Curry a Raider; Davis odd man out
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, October 13th, 2011 at 2:48 pm in Oakland Raiders.
The Raiders confirmed Thursday afternoon that Aaron Curry had passed his physical and has been added to the roster.
Curry marked the news with a celebratory message on his Twitter account.
Meanwhile, linebacker Bruce Davis, whose blocked punt led to a field goal in the first half of Sunday’s 25-20 win over Houston, said on his Twitter account he’d been notified his services were no longer required.
Davis spoke at length both Sunday and Monday about the pride in producing such a big play following the death of owner Al Davis, given that he is a second generation Raider. Bruce Davis was a Raiders offensive lineman in the 1970s and 80s.

That’s rough hacking dude like that.
Don’t we have dudes on the roster that provide nothing?
October 13th, 2011 at 2:50 pm
Bruce Davis, you will be sorely missed.
Whoever you are…
October 13th, 2011 at 2:53 pm
Sup Goldie!
Speaking of wives, I wonder if mine will let me repaint the house in Silver and Black?!? Thaad fire up the neighbors something amusing…
October 13th, 2011 at 2:54 pm
Bruce Davis II, the man who blocked the punt on Sunday to get our team’s lifeless butts in gear!
May you continue to hone your craft and come back home again….
October 13th, 2011 at 2:55 pm
Welcome to the silver n black AC.. now go out there and play hard… make the raider nation proud!! Vindication is a beautiful word!!

Thank you Mr. Davis II
October 13th, 2011 at 2:57 pm
this talk of Jacoby is insane..
I can live with Bush,
DMAC would get more TD since Bush gets all those red zones on the back of DMACS heroics.. TD is a TD however.
p.s who drew the penalty to negate DMACS 40 yarda vs Texans?
October 13th, 2011 at 2:57 pm

Thanks for the trade hue… this Guy will be great!! Mark it down…. lets go AC.
October 13th, 2011 at 2:58 pm
This guy isn’t Gholston or Maybin or russell. He’s made a ton of plays. Got to let guys play to their strengths. Don’t think pete carrol gets that about the NFL. Maybe that’s why they are not very good.
October 13th, 2011 at 2:58 pm

CC however, that was a phamtom call. The Dt was to the refs back so he was not in a position to see if CC held or not, as he clealy did not hold…
October 13th, 2011 at 3:00 pm
It’s always sad to let a true Raider go, like Bruce Davis II.
October 13th, 2011 at 3:00 pm

October 13th, 2011 at 3:01 pm
@post10, Mamba, that was Cooper Carlisle I beleive you are referring to. The supposed illegal “chop” block. Horrible call btw. Satele was on a different guy, if they touched it was by a centimeter and entirely incidental and irrelevant…

Exactly – The bust label is way premature for Curry, i think we will be marvelling in raider brilliance in the coming weeks for this trade, huge chip on his shoulder and hes coming to the fearsome (work in progress) raider D …

My father told me I was scaring my family during the NE game. I was apopleptic at that 12 men on the field situation.
My family stayed at the school pumpkin patch until the game was done last week, but I layed off the whiskey anyway. There will be NO SUCH reservations on THIS Sunday however. I will be partying in the Coli with the NATION, no holds barred.

NMD, totally agree on NFL officiating but totally disagree with the chop block. I watched that over and over and Satele was in NO WAY engaged with the guy Carlisle chopped. He was 100% on a different DT. I was sober for the Houstain game otherwise I’d defer to your assessment…

==========================================
It actually wasn’t. What the rule states is if someone is engaged another lineman cannot come up and cut him. If you watch center play, almost every time there hands and arms are up at the snap. That’s what happened on that play. Satele really didn’t “engage” their lineman. In other words yeah, you could call it, but it was pretty ticky tack. As for Veldheer getting pinned for holding? That was non existent.

I won’t make any excuses for him on the chop-block. Miscommunication between Satele and Carlisle and a clear penalty.
On the Carlisle hold, I thought that was bogus, but we scored a TD on that drive 2 play later anyways, so who cares?

300 yards rushing in one game is insane.
Unless it is a playoff game, I vote against that and give some of those carries to Bush.
Would be interesting to see what those top single game guys did the next week.

if you sign off on it, maybe we can compromise and give bush more work the following week to rest dmac.

Bruce Davis was on the roster because of Al Davis’s loyalty to former players. Looks like some of the football guys in the organization are quickly putting an end to that.

texans focused on moore and dhb was thus left more open to be targeted more. we have a good wr crew, they focus on one we can spring the other. dhb has become reliable and valuable now we can throw both sides of the field. helps open up the running game for dmac more now, browns cant go all-out against one offensive weapon. if we win big, there should be a lot of our players with good stats.

lol, yeah, romac with some key stat would be nice.
colt mccoy will be bootlegging often me thinks, he’ll get killed in the pocket, but like i said yesterday, browns will rely on the play-action bootleg like the texans exposed us early, we’ll be wary of it, lamarr houston will be seeing blood as right-handed qb’s usually roll out that side.

Q: [Arian] Foster comes out, first carry, runs for 20 yards – still confident at that point?
Coach Bresnahan: Absolutely 100-percent confident because if you know football and you watch what we did on the play, we didn’t adjust with our linebackers to the motion and we didn’t adjust with the corner to set the edge. We let them get the edge on us just like we did in the other games

October 13th, 2011 at 4:30 pm
Q: How did [DeMarcus] Van Dyke play?
Coach Bresnahan: You know what, he did a good job. The thing I thought he did coming back from his little nicks and bruises was he came out and tackled a couple times on the edge. I was happy to see that but he defended well in pass coverage and was a force in the run defense as far as helping to set the edge, so I was impressed.
Q: Surprising guy? He must weigh about 150 pounds?
Coach Bresnahan: No, I wasn’t surprised. I was just happy to see him back and feeling confidence. I think he gained confidence as the game went on. I think he’s going to continue to do that with experience, so we’re excited for him.
—————————————————–
Agreed.
I think DVD has MUCH more potential than Chekwa. Seems to have much looser hips.
Chekwa is much more physical though, but kinda stiff in the hips.
I think we have 2 VERY good young corners with DVD and Chekwa.

