DT Seymour, former Raiders QB Gannon on Palmer trade

By Steve Corkran
Tuesday, October 18th, 2011 at 3:54 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Here’s the transcript of an interview conducted by former Raiders quarterback Rich Gannon with Raiders defensive tackle Richard Seymour today on SiriusXM NFL Radio:

Gannon: “Let’s start with [Bengals owner] Mike Brown first and foremost. You know, he gets a lot of criticism for the way he’s run that organization over the years but he does come out, in this situation, like a genius. I mean, I think he showed great patience, he rolled the dice in a big way, had teams not lost quarterbacks or had a real need, maybe Carson Palmer would’ve sat the entire year. I think he kinda dug his feet into the ground and said, ‘Hey listen, here’s how we’re going to do this thing, we’re not going to deal Palmer.’ I think he sent that message out right up to the trade deadline. It’s a game of kind of Russian Roulette and it worked out well for him. To think they could pick up a first rounder this year, a potential first round or second round pick next year, I mean, what a great deal for the Bengals.”

Gannon: “Now, on the flipside, let’s look at it from the Oakland Raiders’ perspective. [Head coach] Hue Jackson goes back with Carson Palmer a long, long way. They were together at USC when Carson was in college, they were together in Cincinnati, they have a very close relationship. My sense is that they were probably talking along the way. I’m sure Carson’s reached out to him for advice. I’m not so sure that Hue Jackson was convinced or sold on Jason Campbell. I think that was an Al Davis deal. Hue was doing the best he could. I think when Jason went down this opened up the door [to the] the possibility that they could do something with Carson. I think they got together as a staff, as an organization and said, ‘Let’s put our best foot forward and let’s see if we can address the quarterback situation for awhile.’ If they bring in Carson Palmer that’s it for Jason Campbell. You’re looking at Carson being the starting quarterback there for the next half dozen years. He is 31 years old, some people feel like his best days are behind him, but you look at what the Raiders gave up, not much of a draft left in 2012. The first four picks are all gone; they only have a 5 and a 6 left. I know there was some talk about they explored the possibility of a potential trade with Philadelphia for Vince Young. In my opinion, this is a much better deal for the Raiders. They get Carson Palmer, he can step in there and start tomorrow, he understands the system. I think this is great news if you’re a Raiders fan.”

Seymour then joins Gannon and his co-host Adam Schein on SiriusXM NFL Radio today to discuss the Palmer trade:

Seymour: “One thing that I can take from Carson is just him being a field general out on the field and his leadership ability to get some interesting guys together and try to get them all on the same page. I really remember him being out on the field and, in a sense, directing traffic, getting guys lined up and putting them in the right position. Obviously, it’ll be a learning curve for him because he hasn’t played football in awhile but I’m excited to have a leader on that side of the ball of his caliber. Anytime you have an opportunity to acquire someone of Carson’s pedigree I don’t think it’s something that you can pass up on. When you look at it, Carson and Hue Jackson’s days, they go back to USC when Carson was the Heisman Trophy winner, the first pick in the NFL Draft and a Pro Bowl quarterback. Just with that pedigree alone I think it brings a lot to what we’re trying to do and I think it’s also a statement from the Raiders in terms of the commitment to excellence. This is just another key ingredient to what we’re trying to accomplish.”

Seymour: “We’re going to welcome Carson in with open arms and have him be a part of the commitment to excellence here. I think this move was just another example of the Raiders’ commitment to excellence.”

On Jason Campbell:

Gannon: “I know this a part of the business but you’ve got to feel bad for Jason Campbell. I know he’s worked so hard at this. I thought he showed great leadership, along with yourself in the offseason, getting the players together to work out. What are your thoughts on what he’s going through right now?”

Seymour: “It has to be tough for him. Jason is a guy I have a ton of respect for. He’s one of the first guys into the building and one of the last to leave. He’s a total team player. Whatever is best for everybody, not necessarily what’s best for Jason, is what he’s all about. You can never have enough guys like that on your team. He obviously got the receivers together to get their timing down in the offseason. So Jason’s still going to be a leader for us and you never know when your number is going to be called in this business again.”

On the cost of acquiring Palmer:

Schein: “You’re a player. You want to win a Super Bowl right now, you want to make the playoffs right now. Do you care about the future necessarily in terms of trading all these draft picks? I’m asking you these questions because it’s part of the story here when you take a look at giving up all the draft picks for next year, when you look at Carson and Pryor and Campbell, you know, you guys don’t have a draft. You came from a place (New England) where they live for the Draft and they were successful stockpiling in the NFL Draft. Does that concern you?”

