Raiders practice: Same as it ever was

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Friday, December 30th, 2011 at 11:47 am in Oakland Raiders.

Subbing for Steve Corkran today . . .

Media window has closed for today with no changes in the status of Raiders players. Michael Huff and Jacoby Ford are on the field and should be good to go against San Diego.

Huff should resume his role as starter, and Ford ought to be available in some for at receiver, although it’s doubtful he’ll return any kickoffs. Taiwan Jones is on the field as well, but given Hue Jackson’s comments Thursday about needing to see him “turn it loose,” his availability is up in the air.

No sign of defensive tackle John Henderson and running back Darren McFadden, who will be ruled “out” in a couple of hours when Jackson talks to the media post-practice.

One interesting sight _ CBS analyst and former Raiders quarterback Rich Gannon in civil, friendly coversation with senior exec John Herrera. Herrera threatned to have Gannon banned from the facility a few years back, believing Gannon to be too harsh when assessing his former team.

Always seemed a little silly. Gannon’s critiques were always on-point and made in part because he was rightly frustrated at seeing what the Raiders had become.

One April day in 2004 A.J. Smith had Drew Brees, Eli Manning and Rivers on his team.

The two he let go have both won Super Bowls!

I’m not sure what you guys think McFadden is going to do against Pittsburgh or Baltimore.
    ————

    Um… run?

Why not have him back if healthy?

Any NFL team can be beaten in any given week. Fk Pitt and Baltimore (except for this week, we’re cool, LOL).

    —————-

Well first of all, that’s a big if.

Secondly, you act as if any top running back has carried his team against the Steelers or Ravens defense.

If the Raiders want to beat either of those teams, they’re not going to be able to lean on McFadden to do so.

  • LA to TheBay

    YA,

I wouldn’t think McFadden could be pre-injury McFadden so soon anyway.

But another weapon to the aresnal wouldn’t hurt.

  • Thec07

DMAC will not have his “game legs” under him, nor will he be in “game shape” at this point in the season having missed all the time he has. Now if we play a few more weeks past next sunday, he could have an impact…

    John Herrera for GM!

  • Chris in NY

I think if we can just get in, McFadden will return to practice next week and be a go in the playoffs. I wouldn’t expect him to shoulder a full load, but I think he’d be a go and try to get him 10 to 15 touches and basically a 50/50 split with Bush.

It will be 12 weeks since the injury as of next week. With all that would be on the line, I think that would be enough time to give it a go.

  • LA to TheBay

I assume then that Gannon is doing the game? Appropriate.

Vincent Jackson (groin) was held out of practice again on Thursday.

One of Hue’s first decisions in the offseason is to fire Herrera. That guy is pure negativity and an ass kissing yes man. No need for his brown nosing ways now that Al is gone.

    =======================================

Plus he has never played with Palmer, and it takes a bit of time to get the protection and other timings down. Being a back he doesn’t lead a lot of reps, but still, I don’t think he would have the same amount of value right now as when he went down. Of course on the other hand, he is fresh.

Tolbert is a FA after the season. Would be a nice pickup if the Raiders can’t retain Bush. Tolbert seems to give the Raiders some trouble in short-yardage and goalline situations, so it would be nice to get him out of San Diego.

  • DKnight007

The new GM/Personnel man should fire Herrera without a doubt.

He brings too much negativity and baggage to this organization.

    ————–

Retaining Michael Bush isn’t going to be up to the Raiders. I’m sure they’ll make him a competitive offer, but they can’t afford to use the franchise tag on him. If he chooses to go elsewhere in hopes of being a starter (which won’t be San Deigo anyway, with Ryan Matthews there) then the Raiders could do a lot worse than filling his role with Tolbert, who can grind out tough yards as well as catch the ball.

  • LA to TheBay

    I’m geeked.

Frontrunners for Oakland Raiders GM position:

    1. Reggie McKenzie

    2. YoungAmerican

  • Chris in NY

I like Lonyae Miller from the practice squad as a potential No. 2 back next year if we lose Bush. Or, I suppose he could be No. 3 if it’s DMC-Taiwan. I think Miller has the potential to be a good all-around back. Raiders may be looking for more of a short yardage, Zack Crockett type though.

  • fingers

Im allover Reggie McKennzie for GM …
Maybe even Del Rio for DC ..

Get this team back on track destroying the NFL

  • raiderinparadise

    @Fingers

Jack Del Rio is key to getting the 4-3 defense where it needs to be.

I fully endorse Jack Del Rio and his USC ties with Hue might be the kicker to get him a job in cali. low stress, and just coach what he is great at, the defensive side of the ball.

  • YoungAmerican

If Reggie McKenzie takes the GM job, look for Winston Moss or Kevin Greene as DC options.

Dennis Thurman will also be in the running.

Raiders should also take a hard look at Dean Pees. Steve Spagnuolo and Jack Del Rio are options as well.

  • daraider09

Lets stop talking about DMAC. He will NOT be apart of this run. Either he punked out (telling trainers it hurts too bad) or Hue is making the dumbest decision for a playoff team. Simple as that.

Never have seen a guy STAND on the sidelines with pads on (in week what? 7?) after getting hurt and be out for the season. Doesnt happen. And dont talk about getting the shot…if Hue knew he wouldnt play the second half he would NOT get a shot.

  • YoungAmerican

Or is Mike Nolan going to be available??

    —————

Depends on the extent to which the Dolphins clean house after the season. Wouldn’t be surprised to see Nolan considered for the HC job in Miami – not that that would be a good idea, it just wouldn’t surprise me.

    ============================================

The first couple of games Gaither was fresh and motivated and played very well compared to Dombrowski. Now after taking a pounding for the last four weeks Gaither is more beaten up and back to playing like Jared Gaither, the guy the Ravens gave up on. The question is whether Gaither will suck it up for the finale, or mail it in, as he is known to do.
