside a courtroom in Monterey during a break in the eminent domain case, telling him how I fervently believed he was doing the wrong thing.
He was taking a rare beacon of light from a city that needed light and a passion to fight back so much. He was taking the hearts of thousands of Oakland kids who were looking for something to believe in, something to identify with and he was putting it in a city 400 miles to the south that did not deserve this blue collar team…
Al Davis stood there and explained, in essence, that it couldn’t be helped. He had been double-crossed by the politicians. He could not back down. He, of all people, could not back down.
And yet, there was a sad look on his face — one of the rare times I saw that look — knowing that what I had said had a ring of truth to it”.
______________________________________________________
I hope this helps cement what people like me and Brien, and Priest, and several others have been saying about the impact that moving the Raiders to LA had on the fan base here.
Bear with me as I go on a journey with you back into time and speak for thousands of my fellow Oakland/East Bay natives.
Soliday’s exact words were that it was
“taking the hearts of thousands of Oakland kids who were looking for something to believe in.”
Well guess who many of those thousands of kids are now rooting for? You guessed it, The 49ers. Because they were the only Bay Area team during the development of most of those kids who are now grown adults with families. Furthermore the 49ers were winning Championships during those years.
So these kids that were looking for “something to believe in” started rooting for the next best thing in their eyes…the 49ers.
When the Raiders returned, there were many people who looked at it like an estranged father who finally comes home after walking out on his family.
There was anger, suspicion, mistrust, and fear. Fear of being left again!
Yes, when we were winning at the turn of the millennium there were sold out stadiums and merchandise was selling. But many of THOSE were the BANDWAGON fans. The Front runners. The ones who just became fans of the Raiders because it seemed cool. But they had know clue of what the Raiders were all about.
But the original Raider Nation, the faithful, have ALWAYS been here. And now there is a NEW generation of children who were old enough to remember the Raiders when they returned in 1995. But they had to learn about the Raiders, the tradition, and what they meant to the city of Oakland and the East Bay all over again!
That was 16 years ago and now THEY are the FUTURE of the Raider Nation.
Like I said a couple of threads ago…The biggest mistake Al Davis made was leaving Oakland and moving to Los Angeles in the first place.
This article just cemented that even further.
October 10th, 2011 at 9:50 pm
Maybe some of you guys know each other with the jokes and teasing. I just know that I have stood by this team through thick and thin for 40 years, and I learned something from Al Davis. I want to win when I compete. I hate to lose. The only thing that matters in professional sports is winning. I believe things happen for a reason. Yes, it’s sad that Al passed away. He finally put together a respectable team after 8 long years, and won’t be here to see it played out. I know one thing though: I will root my heart out every game in Oakland and I hope all true Raider fans show up and make the Oakland Coliseum the home field advantage it used to be in the good old days: a place where the opponent didn’t enjoy to come, a place that was truly something magical, where the Raiders won almost every game. It’s also time to let Mark Davis know that the Bay Area is where the Raiders belong, and we need to fill that stadium to show him where the Raiders belong!
October 10th, 2011 at 9:54 pm
Would be nice if they updated the stadium and made it a little more fun to be there.
Not good when a home TV has higher quality than your stadium’s “jumbotron”.
October 10th, 2011 at 10:03 pm
Residents of Oakland, if you want the Raiders to remain, you are going to need to vote out your city council & mayor.
You are going to have to vote in quite a few more members that will not oppress your businessmen and businesswomen in the community from the thousanaires to the billionares.
October 10th, 2011 at 10:03 pm

Here is some simple logic for you. How many Superbowls have the Raiders won? Answer 3
How many Superbowls have the Raiders appeared in? Answer 5
Now how many times did that happen in LA as opposed to Oakland.
How many division titles have the Raiders won in Oakland as opposed to LA?
How about AFC Championships?
When you finally figure out the answers to that, please mute yourself for at least 48 hours. You obviously have no clue whatsoever, what you are talking about.

You are obviously very young. In the late 60’s, 70’s & 80’s they were GOLD. The early Raider teams were the absolute BEST! The game was never over until the whistle blew. You always knew we were going to win, somehow in some cases. The Raiders And Oakland are of the same coin – two sides. The Raiders belong in Oakland and nowhere else.

Al Davis is synonymous with Oakland Raiders. Los Angeles was a temporary home. I was at the Los Angeles Coliseum in 1983. That was no home crowd watching a soon to be Super Bowl Champion. Los Angeles has very few true Raider fans.

Al Davis was a master strategist. Anyone thinking or assuming he didn’t have the future already mapped out didn’t understand Coach Al Davis. I’m sure the tax situation was addressed long ago and I’m also convinced that the new GM was already named by AD in the “Futures” plan. I would be surprised to find out that he probably has the next 4 years projections for the draft already laid out too. Go to the bank that the “Futures” plan was completed long ago and all that is required now is execution. I also believe that he hand picked and nurtured Hue Jackson because he knew the end was coming & he wanted the right guy in the right place. Coach Al Davis didn’t leave things up to chance. You should already know that.
October 10th, 2011 at 10:35 pm
I do remember Los Angeles bringing in 90,000 plus to some Raider games. As a kid looking at the Coliseum, that was impressive. Raiders/Niners 1991.
The Davis’ will do whatever’s best for them, be it Oakland or NorCal or So.Cal. So long as they’re on tv, 75% of their fan base will be happy.
I hope it’s somewhere new in Northern Cali. Change the scenery a bit, reinvigorate the experience, make it better for families.

