Post-practice notes from Wednesday (11-30-11)
By Steve Corkran
Wednesday, November 30th, 2011 at 6:42 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Spent the better part of the day working on the Chester McGlockton obituary for the paper. Thanks for your patience and understanding, and may God bless McGlockton, his wife Zina and two daughters.
With that said, here are some tidbits from today’s proceedings, the first full practice for the Raiders in preparation for their game against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.
INJURY LIST NOT SHRINKING
Kicker Sebastian Janikowski is back on the injury report, joining the list of usual occupants. Coach Hue Jackson doesn’t seem too concerned about Janikowski’s left hamstring.
Why should he? Janikowski is fresh from a game in which he set a franchise record by converting all six of his field-goal attempts against the Chicago Bears in a 25-20 victory and being named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week.
“Maybe he kicked too many field goals,” Jackson said. “You never know. He did an excellent job. Hopefully we’ll get him back out here soon. He’ll be fine. I told you, I’m always going to be cautious with these players. We got some big games down the stretch here.”
Add wide receiver Denarius Moore and defensive end Jarvis Moss to the long list of players who missed practice but weren’t mentioned in an earlier post.
Moore was in full uniform at practice this morning. However, he was deemed not healthy enough to participate, Jackson said. Moss still is recovering from a hamstring injury he suffered against the Minnesota Vikings on Nov. 20.
For the record, it’s an ankle that is botherin Moore and not his foot, as Jackson initially reported. Hey, cut Jackson some slack trying to keep track of all the injuries and their corresponding body parts.
Moore said he was on the field Wednesday on a fact-finding misson.
“It was just to really see where I was standing at, as far as this week,” Moore said. “And so we’re still taking it day by day, see how it’s going to go.”
T.J. Houshmandzadeh fielded punts in Moore’s absence.
LOCKER ROOM SCENE
Curious what it was like in the Raiders locker room after they beat the Bears? Here’s a snippet from Jackson singlin out Janikowski and Shane Lechler for their heroics.
Jackson: “We all know they’re the highest-paid kickers in football, But listen to me, listen to me. Truth be told, guys, here’s the deal: the last time this place was 7-4, these two men were here (Janikowski says under his breath, “That’s a long time).” These two men were here and these two guys, today, helped this team get to where (it) needed to be.”
Lechler: “It’s a good deal to be 7-4. Everybody’s happy, but guess what — we’ve got a lot of football to play, men. We’ve got a whole lot of football to play. Some tough games coming up. Let’s keep on the grind. I’m telling you, we’ve got keep on the grind. If you want to keep this feeling, keep grinding…”
Quarterback Carson Palmer said he can’t recall a punter being asked to address the team after a victory. Then again, he added, Lechler is unlike any other punter in the league.
“No, there might not be another one in the league,” Palmer said. “He’s definitely the best punter in the league, but as far as a teammate, a leader, a veteran, a professional, he does everything right. He says the right things. He doesn’t act like a kicker. I wouldn’t put him in that mold. He is just a great teammate.”
Veteran defensive tackle Richard Seymour played for a New England Patriots team that held kicker Adam Vinatieri in high regard.
Seymour said he and his Raiders teammates feel the same way toward Lechler and Janikowski, in large part because they walk the walk.
“Well, obviously, with him being the best punter in the league, that helps,” Seymour said. “Guys listen to guys who get it done. And he’s a combination of both, where he’s a veteran leader and also he’s a great player.”
FOURTH-QUARTER BLUES FELT BY ALL
Palmer wasn’t even with the Raiders when their five-game scoring drought in the fourth quarter started. Yet, he was just as aware of the the ignominious streak.
“I was definitely aware of it,” Palmer said of a streak that ended when running back Michael Bush scored a 3-yard touchdown late in the fourth quarter against the Bears. “Especially in that game, we needed that score. But we need more, and we need to find ways to generate more points in the red zone, but also just in the fourth quarter in general.
“At this point in the year, especially with some of the games we have coming up, we have to generate more points in the second half.”
JOHNSON MIGHT PLAY SUNDAY
Cornerback Chris Johnson showed progress by returning to practice last week and being active against the Bears. However, he failed to set foot on the field once the game started.
“He just wanted me to put the pads back on, just in case,” Johnson said of coach Jackson. “I was the emergency guy last week. I just went along with what coach wanted me to do.”
This week?
“I’m getting back in the mix this week,” Johnson said.
CLOSE GAMES A BENEFIT FOR RAIDERS
None of the Raiders seven victories has been by more than 10 points and the difference in those games is only 43 points.
Jackson said the short-term pain of battling through so many tension-filled games will benefit the Raiders in the long run.
“It’s very important because, as you go down the stretch here these games are going to be close, going to be tough,” Jackson said. “We all wish we had those blowouts where you’re sitting in the fourth quarter smiling. But that’s not the way it is in the NFL. Hopefully we’ll have one here soon at some point in time.”
The other benefit is that close games are the kind of affairs that build confidence and character. Jackson said. Maybe so, he added, but it still would be nice to be a part of a laugher.
“Nothing is going to be given to us,” Jackson said. “We understand that. We know it’s going to be tough. This team kind of likes it that way. I don’t like it that way. They’re OK with it as long as it (leads to) wins and wins.”
BUSH HOLDING UP WELL
Bush has averaged 28 carries the past three games as he absorbs the workload in Darren McFadden’s absence. You would be hard pressed to know Bush has been used so much, though.
“He’s been awesome,” Jackson said. “I’ve been around guys that carry the ball like that and then they come to Wednesday practice and they can’t move. Regardless of whether you gave them victory Monday off or not, because physically, it’s tough. He hasn’t batted an eye.”

