ESPN: It’s McKenzie as GM

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, January 5th, 2012 at 11:21 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Reggie McKenzie will be hired as the new general manager for the Raiders, ESPN has reported.

McKenzie played for the Raiders from 1985-88, has worked his way up through the Green Bay Packers organization since 1994 and comes with the endorsement of former Packers and Raiders execs Ron Wolf and Ken Herock.

McKenzie confirmed his hiring to ESPNmilwaukee.com without making comment.

Multiple reports had McKenzie meeting with the Raiders Wednesday, and he has been reported as a person of interest since the death of owner Al Davis on Oct. 8. to bring stability to the front office.

    Long live McKenzie!

  7. GG Says:

ESPN’s article is wrong in one regard. Saying they are working on Reggie’s powers.

We can hire him and have him working immediately because the league rule on front office hirings from other teams is that they can be hired immediately if they get full control of roster and draft.

For us to officially hire him now means Reggie got full control. Thus, Hue’s contractual powers is the issue. Meaning we either let Hue go to grant Reggie full control, or are re-doing Hue’s contract that he reports directly to the GM.

Goin’ nuts nizzle, swanson flow Swayze!

  28. GG Says:

    More like…

Al Davis/Al Davis – Hue Jackson – Jason Campbell

Mark Davis – Hue Jackson/Hue Jackson – Carson Palmer

    Mark Davis – Reggie McKenzie – ?? – ??

  29. 504 Raider Says:

    Hell Yeahhhhh.

1st question to McKenzie at the presser:

It’s well documented that you can tell us who can and can’t play.

    Can McClain play?

  30. Sullivan44 Says:

HC should be allowed to hire his own DC. If McKenzie sticks with Hue, I’m pretty sure he’ll let Hue choose his own staff. And, if that happens, you have the profound change in organizational structure pointed out above, and a complete new defensive philosophy, something more modern and in tune with today’s game. We’re finally an NFL team again.

So, um, any props to the organization for that?

Season ended on a sour note, but to lose Owner/GM/Defensive Coordinator/Asst. Offensive Head Coach/Head of pro and college scouting/Chief Accountant/Face of franchise and still have a shot at the dance week 17 with that ridicuous defense?

Al did a lot of great things, and of course we don’t wish death on anyone. But face it, he’s been horrible as GM in recent years, and him no longer being GM is addition by subtraction.

  34. Raisingraider Says:

Hue may get to pick his own DC, but the GM better put his stamp of approval on it too, or else we could wind up with someone like we had in 011

  35. bioecon Says:

Awesome job. Kudos to all the former raiders for helping out. RIP Al Davis. Great job Mark Davis. Now i know what it means when they say the king is dead, long live the king.

Again thank you John madden, Ron wolf and whoever else.
    Finally superbowl time.

  36. MiamiRaider78 Says:

  37. GG Says:

Sullivan is a Niners fan and used an alias on the day of Al’s death to post here a whole bunch of celebratory posts that Al died and mocking Al, and saying now next in line to troll is Amy.

  38. Sullivan44 Says:

I still don’t think the NFL will let us win a SB. But now we’ll compete and knock on the door again. I don’t think it was just about Al. I don’t think they want “ghetto” Oakland to win it all. Same with Detroit. They like their jet set franchises winning the big one.

So, when Al fired Gruden, you grant yourself the right for 10 years of Al and Raider hate, becoming a Niners fan, trolling Raider Nation, wishing Al death, etc. Then when Al dies you actually do engage in dancing on his coffin under an alias. Then when the Raiders announce a regime change (mckenzie) now you apparently grant yourself the right to return as a Raider fan and start talking about “we”.

thats a great point. i look at this past seaon like the 99 year. it was the final year in a transition period towards our success. we werent ready to handle all of the hurdles last year. too many injuries, al’s death, incompetent coaches and players on d with a brash rookie HC.its sad to say but sometimes u have to go thru disappointment like this to understand u cant fugg off opportunities they just had. now there will be no excuses and we will be better prepared for the future. the rebirth of the raiders have begun. return of the dark side baby.

  57. Sullivan44 Says:

Like when Bill Callahan called out his team?

    Sometimes that crap can backfire.

Veteran, established coaches EARN the right to call out players.

    Hue hasn’t earned that right.

Some of you guys just don’t want to face the fact that Hue still has a long ways to go.

I’m not saying he can’t get there, but he needs to be rained in and mentored. Remember, he not only lost an owner when Al Davis passed, but he also lost the guy who was developing him as a coach.

  94. dbaz09 Says:

Mark and Amy need to continue moving in the right direction by cleaning up the disfunction in the front office and that should start with removing John Herrera. His confrontation with Kawakami, sophomoric comments about Gannon and generally juvenile behavior when dealing with the media were outright embarrassments. The legend of Al Davis should live-on without his court jester reminding us his sad final years.

