Raiders game sold out _ sixth in a row
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, November 24th, 2011 at 12:15 pm in Oakland Raiders.
The Raiders game will be on local television for the sixth consectutive game, with the club announcing a sellout Thursday.
Status quo on injury front, according to coach Hue Jackson. Expecting it will be much like Minnesota, utlizing Richard Seymour on third downs if he’s good to go.
Area of most concern is wide receiver, although Darrius Heyward-Bey, in Jackson’s words, “ran around” during practice. Jacoby Ford is out of his protective boot, but hasn’t practice. Denarius Moore was a spectator Thursday as well with a foot injury.
T.J. Housmandzadeh returned to practice the day after his wife had a baby, giving the Raiders another body at practice to go along with Chaz Schiens, Louis Muprhy and practice squad player Eddie McGee.
Have a happy Thanksgiving.

Hey Jer, you left this out of your last post:
Sebastian Janikowski – K – Raiders Sebastian Janikowski (hamstring) is no longer listed on the Raiders’ injury report.
Coach Hue Jackson believes Janikowski has turned the corner with his hamstring strain.

The Raiders capable of beating the Bears, but if the team can’t score in the 4th quarter, we’re losing this one. It won’t be an easy game. It’ll either be close or we’ll be blown out. But Carson Palmer is the real deal and he’s only going to get better and better each week, I have hope.
Happy Thanksgiving all!

Palmer played eight years for the Bengals and never got close to a Super Bowl, or ever had a team capable of going to the promise land. Palmer clearly sees that he’s on a team capable of winning in the promise land, it’s just a matter of getting all the cylinders humming in place and in rhythum. If some of our injured players of mass destruction can get healthy, the promise land is obtainable…this year and the next and the next.
Have a super, awesome turkey day.

Howie Long needs to step up to the plate, he needs to say that the Raiders will prevail over the Bears and that he expects them to win their division and play deep into the playoffs. He’s been on the silent side of things lately. Don’t be afraid Howie, we will win.

November 24th, 2011 at 6:47 pm
It must be nice to commit numerous fouls on every play and not have to worry about getting them being called.Whiner grab facemasks, false start, hold, and commit offensive pass interference and it is never called.
November 24th, 2011 at 6:52 pm
Preach,Armond, preach.BTW,to those of you saying it is best if the whiners win, think again.A whiner loss gives GB some breathing room for home field in the play-offs.In case you’ve forgotten,we have to play GB.Would rather they have a couple game lead going into our game.
November 24th, 2011 at 6:55 pm
I’m looking beyond regular season games.
I would rather the Ravens lose and end up with a better record than them and play them in Oakland instead of Baltimore in the playoffs.
Packers are going to be going balls to the wall every game no matter what, with the perfect season and history on the line.
November 24th, 2011 at 6:56 pm
It would be nice if those of you who look at a whiners win as almost being as good as a Raider win,put your personal feelings aside and root for what is best for the Raiders-a whiner loss.
November 24th, 2011 at 6:59 pm
There is zero rationale as to how the 49ers losing helps the Raiders.
None what-so-ever.
You think that if the Packers have a 2 game lead with 4 games to play, they are going to be letting up?
Your smarty than that Lefty!!!!
November 24th, 2011 at 7:01 pm
Let’s see…..
-If the Ravens lose and the Raiders win, depending on tie-breakers we could be the #2 seed and be in position for A GREATLY NEEDED BYE.
or….
-If the Ravens win, MAYBE, the Packers won’t play as hard against us in two weeks.
Talk about hoping over a 20 dollar bill to grab the 5!!
November 24th, 2011 at 7:04 pm
They are more than likely to have a mental letdown with a couple game lead whether they want it or not.Besides,it is what the coaches do,not necessarily the players. Most coaches would admit it is sometimes better to lose one during the season than go into the tournament undefeated.
November 24th, 2011 at 7:12 pm
Thinking we will get home field throughout the playoffs,if we make them, and the #1 seed is unrealistic.Phuck the whiners.
November 24th, 2011 at 7:12 pm
Hey I ain’t telling you what to do. You want to root for the Ravens tonight, knock yourself out.
I just don’t see the logic in thinking a 49ers loss is more beneficial than a loss for a team we are jockeying for playoff seeding right now.
We need as many losses as possible for the Texans, Steelers, Ravens, Patriots and Broncos, and I could care less who they are playing and who I have to root for to help the Raiders playoff position.
November 24th, 2011 at 7:14 pm
Not getting the #1 seed, because that will go to the Pats probably, and they hold the tie-breaker over us.
But we have the tie-breaker over the Texans, and I think we could very realistically get the #2 seed.
The difference between the #2 seed and #3 OR #4 seed is HUUUUUUGE.
November 24th, 2011 at 7:15 pm
lefty dont let jfb fool u with his unreasonable reasonable thinking. we hate the niners and thats that. i aint losin sleep if the niners win but im not rooting for them either. i really dont give a damn about this game. im more excited about watchin the same seinfeld reruns ive seen a million times. they have my attention for 15 minutes and then its ktvu channel 2 time.
November 24th, 2011 at 7:23 pm

