Curry to start at weak side
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Friday, October 14th, 2011 at 12:43 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Aaron Curry is going straight into the lineup at weak side linebacker in place of Quentin Groves.
“I don’t get into what happened wherever he was,” coach Hue Jackson said. “I just know what I know, and what I see. I brought him here of reason and he’s going to play.”
The No. 4 overall pick in the 2008 draft, Curry was the Butkus Award winner as the nation’s top linebacker at Wake Forest but struggled for both Jim Mora and Pete Carroll in Seattle, losing his job this season to fourth-round draft pick K.J. Wright.
“It’s been very eventful, very exciting,” Curry said after his first practice. “Just to know that coach has faith that I can come in and play right away is a great confidence-booster for me. Just to know that he believes in me. My job is to get out there and do my job, be held accountable, to play hard, play fast and just fit in with Raider football.
Curry believes the Oakland scheme will free him to run and hit, as opposed to the more read-and-react system he played in at Seattle. He feels fortunate to be out from the pressure of being a high draft pick that didn’t perform to expectations.
“It’s like a breath of fresh air,” Curry said. “One of the first things coach said was I didn’t have to worry about any of the opinions that were formed on me before the day we met. I had a clean slate, and that he doesn’t care what happened back in the past and it’s all about moving on to the future. When he told me that, I took a deep breath _ that was my biggest concern was if the opinions would pass on from club to club or person to person.”

Raiders trade for Brandon Lloyd.
In a move that might make Tim Tebow fans raise an eyebrow, the Denver Broncos have traded all pro wide-receiver Brandon Lloyd to their division rival the Oakland Raiders for linebacker Quenten Groves and a fifth round draft pick in the 2012 NFL draft.
The deal is contingent on both players passing physicals and approval from the NFL.
October 14th, 2011 at 12:46 pm
Why?

Yeah, I think fake. I would’ve seen it on twitter or something…unless our Bay Area writers are sitting on their hands.

Jerry, it’s not really fair to Curry to say he “struggled” under Mora.
In 14 games he had 54 solo tackles, 7 assists, 2 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, 6 passes defensed and 5 stuffed runs.
That’s not quite the elite production most expected, but it’s not struggling. It’s pretty clear he’s a terrible fit for Carroll’s defensive scheme and that caused his fall from grace.
October 14th, 2011 at 12:50 pm
Why the hell would we want Lloyd…another possesion receiver?!? Chamon Dakota…
Curry starting for Groves? I like it but Groves did handle the bootlegs really well. From what I here…Curry’s a little stiff.

Is the coaching staff playing mind games with Cleveland? Is Curry really starting after one practice? If he is I have to think he’s gonna play a lot of free reign football, attacking the QB often and picking up the TE or back in mostly man coverage.

But with Sho-nasty out, we should see more of Desmond Bryant, at DT and DE.
I like his game, as a rotational guy. Seems to be involved, in the backfield, and most importantly he seems to have grasped the concept of lining up on-sides and not grabbing facemasks( i.e. no penalties).

Two possible outcomes to Sunday’s game:
Either the Raiders defense begins to solve some of its problems against a fairly week and low scoring offense, or…
McCoy dinks and dunks our secondary into oblivion, using short passes to set up Hillis. Browns’ goal will be to keep it close and hope for mistakes. Simply not going to overpower anybody.
Raiders best chance to dominate is to open up a two touchdown lead and force McCoy into playing catch up. Offense can get away with keeping things fairly vanilla so long as we get 130-150 rushing yards and avoid turnovers.

What’s the story on Blackstock anyway ? I know he played for Chuck in the UFL, but where’d he come from ?
Dude certainly looks the part. Great size and apparent physical ability.
Two memorable plays in pre-season. Helmet to helmet roughing the QB, and the big 4th down stop against Seattle near the goal line. Seems like a high motor banger.
What’s his story ?

Hes really locking his defenders up giving DMAC room to run as well as other WR a chance to make big plays. Year 3 is looking to be a good year for DHB.

