I am having trouble explaining the 1-4 collapse other than Hue lost the locker room.
Maybe it started with the Palmer trade and a core group of players that were more loyal to Campbell than to Hue. I know that the key losses can all be placed firmly at the feet of the defense, but I don’t get the feeling that the entire team was willing to go to the wall for Hue. Maybe his personality is just to duplicitous to inspire that kind of loyalty and commitment. I believe I may have drank to much of the koolaid again.
January 3rd, 2012 at 10:56 am
IF the Raiders hired a new head coach, it would probably be a defensive-minded one. He’d already have an established QB and OC, and wouldn’t have to worry so much about that side of the ball. He could focus on working with the GM to rebuild the defense.
Personally, I think Gregg Williams and Mike Zimmer would be interesting choices along those lines. But I still think a new GM will keep Hue for at least another season, barring a huge clash of personalities and philosophies.

S-back,
could be the McClain incident or his mani/pedi articles & pictures ???
January 3rd, 2012 at 11:00 am
If I could play GM, this would be my wish list:
Dean Pees as DC
Trade Darren McFadden for a 2nd
Trade Tommy Kelly for a 3rd
Trade Richard Seymour for a 4th and 5th
Trade Rolando McClain for a 4th
This will give the Raiders considerable salary cap relief (if I’m not mistaken, it would clear about $30 million from the books for 2012). They should restructure the contracts of Michael Huff, Kamerion Wimbley, Stanford Routt, and Carson Palmer if they haven’t already.
Then they need to re-sign Tyvon Branch, Marcel Reece, Desmond Bryant, Stephon Heyer, Matt Giordano, Jon Condo, and make a competitive offer to Samson Satele.
2 – RB Doug Martin or RB Ryan Wilson
3 – CB Leonard Johnson
3 (compensatory) – OL Lucas Nix
4 – LB Nigel Bradham or LB Keenan Robinson
4 – DE Olivier Vernon or DE Jake Bequette
4 (compensatory) – OT Jeff Allen
5 – DT Marcus Forston
5 – WR Lavasier Tuinei
6 – S Harrison Smith or S George Iloka
Then go big in FA. Need some big-time playmakers, in particular to help the Raiders seal the edge against the run and pressure the QB with their four-man front. So:
Sign DE Cliff Avril
Sign DT Red Bryant
Sign MLB Dan Connor
Sign WLB Manny Lawson or DeAndre Levy
Sign RB Mike Tolbert
Sign QB Shaun Hill or Chad Henne
Let go of WR T.J. Houshmanzadeh, QB Kyle Boller, OT Khalif Barnes, OG Cooper Carlisle, LB Darryl Blackstock, DE Trevor Scott, DE Mason Brodine, DT John Henderson, S Jerome Boyd, CB Bryan McCann, and CB Chris Johnson.

#1049 sorry but that’s your second bad post today. if you think being a GM is such a piece of cake. some have it, some don’t. even former great HCs or players dont translate to great GMs. People like Al in his prime, they dont fall from trees.
————————————-
I know it sounds crazy, but it takes an eye for talent, an understanding of people and, let’s be honest, a lot of luck. The skills are a little different than those of a head coach and maybe that’s why some former HCs have struggled at it.

That’s why you don’t pass up the opportunity to hire a GM who has a midas touch from organization to organization (polian, newsome). Or guys who have been groomed and helped build several super bowl teams (the packer guys).

Dejavu,
I would like to believe hue can learn from his mistakes, but the evidence is to the contrary. Hue nearly cost us the texans game by not kicking the fg and leaving points on the field and he should have learned a lesson from that, but he didn’t and he then cost us the game and a playoff appearance by not kicking a fg in the lions game. HUD is either to stubborn or too stupid to learn from his mistakes.
——————————
I think Hue is in over his head with all the things that happened this year. He is stubborn, but he must learn from it or he won’t be a HC again. I think he needs to be put in his place as HC and needs some pressure put on him from Mark and a new GM. Hue answers to them, not the other way around. Get a solid GM, instill discipline and let Hue know what you expect of him. If Hue continues on this power trip, then show him the door. Hue has no discipline or anyone to answer to as of now, and that’s a problem. Starts with setting standards with Hue and let it trinkle on down.
January 3rd, 2012 at 11:02 am
Chris in ny
A new dc etc with hue as hc might be successful, but who makes that call? Hue the gm?
A néw gm should not be saddled with a hc they did not Hire, unless that hc earned that respect. I don’t think hue earned that right be going 8-8, even if most of the blame goes on the defense.
January 3rd, 2012 at 11:03 am
Can someone please explain to me why we didn’t pick up Gaither again? Could of been playing RT for us.
Dude manhandled Wimbley all game long.
Wimbley got most of his sacks against a backup LT last time they played.
January 3rd, 2012 at 11:03 am
Dakota, to answer your question from the last post:
I think that if Hue gets to pick his GM he would go with an executive-cap type of guy to handle those issues and he would keep control of football operations and probably hire some scouts or personnel guy with a low profile, so he would pretty much make his leash much shorter because everything would be on him.
That’s fine with me, we let him make the move for Palmer so now the whole team is tied to his success, at least for the next 2 years with Carson at the helm.
So, like Chris in NY said earlier, we have to double down on Hue now.
We can’t clean house and start over, the roster is full of young players under contract and Hue is probably the best guy to coach Palmer.
We are closer to the playoffs than we’ve been in 8 years, starting over would take a couple of years at least and with no guarantee of success.
Right now, the playoffs are closer with Hue than without him, so let’s roll with the guy, at least he has some balls.
And a new GM might fail too, it’s not like a magic cure you know, it’s a gamble either way but I like most of what I’ve seen from Hue, so keep him and let him try it his way.
January 3rd, 2012 at 11:04 am
The GM will meet with Hue, and only then will decide what he has earned.
January 3rd, 2012 at 11:05 am
Teams may not interview assistants from another team for either a lateral move or a head coaching opportunity during the season. The lone exception to this rule comes when teams want to interview assistants for head coaching jobs while the current team is in the playoffs. As there is an urgency to hire new head coaches for some non-playoff teams, the NFL does allow teams to request permission to interview a postseason participant’s assistants during the wild card week for teams who have the bye that week. They can also request permission to do so during the first week of Super Bowl preparations as long as there is a two-week break between the conference championships and the Super Bowl. The team only has one chance to talk to the assistant coach, once permission is granted, before the coach’s team is eliminated from the playoffs.