The Whiners got exposed in this game. They got their asses kicked. In their last 7 wins the teams they beat had a combined total of 31 wins. The two good teams (Detroit and NYG) basically were in positions to win those games. This is the lst time in a long time the whiners faced a team that came out ready to fight and they got kicked.

That Philly game and that Detroit game should have been losses.

I’m a Raider fan, but that’s just myopic. Just heard John Harbaugh post-game interview, he said “They (niners) have a chance to get to the Super Bowl”. They are at another level, they are the inverse of us, they play sound, don’t beat themselves and understand the scheme. We play loose, beat ourselves and misread due to our youth and patchworked line-up. The only thing you can really say is we have some talent (DMC), (Ford), but they just can’t stay on the field. Niners are a tough, fundamentally sound run game, and they have heart – will the Raiders guys play hurt as Gore did.
Look, i’m straight Raider Nation, but the Niners are good (whatever garbage about their weak division) was irrelevant.

i’m jealous , too. I’m really hoping Reggie McKenzie can come in, and try to convince or order Hue to really take a long look at developing the defensive side of our game, be it 3-4 conversion or an overhaul of the system and a look at some key pieces to turn it around. Its a roller coaster every week.

Me too. Just a symphony of destruction and mayhem. Defense the way it ought to be.
I wish we had ALL of that. The only thing you can say is, lately, opposing teams have had players leave the game (McNeil-San Diego, A.P. – Minnesota, they broke Sanchez nose), but they need that fire.

Coming into this week our sack totals were almost identical to theirs. Our pass defense is arguably just as good as theirs. What separates them and us is their run defense is very good our isn’t. We drafted a guy #8 overall to improve that issue. He hasn’t. In fact DeAngleo Hall has more tackles. And last time I looked Ray Lewis didn’t play today. Oh and by the way, the other players voted Tommie Kelly Defensive MVP of the team last year. Keep trying tho, maybe you might get something right.

We cannot let Forte run all over us. Caleb Hanie can play. He is athletic and should be able to make plays. But I would put our pass defense against him and his corp. But we cannot let Forte and Devon Hester tear us up. That would be criminal.

