Raiders practice: Same as it ever was

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Friday, December 30th, 2011 at 11:47 am in Oakland Raiders.

Subbing for Steve Corkran today . . .

Media window has closed for today with no changes in the status of Raiders players. Michael Huff and Jacoby Ford are on the field and should be good to go against San Diego.

Huff should resume his role as starter, and Ford ought to be available in some for at receiver, although it’s doubtful he’ll return any kickoffs. Taiwan Jones is on the field as well, but given Hue Jackson’s comments Thursday about needing to see him “turn it loose,” his availability is up in the air.

No sign of defensive tackle John Henderson and running back Darren McFadden, who will be ruled “out” in a couple of hours when Jackson talks to the media post-practice.

One interesting sight _ CBS analyst and former Raiders quarterback Rich Gannon in civil, friendly coversation with senior exec John Herrera. Herrera threatned to have Gannon banned from the facility a few years back, believing Gannon to be too harsh when assessing his former team.

Always seemed a little silly. Gannon’s critiques were always on-point and made in part because he was rightly frustrated at seeing what the Raiders had become.

Here’s what you need with a Raiders win:

    Early Games:
    - Texans over Titans
    or
    - Jets over Dolphins

    Late Games:
    - KC over Denver
or (if we get at least 1 of the 2 results we’re looking for in the early games)
    - Baltimore over Bengals.

So we’ll know at about the start of our game if we have two doors in or just one.

The always reliable San Diego Union-Tribune expects V-Jax to sit out against the Raiders, but coach Norv Turner is reportedly “as hopeful (this week) as he was last week” about Jackson’s status. Turner said the fact that the Chargers are essentially playing a meaningless game this weekend won’t factor into whether or not V-Jax plays. His status will be updated Friday. There is something wrong with that franchise. The shine is off A.J. Smiths shoes. His last few drafts have not been very good. He has had some problem players, Ryan “fumbalina” Mathews can run but he coughs it up more than choking infant. Norphus is finished as well. And They are moving to LA yet they don’t want anyone to know about it. Get out the butter and jam. They’re toast.

Plus he has never played with Palmer, and it takes a bit of time to get the protection and other timings down. Being a back he doesn’t lead a lot of reps, but still, I don’t think he would have the same amount of value right now as when he went down. Of course on the other hand, he is fresh.

Retaining Michael Bush isn’t going to be up to the Raiders. I’m sure they’ll make him a competitive offer, but they can’t afford to use the franchise tag on him. If he chooses to go elsewhere in hopes of being a starter (which won’t be San Deigo anyway, with Ryan Matthews there) then the Raiders could do a lot worse than filling his role with Tolbert, who can grind out tough yards as well as catch the ball.

Never have seen a guy STAND on the sidelines with pads on (in week what? 7?) after getting hurt and be out for the season. Doesnt happen. And dont talk about getting the shot…if Hue knew he wouldnt play the second half he would NOT get a shot.

Let’s have this discussion again in March, and if I’m wrong, you can rightfully at that time thump your chest and I will acknowledge your exsistence at that time.

If Reggie McKenzie takes the GM job, look for Winston Moss or Kevin Greene as DC options.

Dennis Thurman will also be in the running.

Raiders should also take a hard look at Dean Pees. Steve Spagnuolo and Jack Del Rio are options as well.

    ^^^^^^^
I have been saying the same. The new DC choice will just depend on if the new GM and Hue want to convert to the 3-4 or stick with the 4-3.

Whys that? I thought the crazy ole coot some people hated and thought was ruining the Raiders is gone now?

  120. DKnight007 Says:

Bush needs to remain a Raider….period.

The new GM and Huey need to realize how important it is to have a two good LEGIT RB’s in this league.

By keeping Bush, it also would provide the Raiders with flexibility when it comes to possibly trading away, DMC, Bush or T Jones IF the right offer comes along.

  121. inonewordraider Says:

Tolbert and VJax practiced today, Matthews didn’t listed as questionable, SD is going all in

  122. DKnight007 Says:

Raiders offense should be able to maintain drives and score at will against this Charger defense.

Huey, Saunders and Carson need to pick the Charger D apart and do what they want on offense with Ford, D Moore, Bush, Reece, DHB, Murphy, Chaz, Boss and maybe even T Jones coming into the mix this weekend.

Myers can even catch a pass or two!

Carson just needs to take care of the ball and the receivers need to stay focused and catch the ball first and everything after that will take care of itself.

Raiders defense needs to clamp down, play smart penalty free football and get to Cry Me a Rivers and smart in the secondary.

LB’s just need tobe patient and fill the gaps on running plays and do not over pursue. Stay disciplined!

  123. KoolKell Says:

Hope they CAN keep Michael Bush. They’ll have to pay him starter’s money. He’s gained 1000 yds off the bench.

As for the Lakers…Kobe thinks he is still 25 and his game is fading as fast as his hairline…they need more athletes to deal with the Western Conf in the playoffs for sure……OKC was tough last year but Westbrook is a big problem for them if they wanna win a title this year. He has the look of a guy who doesnt like to be told what to do.He has issues being a PG but wants to be a scoring star while Durant is easily the best scorer in the NBA. I need to see Rolando McClain become the RoBeast….any gap that opens up he needs to close it and smash the fk outta anyone who comes thru that line…..time to man up. You aint a rookie anymore…this he just learning schit aint flying with me. He needs to go nuts loike ray Lewis did after his legal schit. Take it out on the opposing team you big mthfka

Where is the hunger? Why no desire to be respected? Seems like he has the tools but once again another guy who’s head is not into football.

Yeah man I dont get it…but hopefully this sunday the bulb flickers on and he realizes he is a professional and that means something and he has a job to do. His job from day one when Al drafted him was to be the qb of a hard hitting ferocious defense
    =====================================================

McClain has strung two decent games back to back. Not good, but decent games. One of the big problems is if you asked McClain he would tell you he’s playing very well. Which that disconnect is mind boggling. At least DHB knew he was struggling. I would have graded McClain at a D to D+ level all year. The last two games he has probably played at a C+ level. I’ll take the improvement at this point.

I was excited when we got McClain like the rest of us. I hope it changes, but I would agree he is off base in evaluating his play. Seems like he has a little Sapp/Moss in him. Only shows up on Tuesdays to get his check.

    ==============================================

I was as well. I thought he was a perfect fit for our needs. Normally in a 4/3 you want smaller quicker MLB than McClain, so it could be a system mismatch. I am not yet ready to write him off, but I am getting awfully close.

  193. FreddieB Says:

    SB,
Agree, not ready to write him off either. Finally, Al drafts the player pegged for that slot and it may not work out. All the “experts” laughed at the DHB pick. Nice that DHB is the one laughing now.

What!? Gannon is going to be the T.V. color commentator? I would rather watch a black and white tv, with Marv Albert commentating. Jerry, Gannon was NOT “spot on” on his commentary. He was effusively critical, as if trying to convey that he is a true professional and objective observer. Even when commentating on the team that he lead into the worst superbowl beating any Raider team has ever suffered. I hate Gannon’s insipid analysis. I hope he is not the T.V. commentator N.Y. day! fk Gannon!

  196. sirblitzalot Says:

Regarding McClain. I like what I have seen in terms of effort and focus. He demonstrated a lot against the Chiefs. He was making tackles, blocking passes, being a critical factor! I hope he contributes his 100%. If that dude unbridles his telent, you are going to see a twinkle of what Al’s genius envisioned! RAIDER NATION! I can’t wait for Sunday