Outside of the Denver game, I haven’t seen any evidence that supports that. I could be missing something, but everytime I see Gio, he’s looking pretty bad. Be it a pathetic attempt to support the run, shoddy tackling, bad angles, or late in pass coverage.
I agree that Boyd gets beat too, but at least his run support is solid.
Gimme something, would ya?

—————————————————–
Hmmmm……
Unblockable?????
No mention of Henderson from Kubiak?
October 13th, 2011 at 4:42 pm
When I re-watched the replay, twice Jacoby Jones had DVD beat on some inside cross, and Schaub missed badly.
One of those plays was on 3rd down on the second to last drive. Next play, they ran pretty much the same play, and DVD was called for PI.
He may have “loose hips” but he has a lot of loose coverage too.
October 13th, 2011 at 4:44 pm
Q: In the games you guys have won, the D-Line has been dominant. In the games you haven’t, they haven’t. What’s been the difference in those games?
Coach Bresnahan: Well again, I think setting the edge in the run game because we allowed people – when you look at the two big games we lost, it’s the perimeter run that’s opened up and we haven’t stopped it.
——————————————————-
Setting the edge?????
Hmmmmm
Does Henderson help set the edge?????
October 13th, 2011 at 4:45 pm
Wasn’t there talk in the offseason of making Boyd a LB? I think that had to do with his tackling and run D skills.
Chekwa seems better than DVD to me. But it is a very close race by my observations. Unlike some of you, I do like Gio, but not more than Huff/Mitchell. About as much as Boyd, with Boyd having the advantage because of his run support, as some of you stated.
I think that diving INT he had a few games back put him in my “likes” list.

J Hill,
all I know is that we need to improve the Nickel Safety spot ASAP
October 13th, 2011 at 4:47 pm
JFB,
That PI call was BS. Incidental contact.
How many passes were completed against DVD the whole game?
He’s a rookie. I’m not saying he’s Revis. He’s going to give up some completed passes. Those other guys get paid too.
I like what I see from that kid. Put 10 lbs on him, and he’ll be even better.
October 13th, 2011 at 4:47 pm

First play of the game was on him, or in his zone.
Not sure if his man was the guy who caught the ball, but his fadeaway jump to a ball thrown right at him was funny in a not-so-funny type of way.
The PI call on the 4th down play that would have pretty much ended the game.
Not sure of others, that’s off my head. And a penalty on a punt return.
Lots of room for improvement.

Raiders.com does seem to be much better this year though.
October 13th, 2011 at 4:52 pm
Bruce Davis senior was a starter at offensive tackle for the Oakland/LA Raiders. Not a DE as previously noted.
October 13th, 2011 at 4:53 pm
John Henderson is the most underated player on our roster and possibly in the division. He was doubled on the last play against Houston and was blowing the double team str8 back. He is/will be key for our defense as the D will change without Al’s hands all controlling it. We will blitz more, and move personel around more. watch.

You can’t be serious.
The Texan came across the field, DVD never saw him. The Texan jumped in front of him, or should I say across him.
It would have been a pick for sure had that guy not come outta nowhere. It’s not like they were fighting for position and DVD made some awkward move.
October 13th, 2011 at 4:54 pm
Pryor will be inactive pretty much all season unless JC gets hurt, or on the last couple games we are 12-2. And if that happens, he might even see some action in those two last games if we are up 17+ points on our opponents.

DVD did make a funny move. But the Texan WR also did come out of nowhere. That ball was an easy pick and DVD was just waiting for it, not his fault the Texan made a hell of a play with a spiderman/superman type move. I think that’s why he looked so funny. Because when he was expecting the ball to hit his hands and they came up empty handed he was like “What the…!?” and hence the funny looking body expression.

It is sad to see Bruce Davis II let go, he has true Raider spirit and has true desire to contribute as he did in the Houston game. It is Giodano, Porter and Boyd are 3 do nothings that can be released, they are not contributing to Raider success. BTW in the Houston game on Raiders last possession, did any one notice the holding that was taking place on Moore on the long throw, the defender had his arm blocking off Moore’s arm and call was not made, look at it and see what I mean.

October 13th, 2011 at 5:21 pm
There is a reason Joe Porter and Chekwa emerged ahead of DVD in the rotation to start the year, and it wasn’t because they had looser hips.
I don’t doubt that DVD may have more upside than those two, though. Just still waiting to see it.

They need to contain Hillis and put consistent pressure on McCoy and disguise coverages in the secondary to confuse McCoy.
Raider can’t allow the big play on 3rd down conversions or on screens!
On offense, we need to see more of the SCREEN game with DMC, BUSH AND Jones and lets see them pass the ball more to Ford and get him involved.

