Curry getting crash course
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Friday, October 14th, 2011 at 10:50 am in Oakland Raiders.
Aaron Curry, the linebacker acquired by trade from the Seattle Seahawks, spent much of the media window Friday in dicussions with linebackers coach Greg Biekert.
It seems unlikely Curry would be active after one practice unless Hue Jackson and Chuck Bresnahan have any ideas of using him in spot duty for a specific role.
Players who weren’t at practice included defensive end Matt Shaugnessy, fullback Marcel Reece and cornerback Chris Johnson. It is likely all three players will miss their third consecutive game. Free safety Michael Huff was present, atlhough it remains to be seen how much he’ll practice, as was tight end Richard Gordon.
Running back and special teams captain Rock Cartwright, the personal protector for Shane Lechler, appeared to be a spectator with a calf injury. Cornerback Chemdi Chekwa was working with the athletic training staff on a separate field, meaning DeMarcus Van Dyke will probably start for a second straight game.
The Raiders have not made an announcement on the countermove necessary for adding Curry. Bruce Davis was not present at practice and on his Twitter account Thursday indicated he’d been released.

SeahawkFart, take a lude dude. You got robbed. By us. It happens. Doesn’t mean you’ve gotta shrink into a bumbling, rambling idiot.
Having a heart attack over the production of a 2nd year player is pretty lame and nearsighted. Some guys don’t blossom until their 4th or 5th year. Or when they get in the right system.
Either way, we risked NOTHING to get a 25 year old who was the best player in the country a few years ago.
So you know, having an emotional meltdown on this blog usually means you get eaten alive. It’ll scar you for life, little fella.

The Seahawks run a tampa 2 under Caroll. The weakside and strongside LBs are responsible for a lot of ground in that scheme. Some serious zone assignments are there for outside backers in the tampa 2.
Can’t say for sure, but it could be that Curry was out there thinking too much. Thinking about his zone assignment instead of just playing. Combine that with the pressure of his draft status and who knows.
In Oakland I don’t think he’ll be asked to play much zone. If they put him at the strongside and ask him to man up on a TE, he may excell at it due to his size/speed/strength combo. I mean, read this guys scouting reports out of Wake Forest. Almost all of them mention his natural instincts and covering skills.
He essentially gets to start over in a scheme that just might be more suited to his abilities. He wont be expected to be a beast out there from day 1. Could be just the thing he needs. This guy could be one hell of a steal. If not, it’s okay… he came pretty cheap. If it doesn’t pan out, it’s not a crippling move.

October 14th, 2011 at 11:35 am
Aaron Curry Draft report from NFL.com…He may be playing some inside for us.
Analysis
Positives: Strongly-built with long arms to keep himself off offensive linemen when playing against the run. Very smooth in pass drops, staying low in his backpedal and getting into depth at the proper angles. Good hands for the interception, and can break up passes using his hands or a big hit over the middle. Plays the nine-technique very well, ripping off the tackle’s block and getting to the ballcarrier on inside and outside runs. Also closes on the ball quickly when playing in the stack. Able to shed blocks and go through backs on blitzes. Will pop the fullback and create a pile to stuff inside runs. Shows good awareness on misdirection, quickly diagnosing plays and affecting the success of the play. Gets a lot of attention from opponents on special teams because of his size, speed and aggressiveness in kick return coverage.
Negatives: A bit stiff in the upper body, he tends to succeed most in straight-line situations rather than changing directions quickly. Can get to the quarterback on the blitz but doesn’t always make the play. Doesn’t explode into tackles consistently, using his long arms to try and wrap up.
Compares To: DERRICK JOHNSON, Kansas City — Like the Chiefs finally realized with Johnson, hopefully the NFL team that drafts Curry will do likewise and play him in the middle. He has very good athleticism making plays in front of him, but bites often on play-action, lacks good depth playing in the zone and is a bit too stiff to generate the sideline-to-sideline range to make impact plays on the outside, where he struggles to stop the runner’s forward momentum. He can clog the rush lanes when he stays low in his pads. Put him inside in a 3-4 alignment and he can be equally productive getting to the quarterback as he did in college. Play him on the outside and he will be exposed in a quick and deep passing game.

