McFadden, Ford not practicing once again
By Steve Corkran
Thursday, December 22nd, 2011 at 11:51 am in Oakland Raiders.
Running back Darren McFadden and wide receiver Jacoby Ford are not practicing today. That all but eliminates any chance they have of playing Saturday against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Official word should come in about 90 minutes, when coach Hue Jackson speaks with the media after practice. However, Jackson has a long history of not playing anyone who doesn’t practice the week before a game.
Free safety Michael Huff is riding a stationary bike right now. That makes it conceivable that he intends to join the fray once the Raiders convene for full-team drills. He has not practiced all week. Jackson said Huff needs to practice today if he is to play Saturday.
Defensive tackle John Henderson missed practice once again because of a sore knee. So, don’t count on him playing, either, given he hasn’t practiced at all the past two weeks.
Wide receiver Louis Murphy is back on the field after missing Wednesday’s practice because of “tightness” in an undisclosed body part.
Denarius Moore and T.J. Houshmandzadeh are fielding punts in practice today, with Bryan McCann handling kick returns. Not sure why Tyvon Branch isn’t getting any reps on kick returns after Jackson raved about Branch’s ability in that capacity.

I hope RGIII doesn’t go pro. If the Raiders have a 1st rounder in 2013, they can package it with their 2014 1st rounder and a bunch of other picks and move up to get their QB of the future. Give him a couple years to work with Palmer and Pryor, and you (finally) have a good problem at QB.

TJ back adds a rb threat that can get to the outside with our much improved pass game =win. Next week get Ford back adding to our already dynamic O =win. Round one of the playoffs get DMAC back teams are relegated to trying to outscore us= contenders

December 22nd, 2011 at 11:59 am
Resigned to the fact that we (realistically) won’t make the playoffs after things looked so promising. So at this point, just want to see some good football, good play from players I would consider to be on the bubble. And Slow-lando is at the top of the list. Defense is the key, just look at the Niners, and it all starts at MLB in my opinion, the QB of the defense. Can you imagine if we had a leader and a game changer at that position.

Hey Steve, why don’t we assume that McFadden won’t practice again until, I don’t know, mini-camp.
In fact, you can start working on your coverage for next summer of McFadden’s feet. Why are they so fragile? What kind of foot therapy does he get? What sandals and flip-flops does he wear in the off-season? Can’t Under Armour or Nike make special shoes for him?
McFadden might be able to get a sponsorship deal with Dr. Schollls if he can keep his footsies healthy. Or maybe Nike can produce a special Darren McFadden Walking Boot.

I’ve always hated Tommy Kelly, he just strikes me as a bad egg. Anyone that says we should cut Rolando, but is impressed with how much DHB has grown is an idiot without any perspective. Rolando is 22 years old, give him another year, with a REAL DC. He will be a beast. Watch

I’m convinced now that McClain’s future lies as a Ted ILB role in a 3-4. Ie, playing the same role as Patrick Willis does. Stuffing gaps, tackles for losses, penetrating the A gap.

yeah, he’s too slow, and he has motivational problems on the field, he goes half-hearted thru slabs of minutes, and for all his acclaimed study often badly diagnoses plays or is too hesitant.
i just think he’s more of a liability as a 4-3 Mike than as a 3-4 Ted — where he’s mainly stuffing the A gap, or blitzing the A or B. Spending most of his time close up to the line. As in, to resurrect his play, get the most out of him, a scheme like that would be more suitable. Whether it’s us who runs it or he ends up with another team, imo watch and see that become his role.

unfortunately i can agree with this too. For instance, who would you take to outsmart the other, make better half-time adjustments, ensure his key playmakers keep getting involved. Romeo Crennel or Hue Jackson?
I hope im wrong, i want us to smash the Chiefs etc. But i do feel uneasy or unsure of our team. And also because yet another heart-breaking loss (on the back of two disgraceful blow-outs) the team might mail it in, or not truly believe anymore, plus elements like clowning it up (boyd), undisciplined, maybe even lockerroom mumblings Hue and the players etc.