——————————–
We did win three straight with Palmer. I really don’t think that has anything to do with it. If we stuck with Boller we would’ve been lucky to get to 6 wins on the season anyway.
Here’s your 1-4:
- @Miami: Just doesn’t seem to be a good matchup for us. They were peaking and were actually one of the best teams in the NFL in the second half of the year. No kidding. Major letdown game.
- @GB: They were a 15-1 team this year. Palmer made some mistakes. Running game was non-existant. D played to form.
- Det: Really should’ve won this one. The effort was there. If both teams played that exact same way 10 times Oakland probably wins at least 8. Really deserved to win that game. Late defensive letdown and one of the few things I blame Hue for this season: going for a low-percentage bomb on 3rd down when a 5-yard completion would’ve sealed the win.
- @KC: Win.
- SD: Chargers, surprisingly came with their ‘A’ game. Raiders came out fired up, but defense doesn’t force a single punt all game including when we had them pinned inside their 1 with a chance to get a stop and take the lead late in the 4th quarter.
People like to say we almost finished teh season 0-5, but really we were a handful of plays away from closing the reg season on a three-game winning streak. That’s the NFL for you.
January 3rd, 2012 at 11:07 am
I suppose we could interview McKenzie, have a handshake agreement, then proceed to fill out the staff with his recommendations or preferences.
January 3rd, 2012 at 11:07 am
Take the Packers, they have had years between super bowls, but always bounced back, hired new coaching staffs, musical chairs with co-ordinators and position coaches, and come back to the playoffs, then had down times, hired new coaches, etc, back to the playoffs. The one constant thru all that is the personnel department. Continuity for continuity’s sake isn’t the idea. It’s recognizing when you have front office talent, and keeping that continuity.
Remember when Al wanted to trade Moss to the Packers for Aaron Rodgers? Al knows talent too. Even in his decrepit years. The Packers think-tank knew talent too and rejected the trade. Thing is, Al made mistakes not drafting these guys when he had the chance, and looking to hawk back underwhelming 1st rounders from other teams. He was so often a hit in the past with this, but more of a miss in his latter years.

January 3rd, 2012 at 11:12 am
Hue LOST THE TEAM with the way he botched the Jason Campbell situation. Hue is not a leader of men. The players saw how fast Campbell went from team leader and Hue’s “guy” to EXPENDABLE. You can’t preach family and brotherhood then cap your team leader because he broke his collar bone and not expect a little fallout from the guys that are close with Campbell. That move had to be handled delicately to insure not losing the team and above all it had to work. A veteran Head Coach would have known that.

I agree with a lot if what you say, but the thought that allowing hue to run the team is okay with you is very disturbing for me. How can you be okay with our team being place in the hands of a guy that barely has his feet wet in the coaching arena and has zero background in play-personnel work? If the choice was between hue and al I would pick hue because al sucked, but we now have a chance to hire a qualified gm and you would be okay with just winging it with hue because he had an okay frat year?
If hue us put in complete control what is in place to stOp him from trading our entire 2013 draft class for some vet? Of course a real gm might not succeed, but I would bet on mckenzie before hue every single time.

I for one like the fakes, the reverses, the going for it on 4th downs (Browns game was lone exception).
I want HueJax to stay brash and keep his swagger. Don’t want some Dean Wormer type GM like Polian coming in and looking over Hue’s shoulder while he’s doing his thing.
Regarding Polian, I know he’s got a very good track record with building up the 90s Bills, mid-90s Panthers, and of course the Colts (present 2-14 team and a string of awful draft picks aside) … but I could never get behind that guy for how he pulled the plug on the Colts’ chance for a perfect season a few years ago. That was a disgrace and something Al Davis never would’ve stood for.

I have no problem with Hue asking to participate on everything related to football operations, shows he cares and wants to do everything to win.
I also have no problem with the fake punts, fgs, and throwing bombs on 3rd & 1. These are the Raiders, maverick, outside the box organization. If you want offensive playcalling by the book the watch the team froom across the bay: vanilla offense with an atomic Defense.
January 3rd, 2012 at 11:23 am
So, if the new gm is forced to keep hue, then does that mean hue gets an automatic contract extension too? Because normally players do not respond well to lame-duck coaches. You think the players looked disinterested with hue this year wait until next year lol.
January 3rd, 2012 at 11:24 am
I would also allow Hue to run the team in 2012.
We don’t have a ton of draft picks or key free agents anyway.
Wouldn’t be opposed to bringing in a GM and I believe that’s what we’ll do. But I will take retaining Hue Jackson as head coach over hiring some new unproven GM if that were the decision.

Let’s focus on next season, a new GM won’t have many draft picks to use in 2012 or much cap room to work with, I doubt a new guy will make the team much better next season, Hue is the man for the job.
See, this is Hue’s team right now, let him try his way, he’s asking for it and he might just get it, then he has to suceed or he’ll be gone and then we can move forward and empower a new GM to run this thing.
But I would definitely give Hue another shot before we let him go and I think he’ll succeed.