How do you know they didn’t? You have no clue what goes on in the locker room.

Pack fans can be mad all they want but we had McKenzie first. He’s a former player coming back to his old team.

Same with Wolf. Shoulda never let him go to Green Bay. Look what he did with that franchise.

We get Eliot and we have the whole freaking family.

  101. John Tweedy Says:

I wonder if Biekert and Woodson will be retained?

  102. djohnnyg Says:

This news is a bit of healing salve to the disaster of last weekend.

Now, I may be able to enjoy the playoffs a bit.

Maybe I can talk myself into believing that losing to SD and not making it this year was somehow, someway, for the best…or not.

  103. Sullivan44 Says:

Everyone, pay close attention to the people posting negative comments tonight, trying to turn the conversation toward’s Hue and faults they have with him.

  104. djohnnyg Says:

In thinking long term of the ramifications of last Sunday is it possible if we made the playoffs that McKenzie gets snapped up before Mark has the chance?

  105. Sullivan44 Says:

    DJohnny,

Let’s face it. The Raiders with Wolf and the Raiders without Wolf were two complete different franchises. With Wolf we’re one of the best franchises in the league. Without him, we’re mediocre at best. Having at least a Wolf protege back in Oakland is probably the most we could do to revive the great Raider teams of the past.

  106. Sullivan44 Says:

    Mark Davis/Reggie McKenzie/Hue Jackson/Carson Palmer.

    3 months ago:

    Al Davis/Hue Jackson/Jason Campbell

Does anyone still not get it?

  107. djohnnyg Says:

Yeah. Hue sure as heck did alot of good stuff with the team we could talk about.

  108. djohnnyg Says:

Sulli, yes. I would take his eldest daughter and put her in as defensive coordinator if she’d take the gig.

  109. al d. davis Says:

Yessssss…….Congratulations Mark and Amy. Stank AL’s taint is receding; I can walk into the room without vomiting.

Next man up: Fire Hue Jackson, clean out the staff, and schlubs from the roster, and we’ll be ready to rock.

  113. al d. davis Says:

We must rid ourselves of that clown: did anyone here he was caught with Sandusky in the shower?? That was after he announced that DMAC was slated to practice on Wed.

  114. djohnnyg Says:

Yeah. Maybe even some ‘Pride and Poise’.

He’s like the stain on the nice new shirt.

  118. DaTruth91 Says:

I still don’t think the NFL will let us win a SB. But now we’ll compete and knock on the door again. I don’t think it was just about Al. I don’t think they want “ghetto” Oakland to win it all. Same with Detroit. They like their jet set franchises winning the big one.

    ————————————————————————————————————–

If that was the case then the Saints wouldn’t have one and possibly another this year. Plus the SB is down here next year.

New Orleans, LA. 2011 United States Murder Capitol.

I remember when we had the NBA All Star game here a few years ago and those tatoo’d up ballers were voicing their concerns about coming to play in it because they said it was not safe here.

Well for now, Telly Hankton and Michael “Mike Mike” Anderson are behind bars now. Google them. But their cousins and deciples are out roaming the streets.

  125. Alameda Lee Says:

I am guessing we will see Mark Davis speak for the first time announcing this hiring.Should be interesting.

Keeping the coach focused on preparing this team for Sundays. Welcome home Reggie.

We all love Al but his way wasn’t cuttn it,,and I said a week ago that we’ll find out who Mark really is come offseason. It’s just nice to know he’s not following all if his dads footsteps. Now we can right the Raider ship. I’ve said all year that instead of building a bully, we need to build a football team, and we’ve just laid the foundation last night. I’m predicting we’re gona wheel and deal by trading some players for draft picks (mid rnd probably). I think we’re about to have a garage sale on defense.

I don’t like Hue. But realistically, I don’t see Reggie firing him right away if Hue shows a willingness to cooperate and accept reduced power.

I imagine they’ll put him on a short leash, force him to focus on just being a head coach. Let Saunders be the playcaller. Bring in whoever for the defense.

LMAO! That almost sounded like a MR. T convo with Captain Murdoch on the A Team!

  207. Just Fire Baby Says:

    Seymour has ZERO trade value.

$15 million dollar salary, with $7.5 guaranteed.

I guess a team could trade for him and than restructure him, but all that would do would be lower his cap number and add more guaranteed money spread over a couple years.

He will be here next year, for one last go at it.

  208. boss01 Says:

What I would like to know is how much control will Reggie have…..does the HC report to him or to Mark…does he make all personnel decisions including the draft things like that. We all know GM’s have come and gone here, but everything went through AL’s desk. Will Mark be power hungry…we will soon find out.

