Raiders confirm McKenzie hire — updated
By Steve Corkran
Friday, January 6th, 2012 at 12:29 pm in Oakland Raiders.
The Raiders just confirmed the hiring of Reggie McKenzie as their general manager. A news conference is scheduled for Tuesday at 2 p.m.
Since this post, I received confirmation that McKenzie will be at the news conference Tuesday. Also, word from Green Bay says McKenzie will begin working for the Raiders right away as they attempt to fill the power vacuum created by the death of Al Davis in early October.
McKenzie has been with the Green Bay Packers since 1994. He currently is the Packers dirrector of football operations. The Packers are in the NFC Playoffs, and they could be playing for most of the next month if they are to make it as far as the Super Bowl.
However, it appears as if the Packers have agreed to let McKenzie begin his new job in the coming days, which is great news for the Raiders.

If they are announcing the hiring I assume he has been released from hi Packers’ obligations and can start now.
Coaches can’t be hired until their teams are out of the playoffs, and it was reported that the same rule applied to front office guys, so if the Raiders are having a press conference, McKenzie must have been released by the Pack.

Welcome Home #54. This is a great hire for the Raiders
!!! Next a new defensive coordinator.
January 6th, 2012 at 12:33 pm
Wonder who will be at the press conference, and what, if any, announcements will be made.
Will Mark say anything?
Will Hue be there?
Will Herrera be his normal charming self?
Will they announce DC staffing changes?
Will either of the Wolf’s be there?

Is Seymour too old and slow to move back to DE? Or would he just be expensive back-up?
If Houston is the 3-tech?

Hey me too, but players have had injuries early in their careers and then overcome them (Charles Woodson anyone?).
————-
From 1998-2001, Charles Woodson started every game but one.
++++++++++++
Woodson broke his leg like twice and had turf toe injuries his final years with the Raiders…..and he was still young when that happened.
January 6th, 2012 at 12:35 pm
Davis made some good drafts these last few years, which is a damn big part of a GM’s job. BUT, even though I’ll stick up for Al, there’s no denying that this hire is a turning point for the Raiders. And Reggie is the right man for the job.

QUESTION:
since Reggie Mac was the ‘Director of Football Operations’ for Green Bay, is he free to leave their organization today?
I know coaches have to wait until the season is over, but can still come to some sort of verbal agreement. Is it different with upper management?
It’s not like Aaron Rodgers’ game would tank (knowing that they might lose Reggie, Shaun Herock & Eliot Wolf)
The players and coaches wouldn’t even notice these guys in suits were gone until the offseason, right?

—————-
If the Raiders go 3-4, Seymour should absolutely be retained because he’s the only Raider with any experience playing 5-tech DE.
I never thought of him as a good fit at 4-3 DE. If the Raiders add a 4-3 DE he needs to be a big-time pass rusher like Cliff Avril.
Houston is a natural fit at 3-tech DT. High motor, active in the run game, gives him way more opportunities to be disruptive.
3-4 or 4-3, the Raiders needs are pretty similar.
If they stay 4-3, they need a 1-tech gap-plugging DT to put next to Houston, and a big-time pass rusher at RDE.
If they go 3-4, they need a 0-tech NT who can take on blockers at the point of attack, and they need a blindside OLB who can consistently make plays behind the line of scrimmage.
LB and CB/FS are also going to be needs in either the 3-4 or the 4-3.
January 6th, 2012 at 12:40 pm
Best part of this new hire? We will never again have to read about how a young up and coming HC like Sean Payton passed on the job at the advice of former Raider coaches and other NFL personnel.
That era is over.
The Raiders will become a desired destination once again…..for players who want to win, not just get that last big contract, and for coaches who are qualified.
It is finally over.

People just don’t get it on the 3-4/4-3 debate.
These teams around the league, never stay in their base defense even 40% of the time.
The Packers ran the 2-4-5 over 40% of the time last year, and the 3-4 less than 20%. Raji played more DE than DT.
It’s about being creative and confusing to the offense.
Doesn’t matter if you have replace Lamar Houston with Travis Goethel on the field.
You have to confuse and fluster the offense. We were the one’s confused and flustered last year.