Seymour: “Well, in my eyes, back when I won the Super Bowl, we won the Super Bowl in 2004. It’s 2011 now so you can have as many Draft picks as you want to and say, ‘I have a good team,’ but at the end of the day, you know, the Packers are the only team that at the end of the day say, ‘Hey, we got it done.’ Obviously, you want to make smart business decisions in everything that you do. I mean, there was a lot of ‘Should they do it or shouldn’t they do it?’ in the process of picking me so it’s always going to be both sides of the spectrum. But at the end of the day it’s what that player does when he gets there that decides: Was it a good deal or wasn’t it a good deal? So, you know, it still remains to be seen. That chapter is still open.”

For all of the GM’s and numbers crunchers out there.

    NFL Draft Pick Value chart.

    1st round (2012)….22nd pick….780 points.
2nd round (2013)….22nd pick….360 points. (worth less because its in a “future year” but just trying to keep it simple.)
    Total points….1140 points

    1140 points equals a 1st round 13th pick in the 2012 draft.

Making an assumption that the Raiders will pick no higher than 22nd, this is a fair assessment of the actual price we are paying.

“We all felt that he bailed out on us,” Caldwell said of Palmer. “He was a leader in our locker room and we felt he just didn’t want to be with us. We took it kind of personal but we have a great guy in Andy Dalton that’s leading us and we put that in our past.”

Here’s something that begs to question. Its been said by numerous sources that Hue and Al worked on this since training camp, but had decided to wait it out until the offseason for the price to come down. Is it tampering if the player is retired? Could Hue have told Palmer all along he was going to be a Raider next year, and given him something resembling our playbook to work on, and JC’s injury just have expedited the inevitable?
    ===========================================
If they didn’t talk trade it’s okay not tampering. No public statements or meeting with agents. Remember, Palmer never filed retirement papers so the Raiders had to be very careful.

Raiders couldn’t NOT make the trade out of respect for JC’s feelings.

I feel real bad for JC too. He was a team player.

I can’t say he was totally unselfish though cuz I thought he intentionally played too cautious so as not to pad his interceptions.

You have to be a little risky to be a great QB. It may sound weird but I don’t think he was “risky” enough.

  54. inonewordraider Says:

I thought we had a shot at a sb with JC. I look at the AFC with JC and who’s better? NE Balt? By years end we would have had a good shot. But things happen and obviously Hue thinks Carson gives us a better shot than Boller and is worth the price. If he plays like Carson in his prime, which is unlikely but possible 3 years after the surgery, no doubt it’s worth it. But even if he has us in the playoffs next 3 out of the next 5 years it’s worth it in my opinion

what’s the problem guys? look at the #’s. palmer is still very good. almost 4000 yards last year. at 31, still in his prime. 5 good years from him. we’re talking a star qb here. draft picks? u mean the things that work out to various degrees about 50% of the time? so we would pick a guy in the lower 3rd of the 1st round the next 2 seasons. would that player be a star qb? would he be a star anything? maybe, maybe not. this is a sure thing. a known commodity. the offense will be top 5 now for sure. u guys still wanna “build for the future”? f*ck that! we’re going for it now! get excited. the journey continues sunday! the super bowl is in reach!

    1. Its a 1st and a conditional first rd, ( based on if the raiders go to the AFC championship game). If Carson gets us there, its worth it.

    2. Winning changes makes everything better. i.e. winning helps us resign our free agents, get other free agents and bring in better coaches.

    3. I dont buy the idea that teams are built on the draft..its BS, The patriots, Packers, Saints, and the colts ( w/manning) all are dominate, not bc of there drafting..its the QB

What I don’t support is some of you trashing a guy who really did what this team sorely needed after JaBust and got these young receivers started. The man deserves Raider Nation respect. Some of you guys are treating hime like aaron brooks or josh mccown.

Without JC these last 1.5 yrs, the team is still inept and we aren’t even in a position to dare to dream as big as we rightfully are now.

I dish out plenty of criticism, even to JC, but he deserves a little better than the comments I’ve read in this blog

Carson Palmer won’t be making ‘Soup type errors; securing the ball, pocket awareness, relative slow process speed (pre-snap, while play is on),etc.

However, Palmer will force the ball like he was pre 2005. And, as I read earlier, it seems his elbow has been more of a concern from jump street.

T.J. Houschmanzedah, who has been working out with Carson gives glowing reviews. He indicates Palmer has been throwing with both velocity & pace on all his throws; he indicates Palmer is almost back to the good old days.

The thing about a quarterback is given the proper circumstances they can play until, oh, say, 38, 39,. . .especially if you indigenously reside in that state. . .

