Jackson satisfied with ‘opportunity’ to snare playoff berth
By Steve Corkran
Monday, December 26th, 2011 at 4:23 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Long-time Raiders such as defensive tackle Tommy Kelly, cornerback Stanford Routt and free safety Michael Huff are on the brink of playing a meaningful game this late in the season for the first time in their NFL careers.
Coach Hue Jackson said Monday that he and his players are grateful for the opportunity to play for one of six spots in the AFC Playoffs, be it as the AFC West champion or the second wild-card berth.
“There’s been a struggle to get to this position,” Jackson said. “(Everybody) knows this. It’s been well documented. But at the end of the day, to say that at the last game of the regular season, that you have a chance to have something special happen, that we’ve all talked about since Day 1, that’s what you want.”
Jackson says his players understand what’s at stake. How they prepare this week counts for just as much, if not more, as how they play Sunday.
To that end, Jackson and his coaches are making sure that the players approach practice, film study and everything else in the proper manner.
“I don’t bring up the playoff stuff, I bring up preparation,” Jackson said. “How we prepare every week is what gives you a chance. How you practice and get ready for a game.”
PALMER’S PLAY KEY
Jackson still is working on getting across to quarterback Carson Palmer the importance of throwing away the ball or even taking a sack when a play breaks down and there isn’t an attractive alternative.
Palmer succeeded so well in that regard against the Detroit Lions, one week after he was intercepted four times by the Green Bay Packers. On Sunday, Palmer had two passes intercepted in the first half.
On the first one, Jackson said Palmer was trying to throw away the ball, but the ball “sailed” on him after he got hit in the process of throwing.
The second one came when Palmer attempted a deep pass, with three Chiefs defenders in position to make a play on the ball. Those are the ones that bother Jackson.
“It goes back to a point, sometimes you don’t even have to throw it away,” Jackson said. “I told him, and he understands, and he will, sometimes you just take the sack. And I’m OK with it. Our opportunity to win a championship is tied to our ability to take care of the ball and to get turnovers. That’s what we have to do.”
At the same time, Jackson said, Palmer is to be commended for a 61-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Denarius Moore in the third quarter and a 53-yarder to Darrius Heyward-Bey in overtime.
“How about that pass to Denarius Moore? Have you guys seen a prettier long ball than that? No,” Jackson said. “How about the one to Darrius Heyward-Bey in overtime? Look, I have great expectations of Carson, but he’s human, just like the rest of us and every now and then, things do happen.
But the guy is playing good enough football for us to win and that’s what matters. I’ll shape him up and get him to where he needs to be here in the next week so that we can play good.”
Jackson said Palmer’s play is a big reason why the Raiders are in the position they are in right now.
JANIKOWSKI DESERVES PRO BOWL SELECTION
Jackson said he will be “disappointed” if kicker Sebastian Janikowski isn’t selected to the Pro Bowl on Tuesday.
Janikowski is in the midst of, perhaps, the best season of his 12-year NFL career. He had solid seasons in the past, yet wasn’t selected. Jackson thinks Janikowski is the only logical choice in the AFC.
“The guy is the best kicker in football,” Jackson said. “Are you kidding me? In my opinion, hands down. If he doesn’t make the Pro Bowl this year, then something is wrong. He should already have stock over there in the Pro Bowl and he doesn’t. He should. I’d be very disappointed if his name doesn’t show up. He’s as good as there is in football. Period.”
PENALTIES PERPLEXING JACKSON
Jackson won’t mind the Raiders setting the league records for penalties and penalty yards, under one condition: that the Raiders make the playoffs.
The Raiders committed 155 penalties for 1,294 yards through their first 15 games. They are four penalties and 11 yards, respectively, away from eclipsing the NFL records, set by the 1998 Kansas City Chiefs.
“It’s disappointing,” Jackson said. “I don’t have the answer, obviously. I talk to the team about it all the time. I don’t just talk. I yell, I scream, I threaten. I’ve done everything. I get a bunch of letters of people telling me other things I should try, too. And please don’t send any new ones because those things don’t work.
“But we’re going to continue to work at it. I get frustrated. I’m very frustrated by it because that’s something I don’t believe in. I don’t believe that you can be a champion and continue to get those kind of penalties.”
Jackson promised to get the problem under control by season’s end. He’s out of fresh ideas for how to fix the issue that surfaced in the regular-season opener, when the Raiders committed 15 penalties, and continued through Sunday’s game, when they tacked on 15 more for 92 yards.
He said he isn’t running from the issue, that he is searching for something that works. Eventually, it is going to get sorted out, he believes.
“At some point in time, it’s going to go the right way for us,” Jackson said. “And just like anything else, if you continue to work at it, you make it an area of emphasis and you continue to do so, something good’s going to come out of it. When it’s going to happen, I can’t tell you. … Our players understand that, in order to play good, you need to play penalty-free football. But that’s not who we are right now. That’s my fault.”
INJURIES UPDATE
Jackson has no idea whether running backs Darren McFadden and Taiwan Jones and wide receiver Jacoby Ford will be able to play Sunday. He won’t have a firm idea until Wednesday, when he sees whether any of them are able to practice for the first time in a long while.
One thing is certain: Jackson won’t play anybody who isn’t able to practice this week. He also said that he won’t allow someone to play Sunday just because it’s a big game.
“If they’re healthy enough to play, then they’re going to play.” Jackson said. “If a guy could play this week, he should have been able to play last week. That’s the way I see it.”
JACKSON’S THOUGHT PROCESS
Care to know what Jackson was thinking as Janikowski’s 36-yard field-goal attempt sailed through the uprights against the Chiefs to give the Raiders a 16-13 overtime victory over the Chiefs?
Plenty, as it turns out.
“I was praying,” Jackson said. “I’m not going to kid you.”
Jackson added that he keeps the faith, even when others are quick to abandon ship and give up on his team.
“I have faith in what we’re trying to do here,” Jackson said. “I always have, even when (others) have always doubted us, and I understand that, and deservedly so. When I say that, deservedly so. I understand that. But I’m a man of faith, and I believe in things. I have unquestionable belief in what we’re trying to do. And it doesn’t look pretty all the time. It’s not sexy, it’s not what everybody wished that it is, but it’s the way we are, and it’s the way we are right now.”

