Seymour, Palmer taking lead on heels of must-win game
By Steve Corkran
Thursday, December 29th, 2011 at 3:07 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Raiders defensive tackle Richard Seymour is no stranger to big games. He played in four Super Bowls with the New England Patriots, after all.
Therefore, the numerous players on the Raiders who haven’t played in a so-called big game would do wise to listen to Seymour when it comes to knowing what to expect and how to act Sunday against the Chargers.
He said he doesn’t shy away from making a big deal of the upcoming game, even at the risk of a player placing more pressure upon himself to perform.
“You have to, obviously, it is a big game,” Seymour said. “So, you can’t deny that fact but, as a competitor, as a player, you have to embrace these moments because they don’t come around often. And that’s something that I’ve always done throughout my career. You want to play your best football in the biggest games. And, as a competitor, you have to want that. But you have to enjoy it. It’s a fun time.”
Quarterback Carson Palmer said he cautions players to treat such games the same way they did the Thursday night game against the Chargers on Nov. 10, when the Raiders played before a national audience, in prime time.
“I don’t think you make too big of a deal of it,” Palmer said. “It’s another game. All games are important, all games we need to win. Especially with young guys who don’t have a lot of experience, you don’t want to freak anyone out or make people think you need to play differently or make a spectacular play or do anything out of the ordinary.
“You just need to do your job and go through your footwork, where your eyes should be, where your hands should be and all those little things and not put too much emphasis on, ‘We have to win, , we have to win, we have to win.’ Guys just need to go out and play and do their jobs.”
EIGHT IS ENOUGH
Sunday’s game is sold out, meaning it will be televised locally and the Raiders sold out all eight of their regular-season home games.
The Raiders failed to sell out more than six games in any of the previous 16 seasons since their relocation to Oakland. Jackson said he expects the fans to be off the hook Sunday.
“If I know our fans and the way they’ve been for us all year, it’s going to be unbelievable,” Jackson said. “They’ll be on the edge of their seats. They’ll bring the noise and the passion, and they’ll give us extra energy. We need them, and I expect them to be as loud as they’ve ever been, and we need a true 12th man this week.”
Jackson feels as if the only way he and his players can repay the fans for their loyalty, passion and commitment is to win more games at home, in addition to making the playoffs.
The Raiders are 5-3 on the road this season but only 3-4 at the Coliseum.
“We’re making progress, and I’m happy and my hat goes out to our fans for supporting us,” Jackson said. “What we have to do is give back to them, like I’ve always said, and how we give back is by winning. For some reason, we’re much different than what we were a year ago. We were winning in our division at home and on the road. This year has been on the road and not at home. We’ve got to get that trend changed. We need to win at home.”
CHARGERS GOING TO MAIL IT IN?
Jackson made a point Wednesday of saying there’s no way the Chargers are going to go through the motions Sunday, that the Chargers are going to be motivated to beat the Raiders.
Earlier this month, Jackson said teams such as the Chargers in a situation where they are out of playoff contention tend to shut it down if the opponent can succeed in the run.
The thinking goes, it’s easier to break a team’s spirit if you keep pounding away and make it a more physical game than usual.
Here’s Jackson’s take Dec. 9, two days before the Raiders played the Green Bay Packers.
“Toward the end of the year, people really start to run it (more),” Jackson said. “People kind of know where they stand, probably, with the chances of playoffs and everything else. The games we play, they’re going to be very competitive games down the stretch here.
“Every game counts for us, but the teams that know they don’t have a chance, normally teams that play those teams run the ball against them because eventually those guys say, ‘OK, I’ve had enough.’ They make a business decision to take the game off. That’s my opinion. That’s what I’ve seen over the years.”
In other words, look for the Raiders to go with a heavy dose of Michael Bush and Taiwan Jones and see if they can’t get the Chargers to roll over.
STAT OF THE YEAR
Raiders cornerback Stanford Routt has committed 16 penalties in 15 games this season. To put that into perspective, that’s one more than the entire Green Bay Packers defense.
Tough to comprehend, at the least.
FORD PRIMED TO ROLL
Wide receiver Jacoby Ford rebounded from Wednesday’s practice without any setbacks or lingering effects from his first action in seven weeks.
That gives Jackson even more confidence that Ford will be full go Sunday against the Chargers after missing the past six games.
“I was really happy with the way he practiced today,” Jackson said. “He’s getting better, and it’s good to have him back out there. It’s a testament to our medical staff. They have done a great job. Like I told (everyone), I’ve kind of stayed away from it and when guys are ready to play, when they put them back out there, they’ve been ready.”
Jackson isn’t quite as confident in regard to running back Taiwan Jones, who just returned from a hamstring injury.
Jones is making steady progress, yet he still hasn’t shown Jackson what Jackson wants to see before he can count upon Jones in a game.
“He’s getting better,” Jackson said, “but, again, I still haven’t seen him just turn it loose yet, and that’s kind of what you need to see. He’s real close. I asked him today, ‘How are you feeling?’ He said, ‘Coach, much better. I’m practically there.’
“But, still, to say he’s exactly where he needs to be to play at high level, I’m gonna see it, and that’s just where I am. I need to see it in order for a guy to do it, because if the guy shows you in practice, he’s going to do it in a game.”
HUFF A KEY COMPONENT
The Raiders get back starting free safety Michael Huff on Sunday after playing the past two games without one of their most consistent players.
Jackson and defensive coordinator Chuck Bresnahan said Huff’s presence makes a huge difference in the overall performance of the Raiders defense.
“He gives you another outstanding competitor and another outstanding football player,” Bresnahan said. “We’ll see where he’s at and judge it as the week goes on.”
Bresnahan added that Huff has been champing at the bit to get back in the fold. Huff has missed four games this season after not missing any his first five NFL seasons.
“This is a guy that has been sitting back and pulling his hair out,” Bresnahan said. “He is a competitor and wants to be out on the field. Anything that Michael can give us is going to be a huge plus, and we’re excited to have him back on the football field.”
JANIKOWSKI SPEAKS
Kicker Sebastian Janikowski is headed to the Pro Bowl for the first time in his 12 NFL seasons. The man of few words broke from the norm and shared some of his thoughts with the media Thursday.
“It’s very sweet,” Janikowski said. “I’m excited about it. If you asked me that question 10 years ago, I would say I’d be there five times already. I’m excited. I can’t wait.”
Making it even sweeter for Janikowski is the fact that he will be joined by punter Shane Lechler, a veteran of six Pro Bowls — he was selected for the seventh time Tuesday.
“It’s awesome,” Janikowski said. “I’ve been waiting for 12 years. Especially (nice) that Shane will be there. He’ll show me the ropes, I guess.”
Lechler said he intends to set up a round of golf or two so that he and Janikowski can take down the 49ers kicking tandem of Andy Lee and David Akers.