That also translates into Hue saying, “who the hell do john madden and ron wolf think they are? what have they ever done, i have just completed my 1st yr as HC and know how to fix everything (like he kept spruiking every week), so if mark and amy wont give me the vote of confidence over whatever john and ron think then im taking my ball (carson) with me and going home.”
This at the same time as him admitting he had training wheels on, admitted he wore too many hats….and at the same time as him insisting he IS going to have more power, more hats etc.
Hue is all over the place mentally. convinces himself with his own babble, but doesnt see that others can see he is all over the place mentally. like the QB carousel last season with JC and Gradkowksi. Like Hue saying about JC just recently….no it’s not a competition between JC and CP, its about playing the best man” ie, CP is his man regardless. talk about scholarships.
Hue’s mind is all over the place, no wonder the players and other coaches struggled under him.
Btw, notice that no other coaches have jumped to the support of Hue in any interviews? That says a lot. Not even Chuck has resorted to replying even after everything Hue trashed him with.
January 3rd, 2012 at 11:33 am
Bob,
Focus on next year? Hue has already taken a chunk out of the 2013 draft! What will be left once everyone realizes great coaches almost always fail at trying to be gm and hc and that unqualified hue Jackson is no exception? We cant afford to hope hue can do it. The future is now for bringing this franchise into the 21st century.
January 3rd, 2012 at 11:35 am
To borrow a phrase from Hue “Trust me”. McKenzie and Wolf will turn this franchise into perennial winners.
January 3rd, 2012 at 11:35 am
lookie…
huejack has one year left on his contract. he’s a lame duck without prior renewal.
it’s being set up in the new gm’s favor. it’s all hue’s game to win. he can save face and play the game, or flame out and fade away. he get’s a reprieve for one year only.
January 3rd, 2012 at 11:36 am
the fly in the ointment could be if hue makes a power play hisself…which is how it is starting to look. then hands may be forced into alternatives.
January 3rd, 2012 at 11:37 am
My best guess?
The GM will come in and help rebuild the defensive staff.
He’ll help restructure some salaries and make some FA signings.
He’ll let Hue run the offense, giving him a sink or swim season.
If Hue succeeds, then fine. If he doesn’t? The Raiders will have a 1st round pick to use on a franchise player, as well as some key expiring contracts that will allow them to remake the roster entirely.

9-7 won the West.

GG post #64, you nailed it bro. He is all over the map. I really don’t like what i hear coming out of his mouth. There is something very unsettling about Hue.
He’s always been known as this type of character. In his previous stints at Cincy and Baltimore, he had a reputation for running around telling everyone how great he was. The rumor is they were not sorry to see him go both times.
At first in Oakland, he wasn’t too over-the-top. Some occasional blather about bullying and all, but otherwise not crazy. Then everything changed when Al died. It was like he suddenly had this “huege” sense of entitlement, that he now owned the team and was calling all the shots. It’s like he knows there is something in Al’s will that gives him grand authority over all things Raiders now.
This team doesn’t need an Al Davis reincarnate. I would rather the team just part ways with him. I don’t like him as a person, and I haven’t seen anything to make me think he’s head coach material. I don’t think they will dismiss him, but it’s where I am with it.

I’m not sure you were able due to family and schedule to have summer internships with a company with seasoned professionals to give you guidance and experience in the finance field.
Don’t get desperate for Acct positions or Sales (yuck) continue on your dream path to manage money.
I would look for small venture capital companys, equity Wealth managers who manage money or prive money managers to get the experience you need as well as a decent salary.
I would suggest, insurance companys who have in house money management, usually in Bonds and leases, as well as derivatives as their speciality.
The school part is easy (you probably think I’m crazy for saying that) finding a job, after graduating is the most challenging.
I know you want to head back to Jordan in the future, and may have your own plans laid out, just suggested some areas, I know are hiring in these tough economic times.

And who knows?.
Maybe Hue can get Eric De Costa after all or George Kokinis or Vincent (not Ozzy) Newsome from Baltimore to be GM or maybe get Joe Hortiz or Chad Alexander from their scouting-personnel departments…all of them would be getting a promotio as either GM or Directors of player personnel.

First of all we need to keep perspective. For most first year head coaches finishing 8-8 is considered a very good start. Considering what Hue had to deal with finishing 8-8 should be considered a fantastic job.
Davis passed away, and it isnt like an owner that just signed the checks was suddenly gone. Davis did the work of ten men, and suddenly Hue had to take on a much larger role, and in season. He brought us Curry, a deal that i like a lot, and palmer and tj. The palmer and tj deals are proof to me that he doesn’t need to make all of the personnel moves.
He lost his most important player and team leader jason campbell, and had to scramble to replace him. Palmer the logical choice under achieved, was unable to macth the standard that JC installed. He has proven that he isnt the guy from 2005, but merely a turn over prone qb, that will make a spectacular throw only to follow it up with bad reads and misfires that fall into the defenders laps. I counted at least 3 passes that bounced of defenders hands in the first half in this last game. To keep the team together and squeeze 3 wins from the palmer led raiders was a miracle.
We have one of the worst defenses in the nfl, and it was exposed time and time again. this leaky defense was made even worse with the turnovers and numerous drive stalls.
The fact that Hue Jack was able to get 8 wins in his rookie campaign while changing job duties, and plugging in players to replace Jc dmac and the rest shows that this guy can coach.
All he needs is support. A Gm that shares his vision and can allow him to focus on coaching. The GM can focus on overhauling the defense.
I say we have some interesting trade bait in carson palmer, I am convinced, that we can pick up some solid players or draft picks.

How many Head Coaches can field a historically bad Defense and still win 8 games and come up a game short of the playoffs…. while picking up a QB from his couch in the middle of the season and losing your best player and only difference-maker for the last 9 weeks?.
– The Raiders had franchise worsts in touchdown passes allowed (31), yards per carry (5.1), yards passing (4,262) and total yards (6,201), while giving up the third-most points (433) in team history.
In the process, Oakland joined this year’s Tampa Bay team as two of the four teams ever to allow at least 30 TD passes and 5 yards per carry, a distinction previously held by only the 1950 Baltimore Colts and 1952 Dallas Texans.
Can’t blame Hue for that, give him or let him chose a Defensive Coordinator and we’ll see how he does.

