WR/KR Ford returns to practice
By Steve Corkran
Wednesday, December 28th, 2011 at 12:07 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Wide receiver/kick returner Jacoby Ford is practicing today after missing the past seven weeks with a foot sprain. Therefore, it’s logical to assume that he intends to play Sunday against the San Diego Chargers.
Ford is running routes, catching passes and doing everything else asked of the wide receivers. He last participated in a football-related activity Nov. 10, when he suffered his injury against the Chargers at the end of a long reception.
If the Raiders get back Ford, quarterback Carson Palmer will have at his disposal all six wide receivers for the first time since that Nov. 10 game.
It comes at an ideal time for the Raiders, given they are in a must-win situation. Fellow receiver Denarius Moore returned last week, and he caught four passes for 94 yards, including a 61-yard touchdown in the third quarter.
It remains uncertain whether Ford will be used on kick returns. Coach Hue Jackson might be averse to taxing Ford too much in his first game back. Ford missed the past six games.
Running back Darren McFadden, on the other hand, still isn’t healthy enough to practice, even though he suffered his midfoot sprain 66 days ago, against the Kansas City Chiefs on Oct. 23.
Jackson said he doesn’t prefer to play anyone in a game if he hasn’t practiced in the lead up to the game. That gives McFadden two more opportunities to get back on the field and show that he is ready to contribute.
At this point, that appears a long-shot.
Free safety Michael Huff is practicing today, as well. He has missed the past two games. However, he said Monday that he will play regardless how sore or banged up he is because of the ramifications of the game.
The Raiders need to win Sunday just to have a shot at making the playoffs. Even then, they would need the Denver Broncos to lose or tie against the Chiefs, or the Bengals to lose to the Baltimore Ravens and have anything happen other than a three-way tie that involves the Raiders, Bengals and Tennessee Titans.
Defensive tackles Richard Seymour and John Henderson are not at practice. Henderson is nursing a sore knee. No word on what ails Seymour, who has been a regular at practice the past several weeks.
Seymour was named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week for his two blocked field-goal attempts against the Chiefs in a 16-13 overtime victory Sunday.

Palmer needs to quit that and start throwing some accurate passes. who knows, they might not get picked ??
It’s nice to have a strong armed QB, but not if he’s gonna play like Favre in his 40’s – or Jeff George or JaMarcus!
I’d rather have an accurate dude with smarts and a noodle arm like Gannon or Pennington and some guy playing careless heave-ho football like one of us fans would.
Carson Palmer is my guy, but he needs to start thinking MORE and just tossing it up for grabs LESS.

I agree. But i’d like to see the stats on balls thrown to Moore/Ford.
I doubt that many of his picks were on balls intended for them.

It’s win or go home. Are we gonna get the Carson Palmer that played against San Diego, Minnesota, Chicago & Detroit or the Carson Palmer that played against Denver, Miami, Green Bay & Kansas City ???

It takes Jano 12 years to make the pro bowl and Steve takes hours to write a post recognizing the accomplishment.
Jacoby Ford misses a few games and within 12 minutes of his return to practice we have a post about it.
The Raiders should invite Corkran to Special Teams practice so Jano can kick a ball in the back of Cork’s head.

Without DMC (and some hurt WR’s) RR, Palmer is pressing. Its not what he was brought here to do. We need an upgraded game manager who can throw deep. Hopefully things will open up for Bush with Ford and DWow back out there…

Elk,
Palmer has always been a gun slinger. Never really been a “game manager” type QB. He was brought here to win games for us, not avoid turnovers and hand the ball off 35 times per week. If the Raiders wanted that, they could have signed a guy off the street like we did at CB with Lito Sheppard!
Did you want Kellen Clemens or Jeff Garcia? me neither.

Actually Pat Williams was in the NFL as of last year. So your statement is a bit exagerated, but I get your point.
And its debatable that Big John has as much left in his tank as semi-retired Williams.
December 28th, 2011 at 12:27 pm
We will see. I dont think it is in our best interest to throw the ball 40+ times a week when we never look to our tightends or rarely do a checkdown…
December 28th, 2011 at 12:28 pm
Pat Williams would have a 2 game suspension to be served if he were to attempt coming out of retirement
December 28th, 2011 at 12:28 pm
So if they say is true that they may IR Big John…do we elevate Ivey or find someone for one game, possibly 5?
December 28th, 2011 at 12:29 pm
Palmer has had no running game the last 4 games. Raiders have been forced to pass, pass, and pass some more. Not too many qbs succeed when that’s the case.
Palmer looked all-pro when bush was putting up 100-yard games. They work together.

