Playoffs scenarios for Raiders

By Steve Corkran
Monday, December 26th, 2011 at 11:04 am in Oakland Raiders.

Here are the playoffs scenarios for the Raiders as they prepare for their regular-season finale against the San Diego Chargers.
In short, for the Raiders to win the AFC West, they need to win or tie the Chargers on Sunday AND have the Denver Broncos lose to the Kansas City Chiefs.
If that doesn’t happen, the Raiders still can earn the second wild-card berth.
For that to take place, the Raiders need to win, the Cincinnati Bengals have to lose to the Baltimore Ravens AND there can’t be a three-way tie between the Bengals, Raiders and Tennessee Titans. The Raiders win every other tiebreaker, even a four-way tie that includes the Bengals, Titans and New York Jets.

DENVER BRONCOS

Denver clinches AFC West Division:

1) DEN win

2) DEN tie + OAK loss or tie

3) OAK loss

OAKLAND RAIDERS

Oakland clinches AFC West Division:

1) OAK win + DEN loss or tie

2) OAK tie + DEN loss

Oakland clinches a wild card spot:

1) OAK win + CIN loss + TEN loss or tie

2) OAK win + CIN loss + NYJ win

CINCINNATI BENGALS

Cincinnati clinches a wild card spot:

1) CIN win or tie

2) NYJ loss or tie + OAK loss or tie

3) NYJ loss or tie + DEN loss or tie

NEW YORK JETS

NY Jets clinch a wild card spot:

1) NYJ win + CIN loss + TEN loss or tie + OAK loss or tie

2) NYJ win + CIN loss + TEN loss or tie + DEN loss or tie

TENNESSEE TITANS

Tennessee clinches a wild card spot:

1) TEN win + CIN loss + NYJ win + OAK loss or tie

2) TEN win + CIN loss + NYJ win + DEN loss or tie

3) TEN win + CIN loss + NYJ loss or tie + OAK win + DEN win

LMAO at people last night actually starting the conspiracy theories with how the NFL would screw the Raiders out if there were a 4 way tie.

Wouldn’t surprise me in the least!

  3. Just Fire Baby Says:

Trust me, the NFL would rather the Raiders in the playoffs than the Bengals or Titans.

    Not the Jets though.

  4. Kamikaze_Sensei Says:

Ugh, I just want to ignore the wild card and just have the Broncos lose. That’s so much easier to worry about.

  5. Just Fire Baby Says:

The NFLN, owned by the NFL, has run puff pieces this season on Sundays on Hue Jackson, and than Carson Palmer.

I most have missed the Mike Munchak/Matt Hassleback puff pieces.

  6. RaiderDebo Says:

If we beat the Chargers, consider our ticket to the playoffs punched. There’s no way Cincy beats the Ravens. Baltimore only stinks it up against bad teams. And Denver should lose to the Chiefs. The only concern we should have there is turnovers by Orton. If he keeps that in check, they should win going away.

  7. inonewordraider Says:

so the early game we’re rooting for the Jets and the Texans to still be in both the division and the wild card race. Either way we’ll be in by game time… GO RAIDERS!

  8. Just Fire Baby Says:

Orton sucks ,I have zero confidence in him doing anything other than his typical Kyle Orton thing.

NO big plays, at least one big turnover, lots of garbage stats, and zero inspiration.

  9. Seymour Bush Says:

Win the division. The shine has come of Dungver’s shoes. They are infinitely beatable.

  10. Just Fire Baby Says:

I think we have a GREAT chance at the Wildcard, and only a DECENT chance at the division.

The Donkeys just beat these guys in KC completing two freaking passes all game.

  11. inonewordraider Says:

If we beat the Chargers, consider our ticket to the playoffs punched.

Agreed, he sucks. But Tebow sucks worse. Crennel will play their run game better this time around and Orton has weapons. The team wants Crennel to stay on as head coach, so they’ll be motivated. It’s also fun to play spoiler.