Palmer isn’t that stupid Hue.
There were times when he needed to eat the ball but he was just trying to make something happen after a crappy play call.
Jerry gives Palmer a B- on the last game based mostly on those two beautiful long throws and I agree McDonald–although Moore made a real nice catch.

I will take the playoffs any way that I can get them, but I think I would prefer the Raiders as a wild card team. I think they would be better off going to Houston against their 3rd string QB rather than at home against either the Steelers or the Ravens. Your thoughts?

Someone said yesterday, and I agree, that it might be better to see the Steelers earlier while Big Bens ankle is still gimpy

The key to winning this game is to play so nasty in the first half that the Charger players start thinking about next years paycheck.

Think the Raids need to diversify and show some 3-4, (whatever it takes to keep the enemy off balance) but I’m old school and still think the 4-3 should be the foundation.
Even with Hendu probably being done and Seymour having a year or two left, we’ve still got some horses up front.
It’ll be interesting to see what direction the Raids take on this one.

I’ll take a good run stuffing 3/4 and 4 man and intertwine as necessary, keeping O’s off balance and trying to game plan, anyday! Hue, get er done!

These are not the Raiders of yesterday for sure. But winning Sunday and going into the post season can do a lot for the future of this team. If they can win it all, they’ll have a ton of confidence and swagger going into the next season. If we don’t get very far in the play-offs, the hunger will be there next season. So it is a win/win situation. But first things first.

I’d always rather win the Division title (to add to our trophy cabinet), and would rather face the Steelers @ Oakland, than visit the Texans.
Remember, we’re not always reliable run-stoppers, and tho we managed to silence Foster last time, silencing him constantly will be hard to do. The guy is an animal inside the tackles and is very skilled receiving threat.
I’d prefer to face the Steelers, knock the stuffing out of them, be the ones who ended their post-season, then go and meet Ravens/Patriots, Flacco is always shaky in the post-season, and we also get a shot to exact revenge on the 10th Anniversary of the Tuck Game vs Patriots.

I think Hue is going to sharpen his pencil in the off season and be a ton of a better HC next year. If it wasn’t for his inadequate D cordinator, we’d be much better than we are now. I think Hue has already had a taste and will prepare the guys right. But getting into the post season will be huge. Very huge.

I’m sorry to say it but “if” the Raiders make the playoffs all we, the fans, will get out of it is a first round loss. I would almost prefer to have them beat SD and have Denver beat KC. At least that way the last game of the season will be a win. No way they make it to the SB so by making the play-offs their last game is guaranteed, by me, to be a loss.