The fact remains, both the Niners and Ravens have better defenses than ours. Tommy Kelly is a defensive stud, but the linebacking isn’t remotely as good. I’m not hating on my team, i’m just acknowledging the other teams and why they are enjoying success. In fact, the Niners have turned it around , because of the defense and not in spite of Alex Smith. Leave it to the Raiders to find the anchor of their offensive line at an NCAA Division II college who was pondering a postgraduate curriculum including molecular biology and medical school.
The last time they found a left tackle that made the Pro Bowl, Art Shell was playing at Maryland State in Princess Anne, Md. That was 42 years ago.
Jared Veldheer may not make the Pro Bowl this year, but based on the way he handled NFL sack leader Jared Allen in last week’s win over the Minnesota Vikings, he is on that track.
“He is what a Raider is, what a Raider is all about,” coach Hue Jackson said. “You play against the best, and when you’re able to hold your own, you realize you’re starting to become something. I’m not surprised by what happened. He’s done a great job all year.”
Veldheer, who deflects praise in the same way he redirected Allen, has moved on to the next challenge — Chicago Bears defensive end Julius Peppers. Veldheer will be responsible for protecting the blind side of quarterback Carson Palmer on Sunday and likely will do so one-on-one, the same way he dealt with Allen.
To prepare, Veldheer will study Peppers with as much rigor as he did his academics at tiny Hillsdale College in Michigan.
“My mindset is just to watch as much tape as possible so I know what he’s going to do, and what the defense is doing so on Sunday I can just go out there and let it hang out and play,” Veldheer said.
Three times since the
Advertisement
Raiders moved back from Los Angeles in 1995 they utilized a first-round draft pick from a major college in hopes of finding a left tackle.
Florida’s Mo Collins arrived in 1998 with the 23rd pick but was quickly moved inside to guard. They tried again the next year at No. 18 with Georgia’s Matt Stinchcomb, who needed shoulder surgery as a rookie and never panned out at tackle, guard or center.
In 2004, the Raiders used the second pick of the draft on Iowa’s Robert Gallery, by all accounts the premier left tackle in the country. Gallery struggled at both right and left tackle before finding a home at left guard.
There were also failed experiments with free agent Kwame Harris in 2008 and Mario Henderson, a third-round project out of Florida State in 2007, until Veldheer took over last season in Week 7, the week the Raiders beat the Denver Broncos 59-14.
As a third-round pick (No. 69 overall) in 2010, Veldheer had some difficult games against the likes of Pittsburgh’s James Harrison, Kansas City’s Tamba Hali and Miami’s Cameron Wake. Being able to neutralize Allen was a big step in his development.
“You have to look at everything on tape and take that bad and realize why it was bad and fix it so you can come out stronger the next time,” Veldheer said. “That’s every game, every practice, take what you need to work on and continue to work on it.”
Part of Veldheer’s preparation for Allen, as well as Peppers, is having front-line players such as Trevor Scott, Kamerion Wimbley and Lamarr Houston give him good looks in practice.
At 6-foot-8, 315 pounds, Veldheer reminds Wimbley of former teammate Joe Thomas, the third overall pick by the Cleveland Browns in the 2007 draft and a Pro Bowl left tackle.
“There’s some similarities there, the way they set, the way they play,” Wimbley said. “He’s got good feet, a good change of direction. He’s tall, has long arms, good quickness, does a good job with the gifts he’s been given.”
Scott said the difference between Veldheer as a rookie and a second-year player is striking.
“It’s night and day, and he was pretty good as a rookie,” Scott said. “Not only is he huge, but he can move, too. You’re not going to run around him, and he’s strong as an ox.”
The Raiders announced that Sunday’s game is sold out, meaning all six regular-season home games have been televised locally.
T.J. Housmandzadeh returned to practice after missing Wednesday to be with his wife and newborn baby. The Raiders remained depleted at wide receiver, though, with Jacoby Ford (foot) and Denarius Moore (foot) not practicing, and Darrius Heyward-Bey (neck) just getting back on the field. “He did a couple of things, ran around a little bit,” Jackson said of Heyward-Bey. “We’ll monitor him. See how he feels tomorrow.”
Though Sebastian Janikowski isn’t on the injury report, he’s still not 100 percent. “I want to be patient with his leg and make sure there’s not an opportunity to have a setback,” Jackson said of his kicker. “We’re getting closer to where it needs to be.”
Defensive tackle Richard Seymour (knee) missed practice, making it likely he’ll be utilized as he was against Minnesota — as a third-down pass rusher.
Still no sign of running back Darren McFadden (foot sprain), who’s likely to miss his fourth straight game.