I feel bad for Davis 2, but since he was on the roster to start the year, at least his salery is garentied for the year. They must be pretty confident McClain will be ready to go this weekend, or I think they would not have cut a LB. I wish the Best for B. Davis.
October 13th, 2011 at 5:26 pm
Not to beat a dead horse, regarding the alleged Carlisle chop block, however, you must understand the chop block rule first and foremost….A simplified explanation followed by the official rules wording…. An illegal chop block doesn’t occur when, for example, the center engages the nose tackle and one or both of the guards block him low. Instead, an illegal chop block happens only when the offensive lineman delivering the low block was originally lined up more than one position away from the offensive lineman who initially has engaged the defender.
Here’s the official rule, “On a running play, A1, an offensive lineman, chops a defensive player after the defensive player has been engaged by A2 (high or low), and the initial alignment of A2 is more than one position away from A1. The rule applies only when the block occurs at a time when the flow of the play is clearly away from A1.”
And so, if the center hits a guy high and a tackle hits him low, it’s a penalty. When it’s a center and one of the two guards, the chop block is not illegal….This particular call against Carlilse was not a penalty…..Period….
October 13th, 2011 at 5:27 pm
Just Fire Baby,

Fair enough.
But you don’t seem to give him credit for his coverage. Again I say that I don’t recall too many passes being thrown his way during that last game. That would tend to indicate his man is covered.
Back to that preseason game, kinda along the same line, the very next play to Fitzgerald was PERFECT coverage by DVD, and you just brushed it right off.
DVD is in position to make the plays that you are asking for. Actaully got his hands on that ball that ball at the end of the game where he was called for PI. It’s coming. I’m sticking with my prediction of him being the man coming out of the bye week.
October 13th, 2011 at 5:29 pm

If we trust in our coaches, then they have seen that Curry can fit in and be productive for us in our system. Playing to his strength and comfortibility he will be resurrected from the bowels of the Seahawks to
the might force of destruction against our opponents.
Our history of converting other failed-players in other systems too a level of productivity originally anticipated but never consumated … will be revealed
in a few weeks when we play Denver and especially when
we play the dischargers in diego-ville. And, that’s a guarantee!

There is a reason Joe Porter and Chekwa emerged ahead of DVD in the rotation to start the year, and it wasn’t because they had looser hips.
——————————————————
Agreed.
The reason is he was hurt.
October 13th, 2011 at 5:32 pm
It’s not debatable, regarding the number of times throughout the history of Raider football that the team has come out on the WRONG side of the NFL officiating crews….It is worth noting, however, that the Raiders as an organization, have always persevered….
October 13th, 2011 at 5:32 pm
Porter got the Lion’s bulk of the run week 1, Chekwa the start against the Pats, and DVD against the Texans.
Seems the staff is letting each guy get a chance to emerge.
Maybe DVD did this past week, but if he is going to be a starter for a playoff team he has to get better, and quickly.

This is what a friend just told me on facebook.
Her: I’ve been to the Raiders stadium and believe me, it’s not a desirable place to be and I don’t dislike the Raiders, it’s just a crappy stadium.
My response: For those of us in the Raider Nation it is Holy Ground.
Her: Maybe so, but it’s dirty Holy Ground. We were too worried about the birds pooping on our head to watch the game! LOL
……..
I hate to hear this. Hope the Raiders move forward with some kind of new stadium deal.

Sorry, not going to give him credit for grabbing a guy and getting called for PI (on basically the same route as the play before) than letting the ball clank of his hands.
I’m sure DVD isn’t hanging his hat on that either.

It is silly to think the NFL has a vendetta against the Raiders. Sure, there have been some horrible calls over the years, can’t deny that. But, I’ve seen the Raiders get away with a lot plays that should have been called a penalty or shouldn’t have been. Campbell has been the beneficiary of some of the lamest roughing the passer calls I’ve ever seen.

May not seem like it with all the shiny toys in the draft (DVD, D-Moore, Taiwan) but Wiz 2.0 may have the best career.

He will be on the All-Rookie team this year, and the Pro Bowl shortly thereafter.

October 13th, 2011 at 5:51 pm
Just on Henderson, his presence forces teams to rush outside. Not having him there allows teams to also have inside lanes. Henderson is a huge plus to the DL. It’s a group thing on every play. Stone-walling the interior, forcing teams to rush outside, having the LBs and CBs contain the edges, forcing everything back inside where the likes of Henderson, Kelly, Seymour and ideally a thumping LB are there to greet them.

Not a coincidence. AD knew what he was doing. Bring in HuJack and give him a year to get familiar with AD & the team and then name him HC if AD still liked him after the year of getting to know him better. In case you haven’t noticed, under the AD regime, things didn’t happen by accident.
My feeling is that HuJack will be with us for many more years, perhaps a decade like John Madden. I also believe that will hold true for Al Saunders. This team is now experiencing something new – continuity of leadership. It’s almost like a new concept.
October 13th, 2011 at 6:38 pm
Hue is a very sly dude. He embraced AD rather than trying to create his own personality. Had Al been alive, Hue would have been gone at some point due to either his rising fame from winning, more money from other teams, or losing.
If you haven’t noticed, Hue has been publicly (in an indirect way) campaigning to get personnel power. How many times have we heard him proclaim AD has taught him this and that when it comes to personnel? Dude is one sly fox and hitting all the right buttons.

Hue has a much more Macro, worldly view to things that works perfectly in the situation we have here, than Cabes.
Hue realizes the opportunity that has presented himself, for him to create a name for himself, and become a very powerful NFL HC. Hue loves the camera, and has been accused of being his own biggest fan at times, but in this case I don’t think this is a big deal.
No doubt, Hue sees this as an opportunity to win games and make a huge name for himself. Cable would have looked at as an opportunity for the boss to finally get off his azz, and a opportunity to negotiate more fat chicks for road games.

Pro Football Focus is the site that does the “burn rate” stuff too.

I don’t want to put him in a whole bunch of spots,” Jackson said. “I want to let him play one thing and let him become great because the guy has great talent.”
Jackson makes it sound as if Curry is without flaw. Curry’s play the past two-plus seasons with the Seahawks suggests otherwise.
Recently, the Seahawks benched Curry in favor of rookie K.J. Wright, a fourth-round draft pick. Even so, Jackson is undeterred.
“He’s athletic, he can run, he tackles, he takes on linemen, he takes on backs,” Jackson said. “He’s a really good football player. Obviously, I can’t speak to what went on up there, but I know what’s going to go on here. So I’m excited about getting

I wonder how Corky sees that Jackson thinks Curry is without flaw when he clearly states he’s going to let him play one spot and do what he does best. He’s just pointing out what he does best instead of focusing on what he doesn’t do well. Something the Raiders have always done which is why they have had the success they have had with castoffs

The Poophawks might have been trying to turn Curry into a rocket scientist. Let the man be a wrecking ball on the outside and let’s see what happens.