December 22nd, 2011 at 12:29 pm
And to bring up a previous point i made last blog article…why a team should be keen to play the elite teams and lift in every way to compete equally and beat them. Look at the Chiefs recent resume (beating undefeated Packers), that’s a huge confidence and tough in the guts builder. Whereas compare to our recent resume of games and even wins (scratchy wins against injured vikes, bears, browns), blow outs to dolphins and packers, and a mostly competitive game against a top team (lions).
That last game at least was better, save for the soft loss at the end, and i guess there’s proof there we can towel the Chiefs if we come ready and play smart/hard the whole 60 mins.

This is exactly right. It’s unreasonable to write a kid off after 30 games. You do want to see improvement tho. McClain did not play poorly the last game. He was probably a C player his lst year. And a C- player this year. That is what concerns me.

Like I said before.
First and foremost, the Raiders will need to hire a GM/Head of Player Personnel ASAP. After the season ends!
Once the regular season ends they need to ask persmission to interview Packers Personnel guy Reggie McKenzie and Ravens Personnel guy Eric DeCosta.
None of this waiting to hire someone until the end of Feburary or March crap!
They need to get the process started ASAP and hire someone before the Super Bowl if they can do it!
By doing that, the new GM/Personnel guy can get together with the coach and figure out the plan to improve this team ASAP and whether or not they plan to switch to a 3-4 scheme and if they can resign Bush!
If they plan on going to a 3-4, then they to look at how the Texans did during their offseason this year and follow that same plan of attack!

Hell, we could’ve IR’d Jacoby by now, cause if we are eliminated this weekend, he and DMac aren’t coming back. so true. this is like the constant Hue-speak of “we have x weeks left to fix [insert problems] and we will because i have a vision and im the center of attention, etc”.
but the play-calling remains predictable, the D lack of discipline remains, the stupid pre-snap and post-whistle penalties, the clowning about, the poor execution, the poor preparation and half-time adjustments, the hot hands left cold, etc.

yep, want to also thank everyone who has contributed the last bunch of hours to the debates and conversations. there’s no better and knowledgable fanbase in all of the NFL (truly honestly) than RaiderNation.
^^^^^^^
I think most Nation are knowledgable are rational with the thinking of what this team needs to do to take it the next level.
Hire Reggie McKenzie or Eric DeCosta as GM/then they can hire some quality scouts to add to the department and then they can evaluate with Huey where the team is at how to improve the DEFENSE and how add quality players to the defensive side of the ball. They must also figure out if they can resign Bush!

but the play-calling remains predictable, the D lack of discipline remains, the stupid pre-snap and post-whistle penalties, the clowning about, the poor execution, the poor preparation and half-time adjustments, the hot hands left cold, etc.

The biggest problem is that Hue cant be creative with Bush back there and DMoore/Ford banged up. He has no speed. Its either an end around…Bush up the middle…or slant/curl route

Mis-plays of the year
Tyvon Branch letting a sure interception go through his arms in the end zone for a Buffie TD.
JaSoup throwing a horrible interception in the end zone just before halftime against the Pewks.
Allowing Kyle Boller to put on a helmet.
Aaron Curry personal foul as TBone runs out of bounds way short of the needed yardage on 3rd and 20.
Leaving the team hotel in Miami.
Carson Palmer’s panicked interception on the first series against Green Bay.
Carson Palmer overthrowing the wide open in the end zone Denarius Moore.

Poor Coaching and Poor Game Day Management…

So d-mac does some light jogging and has to take a day off to recover?
Yet Hue keeps insisting that he’ll play this season.
How stupid does he think we are?
Someone needs to stick a fork in d-mac’s fragile a$$.
As for all this talk about trading him, what would we get for a running back who can’t run?

yep yep yep. grrrr. and it’s the same routine especially start of games. he comes out tentative, wanting to avoid aggressive plays, avoid making mistakes, being clutch, truly surprising DCs, trying to bludgeon a lead early, and always results in the first drive being a meek 3 and out, followed by the opposing team running and passing downfield at will, making first downs at will, scoring easy/quickly, then we go back out there dives and slants and curls and end-arounds, for another 3 and out, then we’re quickly down 14-0.
No site of stuff like 2 back sets with Bush-Dmac, or Bush-Jones, fake end-around HB passes, Bush counter option toss to Dmac the other way, Pryor getting in at WR, maybe a curl pass then lateral to Ford coming thru, he often said there’s plenty more creativity in the playbook that hasn’t been shown, but there’s been a dearth of anything else shown.
Hue was much better as an OC last year. He made it known start of season how this is his offense and playbook, so Saunders is being wasted if true.
December 22nd, 2011 at 1:34 pm
So it comes down to one game. This is our super bowl game. players should be frothing at the mouth to get out there and play to win. No more soft d at the end of games chuckie.