All you Palmer bashers need to remember that he is the type of quarterback that Al Davis (and Hue Jackson by default) covets. Palmer has a strong arm and all the pedigree (1st round draft pick) that makes him attractive to the Raiders. If he can somehow eliminate the picks, and he knows this as well, he will be great because the Raiders will supply him with speedy receivers (Moore, Ford, DHB, Murphy, etc.), injuries notwithstanding. The one thing we have to remember is Palmer had zero training camp and came off the couch and he still has us in position to make a playoff appearance. I wonder though what the season would have been like if Campbell hadn’t gone down. Anyone want to speculate what our record would be with JC still under center? I think we would have won 10 or 11 games with JC healthy.
December 28th, 2011 at 12:49 pm
Agreed! This game will show what we have not only if we make the playoffs, but for the upcoming 2012 season!
December 28th, 2011 at 12:50 pm
Not sure how many games but i will say this…if JC had not go down, we will be 5-0 in the division and probably already have clinched!

I think you should go to a sports bar, a non Raider bar, and just listen in on a conversation. Better yet, try bringing up the Raiders. Don’t wear any Raider gear. Pretend you’re just a fan of any old team, and bring up the Raiders. Watch the response you get. It would be as if you brought up Justin Bieber. Nobody would even want to talk about it. They’d just laugh. It’s not that people don’t like the Raiders. They’re just tired of the Raiders. Just like they’re tired of the gangsta thug image, that whole thing. There’s no compassion in this country anymore for the impoverished. That’s a permanent casualty of the Bush era.

I think the key to this game is to come out and be very physical from the start. We need to deflate SD and let them know that if they want to compete in this one they need to get bloody and brutal. I don’t think that’s the type of game that team would be interested in at this point in time.
The other trick is to do that without being cheap or chippy about it. Last thing you want to do in this one is wake up the Chargers. Want to put them through the grinder without motivating them to play.

– Bush and the OL has owned the powdre blues the last three games. Beat down #4 on Sunday.
– We need to make PRivers uncomfortable and force him to throw quickly, otherwise our secondary is in trouble.
– A read a good article on how Belicheck tried to keep Tebow in check. No matter what, even when he pitched the ball, Belicheck assigned a defender to hit Tebow…every damn time. Are you listening Romeo? Punish the man.
– Blow ‘em out, or win it in the end, but just win this game Hue.

Raiders DEFENSE needs to get pressure on Rivers and get his timing off.
Pressure him up the middle and in front of him and try to get to the backside as well.
If you flush him left….have the RDE come sack his gimpy azz and force a fumble.
The Oline and DLines need to stay low and play wit leverage, if they can’t get to Rivers, get your hands up and knock some balls down!
Raiders defense needs to make plays and watch out for the screens to Matthews and Tolbert.
Carson needs to use more pump fakes and look off his primary receiver more. Huey and Saunders need to do plenty of play action, roll carson out and throw screens!
December 28th, 2011 at 2:23 pm
Get Ford, DHB and Moore and Bush and Jones and Boss involved!

Thinking about JC, on the live chat yesterday Cork said that Hue “mishandled” the Campbell situation. How so? What else could Hue have done differently with a player who was at the end of his contract but injured and unable to help the team?
Probably referring to Campbell finding out thirdhand, calling it the greatast trade in NFL history, Saunders “real NFL quarterback” comment, etc. I imagine he wasn’t referring to the trade itself.

They havent played a great offense this year.
The closest one was the Giants and if it wasnt for a Manningham drop they lose that game.
Defense doesnt win championships anymore bro.

like it or not, one of those teams will win on Sunday. add the Broncos to that list
You can’t just sit around and hope that all 4 teams with playoff hopes will lay an egg when they have a shot to enter the dance in January
Raiders win WK17?
9-7 record with a tougher schedule, all the injuries and Al’s death is considered an excellent season compared to the previous 8 … regardless of what other teams do this weekend
********************************************************
Was thinking the same thing. Before the season started a lot of us were talking about the schedule, and how difficult it would be to even match the 8-8 of the year before.
Win on Sunday and get to 9-7, what with all the craziness, would be quite an accomplishment. Playoffs would make it that much better.
December 28th, 2011 at 2:39 pm
I agree DeuceDeuce – I hope the 49ers are one and done in the playoffs.
My point was that the rule changes don’t seem to be affecting that defense – You don’t see them racking up penalties and suspensions, yet they are winning games with a one-dimensional offense. I hate the whiners, but I gotta’ give credit where credit is due – that defense is playing well and discrediting those who claim that the rules don’t allow defenses to play anymore.

