4th quarter: Raiders 27, Vikings 21
By Steve Corkran
Sunday, November 20th, 2011 at 1:11 pm in Oakland Raiders.
The Raiders survived a brief scare when cornerback Stanford Routt intercepted Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder in the end zone midway through the quarter to snuff out a scoring threat.
The Raiders led 27-14 at the time, but they were reeling from a slew of penalties and blown coverages. The Vikings marched to the Raiders’ 5, where Ponder attempted a pass into tight coverage.
Routt stepped in front of a receiver, hauled in the pass and got down both feet for the impressive interception. It marked the fourth Vikings turnover.
Things got a tad more interesting a short time later, when Raiders running back Michael Bush fumbled and the Vikings recovered at the Raiders 38.
Ponder connected on back-to-back passes for a touchdown that cut the lead to 27-21 with 5 minutes, 8 seconds left.
The Raiders failed to run out the clock, which gave the Vikings one more shot with 3:01 left. The Vikings last-gasp drive ended with strong safety Tyvon Branch breaking up a pass for wide receiver Percy Harvin on fourth-and-eight.

The win is good, but Hue is still showing he isn’t head coach material. This team fails to adjust in the second half week in and week out.
And who the fk calls a timeout with one minute left when you have the ball, you’re winning, and the other team can’t stop the clock? How is he a head coach in this league? Just mind boggling.

That piling on penalty epitomizes what’s wrong with the Raiders.

Jared Veldheer was pretty good today. No sack for Allen and one iffy holding call. Good draft Al.
November 20th, 2011 at 1:31 pm
The team is still learning how to close out games and stomp on a teams throat.
2nd half play was terrible, but I thought the perception of the half was amplified by that uncharacteristic fumble by Bush.
I’ll look at it this way: The team is young and despite the ugly win, they took a step forward by winning a game they were expected to win. Not something the Raiders have been able to do for a long time. Also, they won when they were in a favorable position standings wise.
There are negatives all over the place for this game, but also some nice positives.
Hope DHB will be okay. Scary hit.

I’ll be in the black hole for next weeks game. We will take the Bears. Mark it down.
November 20th, 2011 at 1:36 pm
The truth is that the raiders are a flawed team (incosistent) with injuries, going trough a QB change. Still won, but neverless it was a tight game. Shouldnt been like that. This needed to be a blowout after halftime. Vikings D can play. I think if Peterson wouldnt gone out, this is a diferent result. Palmer is good, but not mobile enough. This team needs McFadden back to be great.

JT not many teams can lose their franchise player, QB, starting C, a starting DE, a starting CB and 2nd string QB, not to mention most of their WR’s banged up (at one time or another) most of the year.
Huff and Mitchell have also missed a lot of time.

That is a good point. DMAC is great for breaking a team’s back. DMoore got double covered today and without Jacoby or DMAC we don’t have a game breaker.
I will give Hue some props for today…this was on the players, just horrible play execution in the 2nd half. He’s got material to continue to improve the team and a win. HE’s also gotten us 2-2 since DMAC, Jacoby and JC went down and we’re poised to make some noise when DMAC gets back.Thought we should be 3-1, but without a game breaker and a new QB that may be a pipe dream.
Still 4-1 on the road. 2-2 with a depleted roster at skill positions DMAC, JC, Jacoby, Satele, Shonasty, McClain (1 game), Huff, Jano…
For a 1st time HC, with the owner passing, having to take care of all of this….
I think Hue is close (A D Coordinator away) from fielding a dominant team. Right now with all the injuries, obstacles, and close loss (Buff) he’s done a good job.
Now we’ll see what he comes up with to solve the 2nd half getting out scored.
Not Satisfied at all though.
November 20th, 2011 at 1:54 pm

November 20th, 2011 at 1:55 pm
I can’t argue the ugly nature of the win, but hey, this is the NFL. Every win is priceless.
The Raiders are 6-4 heading into late November and the best player on the team could be back soon.
Not happy with the 2nd half play, but all things considered, I’m happy with the position the Raiders have put themselves into.
November 20th, 2011 at 1:56 pm
The players and coaches know everything went their way with the exception of some calls, and still couldn’t put away a bad team.
Hopefully they realize a performance like this against even a mediocre NFL will result in a loss in almost every case.
We need to tighten some things up and get some guys back from injuries.