GOOD! This will be a memorable event – a true one of a kind. Sold out houses like this remind me of the old days back in the 60’s & 70’s. armond, you can respect history all you want. How does that change the FACT that the Raiders have been in talks with sharing a stadium with the 49ers in Santa Clara.
The facts are a stadium in Oakland simply isn’t as lucrative as one elsewhere, so business people and the NFL will likely not help out unless the new stadium is elsewhere.
Simple really.
October 10th, 2011 at 11:10 pm
I bet against the Raiders vs the Bills, Patriots, and Texans. Almost swept.
It’s ok to be rational and yet enjoy the Raiders.
October 10th, 2011 at 11:15 pm
Last time Oakland’s city council decided to be business friendly, all of the companies operating at the port left town, leaving Oakland with scarce employment opportunities for its citizens. Do everything you can to appease businesses, they’ll still screw you. Government might as well stick up for the people.
October 10th, 2011 at 11:17 pm
Everything that’s “simple” somehow turns out not to be so.
Which businesses are backing the Raiders’ move to Santa Clara? How solvent are they? Who’s to say they don’t go belly up in a few years? Who’s to say San Jose’s job market doesn’t go to schit? Who’s to say San Jose isn’t as bad as Oakland in a decade?
October 10th, 2011 at 11:18 pm
those cities be worse in time, but right now, the people with the $$ are in cities other than Oakland. So the pull is away from Oakland.
October 10th, 2011 at 11:19 pm
NCAA banned any kind of TD celebrations whatsoever. Seemed “simple”. Then suddenly, a punter gets a TD on a fake negated for putting his arm in the air while running to the end zone. I guess the rulemakers, with their simple idea that “made sense”, never envisioned this. Keep an open mind.

And right now, the money is outside of Oakland, not within it. And teams need money.

“movers and shakers”. lol. Really? In the age of the bailout?
October 10th, 2011 at 11:27 pm
selfishly, I’d like them to stay in Northern California. Makes a great trip. Need to improve the stadium experience though.
October 10th, 2011 at 11:27 pm
Alex, whatever “movers and shakers” there are in free trade today, they’re not in America.
October 10th, 2011 at 11:28 pm
come on Sully. Bailout or not, those billionaires remained billionaires through it all. In fact, most of those top CEOs have received raises in the last 5 years. You know this.
October 10th, 2011 at 11:29 pm
The first time you see a bad incident in Santa Clara, you’ll want to move the team again.
October 10th, 2011 at 11:31 pm
You can move it to Oklahoma. Nice, wholesome family environment. What’s that? Somebody blew up the stadium while 60k people were in it, because the Raiders donated to a political candidate who’s pro choice? Darn. Makes Oakland seem relatively safe.
October 10th, 2011 at 11:32 pm
I just want the surrounding area to be more worthy of family $ spent there. Oakland certainly isn’t. In and Out is the main attraction there right now
Teams know they need family $. It isn’t the drunk, single, college-aged kid that’s important to the bottom-line. Just hard to picture the new stadium being there in Oakland.
October 10th, 2011 at 11:35 pm
you rightfully blast Amy Trask and whoever else is part of the problem of a world-wide-recognized team like the Raiders being bottom-10 in profit.
One logical fix proven by other owners is a better stadium in a better location.
October 10th, 2011 at 11:39 pm
Damn Alex you are really slinging the sh!t like an ape with rabes. WTF is your b!tch problem this evening? Why such a douche bag?

priest are u goin to the game this weekend? i havent been so exhausted after a win like i was sunday. cant imagine what this sunday will be like. btw i see u defending jc on these deep throws but he has to get better. that 1rst pass to chaz was just unacceptable. wide open with no pressure equals td. people say dhb cant get deep but thats false. he’s had db’s beat in every game but jc cant get it to him. dhb would have way better stats if it wasnt for jc. he is holding the offense back. he has missed way too many of those money plays man.
October 10th, 2011 at 11:43 pm
umm, no, jacksonville did not build a better stadium in a better place for an already-existing team.
comparing the Raiders to an expansion team? Go to bed
October 10th, 2011 at 11:44 pm
Ha ha ha. Of course Drexl brings up the one team worse than the Raiders financially.