From that link:
“The biggest myth in football is that your base defense is what you are. The Patriots are known as a 3–4, so they should want a big nose guy and 290-pound defensive ends who play the run first. Right? When New England signed troubled defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth, the outcry wasn’t so much about Haynesworth’s work ethic but about how he’d fit in. Haynesworth hates the 3–4, and Bill Belichick’s a 3–4 guy. But is he really? “That’s a media fabrication,” the Patriots coach says. “There are a lot of different alignments out there. It’s the techniques, the fundamentals that you teach your players, more than the 3–4, 4–3 that people say you use.”
In fact the Patriots played a 3–4 on just 39.7% of their snaps in 2010, according to game-tape analysis by ProFootballFocus.com. The site counted 29 plays on which New England cornerback Kyle Arrington lined up at defensive end, with his hand on the ground.
The Patriots weren’t alone in this public deception. Super Bowl champ Green Bay, another so-called 3–4 team, had just two defensive linemen on the field on 68.6% of its plays, according to Pro Football Focus.

I’m just saying that 4-3 or 3-4 doesn’t matter unless you have a good coach, and players who are capable of doing what the coach asks of them.
The Raiders simply need to find the best defensive coach available to them, because their needs are similar no matter what base defense they run.

Yeah, I think Shaughnessy is pretty solid in the run game, actually. Good (not great) pass-rusher, but most importantly can shed his blocker and make tackles.
Not that I dislike Houston at LE, especially in obvious run situations, I just think that at this point he can help the team more on the inside of the defensive line, where the Raiders continue to struggle against the run. Houston is one of the few players on defense who has good gap discipline pretty consistently.

But I would say give him some slack, he was a first year HC, the defacto GM and the OC-playcaller. That is too much on anyone’s plate and I think that showed. ReggieMac will get him back in line and they will get better. Good days ahead…

Ravens in the 4-3 41% of the time 3-4 38%
Steelers in 3-4 only 47% of the time.
Dolphins (Mike Nolan) 3-4 36%, 2 lineman 32%
I’ll leave it at that
January 6th, 2012 at 1:11 pm
@sullivan. A few gift wrapped INTs is no reason to over look an inability to tackle any RB. Inability to catch any WR. Inability effectively blitz. He may have heart, but so did Gradkowski and we all know he sucks!

Vegas,
I presume no matter what Reggie McKenzie does with the roster that McSkinnyLegs will still be a Raider come next September.
you need to set up odds for which game he will get injured. (you could wait until the schedule comes out but as he is able to get injured on turf, on dirt, on grass, being hit or not being hit I don’t believe the schedule matters.)
then set up an over/under for games missed.

Dave, it’s called making plays. It’s called making yourself seen. It’s like Romo said, we have to know you’re there. That’s how you know who the good defensive players are. You hear the commentators saying their name all day. They show up. You don’t have to look for them. Giordano is our only defensive player that’s been on that level. The rest are on a siesta most of the year, if they’re not getting arrested off the field.

Davis, just what is a “gift wrapped INT”? If he drops the ball, you’re saying he sucks for that. You’re not fooling anyone. You hate Giordano because he’s part of the new, energized mindset that’s here to take over the old, lazy, “let’s just hope they’re afraid of us because we’re the mighty Raiders” mentality.

I highly doubt the new GM’s first move will be to fire Hue. It would stand to reason that he will have a long term plan and a short term plan. After two 8-8 seasons the short term plan will likely be much different than if the team was at the bottom. Short term plan: Work with Hue to assemble a coaching staff, restructure contracts to bring in a talent upgrade where necessary and begin to build through the draft. You cannot implement a long term plan immediately.
January 6th, 2012 at 1:17 pm

McKenzie’s going to review Raider game film, see which players have been showing up on defense week after week, and give Giordano a new contract. The rest of the secondary? Time to talk restructure, or release.
January 6th, 2012 at 1:31 pm
Yes, excellent hire by mark davis!!!
Build through the draft and develop your own players, sprinkle in a veteran free agent or two, that is the way we need to do it.
First order of biz, hire a dc. next get us some draft picks by trading a player. What player will have enough name value to get us back into the first two rounds? CARSON PALMER!!!!
Trade carson and get us into the first round if you can but i would tke a second for him also. The browns or the vikings may be willing to take this garbage off our hands. Sign Jc to the money he deserves and restore that positive synergy we build from last year to this. This would also restore the sorely needed leadership that the team has been missing since our electric 4-2 start. Palmer threw too many picks and wasnt a good leader, certainly wasnt the player or leader JC is. Any qb that butchers an end of half field goal attempt because he fails to understand clock management, then proceeds to argue and yell at the head coach on his way into the locker is guy I will never trust to be a leader.