Basically there are two arguments here: injuries and the defense. Every team has injuries. SD beat us with Curtis Freaking Brinkley. Who was an UNDRAFTED FOURTH string back. Their best defensive player got ejected and they still won. Excuses. Then somehow and I don’t understand how, but the Head Coach is excused by the defensive and special teams lapses. Even tho we had defensive and special teams lapses all year. And again one of the most telling signs was when Carson Palmer said, I wish he was in the quarterback meetings. Well, he wasn’t meeting with Palmer and the Q’s, the defense fell apart faster than MR’s errr, Alex7’s arguments and Jon Condo was coaching the special teams units. What was Jackson doing while the team fell apart down the stretch. Oh right, he was getting his nails done.
January 3rd, 2012 at 12:16 pm
The defense was TERRIBLE as soon as Chuck B was hired and we all saw how bad and confused they were in the preseason games!
Keeping Marshall would have kept defensive continuity from an improved group from last year.
Al Davis getting rid of Marshall as the DC was just a bad move. You don’t get rid of a solid coach, unless you know damn well you can replace him with someone way better.
Terrible….just terrible.
Chuck B worked his way back to the UFL after this crappy season from his defense.

Fisher going to Rams, or Indy. I doubt Fisher will go to Miami because he doesn’t have a QB and he won’t want to deal with the Pats and Jets every year.
Spagnolo probably going to Philly due to his east coast roots and him being mentored by the great DC Jim Johnson.

Again.
– The Raiders had franchise worsts in touchdown passes allowed (31), yards per carry (5.1), yards passing (4,262) and total yards (6,201), while giving up the third-most points (433) in team history.
Now what about this:
- In the process, —— Oakland joined this year’s Tampa Bay team as two of the four teams ever to allow at least 30 TD passes and 5 yards per carry—–, a distinction previously held by only the 1950 Baltimore Colts and 1952 Dallas Texans.
So, what was Tampa Bay’s record?.
4-12, with an up and coming (seemingly) Coach, a highky regarded young QB and O-Line, as well as some decent playmakers in Legarrete Blount and Mike Williams.
The Raiders on the other hand came this close to getting in the playoffs.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/01/03/hue-jackson-wants-to-be-involved-in-g-m-search/
quote…
It’s my opinion that finding the right general manager is a far more important hire than finding the right head coach. The G.M. needs the flexibility to set the course for all aspects of the franchise.
Finding a personnel guy that meshes well with Jackson would be a nice bonus, but it shouldn’t be a prerequisite.

Hue is reponsible for the defense….he isn’t responsible for hiring Chuck B though and he isn’t responsible for calling the plays on the defensive side also.
If that was the case, Huey should have just fired Chuck B along time ago and took over calling defensive plays and overall strategy on the defensive side, becuase the play of the defense could not have got any worse….especially in crunch time.

You can not make it to the Superbowl by firing a head coach EVERY SINGLE YEAR!
What part of that do some of you guys not understand?
What was Gruden’s record his first two years? 8-8! And I’m sure if we go back and watch every game from those two seasons we would be complaining and btching about things he did as well. Obviously he didn’t do something right because we only went 8-8 those two years right?
Oh but wait, PLAYERS win games, coaches just coach. Well look at who we had to patch together this season with all of the injuries on both offense and defense!
So since the Raiders didn’t make the playoffs under Gruden for two straight years, should he have been fired? Well then we wouldn’t have had our glory run from 2000-2003 that we still talk about to this day.
Some of you guys are straight clueless!
January 3rd, 2012 at 12:32 pm
I think Gregg Williams would be a terrible choice as Head Coach.
He is not head coach material. Maaaaaaaybe Zimmer.
================
To be fair, the same thing was said about guys like Belichick and Coughlin at one point. He’s a motivator – his players believe in him and in his system – and personally, I think it would be interesting to finally see a defensive-minded head coach in Oakland.
Still, I think Hue will be the best man for the job in 2012. After 2012, it’s anybody’s guess. Regardless, it comes down to the GM hire.

Man, this seasons defense had to be the worst Raider defense I have seen in a long time.
Chuck B couldn’t make quick adjustments to save his life and job.
I mean man, if you are going to go down, at least go down swinging and blitzing Rivers up the middle and to right to flush him to his left.
Bring the house and cover the hot read for crying out loud!
He was to chicken crap to even do that. Sad….
January 3rd, 2012 at 12:36 pm
Routt should be fined and suspended for his penalties this year, his salary needs to be re-structured, if AL were still alive, he would pull a Lane Kiffin on his @ss.
BTW, is that guy Jerry Angelo any good? I know he didnt do anything about replacing Caleb Haney, which probably means had he been our GM, we would have been stuck with Kyle Boller all year. I definitely DO NOT want him. I do not want Polian either, something about him rubs me the wrong way. Millen should be the last person considered for the position on the earth. McKenzie..I dont know, one this is for sure, whoever it is, except for maybe Millen, would be 1000 times more qualified than Hue. I want action taken soon. Quit with this waiting till March crap, Al, bless his heart, is no longer around. It is OK to make moves now.

I have tracked at least 12 passes that palmer threw directly to the defense that were dropped. This includes 3 bone headed passes in the first half of the last game that fell to the ground after the defense dropped them. By my count palmer would be near 25 picks in only 8 starts.
i told everyone that dropped ints should be counted because they will eventually bite you. One or two highlight throws measured against a gaggle of bone headed throws isnt very impressive to me.
I would rather have the qb that doesnt turn the ball over. the turn overs are one of the main reasons palmer only won 3 games

3. A sieve of a defense.
We all know that is because no top-tier GM or coach would come here to just have Al pull the strings. That is no longer a concern. Now, go out and get the best possible person to finish building this team.