October 10th, 2011 at 11:45 pm
JC is a 7-year NFL veteran.
He is who he is. Raiders best chance of winning playoff games is running the ball and improving their zone D.
October 10th, 2011 at 11:46 pm
Actually, Alex, the college age frat guy is becoming the target market for sports teams. The money they’re willing to spend on alcohol is surpassing what families would spend. And the stadiums are jacking up alcohol prices to gouge them and their parents credit cards. That’s one of the reasons why there’s so many fights at games today.
October 10th, 2011 at 11:47 pm
sullivan,
were you and I ever big pricks all these years while the Raiders were down?
Odd how ugly these dudes spew. Like we were doing something other than spitting truth the last 5 years.
October 10th, 2011 at 11:47 pm
Any hope of reprinting the Dave Newhouse article from 2009 on Carole Davis?
October 10th, 2011 at 11:47 pm
Would it be a stretch for me to say that at least 90% of fights at NFL games have alcohol somehow involved?
October 10th, 2011 at 11:49 pm
lol, hadn’t seen it from that angle.
I like sitting near the 50 where the people who pay good $ sit at. Civil.
One time I sat up in the 300 area. Lady a few chairs away had the guy behind her throw up on her. Learned my lesson.
October 10th, 2011 at 11:50 pm
All of the radio hosts after the Niners/Raiders slug fest, blaming the “thug culture”. I’d say about 10% of brawls at NFL games involve some type of gang or drug dispute, of course, most of that 10% being at Niner/Raider games. Nonetheless, it’s rare. But alcohol is involved in just about every one of them. Can’t blame alcohol, though. I guess businesses are powerful, Alex.
October 10th, 2011 at 11:51 pm
Well, some people don’t know how to act when they drink. Probably the same internet “tough guys” in here.
October 10th, 2011 at 11:51 pm
Alex, notice how defensive they are of Trask. We could be getting warm.
October 10th, 2011 at 11:52 pm
Armond trust me it’s not a defense it’s just what I see, no doubt he needs to get better the outabounds throws piss me off. But throwing deep is not easy and we have young WR’s also they have been hurt from one to the other which doesn’t allow a lot of time for reps. Trust me he will start hitting some of those he’s barely missing them now. Just afew adjustments and you’ll see that stuff start to pop.
I know you’re not much of a JC fan and Sunday he had me very upset but when I calmed down he was barely missing which tells he is trying to gage them and it takes time and reps. There is no shortcut they have to miss some to start hitting some. It’s early just wait you’ll see this take off…
October 10th, 2011 at 11:53 pm
Alex, that huge brawl at the Niner/Raider game took place in the good seats.
October 10th, 2011 at 11:53 pm
Was that Chris Rock that mentioned alcohol is legal because it’s owned by white people, while weed is illegal because it’s not owned by them?
why’d you get in that fight? why’d you end up pregnant? why did you rape her? why did you punch her? why did you wake up there?
alcohol, #1 drug in the world.
October 10th, 2011 at 11:55 pm

Nope. I got mine free.
October 10th, 2011 at 11:57 pm
tj,
why isn’t it early for Cam Newton and Steve Smith? Or Stafford and Calvin? Didn’t take Vick long in Philly. They’ve all played together as long or less time than JC and DHB have.
October 10th, 2011 at 11:59 pm
Yeah. Campbell’s 7th year in the league.
“Give him time”.
Ha ha. My goodness.
October 11th, 2011 at 12:00 am
Dalton and AJ Green aren’t struggling to hit it deep.
Is DHB or Chaz really THAT much faster or different than the receivers JC has had for 7 years now? Dang adjustments!
October 11th, 2011 at 12:01 am
Campbell: “Coach, I can’t hit these guys in stride! These receivers are just…odd! They run funny! Santana Moss did the same thing in Washington! It’s their fault!”
October 11th, 2011 at 12:02 am
Oh man! Terrelle Pryor is in the mix come wednesday……Yeah!
October 11th, 2011 at 12:04 am
I never aired this out earlier tonight.
How terrible was Lovie Smith’s end-of-the-game clock management?!?!
You’re down 11, and never even try a FG with time running out in the 4th? You just keep trying for a TD as time runs out?
What the heck is wrong with some of these coaches??
FG with about 20 seconds, try the onside. It’s not that difficult.
October 11th, 2011 at 12:06 am
priesttj better be excited for Pryor. Already told us he’s as good as Cam Newton.
No, really, he was serious.
Average to Bad passer in Big 10 is equivalent to record-breaking passer in SEC.

I don’t know, I’m torn between LA and Oakland. Oakland seemed like a Raidertopia when I first went there to watch a game. The tailgating was off the hook compared to LA. The LA coliseum was a dump, big track between the stands and the field and then that little bleacher on the east side of the field. Bushleague. In Oakland the stands are at least closer to the field.
But its still embarassing when teams like seattle are getting new stadiums and the Radiers have dirt infield always a worry about missed FGs and injuries. I also remember monday night game against Denver one year and there were not even enough lights for the game it looked dark there.
In the LA coliseum because it was soo big there times when it looked empty with 60,000 people there. During the sellouts it was amazing and a zoo, strippers coming in, fans going at it w/ each other, opposing fans, cops.
I don’t know, a new stadium with about 70,000 seats would be perfect. Just new facilities would draw in families and new fans. In LA it would be great but I just can’t picture all the Raider fans, around all that fancy stuff they have there at LA live, it seems too Fu-Fu for the hardore Raider fans.
In Oakland a new stadium would be tight too. It would give me more of a reason to hang out in Bay area more often, but where are the investors? La seems to be drawing them like flies. To me the Raiders are one of Oakland’s major attractions but they don’t got investors or help from the local govt. which would benefit IMO from the development of the community, but again we’re in a State/city budget crisis and you can’t squeeze blood from a rock.