Here’s how Hue Jackson’s HC resume reads currently:
-Set NFL record for penalties.
-had a week to prepare, and HIS team still made Tebow look like a future HOFer
-Regressed in division play and home record
-Did an article about getting mani’s and pedi’s after his team lost by 30+ points
-Finished the season 1-4
January 6th, 2012 at 1:33 pm
Dakota – #26…that was very well said. McKenzie has to spend time going over this whole roster and picking it apart with what he believes is good and bad about it and when you consider the salary cap ramifications from all the said moves over the years, we can’t say for sure that we’re contenders right away. Its almost like college football in this situation. Its going to take a good 4-5 years to revamp everything from the current management people to the Head Coach and staff, to the players.
We may win the AFC West this next season and we may not. I just know things are going to be much better in the future for this team. At this point, I’m not terribly disappointed with Hue Jackson or anything but I say hand the keys to McKenzie and let him make all the decisions from here, even if that means letting Jackson go. I just want to win, however that can happen. Jon Gruden anyone? Haha. I’m not even sure if hes the answer either of course but regardless…I’m happy with the direction. We can finally be a modern football for once. Lets hope the penalties die down too.

we need draft picks to address some glaring holes on this team, palmer can bring us the picks. Is there any other highly over rated player that we can trade to get back into the firsts two rounds?
Jc hit deep passes while a raider and a redskin, just because he missed a couple early this season doesnt mean he cant do it. news flash, palmer has not only missed deep, but thrown picks into triple coverage trying to do it, he also misses short and medium routes.
There is far more to playing qb than just throwing deep. Palmer connecting on a few deep balls, doesnt negate the god awful ints

Method, why would Mark fire his head coach right after hiring a GM? Usurp the new GM, on day one? Sure. It’s McKenzie’s call. And I think he’ll give Hue at least one year to improve on a .500 first year season with question marks all over the roster, question marks that weren’t Hue’s fault.

Since the Raiders are likely to have, at most, 4 draft picks, free agency looks to be the only way for McKenzie to put his immediate stamp on the team (other than a new head coach). The good thing here is that most of those players are crappy depth. The lack of depth has killed the Raiders for years; the roster was about as shallow as a summertime Texas mud puddle. McKenzie, if he does nothing else before 2013, can help the team take a huge step forward by bolstering its second stringers and special teams guys.
Keep Bush, Branch, Giordano, Reece and Bryant. I’ll pack the bags if it’ll help all the others get out of town sooner.

January 6th, 2012 at 1:45 pm
McKenzie’s not going to come right in and throw Hue under the bus. McKenzie is not some dumb Raider fan who thought this team had the talent to go 16-0. He knows most of the roster is a joke, and that it’s not Hue’s fault. He also knows Carson Palmer deal was a necessary evil. It was either that or Boller. McKenzie is going to give Hue and Palmer one more year, start building outside of them immediately.

Believe it or not, Tommy Kelly may actually be a decent trade chip. He certainly can rush the passer and a team looking to get more pressure on the QB from its defensive interior might be willing to part with a 3rd rounder for him since most, if not all, of the big money on that contract has been paid out by the Raiders already.

So you think Palmer is good enough to get us a 1st rd pick?
Why would we trade him and keep a QB like Glo who CLEARLY would not have any thing close to 1st rd value attached to his name?
==================
I would do it yesterday. carson seems to be highly over rated and his name value could get you into the first or second round. Allowing us to draft for spots we need to fill.
Jc was a pefect fit fo our young offense, he made plays, he won and he was an incredible leader. While he may not receive the accolades of his counter part, he certainly was having a better year, and has been a better player for at least the last two years. i base this on the number of wins and turnovers, and the way they perform on 3rd down and in the fourth quarter.
Palmer seems to be a diva and his antics are not good for the team, neither are the turn overs.
Perceived value is not what I judge qbs on, like so many of you. media hype and pedigree mean nothing to me, only what you do on sunday

I disagree with you bra, here is why. Under a normal circumstance a rookie head coach that finishes 8-8 is considered a good job. he made some clear mistakes but he seemed to correct some of them as he went along so im sure he will continue to improve. When you consider the very unique circumstances losing davis, losing your team captain and leader of the team JC, losing dmac and ford and moore, plugging in a new qb mid season, and a god awful defense. I think 8-8 is outstanding.
As a default gm, hue gets a c. i love the curry trade, but the palmer deal was horrendous. Hue wasnt hired to be gm so i separate those two job functions.
Mackenzie will now step in and clean up hues mess, hu can give input and focus on coaching

In the end of the season Carson Palmer was throwing for over 9 yards per attempt. Against Detroit he completed 80% of his passes. Yes. 80%. The reason Palmer would garner a lst round draft choice is because he is WORTH a lst round draft choice. So, who would you replace him with if you did trade him? And please don’t say Jason Campbell or Tyrelle Pryor.