“Oakland is now without picks in the second, third and fourth rounds next year. The Raiders traded the 2012 second-round pick along with a 2011 seventh-round selection for third- and fourth-round picks this past draft to take offensive lineman Joe Barksdale and running back Taiwan Jones. They sent their fourth-round pick a year ago to the Redskins for Campbell.” ESPN

2nd – Barksdale, Jones
3rd – Pryor
4th – Campbell
October 14th, 2011 at 11:38 am
Some observations on the Texans game:
Raiders keep getting burned by TEs – McClain, Branch, Groves, Giordano
Lots of missed opportunities for Jason Campbell – big 3rd downs to Moore and Ford, deep balls to Moore – credit to him on the TD pass to Schilens, though, drawing the safety in by making the play with his feet
Very good game by Heyward-Bey
Stupid penalties – negating big plays by McFadden, 53-men on the field
Raiders still have problems sealing the edge and covering in the flat
Routt is not Nnamdi – has as many TDs against him in five games as Nnamdi did in two years – but also has as many INTs as Nnamdi did in two years
Myers is not very good
QB, LB, CB, DT remain the biggest needs – CB less so if the young guys step up.
This game also underscores the point that no matter how talented the running game is, there are times it won’t work and the QB will have to make plays to win the game. Improvement at the QB position = make more plays = win more games.
October 14th, 2011 at 11:38 am

I’m more interested in seeing our STUD DT rotation make Hillis look like the FB he truly is.

After watching Colt McCoy play for Texas, I gave him virtually no chance of succeeding in the NFL.
He seemed bright enough and determined enough on those Gruden QB camp shows, but I was convinced he didn’t have the arm strength or size necessary for the next level.
Now I’m thinking I was completely wrong and he has a good future. I’m very surprised.
Saw the final quarter he played against the Jets last year and came away impressed by his leadership, coolness under pressure, and ability to make things happen in the clutch.
Was still thinking this has to be a fluke – until I saw his TD pass into the right side of the endzone in the final seconds against the Dolphins this year. That wasn’t a good throw, that was a great throw.
Watched the first half of the Eagle/Brown pre-season game this year, and although the score favored the Eagles, I felt the Browns were taking it to them on both sides of the line of scrimmage. Still not sure if that was due to the Browns bring better than I expected or if it was an early indication that the Eagles weren’t what they were hyped up to be. They sure put the heat on Vick though and banged him around pretty good.
My impression of the Browns is that they have a pretty good squad but don’t have enough firepower on offense. But they’re definitely not a team to be taken lightly, and you don’t want to let them hang around because they do have the ability to snag a victory in a close contest.
Want to score early and keep a foot on their throat in this one. Hope the Curry trade and AD memorial don’t become a distraction. Have to avoid a let down. First game this season where the Raids are favored.