Dr. Amit Goswami, and his theories on Quantum Activism.
Yet he is still here.
I encourage you to listen closely as Alex7 educates us on the DEEPER things in life. Let us no longer waste our time discussing Raider tradition and the future of this silly game called Football. It is simply just some guys running around in tights.
Please let us stop our foolish banter and listen deeply to Alex 7 espouse his philosophical wisdom as he engages in deep conversation with his more intellectual friends…

uh, yeah ur losers. u post 2/3 of the posts between the 2 of u and i post my first of the nite moments ago. see. i am actually a raiders fan and yet i have a life to live. u need to find a hobby. dungeons and dragons or a LARP group might accept a loser like u. i can just imagine u in a D&D discussion group. “dragons suck. they’re not even cool anymore. maybe they were a long time ago, but we would be so much better off w/o dragons. ur warrior isn’t that good. neither is urs. this group doesn’t like me speaking the truth. i predict our group dies perilously on our next adventure. our leader doesn’t know what he’s doing. he keeps meddling.” on 2nd thought, u were probably already kicked out of those groups. unfortunately, we can’t keep u out of here even though we all would love it if u disappeared forever.
u were never like very much in high school, huh? maybe u should stop blaming others and realize that it’s ur personality. no one likes a dick.

oooh, dungeons and dragons joke! How 2003ish!
You are actually a Raider “fan” and have mostly negative things to say about people that are different than you.
I see where people get the sense that Raider fans aren’t the most enlightened beings.
If you’re going to make fun of people, since you get so much pleasure out of it, at least be original. Oooh, high school nerd joke. Ooooh, blaming others (? who’s blaming who for what??) Ooooh, name-calling.
zzzzz.

October 11th, 2011 at 1:19 am

why? why would you waste your time on an idiot who hates the Raiders spending all his time on a raider fan board? And calling him names?
Why do you have nothing better to do? Sad.
October 11th, 2011 at 1:21 am
since ur not a raider worshiper, y r u here? simple question. y would someone who hates the team spend so much of their free time trying to be a dick on a raiders blog? seems pathetic. find something u like and spend time doing it. or is it that u like being a dick? which is sad.
October 11th, 2011 at 1:24 am
simple question? ok, I’ll answer.
Who says you have to be a Raider worshipper to be here?
Debate is fun, Rob. I enjoy typing here at night in between setting up teacher lesson plans and watching videos on Quantum Physics.
Debate is fun and good for your brain. Cussing and being a chat room “tough guy”…not so good for your brain. Why you choose the latter is a mystery.
October 11th, 2011 at 1:25 am
wow, ur one of those kids who repeats everything people say. “no i’m not. u are.”
yeah, they were always just about as annoying as u are.
i come to this board to talk to raiders fans. it’s a community board where fans can talk to each other. it’s fun, in moderation. guys like u and sullivan are pathetic losers who crave someone to talk to them, so u do nothing but talk sh*t about the team that everyone else here loves. ur basically someone who forces their way in here, and uses “freedom of speech” to be a total dick. seriously pathetic. no friends huh?
October 11th, 2011 at 1:26 am

Raiders are entertainment, robby. Entertainment. I’m entertained by them, through bad and good. I don’t live them. I don’t need their name on my handle. They aren’t a part of me, and I’m not a part of them. They’re men playing a game with a ball.
But again, debate is fun and good for your brain.

but y r u here? u don’t like the raiders. u don’t have any beliefs other than to try say things that irritate people. u hate the raiders. u hate al davis. u enjoy p*ssing people off. ur sole reason for being here is to “debate”? but that would imply u have a belief to espouse. debating isn’t just being against everyone no matter what. u don’t debate. u don’t speak truth. u just try to spread misery. u lead a sad existence.
quantum physics? doubt it. but it would mean i cam e very close to the truth about D&D. and being friendless. poor guy.
October 11th, 2011 at 1:34 am
group think? it’s a fan board moron! of course it’s group think, for the most part. that’s why we’re here. to be around others who are fans. and then jackazzes like u come here and attempt to irritate everyone. ur like some moron who thinks it debate to walk into a pottery club and tell everyone how pottery sucks. and u won’t leave. naturally, everyone hates u and wants u to leave. it’s not debate. it’s being a dick.
October 11th, 2011 at 1:34 am
Rob
I don’t spread misery. I point at the Raiders going 27 and 80 the last 8 years. There’s your misery. That’s miserable.
I debated that our GM undervalues the QB and D-Coordinator position, and that his man-to-man scheme was ridiculously easy to game plan against and run against.
The last 8 years proved me right.
That’s about it. Those were my main 3 points the last few years. Not sure why you care. But there you go.
October 11th, 2011 at 1:35 am
lol, “it’s group think! for the most part!”
well Rob, which one is it?
If it’s for the most part, it obviously leaves room for opposing views.
Settle down.
October 11th, 2011 at 1:36 am
It’s sad you don’t know the difference between group think and a board for one team.
October 11th, 2011 at 1:37 am
it’s why u have no friends, dude. seriously. i know u don’t. i don’t have to know u personally. i can just tell. and u’ve been an unhappy loner most of ur life. u don’t understand why. but i’m telling u why. but u could change it. u could make friends. but u blow ur opportunity by doing this sh*t. it’s ur defense mechanism. “they won’t like me anyway, so i’ll be a jerk. that will show them. and it will be my choice not to like them. ha!” that’s u.