Now, I don’t think Palmer can display the escapibility he possessed b4 his knee injury, but he is hardly a statue.

The running game should benefit exponentially. Far less 8 or 9 men in the box. Time to really go off. Potentially. Kevin Boss/TE position in general will benefit greatly as well. DHB? Potentially. . .

Hue called this the best trade in the history of football. Wow. Presser in progress!
One thing for sure; Carson Palmer will be a striking figure in silver & black, resplendant in every way.

But “The Trade” is only justified if the Raiders become perennial final four participants. On paper who has a better shot than the Raiders.

Man; if Al had passed b4 free agent money was doled out. . .Nnamdi here, the addition of Carson Palmer. . .dream team left coast. . .

Do Carson & Shane have some negotioating to do?

Remember the end of last year when Ochocinco & TO were out but Palmer seemed re-energized? He was spreading the ball out as he read the defense instead of catering to TO & Ochocinco.

Just think about that when the Raiders line up all that young speed/talent on Sundays. . .

We had a unique opportunity to seize on a player who’d “retired” and gave up, according to the draft value chart the 13th pick in the 2012 NFL draft.

I think Palmer will pretty much manage games the way Campbell is, but pick up open receivers and manage coverage looks a little better. The intangible is will he force balls due to overconfidence with the speed…he’s been out of football for 300 days…very slowly needs to be worked in…but Boller’s act makes me nervous.

This is the only way to look at the moves we’ve made any other way is very short sighted anyone saying Pryor would not be a 1st rndr really don’t know what they’re talking.

  244. Blackmamba_20 Says:

    Oakland Raiders 2012 draft picks:

1st round: Traded to Bengals for Carson Palmer

2nd round: Traded to Patriots for 2011 3rd- and 4th-rd picks

3rd round: Exercised in 2011 supplemental draft (Terrelle Pryor)

4th round: Traded to Redskins for Jason Campbell

    5th round: Still own pick

    6th round: Still own pick

7th round: Traded to Seahawks for Aaron Curry

Of course, the Raiders should get some relief. They are expected to be assigned two or three comp picks next spring. They will receive picks for the free-agent losses of players such as Nnamdi Asomugha, Zach Miller and Robert Gallery. The comp-pick process is a complicated formula based on play time and performance.

Still, it wouldn’t be a shock if the Raiders get the top comp pick of the 2012 draft. That would be No. 97, at the end of the third round.

My brother always tells me how he watched DHB in high school and how he knew he’d be a stud the more he learned about the game. Apparently he didn’t hardly play any peewee-little league, and was really focused on track. Just learned football in high school and is now coming around like someone who got on football later in life would. Am really proud to see the progress he’s made. What do you want answered? Yes the Raids need to see what they have, nothing is a sure bet in the NFL.

Logic says a few things though.
One of those things is statistically Palmer is an improvement. The second Hue is pretty excited about this, he about pee’d himself during the presser.

There that’s two positives that I didn’t need to watch to much tape to deduce.

BTW, that 2nd rounder to the Patriots was parlayed into Barksdale and Taiwan. Each has shown enough to say that at least one will pan out at 2nd round pick value, if not both. And we get them a year early, which is value add.

Soup has never thrown a fade or backshoulder :(

Look guys, Palmer could win games with his arm! We never had that option with Soup.

And Soup has been off all season, he has always just been managing to gather 100-200 yards. Many of which are screens or dump offs

People are going to lose to us in so many ways now, it makes me teary eyed thinking about it. Palmer brings us another level higher, and even if he just manages for now we upgraded a key position.

  321. JB Says:

1st & 10 on the Raider 20. The opponents look across the LOS and see Palmer under center, DHB, Ford, D-Wow & Schillins all lined up in a 4 wide out and DMac in the backfield. What do they do?

    A. call time out
    B. Drop all your backs to the 20 yard line
    C. Start back-peddling as quickly as possible

This is what opposing defenses will have to deal with. Alternately, they will also see Boss, Bush & Reece all viable weapons able to go all the way. This offense has the potential of being the scariest offense in the NFL. This offense will easily be equal to or better than any other one out there. They said Philly was the dream team. Who’d guess that it really was Oakland who had the dream team that just became a reality.

  322. autopalm77 Says:

    …..
On Tuesday morning, Shutdown Corner spoke with Travelle Gaines of Athletes Performance in Carson, Calif., where Palmer has been working out for months. As it turns out, Gaines — who also works with the Raiders in an advisory capacity — was the man the Raiders leaned on to find out what kind of football shape Palmer was in. “He looks great — he’s been throwing every day, and working with Ken O’Brien, the quarterbacks coach,” Gaines said. “He’s been throwing to his good buddy T.J. Houshmandzadeh(notes), working with Terrell Owens(notes) and Hank Baskett(notes). He looks great. I think he’ll be ready to go and step right in for the Raiders. He and Coach Jackson have worked together in the past, and they have a great relationship.”