Think about this:
There was one other team fielding a Defense as bad as ours, the Tampa Bay Bucs.
- “Oakland joined this year’s Tampa Bay team as two of the four teams ever to allow at least 30 TD passes and 5 yards per carry—–, a distinction previously held by only the 1950 Baltimore Colts and 1952 Dallas Texans”.
So, what was Tampa Bay’s record?.
4-12 and they didn’t lose their starting QB and RB before mid-season.
The Raiders on the other hand (with a defense nearly as bad, I think we were a bit better, more sacks) came this close to getting in the playoffs.
Hue Jackson overcame a Defense so bad it made history, as well as a ton of huge injuries on offense to nearly sneak into the playoffs.
Fired he must be, some say.

=================================================
Everyone is focused on the defense. Sure. But, our scoring offense: Down from last year. Penalties. Up from last year. Offense in general: about the same as last year. And this year we didn’t have Gradkowski. We had Carson Palmer. We didn’t have Mario Henderson. We had Jared Veldheer. We didn’t have sucky DHB who couldn’t catch, we had a decent DHB. We Marcel Reece playing well, not Luke Lawton. So actually we got worse with better players. Something is wrong there. Really wrong.

ArmChair GM Says:
Why did the Raiders go 8-8 for two straight seasons under Gruden?
I’ll wait. Please bring on the excuses.
—————————–
I have repeatedly stated that I’m not convinced Gruden was that great of a coach. He looked dam good only after Gannon arrived.
And then he went on to win a Super Bowl with Tony Dungy’s team and intimate knowledge of every play the Raiders would run on offense.
He followed that with six more miserable seasons in Tampa Bay before finally getting fired in the middle of his contract.
So the Gruden 8-8 seasons cannot be used to excuse Hue. Sorry.

It is official….Norvell will keep his job, He should thank Hue and Chump B for that…
Along the long list the Raiders accomplished on Sunday, sending Teblow to playoffs, yada yada yada, they also managed to keep Norv as coach…that might be the only good thing to come out of that game.
January 3rd, 2012 at 12:43 pm
Man, this seasons defense had to be the worst Raider defense I have seen in a long time.
Chuck B couldn’t make quick adjustments to save his life and job.
I mean man, if you are going to go down, at least go down swinging and blitzing Rivers up the middle and to his right to flush him to his left.
Bring the house and cover the hot reads for crying out loud!
He was to chicken crap to even do that. Sad!
January 3rd, 2012 at 12:43 pm
I think if we’re going to stick with the 4-3, then Del Rio would be the best, most logical option as DC.
Makes sense for him because …
1) He’s not getting a HC job right now, but if he steps in and does a nice job with our defense for a year or two he’ll be back on the hot list of HC candidates.
2) He has ties to the area and I believe said he was a Raiders fan growing up.
3) He would presumably have a lot of control of the defense with an offensive-minded HC like Hue.
4) It is possible much of the talent needed to make thsi a good unit is here. I think the struggles this year were more the result of scheme and players not doing their jobs. A good DC who knows what he’s doing and gets these guys to be accountable would go a long way.

Mistic1 give it up man all your soap box posturing for Campbell will not work.
Hue said yesterday in his presser that he is tied to Palmer’s hip.
Something you argued with me all day about one fine day in here. The proof is in the pudding I was right you were wrong.
Now Campbell is thinking about staying on as a backup and that’s cool because it will keep you active next year but it also shows there are no teams out there that are willing to give him a starting job.
Face it your guy is now a backup in this league.
January 3rd, 2012 at 12:48 pm
unlike the hype being tiossed around in here, jarvis moss was interviewed after the game and the man was in tears. A grown man crying because they were eliminated. He was especially sensitive about the fact that the crowd was chanting “denver lost” and they still couldnt get it done.
Hu has not lost the team in any way and players are humiliated and disappointed by there performance.
I think Hue did a great job when there were several reasons for the team to fail, and many chances fro them to mail it in the way they have in years past.
January 3rd, 2012 at 12:49 pm
Yeah Al screwed Hue with the Bresnahan hire.
But, we wanted to interview Dennis Thurman for the job.
“It was late January when Rex Ryan called secondary coach Dennis Thurman into his office.
The Oakland Raiders had asked to interview Thurman for their vacant defensive coordinator job, and Ryan explained to Thurman the Jets had denied permission.
“He wasn’t prepared to lose me,” Thurman said.
“I wasn’t overly emotional about it, because I look at it like this: it’s something I didn’t have. Would it have been a good opportunity? Yeah……But at the same time, I have a great job here. We’re trying to do something as a team, that’s obviously trying to take that next step and get to the Super Bowl.”
Thurman, one of Ryan’s most-trusted assistants, had another year on his contract, which is why the Jets could block the interview. This is Thurman’s 10th season coaching alongside Rex Ryan, dating back to 2002 in Baltimore.
During those years with the Ravens, Thurman saw Ryan be blocked from coordinator interviews before being promoted from defensive line coach to Baltimore’s defensive coordinator in 2005.
“What are you going to do? Are you going to sit there and argue with him and get into some debate?” Thurman said. “Here is a man who obviously had it done to him a number of times, and you just have to move on.”
New Raiders coach Hue Jackson, who coached with Thurman at USC in the late 90s, admitted this week he was “a little surprised” at the Jets’ decision, since Thurman has aspirations of being a coordinator.
But Ryan said his responsibility is to the Jets organization and he does not have an “open-door policy” for his best assistants to be poached.”