I’m pro McFadden. Was happy when we drafted him, unlike Priesttj.
Was anti DHB, pro BJ Raji.
Anti Gallery, pro Fitzgerald.
Pro zone and 3-4, anti 90% man-to-man and 4-3.
Pro Hagan! There, now you know me and can spill whatever energy you continue to want to expend on me.

October 11th, 2011 at 1:59 am
of course, it’s easy to find guys in every draft that u would rather have. hindsight. and dhb is about breakout. it’s already started to happen.
the anti-al davis parade really started to take off for 3 reasons. we started losing. evreyone loves to jump on an anti-bandwagon against someone who has been successful and told everyone to fuk off. 2nd, he drafted jamarcus, dmc, and dhb in consecutive years. coming into last year, it appeared they would all be busts. then dmc emerged. now, right in front of all the smirking hyenas, dhb is arriving. turns out al knew what he was doing. and jamarcus had all the skills plus a drug habit. not al’s fault. 3rd, his age, which the press should be ripped to shreds for. everyone gets old. they were horribly guilty of ageism. criminally so.
gee–ur pro mcfadden, raji, and fitzgerald. what a reach. ever been pro-someone who wasn’t already a star?
pro hagan? because he’s caught some passes? i like the guy too, and i was happy when we signed him. but he’s not gonna be a star. a solid possession guy perhaps.
anyone else on the roster u like?

I wanted Fitz, Raji, and McFadden before the draft.
Was pro-Hagan right when they signed him. Needed a veteran with hands.
Have been telling priesttj that last year’s draft was overrated.
Everyone was so excited about McClain, Houston, and Ford.
Average, average, and average. Which is actually a very good Raiders draft, but not the “best-draft-ever” hoopla many fans were making it out to be. Veldheer the only star there.

And yes, come on now, it is Al’s fault for not knowing that Russell had drug issues.
Other team’s knew.
Also, after Kiffin interviewed Russell, he knew Russell was not a leader.
Al ignored this, fell in love with the arm.
Don’t give him a free pass on that blown #1 overall.
October 11th, 2011 at 2:09 am
lots of blown #1’s in history. it was jamarcus’ fault. everyone passed on brady. the draft is a crapshoot. hindsight is 20/20.
mcclain has mixed reviews. houston is good. ford isn’t a great wr but a great weapon. his rookie year, he did a lot to impress.
who else do u like on the roster?
October 11th, 2011 at 2:09 am
so al davis was brilliant for drafting veldheer?
October 11th, 2011 at 2:10 am
and dmc? and denarious?
October 11th, 2011 at 2:10 am
What was the last blown #1 besides Jamarcus the last 10 years?
October 11th, 2011 at 2:11 am
so ur going out on a limb and saying players who make it are good picks and players who don’t are bad?
wow. stunning observation.
and if u don’t like a 4-3 man defense, y not follow another team?
October 11th, 2011 at 2:12 am
it’s like dating a girl and u keep talking about how she’s not ur type. but then, i don’t think u can relate to girlfriend talk.
October 11th, 2011 at 2:14 am
You know the story of how Al decides who to draft.
Why did we end up with Derrick Gibson? Scouts wanted a different safety that ended up with the Colts. Al asked them who the biggest hitter was. Scouts said Gibson. Scouts said Gibson lacked instincts. Davis drafted Gibson.
Surely you’ve read that story. Al sometimes listens to scouts, sometimes he doesn’t. You know for a FACT Davis never went to watch Veldheer play.
October 11th, 2011 at 2:15 am
Al said he brought in a part-time GM two off-seasons ago to help out.
Since then our drafts improved.
If you want to call that a coincidence, make yourself happy.
October 11th, 2011 at 2:15 am
yeah, we do future-wife courting here, not girlfriend dating.
October 11th, 2011 at 2:18 am
let’s see. alex smith. david carr. courtney brown. tim couch. ki-jana carter. dan wilkinson. steve emtman. jeff george. aundray bruce. that’s 9 of the last 23. like i said. a crapshoot, even at the top.
October 11th, 2011 at 2:21 am
al said he was going to. he never said he did. liar. he picked veldheer. period. u like to say al’s responsible for the bad picks but someone else must have picked the good ones. totally stupid.
October 11th, 2011 at 2:22 am
dang, I did say last 10 years. Thought that was easy to understand.
October 11th, 2011 at 2:23 am
Dan Wilkinson made a pro-bowl.
Jeff George made the playoffs a few times.
Ki-Jana blew out his knee.
Alex Smith has 7 TDs and 1 int for a 4-1 team.
try again.
October 11th, 2011 at 2:24 am
You’re saying Al lied? That he didn’t bring someone in? haha. So when it suits you, he didn’t mean what he said. Gotcha.
October 11th, 2011 at 2:24 am
well buddy, u ain’t finding a wife w/ ur sh*tty personality. here’s one for u. when ur not successful at relationships, try looking at urself compared to those who are. maybe try emulating the ones who are for awhile. it will feel foreign, and u will feel like ur not being u. but after awhile, it will start to be u. u will start feling more comfortable being abetter version of urself. and see a shrink.