  209. FreddieB Says:

I agree JFB, if we are looking to get draft picks we wont get very far offering up Seymore, Kelly, Routt and the like. We would have to offer up our talent and I dont know that I want to do that. Rock and a hard place.

  210. Just Fire Baby Says:

    FreddieB,

It’s not only about offering up talent, but cheap talent.

Obviously other teams would rather their teams have Seymour on 3rd and short than Desmond Bryant.

But when it comes to a trade, do you want Seymour with 1 year at $15 million, or Bryant at 400K?

Most teams would say, I won’t give you anything for Seymour, but I’ll give you a 6th for Bryant. Thus Bryant may have higher trade “value”.

That’s why I said Ford. Don’t think we should trade him, but he at least might be able to get us something of value.

It is a tough spot for McKenzie no doubt.

If it were me, I’d just try to pick up some more mid-round sleepers and see what comes of the young guys next season.

Other than a 1st or 2nd rounder, the Raiders have a full draft as of now for 2013, so it’s not like McKenzie would have to wait long.

  213. Pretty Rick Says:

Ford is too big a playmaker on returns to let him go. Maybe some team is naive enough to trade for Wimbley,

  214. Just Fire Baby Says:

Looking at the Green Bay model in the draft, they drafted a ton of TE’s, mostly front 7 D at the top of their drafts, and rarely take a RB.

Great job grabbing high-quality WR’s in middle rounds (Jennings, Driver, Nelson), which we have done fairly well lately as well.

Who cares who was hurt or wasn’t?

Raiders passed for over 400 yds against Diego.
Hardly any passing in the red zone.
they’d get to the 20, go to the run, kick a field goal.
    Freaking stupid.
Settling for field goals is unnecessary when they can’t stop our passing game.
Throwing deep on 3rd and 2 in the 4th against Detroit. Stupid.
I like Hue but he has made some stupid decisions that cost the season.
He has to be more consistent.
Our defense was an almost-defense but our offense could score.
How many times did Hue call pass to get down the field, only to revert to the run and blow red zone opportunity?
    Answer; all freaking season

Hopefully new GM hlds him accountable.

    We going places now Nation!!

  221. Carl Weathers Says:

I can’t see anything on this roster that hauls in anything higher than a 3rd. The best trades that can be made are player for player right now. Face it, our highest draft pick will be a compensatory pick!

  222. John David Booty Says:

Got this from a poster on ESPN. Awesome:

Reggie will help the Raiders find their FRANCHISE QB. While Reggie was in GB he was vital in getting Matt Hasselbeck, Aaron Rodgers, and Matt Flynn. Not to mention that before Reggie was with the PACK, he was the assistant head coach at Tennessee (College) and was responsible for recruiting Peyton Manning.

  223. Carl Weathers Says:

I hope this means that someone can finally put Chuck B out of his misery.

  224. weaselbit Says:

Palmer finally sees the opportunity to become the nfl qb he always wanted to be.
He’s going to work hard in the off season.
So when Hue calls stupid running plays in the red zone he can audible them out. hue cant say sh@t if they score.

Might’ve been able to win a shootout with SD if he hadn’t done so.

The Chargers defense had absolutely no answer for Palmer, DHB, Moore and Murphy in that game. Conversely, they were holding Bush to 3.5 yards a carry.

Consider that if they had won they would have went to the playoffs.

You have to hold EVERYONE accountable.

    Hue didn’t show genius.

Watching the 2nd half adjustments Belichek makes against opposing teams: genius. Patriots lose Defensive luster so Belicheck goes to relying on his passing offense to outscore opponents while the defense rebuilds. Coach has to make adjustments based on the teams strengths. there are nearly 18 free agents, so they could bring in some people to fit Trgovac or Moss (D-coordinator) choice…that way McKenzie has a head start in the draft getting people that fit what he already knows.

Whole lot of highly paid, but inconsistent personnel on the roster…a lot to clean up, but they have to get the “drama magnets” out.

That would be the boldest of moves. And would say that McKenzie has no faith in Hue as a HC. And that he believes he can replace Hue the play caller. Despite what the Hue-haters say, all of us are aware that Hue is one of the BEST in-game play callers in the game.

I hate the idea of giving that sort of advantage up.

I also hate the idea of tearing up our offensive system. Its too much instability for such a young offense. We’re not far away from elite on the offensive side of the ball. But if McKenzie feels that he wants to go another direction with HC (and offensive system by default) then it means you can pretty much toss our QB and WR’s in the can as well. I’ve never ever liked Routt, he’s just not a guy you can rely on. No idea why Al wanted him instead of Nnamdi. Kelly has just ALWAYS rubbed me the wrong way. Totally undisciplined. Always jumping offsides becasue all he cares about is sacks. You have to earn the right to rush the passer.