Dolphins running game vs. Raiders run defense:Both Reggie Bush and rookie Daniel Thomas ran hard against the Cowboys, as the backs averaged 3.9 yards per run. In Thomas’ case, his 4.2 yards a carry was his highest since his NFL debut almost three months ago. If the Dolphins can get four yards per rush with both backs contributing, that should be more than enough to keep defenses honest and open up passing lanes. Last year, the Dolphins piled up 186 yards on the ground in their game against Oakland, by far their largest output of 2010. Things haven’t improved for the silver and black as their run defense has been a black hole this year, too, with an NFL-worst 5.3 yards allowed per carry on average. EDGE: Dolphins
Dolphins passing game vs. Raiders pass defense:Matt Moore had a bit more of a Jekyll-and-Hyde performance against Dallas (the miss of Charles Clay at the Dallas 5 was cringeworthy), but he has made himself a ton of money for the next contract he signs, piling up a cumulative 112.7 passer rating in the month of November as the Dolphins, 0-7 through Halloween, went 3-1. The one area not accounted for in passer rating is sacks, and Moore continues to take bad sacks after having plenty of time to unload a ball out of bounds. However, he has shown that he can make the NFL’s most difficult throws. Brandon Marshall’s 20.6-yard reception average against the Cowboys was his highest in over two years. EDGE: Dolphins
Raiders running game vs. Dolphins run defense:The Dolphins held emerging Dallas superstar DeMarco Murray to under four yards a carry on the ground, and in the past five games have yielded a sparkling per-rush average of 3.14 yards. Paul Soliai and company must be salivating at the thought of Oakland roling into town. Boasting the same primary backs as they do this season (Darren McFadden, Michael Bush and Marcel Reece), the Raiders’ backs ran 10 times and gained a single yard in late November last year. While Carson Palmer dictates more back-end respect for the Raider passing game, this matchup, especially with McFadden extremely questionable, is a good one for Mike Nolan’s crew. EDGE: Dolphins
Raiders passing game vs. Dolphins pass defense: If only Carson Palmer had been the Dallas quarterback. With the pass rush the Dolphins were applying on Thanksgiving, he would have been sacked at least a half-dozen times. Cameron Wake and Jason Taylor can be confident that Palmer will drop back seven steps and, decidedly unlike Tony Romo, not move from his spot. The key, though, is getting there as the 6-foot-5 gunslinger can still kill you with the deep ball to athletic wideouts such as Darrius Heyward-Bey and Louis Murphy. Sean Smith logged his second career interception last week. His first came against Palmer in Cincinnati last season. EDGE: Dolphins

Dolphins special teams vs. Raiders special teams: The Raiders bring the league’s best kicker-punter duo into the game in Sebastian Janikowski and Shane Lechler. Last week against the Bears, Janikowski pounded through six field goals in the 25-20 Oakland victory, while Lechler piled up a net average of 49.2 yards against superstar Devin Hester and company, with one punt going 80 yards for a touchback. It’s no accident that this duo represents the entirety of the holdovers from Oakland’s 2002 AFC champion team. On the Dolphins’ side, Shayne Graham missed a 47-yard field goal attempt which loomed large in Arlington, but now Dan Carpenter is back. EDGE: Raiders
Intangibles:The gave away the store (two first-round picks) for Palmer, and since the bye week, the move has paid dividends, with Oakland on a three-game win streak and improbably on top of the AFC West, one game up on the Denver Tebows. The Dolphins, meanwhile, have scored more points than they have allowed, and, gulp, are on a two-game home win streak after ending a seven-game skid at Sun Life Stadium. EDGE: Dolphins
Prediction: Dolphins 33, Raiders 13