The NFL wants the Raiders in the playoffs more than the Titans and Bengals, that’s for sure.
Not the Jets though.
The media and NFLN has done all kinds of features on us this year, with the Al passing, Hue, CP trade, etc.
Titans are the most boring potential playoff team ever, with a no-name coach and zero media exposure this year.
Bengals can’t sell out this weeks game and are an embaressment.

B,
Excited as hell about the Brandon Rush trade.
That was a great pickup. Ish Smith looked real good last night as well I thought.
Curry was a hot mess, and Monta was clanking everything, including FT’s.
December 26th, 2011 at 5:52 pm

December 26th, 2011 at 5:53 pm
Yeah Ish is quick..liked him at Wake Forest….B Rush is a good trade…warriors got depth…curry will be fine and monta won’t have many games like that….we got to one pt and didn’t ever take lead in 2nd half

…they want as easy road as possible for a Brady-Rodgers SB….
******************************
Well of course, MLB wants Yankee’s-Phillies every year, NBA would love Heat-Lakers, NFL Packers-Patriots.
But THE ABSOLUTE last thing they want is a playoff game between Houston and Tennesse or Cincy in the first round.
That is the absolute worst case scenario for the league and the networks.
December 26th, 2011 at 5:56 pm
Raiders destined to be in postseason….just are….I feel it….I expect Carson to be sharp…he can win me over this week…as he should on mistic as well…we gotta do this
December 26th, 2011 at 5:57 pm
Raiders may be controversial, and the league may still hate Al, but the Raiders move the meter.
Hue is EXTREMELY media friendly, CP is at least on most people’s radars, and they have a good fan base. Raiders TV ratings are always above-average.
Hell, die-hard football fans might not even know who the coach of the Titans is.

People watch, but in the first round, every network get’s one game (ESPN, CBS, FOX, NBC).
I can just see the suits in CBS jumping out of a building when they get Houston-Titans, while everyone else gets either Drew Brees, Pittsburgh/Ravens, Tebow and the Lions story to promote.
December 26th, 2011 at 6:04 pm
One thing is for sure, is that the league wants Tebow in the playoffs.
And the reason is because Tebow draws fans. You either love him or love to hate him.
His game against the Jets, was the highest rated Thursday night game ever for NFLN. The Pats game was the most viewed regular season game in 4 years.
Chiefs are on the road (road teams don’t get calls anyways) and facing that.
Good luck with that.
Go Ravens!!
December 26th, 2011 at 6:10 pm
What has happened to this team since the year started, no camp, POS pre, Losing AD, Losing JC, Losing our D at key moments, and so many key players going down in mid season and not returning, and a chance to go to the play-offs seems like a Tebow moment at this time. This team has scrapped, and done it’s best, and although I’ve been pizzed at many and Hue, I give us credit, it’s in our hands. I wouldn’t want it any other way! RAIDER NATION RULES!

Yes, it would be nice to win the division and finish with a winning record. Do any of you die hards really believe we are an elite team? Did we measure up against Green Bay? Did we dominate any game this season?
In reality we are a .500 team that needs to take the next step. Hopefully we hire a GM that knows what he is doing and will do what is necessary to take us to the next level.

Two cents ..when the Raiders are an elite team we’ll all know it… IMO .. No… But they could become one.. And I think when they’re doing elite things then they will be Elite … Gotta do it first..
December 26th, 2011 at 7:16 pm
Aginst the Chefs… I think they played well enough to get a Lucky win……lots of dead spots in that game… Then they’d make a play… Then shoot themselves in the foot….lucky that they won the overtime toss ….. And not many teams are able to block to Fieldgoal attempts and win… So they played just well enough to be lucky

The way the Raiders have been losing home games this season. ..I’m not sure if we were better off plating this game in San Diego. .. its pretty pathetic when a team has a losing record at Home. .. there was a time in my life when I knew That we had the game sealed if we played at home in front of the greatest fans in football. .sadly those days are gone!!

I want a coach that goes ballistic when players get 15 yards after a TD.
————————————
I agree. And I think Hue will be that kind of coach and when he does, he won’t let any of this bs happen cause they’ll fear him. And after a game like the one in OT, he’ll fist pump cause now he’s been there before.
It’s all a learning curve for Hue and I think he’s done fine. Tho he has to answer for incompetent defense cordinators, he’ll figure out how to go ballastic on them too.

Watching the Dubs game here shortly? If we lose, that will pretty much be a wrap I’m afraid.
Losing your first two at home in a 66 game season is like starting 0-4.

Palmer has got to hit those.