Ask which NFL WRs love playing against Routt. They dont. Hes a bully at the line in man to man, and hard to separate from.

Thats an interesting theory. I wonder if there is a way to find out how many penalties Charles Woodson had when he was a Raider as opposed to how many he’s had since he’s been a Packer. Obviously Routt is not CWOOD but it would be interesting nonetheless.

Yup I am following the trend, I think Palmer will complete some big gains over the top to moore and ford and DHB. might be a 400 game.

No, they get the benefit of the doubt on all questionable calls. They get a blind eye on borderline calls. They DON’T jump offsides or do dumb schit like our guys do, and they play disciplined football. If you lined those some packers up and put em in Raider uni’s without telling the zebras would end up with easily 3 times as many penalties.
December 29th, 2011 at 3:38 pm
Lt. Dan – I think you’ll have to wait until next year to see just how good this team truely can be. Training camp and a new DC will do wonders for us. Pretty scary when you think about how good we will be. That being said, I still think we make the playoffs this year and we have a good chance to go deep if we do…
December 29th, 2011 at 3:40 pm
I will never question Dmacs heart. I’m sure he would play if it were up to him. It’s not though.

Eliminate the personal fouls, offsides and nuetral zone infractions. Holding and PI’s are part of the game.
December 29th, 2011 at 3:42 pm
If Stanford Routt played for another team he would have about 3 or 4 penalties. I hate saying this but the referees call Raiders games much closer than other games in the NFL. Sometimes I see a Patriot, Packer or Ravens defensive backs casually holding on some plays and the refs would let that go but with the Raiders they don’t let casual holding go.
December 29th, 2011 at 3:42 pm
The way the DMAC injury has been handled is a complete cluster f@ck.
You’re telling me that with all the medical access a professional franchise has at its disposal that no one could tell management that the dude would be out the rest of the year?
He could have been on IR and his roster spot used to help this team.
I doubt he plays again this season and his injury was totally mishandled by Hue Jackson.

You really think some borderline roster guy, special teamer is worth adding at the expense of writing McFadden off for the year.
I think if you even thought your only chance of getting McFadden back was if you made it to the Super Bowl it’d still be worth holding that spot. He’s your best player period. Your most explosive offensive weapon. The league’s leading rusher before he got hurt.
No sense is jumping the gun and dumping DMC on the IR unless you were 100% sure he could not play another game this season. I don’t think that’s been the case.

KC’s defense will shut down Denver’s offense. The question will be if KC can muster enough offense to win that game. Outside of Dwayne Bowe, there’s not really a playmaker on either side.
Unless Orton can connect with Bowe on some big throws, game may be won by whatever defense scores or gives its offense a short field more often.

Business will get handled on sunday.

December 29th, 2011 at 4:07 pm

My point was the donks should have kept orton in Denver to prevent kc from getting him and ruining their playoff hopes, they released him because they wanted to save a couple mil which does nothing for them. Had they kept him, Tyler palco would be starting right now against the donks, orton would be watching from the bench and if tebow goes down with an injury he could have stepped in and helped.

Stan Routt is playing in the wrong era. If Routt was around during the 70’s, he’d be another Mel Blount. Routt will absolutely maul opposing rcvrs at the LOS. He’s got off the chart strength in his hands and jamming ability for a corner.
Stan got flagged for an illegal hands to the face penalty in Houston – when in fact he just applied a 2 handed chuck to the opponent’s chest that almost knocked him on his a$$. Might have been the best chuck I’ve ever seen.
Routt would have been a terror in the days when ‘bump and run’ was always legal til the ball was airborne.
That being said, this is 2011 and Routt has to cool it with the illegal contact. He’s still a top tier CB even if his physicality is limited in today’s game.
Don’t know whether it’s stupidity, stubborness or just bad coaching – but Routt’s got to make an adjustment if he wants to be an All-Pro.

I think Wiz will move to C in 2012 and we will have a new DC.
Just hope Chuckles doesn’t play his “not prevent” BS at critical moments with 3rd string personnel in the secondary like he always does.
Rivers will drive and destroy us if its close again and we’ll stick Chucks head on a pike.

Whther he admits it or not (he doesn’t, blames players for not exectuting) CHuck has cost us points and games with his epic D collapses this season from his “non prevent” prevent D calls.

Hey guys and gals,
Tthose of you hittin on the scenario, that we win so does Denver , but we also get in as a wildcard and face Texans, due to their less of a tough team due to their QB situation, go see a mind specialists.
I want us to win the WEST!!!! so we can HOST A PLAYOFF GAME, get it.
I’ve been going through all these tough times like many others, and want a playoff game in Oaktown, story ends.
The game will sell out, so all of you can see the game, plus I don’t want to travel to Texas to see the Raiders play.
Let’s just win the west and bring on PITT or whomever, I like our chances against anyone in the AFC.
Thanks, Raider Nation Member is out!!!