If we lose this game we don’t deserve to win the AFC West

Whats’s even funnier is that the writer thinks we’ll only run the ball 10 times again. Really! He doesn’t explain how we still win games with our pourous run d.
November 30th, 2011 at 7:14 pm
Yep. Mikes been a beast and he doesn’t fumble. We Reallllly need to resign him. Hey, there is nothing wrong with being the highest paid 2nd string RB in the league. He’ll he should get 20 carries a fame and McFadden 15…who cares who walks on the field for the first series.
Dmac needs to prove that he can stay healthy. He has been the most injured back over the past 4 years with the lightest workload. We all know he is good, there is no denying that, but what good is it to have a Ferrari in your garage that breaks down every time you drive it down the street?
You don’t get rid of it, it’s nice to have, but it’s a luxury that is essentially useless. Bush is really, really proving his worth here folks. Tough call for sure…glad I don’t have to make it.
November 30th, 2011 at 7:23 pm
I think Bush realizes he is in a pretty good situation. I know he’s doing pretty good, but I personally think if he was the only rb on a team he wouldnt be at a probowl level…just my opinion.
November 30th, 2011 at 7:24 pm
What the close margin of victory says to me is that the Raiders still need to learn to close teams out. Too many times we have had big leads only to let the other team back into the ballgame.
Hue can talk all he wants about the close games being a benefit when the playoffs come around. The underlying issue is letting teams come back to make those games close, and that needs to be addressed.
November 30th, 2011 at 7:24 pm
Lets leave them shaking their heads in the same manner the bears were. 7-4 vs 3-8 and the 3-8 team is better in almost every facet of the game. Sounds like a homless guy did the evals. Cool I hope the dolphins use this as a scouting report.

To hell with the Seymour haters-he had me pumped up! Then reading the above transcript…what punter can address the team?
We talk and blow lots of hot air on this blog but the truth of the matter is that these Raiders know the time and what must be done!!!!
November 30th, 2011 at 7:31 pm
Just saw the line has Miami by 3. We’re getting no love this week. We really gotta spank Miami to show the whole league what we’re working with.
November 30th, 2011 at 7:35 pm
Miami being favored could have something to do with us nearly choking 3 weeks straight. Some of you are acting as if we just blew out our 3 previous opponents. We could have. But we let all 3 back in the game. That’s why the oddsmakers are picking Miami. The Raiders are bound to pis one away.
November 30th, 2011 at 7:35 pm

November 30th, 2011 at 7:37 pm
Romanowski put it best, regarding whether or not someone had a good game. We shouldn’t have to look for you. We shouldn’t have to watch game tape deciphering your every nuance and grading them. You should be in every play. Where has Seymour been? He’s not here to show solid technique against his matchups. He’s here to make plays. Period.
November 30th, 2011 at 7:38 pm
Honestly the bears were never in it. Yeah they tried to come back at the end, but they had no time. Looking at the replay, Hue literally takes off his headset after we score the td.
November 30th, 2011 at 7:43 pm
The Bears were never in it…except for the end when they were down 5 pts, kicking an onside. Good grief. What is the matter with you?
November 30th, 2011 at 7:44 pm
The Raiders are winning with a seriously banged up football team and that’s commendable. But that D still has choke disease.

November 30th, 2011 at 7:48 pm
We can’t b perfect , let’s keep winning ugly games n keep getting better n better each n every game to heck with how they win ..once we make the playoffs ..anything can happen from there

Honestly, if we’re ever to be a 12 win team and/or go deep into the playoffs, Hue needs cull the Al scholarships out of that D. They nearly blew each of those 3 past wins. And I think Seymour is one of them. As Romanowski said…we shouldn’t have to look for you. You should be in the middle of our screens.

Big f’n deal, GhostRaiders. I’ve been a fan of this team since you were in diapers and I’ve seen them choke away more promising seasons than this. As long as there’s Davis scholarships on the roster (like Richard SeeLess), there’s always cause for concern. He blew the Denver game single handedly with his facemask. The f’n idiot.

Sullivan44, I have been trying to grasp your mind state as it relates to this here very forum. All you do is trashtalk the Raiders, other posters, etc. The only logical conclusion I can come to is that you are very lonely man/woman whose sole existence revolves around this very board. Get it together man, you are pretty pathetic, I can only imagine what you look like do in real life.
On another note, we are finding ways to win when we do not play our best football, a sign of a good team. We need to keep grinding games out, get some key pieces back on the field and make our Superbowl push. This team is primed for a run, In Hue I trust!

Correct me if I’m wrong here. Chester was pretty good with us. But didnt he went over to the Chiefs sideline asking them to take it easy on him during 1 game because he wants to be a Chiefs in the offseason? Was a big fan of his until I heard that story during those years and felt he was a quitter and betrayer.