Don’t be shocked if Hue Jackson doesn’t last in Oakland

    Hue Jackson AP

There’s a strange dynamic unfolding right now in Oakland, which probably shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to anyone who has followed the NFL for the last decade. And there’s a theory making the rounds in league circles that the arrival of Reggie McKenzie as the team’s next General Manager could lead to the departure of coach Hue Jackson.

Even though both men are represented by Kennard McGuire, there are indications that Jackson wasn’t fully on board with the decision to hire McKenzie. Jackson, whom we believe reports directly to owner Mark Davis, has been publicly candid (perhaps too candid) in recent days regarding his desire for more control. It’s our understanding that, behind the scenes, Jackson has been even more candid, and that the arrival of McKenzie could — not will but could — result in Jackson being one and done in Oakland.

Would it be shocking? Yes. But not much more shocking than last year’s decision to part ways with Tom Cable after a far less expected 8-8 season.

Every G.M. wants to hire his own coach. Even if the G.M. says as he walks through the door that he’s fine with the head coach who is in place, every G.M. wants to hire his own coach. With Jackson seeming in recent days like a bit of a loose cannon when it comes to the management of the team, McKenzie could have some real misgivings about moving forward with Jackson.

The fact that McGuire represents both men will influence the situation, but that will go only so far. At some point, McKenzie will have to make what he believes to be the right decision/recommendation for the franchise, even if it means potentially alienating his own agent by firing one of his agent’s other clients.

At this point, we’re not reporting that Jackson is on his way out or predicting that he’s not long for the job. What we do know is that folks inside the league are keeping an eye on Oakland, because there’s a sense that McKenzie and Jackson possibly won’t be able to coexist.
    …..

Seems like Hue has not been making friends in the Raiders organization lately.

Going to the press after a late season collapse to condemn your players is not smart for a rookie coach. Especially when it can be perceived as a temper tantrum by some of the players and others around the league.

Then he makes a case for more power to the press and comes off like an egomaniac.

Would not be surprised if Hue is a lame duck coach next season as McKenzie looks for His guy to lead this team.

Hue better make the playoffs next year, if he even makes to next year as the HC.

it’s not like Chuck B inherited a good run defense and it tanked under him. it’s been awful from 2004-2010 when he had nothing to do with it!

It was pretty much Davis. Our ostensible DC’s were all running Al’s defense: A base 4-3 (or sometimes 3-4) alignment with straight man coverage, and very little zones or blitzing.

DC’s were supposedly free to blitz or run zones, but if they did and it didn’t work, Al would call down to the sidelines and start yelling at them. No respectable DC would come work under those conditions.

See this is what i’d be worried about. Its the most penalized team. He said he’d fix it, he didn’t, and then said; I’m pissed at my team – im puttin it all on me, but I thought this team was ready to take the next step. THEN he says . I promise you I WONT BE FEELING THIS WAY AGAIN NEXT YEAR – it is setting himself up to fall again, because the team didn’t buy in the first time.

the KC game was just barely a win, and the offense put up, and the Defense just was beaten, period. He couldn’t back it up, because the team’s play wasn(t winning. They didnt win for him OR for themselves.

I mean, he needs to just meet quietly and agree to tone it down. I think the other issues like Boyd laughing on the sidelines after he got burned by Megatron in the Detroit game, then Pryor doing the “Dougie” on the sidelines in the Chief loss spoke volumes. These guys aren’t focused and the culture has to change.

Its ENTRENCHED beyond when Jackson was even hired. Sapp was dancin on the sidelines in a season ending loss against Jacksonville some years ago. You could take the McElroy interview on the Jets

” multiple teammates “didn’t care if we won or lost.”

you could put that right on Oakland.

  386. Bob Marley Says:

    Great news.

Now let’s wait for GB’s season to end so we can hire Mike Trgovac as DC, he’s currently their DL coach.

Trgovac was John Fox’s DC for most of his tenure in Carolina where they usually had a solid unit while running a 4-3.

When he went to Green Bay his boss was 3-4 Dom Capers and Trgovac was in charge of the DL’s transition to the new scheme, so he has experience in both systems.

So Trgovac is a former DL who has coached under 2 of the most respected defensive coaches over the last 15 years, one ran a 4-3 the other a 3-4, gotta like his resume.

Dennis Thurman would also seem like a good choice if Hue gets some input and McKenzie likes what he sees from Dennis, working against him would be the fact that he’s never been a Coordinator before.

Mike Nolan would be a nice hire as well.