Put the player in a position to be successful, and make plays. Allow the player to do what he does best.

Coming out of college I liked his work ethic and determination. I thought he had a chance and kind of hoped The Raiders might get him as a low round draft choice. Anyway, now that he is a Bronco I have to root for him to fail, but I still have a fear that his leadership, work ethic, and just downright determination to win might make him succeed.

Rich Gannon was athletic, could make plays with his feet. Was not highly thought of as an NFL prospect coming out of college. Was considered to change possitions because of his athleticism (to db.) He took several years to develoup into a quality qb. When he played an KC they won. When GrBeck play they lost more, but in the end they chose to go with Grbeck because he was the classic NFL passer. In the end it was Gannon who had the better carreer.

Report: Broncos shop Brandon Lloyd
ESPN.com news services | October 13, 2011
The Denver Broncos have engaged multiple teams in trade discussions regarding Pro Bowl wide receiver Brandon Lloyd, according to a report in the Denver Post.
Lloyd
The report, citing NFL sources, said the Broncos are seeking a third, fourth or fifth round pick for Lloyd. One of the sources told the Post the Carolina Panthers and Tennessee Titans were among “three or four” teams that have expressed interest.
Lloyd, who led the NFL with 1,448 receiving yards last season, leads the Broncos this season with 283 yards on 19 receptions. Denver still has young receivers in Eric Decker, Demaryius Thomas and Eddie Royal.
The NFL trade deadline is Tuesday.

yup they are always 3 yards to deep, when he throws the deep ball, he is a okay dink-n-donk qb, and thats not the raider way! furthermore when he gets in the red-zone he freezes, he can make a lateral pass and the WRs can run it in, but in the red-zone he cant throw into the end-zone… thats a biggy too!

Anyone else notice MM34 destroy Giordano on that play he got concussed on? That was pretty crazy.
He also had some legit coverage on the final play of the game.
You know Hue sees this. If they feel good with his knee I expect #34 to eat up some of #30 and #27s snaps.

JC doesn’t seem too bad. He is definitely “servicable”.
He needs to hit a few of those deep balls. The one he did hit was way more D.Moore than JC, and i’ve seen enough of those out of bounds deep passes.
He goes back to pass and I see him launch it long and I get excited…and then i go “dang c’mon man”.
I do that too often.

Before the start of the season, I was curious how Hue would perform as a sideline coach on Sundays. I was already extremely happy with the way he represented the Raiders. I was convinced he’d be a fabulous ‘face of the franchise’ and really admired the open respect and love he displayed towards Al Davis.
I was sold on Hue in that capacity, but wondered what sort of game day manager he’d be.
Would he manage the clock well ? Use of time outs ? Challenges ? How aggressive would he be ? Situational decision making; going for it on 4th down as opposed to punting or attempting a long FG.
After 5 games, the picture of Hue as a game day General is coming into focus, and it’s mostly very good.
There are some concerns though.
The first area of concern is the unnecessary burning of time outs. This has been a noticeable problem since last season, and I’m sure part of the problem is due to JC, but it’s one that has to be cleaned up immediately. The Raids continually burn timeouts early, seemingly every game. Eventually this is going to bite them. They will lose chances to score due to not being able to stop the clock. They might not be able to challenge a call due to not having any time outs left. They played a large portion of the second half in Houston without a single time out remaining. Not good.
Another area of concern is settling into a pattern of play calling that alert opponents might pick up on. This is a very tricky and subtle sort of thing.
Case in point: Trying to ice the game late with the passing game rather than being ‘conservative’ and choosing to run clock.
Examples: In ALL 3 wins this year – Hue had to make a crucial decision whether to keep the ball on the ground and run clock or go for the ‘dagger strike’. He opted for dagger in each instance. The first dagger in Denver (the completed pass to DHB) worked well. The attempted dagger to DHB in the end zone against the Jets failed. The dagger to Moore against Houston failed.
I actually like the aggressiveness in those situations although it can reasonably be stated that it’s not clock management at it’s best.
It should be noted that all 3 ‘dagger’ attempts were to the right side – and the two that failed were deep passes up the sideline or into the corner of the end zone – passes that JC has NOT shown an ability to complete consistently.
The Houston game was the first game in quite a while that the Raids did NOT run some sort of reverse. A little trend breaking there. But we did see a repeat of the flea flicker (this time with Bush aborting the toss back to JC that DMAC had actually made in a previous game).
Another area of concern is penalties. Obviously, (Hue!) there’s way too many being incurred. However, I honestly believe Raider games are more closely officiated than other NFL contests and Hue is making every possible attempt to rectify this long ongoing problem.
Overall, I give Hue a B+. The fake punt snap to Cartwright was a GREAT call. I appreciate Hue’s overall aggressiveness. The Lechler punt against NE was the lone time he elected to play somewhat conservatively. He is generally fearless, and will utilize the long leg of Janikowski without trepidation.
Clean up the time out wasting, be on guard to avoid becoming predictable in certain late game situations, and Hue’s well on his way to being an excellent game day General in addition to being a fabulous face of the franchise.
Very, very happy with Hue thus far.
1-2-3, AL D. !!

Down the stretch of the Buffalo game, The OL actually started to look good. Philly is moving the ball at will this season. Turnovers have killed them. The defense is another story. But there are so many good players over there, you’ve got to think they’ll figure it out. The NFC East sucks. Eagles will win it.

Canuck completely agree, timeouts not nearly as important as turnovers, bad plays, or penalties.
Although it does seem like we have not had that many great plays following a timeout, we could simply be overthinking options.
Time outs in the first half are pretty much toilet tissue.

