Jackson doesn’t question team’s mental state

The Raiders team that won three straight games before a 34-14 shellacking at the hands of the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, and it’s the same one that will show up Sunday for a game against the undefeated Green Bay Packers, coach Hue Jackson said.
In other words, don’t question the mental state or psyche of this team.
“Again, we lost one game,” Jackson said. “What mental team’s going to show up is the same mental team that won three games prior to that. I just think that’s an unfair question because everybody’s now questioning what mental team, what’s this, what’s that.”
It’s a matter of the Raiders becoming more consistent and getting on a roll along the lines of the one the Packers did late last season and still are riding.
But, if there aren’t any questions about the Raiders mental state during a winning streak, then there shouldn’t be one after one loss.
“We had a three-game winning streak, and nobody was asking me about the mental of the team then,” Jackson said. “So, why are we going to ask about the mental of the team now?
“Here’s the deal. We need to get back to playing football, go win a football game. Bottom line, no ifs, ands or buts. So, please, when we lose one, I understand all the critics and the things that are going to get asked, but ask me those same things when we win three, and then we got a good thing going.”
Moreover, Jackson said the goal is for the Raiders to become more consistent, so that no one is unsure which team is going to show up each game.
“When we become very consistent football team, then we’ll be something good,” Jackson said. “And that’s what I tell the guys. Win three, which is what you were referring to, and then lose one, win two, and you lose one, that’s what we want to get out of.
“We need to go on a run here. Just like (the Packers) did a year ago. That team was kind of where we were right now, they went on a run, and they’ve stayed on the run.”
FRUSTRATION OVER INJURIES MOUNTS
Jackson said he has given up trying to guess when any of his hurt key players are going to return. For now, he is focused on the players healthy enough to play.
He added that there are so many players hurt that he can’t afford to sit anyone healthy enough to play, even if they aren’t at 100 percent.
“It’s not going to be, I’m going to make a decision because it’s cold, it’s where it is, boy, maybe we shouldn’t play him,” Jackson said. “No, right now we need every guy that we can get back out here on this football team that can contribute and help us win. So, if there’s a player that can be back out here, trust me, we’ll put him back out here.”
Free safety Michael Huff says the Raiders are talented enough to win most games, if not every, even if they aren’t at full strength.
“There’s a lot of games that we still should have won and could have won,” Huff said. “So, we don’t really let the injuries kind of affect us that way. We still feel like every Sunday we should go out there and win, regardless of who’s playing.”
Quarterback Carson Palmer and Jackson say they notice teams attacking the Raiders offense differently without starting receivers Jacoby Ford and Denarius Moore, as well as running back Darren McFadden, not on the field.
It was obvious which players defenses would key against when the aforementioned guys were healthy. Now, the Raiders aren’t sure until the game starts.
“You go into a game plan with a certain guy you’re really focused on, and every team that we play against focuses on a handful of guys offensively for us,” Palmer said. “Normally, it’s Jacoby or Denarius or Darren, and when you don’t have that guy the defense focuses on usually, they turn to somebody else.”
Without several wide receivers and McFadden, it makes it pretty obvious that running back Michael Biush is going to be a focal point of the offense each game, Jackson said.
“At some point in time, teams are going to learn and people know what we are,” Jackson said. “We’re a team that likes to run the ball. So, you’re going to stick eight, nine guys whatever you have to do, up there to stop the run. And people look at the inactives and say, OK, there’s Michael Bush and who else?”
JOHNSON EXCUSED
Cornerback Chris Johnson was excused from practice so that he could fly to Dallas, where he could be with his loved ones in light of a family member dying, Jackson said.