We win division games because of HUE.
We were in position to with The West because of HUE.
Dmac and DHB became relevant because of HUE.
We now have a legit QB because of HUE.
Remember 7 years of 11 losses or more? hue wasn’t around for that!
Our D sucked because of AL.
Penalties have always been an issue because of AL.
We can now hire a real GM and D coordinator because of AL.
Give my boy HueJax a average Defense, an offseason for Palmer and the Offense. Get rid of a few overpaid fat contracts. Make sure Hue is focused on “Playcalling” and we win The West next year in week 14!
In HUE trust!

Dell,
I know exactly what you mean, but it’s not a good situation. The reward (profits) do not justify the risk and costs ( moving my entire family including my mother, and working with family who I have not seen in 5 years). Not the best situation at this point, but maybe later. I keep my doors open.
Remember Dell, my ideal situation is to get enough exp and certificates from here to get my dream Job in Jordan. I will get paid more than I would here ( if I work for an American or euro company), and cost of living is much less than here. Also less regs and exp there, which makes the situation even more attractive.

Raiders coach Hue Jackson would welcome impending free agent Jason Campbell back next season.
CSN Bay Area’s Paul Gutierrez is skeptical, in large because Campbell became a “polarizing force” to the wide receivers who felt the team leader was disrespected by Jackson’s “greatest trade in football” bravado on Carson Palmer. Jacoby Ford, in particular, seemed to have communication issues with Palmer. Campbell can find a better opportunity elsewhere.

Wow. Norv. What can you say? The new Rasputin.
GRIGORI RASPUTIN
… On June 29, 1914, after either just receiving a telegram or exiting church, Rasputin was attacked suddenly by Khionia Guseva, a former prostitute who had become a disciple of the monk Iliodor. … Guseva thrust a knife into Rasputin’s abdomen, and his entrails hung out of what seemed like a mortal wound. Convinced of her success, Guseva supposedly screamed, “I have killed the antichrist!”
After intensive surgery, however, Rasputin recovered. It was said of his survival that “the soul of this cursed muzhik was sewn on his body.”
The murder of Rasputin has become a legend … On December 16, 1916, having decided that Rasputin’s influence over the Tsaritsa had made him a threat to the empire[citation needed], a group of nobles led by Prince Felix Yusupov and the Grand Duke Dmitri Pavlovich and the right-wing politician Vladimir Purishkevich apparently lured Rasputin to the Yusupovs’ Moika Palace[20] by intimating that Yusupov’s wife, Princess Irina, would be present and receiving friends (in point of fact, she was away in the Crimea).[21] The group led him down to the cellar, where they served him cakes and red wine laced with a massive amount of cyanide. According to legend, Rasputin was unaffected, although Vasily Maklakov had supplied enough poison to kill five men. Conversely, Maria’s account asserts that, if her father did eat or drink poison, it was not in the cakes or wine, because after the attack by Guseva he suffered from hyperacidity and avoided anything with sugar. In fact, she expresses doubt that he was poisoned at all. It has been suggested, on the other hand, that Rasputin had developed an immunity to poison due to mithridatism.[22]
Determined to finish the job, Prince Yusupov became anxious about the possibility that Rasputin might live until the morning, leaving the conspirators no time to conceal his body. Yusupov ran upstairs to consult the others and then came back down to shoot Rasputin through the back with a revolver. Rasputin fell, and the company left the palace for a while. Yusupov, who had left without a coat, decided to return to get one, and while at the palace, he went to check on the body. Suddenly, Rasputin opened his eyes and lunged at Yusupov. He grabbed Yusupov and attempted to strangle him. At that moment, however, the other conspirators arrived and fired at Rasputin. After being hit three times in the back, he fell once more. As they neared his body, the party found that, remarkably, he was still alive, struggling to get up. They clubbed him into submission. After binding his body and wrapping him in a carpet, they threw him into the icy Neva River. He broke out of his bonds and the carpet wrapping him, but drowned in the river.
Three days later, Rasputin’s body, poisoned, shot four times, badly beaten, and drowned, was recovered from the river. An autopsy established that the cause of death was drowning. It was found that he had indeed been poisoned, and that the poison alone should have been enough to kill him. There is a report that after his body was recovered, water was found in the lungs, supporting the idea that he was still alive before submersion into the partially frozen river.[26]
Subsequently, the Tsaritsa Alexandra buried Rasputin’s body in the grounds of Tsarskoye Selo, but after the February Revolution, a group of workers from Saint Petersburg uncovered the remains, carried them into the nearby woods, and burned them. As the body was being burned, Rasputin appeared to sit up in the fire. His apparent attempts to move and get up thoroughly horrified bystanders. …”

They need to plug Wimbley as the full time RDE if they stick to a 4-3, and just have him concentrate on getting to the QB and causing disruption in the backfield.
Then they need to sign a vet FA SAM who can play and push Ro Mac.
They also need to sign a vet WILL OLB who will push Curry.

The bottom line is we were 4-2 ready to push fro the division lead, then we lost our qb and the season went with him. This is common ion the nfl, when you lose the most important player and team leader.
We crawled to the finish and were lucky to pick up another few wins. All those people that want to ignore the mind numbing turnovers can do so, but dont comlain next year when they continue.
Is there any evidence from the last several years that palmer will suddenly learn not to turn over the football? His picks are terrible and have killed are season along with the terrible defense.
Palmer is lucky not to have 25 picks in eight starts!!! turn a blind eye to it if you must, but i will continue to remind everyone of his failings until he can correct it.
THE PALMER TRADE WAS A FLOP

“Thurman, one of Ryan’s most-trusted assistants, had another year on his contract, which is why the Jets could block the interview.”
That was from last January, so did he renew his contract or is he a “Free Agent”…?.
It would be shocking if he did renew knowing the Raiders wanted to give him the DC position last year, hopefully he and Hue had an understanding that he’d be hired for next season.