How long Ozzie plans to keep being Baltimore’s GM, will determine if DeCosta takes the Raiders GM position. If Ozzie commits to leaving either the end of this year or the end of next season and Baltimore gives DeCosta the pre-contract [for the lack of a better term], the DeCosta stays. Any longer waiting period than that, DECosta is “Gone with the Autumn Wind!”

LB> Groves McClain Curry
October 13th, 2011 at 9:57 pm
The Oakland Raiders have inquired with several NFL front-office executives, including Baltimore Ravens director of player personnel Eric DeCosta, about their general manager position, league sources said Thursday.
The Raiders, who are reworking their front office after the death of longtime owner Al Davis, are contacting candidates to oversee their front office. Coach Hue Jackson and his staff now hold considerable personnel power and also could under a new arrangement.
DeCosta, a 40-year-old who long has been considered one of the elite young personnel men in the league, is on Oakland’s target list, and he worked with Jackson in Baltimore. However, DeCosta has turned down several opportunities in the past and is considered the Ravens’ GM-in-waiting for whenever Ozzie Newsome retires.
It’s highly unlikely that DeCosta will leave Baltimore, given his deep roots in the organization and what it might take to tempt him to depart.

For if we died with Him,

If we deny Him,
He also will deny us.
13 If we are faithless,
He remains faithful;
He cannot deny Himself.

suck it sullivan! nothing is changing. al davis made this team and they’re staying the course.

Davis won’t be out of work for long. Bad move letting him go. Hopefully he won’t go to an AFC West team. Not sold on Curry but we’ll see soon enough I guess.

Sullivan will be having a busy 2011, he’s got a lot of eggs to suck. So unfortunately, he will not be available for any comedy gigs in your city anytime soon.
Thank-you, this has been a public service announcement.
October 13th, 2011 at 10:25 pm
Clevelands two victories are against teams with a combined record of 0-10 (Miami & Indy w/o you know who). Neither team has a qb or a rb worth better than a 7th round pick.
***************************************************
If this is true which I’m sure it is this is very telling. I didn’t know that and it says a lot about how good is Cleveland really. I respect any NFL team and I don’t take anytghing for granted because as soon as you do you get blindsided but their 2-2 record may be a sham.
October 13th, 2011 at 10:26 pm

I hope management brings back all of the old time Raiders as a reunion dedication for Mr. Davis. Bring back all the great Raiders that Mr. Davis cared and loved about. Raider Nation needs a Ring of Fire in honor of all the great players Mr. Davis brought on board to Raider Nation. We need 2 streets named after Mr. Davis. “Al Davis Way and Just Win Baby Lane.”
October 13th, 2011 at 10:58 pm
Although Richard Seymour is ranked 4th right now with five sacks among all NFL players, it’s interesting to note that the three players with more sacks are all DE.
A DE will always get more sacks because that’s what they primarily focus on, while a DT has to hold his gap first and then cut loose after he determines it’s not a running play. Nice going Seymour, keep up the good work and the uplifting of other players around you to play better and at a high level…like Kelly.
October 13th, 2011 at 11:00 pm
Vick is on pace for 4k yds and 1k rushing. I doubt that is based solely on athletic ability or lack of ability to read the D. Eagles are losing due to the little things. Like Ronnie Brown deciding to give the ball away at the line of scrimage or Avant last week juggling an easy ball for an int. They’ve had the lead in 3 of their 4 losses in the 4th Qtr. That says alot about the D’s weakness right there.

Anhdazman…post 498:
Excellent point and maybe you’re right on. Amy Trask said on the radio today on the Napier show that they have something special planned for half time. That could be part of it…to have many of the Raiders greats. WOW, that will be awesome! Your street naming idea is also very good and you should email it to Amy or Mark Davis. Excellent thinking. Hell, I owe you a beer, hey, make that two or three beers.

I guess when we play the Donkeys Curry, when in the process of stuffing Tebow, he can recite bible versus to him on the way down. Kind of giving Tebow a little blessing if you know what I mean.
Curry will find his lost game here under the tutelage of Hue Jackson & Greg Biekert. This will end up being one of Al Davis’ best all time steal deals. Write it down!
October 13th, 2011 at 11:38 pm
What Curry will say when he sack-strips Tebow…
“The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away.”
They can have a running verbal feud shouting things like John 3:12, or Mark 6:23 etc.
October 13th, 2011 at 11:40 pm

LMAO! Very appropriate.
October 13th, 2011 at 11:49 pm
“Corinthians 5:4, b *tch” as Tebow dodges him for a first down.
“Romans: 9:17, timmy boy” as Curry breaks up a pass.