Jackson said Johnson is dealing with a “tragedy” and that he intends to give Johnson all the time he needs. Even so, Jackson said he expects Johnson back in time for the Packers game.
“This is a game of football,” Jackson said. “The thing he’s dealing with is a game of life. We’ll get him back here pretty soon. A very, very tough situation that he’s dealing with. But the organization supports him, I support him, he’ll get back here and be ready to go.”
The Fort Worth Star Telegram reported that Johnson’s sister Jennifer was shot and killed and that his mother Della also got shot by a 46-year-old man who was the father of Jennifer Johnson’s daughter. Della Johnson is expected to survive.
TO BLITZ OR NOT TO BLITZ
Some quarterbacks dread the prospect of a defense blitzing. Then, there are quarterbacks who can’t wait to see the blitz so that they can use it to their advantage.
That small crop of quarterbacks includes the likes of Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Drew Brees and the Green Bay Packers Aaron Rodgers.
This season, Rodgers has feasted on teams that dared blitz him, to the tun of a 149.3 passer rating, with 15 touchdown and only one interception.
Raiders safety Mike Mitchell says he and his defensive mates are going to have ample opportunity to make plays against the Packers, if for no other reason than Rodgers figures to throw the ball a great deal.
“He’s a very poised quarterback,” Mitchell said. “That’s the one thing I’ve seen on film. He doesn’t rattle very easy. He gets the ball out of his hand very quickly. And he really just trusts his one-on-one matchups. When he sees the one-on-one, he thinks that his guy is better than yours.
“So, as a defender, it gets you a little excited because you know that you’re going to get opportunities to play the ball and make game-changing plays. It’s also a lot of pressure because the ball is coming. You got to be on your p’s and q’s.”
Cornerback Stanford Routt says Rodgers has so many reliable options in the passing game that he doesn’t feel compelled to force the ball to a given receiver.
“It’s definitely going to be a good challenge,” Routt said. “He can make every throw on the field, and they’ve got good receivers that have good ball skills, so this is going to be a fun game on Sunday.”
MCFADDEN UPDATE
Jackson says that McFadden has not suffered a setback from the mid-foot sprain he received Oct. 23. Perhaps, but McFadden isn’t making the kind of progress the Raiders expected.
“If anything there’s more positives,” Jackson said, when asked if McFadden suffered a setback. “They’re getting closer, and I wish I could tell you what day and what the percentage is, but I know they’re getting closer.”
Palmer said he heard that this was the week that McFadden would be back. Not sure where he heard that from, but it obviously hasn’t worked out that way.
Palmer and McFadden still haven’t been on the field together since Palmer arrived via trade with the Cincinnati Bengals on Oct. 18. Palmer debuted against the Kansas City Chiefs on Oct. 23, but McFadden already was sidelined with his injury.
“I’m looking forward to that opportunity,” Palmer said. “I heard a couple of weeks ago, that this was going to be the week, but Mike’s done a great job filling in for him. When (McFadden’s) back, he’ll be ready and this team knows that Darren’s doin everything he can to get back on the field.”
WHAT’S IN A NUMBER?
The Packers last lost a game Dec. 19, 2010, when they were without Rodgers and playing a strong New England Patriots team. Their streak stands at 18 games, tied for the second-longest run in NFL history.
PALMER PAST FATIGUE
Missing all of training camp and the first six regular-season games finally caught up with Palmer last week. However, he said he pushed through the fatigue last week and is raring to go the rest of the way.
“The last couple of weeks, I started to feel it, I guess,” Palmer said.
Palmer said he likens what he experienced to a player who hits the wall at some point in training camp.
“You go through training camp and you feel great and then you kind of hit a little bit of a wall and you just got to go through that wall,” Palmer said. “Once you get through that, your body kind of gets used to wear and tear and the movement, and the pounding, and all of that. Fortunately, I’ve got that out of the way, got through that last week, and feel great this week.”