THINGS:
To those that are questioning Hue’s handling of DMACS injury go to post #29 by Chris in NY, couldn’t have said it better myself.
First congradulations to Jano, way to go dude you and Lech are the best kicking tandem in the league and true weapons on this team.
Got to say T Branch has improved by leaps and bounds this year which means the young man has really worked on his coverage skills. Even more impressive he’s listed as a pro bowl alternate(I think he deserves it more then Seymore)which is well deserved.
Sure wish Taiwan Jones could kick this hamstring injury, he’s got what I call “oh hsit speed” meaning defenders say “oh hsit” when he has the ball, this kid has rare after burner speed and would definetly be an asset come sunday/playoff time. In addition to giving Bush some much needed rest.

I’m gonna start drinking as soon as NFL countdown starts, I tend to break less things over the course of the game when I’m drunk, I still yell as much, but I got a feeling as soon as the whistle blows the refs are gonna want to make me break my tv, laptop, beer mug and everything else within reach.
The refs will also try to bail teblow out any which way they can. By the time game time arrives I will be a fall down drunk like jano. The suspense will not get to me as much, and I will be numb in case the defense folds again.
I will probably be at b 2 dubs or tilted kilt, that way the skirts will ease my pain in case the raiders are losing.

No one questions Dmacs heart. I’m sure he has one. All humans do. It’s his body that Raider fans are worried about. He is injury prone, he has been since he’s came into the league. Sh!t, I think Schilens has played more games than Dmac this year and that says alot.
Some athletes can have all the talent in the world but not the body to sustain the rigors of NFL play. It’s just how it is. He could very well turn into a liability if he gets hurt AGAIN next year.
Maybe he needs some Dr. Scholls gel inserts.

Guess I’ll be rooting for a Jet win against Miami.
That would mean that the Raids can still get in even if the Titans beat the Texans.
Seems ridiculous to be rooting for the Jets, since with a victory they would wind up with the same record as the Raids, but that’s the way it plays out.
Nightmare scenario is Raids being eliminated in a 3 way tie with the Titans and Bengals – when a 4 way tie with the Titans, Bengals and Jets gets them in.
December 29th, 2011 at 7:13 pm
Davis worshipers who want to get rid of Hue should be careful what they wish for. As much as Hue’s philosophy might differ fro Al’s, Hue was hired by Al Davis, and he’ll be the last head coach hired by Al Davis. He’s the last direct link to Al as far as head coaches are concerned. When Hue’s gone, a new GM will probably make the HC choice, and the Davis legacy will for all intents and purposes be over in Oakland. We’ll have our first head coach since either John Rauch or Red Conkright to not to be hired by Al Davis. Hue Jackson is all that keeps Al’s legacy alive.

McFadden is by far our best player.
——————————————————
It’s about the name on the front of the jersey!
If Jones balls throughout this playoff run, no denying that a Bush/Jones combo can be effective with the WRs and QB we have.
Have to give up something to get something and we need draft picks. Don’t have the Marc Davis syndrome where you fall in love with a player and can’t trade him.
Bye McFadden, Kelly, and ShoNasty.
——————————————————-
there u go again with that bullsh!t.stop this nonsense. u wanna trade 2 of our better younger players for draft picks. fugg draft picks!! yall have no damn sense. u dont give up on great young talent. kelly is older so he can go. let this sh1t play out and stop sayin if taiwan balls out. he aint proved sh!t yet and he may not even play this week.
December 29th, 2011 at 7:29 pm
Retro,
the only way we’re trading Pryor is if Jason Campbell re-signs a 2-year deal as a backup to Carson Palmer.
the way I see it?
Terrelle Pryor = future franchise QB for the Oakland Raiders

Just a week ago this place was full of pissing and moaning. Hue this carson Palmer that…now we are all jacked up.no matter what happens, the fact that we feel this going into the last game of the season makes this the best season we have had since 2002. That can not be argued.
December 29th, 2011 at 7:31 pm
another thing jhll u are wrong about monta and steph. they can play 2gether. u know it takes more than 2 damn players to win. monta aint a point guard he is a 2guard. u dont even know wtf u talkin about. steph runs the point up here. rose got shut down and he didnt just miss no 3’s. monta and steph kicked azz in that game but YOU didnt see that sh!t either. keep quiet and stay outta TOWN BIZNESS!!
December 29th, 2011 at 7:32 pm
What you fail to recognize in that scenario is that both of those young players are hurt more often that not.
Maybe it’s a Chaz hangover on my part.
If Taiwan Jones balls during this playoff run, and if we bring in a 3-4 DC, yeah I’m putting 2 of our better young players on the block.

Terrelle Pryor = future franchise QB for the Oakland Raiders
————
That’s one experiment I am nervous about. We will see in time. I can actually see Hue getting rid of Pryor and looking for a different QB. That was an Al pick.
December 29th, 2011 at 7:34 pm
You delusional W fans are the only ones bringing anything up.
I understand you like Curry and Monta, so your perspective is a bit slanted, imo.
Don’t understand how you can really argue for those 2 small guys starting in your backcourt from a defensive point of view.
Yeah, it “could” work. I guess we’ll see.
December 29th, 2011 at 7:35 pm
b@auce i dont agree with your monta bullsh!t but rudy gay is the only player i see trading him for. i wouldnt do it but i could see that happening. we dont need to do anything right now. monta aint the problem here. he is the best player and we finally have some depth to help him and steph out. ofcourse jhill laker lovin azz wouldnt know that.
December 29th, 2011 at 7:39 pm
Well at least we agree that Monta is your best player.
The rest of the league is fascinated with Curry.
You could get way more for Curry than you could for Monta.
You might be able to get Gordon, Okafor, and a draft pick for a package built around Curry.
December 29th, 2011 at 7:41 pm
wattup jhill. aint nobody delusional except u laker fans getting upstaged by the jv LA team down there. being small a backcourt doesnt mean sh1t if they can play. talent and determination wins out. what u think doesnt matter when they outscore the vast majority of the opposing backcourts. they needed help and now theyve got it. dubs playin much better d and we havent shot the ball as well as we usually do. when we do look out. we rebound and defend better. its also about team defense. the nba is a league full of horrible man defenders but u need to play a team concept. mullin wasnt a great defender but he was a good team defender when he played. we’ll see when your fakers come to town.
December 29th, 2011 at 7:45 pm
I was talking to a client of mine that is a big KC fan, about this weekend games. And he said a couple of things that sounded a bit interesting to me. Coming from the other side of the coin, I thought his comments might carry some value.
I told him that I was rooting for his Chiefs this weekend, and he said that KC was going to beat Denver, because 1, Romeo Crennel is coaching for his future, and 2, Orton is playing for his as well. Not to mention that Orton will have a good amount of knowledge about the Denver D and O, though the O might be a bit different now than what it was when he was there. That’s not to mention the added incentive that comes with playing your ex team that dumped you and the chance of knocking them out of the playoffs.
On the flipside to that, you have the Broncos that know Orton’s strenghts and weaknesses. And will know what to do to confuse him on D.
He made a good point that KC’s D with Crennel would be similar to NE’s D and will probably have a similar gameplan that NE used on Tebow, so the overall advantage will be on KC this weekend.
But then he also went to say that SD has the best team in the division but that the coaching sucks. And that Oakland will probably beat SD and make it to the playoffs, but that they won’t get passed the first game. Typical KC fan I guess.
Still though, his insight on the KC/Denver game was interesting I thought. For whatever it’s worth…