vcontreras@sacbee.com The Sacramento Bee
By Victor Contreras
What would Al have done about Raiders?
Would Al Davis, the deceased owner of the Raiders, fire coach Hue Jackson after his team finished the once-promising season 8-8 and missed the playoffs?
Davis didn’t hesitate to fire Tom Cable after the Raiders were 8-8 in 2010. And Cable’s Raiders played better at the end of the season than Jackson’s team.
Under Cable in 2010, the Raiders were 5-6 before finishing 3-2 while beating three division opponents to complete a 6-0 sweep of the AFC West.
Despite Cable’s ability to get his players to keep charging down the stretch, Cable was fired.
Under Jackson, the Raiders started 7-4 and were in control of the AFC West. But in the final five games, the Raiders went 1-4 while scoring an average of 19.8 points and allowing 31.8. The Denver Broncos won the division, despite losing their final three games.
When the 2010 season ended, Cable was proud of his team for not giving up, and he accepted the blame.
After the Raiders lost to San Diego on Sunday, Jackson threw his team under the bus. He blamed them for not playing harder with the playoffs on the line, saying he was “angry” at his players, and he pointed his finger at defensive coordinator Chuck Bresnahan.
Jackson blamed everybody but the man in the mirror, but the Raiders weren’t ready to play Sunday because Jackson didn’t have them ready.
The Raiders enter their first offseason without Davis, who fired eight head coaches after the Raiders returned to Oakland in 1995.
Mark Davis, Al’s son, and team CEO Amy Trask will decide Jackson’s fate. Will they wonder what Al would have done?

Agreed.
How does Breshahan get a pass?
Al hired him because no one else would take the job and because he could tell him what to do.
At the time, Breshahan wasn’t even working in the NFL and that should happen again.

untrue,
palmer was unable to throw the defense out of the 8 man box, this is why we saw bush’s production drop so dramatically.
Teams figured out that they could load the box and bring pressure and force palmer to win with his arm. Palmer threw so many picks in these situations that teams saw no need to change. palmers picks are just as guilty as the defense if not more so.
when you have a bad defense protecting the ball is paramount, but palmer never grasped it. We won despite his turnovers vs kc and sd, but more often than not it hurt us.

I’m not going to get into the Palmer argument. But blaming Bush is asinine. This is a passing league. The top three teams in the league – GB, NE and NO – don’t have much in the way of rushing threats either. They move the ball downfield through the air.
NE’s Green-Ellis longest run was 18 yards. GB’s Grant longest was 47 yards – against the Raiders. That was twice his second longest run of the season. Bush had average yards per carry similar to those guys. NO’s Sproles longest was 36 yards. Bush had a 44 yard run.
If this team moved toward a pass first concept, Bush would be a perfectly serviceable RB. And he seems to stay healthy more than DMac does.

sorry but this isnt true. We have been known as a run first team for the last few years, and it wasnt a problem when we were 4-2. The problem showed up when the new qb was unable to beat the loaded box and pressure he faced in the pass rush. Take the first sd game, palmer hit a couple of deep passes and bush ran wild. Once teams figured out that palmer was just as likley to turn the ball over as he was to hit a receiver, they decided to load the box and force palmer to win it.
he failed miserably

this is what teams have been doing, focusing on stopping our run game. The offense made teams pay last year in a few games and early this year, forcing defenses to play a more balanced defense. When jc went down and palmer started his hurricane of interceptions, teams played mainly 8 man fronts on first down, and brought heat on passing downs.

Bush averaged more than 4 yards per carry just once in the last seven games (4.3 against Detroit).
He will be 28 years old when the 2012 season starts. I’d like to have him back, and we need a good set of backup RBs with McFadden’s injury history. But, especially considering the supply of quality backs available at the minimum salary, I wouldn’t bother franchising Bush or offering him more than a deal in the $3-4 million per year range.

Too bad JC was under valued because we are stuck with a lemon.
Regardless of what happens to jC Palmer isnt the answer. So many people are upset because they wanted him to be some elite qb, but it just isnt the case.

Why is Mistic so damn annoying? JC this…JC that. The dude got hurt. Out for the season (wasnt it supposed to be 6-8 weeks Mistic?).
Top 5 Reasons CP > JC
1. Can make throws JC cannot and does not have the balls to make.
2. No WTF fumbles…no deer in the headlights look
3. Shorter release time (need to research sack stats)
4. Was able to compile a better QB rating than JC coming off the couch and thrown DIRECTLY in the fire
5. Brought a confidence/swag JC just did not give off
Thank you for all youve done JC…hopefully you will stay on as THE top backup in the league…

Campbell is a victim of his own mediocrity.
Even if another QB may not be as good, teams will hope the grass is greener with a younger guy.

Hue Jackson was right though he needed to use other means. Until AD’s death, everyone complained about AD’s defense, AD’s scholarship players etc. Unfortunately, Chuck Bres was not capable of taking AD’s players and developing another scheme that was successful. Let’s face it , we lost our DC when Al Davis died. Slid to 29th in defense. Need to hire an OC, and let Hue do what he does bes, run the offense. Few teams would have been as good on offense with the loss of all the skill players that Jackson has to deal with.

Typical Oakland Raiders journalist, “DHB is the 3rd or 4th receiver in the depth chart, changing the tune from 6th. Okay, first of all, it was 13 INTs in 9 starts.
3 of the 16 you love to cite came against KC when he was thrown into the fire because Kyle Boller had one of the great meltdowns in QB history and was basically forced to go out there and try to play sandlot football.
Even you have to admit the pick yesterday only happened because Jacoby Ford fell down. That’s down to 12 INTs in 9 starts. Balance that against 16 TDs. Pretty good for a guy who didn’t get up off his couch until late October.
January 3rd, 2012 at 2:55 pm
450. Undecided on McClain. The whole arrest thing was a massive distraction and suc-ked and he was hobbled by a bad ankle alot of the time that he played on.
Have to say, Bres did not cater to his defenses strength. He simply called the smae lame game over and over and over and then blamed the players for not executing.

