Report: Cutler has broken thumb

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Sunday, November 20th, 2011 at 6:49 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Still worked up over a few too many penalties? Relax. Things keep breaking right for the Raiders.

It looks like Jay Cutler, the quarterback for the Chicago Bears and the Raiders next opponent, may have a broken thumb on his throwing hand.

That’s what Profootballtalk.com, via Jay Glazer, is reporting. Can’t remember the last time Glazer had an outright whiff on a story.

Cutler is the only Bears quarterback to throw a pass this year. His backup is four-year veteran Caleb Hanie.

UPDATE: The Chicago Tribune is reporting Cutler will be out six to eight weeks.

I think McClain had a bad game. He is way inconsistant. One day he shows up, and sometimes you forget he even on the field.

Score one for the BIG dogg!

One thing I have to give him credit for is simply being in the right place. Nice football IQ.

Makes MM34 look like a clown out there. I can see why he is getting reps over MM34.

  • YoungAmerican

Could anyone have predicted that Matt Giordano would lead the team in INTs through ten games?

McClain is still really struggling with his assignments. He’d put in a solid effort in each of the last two games, but this week just looked lost. He’s going to have to get it together if this team is going to finish strong.

As I’d predicted before the game, the Raiders once again struggled sealing the edge against a mobile QB. Gotta stop giving up those cheap yards.

Routt has now been beaten for more TDs this season than Asomugha had been in the last three years combined. BUT that INT in the 4th quarter was a bigger play than any play Nnamdi made in his entire Raider career.

Khalif Barnes, Cooper Carlisle and Samson Satele got worked over pretty regularly yesterday. The Vikings are good at rushing the passer, for sure, but when Veldheer is doing such a great job of neutralizing Allen you can’t let guys like Robison, Griffin and Greenway run around unimpeded. Will need to step it up against the Bears with Briggs, Urlacher, Idonije… they’ve also been moving Peppers around with great success.

Have to wonder what the Raider offense is going to look like without Ford and DHB next week. Chaz, Moore, Housh, and Murphy need big games against a hot-and-cold Bears secondary (who happen to be coming off two big weeks).

Palmer, Bush, Veldheer, DHB, and Giordano all deserve game balls.

So with Taiwan Jones injured, I expect us to sign a RB this week.

Do we have one on the practice squad?

a curry – love the physical way he plays.
robeast – called a nice game as the qb of the d
l sheppard – nice tackles and tipped ball (one of these days he is going to catch one of those and house it)

btw…coach hugeaxe not speaking with woodchuck kangaroohands? defense not making adjustments at half?

coach hugeaxe is not giving up his playbook in the 2nd half with a big lead…sometimes too close for comfort, but he has a plan…lets roll with it nation!

  • CanuckRaider

Just remembered that beautiful pass Carson zipped over the under coverage on a deep out. Thing of beauty that.

  • http://www.raiderettes.com Sullivan44

Hue inherited one of the most dysfunctional football organizations in the history of American sports. To be 6-4 in his first season as head coach and defacto GM, the same record our last Super Bowl team had at this point of the season, is quite remarkable. And if you notice, most of our flaws are the same flaws we had in the dysfunctional years before Hue ever arrived.

  • DMAC

Branch has quietly been playing a nice season.
Glad to see him throw last season out the window. Dude is ballin this year.

  • raiderinparadise

Nic Grisby …. on practice squad is a RB from Uof Arizona, but they were playing with the idea of converting him to DB.

Fargas maybe? only if he was at USC while Hue was?

I would think the logical move would be to see if any RB from Hue’s raven/bengal days are free agents.

I think he’s hit and miss, J. Sometimes he’s negated way too easily. I’m thinking of the AP TD. Take a look at that play and let me know what you think.

That being said, I’d much rather have him in the lineup than out of it. Defense is better when he’s in there. No question.

  • CanuckRaider

#631: Nice to have safeties who can actually play the game.

  • CanuckRaider

Caleb has more experience than Ponder but the formula will be the same against the Bears…Shut down Forte early and make them throw. We’ll have to pass more on offense though and really mix it up well.

  • Chris in NY

Love Hue but two things he got away with yesterday I did not like were:

    1) Back-to-back QB sneaks by Palmer at the end of the first half. Not only is Palmer not very good at that and not only is there a significant injury risk for him in that situation — but the clock would’ve likely run out if he doesn’t score on that 2nd attempt. It worked (Bush basically lowered his shoulder and bulldozed him in) but that’s a terrible risk/reward ratio on a play like that.

    2) The new guy, can’t recall his name, was inserted for kickoff returns even though he just joined the team, has a horrible history of fumbling and at the time he went in we were sitting on a decent-sized lead where ball security is much more important than a feint chance of him breaking a long one.

Again, love Hue. Just a couple of things we were lucky didn’t blow up in our face yesterday.

  • DMAC

I guess we can thank Huffy for taking out AP, but someone needs to teach this kid how to tackle. You guys notice how he tackles so high. He just jumps on defenders backs and tries to drag them down.

Lito please school him on some much needed tackling lessons.

  • inonewordraider

-Q: Can you talk about the job Veldheer did vs. Jared Allen?

-PALMER: I just asked him if he realized what he did today. I don’t think it’s hit him. Not many guys play that well against that guy. And he didn’t have any help, either.

We came into the gameplan and said, look, you’re going to be one-on-one vs. Jared. Jared vs. Jared. We’re not going to put a tight end on your side and help double-team… you’re good enough to do it.

The coaches asked him if he was up to the challenge, and he said yeah. He was, obviously.

-Q: So you’re noticing during the game that Allen wasn’t getting to you?

-PALMER: I know where No. 69 is at all times. And I didn’t notice him hardly at all. That’s a very good player, but our Jared’s a very good player.

My problem with the play calling in the second half was not the runnung but when Hue did call a pass, he should have gone with short stuff to get the ball out quicker. The vikings were bringing it and Palmer just didn’t have time for what Hue was calling.

    ____
Great point. For what ever reason the Raider don’t have any 3 step and out stuff.

    ——————————————————-

    I see your point.

I think for me, it’s more about what our defense looks like when McClain is not on the field. The way he has out guys lined up in the right position to be specific.

On top of that, the guy is playing on 2 bad wheels, so I tend to cut him some slack on the plays where he looks a step slow.

    ———–

Yup. Was wondering why he wasn’t in there bouncing it out or catching in the flats, cause they were leaving that wide open for us. Played us pretty well between the tackles.

Then I saw after the game, he didn’t finish, which explains a lot.