shawny isnt hurt as much as u say. this is his 1rst year missing significant time in only his 3rd year. yall give up too easy. guys get hurt and u have to deal with it. what if the draft picks u traded him for get hurt? do we trade them 2? shawny just like dmac is a football player. aint no way u get rid of one of your best defenders on a suspect defense. that make s no sense especially with him being so young. how about getting rid of older guys who have value and just sign a couple of key FA. fugg giving up the youngins.

I’m curious why your client and so many others keep thinking the Chargers have the best team.
They have very few play-makers on D, which is old.
They have an up and down running game with a fragile RB that fumbles and gets hurt often.
They lost a top D-Coordinator in Ron Rivera.
They have .500 talent.

——————————————————
The Oakland Raiders keep the Al Davis legacy alive and always will. As long as there are Oakland Raiders, there will always be Al Davis. When I see the Raiders, I always see Al Davis. Always have, always will. Al Davis is why I stuck with the Raiders thru the hard times. And I hope Hue coaches the Raiders for fifty more years. Al Davis is still the Oakland Raiders and his memory will last forever. If it weren’t for Al Davis, the Oakland Raiders would be as homogenized and steralized as all the other 31 teams. But they are not. They are the Oakland Raiders because of Al Davis. If any new owner ever comes along (God forbid) and tried to change the Oakland Raider image and the Al Davis legacy, I would stop following this team. But that will never happen in a million years beacause Amy Trask and Mark Davis will keep the legacy of Al Davis alive. Its right and only natural. I loved Al Davis when the Raiders were the team of the Decades and loved them in the lean years too. Take away the Al Davis legacy and you lose the spirit of the Oakland Raiders. They become another white bread team just like all the other 31 teams. Than can never happen and that will never happen. I have all the faith in the world the front office and management will constantly do all they can to keep the legacy of Al Davis alive. As it should be.

SD does not have the best team in the division. That team is riddled with holes. Their defense is horrible and full of scrubs. The only top tier players they have are Rivers and Gates ( who’s on his way out ). Jackson is a diva and only plays when he wants. And everyone down here isn’t sold on Ryan Mathews, a lot of them want him gone.
That whole team needs an overhaul.

======================================
Crennell is a very good defensive coordinator. If you read my posts of how to stop Tebow before the Dungver game, we didn’t do it, but defensive coordinators now know how to do it. The issue with Tebow is he is unique in the fact that unlike other “running backs”, by being the Q, he is not at a number disadvantage. Because of that He can just follow a pulling Guard and gain good yardage. The other issue is he runs out of passing formations pretty consistently. Funny but the best defense against him seems to be 4 man rush, man free, which is our base Defense.

Mike Singletary has NEVER been a defensive coordinator.
Never.
I don’t want him trying that out for the first time here.
I’ll take Mike Nolan before Singletary. Singletary’s too much emotion, not sure about his x’s and o’s.
If we’re going for a position coach and elevating him to D-coordinator, I’d sooner trust someone Hue has a history with.

But eff Teblow, it is on to the Dischargers. Rivers has been very un-Rivers like this season. Signs of discord maybe? His completion percentage is down, his Int’s are up. And passing is the bread and butter of the San Diego offense. To me a very easy way to defense River is the old Fritz Shurmur overload zone on the left side, and force Rivers to go to his left. As I said in the lst meeting, unlike guys like Brady or Rothleisberger or even Palmer, River is not very athletic, and moving him left basically negates his ability to toss the rock. In other news, we can only hope that Fumbalina, err Ryan Mathews plays. And it looks like Jared Gaither has finally started to turn into well, Jared Gaither. We Should have a field day whipping his ass from the RE spot.

we need a playmaking safety in the worst way. u can elimate big plays downfield with a ballhawking safety. id rather have that than a cb. the problem with our defense aside from the DC is that we dont have a star or 2. u have guys who play 2 hot and cold. we have some complimentary pieces but not that big piece that holds it all 2gether. whether we stay in a 4-3 or move to a 3-4 we have to get a star or 2 on defense.
December 29th, 2011 at 8:35 pm
Seems like the writing is on the wall Armond. Hue tried to bring in a 3-4 guy last year.
Houston and Bryant are better DE fits than ShoNasty, and I’m not sold on the idea of standing him up and playing him as an OLB.
But hey, we’ll let the new DC sort all that out. I just know we don’t need to leave valuable assets on the bench when we have holes in other positions.