Fundamentals of the drop-back are extremely important.
The faster you get back there ready to throw, the faster the ball can come out.
I guess that goes without saying, but you see some sloppy footwork sometimes on the the simplest of things.

Revised Aaron Curry contract helped get deal done
Posted by Mike Florio on October 14, 2011, 4:18 PM EDT
As the Raiders reportedly embark on a search for a General Manager, they should seriously consider the possibility that first-year coach Hue Jackson is perfectly capable of running the show.
Per a league source, the trade for linebacker Aaron Curry (who’ll debut Sunday as a starter) included a revised contract that limits Oakland’s financial investment in 2011 to $370,000, the prorated remainder of a league-minimum base salary of $370,000.
The source says that the rest of the guaranteed money on Curry’s contract was paid by the Seahawks in the form of a signing bonus before the trade went down.
Curry, the fourth overall pick in the 2009 draft, is still due to earn $5.7 million in 2012, but the amount is non-guaranteed. If the Raiders like what they see, they can keep him for that amount — or they can try to extend his contract.
In the end, it’s a very low-risk and possibly very high-reward move for the Raiders.

If HuJack or Bresnahan have decided to put Curry in this quickly, they must know something we don’t. They are not making that decision on a whim. Logically, one would think he’d need more practice time to get comfortable with this defense. I guess there is some other pressing need or deficiency we don’t know about. I have faith that HuJack knows what he’s doing. Good luck with this decision.
Of course, if Curry ends up with 3 sacks and a bunch of stuffs, HuJack will look like a genius. Hope that’s what happens.

If we want to keep Curry, they will restructure him and extend him out a few years.
No way can I see them happy enough to keep him, yet just let him linger at 5.7 million for one year.
Doesn’t make any sense.
+++++
Its a 2 way street actually…He may be at a point in his career where the money is not so important to him, as opposed to him playing, and ultimately winning.
Other considerations, he was under pressure from his draft pick status, here he has no real pressure, and not a lot of expectations…

We’re just choppin it up mayne. It’s all good.
I didn’t think Groves was headed to the bench, so that had a lot to do with me saying Wimbley should be our starting RDE.
Curry, Wimbley, McClain are clearly our 3 best LBs and I have no problem with them being the starters.
I love Bryant at DE. Not so much at DT.
Wimbley and Moss are excellent pass rushers from the DE positions.
Bottom line is I think we are in good shape.

The source says that the rest of the guaranteed money on Curry’s contract was paid by the Seahawks in the form of a signing bonus before the trade went down.
=======================================
Signing bonus? Surprised the league approved this. How long before the trade went down. Any new contract revision would have been between the Raiders and Curry. I’m glad we got him but Seattle paid millions to get rid of him? That braintrust in Seattle is a quart low.
October 14th, 2011 at 1:53 pm
I hope ShoNasty is not out for the year.
And I’d like to see Groves added to the DE rotation to get after the QB.
October 14th, 2011 at 1:53 pm
Helluva play by Bryant when he swallowed Foster right after he took the handoff. That was impressive. Think he was at DT that play. Nice quicks.
Raids actually did a very good job stuffing the run after that first Foster ramble.
Kubiak was miked up and grumbling about not feeling good about being able to run. At one point he asked his coordinator to give him his 3 best running plays and stated he was going to run it next series. Don’t think they got squat.

Jhill, I agree with part of your assessment and I have made metion of it several times that, when Wiz was at C we ran the ball well however, you cannot discredit the fact that the best defensive player in the game was nuetrilized by Tonga…
October 14th, 2011 at 1:55 pm
So you sayin Tonga had nothing to do with that?
—————————————————
Let me take another look at it. Don’t recall Tonga’s impact on that in particular. Not saying it didn’t happen.
I thought Tonga had a decent game for a rookie playing in his first game on the road.
Made some mistakes, but wasn’t nearly the dump truck I saw on film against Seattle in that last preseason game.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Don’t know that we need him but that move might be smart.
Now, either sign Bush or trade him before he leaves as a free agent and we get nothing—see Aso case.