I don’t think Del Rio will come back as a DC, he’s probably still owed some big money from Jax and he might as well do the TV thing for a year or two and wait for another HC job in the pro’s or in College.

Spagnuolo seems like a lock to go back to Philly at some point.

  387. Forrest Hump Says:

Obviously wasn’t vetted more thoroughly to include the background stuff in Decatur, Alabama and he played with a 350 lb. beast in front of him named Terrence Cody and a defensive genius (for college, anyway) in Nick Saban – they didnt vett JaMarcus (anapea sleep disorder/purple drank), nor Campbell (some brain problem in college) – McKenzie has a background in developing younger players – now he just needs Eliot Wolf to assist in scouting and finding them.

another story. Back when Turner was the head coach, he and pseudo GM Mike Lombardi went to the Senior Bowl. Guess who their consensus pick was ? Darren Sproles. Who did we draft? Sproles went in the fourth, we took Randy Moss (didnt have a pick – dealt it to Seattle) – ultimately we got Routt, from that and Sproles is heading deep into the playoffs with some record yardage from scrimmage.

It’s time for the players to be held accountable, if they get their feelings hurt good, it was about time.

Now Reggie McKenzie’s background is on personnel, a GM’s job goes far beyond scouting and Reggie will be in charge of the whole team for the 1st time.

The Raiders organization is in for a major rebuilding job as far as the front office is concerned, my guess is that will be Reggie’s priority and that will take some time because, as we all know, the Raiders had no real structure, Reggie has to build one from the ground up.

With that being said, I believe Hue should be back next year and given a 1 year extension that won’t necessarily be fullfiled, just add another year to his contracxt so he’s not a lame duck coach, then closely evaluate his second season as a HC with a full off-season program and without having to worry about personnel decisions, let him just coach the team and if can’t cut it, let him go.

Unless Hue is a problem right now, I want him back that’s for sure but not at the expense of Reggie’s autorithy, Hue needs to understand that he will make a living as a Coach, not as a GM and that if he works with McKenzie and they get the Raiders back on top, it would be the best thing to happen for his career.

Hue deserves a break for goodness sake. I know its been said before but look at all he had to deal with. Al passing, injuries, & no real leadership to help mentor him. On top of that ge is a ROOKIE head coach. Being new on a job you are going to make some mistakes. Ge should be pissed at the players because they are suppose to be executing the plays. How many great plays were called because of penalties. Too many. That’s on the players. They need to play smarter. Hue brought in refs during practices to help with that issue and the PLAYERS still couldn’t get it. Veteran players should have displayed more leadership. Yes the Carson move is questionable but what did you expect Hue to do? He thought his boy Palmer could give is team the best chance to win. And he almost did. We can’t ignore injuries either. No DMAC, Ford, Murphy, moore, Reece, & Schillens for a good part of the season hurt especially in the latter half of the season. And that’s only the offense. Defense was just as bad. D-Line & Secondary hobbled all season. RoMac playing on a bad ankle. Come on son. Hue had to get a little big head. Dude was overwhelmed at the end of the day and vented how he felt at the end of the season. It’s not like he called anybody out per say but at least he was honest. Maybe to little to late bit we all knew that. I feel bad for Rod Woodson because he had depleted staff to coach so he’ll be a casualty but ge gas the makings of being a great DB coach. Biekert just couldn’t get it with the LB core so he gotta bounce too. Defense was just horrible. Needs a coach on D that is about business.

He is a good offensive mind and with a good defensive coordinator. The Raiders will win the West next Year. The crap I’ve read in regards to Hue is remarkable. He is part of AD’s solution, not the problem.

  443. SilverLining20 Says:

On NFL Network’s “Around the League” yesterday, they reported that Chuck Bresnahan was fired. There was a title card, b-roll footage of him looking stupid at practice and the host said it himself.

But I haven’t seen it announced anywhere else and I keep seeing people post “Fire Chuck” as if it hasn’t happened.

  444. ggraider Says:

What is the big deal over Hue Jackson saying what was obvious to anyone watching the lst four weeks of the season – that the Raiders defense did not show up and make plays when it counted. He didn’t single out anyone individually so I can’t understand why anyone on the team would be unhappy. As for him being power hungry, when asked at his last presser whether he wanted to be a GM/Hc he quickly and emphatically said “no way”.

A lot of the bloviators on this site put the blame in the wrong places. In the NFL when teams fail it is usually due to one or both of the following:1) they don’t have enought talent; 2) the talent they have is not being effectively utilized because it does not match the scheme. In the case of the Raiders defense, both are true.