Someone was very astute many blogs ago posting the phrase “Peter Principle”.
Clear positions above and below in a chain of command, with each delegated certain roles, is the more effective use of employed coaching staff. Hue as everything, especially as a rookie HC, with a hand in every jar, counter-productive.

Yes indeed, or we could package Mr. Pryor in a trade to move into the first round this year.

Exactly….and more often than not; it’s the same cats who think Carson Palmer is the best thing that happened to the Raiders since Tim Brown…too many folks are not realizing that if Hue gets the boot; Carson will too. No way they clean house halfway and keep that high dollar contract on board. I’m pulling for Hue and Carson (solely because he’s in there…would rather start the Pryor era truthfully), but I’m smart enough to know they’re tied at the hip. When one goes, the other is quick to follow….
December 22nd, 2011 at 1:43 pm
Not to accept mediocrity and failure across so many aspects…penalties, undiscipline, terrible personnel moves, schemes, pre-game plans, post-game rhetoric, unfulfilled promises, etc, they are there. This season was set up for a 2+ game improvement from 8-8, and a division title. We could still get it, so there’s hope for Hue yet. But this year has been a failure. And again, things like icons passing away, and injuries to key-players are not excuses. Many teams go thru the same and overcome them.
December 22nd, 2011 at 1:43 pm
What did Hue ever really say?
He wants his team to be a bully.
He wanted Palmer because he knows what he’s getting.
He wanted TJ because he knows what he’s getting and wanted him in camp over Hagan.
He said he’s trying to get the penalties figured out.
He says he’s not happy with 7-7.
He said he thinks McFadden will be back this year but he’s not a doctor.
When has Hue been deceptve EVER this season?

the post-game rhetoric i mean is all the deflecting of owning up to his specific failures or failed decisions and blaming stuff on other things, and the rex ryanisms. hue can be very candid, intelligent, and funny, and obviously there are many things a HC has to be coy and tactical about, etc. the main problem i have with him is the deflecting of his own specific bad decisions etc, and his self-promotional speak that is geared towards getting RaiderNation to associate with him, to see him as a leader and heir of Al’s ways, which is understandable too.

im not anti-Hue, in that respect, him coming back could be fine. as long as hue is truly UNDER the GM, not the raiders going along with Hue’s vision and handing him a tailor-made GM for him like a Millen etc.
Also, whilst it’s very true about the DC and GM thing, you cannot say the offense has not been a major problem too, and in many ways or games worse than the D. When a team has serious problems, it occurs right thru every facet and position. Where Hue is rightly copping anger is that he is the HC who over-sees the entire on-field, from pre-game to next pre-game.
We can pardon Hue, tho we didn’t pardon Cable. I didnt like Cable much, much less than Hue. Im okay with Hue getting another opportunity. The worry is that whole “next year syndrome” and with an autonomous GM that makes Hue almost a lame duck HC like Mangini in Holmgren’s first year, especially if we start off bad, it will implode.

I was more concerned about the deep ball on the 3rd down to ice the game. Very curious call. Al Saunders called that same play against Chicago, which ended up winning the game. The issue I have is it is a low percentage play. I LOVE the pass call, because I don’t think we passed the ball once that drive. The Lions had come up in run support on the 3rd and short. Going deep was just not the right call there. A shorter or medium pass was. Not going for two?? Foolish.

