Expert’s take on McFadden’s injury, coach Jackson’s explanation

Raiders running back Darren McFadden has been out of action since he suffered a midfoot sprain Oct. 23. Fifty one days later, we’re nowhere closer to knowing the true severity of the injury or when he might return.
On Sunday, coach Hue Jackson first used the dreaded term Lisfranc injury when asked if McFadden’s injury is more severe than originally disclosed.
On Monday, Jackson said people can call it a midfoot sprain or a Lisfranc injury. Either way, he views it in the same light, he said, and that McFadden does not need surgery.
Rather than speculate, let’s call in ESPN injury analyst Stephania Bell for her take. If you don’t know of Ms. Bell or read her regular columns, you should make a point of doing so. She provides a detailed account of what injuries mean, what the standard procedure is for each injury and how long a player should miss, on average.
Here’s what Bell had to say Tuesday about McFadden’s injury:

“Things still don’t look good. The poor outlook noted at the start of last week has become grimmer as another week has passed with no obvious signs of progress from McFadden. If anything, there is less clarity about McFadden’s injury than ever. On Sunday, CBS analyst Phil Simms commented that McFadden was dealing with a Lisfranc injury. Steve Corkran of the Contra Costa Times best captures the semantics issue around the term “Lisfranc” and coach Hue Jackson’s response as it relates to McFadden in his Monday post on the topic.

In an attempt to interpret the cause of the confusion, it should be noted that the term Lisfranc is an anatomical description of a region of the foot, specifically a complex joint comprising the bones and ligaments that connect the midfoot to the forefoot. An injury in this area could technically be called a midfoot sprain or a Lisfranc injury, and both would be correct. Injuries range from minor ligament tearing involving a single joint to multijoint severe injuries including fracture and dislocation. The latter type require surgery to fix; the former do not.

As Lisfranc injuries have become more common in the NFL and have led to season-ending surgeries for some (Ronnie Brown, Dwight Freeney and most recently Matt Schaub), when the term is used, the implication is that the athlete has suffered the most severe, season-ending variety. That degree of injury does not always result. Since the Raiders insist McFadden does not need surgery, it would appear that his injury is of the less severe type and that, perhaps, is why the term “Lisfranc” was avoided. For any injury to the midfoot, it is important that full healing occur in order to restore normal gait and prevent future problems, which can render the recovery process slow. In McFadden’s case, his recovery appears to be taking longer than the Raiders initially projected it would, adding to the frustration of all looking from the outside in. At this point, despite Jackson’s statement that he expects McFadden to return, it’s hard to imagine a full-strength McFadden resurfacing within the next three weeks.”

Horton not so much, Fredrickson was a good OLB.

Do I think Chuck B is a good defensive coordinator ?
    Hell no.

Do I think he takes way too much heat and blame for the Raider defensive inadequacies ?
    Hell yes.

Another DCO might be able to get more out of this group, but the truth is we’ve got some non-performing turds on defense that limit how effective the defense can be as a unit.

I could beat Rolando in a 50 yard dash – running backwards. Couple his lack of foot speed with a questionable commitment to being the best player he can be, and you’ve got a major problem at perhaps the most important position on defense.

Mike Huff is an overpaid, non-impact, inconsistent, weak tackling safety. Re-signing him to a long term, big dollar deal was a mistake.

Dick Seymour has regressed so badly, he’s almost non-existent for weeks on end. His proclivity for personal fouls, ejections and penalties has been a liability. And this is supposed to be the leader of this group ? Give me a break.

So, not to defend Chuckie B, but when your (supposedly) ‘best’ defensive lineman, LB, and Safety aren’t bringing it or providing the necessary leadership, your defense isn’t going to get the job done.

The Raids DO have some good players on defense. I think Wimbley, Routt, and Branch are solid players. Houston, Bryant, Curry, MattS, are young and hopefully on the rise. Kelly has some moments.

This unit could not only use a better coordinator, it also desperately needs the infusion of more talent. It lacks an impact player and on the field leadership.

It also would help if Carson Palmer pulls his head out of his sphincter and stops throwing ridiculous interceptions which puts even more pressure on an overmatched D.

Sad its come to this….Hue wasnt forthright with this or our team medical guys suck majorly
    ******************
I really dont believe that is the case. This type of injury is a wait and see kind of thing, when DMAC came out of the boot and tried to put weight on the foot it seems it flared back up, which was unexpected. If the medical staff told Hue right away there was no chance of DMAC coming back, or that it would be at least 8 weeks I think Hue would have IRed him and picked someone up to lighten the load. I dont think anyone expected it to take this long.

Better to have a guy who can contribute when the season is on the line. For three seasons, McFadden has not been that guy. Even when he’s in, he’s not unstoppable. So why not get some draft picks for him, and use those draft picks to A) build up other parts of the team that desperately need new talent, and B) get another running back or two who, while they might not be as dynamic as McFadden, can spell Bush and are more likely to be healthy when the Raiders need them to be?
    **************************************************************************
If you wanted to go that route you could just start Bush and have DMC spell him, but nobody would really do that. And he has been pretty much unstoppable when he is in..hell the whole team stopped since he left.

    I have to admit.

I am a huge Patriot fan this weekend.

Some in here hate him, but I think Tom Brady is one of the best ever to step on the field, although I hate that franchise.

I wasn’t just talking about our game against Green Bay genius. I was talking about in general, week to week. You may call it an excuse when you lose a few of you starters here and there, but when you lose ALL of your offensive weapons at the same damn time it is not an excuse it is a direct REASON for losing.

I notice you have developed a penchant for glossing over facts lately Rock…

    ——————-

There have been a number of games where DMac has been ineffective, or has just looked ordinary. Teams that are good at sealing the edge and have some speed at OLB and DE. 49ers, Colts, and Dolphins all shut him down last season when he was healthy.

So, try to re-sign Bush. Jones, when healthy, can be the token part-time perimeter runner. Draft a couple other guys who can take some hits and make some yards. They might not be home-run hitters, but good defenses (Ravens, Steelers, et al) won’t let McFadden hit home runs anyway.

The Buffalo game from this year reminds me of the importance of what happened against Arizona last year when Jano missed all three kicks. It was like getting kicked in the nuts..I couldn’t believe it. I am STILL f’ing stunned by it…Just like the Tuck Rule..Ill never forget it..

The Buffalo game and the epic Defensive meltdown is just as significant as that game. You CANNOT give away games in the NFL, this isn’t baseball, there aren’t 162 freakin games..

This is a MUST WIN…If we lose the season will be over, plain and simple.

If we can’t beat the Lions at Home, with EVERYTHING ON THE LINE..we don’t deserve to be in the playoffs anyway.