____________________
Sully MIGHT have a point. however, do consider that Seymour is not 100 percent with his knee and he only plays on third downs and that for the most part is why he hasn’t been ’seen’. Unless you are strictly referring to the plays he is actually in. Perhaps he is becoming a liability and thus to save face, coach reports it as injury related than as an actual demotion possibly? In the least, he can be effective on third down as we go down the stretch of the season and beyond. worst case scenario, Seymour is really deep down inside loyal to the patriots and is on a secret payroll to sabotage.. thats why the bonehead penalties when we played the Pats.. it was a total freeby to Tom that set the momentum of that game. an unnecessary roughness penalty without being rough! i am kidding about the latter scenario you should all know. i would so hate that if were to have any truth though.
November 30th, 2011 at 8:55 pm
lol. Now Seymour’s banged up. The wheel of excuses. Your spin, Reign.
November 30th, 2011 at 8:56 pm
Seriously, Raccoon, did you really think I would show? Why would I? I just wanted to see who’s dumb enough to actually chase their tail. No, don’t want to drink with you, and honestly, I’m too old to get into fights. Still funny you took the bait though.
November 30th, 2011 at 8:56 pm
i also think Seymour may play smart and to the best of his aging physical capabilities and thus is able to be effective in setting up those around him to make plays. sort of like an aging pitcher who learns how to use finesse once his fastball is no longer 95 miles an hour
November 30th, 2011 at 8:57 pm
Seymour has been around long enough to feign injury to avoid practice, and mysteriously heal by game time.
November 30th, 2011 at 8:57 pm
I usually think Romanowski’s a wind bag. But one thing he knows is aggressive defensive play. He put it best: We shouldn’t have to look for you. We have to look for Seymour every week. It’s getting old.

This team needs to keep that sense of urgency every single week and keep the eye on the prize…which is winning the division!
Keep mixing it up on offense versus the Fins and keep their defense off balance by utilizing all the weapons on offense. Use play action, roll Palmer out a bit to buy him time and never forget to utilize the outside screens and even middle screens.
Both lines need to continue to play lower and not too high! Win the leverage battle.
Miami will try and throw screens of their own and do mis direction to try and confuse the Raider D.
I would like to see some disguised play action TE drag routes, where Boss and Myers get open on the opposite side of the field.
Raiders need to do all they can to resign Bush!
Raiders should learn from the mistakes off other teams who do not have two good RB’s!
November 30th, 2011 at 10:31 pm
Pay Bush like a starter or a semi starter! It’s worth it!
Then if necessary they can always try and trade him if teams come calling for him.

It needs to be said one more time and that is:
WTF was Chuch Bresnahan doing in the last three minutes of our game against the Bears…”RUSHING THREE
FREAKING PLAYERS?” Is he out of his mind? If Al was still around I would blame him (may he RIP) as Al always dictated our defensive schemes. But, Al is long gone to a better place, hopefully.
Hue, if he wasn’t involved himself, needs to take control of our coaches and be ready to shut them down when they freak out and insert systems into our game plans that can lose the game. If the Bears get the on-side kickoff and they almost did…they could have won the game. All because fuzk face was rushing three men.
Please, call the Governor, call the posse comitatus, call Sonny Corleone, call someone who will stop this shzt. We’re too close to blow it all away now.

——————————————————————————–

Seriously people, has this or has this not gone to the dogs without Tj? There are some good Raider fans here, I can tell. But Tj is like the godfather of this blog, and B is the leuitenant. We’re missing our blog leader and it is not the same.
You cannot deny this: Tj is all Raider.
Please people, stop the purse swinging. The cat fights must stop. Clean up or get out. Tj will be back when peace has been restored.
My nine point “Clean This Place Up, Trolls Be Gone Agenda’ will appear soon.
Oh what the hell, here it is now:
1) This is a Raider blog. Some people have other thoughts of bein haters. They must cease and desist and never return. They are to depart this blog immediately.
2) If you do not love the Raiders, why are you here? The Raiders are who they are. Love it or leave it. Long Live Al Davis.
3) There are other blog sites more in favor of purse swinging and cat fights. This is a Raider blog and all things not Raider shall cease to exist.
4) Tj deserves respect. When he returns, show him respect for his true faithfullness to all things Raider.
5) Certain people who do not talk all things Raider shall be ignored. The new blog design will have filters and security to keep anti-Raider talk away from the comment section.
6) Under no circumstances will comments go beyond what is Raider. Non-Raider banter is pointless and useless. It has no place here.
7) The Raiders are having a carreer season and should be treated as such.
9) Al Davis put this together. Al Davis still is with the Raiders. To be a Raider fan is to be a Al Davis fan and to be a Al Davis fan is to be a Raider fan. It can be no other way.
These nine points are non-negotiable. Tj has to return to this blog. Any negative treatment towards his return shall be looked down upon and any body who engages in badger bantering shall have there membership reviewed.
This is a Raider blog people. Lets get it together and pull for our team. No more ass baiting and mud slinging. Raider Nation is in your skin and that is why you are here. Treat it as such.
Now get ready with anticipation for the Raider/Miami game and know the Raiders will beat the livin schitt out of them and further unite Raider Nation. Miami will take it so far up the ass they will actually enjoy the humiliation. Strange I know, don’t ask me why, but they will most definately enjoy it.

Miami rush defense giving up 97.5 yards per game…
Guess who is right behind them?
Bears and Vikings
Raiders rushed for 162 against Vikings and
70 against Bears (Despite a huge drop in passing game)
Plus Miami’s rush defense is helped by the fact that teams are airing it out on their defense. Dolphins giving up 248 yards per game.
Raiders will move the ball on this team.