There is one difference. We aren’t sure if they will win today. We KNEW they were going to win then. I think the playcalling needs to continue in the 2nd half they way it ended in the 1st half. Let’s get McFadden back next Sunday, please!
November 20th, 2011 at 1:58 pm
Refs killing us, hit by Aaron Curry is called football. Time out wasn’t an issue, he should take the 5 yard delay penalty, but Lechler needs to punt it thru the endzone. Branch should not have been in man coverage on the 4th and 8 against Harvin. Def Coord is problem, not Hue.
November 20th, 2011 at 1:58 pm
like i said 4th win this year on the road,
If they played flawless then some of you smucks would have nothing to piss an moan about all week.. so everyones a winner.
Im off to get raider drunk !!
November 20th, 2011 at 1:59 pm
A win is a win. Really relieved to get out of there with this one. Hope DHB is OK.
I am really disappointed for the officials though. It’s clear they did everything they possibly could to hand them this game. Particularly early when it was close and again late once it was clear the Vikings might have some hope. They were amazing on 3rd down for Minny today. Time and again they were there to bail out the Viqueens with unbelievable flags.
November 20th, 2011 at 2:00 pm
Road Victory that keeps us solely on top of the division…I’ll take it no matter how ugly…Hue you got 6 more weeks to clean those penalties up if you want a post season win.

While Bush came through with a running game, he did get careless with 1 fumble and he still can’t pass block. He didn’t totally whiff like last week. Instead, he blocked today as though he were from the Little Sisters of the Poor. Palmer got sacked as a result of that unacceptable effort.

I’ve gotta see that. I was going nuts watching that game.
I take offense to the comparrison to WWE officiating though. Dangerous Danny Davis, Dave Hepner and his eveil twin don’t deserve to be lumped in with the schuysters that were out on the field in Minnesota today.

Chargers look like they came to play today. Thought they were going to get rolled. I still expect Chi to win, but SD is putting up a decent fight so far. They probably know it’s slipping away if they don’t win today. Don’t know they have enough weapons to do much about it though.

Been a fan since the late 60s myself. I think lefty12 is remembering great teams like the Steelers being in it to the last minute against great Raider teams. Iit wasn’t always a Raider habit to let 2-7 teams hang until the last minutes of a game after putting the Raider boot on an opponent’s neck at half-time. This team has talent but hasn’t yet developed the attitude to let them run with the big boys. You can skate on the Vikings today, but you just can’t let the good teams back into games with stupid penalties, bonehead play, and waaayyy toooo conservative of play calling in the second half.

Luck appears better suited for a team with a strong running game and a defense…but he is tough…put him with Adrian Peterson and that is a playoff bound team.

Chicago coach almost outsmarted himself. Called timeout at the last second as the kicker missed badly, and then on his second chance he hit the ball well and barely missed.

Silly I know Niners are just getting lucky every week , u need to to say Niners are just not a good team , we know that already ..

Tebow on the Vikings would be dangerous. Tebow, Harvin, and Peterson could do some damage.

Veldheer is legit, i even saw some good things from Khalif barnes,
Two Tight Ends balling out there,
Chaz is a good red zone traget..
Taiwan and Moor had a nice return each..
Palmer did what was required, and we won !!

I remember when cutler was with dungver, the best way to contain him was to keep him in the pocket. When he was out of the pocket, rolling out, he would do damage.
Cutler has the ability to make some throws off his back foot and forte is good.
Their wrs dont scare me BUT we must have a plan for D HESTER on returns
November 20th, 2011 at 2:52 pm
Niners need to fire Harbaugh , can’t score TD after mike singletarys D gave them like 10 possessions inside the enemy territory .. Wasn’t ge suppose to b some offense genius ? I see Niners fate much like what happened to KC chiefs last year in the wildcats game
November 20th, 2011 at 2:53 pm

November 20th, 2011 at 2:54 pm
not a great game, but a Win is a WIn. No one remembers exactly how we won 8 games last year, but that we won 8 games last year.
Hue called the game conservatively, which is fine with me, because truth be told, if he called the game the same way as the Broncos game, we would have won.
The raiders are better then they’ve been in awhile, but the defense and offense lacks an identity. Esp without DMAC.
We need to get healthy at WR. and CB
Best players were Valdeer and Branch