No doubt their D is balling out right now. Just dont think they are good enough to be a top team.

It’s a great week to be a Raiders fan! Isn’t it?!
Getting to 9-7 would be quite an accomplishment…if we were talking at the beginning of the season — especially if it included a Playoff berth.
BUT…
Getting to 9-7 — and not making the Playoffs, after being in such a potentially commanding position 6-weeks ago would be a failure. Not a small failure, a significant one.
HueJax and Co. have done a fine job this year…but they (and the Players) have failed time and again to tie-up the division. Now, we must win and hope others give us another chance to “determine our own football destiny.” It should’ve been determined favorably a month ago.
If the Raiders make the Playoffs, it will have been an excellent year…with a chance to make it a great one.
Just Win, Baby. And get a little (lot) of help along the way.
December 28th, 2011 at 2:58 pm
And Dell, I know what you mean bro! I’m scarificing NYE this year so I can get up early and celebrate with the Nation on NY Day…if we were out of playoff contention, I’ll probably be rolling in around 9 or so…lol

Blackstock shows just how little depth we have on this football team. That guy couldn’t even sniff an NFL roster before Chuck B gave him a shot at redemption. not as a backup LB. not as a special teamer.
Comparing him to a Top 10 MLB is just wrong!
Goethel was a 5th or 6th rounder & Brown went undrafted. Those guys couldn’t beat a 30th ranked Run Defense? Even if they just matched it, we could save some coin!
Hue Jackson should look to trade McBust as soon as March
December 28th, 2011 at 3:03 pm
How can we trade from a position of weakness?
How can we justify to another team that McClain has any value if his position is one we are very weak at and were still trying to move him??..

Nobody trades for McClain until he’s either panned-out as a real MLB, or his rookie contract is $ub$tantially depleted.
Fact is…McClain’s a Raiders project, and will stay one for another year or two.
Here’s hoping we find another young LB or two next Spring…a LB with explosiveness and speed. Raiders’ Speed with attitude, and a knack for hitting the ball-carrier. If McClain could locate and hit the ball-carrier maybe two more times per game, the Raiders would’ve outscored their opponents by 10+ points per (and kept the leads).
McClain’s off-field behavior alone is enough to put us on the market for another young MLB prospect. Who knows what kind of fire that will light under McClain, if any.

Simple. Al Davis wasn’t the only owner or GM that liked giving second chances. He was, however, the only top dog that would pay top dollar to a guy who struggled to meet expectations elsewhere or live up to that draft status. McClain’s contract might make him untradeable. If that’s the case, fine. I wouldn’t do what Seattle did to Aaron Curry. We can find somebody better in free agency imo. Somebody who isn’t guaranteed $23 mil

FINALLY this is the week that Hue JackCity breaks out his super-secret-atomic bomb-special teams-trick play!! He calls it “FatBoy”.
I think it goes something like….
The Raiders line up to attempt a 74 yard FG with 2:23 left in the 1st quarter. The ball is direct snapped to Branch who breaks left and shuffle passes to a breaking Myers who reverses to a cutting Jones who flips it back to a giggling Lechler who chucks it 50 yards to a puking Janikowski down the right sideline who rolls in the endzone for a TD!!
Raiders win by 30.

Deuce,
Losing to get a better seed, not in my eyes.
I just can’t worry about Pitt or Balt, they can be beat. We beat Pitt two years ago in their place, not a worry to me. I also think we match up well with them.
Baltimore has inconsistent Qb, and their def is good, not great and the QB play is so important in the playoffs and they have never advanced with Flacco behind center.
A few year back a Qb with Jacksonville named Mark Brunell beat Elway of the Broncos who were favored by 18 points. Denver lost, anything can happen in the playoffs, and the role of the spoiler suits me fine as we roll in an out of these teams who have home field advantage, as we play better on the road.