I actually really like that the NFL put all the good rivalries at the end of the season. Jets/Dolphins is one of the great rivalries in sports. Those franchises really don’t like each other. The Ravens would love nothing more than to knock a division rival out of the playoffs. As for Cheat/Bunco, hehehehehe.

  18. boss01 Says:

SO to get this straight, I will be rooting for the Jets, Texans, Ravens & Chiefs this weekend.

Out of all those teams, it hurts rooting for the chiefs the most.

Second, I cannot stand the Jets with Sanchez and the fat bastard.

The Ravens & Texans I have no problem with.

  19. Seymour Bush Says:

It’s also fun to play spoiler.
    =================================

Spoiler teams have no pressure, the grip isn’t on, they can just go have fun, knowing they have a full month in Cabo waiting. Then there is the old betting adage, “teams that must win, usually don’t.”

  20. inonewordraider Says:

Rivers Jackson Gates Floyd Tolbert Matthews Phillips want nothing more than to play spoiler

  21. RaiderDebo Says:

If there’s one team that could pack it in, it’s the Chargers. HC about to be fired and a franchise QB to protect from injury. Wouldn’t mind a couple of late hits early to make them think about pulling him like Romo against the Eagles.

  22. DonManoukiansNeighbor Says:

  34. Just Fire Baby Says:

With all teams that are playing the spoiler role, you want to knock them out early and watch them check out.

You let them linger into the 2nd half, they realize it is their Super Bowl and give a 110%.

  35. M Lonetree Says:

an ugly win in KC on Sat?
the Packmen just had an ugly loss in Arrowhead the week prior.
perhaps Romeo has a plan to just make games as ugly as possible.
here’s hoping that the ugliness prevails over the Donks.

  36. beach Says:

Just get in the playoffs baby! Yes, we will know if the Jets win before our game, and if they do, we MUST win and have the Ravens or Chiefs win!

  37. al d. davis Says:

Quit “if’ing”. All the “if’s” loom formiably and prejudicially against the Raiders. I doubt Raiders can beat SD based on their perfomance against KC. In each successive game, of their last four games, the Raiders continue to regress. Also, to believe the Bronco will lose against KC on Sunday, is a total leap in logic, and ridiculous. Denver is the real thing and got beat badly by the Pats (a first tier team), and were beat even worse by the Bills (a second tier team.) To believe that Broncos will lose three straight, suffering a third successive loss to KC (a third tier team) is more than logic will bear.

The remaining contingencies regarding wildcard based on the Ravens performance etc. is total nonsense: way too speculative. And even if the Raiders do make it into the first round they will lose: THEY ARE TOTAL CRAP. It would have about as much significance as the Seahawks winning their division last season and actually winning the first round playoff game: no significance at all. Look at Seattle this season: total crap, all over again, ironically playing will Raider castoffs.

So, to next season. Attenuate the taint of Stank AL, who was stuck in a retro-universe dating in 1983 when we last won a Super Bowl. We are now eating his dementia imposed rotten fruit cultivated under his leadership of the team.

Mark and Trask need to attenuate this Stank, get rid of AL’s influence once and for all (he should have been run out of the league years ago), and blow up the entire team by hiring the best GM in the business, firing Hue, Chuckie, most of the sub-coaches and the bulk of the players on the roster. Only then will we make the playoffs and actually advance toward the Super Bowl.

  38. beach Says:

    33. I prefer the home playoff game. Houston has just as good a defense as Pittsburgh, and Big Ben is a statue. He cannot move due to injury.

  39. Forrest Hump Says:

We need to handle our business and beat SD. The Queefs will take care of the rest for us. So let it be written.

You really have to wonder how much they would help other than throwing off the rhythm of the offense. With a full week of practice, sure, but if they are not practicing til late in the week, they would most likely be a detriment.

    **********

Yes, Chuck B is in over his head, was only hired to be a defensive asst until we couldnt find an actual DC and Al gave him the DC job. He was in the UFL last year and has no business coaching in the NFL today. Next year when we have a real DC that the players respect things should be better.