Eric DeCosta (born April 10, 1971, Taunton, Massachusetts) was named the Director of Player Personnel for the Baltimore Ravens on January 28, 2009[1]
Prior to his recent appointment, DeCosta served as Director of College Scouting for the Ravens for six years, at one time being the youngest College Scouting Director in the National Football League. DeCosta, who began his career in the National Football League as a Player Personnel Assistant in 1996, served as Mid-West Area Scout from 1998-2003. For the past sixteen years, DeCosta has worked for General Manager Ozzie Newsome, a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.[citation needed]
[edit] Education
DeCosta attended high school at Taunton High School (Taunton, Massachusetts) and played football at Colby College, where he served as team captain in 1992 under head coach, Tom Austin. A Dean’s List student who graduated with honors, DeCosta earned bachelor of art’s degrees in English and Classical Civilizations in 1993. In 1996, DeCosta received a Master’s degree in English from Trinity College, Hartford.[citation needed]
[edit] Career
Prior to his stint in the NFL, DeCosta worked at Trinity College (1993–1996) as a Graduate Fellow, coaching football in the Athletic Department.
Named as one of the most powerful people in sports under the age of 35,[2] DeCosta has played a strong role in the drafting of Pro Bowl players like Ed Reed, Terrell Suggs, Jamal Lewis, Bart Scott, Le’Ron McClain, Haloti Ngata, and Ray Rice along with significant contributors Tony Weaver, Mark Clayton, Chester Taylor, Ed Hartwell, Dawan Landry, Jason Brown, Jared Gaither, Ben Grubbs, Marshal Yanda, Sam Koch, and Lardarius Webb.[citation needed]
In April, 2008, DeCosta and the Ravens traded the 8th pick in the 2008 Draft to the Jacksonville Jaguars for the 26th pick in the first round and other picks.[3] The Ravens then traded the 26th overall pick and their third round pick to the Houston Texans for the 18th pick, where the Ravens then selected 2008 Diet Pepsi Rookie of the Year winner, QB Joe Flacco from the University of Delaware.[4] In his first season as Ravens starting quarterback, Flacco led the Ravens to the AFC Championship Game, where they lost to the eventual Super Bowl Champion Pittsburgh Steelers.
The next year, in April, 2009, DeCosta and Newsome traded the 26th pick in the 2009 Draft and another pick to the New England Patriots for the 23rd pick in the first round.[5] The Ravens then selected 2009 Offensive Rookie of the Year runner-up Michael Oher, OT, from Ole Miss. [6] Oher was featured in Michael Lewis’ acclaimed book, The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game which was also made into a movie starring Sandra Bullock.
In January, 2010, after reportedly being a finalist for the Seattle Seahawks General Manager position, [7] DeCosta removed his name from consideration prior to interviewing for the post.[8]
One year later in March 2011, in an interview at the annual Owners’ Meetings in New Orleans, Louisiana, Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti referred to DeCosta as General Manager Ozzie Newsome’s eventual successor. [9]

But, then there was this. . .
So, another connection to Hue’s coaching past (Dennis Thurman, anyone?) probably going by the wayside. . .
The Oakland Raiders have inquired with several NFL front-office executives, including Baltimore Ravens director of player personnel Eric DeCosta, about their general manager position, league sources said Thursday.
Unlock HQ Video HQ video delivered by Akamai

Does anyone think DeCosta is any chance at all. Will he be asked to follow the Davis drafting blueprint? Or to do his own thing? If the Raiders want to remain this height-weight-speed specialist, playing “Raider Football” (deep vertical passing, power blocking, and man D, bump and run), then what GMs if any out there are actually that way inclined?

303, knock it off. You started this religious dialogue.
Canuck Raider said NOTHING about religion; YOU DID!
I don’t mind that you come from a nation outside the U.S. Contrary to that; it ligitimizes the Raider Nation for what it is. also; a Raider fan has to be a fan of DIVERSITY. What did Al stand for?
And you are from a part of the world I have had the chance to visit & quite liked it! When talking to the locals & informing them I am a progressive (no political statement here, fellow bloggers. I’m trying to make a point to our European friend. So I am not soliciting responses!) they fully embraced me. When we got into music & beer, that solidified the union.
No, I think that all religious & political discussions have their own place; on religious & political blogs. I consider myself spiritual, not religious. I believe man has subjudicated religion into a propaganda tool. I will never legislate how others should behave. But, I believe the proper forum is similar to that embraced in India.
One is free to observe ANY religion they choose (wonder about occult or animal sacrifice brands) but, get this. It is illegal to recruit, leaving missionary work as verbotten.
Canuck Raider; remember the failed Dieter Brock to the Los Angeles Rams project?
Anyway; I’m 2 it nightly until 6 in the A.M. So, thoughts ferment in the brain pan. No ill will. Peace to the Nation (Raider World; let’s not think small; think global!).

People STILL making excuses for Vick is funny.
It’s simple, he is the Vince Carter of the NFL.
All highlights, no substance.
October 14th, 2011 at 6:07 am
The blueprint is out on Vick.
Blitz him heavy from the right side, force him to his right, and while he will break off some big runs, he will turn it over 2-3 times a game.
Since the Washington MNF game (when the Skins didn’t show-up and he went crazy) in the 12 games since, he is 5-7 with 24 total TD’s (rusing & passing) and 21 turnovers (INT’s and fumbles).

Good Morning Nation!!!
Wow, what happened in here last night?
October 14th, 2011 at 6:13 am
Compare that to Jay Cutler, who definately DOES have the worst O-line in football and maybe one of the worst ever.
Going from the same date (week 11 last year) Cutler played one more game, he won a playoff game, and he is 8-6, with 19 TD’s and 15 turnovers.
So basically, Mike Vick is about on par with Jay Cutler stats wise, and below him record wise.

Just got a Sporting News in the last year.
Never warmed to ESPN magazine.
SI is good, but it is more of a longer-read, off the beated path mag now. They will put in chapter excerpts of sports book, some of them even fiction.
It is more of an Real Sports type sporting magazine, while Sporting News is more stats, and what’s going on this week in the world of sports.
October 14th, 2011 at 6:29 am
Jackson makes it sound as if Curry is without flaw. Curry’s play the past two-plus seasons with the Seahawks suggests otherwise.
Recently, the Seahawks benched Curry in favor of rookie K.J. Wright, a fourth-round draft pick.

We’re already thin at LB with Ricky Brown on I.R. and Sam Williams in the unemployment line for whatever reason. Now Bruce Davis II is chopped?
Aaron Curry has no clue what is required of him from Jackson, Chuck B & Biekert. Is he gonna play against Cleveland with like 2 days of practice? what if ROMAC gets “nicked” and has to leave the game? Blackstock takes his spot and Curry becomes the primary backup for all 3 LB spots? stupid move!
We’re keeping Boyd, Parker & Ausberry over Bruce Davis? Really?

