Raiders 16, Chiefs 13, OT

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Saturday, December 24th, 2011 at 2:18 pm in Oakland Raiders.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. _ Sebastian Janikowski kicked a 36-yard field goal on the first possession in overtime as the Raiders remained in the thick of the playoff race with a 16-13 win over the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium.

Janikowski’s kick was set up by a 53-yard strike from Carson Palmer to Darrius Heyward-Bey to the Kansas City 23, with a pair of Michael Bush runs setting up the game winner and touching off a Raiders celebration.

Combined with a loss by Denver in Buffalo, the Raiders pulled into a first-place tie in the division race at 8-7, but will need the Broncos to lose to the Chiefs next to win the title _ provided Oakland closes out with a win against San Diego.

Oakland also remains in the hunt for a wild card berth, although they’re a game back of the Cincinnati Bengals at 9-6.

The Raiders defense, which gave up 71 and 98 yards in touchdown drives to the Lions in last week’s 28-27 loss, allowed Kansas City to go 80 yards in five plays in 1:53 to tie the score 13-13 on a 3-yard touchdown pass from Kyle Orton to Dwayne Bowe.

It came after the Raiders took a 13-6 lead on a 32-yard field goal by Janikowski, a short-field drive set up when Oakland stuffed Jackie Battle on fourth-and-1 from the Chiefs 43-yard line.

Following a Raiders’ three-and-out, Kansas City got itself back in position for a game-winning 49-yard field goal attempt by Ryan Succop with five seconds left only to have Trevor Scott block the attempt at the gun. Had Succop converted the kick, the Raiders playoffs hope would have been over.

For all the Raiders penalties, the most costly came in the first half and erased a perfectly executed 36-yard touchdown pass from Shane Lechler to Brandon Myers on a 53-yard fake field goal attempt by Sebastian Janikowski.

Lechler took the snap and pitched a shovel pass to Myers, who was running from left to right, and turned the corner to score what appeared to be a game-altering touchdown.

Unfortunately, the snap came a fraction after the play clock had hit zero, with the Raiders absorbing a painful delay of game penalty that hurt even worse when Janikowski’s ensuing 58-yard field goal attempt hit the crossbar.

The Raiders took a quick 3-0 lead as Bryan McCann returned the opening kickoff 91 yards to the Buffalo 14, with the Raiders failing to capitalize with a touchdown and settling for a 28-yard field goal by Janikowski.

The Chiefs tied it 3-3 on Ryan Succop’s 29-yard field goal, set up by a Derrick Johnson interception of Palmer when the Oakland quarterback was hit by a defender as he threw.

if jasoup cant catch dhb in stride i doubt palmer could, still dhb got it though!

Why? Palmer is a much better QB, Passer, and FB player. He thinks much faster too.

GOOD NEWS FELLAS….When it’s a 3team tie breaker; the rules are slightly altered. We have both the Jets and Titans edged with strength of victory. All we need is the Bengals to lose to the Ravens and to handle biz ourselves and we can snag the wildcard, though I’d much rather us win the division and host a game.

I am not sure how it is going to happen however, somehow we are going to get into the tournament…

Palmer was huge in the 2nd half and OT!!! He is a winner!!!

  • Raider E

If we win and Denver wins, the head to head, division, and conference records are all tied. The tie breaker is common opponents that we lose on. Basically the Miami games. They won and we lost. Broncos 4-4 in common games. We are 3-5 with Miami being the difference. Funny thing is we both won and lost to the exact same teams as far as non divisional common opponents games.

  • olinesux

i agree palmer is better but he doesnt have the arm strength that soup has….

  • alex7

goodness Cable has turned that Seattle run game around.

  • JT

Denver got exposed blown out today, and the chiefs have a better defense…

OR Denver was looking ahead to chiefs game that determines division champ.

    +++++++++++

Yeah, Palmer just throws the deep balls somewhere in the field of play, whereas JC throws them 5 yeards out of bounds.

    oline,

are you AIMING for worst comments of the year? Kind of a last-minute effort?

JC was nicknamed “captain checkdown” in Washington for a reason, and it wasn’t arm strength.

Man we could have been up 1 had we won last week

  • YoungAmerican

Arm strength is very, very, very overrated. Decision-making and accuracy are what makes a QB.

JC makes safer choices with the ball, but sometimes the safe choice isn’t necessarily the right one. Carson makes a lot more bad decisions, but he’ll make plays that JC doesn’t.

Accuracy is where Carson is clearly superior to JC, but he has to get better with his decision-making for his accuracy to matter.

or in Buffalo. That one was in the bag. 20 point lead.

KC is a lesser opponent and we gave them every chance to beat us
BIG TIME WIN none the less

  • Raider E

Two things we got going for us. Orton has got to want to beat the Broncos badly and Ravens are trying to keep the second seed in the AFC.

not talking just about the deep ball guys, i like palmer better than jacheckdown and jaouttabounds thrower but compare the out route throws, curls slants…palmers throws have more elevation and take a bit longer to get there. doesnt mean anything until someone sits on the route….

  • Thec07

We should get back JFORD for next weeks game against the disc…

  • http://ibabuss.com antispy3

#105, you’re on the right track.

But, due to DMAC’s injury history I think a second this year & a conditional; as high as your requested first & third (likely linked to a playoff-superbowl scenario). . .

So, let’s say for sake of argument the Vikings emerge as that team and the Raiders draft Lamar Miller of Miami. 5’11″, 212 with a world class burst. Not quite DMAC’s movement skills but combines with Bush & Jones you have a relatively cheap expenditure @ RB. . .

And the Raiders meet the Vikings in the accompanying Superbowl. . .

    I can dream, can’t I?

  • nwr8r

Point Chuck B in the direction of a good rib joint in KC and ditch him. Team leaves on the plane while he’s got BBQ sauce all over his face.

  • Thec07

I can tell you this, we get DMAC back for the Disc game, we will make some noise in the tournament…