I would love to win the division thus knocking Teblow and Donkeys out of the playoffs and playing the banged up Steelers at home. Ben is immobile now and won’t improve much by game time. They would have to travel and we get our home sell out crowd behind us. Beating the defending AFC champs then on to Super Bowl to play GB with a full team and see how well they stop the run with McFadden back. Reminds me of 83 Super Bowl year when we lost bad to Redskins then killed them in Super Bowl. I hate saying this but-go chefs.

  84. Dr. Hunter S. Thompson Says:

If McFadden doesn’t attempt to play this Sunday he is a Pu$$y. Even if it is just to use him as a decoy he needs to suit up. I also think we should bring back Tim Brown and Howie Long. You know Timmy can still run routes and Howie can still rush the “passa” in third downs packages.

    ALL HANDS ON DECK!

    Just Win Baby.

  85. armond Says:

denver loses their 3rd straight to the chefs and we will beat the chargless. just like theco7 says, FUKK RIVERS!!

Just hoping the Raiders can lock up a winning season to officially get this thing turned around.

I’m looking at the scenarios for getting into the dance and I don’t feel good about any of them.

Don’t see the Mules losing to the Chefs. Could happen, but I don’t like the chances of a road team with nothing to play against a motivated Denver squad in this one.

Wild card ? Despite Baltimore sputtering, they’ve got plenty to play for and should have enough to take down the Bungles in Cincy. Texans have no real motivation to take down the Titans, but still might do so just bcz it’s important for them to demonstrate an ability to score points before the playoffs begin.

Don’t see the Jets beating the Fins. Think they’re done after the loss to the Giants, and Miami is still playing hard.

Of course, this is the NFL and anything can happen, a lot of these games are toss ups.

That being said, even though I’m not optimistic about our chances – now that the various scenarios are known and understood – NOT A SECOND MORE SHOULD BE SPENT ON THE ‘WHAT IF’S’ – and every thought and effort should be focused directly on obliterating the Chargers.

None of this matters unless we close with a victory.

Time to concentrate on the task at hand.

Heard that Condo jersey was a major seller this Christmas.

Denver got smoked by the Bills. Denvers strong suit is supposed to be the run game, and Buffalo shut em down, as horrible as their run d is. KC has a very good run d, and they are not playing for “nothing”, they already stated they are playing to keep Crennels job. More importantly, Orton DEFINITELY isnt viewing this game as “nothing to play for”.

San Diego is already toast. This will finaly be the game where you get to somewhat see the potential of this Oakland Raiders team. This will be the Raiders most complete game of the season.

Texans really need to win to go into playoffs with some momentum after 2 straight losses. They will play hard. Kansas Shi..y will play hard for Orton and Crennell. Fat Rex will have his team ready since they still have a chance to get in the playoffs

CP is getting credit for the two long passes which resulted in the Moore TD and the DHB reception in OT.

Yes, they were good tosses. Nice, accurate, in-stride, easy to catch rainbows.

But how about the pass protection on those plays ?

    OUTSTANDING.

The play action on the DHB bomb left the Chefs flat footed. Absolutely no push from them. Palmer had all day to throw, a perfect pocket, and there wasn’t a defender remotely near him even after taking a good while to allow DHB to toast his man.

The protection on the Moore TD was almost as good.

Very impressive stuff and reminiscent of the Stabler days, when the play action devastated opposing defenses and the long gain made ‘em pay.

Al was smiling down on those two. Deep strike, RAIDER football.

    SMASH THE BOLTS.

Norvell already knows he is done, he will not be coaching for his job, if anything he is bitter that he didnt get the vote of confidence from the owner.

That will equate to a team that has checked out and shut it down.

I’m thinking the opposite will happen. I think SD will probably be in “hang it all out” mode, with nothing to lose, which can be extra dangerous; going for it on 4th down, long passes (which we are vulnerable to), bold defensive plays, etc. etc. etc.

They like Norv and want to send him out a winner.

PLUS…it’s the Raiders. They don’t wanna get swept again and to knock Oakland out of the playoffs is probably motivation enough in it’s own right.

If we play NOT to lose…that’s what will happen; we will lose.

    So lets go get ‘em.