Every take on this Sunday’s game has been mentioned. We
all know of it’s importance and we’re all hyped and ready to go.
A must win game, at home, final game of the year with possible playoff implications…doesn’t get any better than that.
We’ll have a story book ending, a happy ending, just like the two great movies currently showing: The “War Horse” and “I bought a Zoo.” = We’ll “WIN” and we’ll win big. Also, some winning combination elsewhere will get us into the playoffs. It’s just the way the cards are going to fall. Call it “fate” or “karma” or just our turn “out of the barrel.” But, some magical, mistic
power will prevale and we’ll get there.
You can take that to the bank! Go Raiders!

Huff and Branch aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. And Gio has certainly earned another contract.
I think stars can be born based on the DC consistently putting guys in a position to make plays. I think our LB talent is pretty solid but they are asked to do things that don’t play to their strengths.
I thought Huff was being played perfectly, but then he got injured.
Branch just needs to stay in the film room and he is going to be pretty damn good.

Al Davis was way more than all that. Thats only surface crap. He was a humanitarian, champion of civil rights causes, gave many athletes a second chance in life, loyal to those that were loyal to him, and probably many other things we will never know about. But his me against the establishment mentality gave hope to a lot of people who needed that spirit to take on the endeavors life had thrust their way. Why would anyone not want to keep the Al Davis legacy? As long as there is Silver and Black, there is Al Davis. Not that complicated.

Like I’ve said, Routt has to go. The Raiders need smart, efficient, aware players. They don’t need Seymour … NE let him go for a reason and there is no reason he should have made the pro-bowl. McClain needs to go as well. The O-line did a great job this year but the D-line sagged. Curry was a great addition. The DBs, the fill-in guys have done much better than expected but I think Bresnahan’s schemes hamper them. Giordano is a gamer. I give props to the DBs. They may not be top flight in talent but they are top flight in desire. Receivers are coming around but they need to stay healthy … sturdier shoes may be the key.
A question, with kickoff sailing through the end zone like the kickers are kicking from the 50 why don’t more teams really try to hang it up high, so the coverage teams have a bit more time to get down there and force the other team to fair catch on the five or so? Why bang it through the end zone? That to me is a waste. Skip it down the field or hang it up high and force a fair catch on the 5. Banging it through the end zone does nothing but bring it out to the 20.
December 29th, 2011 at 8:51 pm
In fact, once times caught up with Mr. Davis’ incredible forward-thinking efforts (black athletes and coaches, bigger/stronger/faster, aggressiveness), Mr. Davis and therefore the Raiders failed to adapt and have been stuck in mediocrity for 30 years now.

interesting thought regarding higher kicks. However, I don’t think kickers can get more than maybe an second on hang-time by kicking higher, and most kickoff units are only at about the opponents 40 yard-line when that kickoff goes out the end zone.
Adding 1 second of running time might only get defenders to about the 33 yard-line, while the ball is caught around the 5, and it allows for the possibility of a big return.
I’m not sure it would pin returners deep very often, but I appreciate your thinking outside the box.

Yes. He was hurt for the last month, and did not play very well during that time but he has played at a very high level, especially early in the season. And even if you don’t believe me, there are some posters here that hold Pro Football Focus in high regard. They had Seymour as a mid season All Pro, meaning playing the very top at his position for the lst half of the season. I happen to agree with that assessment.

“Dennis Thurman led the defensive backs for the Jets in 2009, helping the defense allow the fewest points, fewest passing yards and fewest total yards in the NFL.
◊ Spent six years coaching the Ravens secondary (2002-07), four as secondary coach, two as defensive assistant alongside Head Coach Rex Ryan…The team led the NFL with 126 interceptions and 18 interception returns for touchdowns while he was coaching Ed Reed (34 INT, 2002-07), Chris McAlister, Samari Rolle and Deion Sanders, among others.”

So it was Mike Nolan’s defense that has taken our manhood two years in a row.
If you can’t beat him. Put him on your staff.
====================================================
Mike Nolan can develop guys. I mean where the fook did Cameron Wake come from? Wake was a CFL guy and next thing you know he’s the new Lawrence Taylor. Same thing with Patrick Willis, Sopoaga, Abrayo Franklin and Dashon Goldson. Dude can flat out develop players that’s for sure.
December 29th, 2011 at 9:40 pm
I like the idea of a badass DC being a former head coach who flopped. Nolan and Spagnuola comes to mind here. Nolan’s dominant Defenses got him a Head Coach job. He flopped and returned to DC and dominated again. Spagnuola will do the same at Philly next year. Let’s get Nolan in here or Del Rio.
December 29th, 2011 at 9:43 pm
Whoever our new DC will be next year will be praised because Suck B doesn’t wear shoes.

And if you asked Mike he would want another Head Coaching job as soon as possible. Which brings up a problem. Do you see Hue Jackson hiring a guy with aspirations to cut his own throat? Therein lies the dilemma.
December 29th, 2011 at 9:44 pm
From what I’ve seen of Seymour the last 2 months,
- been single-blocked very often, and handled.
- career-low tackle total for a full season.
- has lacked discipline.
- His D unit sucks.
Not sure exactly what he’s done better than most at his position, though he did have a strong game vs Texans, when the entire team played for Mr. Davis.
December 29th, 2011 at 9:46 pm
Spagnuolo worked with Waufle in NY, he would be an ideal DC or Thurman whom Hue has a past with. Either way Chuck B and his meltdown D has to go.
December 29th, 2011 at 9:47 pm
Nolan has already failed as head coach, so if he coaches his butt off trying to get another shot, that’s great for whatever team he’s coaching for.
I doubt he’ll get a second chance, and Hue is very comfortable being Mr. Davis’ final hire, knowing he’s here for the long-haul with Mark’s blessing.

Nolan = Ray Rhodes, Very Good DC, not HC material.

===============================================
I would disagree with the single blocked and handled. For the last 5 weeks he has had a badly injured knee and has not played very well or very much. There are some games in that time period where he has only played a handful of snaps. His knee is finally starting to come back. As for tackle totals and a sucky D unit, and I was the one who blew this up, how the fook does your ILB play an ENTIRE GAME and come up with one or two tackles? That is what boggles the mind. I mean you could put pads and a hat on me, throw ME in there, and I would probably get credited for one or two tackles a game, just by guys running me over.