I’m sure some of you have been interested in where my name comes from. Albert Bigelow Paine was a contemporary of Mark Twain. He could never live up to Twain’s genius. It is sort of fitting because I will always be second in command to the Blog King, MR. For your education, I present the biography of Albert Bigelow Paine:
Paine, Albert Bigelow (10 July 1861-9 Apr. 1937), author and Mark Twain’s literary executor, was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts, the fifth child of Samuel Estabrook Paine, a Vermont storekeeper, and Mercy Coval Kirby. The Paine family soon moved to Xenia, Illinois, where Paine attended school and worked in the village store. At twenty he traveled to St. Louis and learned photography. For ten years he sold photographic supplies in Fort Scott, Kansas. In 1885 he married Wilhelmina Schultz. The sale of a story to Richard Harding Davis at Harper’s Weekly led to his move to New York City and the full-time pursuit of a writing career.
Paine’s direction as a writer was at first uncertain. He wrote undistinguished verse as well as a Hawthornian romance, The Mystery of Evelin Delorme (1894), and a Poe-like tale of adventure at the South Pole, The Great White Way (1901). The Bread Line: A Story of a Paper (1900), an early and significant piece of near autobiography, concerns the attempts made by four New York “bohemian” journalists to succeed in the crassly corporate, market-driven world of magazines. The book also portrays the writers’ increasing anxieties about the city’s growing underclass.
From 1899 to 1909 Paine served as an editor of St. Nicholas, a prestigious children’s magazine. He wrote a number of successful works for this audience, including the many “Hollow Tree” stories and books. After his first marriage had ended, Paine married Dora Locey in 1892; they had four children–all girls. The family’s early adventures in search of the perfect home were detailed in three explicitly autobiographical works: The Van Dwellers (1901), The Commuters (1904), and Dwellers in Arcady (1919). The books retain interest for their depiction of middle-class, turn-of-the-century ideals of, respectively, city, suburban, and Connecticut country life. The volumes are increasingly sentimental, but each also documents Paine’s condescension toward an unending series of stereotyped laborers upon whom he depends in order to set up house, including professional movers, drunken Irish janitors, female house servants who eat too much, lazy black boys and cleaning ladies, “unskilled and unfaithful” ethnic carpenters, and masons who abscond with cash advances. “Work was my problem,” Paine wrote–”somebody to do it.”
Much of Paine’s later work fell under the shadow of Mark Twain. He edited many volumes of Twain’s writings, and wrote the three-volume Mark Twain: A Biography (1912). The biography remains his most-read work, and it is a legitimate classic of its genre, deeply colored by Paine’s unusual, personal relationship with its subject. Paine was twenty-six years Twain’s junior but by the time their collaboration began in 1906 he was already a well-known author because of his Thomas Nast: His Period and His Pictures (1904). Paine called the older man “Mr. Clemens.” He moved his family into Twain’s home, tucked Twain into bed at night and read to him, and managed many general family matters as a kind of majordomo. Paine planned and played the music at the funeral of Jean Clemens, Twain’s daughter; he also tended Twain in his final illness, made his funeral arrangements and then put pen to paper. Paine’s portraits of Twain are the defining moments in the popular conception of the man. Paine wrote that the youthful Twain was a “tender-hearted, romantic, devil-may-care lad, loathing application and longing only for freedom,” and that as an adult Twain “had a natural instinct for the right, but, right or wrong, he was for the underdog.”
Some of Paine’s work as Twain’s literary executor has been criticized in recent years. His composite and, in places, fabricated text for Twain’s The Mysterious Stranger, A Romance (1916) has been called an “editorial fraud” in which Paine “secretly tried to fill Mark Twain’s shoes.” Shortly after Twain’s death, Paine and Clara Clemens prevented publication of a scathing satire on bureaucratic enterprise, “The International Lighting Trust” (1909), that Twain already had sent to his publisher. On the other hand, Paine deserves high marks for his edition of Twain’s Mark Twain’s Autobiography (2 vols., 1924), which, unlike later presentations of these materials, stuck closely to Twain’s original intentions.
The experience of four years with Twain affected much of Paine’s later writing. Many of his subsequent works are in the realm of homage or pastiche, in which Twain’s complex, ambivalent responses to his world are greatly simplified. Paine followed Twain’s The Innocents Abroad (1869) with The Ship-Dwellers: A Story of a Happy Cruise (1910), in which he attempted to “follow the track” of Twain by making painfully imitative wisecracks about the group of “reprobates” with whom he sails. Twain had written of the corporate boss and community outlaw Slade in Roughing It (1872); Paine responded with a book about a far less ambiguous, rough-and-tumble lawman who also brought order to the frontier in Captain Bill McDonald, Texas Ranger: A Story of Frontier Reform (1909). And Paine tried to trump Twain in the line of Joan of Arc studies with his Joan of Arc, Maid of France (2 vols., 1925). He achieved a measure of success in this case, and the French government made Paine a chevalier in the Legion of Honor in recognition of his scholarship. In both Joan and Life and Lillian Gish (1932), Paine’s worship of pure little girls closely followed that of his mentor into questionable territory. Though Gish was an adult film star, for example, Paine’s fascination was with her ability to freeze time–to portray a version of her former “exquisite,” childlike, and “Christ-like beauty of innocence, of sinlessness.”
Paine’s sentimental, romantic sensibility was counterbalanced in two privately contracted biographies celebrating individuals who consolidated American business enterprise. George Fisher Baker (1920) profiled one of the most powerful of American bankers, and Paine’s biography of Theodore N. Vail, In One Man’s Life (1921), applauded the “great work” and leadership abilities of the American Telephone & Telegraph executive who sought to “organize a grand telephonic system” through long-wire extensions between cities.
Paine’s favorite among his own books was Jan the Romantic (1928), a bildungsroman about a budding writer of mixed British and French descent making his way between the early part of the century and the end of World War I. Jan’s nature propels him gypsy-like across France with a wealthy patron who speaks for Paine when he says that modern times “are worse, less fine spiritually. With all our resources we cannot today build a cathedral. Mechanical growth means spiritual decline: That is axiomatic. We are on the down grade.” It is a deeply felt, antimodernist book, and similar to much of his fiction and autobiography in its search for a natural place sealed off from the “greed and struggle” of modern life.
Paine served for many years on the Pulitzer Prize Committee. His last major work consisted of editing Mark Twain’s Notebook and writing The Family Mark Twain, both published in 1935. Paine died in New Smyrna, Florida, en route to his home in New York.
Bibliography
Paine’s other important works as an editor of Twain are Mark Twain’s Speeches (1910); Mark Twain’s Letters (2 vols., 1917); Moments with Mark Twain (1920), a selection of Paine’s favorite passages from Twain; and Europe and Elsewhere (1923), a collection of miscellaneous pieces. All of this editorial work has been or will be superseded by the University of California editions of Twain’s writing. After Paine’s death, some of his works for children were collected in The Hollow Tree and the Deep Woods Book (1938) and The Hollow Tree Snowed-In Book (1938).
No major article on Paine exists, and a number of short pieces, including his New York Times obituary (10 Apr. 1937), contain errors about his work. For material on Paine as an editor of Twain, see William M. Gibson’s introduction to Mark Twain’s The Mysterious Stranger (1969) and John S. Tuckey’s introduction to Mark Twain’s “The International Lighting Trust,” Fables of Man, ed. John S. Tuckey (1972).