Palmer has been a borderline disappointment with his I can do anything mentality.
Will give him the benefit of a doubt until he gets a full offseason, but if he is doing that crap in October next year, I am going to be irrate.
December 26th, 2011 at 8:14 pm
I recall those cut it loose vs game manager conversations we used to have, JFB.
You said you were comfortable with the picks you knew would come with a QB who throws to the WRs instead of the check down method of going about it.
December 26th, 2011 at 8:16 pm
Beech I have been loving the new material however I cannot fathom what on earth possessed you to eat a subway meatball sandwich.
You have to find a nice italian deli that makes their own meatballs.
I am getting quesy just thinking about sub meatball, what they heck are they made of anyway? Its sure not meat.

December 26th, 2011 at 8:17 pm
How nice we’re Palmer’s throws to Moore and DHB against KC. Those were almost laughably good. Moore was held against Det, which threw off the timing on that one. The one to Chaz was maybe a half-step overthrown but could’ve been bailed out with a nice catch. Moore’s catch against SD was much more difficult.
December 26th, 2011 at 8:19 pm
Very true J, very true.
But 4 picks with no TD’s in one game, and two horrific INT’s in the first half in another was not what I had in mind.
I will take 24 TD’s and 18 INT’s over 13 and 8 everyday, but that isn’t what is happening right now.
December 26th, 2011 at 8:22 pm
If the Raiders do make playoffs, there could be a feel-good story kinda like Kurt Warner (Rams) from shopping mall to SB MVP, with Carson Palmer.
December 26th, 2011 at 8:27 pm
Is Palmer throwing a lot of picks? Sure. But I’ll take his style over a game manager style like Alex Smith or Tebow any day. Did you know that Palmer has the same average yards per attempt as Drew Bree’s this season? That’s pretty damn impressive no matter what, but especially for a dude that came on at the trading deadline and is probably still learning the playbook.

Having seen both Glo and Palmer, I’d take somewhere in the middle.
If Glo was able to hit those deep passes AT ALL, I would have been fine with him being the QB. He was MUCH better this year than last year, and I suspect his timing with the WRs would have gotten better.
Hindsight being 20/20, I would have preferred to keep Glo and the picks.
December 26th, 2011 at 8:34 pm
jfb the jets would have the better overall record. 9-7 to 8-8. jhill there is no doubt those throws are on palmer. the trade was made for him to make those throws to put a game away. if he does then we control our own destiny now. then again if the defense does its job we would control it as well. i thought that the pats would put the broncos on a downward spiral. denvers d is overrated. teams that could score scored on them. they benefited from some fluky bullsh!t and bad defense by us and the vikes. buffalo basically did what they did early in the season. kc will beat the donks cuz the chefs arent bad. score early and often and watch tebow struggle. they were forced out of their comfort zone for 2 weeks. bowe gets off on them this weekend. book it
December 26th, 2011 at 8:37 pm
Palmer also figures out the defenses and switches up the play something i didnt see much of coming from jc although jc was good. The no huddles for SD game could get palmer going and hope the palmer-moore connections is in full effect like it waa the first time we played them
December 26th, 2011 at 8:38 pm
Armond,
I told JFB weeks ago that Tebow would fold up like a lawn chair and we would win the division.
Still not worried.
December 26th, 2011 at 8:43 pm
One thing about Palmer that is also superior to Campbell is he will elevate the play of our WRs, especially guys like DHB and Moore, not just with ability to pass and give them stats, but giving leadership and knowledge to them.

December 26th, 2011 at 9:21 pm
‘Sup fellas.
The Broncos’ wild magic ride is starting to crash and burn. Not just Tebow, but their much vaunted “great” defense as well.
During their six game winning streak their defense was playing well. well enough to keep games close, and give Tebow a chance to work his late game heroics.
If a game was in reach at the end, Denver believed Timmy was going to pull it out for them. The opposition was buying into the hype as well. Their collars got a lil tight and they seemed to choke. It was bizarre. Week after week. Was it divine intervention?
Now the luster is starting to fade. The Denver defense while they WERE playing well, was also very fortunate. It was also a freakish run of good luck that benefitted the Donks.
Injuries are part of the game, and every team has to deal with them, but former Raider FB Jon Ritchie pointed out on ESPN radio, just how lucky Denver was during their miraculous six game streak.
They played Oakland the game after McFadden went down, with Carson Palmer just off the couch. They caught KC the week after Cassell got hurt. Minnesota the week after AP went down. Chicago the week after Forte went down, and without Cutler as well, and seemingly on and on.
Now they have come back to earth, and been routed two weeks in a row. No Tebow Time, No 4th quarter magic.
In comes KC with a tough defense, playing hard for their new coach with former QB Orton looking for revenge and a chance to knock his former team out of the playoffs. A scriptwriter couldn’t have plotted a better storyline for week 17.
Raiders just have to take care of their own business, and continue their own lil winning streak against SD.
To quote Bart Scott: “Can’t wait”!