Bruce Allen leaves the year after the Super Bowl.
Al takes over drafting.
Raiders don’t win more than 5 games for 8 straight seasons.
Al says he brought someone in two off-seasons ago.
Team has best 2 drafts in recent memory.

October 11th, 2011 at 2:28 am
wilkinson never made the pro bowl.
none of the ones i listed did.
u wanted 10 years. not a very big sample size. i gave u 9 players who were picked #1 in the last 23 years. and din’t even include russell. so, 10 if the last 23 woukd be considered busts for the #1 overall. not a single pro-bowl between them. almost 50%.

George 11 years, 3 playoff games.

well, now ur just showing what a deceptive little liar u r.
al davis always did the drafting. u know this. ur trying to say he took over for bruce allen? laughable!
a draft takes time to hurt or help. we were in the super bowl in ‘02. gannon was hurt the following year. we tried to replace him but failed. we picked jamarcus in ‘07. he set the raiders back. it was a bad run.
he never said he brought someone in, u liar. he said he was going to but it never materialized. ur just such a slippery snake.

wilkinson and george were both considered busts by the teams that drafted them. they had underwhelming careers for their draft positions. besides, the other 8 were busts as well. just shows the poor percentage of being correct in the draft. everyone knows this but u apparently.
October 11th, 2011 at 2:40 am
Sure is better than you simply saying it didn’t happen.
Lot more reason to believe it did than it didn’t.
Al said he would. You say he lied?
October 11th, 2011 at 2:42 am
8 of last 9 #1s have outperformed JaMarcus.
With today’s advanced scouting, online information, and technology, it’s pretty hard to blow a #1, as history is showing us.
October 11th, 2011 at 2:43 am
he said he was going to bring in a big name. it never happened. he was probably speaking of madden. that’s how it seemed to me. my guess is that madden and al talked about it but then madden backed out. but al would never throw him under the bus so he just ate it.
bottom line, a hire was never reported. ur trying to take credit away from al by saying a “phantom” hire was responsible for the last 2 drafts.
then u back it up w/ a “report” that a guy was offered a job but never accepted. this is ur idea of being a good debater?
October 11th, 2011 at 2:45 am
Things are looking good against the Browns although they’re coming off a bye.
They’re 26th against the run and have the 21st offensive.
Benard, DE, was just in a motorcycle accident and is in hospital while the center Mack had an appendectomy just last week.
They have a good QB in Colt McCoy though while we’ve got Campbell.
October 11th, 2011 at 2:46 am
lol,
what upstairs hires ARE reported? Almost none, if any. Not being reported is just the Raiders way.
He said he would, most believe him that he did. The report doesn’t say he didn’t accept.
October 11th, 2011 at 2:48 am
hahaha! man, u really suck at this! first of all, bradford has regressed. 2nd, u can’t count the drafts since jamarcus, as “improvements” that u speak of have happened since his pick. david carr. tim couch. alex smith has a career qb rating of 74.6! finally, he is showing some signs of improvement. just shows what good coaching can do. and that’s what’s happening w/ campbell too.
October 11th, 2011 at 2:49 am
McCoy is a less-talented Gannon. Browns need to surround him with talent to make it work, otherwise he’ll be a backup in 4 years.
October 11th, 2011 at 2:49 am
campbell=#16 qb 84.3 rating
mccoy=#24 qb 78.7 rating.
campbell is better.
October 11th, 2011 at 2:50 am
I like how you turned this from Russell to Campbell.
The point remains that all those guys (Smith, Bradford) in the last 10 years, which was my point, are better than Russell.
It’s really hard to blow a #1 nowadays.

October 11th, 2011 at 2:52 am

#2 megatron
#3 joe thomas
#4 gaines adams
#5 levi brown
#6 laron landry
#7 adrian peterson
#8 jamaal anderson
#9 ted ginn
#10 amobi okoye

baaaaaaad.

October 11th, 2011 at 3:06 am
just facts. 86.4 rating=pretty good. 1 td. no picks. u think it’s baaaaaaaaaaad, b/c he didn’t throw for 300 yards. it’s not bad at all. just did what was necessary to win when asked to do so.
October 11th, 2011 at 3:08 am
u suck at debating. u resort to lies, and ur lack of knowledge of the game is stunning. u should give this up. ur baaaaaaaaaaaad at it.
October 11th, 2011 at 3:10 am
Yes, he did throw the ball 22 times.
For 100 yards.
22 attempts.
100 yards.
spin away spinmaster.
October 11th, 2011 at 3:12 am
tell us how he didn’t really try to complete more than the half of throws he completed.
How captain checkdown masterfully kept the game close, and required Jano to kick record-tying kicks to save us.
Tell us it was impeccable game management to clank half his NFL throws into the ground against one of football’s worst teams.

