SackLunch, thanks for the link to the Lombardi column. It’s the most revealing thing I’ve read about Al and the slide from 2006. I am sure that part of his ever-increasing irascibility was that he was frustrated by his increasing infirmity. It happens to almost everyone when age robs him of vitality or presents him with unceasing pain. Making it worse, I am sure, is that his football team was not getting better, and it stands to reason he became even more impatient than usual, knowing he might not have much longer to mold it into a success.

Coach, Scout, GM, owner, Managing Partner made the final decision on every draft pick- he probably from time to time had a coach, coordinator, assistant, and/or scout persuade him on certain players, in the end every pick was Al’s final decision.

Been seeing this debate about Huff and Leinart pick and I have to jump in.

Of course Al picked Huff. Anyone that thinks Al would let someone else choose the first round pick is silly. However, what some of you got confused with is somewhere in that season Al made a statement to the reporters that he wanted Leinart and Shell talked him into taking Huff. Here is an article that said Shell was shocked by Al’s comments. Trust me Al makes all the picks in the first round.

Terribly inaccurate, around 50% for all those games, more INTs than TDs.

Some of you guys are so disingenuous it’s sickening.

All day long you preach that Davis is a dictator. Davis makes ALL the personnel decisions. Davis runs the draft.

But somehow, someway, the players that end up being stars or very good players, miraculously, mysteriously were picked by someone OTHER THAN Al Davis.

Yeah, i’m sick of that crap too. Al made some bad picks and he made some real good picks, but…HE MADE THE PICKS.

Nobody here is saying every decision Al made was the right one, but to still sit here and try to disparage EVERY positive thing the man did; especially in light of this weekend?…not good.