  445. JohnnyRaider Says:

Whew! I can now breathe a sigh of relief, welcome home Reggie. It is a shame the defense showed no pride and commitment to try and win in front of a sold out home crowd; for that, I hope most of the defensive players are released and no other team picks those losers up, they should stay unemployed. Someone thought that maybe Biekert and Woodson should be retained, with a backfield like the Raiders had, I don’t think so. Kept waiting to hear if Chuck B got fired and now that he has, my day is so much more enjoyable, rid of Chuck B and Reggie coming back home to the Nation.

It’s a great day to be a Raiders fan. Isn’t it?!

    “Hue deserves a break…”

Ummm…NO he doesn’t. NOBODY on the Raiders’ sideline or locker room deserves a break. The Raiders should have taken control of their division, and football destiny, after they were 7-4.

After 7-4, the Raiders not making the Playoffs was as huge a failure as any failure in Raiders team history.

Hue doesn’t deserve a break, but he does deserve another season. Al Davis realized the League had shifted to be overly-favorable to Offenses and high scoring, and he chose Hue Jax as HC because he saw that Hue has a free-wheeling Offensive mind. Too free-wheeling sometimes? Maybe…but Hue (usually) gets points on that board.

It’s not time to change the Raiders O. It’s time to contain the Raiders opponents’ Defenses.

But Flynn will get a really nice pay raise soon…and Jason Campbell’s next contract will be a bargain, relatively speaking. The Raiders won’t be spending the big money for Flynn. I’d just as soon make JCampbell a well-paid #2 QB…at least we know he can operate this Offense.

Billy Devaney and Steve Spagnuolo in St. Louis.
Phil Savage and Romeo Crennel in Cleveland.
Mark Dominik and Raheem Morris in Tampa Bay.

There’s no guarantee that a new GM will get his 1st coaching hire right.

And with Reggie McKenzie having to build a front office structure from scratch, why not give Hue a 2nd season to properly evaluate him after a normal off-season program where he can fine tune the offense and work with a new DC that will hopefully prevent our team from losing after averaging 26 points and gaining 500 yards over the last 2 must-win home games.

Nobody can deny the guy can coach an offense and that’s a start, is he HC material? that remains to be seen but … believe it or not, coaches, just as players, tend to grow, learn from their mistakes and get better with experience.

  469. edward teach Says:

The Raiders never announce anything before they absolutely have to, and sometimes they don’t announce a development at all, leaving one to read about it on the team website. I have no doubt that Reggie McKenzie is on board, especially since he himself confirmed it.

On the subject of continuity as it relates to the head coach, I can see why there is the “keep Hue because we’re tired of a new head coach every year” sentiment. Not recommending either course, but this has to be looked at differently than prior years. There is a new GM, with possibly more new people from the same organization. They no doubt have a vision of what they want, and based on the Packers’ success the past several years i’m inclined to give them the benefit of the doubt should the decision be made to move on without Hue Jackson. If McKenzie and his staff feel like the short-term transition is better for the long term success of the franchise, then they will move on and I won’t miss Hue and his drama queen act one bit.

Hue talked a big game but couldn’t back it up.

    The players took notice.

And when Hue would threaten the players job security on Saturday nights before the games, it drew a collective yawn from the team.

    ==================

Nnamdi wanted too much money, shut down a 1/3 of the field and we still never went to the playoffs with him

    +++++++++++++++

Give me a break, Nnamdi signed a 5 year deal for $60 million with $25 guaranteed, the Raiders signed Routt to a 3 year deal for $31.5 million with $20 guaranteed over the first two years!

Nnamdi = 10 times the player Routt is, and for $12 million a year vs Routt’s $10.5 mill ion a year I think we can all see Al made the wrong call. Even if it would have taken $15 million a year to keep Nnamdi it would have been much more worth it compared to overpaying that penalty machine, TD giving up fool Routt!

    +++++++++++++++

The decision should be up to the GM. Hue did not earn the right to have the owner or anyone else stand up and say, hey, you take this job as GM you have to keep Hue. Had he gone 10-6 he would have held that right and almost all of us would be yelling for Hue to stay.

He had his chance and fumbled it away. Let McKenzie decide if his risky decisions to leave points on the field, which almost cost us two games this season, is worth keeping him.