Analyzing the final 53
By Jerry McDonald – NFL Writer
Saturday, September 1st, 2007 at 5:43 pm in Oakland Raiders, Raiders features.
QUARTERBACKS (3)–Daunte Culpepper, Josh McCown, Andrew Walter.
Last call: When (and if) JaMarcus Russell signs, he receives a two-week exemption before the Raiders decide whether or not to carry four quarterbacks.
RUNNING BACKS (5)–LaMont Jordan, Justin Griffith, Adimchinobe Echemandu, Justin Fargas, Oren O’Neal.
Last call: It was decided O’Neal had too much potential to lose, particularly as the sort of blocker Tom Rathman loves. Zack Crockett could have been kept on the roster until Dominic Rhodes came off the suspended list, but would have been entitled to a full season of pay as a vested veteran if on the roster Week 1.
Michael Bush will be evaluated and has a four-week window to return, which begins Week 7.
WIDE RECEIVERS (5)–Ronald Curry, Jerry Porter, Mike Williams, Johnnie Lee Higgins, Travis Taylor.
Last call: No surprises here. Alvis Whitted and Carlos Francis lost their speed scholarships, and Chris McFoy is this year’s Will Buchanon _ watch for him on the practice squad.
TIGHT ENDS (3)–Zach Miller, John Madsen, Tony Stewart.
Last call: O.J. Santiago, James Adkisson . . . Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
OFFENSIVE LINEMEN (9)_Barry Sims, Robert Gallery, Jake Grove, Jeremy Newberry, Cooper Carlisle, Cornell Green, Chris Morris, Mario Henderson, Paul McQuistan.
Last call: Coach Lane Kiffin noted early on that Kevin Boothe was not a system fit, but for him to not even make the 53-man roster after starting 14 times last season is a surprise. Morris apparently fits the system better and has played extensively as a guard. Chad Slaughter missed much of training camp with a calf injury. Mark Wilson was a longshot. With Grove, Newberry and Morris available at center, there was no room for Jesse Boone.
DEFENSIVE LINEMEN (8)–Derrick Burgess, Warren Sapp, Terdell Sands, Tommy Kelly, Jay Richardson, Tyler Brayton, Chris Clemons, Gerard Warren.
Last call: Ever hear of Michigan cornerback Brad Cochran? The Raiders took him in the third round of the 1986 draft and he didn’t make the team. Quentin Moses was the first of three third-round draft picks, No. 65 overall. He was supposedly in contention to be a starter until late in camp and now he’s gone, the first time Oakland has dumped a third-round pick since Cochran.
It could be Moses was outplayed by two players _ Richardson drafted two rounds later out of Ohio State, and Clemons, who played extensively in the preseason as a nickel rusher and can also play linebacker.
Maybe Richardson plays better than most third-rounders and it doesn’t look so bad. But cutting the first pick of the third round means you made a mistake.
The Raiders apparently felt Anttaj Hawthorne was as good as he was going to get, while believing Warren can recapture at least some of the skill that made him a standout two years ago in Denver _ once he gets in shape.
Dave Tollefson was a longshot. Brayton’s shift to tackle probably saved him. Coaches love the guy.
LINEBACKERS (7)–Sam Williams, Kirk Morrison, Thomas Howard, Robert Thomas, Isaiah Ekejiuba, Ricky Brown, Jon Condo.
Last call: Kyle Shotwell and Kurt Campbell were foregone conclusions.
According to Madden ‘07, Ekejiuba rates as the NFL’s worst player. The Raiders think enough of him to keep him on the roster even though he may not be available for a month. Brown’s special teams skills kept him around. Condo is strictly a long-snapper.
DEFENSIVE BACKS (11)–Nnamdi Asomugha, Fabian Washington, Michael Huff, Stuart Schweigert, Stanford Routt, Chris Carr, Duane Starks, B.J. Ward, Hiram Eugene, John Bowie, Chris Johnson.
Last call: The Raiders apparently didn’t believe Donovin Darius could hold up physically or simply didn’t have it any more. They didn’t feel that way at first. This is what Rob Ryan had to say about Darius on Aug. 7:
“I mean, first of all with Donovin Darius you’re talking about a guy that’s got an aura about him. He’s a man, he walks on that football field, he demands respect . . . When he’s on that field, people are scared to death of him. And so we like that intimidation factor. Hey, he’s a good, clean player but he plays the game hard like the Raiders do. He’s got to learn our system and fit in. But trust me, all defenses have spots for great players, and he’s a tremendous player, he’s been a tremendous player in this league, and we’re excited about him. And his leadership and his toughness are great plusses for the Raiders.”
Darius played extensively against Seattle, but minor injuries slowed him throughout camp. Looking into their crystal ball, chances are the Raiders saw either a season-ending injury or a series of minor ones which would make continuity difficult.
Darius played in only 12 of 32 games the previous two years for Jacksonville, with a torn ACL in 2005 and a broken bone in his lower left leg in 2006.
Eric Frampton, noted as a playmaker at Washington State, did not standout either in practice or in the preseason.
Johnson survived an awful night against Seattle to make the roster on speed and special teams potential. Marquice Cole, an undrafted free agent, could be practice squad material.
Starks is the perfect guy to teach the technical part of the game to Bowie, a raw rookie. Both had interceptions against the Seahawks.
Of course, there’s still a week to go before the opener and there could be more moves on the horizon.
KICKERS (2)_Sebastian Janikowski, Shane Lechler.
Last call: Tyler Fredrickson was around to caddy for the two established kickers

Browns CB Joe Haden (knee) missed another practice Friday and is not expected to play in Week 6.
Coach Pat Shurmur revealed Friday that Haden hasn’t even resumed running yet. Defenses have recently been assigning their top cornerbacks to cover Denarius Moore, and Haden likely would’ve given him the same treatment in Sunday’s game against the Raiders. Haden’s absence will move usual slot CB Dimitri Patterson out to left corner, giving Moore a plus matchup. Moore is a better bet for fantasy production than Darrius Heyward-Bey in Week 6.

Like it or not. The rest of the league is showing respect to DHB. The Jets put Revis on him. The Texans optioned to put Joseph on Moore and DHB manhandled Allen.
DHB is playing w/ great confidence and Campbell and him are starting to click together. Glad to see him contribute the way he has been as of late.
Keep it up!