Problem is if the defense is playing well, and the offense can’t do anything, then you have the defensive coordinator go up to the head coach and say can’t you get a ****ing first down? and throw a punch at his head. (See Ryan, Buddy versus Kevin Gilbride)

A dilemma a GM will have for instance is this also…
We have Mike Wauffle (4-3 DL extraordinaire), and he’s worked with Spagnuolo before in NY. Stay 4-3 and hire Spagnuolo. Or hire a 3-4 DC and lose Wauffle in the process.
Dean Peas has extensive DC, LB, DB coaching in college and NFL. Dennis Thurman less so. Both might have 4-3 capabilities but would be 3-4. Nolan for sure is 3-4 specific.
If we go 3-4, we’d have too many DEs and not enough LBs and NTs. I know Peas would be a Fairbanks-Bullough 3-4 system, which is the DL playing 2-gap, all about occupying gaps and getting doubled to allow the LBs to make plays. Seymour extensive experience in this 3-4 system. Thurman has far less experience than Dean Peas, and would be part of Rex Ryan coaching tree, so would understand multiple defensive schemes but lacking experience being an actual DC.
December 29th, 2011 at 10:09 pm
All the best defensive teams use a 3-4. It’s time to switch.
Copy the Steelers on defense and the Patriots on offense.

It’s really not about systems, it’s about coaching. Let’s remember the Giants ran a 4-3 to take out the 18-0 Patriots, the best offensive team that I’ve ever seen. With that said, bring in Spags.
December 29th, 2011 at 10:20 pm
Spagnuolo-Wauffle would be a good combination. Super Bowl winning experience on Defense, know what it takes, what to demand of players, understand complexities, have beaten high-powered offensive teams.
December 29th, 2011 at 10:24 pm
3-4 or 4-3 doesn’t matter unless you can find the right coach and the right players.
I like Dean Pees because he has been successful running both systems in New England. He was able to adapt depending on the personnel available to him.
As I’ve said before, there’s no guarantee that the Raiders will be able to acquire the necessary pieces to make a 3-4 work. Nor is there a guarantee they could acquire the pieces they need to dramatically improve the 4-3 they run.
The real key here is going to be finding a GM who is capable of luring the right players to Oakland.
December 29th, 2011 at 10:33 pm
Sorry but we’re not going to find another DC who is willing to come here just to be a DC again. He either has to be a HC with a defensive backround who is hoping to get another head coaching stint or an assistant looking to move up the food chain.

December 29th, 2011 at 10:43 pm
Spagnuolo would be good choice because after his 3 year stint at the Rams being a HC, he has shown he is not HC material, and will be happy to get a job as a DC again, wont be aspiring anytime soon, just doing his job and working alongside Wauffle again.

There are 108 permutations of wins and losses on Sunday…we make the playoffs in 44 of them…we do not make the playoffs if we lose…Therefore, we must win and accept nothing else.
After that, our chances are very good, probably 44 out of 54…but only if we win.
WIN WIN WIN…that is all we need to think about or do!

Its obvious we have a deadly team. I mean why else would the bungles want a 1st rounder in next years draft if we make the afc championship game this year. They knew what they were gonna miss in palmer and knew what force he would bring to the already potent offense we have.
December 30th, 2011 at 12:31 am

i dont think he has, and he keeps defending his decisions to do it, blaming execution. he’s done it again after it has failed from a previous attempt. and it’s also similar to the 3rd and short situations with a long bomb (especially when clock could’ve been burned).
not to hate on Hue, coaches from time to time over-do it. Mike Smith falcons vs Saints, Belichick vs Colts last year, where it was done inside their own 20. The problem is understanding percentages. Hue just seems to do it all the time, and DCs are probably well aware of his propensity.
That said, imagine Mike Leach was HC of the Raiders! I actually would love to see him as HC or OC of the team, but with it would come all that crazy stuff to gray one’s hair.

not sure why any team would worry about facing us in the playoffs.
We didn’t exactly look ready vs Patriots, Packers, or Lions – all playoff teams.
Pretty much every playoff team knows they’ll put up 30+ on us, except Houston.
December 30th, 2011 at 1:46 am
what lesson would Hue learn? That his aggressive play-calling has turned the Raiders from bottom-5 offense to top-12 two years in a row?
That you don’t go conservative when your D can’t hold a lead?
What lesson, exactly?
December 30th, 2011 at 1:52 am
That you take the points on offer, especially when you can make it a two or three score game in the process, and understand when to take a 2pt conversion attempt and when to take the PAT.
Hue aggressive? Not so much this year. Not seen the same handful of plays called every drive? The constant conservative calls at the start of must-win games, that only result in 3 and outs on back to back opening drives (see miami and green bay games).
December 30th, 2011 at 2:02 am
lol, must-win games? Which games did Hue waltz into not thinking they were a must-win game?
See how far you have to stretch a silly argument?
If your O is your best chance to win a game, then try and win it with the O. Simple.

December 30th, 2011 at 2:13 am
Dolphins and Packers games were must-win, to you know win the division, be in control of your fate, and not have the Broncos take a game lead and then have to rely on results, like we are now.
Re-watch the Raiders first Qtr offensive play-calling, because you obviously didn’t pay attention.
Dive-dive-short/incomplete-punt
opposition marches easily upfield via the pass, up 7-0
Dive-endaround-short/incomplete-punt
opposition marches easily upfield via the pass, up 14-0
endaround-dive-dive-short/complete
dive-dive-screen-punt
then 21-0
later, as the game is clearly blowing out, now we start going downfield more.
Palmer was signed to be a downfield guy, and he has, but early on when we have to be aggressive in our gameplan, Hue instead dials up the “dont lose” mentality and as we see in this pass-friendly league, passing is the way to set the platform, other teams drive at will on us.
Establishing the run, etc, blah blah, spread the opposition out early and make them fear the pass early, will only help Bush more taking guys out of the box, having the LBs hesitate more, not cheat up expecting the “establishment of the run”.
Hue not aggressive or unpredictable on the early downs and early drives. Sure, in late game situations, and 3rd and 4th downs, and when we’re down by a lot, or Hue can see a lead is not going to hold THEN he gets more aggressive.
December 30th, 2011 at 2:13 am

Mark Davis is that new owner. He’s already said that he’s nothing like his dad. He’s inevitably going to hire a GM, something the Raiders have never had before. So, best of luck. Some fan you are, btw. Ditching your team because of an owner change? Doesn’t sound too loyal.