Hue does not have his hand in every jar. Not even close.
He didn’t draft these athletes.
He’s been hands off the defense from pre-Davis to post-Davis.
He had no say in these athletes not being allowed to learn modern-day zone defense the last 3 decades.
He didn’t waste a 1st rounder on an aging Seymour and put him out-of-position as a 4-3 DT.
He didn’t cause injuries to his starting QB, RB, WR1, WR2, and starting safety.
He didn’t let Nnamdi walk for nothing, and fail to replace the infamous “$15 million” for 3 players.
December 22nd, 2011 at 2:20 pm
We cant keep hiring and firing coaches, but the reason we could now is a new legit GM, as the previous one towards the end wasn’t fully accountable, didnt have scholarships, etc, and not operating (naturally at 80 yo) at full capability. When we had Al in those end-years, we needed a stabilizing HC, and not hiring/firing them like he did.
But if we do get a genuine legit and autonomous GM, then another HC and thus scheme/etc change is reasonable whether he blows it up 2011 or end of 2012.
Hue did get too high for his britches, did make it more about himself etc, and has let things get out of hand, taken more control than he is qualified for, and there has been lockerroom rumblings etc that can be seen in comments here and there.
We can all agree at least that there are problems inside the football department, some stemming from Bres, some from the clowns in the team, some from Hue, some from other background parties interfering, etc. Things aren’t progressing upwards, as the on-field results have shown (many near losses to bad and injured teams, many blowouts to better teams that genuine playoff contenders dont let happen, at least not often). These same problems exist in other orgs currently like the Giants-Coughlin, Bucs-Morris, etc. That’s always sign of internal sh^t going on.
Again, the imperative to install a top-shelf autonomous GM and let him fully decide everything below, however he sees fit, Hue or no Hue, lots of player there or cut, i dont care what, as long as we install that system then we increase the orgs chances of success and growth.

When we had Al in those end-years, we needed a stabilizing HC, and not hiring/firing them like he did….this downward spiral started with Gruden’s departure. If only Al and Gruden/Allen could’ve better co-existed and/or Gruden not wanted to leave for greener pastures, even if Gruden eventually left say 2007/2008/2009, because he sucked, we at least would’ve been better off w-l wise, and could have transitioned better 2011 when Al passed away and we NOW had to bring in a new GM who had to blow it up.

if the GM ends up a Millen or weak kind of GM, as a Hue partner, equal footing, just to “help along” and give support etc, that’s not good and also sign of lingering internal power/vision struggles. There are many Raider Football things that should never change, the uniforms etc, and maintaining the quick strike, power blocking, speed-height-weight-strength, QB pressure, disrupting the passing game, press man coverage etc, but better blended in with modern schemes and packages, and defensive trickery and versatility, etc. And thru hiring the best and creative coaches, impressive qualifications etc. Just like any large company pawing thru piles of candidates to scoop up the cream of the crop, the future trend-setters and shakers. Not bed and breakfast type “he can tolerate Al and run his systems for cheap pay and happy to have a job in the NFL bottom-tier type coaches, from HC all the way thru to positional coaches” thing.
December 22nd, 2011 at 2:48 pm
Alex7…
Cant say Hue is “great” offensive-minded coach. He’s learning the ropes very much still. X&O wise especially. Hue is promising as an OC/HC. Definitely. Does not compare whatsoever to Cable, who was a hire as stated above.
We have a number of great young talent, but like shown in the previous blog, push comes to shove there about 11 keepers on D, and about 15 keepers on offense. 26/53 sure-fire keepers. There’s a lot left over from there to upgrade the roster (at other starting positions and back-ups to push the starters/depth). There are a handful more players that could/should be retained under better coaching that can be improved upon. Then a number more (the rest) who are very expendable.
There’s hope, and as shown often in other orgs, very do-able to turn a team around quickly. But it again relies on the top-down GM thing. Because there are many other orgs who continue to try to turn it around quickly (thru top-down GMs that are lower-shelf quality, and/or thru poor coaching hires (main down to positional), like McDaniels HC Broncos, or McDaniels OC Rams, etc.
One more time….realistically and I expect it too, Hue will return, and Palmer, and 75% of the roster, and a GM will endeavor to patch it up with only 2 draft picks, but if Hue fails again, even early/mid season, it can get blown up if the GM is truly autonomous and there’d be nothing wrong with that IF that happened.