Gaines has built up one of the more impressive NFL clienteles as a conditioning coach over the years, and the Raiders asked him to join their staff to play a similar role in the 2011 offseason. That paid dividends when the team starting doing due diligence on Palmer’s ability … and availability. “Coach Jackson leaned on me heavily through this process, and they definitely kept tabs on him,” Gaines said of Palmer.

Is the price of a 1 and a 2 (possibly 2 1’s) high.. Hell yeah it is but with a player coming out of college thats never played a down in the NFL you never know what youre going to get. JC was poised to get this team playoff bound and it was him that had to help alon the DHBs and Fords etc. Provided leadership and a role model on a team that SORELY needed one.

Just shows that life will throw some big time curves ones way. To go from leading a real resurgance for a storied franchise, playoffs and more and a new contract to NOTHING!

You all need a touch of class! I was honored to see JC live last week fight it out! Nothing but respect for the man!

You make a great point SnB. JCamp laid it on the line for us. His first slide looked just like all his other girly slides and I yelled out there he goes again with that bullcrap slide 4 yds short of the marker…. Somebody must have mentioned it to him on the sideline during the punt because his very next opportunity he goes in head first like a man and gets his clavicle cracked. Had he been the softee he was he would be our QB today and thus no Palmer.

Things happen for a reason and we now have Palmer. It’s just tough luck for JCamp. One play and we get two breaks: Campbell’s and Palmer.

Wasn’t originally doing cartwheels over the trade considering what we gave up for him, but I look at this team and the the only hole I see is at DT. The O-line has been addressed,, wr has been addressed,,cb has been addressed,, LB has been addressed,,Rb (obviously),,,I think we may be able to use our very few late rnd picks to find some quality DTs,,the Qb looks to be filled with Carson Palmer while T. Pryor learns behind him (he’s only 20). We may be set to make a serious run. That being said,,Carson Palmer doesn’t get a pass for quiting on his former team (Randy Moss) so I wanna see him man up in Oakland. I’m on board. Don’t let us down Carson. Remember,,,Carson, not JaCarson,,just Carson.

People are making too much of the long term cost of this. Very few first round draft picks pan out anyway. Always possibilities for trades between free agency and draft, where draft picks can be obtained. The only real long term effect is cap. But we need a QB. Even if Campbell was good (he’s not), we’d need someone now. Boller is OK but I don’t think he’s even in Palmer’s league. If we go with Boller we run the risk of letting this great season fall apart. This really had to be done. And the only true long term cost is cap space, but that can always be worked out, too. So just STFU and be happy. We’re in such a good position right now it’s not even funny.

Blackmamba, remember when people used to criticize Al’s decisions regarding long term contracts, cap, what have you, and people would say, “it’s his team. It’s not your money, it’s his. He can do what he wants”?

Well, now I’m saying the same thing regarding Mark Davis and this deal. It’s his money. Butt out.

    ———-

really in attempt to be a wise cracking smart a@@ your still making no sense to why you copied part of my post, which was a ESPN breakdown of next years pick i copy and pasted for this blogs review..Clown

Jr77,,he did quit though,,he did by not going back on the field. He basically took his ball and went home by saying I don’t wanna play for the Bengals anymore. Just think if he had done that with us,,he wouldve gotten ran outa Oakland. I understand him wanting outa there but he still had a job to do. But like Randy he’s been given a 2nd chance so I hope he makes the best of it. I think we both can agree on that. I still got much respect for JC, but I can’t wait to see if Palmer can bring us back into the playoffs.

    …………………………………………..

Thank God, Palmer wanted out of there.

If not, Boller would be our starter for the next two months.

I was listening to Jay Glazer talk about this some and I have to agree. While fans of teams that have solid QBs will look at this and scream we got robbed and paid too much fans of teams that don’t have a solid QB will say yeah you have to pay the price to get that guy on your team.

Is the price of a 1 and a 2 (possibly 2 1’s) high.. Hell yeah it is but with a player coming out of college thats never played a down in the NFL you never know what youre going to get. With Palmer who admittedly has had a couple rough seasons you at least have a gauge of the quality of player he is and how he will react while playing in the NFL.
    ===========================================

This post is exactly right. Getting Palmer for what we paid is a bargain. Paying what we paid for Jacarcass was a rip.

Soma, Norco, and 211 work well too.
    *****************************
Soma and Norco kind of f you up and cause drowsiness. However I used to take them for fun. 211 is pretty good stuff but that is what my garden is for.