After the season, Asomugha was invited to the Pro Bowl as an alternate but because of late notice he was not able to attend the annual all-star game.[7] He also received the Oakland Raiders “Commitment to Excellence” Award and was named the team’s Most Valuable Player. Asomugha was selected as the Raiders Team Captain for the 2007 season. Opposing quarterbacks tested him only 31 times with a mere 10 completions the entire season. One NFL scout told Pro Football Weekly that Asomugha was thrown at “less than any defender in the last ten years” in 2007 [10] He finished the 2007 season with 34 tackles(32 solo), 1 interception and 7 breakups and was named a 2008 Pro Bowl alternate.
A free agent in the 2008 offseason, the Raiders placed the exclusive franchise tag on Asomugha on February 20, 2008.[11]

Asomugha covers Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Michael Jenkins at a home game on November 2, 2008.
Asomugha was again selected a team captain before the 2008 season. Opposing quarterbacks tested him only 27 times the entire season resulting in just 8 completions. Only perennial all-pros Randy Moss (3 receptions, 40 yards) and Tony Gonzalez (2 receptions, 34 yards) would catch more than one ball on him during the year. New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick said Asomugha is “as complete a cornerback as he has seen all year”.[12] He finished the 2008 season with 40 tackles, 1 interception, 1 forced fumble, and 9 pass deflections. He received the Oakland Raiders “Commitment to Excellence” Award for the second time and was named the team’s 2008 Co-Most Valuable Player along with running back Justin Fargas. Asomugha was selected as a starter for the 2009 Pro Bowl. He was selected onto The Sporting News 2008 All-Pro Team [13] as well as the Pro Football Writers Association All-NFL Team for 2008.[14] Asomugha was also selected onto Peter King’s Sports Illustrated 2008 All-Pro team [15] as well as The Associated Press 2008 All-Pro Team.
On February 19, 2009 the Raiders re-signed Asomugha to a complex three-year deal that makes him the highest paid defensive back in NFL history. The first two years, worth $28.5 million, are fully guaranteed. In the third year of the contract, if Oakland wants to keep Asomugha, it must pay him the average of the top five highest-paid quarterbacks or $16.875 million, whichever is higher. If the Raiders fail to pick up the option, Asomugha will become a free agent with Oakland not having the ability to tag him again.[16]
A team captain again in 2009 and the NFL’s least targeted cornerback by an extremely wide margin, Asomugha was challenged by opposing quarterbacks only 27 times and allowed 13 completions the entire season. After his performance against the Houston Texans, head coach Gary Kubiak said “Asomugha is the best (corner) I’ve seen in a while throughout this league. He’s big, he’s fast, they put him out there on an island the whole game. He’s an exceptional player.” [17] Similar to the past three seasons, Asomugha finished the 2009 season with 34 tackles, 1 interception, and was second in the league with 8 tackles for loss from the cornerback position. Cleveland Browns defensive coordinator Rob Ryan said “The guy is truly unbelievable. He made himself the best corner in football by his work ethic, the way he studies tape, and he’s so smart.” [18] Following the 2009 season, Asomugha was selected as a starter for the 2010 Pro Bowl. Asomugha was selected onto The Sporting News 2009 All-Pro Team (2nd team) as well as The Associated Press 2009 All-Pro Team (2nd team). This would mark his third selection to both the Pro Bowl and All-Pro team in his seven-year career with the Oakland Raiders.
In 2010, Asomugha was selected as a member of the Fox Sports’s[19] and USA Today’s NFL All-Decade Team.[20]
The shutdown corner lived up to his title once again in the 2010 season. While shadowing the opposing teams top receiver most of the season, Asomugha was still targeted much less than any other cornerback in the NFL. Asomugha allowed just 10 receptions on the 27 passes thrown his way. Most important, Asomugha did not give up a touchdown all year.[21] “He has extraordinary speed – great speed,” Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said. “He’s exactly what you’re looking for in a press corner and about as good as you could hope a guy to be.” [22] When facing the Arizona Cardinals, All-Pro wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald said “The thing you see on tape for a man of his size, he has incredible hips and amazingly quick feet, and that’s just God given ability to be that tall and be able to move and cut and drive on balls the way he’s able to.”.[23] Following the 2010 season, Asomugha was selected as a starter for the 2011 Pro Bowl. Asomugha was selected onto ESPN John Clayton’s 2010 All-Pro Team[24] as well as Peter King’s Sports Illustrated 2010 All-Pro team.[25] Asomugha was also selected to the prestigious Associated Press 2010 All-Pro Team, his fourth selection as an All-Pro.

  568. MikieG Says:

This is great stuff from Suggs on Tebow:

Depending on how wild-card weekend shakes out, the Ravens could host the Broncos on Jan. 15. But if that turns out to be the case, Baltimore OLB Terrell Suggs says his team won’t be asking the Almighty for any additional help.

“With all due respect, we don’t pray on the sideline,” said Suggs on ESPN’s First Take this week, taking a not-so-subtle dig at the frequent send-ups of Denver QB Tim Tebow.

“I mean we do — we give it up to God (just for) safety and health, but we’re gonna go out there and win that game. We don’t need our kicker to make a 62-yarder. I’m just saying. We don’t need guys to fall out of bounds and then we get to punt it back … we don’t need stuff like that to happen for us.”