Seems covert that the Raiders seem to play teams, along the middle of the season, comin outta a bye week or a thurs night game. Convenient they go to miami who had ample rest after T-day. Somebody tell Reggie if they were better than 3-8, they wouldn’t be 3-8.
December 1st, 2011 at 1:52 am
Fact:
Not one team has won a game this year that had to cross two-time-zones and they were coming off a short week.
The league could have scheduled our short week game at home, but they chose the latter, obviously. Then they have us traveling pass two time-zones the following week for Green Bay.
Also, if you track our games closely, on key out of bounds plays, we’re always losing a few seconds, like the Bears game, right before the half ended, our runner when out of bounds with 8 (almost 9) seconds left, but they ran the clock down to five seconds. That forced us to kick a field goal. Etc., etc., etc.
It’s not sour grapes, just like the penalties that are called much more frequently on us than most other teams.
It’s facts, facts and more facts. Fzck Roger Godell the fzck-stick commisioner in his fat azz.
Go Raiders, be the first to break the cycle and win this Sunday. And, please “chuckie” stop rushing three freaking line men. Prevent…prevents you from winning for freaking fool.

Hagar,
The person in charge of the clock for Bears home games is an Alameda county employee. Yes we were screwed, but screwed by one of our own.
West Coast teams have a winning record playing 10am East Coast road games this season (4-3 by my count). 49ers are 2-0 (beat Det, Philly), Seattle beat the Giants, and AZ also beat Philly.

Good morning, I didn’t get to say who I was and someone yesterday was bothered by it and a comment I made saying don’t pay attention to MR so we could all talk raider football and saying I was a jackass ( I guess he thinks I am MR as well, LOL). I live in Mexico, I am 25 years old, I have been a raiders fan since I was little.
I guess some people think they are the owners of this blog, I just want to talk raider football (long time reader of this blog).

I’ve watched this Dolphin team play about 4 times this year and there is no way they even remotely stack up to the Raiders. That is a complete joke. The Raiders should come out and handle them with no problem.
The only way the lose is if they beat themselves. There is no excuse for them losing to that sorry team.
December 1st, 2011 at 7:47 am
Raiders at Dolphins
Florio’s take: The Dolphins played well enough to beat the Cowboys in Dallas. The Dolphins will play well enough to beat the Raiders in Oakland. And the Raiders, still banged up, are due for a stumble. Tony Sparano may not save his job, but he’ll definitely throw a wrench into the franchise’s plans to draft a quarterback in the top ten.
Florio’s pick: Dolphins 24, Raiders 21.
Rosenthal’s take: Miami is favored by three partly because Oakland misses its big play threats. Darrius Heyward-Bey, Chaz Schilens, and Louis Murphy make too many mistakes. Michael Bush is playing well, but he’s no Darren McFadden. It’s a credit to Hue Jackson and Carson Palmer this team keeps winning. (And will keep winning.)
Rosenthal’s pick: Raiders 28, Dolphins 24.
December 1st, 2011 at 7:47 am
The time is now! We have to go to 8-4…
But, rewatching the Bears game last night…there were a few throws that almost got intercepted! When the Dolphins went on that 3-0 streak, and even in the Dallas game, the DBs were the ones that improved! Palmer better be thinking…just saying…

Who cares which team the “experts” pick? How many of them go undefeated in their picks? It’s a waste of brain activity to worry about it.
What others think of the Raiders should have no effect on their ability to win or lose. In the end, all that matters is who actually wins the game, not who was picked to win.

Jason Hill (WR) was released by the Jaguars this morning, he ran a 4.32 at the combine (Al speed) is 6′-1″ and is only 26 years old.

If the Bears recover the on-side kick, and they almost did, they would have been in a position to possibly score on us. Especially using a prevent defense that only prevents you from winning. Chuck B. needs to stop that shzt and Hue’s responsible for allowing it.