The blueprint is out on Vick.
Blitz him heavy from the right side, force him to his right, and while he will break off some big runs, he will turn it over 2-3 times a game.
Since the Washington MNF game (when the Skins didn’t show-up and he went crazy) in the 12 games since, he is 5-7 with 24 total TD’s (rusing & passing) and 21 turnovers (INT’s and fumbles).
OVER-RATED

Every QB in the NFL is over-rated when they don’t get protection. Vick’s athleticism masks a lot of the OLine problems there. I think Phillys OLine is the worst in football.

October 14th, 2011 at 6:47 am
With the trade deadline only four days away, and with an eleventh-hour deal or two typically being made, speculation has arisen that the Colts could send elsewhere one or two of their disgruntled free-agents-to-be: receiver Reggie Wayne (pictured) and defensive end Robert Mathis.
Phillip Wilson of the Indianapolis Star traces the spitballing to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, who apparently said that the Colts should trade Wayne to the Bills and Mathis to the Jets. That idea has quickly become rumor, even though at this point there’s no reason to believe either deal could happen.
Wilson thinks that the Colts should keep both players. But if the Colts already have decided neither to use the franchise tag nor to give new contracts to one or both players, why not dump them now in exchange for future picks?
The hidden benefit, of course, is that it would be a legitimate way to weaken the team as part of a not-so-subtle effort to “Suck for Luck.”

BCZ,
Agreed. I know Curry re-did his contract for Seattle and now this is considered a “contract year” for him – right?
I wonder how much $$$ we owe him this season, since we traded for him? I imagine if he was a free agent we’d get him for a cool $1 million or less

Philly’s O-line is making a lot of mistakes, but when I rewatched the Bills game, the Bills were sending 6-7 guys.
There isn’t enough guys to block all those attacking the backfield.
Isn’t the QB able to call out blitz protections and pickups? Make a play-call change?

Reid’s time in Philadelphia is done. He’s a dead man walking and for their sake, the sooner management realizes it, the better.
There comes a time when any coach, no matter how good, just reaches that point where his tenure is stale and his players tune him out. It even happens to legends like Chuck Noll and Tom Landry.

To be fair, Jacoby Jones isnt very good. But DVD seems to have no trouble shadowing his man, which is the first skill you have to have in this D. Now he just needs to learn Wrs, QBs, habits, he’ll get it. Timing, anticipation. But as of now, his shadowing is promising. G’morning fellas.
Just finished reading through the thread. First off, love the Curry trade. Talk about low risk-high reward. That guy was supposed to be the safest pick in the draft in ‘09. To get him for a 7th sounds like a steal.
Sounds like he just fell out of favor in Seattle. Hopefully a change of scenery will serve him well. Don’t know if they changed schemes/coordinator or what in Seattle…but it sounds like they want smaller LB’ers in the Thomas Howard mode. 230 pounders who can run and play in space and drop back in a lot of zone coverage.
Not Aaron Curry’s strong suits. Sounds like he’s an athletic 250 lb man who thrives at or near the los. Line him up and let him beat on the TE and set the edge on run D.
Sounds like just what the Dr. ordered in Oaktown. Gotta love it.

Cool man…too bad for 2 things
1. Why in he** did Ditka NOT give Payton a run in the endzone? (I didn’t know how upset he was until I watched the special last night)
2. His life was cut too darn short!

October 14th, 2011 at 8:54 am
Somebody mentioned it earlier..but that is what I’d like to see as well on Sunday. As a true tribute to Mr. Davis it would be awesome to see all former members of the Raiders at Sundays game. All the Hall of Famers.. and Bo Jackson and Tim Brown and on and on.
Even some Raiders like Marcus Allen, who had their differences with Al. He was a league and Super Bowl MVP as a RAIDER. It would be nice to see him on the sidelines in a black suit paying his respects and saying goodbye to Mr. Davis.
I know a lot of those guys have professional responsibities and contractual obligations like Howie Long at FOX. Take a sick day, whatever.
I would love to see every living member of The Raider Family at the coliseum this Sunday. We all know George Blanda, Gene Upshaw, Jack Tatum and the late Dr. Robert Albo will all be there in spirit, paying their respects.
October 14th, 2011 at 8:55 am
Jeff George was the biggest stat-padder ever.

I agree on Mathis, but before you dislike the deal for Curry…i think Ruskell had a number of picks that were taken off the roster. This stems from break from Ruskell’s picks and Pete Carroll, who changed the defense, and about 9 of the guys Ruskell drafted are gone from the Seahawks…Curry probably got included in that bunch as his numbers declined in the new system….Seattle made the playoffs in spite of Curry struggling, so they cut their losses. It may end up being a good pick, but again, another guy who will be changing into another system…but he is good v. the run.

Cliff Branch was sitting next to Mark Davis almost the whole game last time, in a spiffy Black pinstriped suit.
You KNOW he will be there.
I have meet him twice at Wal-Mart’s here in Albuquerque, he is also doing stuff for children’s hospitals.
He told me last year that DHB would be fine, that he is getting open, and in the NFL that is the hardest thing to do.
I guess I should have listened to him more, lol.

Vegas,
You’re dead on about SI,btw. My mom ordered me a gift subscription years ago. They have some great sports photography, but waayyy too many human interest stories. Not my cup of tea. Don’t wanna read a 10 page article about a Bulgarian gymnastics coach, who along with his wife, operate a shelter for HIV positve orphans in former Soviet bloc countries.
It might be a heart tugging story and all, and maybe I’m being too shallow…but it’s not what I’m looking for in my sports magazine.
You woulda loved The Sporting News back in the day. I subscribed to TSN from the mid 80’s til just a couple of years ago. When I first started it was the bible for baseball stat geeks. It actually had the box score from every game played the previous week. You had to wade through all the baseball stats to get to the football coverage, which is what I was after.
If you want thorough Sports coverage, TSN is the way to go. BSPN the Rag is pure garbage.

Apparently, there is this circuit of garage sale hunters from Juarez, that come up, buy as much crap as possible, and take it back to their flea markets.
We were hoping to maybe make $40 (it was a community garage sale thing) and the VERY first guy was from Juarez, rolled up with a Mini-van and damn near wiped us out and spent over $100.