That was a reference to the assistance Bears RB Marion Barber provided the Broncos in Denver’s 13-10 OT win in Week 14, the last game the team won before ending the year on a three-game slide.

“Our quarterback knows how to go out and win games,” said Suggs. “When our quarterback prays, he be like, ‘You know what, God, you know what, you sit on your couch and enjoy this. Thank you for blessing me and letting me wake up to play this game. I’m gonna impress you.’ ”

Suggs clearly didn’t seem impressed by Tebow. But despite an 8-8 record and year-end slump, the Broncos still hung on to the AFC West with the Raiders unable to take advantage to win their regular-season finale.

    Suggs’ take?

“Once again, God had to save Tim Tebow and the Denver Broncos,” he said. “Like I said, they didn’t win. It’s simple — you win, you’re division champs. He couldn’t even give them two drives. They lost, 7-3. Two drives gives them 9-7.”

  569. Dr. Hunter S. Thompson Says:

    By Bill Williamson
It’s not official, but it appears Green Bay executive Reggie McKenzie will be hired as the new general manager of the Oakland Raiders. McKenzie is the first new decision maker in Oakland after the October death of owner Al Davis.

    Here are some initial thoughts:

It’s no surprise. McKenzie emerged as the leading candidate shortly after Davis’ death. He clearly impressed the Raiders in his Wednesday interview. While they were expected to look at several other candidates, it was McKenzie all the way.
What about Hue Jackson? ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that how much power McKenzie will have will be determined. But remember McKenzie was in a good situation in Green Bay and he would have had other opportunities in the future. He would have likely taken this only if the Raiders gave him significant say in the organization.
Where will it leave Jackson? He had been the primary decision maker since October and there have been whispers that perhaps a new general manager would want to bring in his own coach. The fact that the Raiders moved quickly to hire McKenzie may stoke that talk. Will Jackson be replaced? The odds are against it, but crazier things have happened.
McKenzie has Raider blood. He was a Raider linebacker from 1985-1988. Davis selected him in the 10th round of the draft nearly 27 years ago. Davis never knew he was choosing his replacement.
Former Davis associates Ron Wolf and Ken Herock have some influence with Mark Davis. Herock and Wolf recommended McKenzie to Davis and they were clearly listened to.
Are the Raiders going to become Green Bay West? It’s not the worst thing that could happen to the franchise. There has been talk that McKenzie could bring the Ron Wolf’s son, Eliot, with him.
Does this mean Darren Perry and Winston Moss, two Green Bay assistants, could be in the mix? They were mentioned as head coaching candidates last year. Maybe one of them emerges as a defensive coordinator candidate or as a head coach if a change is made. Green Bay’s key free agents are tight end Jermichael Finley, running back Ryan Grant and quarterback Matt Flynn. None of those players fill an immediate need for the Raiders.
When will he be able to start the job? Under league rules, McKenzie can’t be hired until after the Packers’ season. That may not be until February. However, the Packers can let McKenzie move on. I bet they will. He has been a good soldier and it’s not like they need him for next week’s game plan.

I’ve known McKenzie for several years. He is a friendly, quiet and laid back guy. Don’t expect him to be a swash buckler. He is a football man who will put in his work. He will not a be a headlines maker and he won’t make moves just to make moves. He will bring stability to the franchise and will do what it takes to improve the team.

Part of that “everywhere else” includes going right at #26 over and over and over. And #26 not making plays over and over and over. Thats all I’m saying. Then last year in a contract year Routt FINALLY plays worth a damn, and Al shows him the bank. I just hated it, and still do. Growing up with a single mother, I didn’t experience the love of a father. But when I saw Mark Davis shed tears after the Texan game, I felt Mark’s loss of his father. Whatever I felt about Al Davis at that moment was replaced with admiration of being first a father to his son. I now know sincerely that Al loved Mark. I can only hope that I could love my son as much as Al loved his.

Today, Mark is honoring his father’s legacy and a father’s love by bringing back the Raiders to their glory years in hiring Reggie McKenzie.

They constantly overpursue, trying to get to the QB. The RB draw gets them every time. Cutback runners have a field day with the defensive line, leading them out of position then busting through a gaping hole right where the middle of the defensive line should be.

Hey me too, but players have had injuries early in their careers and then overcome them (Charles Woodson anyone?).

The reward of keeping McFadden on the team is much more than the risk of letting him stay. Best case he returns to the form he demonstrated for nearly a year and a half and we have an amazing player. Worst case, he doesn’t and we are out some cap space. It is not like he is tradeable right now, so just keep him and hope for the best. Just have a reliable backup RB as an insurance policy.

Jhill, Bynum is a different story. Much larger percentage of cap and one of only 5 players on the court at once. Way to risky to keep him.