Raiders got stuffed on their most important run, the one they needed most. Think it was a 3rd and one and they went right. Lost a yard or two. Had to punt ball back to Texans. Think that was the drive Houston wound up settling for FG.
Not sure of this, don’t have the game on tape, but it looked like Tonga got knocked sideways or completely missed his block there. Texans seemed to know that run was coming and really blew it up.

Some strange going-ons in Houston.
Strangest was the aborted flea flicker. Good thing Bush didn’t toss that back to Campbell. Probable fumble, at the least a sizable loss. If Bush doesn’t stop and look to toss it back – he can probably rumble straight ahead for a large gain. Busted play, still nets a first.
Almost as strange – the absence of a single reverse being run by Hue. If the Raids have had anything resembling a signature or identity play under Hue, it’s been the reverse.
Starting to see some patterns with Hue. He’ll go back to a play or a derivative a few weeks in a row. We saw the flea flicker – DMAC back to Campbell (incomplete pass) – the week before, and last week the aborted Bush flicker.
Crunch time and Raids need to run clock – in all 3 wins, Hue elects to go for the kill shot and pass, instead of keeping it on the ground. Worked in Denver, failed against the Jets, failed in Houston.
Love the aggression, question the wisdom of expecting Campbell to complete long sideline passes or long passes into the corner of the end zone in those situations. Might want to consider something shorter and easier to complete like the one in Denver.

I had a feeling when HueJax said he was going to get more involved and make some changes in the defense, possibly getting into different sets and schemes, according to game situations, and perhaps mix in 3-4 alignments to their basic 4-3. So Curry and Groves could be used together on covering screens and short drops to the backs and TEs, something that has killed the defense. This could free up RoMac and Wimbley to be more aggressive pass rushers.

firstrowsports.tv; direct TV signal via the internet. some buffring issues (missed the thwo touchdowns in th third quarter/fourth quarter against the Jets. That was frustrating).
Don’t use the HD option unless you have a really clean computer (no porn). Otherwise, buffers like mad.
Also; for replays nfl.com has a package for less than $25. Replay the whole season, scout the opposition, replay Raider highlights (watched all of DMAC’s 20+ runs the other night).
So, for less than $25 I watch all the Raider games live & can break down film all week as I (un)patiently await the next Sunday’s kickoff. . .

——————————————————
I’d like to see Wimbley as our RDE.
But I do think he is a decent LB, and certainly one of our best 3.
==============================================
We’ll have to agree to disagree. In terms of pass rush I like Wimbley, but hes not exactly stout against the run. In fact hes rarely involved in stopping it & a 250lb De screams RUN @ ME
3-4 Lb maybe 4-3 iffy
==========================
What the fug is the deal with you?
You have been in this blog for the last two weeks crying your eyes out about Wimbley. He aint the problem with this defense from what I am seeing.
Look no further than the hot mess in the middle.
Of course he could and should play better, but nobody is trucking Cam’s ass on the edge.
He just isn’t getting to the QB, and needs to change his one uppercut rip bull rush technique.
He is a great playa, get ovah it.

Raiders coach Hue Jackson expects MLB Rolando McClain (ankle) to play in Week 6 against the Browns.
There was early-week speculation in Oakland that McClain’s injury might be serious, particularly after they brought in two free agent linebackers for workouts and traded for Aaron Curry. Turns out, McClain is fine. Through five games, last year’s No. 8 overall pick in the draft ranks a disappointing 33rd in the league in tackles. He was more of an IDP bust last season.

According to NFL Network’s Jason LaCanfora, the Raiders have already begun casting about for a new general manager, inquiring with several NFL front offices.
The front office is being restructured following the death of Al Davis. One name high on Oakland’s list is Ravens director of player personnel Eric DeCosta. That would seem to be a long shot considering DeCosta has turned down offers in the recent past. He’s the successor to Ozzie Newsome in Baltimore.