13 for 22, 105 yards. He wasn’t bad lol
October 11th, 2011 at 3:14 am
uh, dumbazz. he completed a lot of short, ball-control passes, what he was asked to do. he doesn’t call the plays. they ran the ball very well. most passing downs needed less than 5 yards for a 1st. he completed 59% of the passes he was asked to throw. that’s smart football, dummy. again, u don’t know much and u just like to throw things out there in an effort to annoy. but ur lies have no effect here.
October 11th, 2011 at 3:16 am
what exactly was bad about it? the 59% completion rate. the 1 td and no picks? oh, i see it was the 100 yards. like a little boy who only understands big #’s. ur like some idiot who thinks a qb is awesome when he throws for 300 yards with 2 td’s and 2 int’s and his team loses. but look at the yardage! he’s awesome!
October 11th, 2011 at 3:23 am
u lose. i win.
October 11th, 2011 at 3:23 am
he was asked to miss the medium and deep throws. Gotcha.
It was the worst start of any QB vs Denver so far.
It was his worst start of the year.
It was bad. Get ovah it!
The point of the QB is to help move the ball.
He helped move it…100 yards! lol
October 11th, 2011 at 3:25 am
u don’t know football. it’s obvious.
October 11th, 2011 at 3:26 am
He caused Lechler to punt a season-high 6 times. I’m sure that was part of the gameplan also.
DMac ran for 150. Must have created some great opportunities to throw. Oh wait.

the defense id run by the DC, dummy, not al davis. rob ryan runs the same defense today as he did then. so does bresnahan. when he fired kiffin, he talked about the letter that told kiffin to quit complaining, “you ran your beloved cover-2″. he has a philosophy. he hires people he thinks are on the same page. they do their thing. he gives them advice and input. simple. the only thing different the past 2 years is that the players he brought in are developing and the coachoing staff he brought in are doing well. he was unafraid to fire people he was wrong about. that’s strength.
October 11th, 2011 at 4:28 am
sorry bud, he gave Rob Ryan a whopping 2 months to install a 3-4 scheme before making him scrap him.

Night.
October 11th, 2011 at 4:29 am
and there is no difference the past 2 years. We finished 27th in run defense last year and are 31st in overall D this year.
Nice try though. Players developing and all that.

the coliseum will be jacked sunday. w/ the al davis tribute and fans believing. the players will feel it. they are believing too. just look at dhb. he was amped. pumping his fists. he played better than i’d ever seen him. this team may come out smoking. the browns suck in run defense. the raiders could pile up 200 yards. and i truly believe dhb has arrived. i went from thinking he would have about 45/650 to now thinking he could get 70/1000. the light went on. we witnessed the game that marks their arrival.

Glad you’re not in charge of personnel.
I like Pryor’s chances of being a talented NFL QB better than most, but he’s nowhere close to ready yet.
If a QB with Tebow’s skillset but without the media hype coming out of college entered the draft, he’d be taken in the 5th round and coverted to a new position.

We should be able to get our running game going again against Cleveland. Having said that, opposing defenses will be loading the box against us so we have to get more consistent in the passing game.

Fk Romo I couldn’t care less what Dallas is doing.
October 11th, 2011 at 7:55 am
Put me on the “likes” Tebow side of the room. He has issues with his technique, mechanism and reads, but he is a born leader and a spark, whenever he is on the field. He will get a team wins, like Dalton and Newton will. But I think Elway will still draft his own franchise QB next year, and all of Orton, Tebow, and Quinn will get released/traded.
In the same vein, I am also very high on Pryor. He is cut from the same cloth as Tebow, Newton, Dalton. Accustomed to winning, they want to keep winning, and they work hard behind the scenes. Pryor might take a year behind Campbell, might not hit the ground running like Newton did, but he’s got more upside than Campbell. To win, you need QBs who take it on their shoulders, who take risks in a game, because to win you really have to PUSH, cant toe a safe conservative ‘avoid error’ approach.
As much as we all hate Rivers, for instance, he is a machine in the same sense. Great competitors is what you want pulling the wagon.

++++++++++++
This schit drives me up a wall. Replace “Tebow” with “Gradkowski” and you wouldn’t have a change a thing. What is it that makes everyone go ga-ga over Tebow then? Because he’s a tough runner?
October 11th, 2011 at 8:03 am
I’d only like Tebow if he was a Raider but since he’s not f him.
October 11th, 2011 at 8:05 am
Gradkowski can’t stay healthy, limited arm, doesn’t offer the running ability, not as decorated a man as Tebow in the sense of leadership, winning pedigree.
When Russell was still starter I was among the few who believed in Gradkowski as a better option, because he was more able than Russell who was clearly on his downward spiral. But Gradkowski’s ceiling is limited.
Tebow…he might not become a franchise QB anywhere, there’s that risk, because he’d need a HC/GM/Owner who believe in him, are patient to persevere thru his learning curves. So it’s a matter of whether Elway/Fox end up believing in him beyond this year or not, and if they don’t, not sure who else out there might (maybe Gruden as a HC for a new team). He’s not going to be a good-looking pocket QB, flashing talent there like Brady, but someone more like a Bernie Kosar but with tough running ability too.
October 11th, 2011 at 8:08 am
Anyone who thinks Kyle Orton brings more to the table than Tim Tebow isn’t paying attention.
Orton bores his offense, his fans and even his own team.
Tebow invigorates all 3, and thankfully Fox was too stupid to realize this and didn’t bring in Tebow the second-half of the MN opener.
October 11th, 2011 at 8:12 am
Tebow burned us early last year but became one dimensional.