Go look at the replay of that first TD run by AP. McClain is thinking pass until it’s too late, not sure why, it was 1st down, Curry is reading run all the way but takes himself outta the play by getting sandwiched by 2 linemen.
How are they not on the same page? This is the problem with our D on most occasions. This, to me, falls on the D coordinator. This is why we look great one quarter and look like a hungover pick up squad for another.

Maybe the Raiders will catch another break if Suh gets suspended. Although, I would like to see Wiz II and him go at it. I’m sure his uncle taught him a thing or two about borderline dirtiness.
November 25th, 2011 at 8:03 am
Missing a lot of weapons in this game. Hue’s going to have to be on his game mixing it up and calling plays for Reece, Boss, etc.
Think Chaz could have a huge game this week. In need of a big play, Palmer should just put the ball up there and let him go after it.
November 25th, 2011 at 8:05 am
Suh may get suspended for a game, but I think that’s kind of garbage. Should he have been flagged? Sure. But I thought it didn’t even merit getting tossed out of the game for that. Players get chippy after the whistle and that wasn’t that outrageous to me.
November 25th, 2011 at 8:05 am
Heard that the Bears are running the option with Hester and Forte in practice…Really worried cause Chuky B is clueless on how to stop that thing…well, Chuky B is pretty clueless on stopping pretty much anything, hence the 25th ranked D.
November 25th, 2011 at 8:07 am
Yeah, saw the Suh thing, looked more like he was trying to kick himself free rathen than hurt the Olineman. Will get the “make an example” treatment, at max 1 game suspension.
November 25th, 2011 at 8:10 am
If Hester is in the game on offense, you know the ball is going to him. How do you know what the Bears are runnning in practice?

I agree. Being blown out of proportion bcz of reputation.
Seen plenty of punches thrown that don’t result in suspension. Last week’s whiner game is an example. Was Seymour suspended for decking Big Ben ?
Ejection and $fine seems appropriate.

November 25th, 2011 at 8:20 am
Suh will be suspended for a few reasons.
1) Repeat offender and never been suspended.
2) National telecast(seen by EVERYONE!)
3) He lied after the game about it rather than admit and show some remorse.
4) He had a meeting with Goodell a couple of weeks ago regarding rules and conduct. Goodell WILL make an example of him
5) Not only did he stomp the guy, he shoved his head to the turf 3 times AFTER the whistle.
I know it wasn’t a devastating full bown attempt to take the guys arm off but it’s the fact he attempted it, and again, after teh whistle.

November 25th, 2011 at 9:28 am
The thing about McFadden is that, while he’s one of the most dynamic players in the league when he’s healthy, even when he’s healthy he’s not unstoppable. Teams with defenses that possess a lot of speed on the perimeter have been able to effectively contain McFadden.
McFadden is also one of the highest-paid players on a team in desperate need of salary cap relief. Youngsters like Branch and Shaughnessy need long-term deals, and with so few draft picks this season the Raiders would need to look to free agency to make any necessary improvements.
Is McFadden worth 8+/- games a year? If his deal gets restructured, absolutely yes. But would he be willing to do so considering his injury history and the already-short shelf life of running backs?
I think the Raiders are capable of finding another RB capable of sharing the load with Bush and Jones in the draft, particularly if they had a couple extra draft picks. Would that player be the caliber of player McFadden is? I doubt it, but that player also wouldn’t cost as much and may well be more durable than McFadden has proven to be. It’s a toss-up, but if means the Raiders have more money to improve the defense and build for the future? Could be well worth it.

Players on D are making more than the O. Kelly, Seymour, Routt, McClain, Wimbley, Huff all make BIG bucks. Then you got CJ soaking up cash( he’s already replaced with Chekwa & DVD), Branch is probably due a new contract soon. Get used to this D because I don’t see major changes coming anytime soon.