According to NFL Network’s Jason LaCanfora, the Raiders have already begun casting about for a new general manager, inquiring with several NFL front offices.
The front office is being restructured following the death of Al Davis. One name high on Oakland’s list is Ravens director of player personnel Eric DeCosta. That would seem to be a long shot considering DeCosta has turned down offers in the recent past. He’s the successor to Ozzie Newsome in Baltimore.

—————————-
Reading some of the names of the players on that squad make me physically ill. Not to mention Coach Kiffin who I foolishly stuck up for.

October 14th, 2011 at 12:13 pm
The key to DHBs emergence has been the routes he is now running. Not every route is 15 yds plus down the field. Hue and Saunders are calling a lot of simpler routes, as they should. I think we should incorporate MORE simple routes like slants and digs. Send his big arsse across the middle of the field.
DHBeast is going to contribute good things to this team this year!
October 14th, 2011 at 12:13 pm
Groves gets pushed around, weekly, by TE’s and FB’s.
We need someone who can push back a little.

I’ve seen Q make his fair of tackles behind the line of scrimmage
Who else has? (LB)
=============================================
Groves has improved & has shown better (LB) characteristics than Wimbley…
I wouldn’t doubt see Curry at Wlb and Groves taking Wimbley’s spot

Ever see those Reilly “Homecoming” shows ?
Saw two episodes last year. Magic Johnson and John Elway.
Shows was actually quite entertaining, but Rick Reilly is a sack sucking, brown nosing, phony dweeb.
Seems like the type of guy that won’t hesitate to write a controversial, critical, confrontational article – but wouldn’t say $hit in person if he had a mouthful.
He’s a cornhole.

On Al Davis…
Davis, like many men who work their whole life, did enough to praise him and enough to hate him….his legacy will live on for at least another 100 years, he was a great man for that.
On the game…
If Special Teams can show up again on kick returns, it will be a nice plus for us. the trick plays were great but nothing i want to see needed 2 weeks in a row for special teams. I would love to to seen us try to pin the other team inside the 10 on kick-offs using SeaBass’ leg strength for hang time and using our speed to our advantage….too bad we are a bit suspect on the initial hit with our gunner through 5 games(time for an improvement)

Wimbley = Hasn’t really done schit so far this season after receiving his contract
——————————————————-
Wimbley’s contributions come when he lines up at DE and gets after the QB. He’s got a lot of QB pressures. Should be a full time DE, imo.

I think we’ll send the house at McCoy a whole lot on Sunday, w/ AC getting at least 1 sack.

Rick Reilly, is just another media hack who probably never had any athletic ability growing up. Likely was, and still is a jock sniffing dork…
Plus, he is from and still lives in Denver. That should say it all right there…..

He got his contract to get sacks, not pressures.

***************************************

Interesting that I was setting up my brightscope account, and the guy on the phone saw my e-mail and started talking about the Raiders.
Said he lived in SoCal, but was from ATL and is a Falcons fan, and talked about how fun it is to watch Raiders games because of how physical we are and nobody else is like us.
Nice to get those comments these days, as opposed to the ones from a few years ago, which were mostly about our fat, worthless QB.

Wimbley is never going to produce to the level of that contract, imo.
He got over with that NFL ruling, and he and his agent know it. They were prepared to sign the initial contract offer that would have paid him about half of what he’s getting.
I don’t care about his chips though. Good for him he got paid. I realize what type of player he is, and it’s nothing more than pretty good pass rusher.

Raiders trade for Brandon Lloyd.
In a move that might make Tim Tebow fans raise an eyebrow, the Denver Broncos have traded all pro wide-receiver Brandon Lloyd to their division rival the Oakland Raiders for linebacker Quenten Groves and a fifth round draft pick in the 2012 NFL draft.
The deal is contingent on both players passing physicals and approval from the NFL.

Masterbechum, thanks for that. It’s not like reading Kevin Durant’s latest basketball exploits doesn’t make me cringe. . .
One of the Seattle publications had a story on how to appropriately dress for Halloween as a Seattlelite; one has to wear something “Sonics (as in we haven’t exorcosed those demons away quite yet; just like Haters. . .)
But, as usual, you administered your less than caring condlences to the unfortunate (that would be all of them), in this case a Seattle sports fan (the ultimate oxymoron. heavy on the moron).
Oh, BTW; Raiders 38 Brownies 16