It’s the person who makes every last football decision in the front office. And whoever it is, they’re going to do it their way. Otherwise they wont’ come here. So you tell me how much Mark is going to hang on to his dad’s way of doing things so long as he’s searching for a general manager.

Take away the Al Davis legacy and you lose the spirit of the Oakland Raiders. They become another white bread team just like all the other 31 teams.

Just silly.
The Pittsburgh Steelers have a blue collar identity, through the fans, the players, and the city. Remember the Super Bowl a few years ago? If anything, Arizona was your white bread team. Everyone was looking for Kurt Warner (the original Tebow) to be the hero, instead it turned out to be Santonio Holmes. (nothing “white bread” about him…)
Would you consider the Green Bay Packers a run of the mill, homogenized entity? The fans own the team! They have no owner! That’s unique.
Truth is, Al Davis was much more of a run of the mill, greedy businessman than you want to believe. He just wasn’t every smart in the end, and didn’t succeed. But it wasn’t for a lack of him trying to take his fans to the cleaners.

In that sense I think Al(RIP) had it wrong to mix rookie Wrs with a rookie QB. Now that DHB has been able to work with Vet, Competent QBs you have seen improvement

I don’t know exactly how size effect the performance of the Secondary, but the fact is we replaced Aso 6′2 with Sheppard at 5′10 and retained Routt at about 6′. To me this seems like a very undersized secondary, if we MAYBE had at least one taller player back there we could be more effective against some of the taller Wrs who have burned us.

Not until people stop watching and talking about him will it end. When all the network execs see that the Patriots-Bronco’s game was the highest viewed regular season game in 4 years, expect at least 3 prime time Bronco’s games next season.

Morning DLF!! Wish I could get one of those medium-rare steaks with Hwnrdr on Sunday, lol.
Everyone was watching Tebow, IMO. And while I think a majority of the people watching were rooting against him, that’s what he does.
Whether you love him or love to hate him, people watch.

Armond,
so what you’re saying is.. re-sign Kirk Morrison & Frantz Joseph this offseason?
December 30th, 2011 at 6:53 am
So what happened to Denver quarterback Tim Tebow last week against Buffalo? In watching the tape, Tebow went back to some of his bad habits. He held the ball. He sailed the ball. And he wasn’t patient in the pocket, feeling phantom pressure again. Tebow had a wide-open Eric Decker down the left sideline early in the game. He would’ve been able to make a big play, but his lack of arm strength was exposed in a painful incomplete pass. He did come back and make a nice throw to Daniel Fells for a touchdown, but it was downhill after that. He threw high much of the game and into coverage. The interception return for a touchdown by Bills safety Jairus Byrd was a rookie-type mistake. He thought Decker was open down the seam, but he never saw Byrd. Bad read. The second interception for a touchdown came when he was hit while holding the ball too long. The final pick of the game was his throwing to a blanketed receiver in the end zone. It was not a good game for Tebow. It showed his flaws as a passer. Once the Broncos got down by more than 10, they were done.

DC candidates seem to be the hot topic on this blog!
If we hire Reggie McKenzie as GM, I wonder if he’ll lure a few asst coaches with him?
Winston Moss, Mike Trgovac, Kevin Greene or Darren Perry?
what about Joe Philbin as HC and Tom Clements as OC?
those guys made Aaron Rodgers the best QB in the NFL!
Mike McCarthy gets WAY too much credit
Would be nice to see them groom Terrelle Pryor the same way behind veteran Carson Palmer imo
December 30th, 2011 at 7:08 am
Am I the only one who notices that when Tebow throws the ball, he also kicks himself in the ass at the same time?
December 30th, 2011 at 7:09 am
Goodole..exactly… If Kc can force Touchdown Jesus to throw then they have a shot at beating the Donks…. Also key is that missing donkey pass rush…the Donks aren’t Playing as well now as they were when TT first started… Diffrent team…

Probably not, because we have a bigger need for stout end over a jack-of-all trades nickle back.
However,I was screaming about it during that draft 2 years ago, and punt returns are STILL a major issue for us, and we struggle to have guys even come up and fair catch the ball correctly.

Glad I’m not the only one who thinks that. Pryor seems like a cool novelty or gimmick guy for certain scenarios. As our franchise QB I have way to many questions with Pryor that probaly do not end with the right answers. Hopefully Carson is good for 4 years and in 2 years we draft a QB to groom behind him for the following 2 years (like Favre/Rodgers). IMO that is the best way to maintain success without having a rebuilding year.

The NFL Network guys, like Marshall and Deion dont hate on the raiders as much as the bspn punks.
Pryor is NOT the future, another pet project that needs years to develop. Maybe in 5 years if he works his butt off, I will give him a chance.
Palmer, on pace for 30 ints’ over the course of a 16 game season, is the future now, and will be for the next 2-3 seasons, but come on, 8 games 15 picks? that’s almost 2 picks a game. Dude better cut down on the picks, he is on record setting pace, no chance in the playoffs if he keeps making WTF thtows.

MM, has been what I thought he would be. He is out of position as far as our current defensive scheme.
The man can cover tight ends , yet has difficulty in open space and reading the play and oppossing teams QB.
His strength is in the box and if we had a d-coordinator like the dude in Pitt, MM can be similar to Polamalu in moving him around to blitz or cover small areas in the field.