The injuries don’t explain how they could move the ball well downfield to the red zone then stall out. And going for it on 4th down in the first quarter rather than kicking a FG is another way you miss out on points. You’re so full of crap.
And Steve Corkran – yet again today – says Hue deserves a second season to prove himself. Scroll up and do the replay. You’re making sh!t up about this bias. All in your head. You either have an active imagination or are a flat out liar.
And Jerry Mac said on multiple occasions that he is not a fan of the Oakland Raiders.
You clearly don’t follow any of this closely and just drop in here from time to time looking to argue about your imagined issues.
January 3rd, 2012 at 3:01 pm
Look the bottom line is this. We have Carson Palmer. He is a top notch calibur passer. He throws a lot of picks because he pushes the ball down the field. He also makes much more explosive plays because of this risk taking style.
Campbell was much more steady, less turnovers. But his best plays over the past 2 years came off of screen passes and dump offs. nothing over 15 yards it seems. Campbell relies on the run game to set up the pass. Whereas Palmer can put the team on his shoulders, and throw the ball all over the yard when protected and healthy.
Campbell is a great guy and great for the locker room, by all indications, but he cant win a championship for you.
With DMC healthy and any semblance of a defense, Palmer has this team as a playoff favorite and probably 11-5. Even with all the INTs. Campbell is just too limited in ability for that to ever be the case.
My biggest problem with Palmer is that I wish he didnt cost us so much for the future. Had we waited until the offseason to get him, he would have cost us much less, like a 3rd rounder. But we also wouldnt have been in any kind of playoff race and would be in the top 10 pick range, with Boller under center. How are we going to get better on defense when we have so few picks?
These are my thoughts on the Palmer/Campbell issues and the dilemna it has created for our beloved team. Would it have been worth it to throw this season away and wait to get Palmer and still have these picks knowing we have lots of talent for th future? Maybe so…
January 3rd, 2012 at 3:01 pm
Carson Palmer’s 80.5 rating is the greatest performance ever! Those 16 INTS don’t count because he was not at his best without all his weapons . If only he had his weapons he would have thrown only 10 INTS in 8 games . Glad we gave up the future for this gunslinger. Hue great play calling as well !
January 3rd, 2012 at 3:02 pm
So Mistic is furious over the Carson Palmer dealing, and clearly a tad frustrated with his former BFF Hue Jackson making the move.
Maybe next time you won’t mock a quality backup QB like Bruce Gradkwoski. If Gradkowski were still here, we might have tried to stay the course with him for this year, and bring back Soup next year.
Serves you fkn right for being only a fan of certain players.

Hue’s false statements to date:
We’re going to build a bully
I know what needs to be fixed and I will fix it
We’re going to win the AFC west
The best players will play
Players will be held accountable
Who can trust anything this guy says? He’s all about what’s best for Hue Jackson, NOT what’s best for the team. The way he separates himself from problem areas on HIS team is a telling trait.
He saw in the 2nd game of the season that the defense was in a shambles, and he chose to ride with it the rest of the season? How is that being accountable?
There is no way on Earth Hue should have more of a hand in anything to do with the team. He’s turning into a dumpster fire in Alameda.
He DID out-perform my expectations. When he was promoted, I told everyone I know that they’d be 7-9 this year.
So there’s that….

481… I don’t know, man… I was thinking just about the same way watching that presser. It’s hard to argue with anything the guy wrote.

I think Cork’s comments about Jacoby and others is a little too much! You get paid to win football games. I can’t believe the players were that upset about the way Campbell was treated. The worst thing was probably Saunders saying he had a REAL QB with Palmer. The goal is to eventually win the Super Bowl, not hope to make the playoffs. Alex Smith is as good or better than Jason Campbell. That is not what I want for my RAIDERS!

Yep… Everytime I thought Palmer might mount a comeback , the defense would allow another Td…… Our Defense couldn’t get off the field without allowing a TD

And one more comment about that sorry excuse of a defense: they blew or almost blew every game in the 4th qtr, with the exception of the first KC game and New England, where the game was already lost before the 4th qtr!

Fingers, one 3 and out at the 1 yard line and that place would have shook to an earthquake. We would have won that game, I tell you!

A Nation divided.
That’s what 8-8 does. One can say look at the 8 losses, the other look at wins. Plus, add a bunch of excuses and there Hue go.
One sides with HueSux and Palmer, the other side wants them both fired.
No matter what it’s said or written from either side, the Raiders are stuck with both for the next season.
Can’t predict anything, but I can say that HueSux will have it all his way. His histrionics of Sunday and then Monday made things very clear. He wants more control of the organization, and that’s a bottom line. Given by chance that a strong GM would be hired to control HueSux, that would only cause trouble. My guess is that Mark Davis and Amy Trask, plus the “council of elders,” would rather have an egomaniac running the Raiders.
The team does become the reflection of the coach. HueSux saw what the Raiders were like on the Buffalo game, and they were just like him, so he went on a 14-game denial. It was ALL on HueSux, until the end when it was ALL on everybody else.

One thing about Coach Jackson, at least he admits and stands up. He said he learned a lot as a first year head coach. It seems when we give someone a chance to be a the head coach, they go on some where else and succeed. He stood up some, lets give him a chance. But the defense has to be fixed. Hey Hue go hire some of Nick Saban’s defensive coaches or Les Miles at LSU. Lets get some new blood. And I like the choice of hiring a GM.

Everyone wants more control, hell look at our country.
Control has to be limited.

And that is why we need to fix the defense. To many TD’s costing us games. Get some new blood.