Ambien and Percocet work well too.

    ______________________________________________________

    I totally agree!

right now we use the same tactic on draft picks as Al has done for years on the cap-problem…

we pay for todays problem next year! we pay today salaries next year, and now we get our players today with next years pick..

if it pans out, no problem! if it doesnt its just like picking a JaMarcus in 1st round.. so its no biggy, in fact I see it as we have an upper hand!

  400. RaiderRetribution Says:

Raiders are deep, young, and talented at every unit, now we have a franchise qb:

Oline, Vehldeer, Wisniewski, Satele, Campbell, Carlisle, Barnes, Barksdale, and Heyer

Dline; Seymour, Shaughnessy, Kelly, Houston, Bryant, Scott, Moss, Henderson

LB; McClain, Wimbley, (now) Curry, Groves and Blackstock

RB; McFadden, Bush, Reece, Jones, Cartwright, Tonga

WRs six deep, good hands, fast

    kicking game second to none

Last thing we need is a first round draft pick ,

    Only need a franchise qb,

    Now the Raiders have “it.”

  401. El Gato Negro Says:

#400 I agree. Al really built us a team to relish for quite a few years and Hue capped it off with the QB.

Yep, Many Props and Thanks to Jason Campbell. I will always be grateful to Campbell because he wanted to be the Raiders QB even when McNabb didn’t want to be our QB. Kudos to Jason…you will never be forgotten.

As much as I don’t like this trade and believe that Palmer won’t bring anything new to the table over Campbell I believe if the Raiders are to get the best out of him they need to start him right away against KC. It’s not like the Hue would be able to get him up to speed during the bye because of the new restrictions placed on bye week practices in the new CBA. Gotta get him a head start.

Al produced and left behind a three headed beast in Hue, Amy and Mark. Al knew what he was doing all along. Code Black.

    …………………………………………..

Now all we need is a good GM to work with them.

Man, that Cinci GM Mike Brown sure is a d!ck.

No wonder Palmer wanted out of that place.

He looks like the Bond villian Blofeld!
    _______________________________________________________

I think Amy was behind this deal! there were reports yesterday that Hue Jackson’s relationship with the bengals was to hinder of the deal, had any other been our HC it would have happened earlier! I really think sympathy for Al and good work from Amy pulled this deal home!
    *******************

LMN – Untrue. Hue is best of friends with Mr. Brown of the Bengals. Hue used to be an Asst. coach there and supposedly left on very good terms. If anything, it was the Bengals HC that would have tried to hold up the deal. I don’t believe he did either because his new QB is doing just fine and the picks they will get will really help them in the future.

I’m sure Amy was deeply involved in the contractual things that had to be worked out but that’s about her only involvement other than rubber stamping the deal.

  407. 2romes Says:

Al would have wanted the Raiders to bring in the best player available at the time to give the Raiders the best chances to win, now. That is what coach Hue Jackson did. Campbell did a reaaly good job for the team and I know he would want the best chances for the team to succeed while he cannot play.

Raiders lets get ready to win a ball game. Ausberry looked like he can do some serious damage to a defense if you dial up some plays for him. With all the other threats the Chiefs have to worry about Ausberry would be a second though for them.

I believe Boller can take on the Chiefs this week and win!! he needs to show he does add valve to this team in time of need. Boller, Boller, Boller!!! what a challange.

  408. RaiderTiv Says:

AH so what? we give up Draft picks….At least you know what your getting with Carson Palmer. Any time you lay down a 1st rounder it’s a huge gamble, And the gambles the Raiders have put down on Picks hasn’t had much of a return.
I think Trades are where it’s at these days…let some one else take the risks…buy what you know.
I am confident that Boller has the skillz to win it on Sunday…do I think he starts…my gut tells me no. He does have a chip on his shoulder…if he plays I hope he lights up the score board with the best game of his life.
THERE IS ONLY 1 NATION!! RAIDER NATION!! AND I AM PROUD TO BE A LIFE LONG RAIDER FAN!!

  409. intense19 Says:

All Veterans at any position know that there is no replacement for game-speed and game conditions. I’ll feel better about this whole thing once Palmer gets a few snaps under his belt.

And what’s this crap about other teams fans referring to themselves as the “Nation”. There is but one “Nation”, the original.

  410. cayman_raider Says:

The biggest reason this was a great trade……… carson will be the guy “grooming” pryor for the next 3 or 4 years. I’d prefer that any day over campbell, I like campbell but Pryor is essentially our 1st round pick next year. This team is young with the exception of a few leaders. We’re not even gonna blink on this trade.