I was asked the other day what impact Rod Woodson had on our DB’S.
My response is look at the penaltys the DB’s are getting called on them, very agressive in coverage and fighting like arm punching while the ball almost lands in the opposing players arms. Those trademarks of Woodson. The rules have changed for the agressive nature on how you tackle, but not while the ball is in the air, and I see the mentality of it’s your ball also, so go and get it.

Well, if Hue wins and goes 9-7 I don’t think they can fire him. If he goes 8-8 with a 1-4 finish to the season they would be justified in firing him.
Either way, Chucky B has to go and Hue needs to be replaced as GM….even if we make the playoffs.

Enough has been said and written already.
Seymour and Palmer are the veteran leaders and highest paid players in the team. They must set a positive tone from the get go.
No INTs for Carson and no stupid penalties for Big Rich. These two need to show mental toughness throughout the game, and get this toughness spread out through the team.
There has to be one full game, coached and played, left on this team, no more 4th quarter meltdowns, no more early jitters. The Raiders must have the attitude to blow up the doltz at all phases of the game, from the opening kickoff to the final gun.
This is what has been promised all season, no more excuses, either get it done or git da fok out of Oaktown.
December 30th, 2011 at 9:52 am
If there is any truth to NFL conspiracies THIS is the week you’ll see it.
The league and the networks would loooove to have Tebow in the playoffs; it means big $$$ and ratings.
I was told long ago, whenever you have a question about why something happened, follow the money.
Believe me, the refs will be watching the Raiders very closely this Sunday.
Look for some weird calls; lots of “holds”, PI’s, etc. etc. etc.
The Chargers aren’t the only thing the Raiders will be battling come Sunday imo.
December 30th, 2011 at 9:56 am
Yes, but great Raider teams of the past have beaten the team in front of them and the refs! What team will show up Sunday?

It’s neither here nor there, but it bugs me that people throw the “Holy Roller” game as an example of it being an even playing field when it comes to conspiracies.
RIDICULOUS.
They wanna compare AFC championship games and the ‘Tuck Rule’ to a early in the year REGULAR SEASON GAME.

My question to you, is this. Do you think Rod Woodson can become a defensive coordinator for the raiders.
Many positives and negatives, but one that I can’t see is not enough experience as a coach. that is hog wash, Woodson knows how to game plan and has the smarts to define his strengths and knows what he needs help with. So before you answer, Woodson can find a savvy veteran coach to help out with some finer details, but I want him to implement his style, that he learned from Lebeau, Ryan, and others.

I understand the thought that it would be nice if we get in as the 6th seed and go to Houston rather than host Pitt or Baltimore, but I’ve come to the opinion that it would be better to win the division and host a first-round game.
Raiders-Steelers at the Coliseum after a 9-year playoff drought. In the season of Al’s passing. Come on, does it get better than that?
Bottom line: I’ll be happy no matter what happens as long as we get in. I just think Raiders-Steelers in Oakland would be more fun than Raiders-Texans in Houston.

December 30th, 2011 at 10:38 am
I’d be in favor of Rod as DC. The guy’s a winner, bottom line.
He’s respected. He’s a guy you’d want to play for.
He knows the game. He was a smart, skilled player for over a decade who played under some great coordinators.
The way to make that move feasible is to have a veteran DC with no ambition for the DC job serving as an advisor, helping Rod grow into the role. Somebody who knows the ropes but would clearly not be in a position to challenge the perceived chain of command. Can’t think of a great example of who’s out there that would fit this profile, but I’m sure there are plenty of options available.

DHB, DMO, and JFORD open up the run game. No way you can stack the box when these 3 guys are playing.
Mbush had his best game in SD, the passing game was clicking, the box could not be stacked. MBUSH had holes that I could have ran through for positive yards.
The even bigger wildcard is TJONES….
DMAC is our HR threat no doubt, he houses most of the runs from MBUSH and we would be that much more dangerous however, we are dangerous with our 3 best Wr playing in the same game…

What was the scenario for us to have the wild card?
We win and cincy loses then what?

If Tenn wins then we need the jets to win. We win a 4 way tie between us cin ten nyj, but lose a 3 way tie between cin and ten
December 30th, 2011 at 11:29 am
Do people really think that if McFadden could play that he would make that much of a difference right away? Dude hasn’t played in 2 months, he’s still not even healthy enough to practice, if he did play he wouldn’t be at 100 percent and would risk re-injuring his foot. I honestly think that we would be better off with Bush at 100 percent than McFadden still recovering and with 2 months of rust and inactivity to break through. If you’re looking forward to seing DMC playing, you are already looking forward to next season.

I was hoping the Balt/Cin and Den/KC game were the early games But I suppose it is better this way.

But we do not lose a three way tie between us, Cincy and the Jets correct?

I thought the Jets winning was some key for us to beat the tie-breakers collectively even if we didnt own them over individual teams.
Whoever came up with this used to work at Milton Bradley apparently.

I wish it was Sunday right fukken now!!! I might lose my mind waiting.
CODE BLACK protocols are indicating postive outcome!
December 30th, 2011 at 11:41 am
Here’s how I’ve been looking at it for simplicity’s sake:
2 options:
(1) To Win Division we need KC to beat Denver
(2) Wildcard- We want Jets to win and CIN to lose.
that’s it…and I really dont think that 1 of those 2 scenarios is that far-fetched. Jets can beat Miami and Raven can beat CIN.

Here’s what you need with a Raiders win:
Early Games:
- Texans over Titans
or
- Jets over Dolphins
Late Games:
- KC over Denver
or (if we get at least 1 of the 2 results we’re looking for in the early games)
- Baltimore over Bengals.
So we’ll know at about the start of our game if we have two doors in or just one.
December 30th, 2011 at 11:51 am
Root for Baltimore also…

About the only advice Seymour can give is how to commit stupid penalties and get ejected. He has 17 tackles this season total, one more tackle than Rout has penalties. And he made the pro bowl? Gimme a F’ing break what a joke. Just beat SD and pray that the Chefs beat the Donkeys. And hey Seymour, make some tackles for a change ok! Try not to get ejected you Poser.