Kelly and Seymour are both 30+, in the next year or two the team needs to get younger at DT (and find another option at DE if they move Houston inside).
WLB and CB are also still question marks. No one knows what Chekwa or DVD will be long-term, although both will get a chance to prove themselves over the next couple years. Neither have stood out enough that Hue (and whoever else may be calling the shots after the season) won’t look at upgrades if any are available. Curry is a FA soon as well.

Hey, guys, for those of you who haven’t heard, the following is funny in a way.
Josh McCown worked out with the Bears for the first time, hours after agreeing to a one-year contract as a backup quarterback following last Sunday’s injury to starter Jay Cutler. Hope I’m not posting old news, just read it in this morning’s newspaper.
The old Josh. He was kind of for shzt when he was with us, I can’t see him being any better now. Funny if Hanie gets hurt and the Bears have to go with backup Josh. Now that would be funny!

It cannot be understated how important these next two games are. IMO we need be be 8-4 going into GB and we’ll be aaight. But if we loose even one, you go in at 7-5, all of a sudden you lose to GB and you’re at
7-6, then you got DET Lions coming to town and you’re 7-6 and who knows how KC, SD and Denver might be doing at that time. Hell Denver might be in first place by then and controlling their own destiny. This is why sunday is a MUST WIN, then the following week @ MIA is also a must win. This gonna be a fun ride and I hope the wheels do not fall off.

True, the division is not even close “ours”
CHI-town … needs to go down in o.co sunday.
Its likely that denver beats SD and if/when they do they will be in 1st place if we lose.
Therefore, this becomes the biggest game of year at this junction in the season.

If DHB goes it’s huge for us. The guy will be doubles if Moore is out leaving Chaz Housh and hopefully Murph to do some damage
November 25th, 2011 at 11:33 am
ok so DHb will play … but he will be skiddish just like murphy.
Moore might give it a go, play decoy on 3rd and longs?

Hope the Raider players understand this better than anyone. Along with game plan preparation the coaching staff needs to enforce that idea that the team has won some games, but has not actually achieved anything at this point.

Actually Housh just playing role of Hester on scout team punt return; McCann would likely handle PR duties

Palmer needs to get Boss the ball along with Reese to pick up the passing game. I don’t think Carson trust DHB to catch the ball consistently.
November 25th, 2011 at 11:39 am
that makes sense since Housh is very similar to hester
lol
November 25th, 2011 at 11:41 am
if DHB and or Moore play which sounds very possible we aren’t so hurt after all. Biggest worry is Bush getting spent. Bears with Hanie at qb have much bigger injury concerns at this point game is a MUST win

That was a hell of a whiff he had on the sideline in Minn. His hand were whack.
Made a nice hands grab on the play he got hurt.

Bears might try and do what Ponder did to us and run when its there.
November 25th, 2011 at 11:47 am
Von Miller fined 25,000 for his helme hit to the back of Sanchez..
What took them so long … And I can’t believe he didn’t get a roughing flag at the time….
November 25th, 2011 at 11:47 am
Yes hanie will run here and there. for sure. but he also will get stripped a couple times running.

RaiderinParadise…post 332:
Ya, this is a must win game for all the reasons mentioned. Additionally, because we loss the last two games at home, which is unacceptable, and it’s a glaring statement to us … “saying:” If you can’t win at home you can’t make the playoffs and you can’t go deep into the promise land.
If we’re a real contender, we must win at home and we must be able to string 3 and 4 wins together. Sunday would be win three in a row and next week the Dolphins are doable, giving us 4 wins in a row.
Then, if our key injured players are back for Greenbay, we can complete with them. We can complete with anyone in this league when we’re complete, especially with Palmer at the controls. The promise land is obtainable, yes it is, yes it is!
November 25th, 2011 at 11:49 am
I expect Hanie to do some running Sunday …Hue has to have the defense prepared for that..