October 14th, 2011 at 9:50 am
Players, IMO, are way undervalued and draft picks way overvalued right now in the NFL.
If you can be a buyer, this is definately a buyers market.
7th round pick and a conditional 4th or 5th, for the #7 overall pick from 2 years ago??
If we did that trade a few years ago, it could have been Arman Shields and Steve Brown for Aaron Curry.
October 14th, 2011 at 9:56 am
Even if Curry just turns into a depth guy and a ST maven, no guarantee you get that with either a 7th or 5th pick.
October 14th, 2011 at 9:59 am
Raiders are desperately thin at LB right now, so even if Curry turns out to be a backup this is a good move.
October 14th, 2011 at 10:04 am
Raiders biggest weaknesses at the moment are QB and MLB – both offensive and defensive captains. I doubt either of these guys are SuperBowl ready, which will cause problems if/when we get to the playoffs

October 14th, 2011 at 10:14 am
Sorry .. AC is a genuine bust. If you had been watching him these past few years, you would agree. I know you really want to believe there is a “4th overall pick” player there? But there isn’t. But don’t worry, my guess is you didn’t give up much to get him. But write this down and remember it… you will be waving goodbye to him in two years.. and will be happy to do so. He just isn’t NFL material.
October 14th, 2011 at 10:18 am
Well if he is a “genuine bust” that was a helluva of draft pick on your guys part.
Mix that with the Tavaris Jackson signing, and you have one potent mix of incompentance in your front office.
Curry may never end up living up to his draft billing, but I bet we squeeze more out of him that what is expected.
October 14th, 2011 at 10:18 am
Bo…post 676:
Evidently you don’t understand the fine intricacies of football, because if you did you wouldn’t rag on a “pro-bowler,” long snapper. That is reason in and of itself to have Condo on the team. But, Condo, is a 250 pounder who has speed and tackling abilities and he constantly shows his abilities going down field after the kick to make tackles and even fumble recoveries.
Ya, you’re really off target when you shoot your spears at Jon Condo.
October 14th, 2011 at 10:22 am

October 14th, 2011 at 10:36 am
Look at the 2009 draft. Every football expert had AC as a ’sure thing’. Who in the top 20 picks, other than perhaps Stafford, has been worth it? You think Heyward-Bey was worth a 7th overall? I don’t. It was a weak draft and yep, AC was a bust at 4th overall. Hindsight would say wish we had taken Clay Matthews (26th)… but we didn’t. Neither did 25 other teams. And the Tim Haskell era is over in Seattle… thank god. But good luck with AC. You’ll need it.

Having a heart attack over the production of a 2nd year player is pretty lame and nearsighted. Some guys don’t blossom until their 4th or 5th year. Or when they get in the right system.
Either way, we risked NOTHING to get a 25 year old who was the best player in the country a few years ago.

I used to get about 80 copies of SI each week.
Never paid a dime for them either.
Seems a buddy of mine decided he would be creative and filled out a bunch of those subscription cards that used to be included in the magazine and dumped them in the mailbox. Within a few weeks I was being bombarded with issues of SI and bills from them.
Now what was I going to do with the subscription cards in my SI issues that I never ordered ?
My buddy, his mom, pop, aunt and grandmother all got subscriptions to SI. Even his dog got a few copies each week.
Of course this ’subscription war’ expanded and eventually included every major magazine. It really got out of hand when Columbia records entered the fray.
Don’t feel sorry or guilty about never paying for all of that stuff, but I kind of regret giving the mailman a hernia.

Either way, we risked NOTHING to get a 25 year old who was the best player in the country a few years ago.
Yeah.. sure he was! On what planet??
Morons. I guess The Raiders have sucked for so long, you guys will accept another teams trash and actually be excited about it!
BWAAAAAAHAAAHAAAHAAAHAAA!!

The Seahawks run a tampa 2 under Caroll. The weakside and strongside LBs are responsible for a lot of ground in that scheme. Some serious zone assignments are there for outside backers in the tampa 2.
Can’t say for sure, but it could be that Curry was out there thinking too much. Thinking about his zone assignment instead of just playing. Combine that with the pressure of his draft status and who knows.
In Oakland I don’t think he’ll be asked to play much zone. If they put him at the strongside and ask him to man up on a TE, he may excell at it due to his size/speed/strength combo. I mean, read this guys scouting reports out of Wake Forest. Almost all of them mention his natural instincts and covering skills.
He essentially gets to start over in a scheme that just might be more suited to his abilities. He wont be expected to be a beast out there from day 1. Could be just the thing he needs. This guy could be one hell of a steal. If not, it’s okay… he came pretty cheap. If it doesn’t pan out, it’s not a crippling move.

The Seahawks suck.

After we win the coin toss on Sunday (we rarely do), we’ll methodically move down the field for an opening scoring drive with McFadden consistently running the ball. As you all know the running game will open up the “play fake run” to creat easy passing lanes for DHB, Ford, Schilens, Moore and Boss.
We just have too many offensive weapons. The DC for the Browns must be having nightmares trying to game plan against our offensive. Even T. Jones will get some playing time as he’ll have a large family presence at the game and Hue will give him a few touches.
Defensively, Seymour will have the boys emotionally ready to kick some butt. Sunday is going to be a fun game and an even better half-time tribute to Mr. Davis.

Everyone knew that Reid would eff things up in Philly.

I agree Plunder. Great post. Also, the Raiders would not signed Curry if they didn’t have use for him. I look forward to the young Lad playing in our system.

Mistake to call Philly a “Dream Team” before the season started and before any seasonal wins….not very wise. I think crazy Vince Young started calling their team the “Dream Team”. lol

Yup, it was VY saying all of that…I bet he wishes he didn’t say a word now…