Can we win a game this season where our defense doesn’t have to hold off the opponent in the last two minutes. Think about it. That’s happening almost every game.
Wk 1: Dominated Donkeys. Still came down to Denver having a chance late in the 4th.
Wk 2: Blew huge lead and lost game on Buff’s last game with about 15 seconds remaining.
Wk 3: Had a two-score lead but got the ball back on our 1 after Sanchez was ruled down on our 1 after a replay reversal. NYJ would’ve had plenty of time to try to execute an onside kick.
Wk 5: Emotional win over Houston. Huff picks off Schaub in the end zone on the final play.
Wk 6: Dominated Browns throughout. Somehow they still have the ball with a chance to tie inside of the last 2 minutes. D gets the job done in the end … again.
Wk 10: Led 17-3 at halftime. Manhandled SD most of the way. Chargers still had the ball with more than one minute left and the chance to push it to overtime.
Wk 11: Dominated Vikings. Led 24-3 at one point. Won turnover battle by a wide margin. Minnesota still has the ball and a chance to win multiple times within the last 5 minutes.
Can’t keep doing this. Not only is it damaging my heart, but it’s going to bite us bigtime here if we don’t learn how to put teams away when we’ve got these double-digit second half leads.

Crabtree. LMAO. Guy has journeyman skills and a diva attitude.
I didn’t like the DHB pick at all when we made it. Wanted Maclin or Maualuga. Right now, I’ll take DHB over Crabtree. Crabtree has better hands and ball skills. DHB is far more explosive and a much harder worker. DHB’s upside is much, much higher.

The reason the Raiders players are so freagin stupid is because Hue Jackson is an idiot too. Our second to last posession in the 4th Q why throw the ball and stop the clock every play? If you are ahead in the 4th q and you have the ball, run it and kill the clock. Instead, we give up sacks and throw incompletions. Every player who goes an entire game without committing a stupid penalty should be rewarded somehow. Maybe Amy Trask can figure something out there.

Can you get the niners to bend over and take one in Madden?
November 20th, 2011 at 3:29 pm
- A win is a win, but the second half was straight ugly. I don’t mind Hue being conservative in 2nd half in the dome against a scary pass rush. Raiders just killed themselves, block fg and fumble. Was totally the Cleveland game.
– We need DMac/Ford back in a big way. We need their explosion.
– Perfect tackle on TE Curry. F the refs.
– 4-1 on the road…nice.
– Raiders defense is physical and can dominate up front at times, but damn Chuck B can’t you coach these guys to contain a mobile QB? DE’s always lose containment.
– Must play full 60 against Chicago and bring it. Forte, Cutler, Peppers, Urlacher, Hester, Briggs…Bears got players. Raiders do to, time to prove they are a playoff team.
One Nation Baby…

Sweet! Put the seahawks and broncos on the ‘reach around’ team list too.
November 20th, 2011 at 3:34 pm
Watching my Niners have a sloppy half, then regroup, and come back out a well oiled machine is why I love this game. ‘Arizona is just a kid spectating in a man’s game. Classy all the way. Head coach, the qb, the team, the organization. Just calling it as I see it.
Go Niners.