Curry finding his groove in Oakland

By Bill Williamson
While much of the post-trade attention in Oakland has been focused on how quarterback Carson Palmer is adjusting to being a Raider, the addition of linebacker Aaron Curry shouldn’t be overlooked.
Curry has elevated his game since being traded to the Raiders from Seattle last month. Curry was a major disappointment after the Seahawks took him No. 4 overall in 2009. He was inconsistent, didn’t show good instincts and underachieved as a Seahawk. However, Curry has been a solid, hard-nosed player for Oakland.
He made several big plays in the Raiders’ victory over the Bears on Sunday. Curry has 27 tackles in six games with Oakland; he had 22 tackles in five games with Seattle this season.
The best part of the deal for Oakland is it didn’t cost it much at all. Seattle took on much of Curry’s remaining salary. All Oakland owes Seattle is a 2012 seventh-round choice and a conditional 2013 fifth-rounder.
I checked in with Matt Williamson of Scouts Inc. to get his thoughts on Curry. Williamson said Curry has been productive for Oakland, especially at the price tag. Here are some of Williamson’s thoughts: “The key is that Oakland didn’t give much up for him. So this is all gravy. He has fit in well and seems to be getting better. … I wouldn’t say that he looks like a linebacker that was a top-five should look. But I do think he is probably playing the best football of his career and is now a legitimate starting linebacker.”
December 1st, 2011 at 8:43 am
We were in the “Red-Zone” too many times in that Bears game and because of Seabass we were able to win the game. Three points is better than a zippo.
We need to at least convert 50% of those red-zones into touchdowns, minimum. Final score against the Bears should have been 37 to 13 as I’m not giving the Bears credit for their last score against us. That’s strictly on Bresnahan and his 3 man rush.
If those 3 pointers were all touchdowns, we win 49 to 13. In that senario, we’re untouchable and even Green Bay would be running for cover.
December 1st, 2011 at 8:46 am
Although I do believe one of those red zone trips maybe could have been a TD, if the clock read 8 seconds instead of 5…maybe! We have the best kicking duo in the league right now and has been for awhile…but I agree on one aspect…no matter how could Jano has become, I rather only see him on extra points!
December 1st, 2011 at 8:48 am
Bcz24…Ya, can’t argue with you about “if’s”…but I can make my point that many situations don’t have to happen again if proper changes are made, especially that 3 man rush. You can’t count the number of games we lost over the pass years when we loss leads and loss
the games as well because of the prevent garbage.
December 1st, 2011 at 8:48 am
We’ll have another chance to see exactly how far this Oakland team has come this weekend. This is yet another game that Raider teams in previous years would find a way to lose.
December 1st, 2011 at 8:49 am
I agree! We should NEVER go into prevent!
December 1st, 2011 at 8:50 am
Routt is developing a habit of having really solid games in terms of completion percentage and YPA, but still allowing one easy TD per game. Frustrating.

————————
I think Green Bay looks at the game film and sees a Raiders team that scored seven times against a very good Bears defense.
Green Bay wins on the strength of its offense, not its defense. They are terrible at tackling. There’s some good video out there proving it.
There’s every reason to believe that game could be a shootout, especially if we get DMac and the WRs back.

Earlier in the game Bresh blitzed and we gave up an easy TD on 3rd and long.
Later in the game, he rushes 3 and get burnt deep to Knox on a 3rd and long.
Seems to me the coach is trying different things AND THE PLAYERS ARE FAILING IN BOTH instances.
Not on the coach, IMO, that is on the guys on the field. Plus that deep ball to Knox was a helluva toss, that a sub 4.4 guy (Knox) snagged with one-hand.

Agree, but it seems like most of the blown TDs are due to assignment issues, which he needs to recognize better, but he’ll get better, as he already has improved over the season. But in terms of just one on one coverage, Stan is having a great year. I love watching how hard it is for WRs to get separation against him at the line of scrimmage.
December 1st, 2011 at 9:00 am
Our run defense is better than it looks statistically.
It’s a few long runs that we let get away from us, just like the 80 yard pass bomb in the closing minutes
makes our pass defense look less effective. Ya, I know, long runs and passes are part of the game. But, on the other hand some of those are so unnecessary.
December 1st, 2011 at 9:01 am
There was an article in SI last week about how overrated defense rankings are, due to them being based off yards per game.
I think 5 of the last 7 super Bowl winning teams had a team defense ranked 23rd or worst. Saints were 29th, Colts 31st, Patriots in the mid 20’s.
It broke down that the Packers defense gives up 35% more yards in the 4th quarter than any other quarter, when teams are playing catchup and racking up meaningless yards.
They lead the NFL in INT’s, turnovers, top 10 in ypc allowed, middle of the pack in points per game, and yet are the “worst” ranked defense due to ypg rankings.
December 1st, 2011 at 9:01 am

December 1st, 2011 at 9:05 am
To be fair to Routt, “one easy TD per game” is overstated. He’s given up 5 TDs this season while his completion percentage and YPA is lower than Revis, Nnamdi, and Woodson.
December 1st, 2011 at 9:06 am
Reading the article now.
Best stat to look for Super Bowl champion is point differential.
“15 of the last 20 Super Bowl champions, have either finished 1st or 2nd in point differential”.
Last year, the Pack were ranked #2, this year #1.
December 1st, 2011 at 9:06 am
That 81 yard catch and run by Knox was a helluva play by Knox and Caleb…that TD after, Branch was a step late!
December 1st, 2011 at 9:08 am
I think we could have rushed 5 guys, and if Henie can still get the ball there and Knox catching it with one hand, it wouldn’t have mattered.
Instead of blaming the coach, how about the guys who were deep in coverage and still let him get over the top on him?
What’s their excuse?
December 1st, 2011 at 9:09 am

We still have a lot of work to do…I heard CJ is healthy enough to play this week…not sure if that matters or not, but does he rotate in and out with Sheppard?
December 1st, 2011 at 9:13 am
Routt is by far one of our best players and one of the most under rated players in the league, altogether. Stats are nice, but I actually ENJOY watching Stan match up against WRs, and how aggressive he is in coverage, which does result in the occasional PI, but hey, I’ll take it. When a WR beats Routt in zone, Im not that surprised. He used to be horible in zone, so at least hes greatly improved. But for a WR to beat him in straight up man to man coverage is always impressive, cause Stan is one of the best out there. Just watch the top CBs and watch how they cover, their aggression, their tendencies. Routts coverage skills, and speed, is just good football to watch.