DMC runs hard and runs with violence. He’s been unfortunate to have so many injuries in his first four years.
It didn’t look like a wicked hit or anything like that, but half of them don’t. I’m not in his shoes and I won’t claim to know what kind of pain he’s in.
May not be a question of pain, it may be is he physically able to make the appropriate cuts and weight shifts without causing permanent damage.
His feet are more important to him than anything else.
When he can run — even if that’s at 75% or whatever — then have him come in in and run. If he can’t do it, he can;t do it and would hurt us more than he helps us.

as far as defensively, i think we should not blitz from the secondary, as Rout said Rodgers is going to be pass happy, we need all the db’s playing deep to make plays on the ball. Cb’s should be playing to cut off routes on the sideline as thats as Rodgers is far more productive outside the #’s. with the safteys looking to undercut the inside.

Thing is, he could be 100% healed from his foot injury, yet still not be in football shape which could and probably will lead to another injury. It takes awhile to get in football shape,he’s probably going to miss 3/4s of the season by the time he does come back.
This is why I’m guessing a target date set for his return is for the playoffs assuming we get in.

Winning the division would be much better (higher seed and at least one home game) but I still think we have a better inside track to a wildcard.
Have the tiebreaker over the Jets, and I can see Cincy and the Titans falling apart more so than the Donks.

Fudge Packers are beatable. They are a pass lst team. They use the pass to set up the run. That was something I said we should do in our last game. We didn’t. We lost. The thing that really jumps out is how accurate rodgers is. They do not turn the ball over. How do you beat them? Rodgers is sackable. You can get to him. And if you key on their passing game, and focus on that, their run game is not all that.

GB is absolutely amazing at their ability to convert 3rd downs. Once again, I said this in the last game, that was exactly how Miami won. Their D got off the field on 3rd downs. We did not convert our third down opportunities. Defensively, GB is not all that good. That is their weakness. You have to sustain drives, keep Rodgers off the field and keep the game close.

That is basically their formula for winning: use the pass to set up the run, do not turn the ball over, win the turnover battle, and then turn Matthews loose to wreck havoc once you have a lead. They lead the league in INT’s. If it were me, I would run and pass right at Mathews and make him play his position. Don’t let him run around wrecking havoc.

If you are the Colts and you get the first pick of the draft, assuming Manning’s neck health is no longer an issue, do you trade the pick and stick with Manning as your qb of the foreseeable future, or do you take Luck because of his youth and his ability to call plays (like Manning) and his overall excellence?
My feeling? The Indy fans have grown totally spoiled by having a qb like Manning. Settling for other picks through swapping draft positions and getting multiple players, even great players, will never be the same to the fans as getting another top-notch qb.
Some teams are known for their linebackers (Chicago) while others for their qbs (Green Bay) and I think the Colts will go for Luck.
If he had his druthers, I’d expect a healthy Manning to want to go to a team that plays indoors or one that plays in warm weather, at least.

What the Colt organization and the Colt fans have come to realize is to win in this league and be competitive year in and year out, you HAVE TO HAVE the marquee Q. You must. We might have a chance against GB if DMac, Moore, Ford, Seymour, Romac, SeaBass and other playmakers were healthy & playing. Without them, the chances are so small that even the lemonade won’t help. We are talking about playing, IMO, the Best of the Best.
Again, IMO, the real Super Bowl game this year will be the NFC championship game between GB & N. O. Saints.
Injuries have killed us this year. HuJack did a great job with what he had available. With a couple key new adds, a change to a 3-4 defense and a new DC, we will be serious contenders next year. Not contenders for a division championship or a playoff but the whole banana.

Aaron Rodgers was a very competent QB fight out of Cal. Sitting a couple of years behind Farve certainly didn’t hunt his performance. Many, including myself, would say it helped him immensely. The same would hold true for Luck sitting behind Manning. The education he’d get would be priceless.

Manning isn’t going anywhere. The best thing that can happen to him and Andrew Luck is IF he does come back, for Luck to sit back and watch how Peyton prepares. Remember, Rodgers sat for years, and it did nothing but help him. I don’t think with the severity of Manning’s injury that he could play for 5 more years, but of course, Joe Montana came back from back surgery after doctors told him not to, so I guess anything can happen.

Raiders D-line seems to be playing possum for draws. you notice, we are getting pressure but only what we want, to guard against the draw and like plays. It is to make up for the lack of depth, and skill at LB.
What we need is clear, more talent at the LB position and a real safety.

I mentioned after Sunday’s meltdown, whether the collective psyche of the Raiders had imploded because of the McClain fiasco, including HueJax.
I also said that we were going to get a whole week’s worth of denial.
Now he’s pulling the injury card, isn’t just about every single team in the NFL facing injuries? Maybe HueJax is looking for excuses, not now?
But, HueJax isn’t a doctor he says. but I haven’t heard yet what it is that DMac has? From the start it was something minor, that has become almost season-ending. Or, is he saving DMac for the KC and SD games? Maybe Cork and his 17 years of covering the team will finally break a story, and let us know just what’s going on with DMac.
Judging from Sunday’s collective meltdown, one can only expect the Raiders to turn it around, and give us a heaping serving of pride in GB, one can only expect the best. Will they? Is their best good enough to beat the packers? Any given Sunday, right? But I wouldn’t bet on it.