Reading all the posts from earlier and most on here wondering if certain teams will play all out this weekend.
Tenn @ Hou: Houston will play hard to try to get the #2 seed in case Cincy beat Baltimore. They would love to have a week off.
Baltimore @ Cincy: They need the win to win their Division and get that #2 seed and week off also. They slip up they know they have to hit the road in 1st rnd @ Den or @ Raiders because Pitt has a gimmie vs Cleveland.
KC @ Den: Romeo and K.O. Nuff said on that one.
Which leaves us: We come out like gangbusters on SD in the first quarter and it’s over. We don’t, we probably don’t want it bad enough. I have a feeling we Want It Bad.

jhill u know vegas bruh. he will bail on tebow anytime now only to act like he never liked the guy. jfb is the ultimate salesman. buy low sell high
December 26th, 2011 at 9:59 pm
504,
I really hope Baltimore crushes the Bungles this week. They should. Like you said the Ravens still have a lot to play for.
It would make me sick to see Oakland beat SD, only to have Denver beat KC, and then somehow have Cincy upset the Ravens to take that 2nd wildcard spot. Leaving Oakland High and Dry.
Cincy has a good young defense and AJ Green is a Man. Andy Dalton is an impressive young QB, playing very well for a rook.
However, they don’t deserve to go to the playoffs THIS year. Their time will come.
They have not beaten ONE team with a winning record all year. Not a single quality win. They have feasted on playing the NFC West and the AFC South in a year where Peyton was out and CJ2K was MIA most of the year.
That’s not the Bengals fault, all they can do is play the teams on their schedule, but if they edge the Raiders for that final WC spot, that would be criminal, IMO.

I’m not a big CP fan. I don’t think he’s ‘elite’. I wish we still had those picks…
But this team had to move on from JC.
I’ll say it again…JC is a good teammate and a dedicated professional. He’s just not a very good QB.
Wouldn’t mind him on my squad. He’d be a fine backup. But a front line QB that’s going to carry the team ? No way. He’s just not that guy and never will be.
CP probably isn’t either, so I understand the logic about keeping the picks – but this team had to move on from JC.

A comment about the inability to eliminate ’stupid’ penalties.
It starts with attitude and coaching.
I’m completely serious when I say this…
Any sort of foolish celebrating should not be tolerated. This applies to practice and pre-season, and runs through the entire year.
This means a complete elimination of stuff like DHB doing his dumb Merton Hanks head shaking after making a catch. Jarvis Moss dancing like a fool after a sack in the pre-season. Can’t even have the GB leap into the stands as we get penalized for over doing that. No punching the goal post.
Nothing more than a fist pump and toss the rock to the official.
Get off the field and celebrate all you want on the sideline.
Want to stop the nonsense Hue ?
That’s how you start.
These guys need to be made to understand they’re professionals and have to act like it.
Act like you’ve been there before.
Keep your head on straight.
Start thinking about the next play.
Don’t want to limit exuberance and enthusiasm, but Raids should institute a tough policy about being professionals and acting like it.
That’ll go a long way to eliminating these bonehead penalties.

As disappointing as it is to say…
They were plenty loud and rockin’ on the Hanie to Knox play on 3rd and 19 and of course that “debacle” drive against Detroit. Seems to have no bearing. You’d think it would though.
Regardless, you want every bit of help you can get.
I hope Hue and Bres. are in the film room as we speak working TOGETHER on the plan to stop Rivers if that kind of situation comes up again.
They need to handle that differently, cuz whatever they’re doing at the end of games on D ain’t working.

My bold prediction this week: kc will blow out the donks by more than 3 TD’s and here is why:
A. Kyle will be playing with a chip on his shoulder
B. Romeo will be coaching for his job
C. kyle knows the playbook and will tell Romeo exactly how to stop the running game
D. Brian Dawkins will be out leaving 2 rookie safeties out there
E. Von miller will have another no show performance
F. The pressure has gotten to tebow and he will cave and throw at least 3 picks this game
G. Mccluster will be a factor on special teams and on screens
H. Bowe will have a huge day will those rookie db’s trying to cover him