I don’t believe there was a flag on that play, amazing inconsistency of officiating in the NFL. Ravens got aways with a horse collar and a facemask last night.
November 25th, 2011 at 11:51 am
@hagar the horrible
AGREED!
The team playing this sunday is not the same team that we could have in the playoffs or even in 2 weeks.
with that being said we have to win this game, ugly or not just win and get guys healthy.
To cut the head off the bears you just have to take away forte. he is the main focus.
November 25th, 2011 at 11:53 am
Silverback… Your right… Their was no flag on that play…. Should have been.
November 25th, 2011 at 11:54 am
Injuries have hurt us more than any other team I tried to put together a list:
First we lost Hirum Eugene with a broken hip in preseason.
Also Travis Gothel same thing lost in preseason which is why we had to sign Curry because Groves was not getting the job done.
MLB McClian has been playing hurt so has Richard Seymour who is missing practice and game time now.
We lost Matt Shaughnessy for the season, Chris Johnson has been hurt all year only played in two games all season.
Huff has been playing with a hurt foot and Mike Mitchell was hurt at the beginning of the season and now appears to finally be healthy.
McFadden and his speedy backup Taiwan Jones are out. Both FB’s have been hurt and missed time (Rece and Tonga).
The WR where to start?
DHB hurt, Murphy missed the first 8 games, now Denarius Moore is in a boot? Schillings is always hurt.
Boss was hurt to start the season.
Satele has missed time due to concussions.
Our two rookie CB’s that had to play because of other guys getting hurt are both injured (Chimdi Chekwa and Demarcus Van Dyke) with Chimdi moving to IR last week.
We lost Jason Campbell, Bruce Campbell was hurt in camp
I seriously doubt any other NFL team has a laundry list this long!
Did I leave anyone out?
November 25th, 2011 at 11:56 am
My opinion is the league has gone flag happy…. Everyother play seems to be a penalty now….it’s getting hard to watch with so many flags..
November 25th, 2011 at 11:57 am
Did I leave anyone out?
=====================
Yeah, dont forget about Seabass, even he got hurt and he never gets hurt…still though, make no excuses for them, 6-4, winnable division, next man up
November 25th, 2011 at 12:02 pm
@YoungAmerican
Darren is the best running back on the Raiders. He’s on everyone’s board as a top 5 running back in this league, except yours.
Not to mention, Darren’s the best athlete on the team.
If you didn’t re-sign him it will be a decision the Raiders organization would rue for years.

It’s a great Thanksgiving weekend to be a Raiders fan. Isn’t it?!
Accept offers for DMC during the off-season?? Not without signing MBush29 to an extension before the end of the year.
Find the $$ figure to get it done…making MBush somewhere around the 10-15th highest paid RB in the league. He’s playing at a level to deserve it, and he’ll get it from some other team. Give him a much-deserved extension, and hope we don’t grind him into the ground.
DMC needs to get back…and the Raiders need to win with the best RB duo the NFL has seen in years. MBush’s and DMC’s careers can benefit from the other guy’s…and we fans can enjoy the ride while it lasts.
BUT…if MBush is signed longer-term, and some team came along with an offer of the above-mentioned #2 and #3-round picks for DMC?? Especially if the picks are in the early stages of those rounds, it’s a deal that must be considered, if not jumped at.
I used to watch the mind-boggling Bo Jackson play back in the day. He was going to be the greatest…right up until he wasn’t on the field anymore. DMC is special, when he’s on the field. On the sideline, he’s just another nice guy.
November 25th, 2011 at 12:09 pm
Randy didn’t even play when he was on the team…
what a quitter, DESPISE that Punk,
the league is better off without him…
Hope he’s still roling in that RIDICULOUS Purple truck he was driving when he got to Oakland…
November 25th, 2011 at 12:18 pm
@HayesDaze37
I’ve noticed a pattern, not just with your post comparing DMC to other running back, a lot of other peeps as well.
Stop comparing Darren to Bo or to anyone else. Darren Mcfadden is his own man and should be compared only to Darren Mcfadden
Hue Jackson: “Darren Mcfadden is the best player on this team, I know that.”
If you think Hue would think of trading Darren, you are erroneously misinformed and out of touch with the pulse of Hue’s plan.