He still posted a 100 QB rating on the road in his first start, and became only the second QB in NFL history (Steve Young the other) to have a 40 yard TD run and 40 yard TD pass in the same game.
I said it at the beginning of the year, the future of Tebow scares me exponetially more than Orton, Rivers or Cassel.

As I previously posted, there is a lot of griping here in Cleveland about the Browns, particularly the team’s very inept offense. Too much pressure being put on McCoy, who dinks and dunks to no real purpose. Very low scoring and unintimidating offense. Receivers so unreliable that McCoy won’t throw to them half the time. Just announced rookie WR Greg Little will start. Expect about 25 carries from Peyton Hillis and Montario Hardesty.
Having said that, you can probably count on Schurmur testing the Raiders’ CBs early, perhaps (in the first half anyways)using the pass to set up the run. Maybe try to wear the Raiders down in the second half with a more intensive run game, particularly if the game is close.
Browns defense is similar to Raiders inasmuch as they bend too much, but don’t break as much as you might think with so many young players. Have a growing stud in CB Joe Haden, who may be limited on Sunday due to a sprained knee–but I think he will likely play. He’s very good. Center Alex Mack is questionable after having an emergency appendectomy, and I don’t think he’ll play. Mack is also very good. Not much else to say about their offensive line–it pretty much sucks.
The Browns are very far from an elite team, and if the Raiders intend to re-establish themselves this year this is really a must win against a very beatable team. All Campbell has to do is manage the game effectively and protect the ball. Defense needs to stop the run and force McCoy to throw, which would be disastrous for the Browns.
If we get 150 yards rushing, 3 touchdowns, and minimize mistakes Raiders win this game no problem. If they resort to old bad habits, trust me losing to this team would be a significant setback.
October 11th, 2011 at 8:37 am
He does misfire the deep sideline balls quite often. But he’ll get better as the season goes. Remember that old sayin “Practice Makes Perfect”
October 11th, 2011 at 8:40 am
I hope Pryor can be an answer, because this is Jason Campbell.
He has a 84.3 QB rating. Last year it was 84.5 . His highest year was 86, lowest 77, and averages an 82 for his career.
Give him credit for being consistant, but it is consistantly mediocre. That is Jason Cambpell, he will have some good games, have some stinkers, and show you enough at times to think he will emerge, yet he probably never will.
We will see what Soup can accomplish this year, but Pryor is definately in the organizations plans, and being that he is on a 4 year deal, he will get some run sooner rather than later.
October 11th, 2011 at 8:41 am
GM Vegas….whats your take on Pryor?
You seem to be fascinated with Tebow… Pryor, Newton and Tebow have very similar game!
October 11th, 2011 at 8:44 am
Not much else to say about their offensive line–it pretty much sucks.
***********************
They drafted O-lineman in the first round two years in a row, and they still suck??
Who would have thunk it??
Drafting O-lineman in the 1st round is the stupidest thing ever!!! Really, how much better is Joe Thomas or Jake Long than Jared Veldheer? Maybe they are a little better, but they never made their teams offense any better, and they make probably 10X’s more than Veldheer.
If I were to run a team, O-lineman would be the focus of the middle rounds of my draft annually, but I WOULD NEVER draft an O-lineman in the first round, unless I was 110% confident he was the next Anthony Munoz.
October 11th, 2011 at 8:45 am
GM Vegas….whats your take on Pryor?

I want to see him play, but I thought he was a good value for a 3rd rounder.
Not one to tune in to much Big 10 football, but he looked good enough in his bowl games that I saw to warrant a look.
Not sure if he has the between-the-ears skills needed to be an elite QB in the NFL, but we shall see.

I’m not a coach or GM. Iam just a fan
an that’s what I’m gonna do. Go out an root for the raiders when ever they step on the field

Individually Pouncey is the best Center in the league, but we all know that you need 5 guys pulling in the same direction for the Oline to work. One weak link and the whole thing comes crashing down.

I am suprised to say, that we may already be there right now.

The defense will hold us back right now. We can gut some wins out in October with less the stellar play, but in January our Defense will get us killed quickly.

We shouldn’t even talk about Pryor for another 2-3 years.

Soup can’t throw deep. He blows opportunities over and over. No doubt these WIDE OPEN receivers clear out space to pass underneath.
He may get better. We can only hope. But right now he makes games that shouldn’t be close into barely winning. Thank God for our defense last Sunday.
He may very well be the weakest link in our offense.

soup is still adequate. (barely)
Technically he hasn’t lost us a game.
Although overthrowing wide open DHB out of bounds in Buff might have been the difference. I think of Buff as more of a team loss.

soup did bring back the deer-in-the-headlights glaze.
Briefly.
Snapped out of it tho.