That was a mistake.
If the Bears can come out on 3rd and long and make a helluva one handed catch for a first down, then you take your hat off to them.
But know way you make it easy for that scrub QB by calling a blitz with soft coverage behind it. Especially the same damn blitz you run all the time. AND, when the QBsees it coming for about 6 seconds before he snaps the ball.
December 1st, 2011 at 9:22 am
YPC is good, also rushing TD’s allowed.
For pass defense, look at QB rating allowed or QBR.
Raiders are #5 in the league in QB rating allowed, and in the mid 20’s in ypg.
Which means we give up yards, but at a rate much higher than the majority of the league, we generate turnovers in the passing game.

If you look at the tape again you’ll see that Hanie had forever and forever in those last plays when we were rushing three men. Even Kyle Boller would have looked good making those throws with that much time.

To be fair to Routt, “one easy TD per game” is overstated. He’s given up 5 TDs this season while his completion percentage and YPA is lower than Revis, Nnamdi, and Woodson.
——————–
I think it’s impossible to say what Nnamdi’s impact would have been on this team. If Al was still around? This defense would be far better with Nnamdi. In Oakland, playing Al’s defense, he’d rarely be challenged. Although with Al around he likely still wouldn’t be allowed to shadow the #1 WR.
The Eagles are flat-out using him wrong. Not taking advantage of what he’s good at. Terrible FA signing on their part. They paid him without understanding how to utilize him. They’re trying to use him the way the Packers use Woodson, and the fact is that Nnamdi is just not the same kind of player that Woodson is.
Still, there’s no way to tell that in Oakland, sans-Davis defense, Nnamdi would be used the same way he was for years here. Would he be allowed to stick on the #1 WR in man coverage all day? They’re using FAR more zone coverage than they ever have, and blitzing at a higher rate than they ever have – though that might be the product of not having Nnamdi.
The changes in the defense, however, have benefited the defense as a whole. The Raiders are playing their best defense in years. If they can be a little more consistent against the run, especially against mobile QBs, they are capable of playing at a championship level. Just need to take that next step.

I would think if you know your the only one covering Knox you wouldn’t be giving up 8 yards in concession before the ball is even snapped…Again, I hate the hypothetical and the if scenarios, disrupting that play by second with a jam on the line makes the outcome of that singular play totally different…

I remember on that 3rd and 18 play where Hanie ran for the first down, I had just told my little guy “We better not be in Man defense again” and sure enough, Man defense and he runs for the 1st down.
At that point in the game, a blind man would have known to play zone because Hanie ran for 1st downs prior to that.

I think people look to place blame too much on things.
The teams and players get paid and are in the NFL too. They are going to do things, that even if we have the right play-call and get good execution, the other teams execution might be just a bit better.
Granted, some things look way too easy at times (like the 1st half Knox TD) but the bomb to Knox late in the game was just flawless execution from the Bears.
Not a whole helluva lot you can do about that.

It’s easy to criticize the coach on the sideline…Watch how far Routt is off of Knox on the slant play when he is man on man with both Branch and Giordano blazing from each end of the line of scrimmage…The receivers didn’t cross as no screening was necessary…He should have at the very least been jamming at the LOS….He is 8 yards off of him when the ball is snapped…There is zero help deep and the entire middle of the field is wide open….TD
Is there any rule that says the DB can’t knock a receiver off his feet at the LOS..almost like a tackle dummy drill?

When considering the impact of what Nnamdi would or wouldn’t have had with us if he had stayed, you must take into account the money we would have had to pay.
That added money may have prevented us from picking up some players that we did and who have been productive.
Nnamdi was going to be too expensive to keep.

I think they will go 9-7 to finish the year, and probably be 1 game out of the playoffs.
The NFL live guys were on the Herd, and said Von Miller might win defensive MVP this year (will definately be in the top 3) and may be a top 15 players at any position in the NFL.
Tebow has started 6 games this year, and in 5 of them he didn’t turn it over.
Ball-control with a great defense, and they will be in every game.

You have to load the box with 9 people against Tebow, to get the same effect as loading it with 8, and DC’s just don’t want to do that.
In regular rushing offenses, the QB just hands it off and doesn’t do anything.
With Tebow rumbling around, it allows for an extra blocker.
Pretty tricky, and somewhat sustainable if your a healthy 23 year old dude. Not sure it will work when he is 27 or has a bum ankle, but for now, it ain’t stopping.

