Report: Raiders close to getting Palmer

The Raiders are nearing agreement on a deal to acquire Carson Palmer from the Cincinnati Bengals in exchange for a first-round draft pick and a conditional draft pick, according to Jay Glazer of Fox Sports.

Palmer refused to play with the Bengals this season, sitting out rather than collect $11.5 million in salary. Jackson has a relationship with Palmer in that he was a wide receivers coach in Cincinnati the last time the Bengals went to the playoffs. The Raiders would be on the hook for $7.44 of Palmer’s remaining salary, considerably more than the $4.1 million Jason Campbell will make over the entire season.

The Twitter update doesn’t say if the first-round pick is from the 2012 draft. The Raiders have dealt away much of that draft, although they are due compensatory picks for lost free agents and can still trade existing players for more draft picks.

Do you guys understand QB play? Carson is a statue because he disects defenses and has a quick release. He doesn’t need to scramble because he gets rid of the ball.

The only thing keeping the Raiders from being a contender was a legitimate QB. They have that now. No more excuses. AFC title or bust.

To mortgage the future, I agree with that Rossee…but I believe we were contenders! We were 2 WTF games away from making the playoffs last year, why wouldn’t we have been this year?

If the Raiders were willing to give up this much, couldn’t they use this move to trade up and get Andrew Luck? Just a thought…
    ___________________

I’ve heard people say it would take 5 first rounders to move up just a couple of spots to pick Luck….and the team with the #1 pick still might not give him up for that.

I wish Luck was around in 2007, but that is just how the dice roll sometimes.

  • bcz24

You guys also do realize the 31 years old is NOT old for a QB.

  • JR77

Palmer has been working out in Southern California with former Jets quarterback Ken O’Brien. Palmer also has a strong relationship with Raiders head coach Hue Jackson, with the two men having worked together in Cincinnati from 2004-2006, when Jackson was the Bengals’ receivers coach

Palmer was willing to restructure his contract, which would pay him $6.9 million for the balance of this season, sources said. The Raiders have about $6 million left under the cap.

They key is Hue knows Palmer’s strenghts and weaknesses, Palmer looks to be in shape and healthy plus he restructured his contract and 6.9 mil isnt that bad.

  • bcz24

It cost Denver FOUR draft picks for Tebow, who by most accounts isn’t even an NFL caliber QB. Come on now

  • Raiders4eve

@SilverNBlackPA, compare Bulgar’s career number to Palmer and look who is better, question is Palmer at this stage of his career worth a first round pick let alone two first rounders? Anyone would say he is worth maybe a third at best a second.

  • mizza

Ok, a couple things. First, we absolutely overpaid for Palmer. I don’t think anyone can seriously dispute that. But the bottom line is that teams usually overpay for good players, whether it be with draft picks, or in contract price. Its ok to overpay for a really good player as long as they produce.

Second, we are still a run first team. Palmer isn’t going to change that. What we needed was a qb who is good enough to make a defense think twice before selling out on the run, and a qb who can take advantage when a d does sell out. Boller couldn’t do that. Palmer can. Our running backs are probably the ones happiest about this trade.

  • rossee

Lowdown. I’ve been a Raider probably before you were conceived. You all have delusions of grandeur. Even if Palmer has any arm strength left (he doesn’t) even if he had a modicum of mobility (he doesn’t) he was never ever a WINNER. Loved the Curry trade, why not go after Clausen who has some upside? This is nuts and even AL would not have done this.

Rivers has never been much better than Palmer and still isn’t Rivers turns the ball over way too much. Palmer is right there in the top 8 QB’s in this league. he just hasn’t been happy for some time. Put him in thr right situation and that guy has one of the mosst accurate arms in the game.

Right now it’s just a matter of teams that these QB’s are as to how goood they can be. I don’t think Palmer has e ever had a running game like this one. He will by years end be ready to take us anywhere we want to go.

  • bcz24

But 2 first rounders? Is that really the best deal we could negotiate?

If Carson performs well enough for that 2013 pick to become a 1st rounder then it is totally worth it!

Palmer is still young in QB years and has had some time now to get his head together. If his elbow is okay, which I’m sure will be looked at in his physical, he should have a solid four years left in him. This is such a huge upgrade from Campbell I’m giddy.

(Excitement) @!#% yeah! Can’t believe we are actually getting Palmer as a result of these unfortunate circumstances.

(Wishful thinking) Hope that 1st rounder is in 2013.

    (Crushing blow) Wait… 2 first rounders… no way…

    (Panic) !@#$!@#$!@#$!@#$!@#$@!#$!@#$!@#$

(Recovery) Ok, cool it, step back from the ledge…

    (Optimism) In Hue we trust…

(Rationalizing) Ya know, we draft better in the later rounds anyways.

(Believing it) Ok, so next year, who would we have taken in the 1st? We’re actually relatively strong and young at most positions anyways. Good move, Al, in focusing on resigning our players.

(Second Guessing) But 2 first rounders? Is that really the best deal we could negotiate?

(Affirming Decision) Ya know what, a lot of pundits said the Pats swindled us in the Seymour trade and it’s been one of the best moves for the team. In Hue we trust. Let’s do it. Why not us?

(Getting on board) Sip more Kool Aid and LOVE IT.

My guess is the conditional pick in 2013 turns form a 2nd to a 1st if Palmer takes them to the super bowl. Or something along those lines. I’d gladly give up two late 1st round picks for a franchise QB who takes us to the SB.

  • inonewordraider

Palmer I saw last year get’s us into the playoffs, Palmer in his prime get’s us into at least 1 superbowl

    Dakota what is Palmers class????

Last time I saw him play he missed soem open targets and oh yeah…quit on his team!!!!

He wanted Ocho to stay – managment did it.
He wanted TO – management got him.

So what does he do? Demand a trade and quit.

Palmer’s play has not been good since he blew out his knee. Point blank! Palmer should get mad at Palmer. His deep ball use to money after his knee it was average.

No way I give up a first for this guy when we don’t even have a first.

If it was me I would keep my first round pick. Palmer is not worth a first round pick.

Plus, we have no idea if Pryor is our QB of the future. What do we do if Palmer is OK. Do we sign him agian next year and Campbell? How are we going to pay Palmer more than Campbell. Also, isnt Palmer a free agent next year?
    ++++++++++

No no no, this move ends Campbell in Oakland….obviously….as Jackson would say. And Palmer is under contract through 2014, so we don’t have to worry about him leaving like we had to worry about Seymour.

Campbell has never been in Palmer’s class, not even close.

I know. Maybe on his death bed AL was mumbling to Hue go get Palmer, I want Palmer. He really meant I want to speak to Arnie before I leave this earth. This is not good people.

  • qodrn

If anyone cares, John Madden says Palmer is most likely the best available QB and was really very good. He says that to reach the playoffs, the Raiders needed a QB and with Campbell down, they had this limited window to grab someone. Madden also says the Raiders are a playoff caliber team this year, so it makes sense to keep the thing going at this point.

Palmer should have more a team here to work with, and Hue knows him. I am guessing we will see Boller on Sunday and then Palmer.

We really can’t use Lechler as the backup.