No team has had the injuries to key players like us, Zopi. It’s not even close. I have hope that we will end 10-6 and win the division. Even the wins have left us scratching our heads, wondering why it took so much effort. Next season is definitely a Super Bowl or bust season.

Raiders MUST run the ball Sunday in order to keep GB off the field and burn clock time, and limit possessions. We need the edge runner if only to keep the defense honest.
To be honest, we can use any speedster like DHB as a RB to get to the edge…and effectuate this dynamic.

Agreed that the very best situation for Luck would be to sit and learn behind Manning, but I’ve a feeling the Colts won’t pay both and I also think that if Luck feels he is destined to sit with the Colts, I think he just might pull the “I won’t go to Indy.”
While Aaron Rodgers was very good at Cal, he wasn’t touted as the polished product that Luck is, and he fell precipitously, going, what, at about #24 in the first round? (I still recall feeling bad for him during that wait, cameras and all on him).

Seems Archie Manning told a reporter he didn’t think his son and Luck would want to be on the same team; the next day or so, he walked back that statement.
I’d like Luck to play for Indy or any team team other than the Niners or a team in our division.
However, the team I’d most like to see him with is Minnesota since a return to greatness for the Vikings, as with the Raiders, is good for the NFL, since he’d have a great runner behind him, and since he’d be out of our conference.
Or, I’d like to see Manning with the Vikings and see that as a possibility if the Colts don’t keep both.

I’d like to see the A’s get a stadium in San Jose, as it’s grown into a great sport’s town with the Sharks and all, and frankly, I’d support the Raiders moving there as well.
I think as long as the Niners, Raiders, A’s, and Giants put competitive teams on the field, that moving Oakland’s teams to San Jose would not rob the SF teams of their support.
I think all could flourish. When the Niners and Giants first claimed the San Jose area as their sphere of influence, the population of East Bay counties such as Contra Costa had not yet exploded. Now that that has happened, I think the SF teams ought not to be “awarded” as large a geographical area as their own.

Dam, I’ve been out of touch for a couple of days. Just found out about this. Tough news for CJ. I can’t imagine losing a sibling, especially like that. It was in east Fort Worth though – not Dallas.

If the Raiders did not have the amoount of key injuries that they currently have, I would say we would have more tham a good chance to beat the Pack.
Since the team is where it is in terms of health, I believe our best shot at winning would be to have a similar game as the one we played against SD last year.

The crying about injuries has to stop! Darius Heyward-Bey is a starting receiver and plenty capable. Chaz can make plays too.
DMAC has been hurt his whole career. The Raiders are plenty used to playing without him and should have been prepared for this eventuality. DMAC averages 9 carries a gm. Period.
The Raiders will win if hue goes strong on the O-Line and Fullback. Also, the so-called superstars on defense have to play to their salaries and have a difference maker game. I am talkin to Seymour, Kelly, Wimbley and Routt. If those 4 provide another Bee Esssss any guy performance. The D is Done.

Any hope in hell the Raiders have in this game depends on pressuring Rodgers without blitzing and also covering the GB 3 and 4 WR sets (plus Finley).
What I’d do is this:
Use Bryant to constantly be spelling Kelly and Seymour. Make Wimbley the full time RDE and tell him to just pin his ears back and go every snap. Use only McClain and Curry at LB and keep 5 DBs out there at all times.(Routt, Sheppard, Huff, Branch, Mitchell)
Basically play permanent nickel. Run that scheme to limit the Packers passing attack and hope the front 4 can generate some natural pressure is probably the only chance I see of keeping it close enough to eek out a victory.

This is a game where Carson Palmer needs to earn his chips. Game plan needs to be no huddle and all on Palmer.
Not going to be easy at all with Ford and Moore out, so it’s going to be on Hue and Saunders to come up with creative ways to get the backs and TEs involved behind the LBs.
Too bad Taiwan Jones is out. Need a running threat that can get to the outside.