MIA is excited to play us, I guarantee you that … Moore is productive and can make every throw in this league, he just hasn’t been on the right team/talent pool … but the fins have nice targets and compliments to him.
We have to hit him. force turnovers, because our patchwork offense is going ot hit a wall on the road, thats my gut. unless moore is back healthy and Taiwan, we really are askig a lot of Bush again.

They pretty much do for most of the game….Denver’s D keeps ‘em in it though, and then if it’s a one score game, and Denver has the ball in the 4th; all it takes is one lapse, and one person who has outside containment has consistently blown their assigment in pinches in too far and Tebow reads it perfectly. It’s happened at critical junctions (red zone, 3rd or 4th and long) in all of Denver’s wins…….well, that and/or divine intervention taking place literally in front of all our eyes is the key to the Broncs getting some Ws…Lol…but that should all stop soon….God loves the Raiders just as much and something’s gotta give!

McClain should be home resting that foot and watching film to learn how to anticipate and taking better angles!!!
He’s running out of time in becoming legit!

Rolando McClain, obviously, not at practice. Not sure why he was allowed to go home to Alabama.

McClain should be Rehabing that foot…. Not banging..

Maybe Hue gave him an extra day off to fly back and be with the family before checking in with the team on Friday.
Great way to thank your coach for giving you a break ,huh?

Even if it happened on Monday, why are you in Alabama and not in Oakland during a game week? The only way the story flies is if he was home for some personal family biz and got the pardon to go from the team…he’s gotta be more professional than that…hopefully; it’s all just hearsay though and it winds up being reported he was in Oakland all of this week and those were just a lot of people in his social circle. I’ll keep my fingers crossed, but right now there’s a whole lotta smh-ing….

I have been a big mcclain hater as many of you know. That was purely in his play/lack of effort and physicality.
He is great at getting guys in place before the snap, then he just plays flat75% of the time. The MLB in a 4-3 scheme like ours is the biggest key to stopping the run. He fails misrably at covering RB/TE.
Now he is a 23yr old millionaire thug sorting out gangster drama claiming he has “family issues”. He just wants to kick it with the gansgsters and pay for everyting to get respect.
He is kinda like Russell.

Mclain is very important indeed but for an 8th overall pick lets not fool ourselves, he needs to be better. improvement is nice and all, but next year he need to make the pro bowl. 8th overall pick, think about it.

I get the feeling that McClain is not totally dedicated to his craft.

Sounds as if Hue is being too easy on guys not wanting to practice. As a first year Head Coach, maybe Hue is trying to be their buddy and their coach at the same time.
Big mistake. Hue you don’t have to be their friend.
Focus on coaching and earning their respect…in the end, they’ll love you just as much. Conditioning wins games in the 4th quarter and maybe that’s why we suck during that part of the game.

The Tebow thing is evidence of absurdly bad football by opposing defense…
IT IS ASSIGNMENT BASED DEFENSE…
I have said it a million times. We ran this exact same offense at my High School..
We were VERY successful with it because high school kids play undisciplined Defense, and when you run into a school that does, you gotta go to the air with it…which is why is surprises the HELL out of me that NFL caliber defenses are playing so undisciplined with this thing and not forcing Tebow to throw…
Raiders did it, Jets Did it, Chargers did it..they all did the same thing..individual players lost their discipline, disregarded what their assignment had been the entire game and had been working, jumped out of their ‘House’, and tried to help their neighbor…
THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT THE TEBOW OFFENSE DOES, IT WAITS FOR YOU TO GET BORED, FRUSTRATED, DOING SOMETHING STUPID, AND BAM, HE’S GOT YOU…Just like ICE MAN in Top Gun..dude, stay with your assignment..
Think of it like having 3 spies..
One guy has the dive back
One guy has the Quarterback
One guy has the pitch back (if there is one on any given play)…
That is it, I swear to GOD..If those guys just glove up to their guy, no matter WHAT HAPPENS, EVERY TIME, EVERY DOWN…This Tebow thing will be over and sent back to whence it came…HIGH SCHOOL..where it belongs.
That is why Denver is barely putting points on the board with this Offense, NFL defenses ARE disciplined till they aren’t 1 or 2 times, and it costs em 7 points, and Denvers D doesn’t suck, so they don’t need many points for a win. Just blows my mind that an NFL defense can’t stay disciplined for 60 full minutes, every play, to stop this Tebow nonsense…
I can only imagine what the film study is like after these teams lose games to that offense..some of the Linebackers, D Ends, and Safeties have to be just hiding under their desks when they see what they have done, and how easy it would have been to stop, had they just stuck to what they were doing instead of trying to “HELP” a teammate..do you f’n job, every single down.
That’s it, there is no mystery to the Tebow Offense, no divine intervention, no touched by the hand of God..Tebow is not beating anyone, DEFENSES ARE BEATING THEMSELVES…
My last post for the rest of my life on the efficacy of the Tim Tebow Sacred Heart Griffin High School Offense circa 1995….