I’m okay with the Raiders retaining Hue & Carson; one this would take a lot of pressure off of Reggie his first season; he could evaluate, have a near full draft in 2013.
January 6th, 2012 at 2:00 pm
From the Ron Wolf interview posted a couple of days ago:
“The great thing about working for him (Al Davis) was the fact that you knew what you were supposed to do…”
In business, I call that “accountability.”
I think the hiring of Reggie McKenzie will bring accountability back to the organization. From things said about McKenzie’s work in Green Bay, he is able to work well with people but is not afraid to assert himself.
Accountability is something that’s been lacking in the Raider organization for quite a few years and was sorely evident this year.
Hue Jackson floundered this year in part because he ended up wearing too many hats, and too often he ended up being accountable to himself. Having a true GM – and a structure of accountability within the organization – will allow the Raiders to progress from year to year rather than flounder in the same mire year after year.

Pryor has absolutely zero trade value folks. remember that most experts dont even think he can play qb, so there is no way any front office will give up a high pick for this kid, that hasnt even put any thing on film in the nfl.
pryor only has trade value in the minds of bloggers that think he can play. In the real world he will need to prove it on the field before anyone would ever consider it.

Fair enough.
I think JC could have won more games here with a better defense. I think a lot of QBs could be productive with weapons like DMac, D Moore, DHB, Ford, and Bush.
Palmer throws the ball to where WRs are supposed to be instead of waiting to see someone open. That style is going to produce more picks by default, wouldn’t you say?

here’s the Dr. Andrews report from S & B Darren McFadden undergoing tests…
In an effort to try to return this season from his LisFranc injury, Oakland Raiders running back Darren McFadden has been undergoing CT scans, MRIs and X-rays on his foot and consulting with Dr. Robert Anderson this week, according to a league source.
McFadden is considered unlikely to play Saturday at Kansas City but has not surrendered hope of playing against the San Diego Chargers in the regular-season finale or in the postseason if the the Raiders can make it there.
Oakland (7-7) likely needs to win its last two games and hope for losses from other teams to sneak into the playoffs as either the AFC West champion or a wild card. The Raiders’ hopes for an AFC West title would end if they lose to the Chiefs and the Denver Broncos (8-6) beat the Buffalo Bills on Saturday. The New York Jets (8-6) currently hold the last wild-card spot and the Cincinnati Bengals (8-6) and Tennessee Titans (7-7) are ahead of Oakland in the pecking order for that last spot if the Jets were to falter.
The fact that McFadden is even attempting to play speaks to his toughness; other players this season, including Houston Texans quarterback Matt Schaub, already have seen their seasons end due to LisFranc injuries.
What Anderson told McFadden after he looked at the test results on the foot is that it is about managing the pain when the injury clearly still is not fully healed. McFadden spoke with Anderson on Tuesday after undergoing his CT scan last Tuesday.
McFadden initially needed crutches to get around and wore a protective walking boot while making occasional appearances at practice.
On Tuesday, he had neither as he did some light jogging at practice.
Raiders coach Hue Jackson continues to hold out hope that McFadden can play again this season but not at the risk of aggravating his condition. He suffered a setback after attempting to jog last month, so Jackson is taking a cautious approach.
“He just wasn’t ready for that kind of work,” Jackson said Tuesday. “We have to be very careful with that. We don’t want to do anything that’s going to jeopardize his career or his opportunity to play.”
Adam Schefter is ESPN’s NFL Insider. Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.
Oakland Raiders’ Darren McFadden still hoping to play, source says – ESPN
I’m sorry, but what I took out of that article is that dmac needs to man up, shoot up, and tape up for his team. It’s a pain management issue just like the doctor told him.

I don’t know man… if its this serious, what is it worth him having a career altering injury or even worse something that plagues him his entire life.
Perhaps he should have been IR’d but if he is willing to give it a spin once it is cleared, the go for it. DMC took pain killing shots for turf toe and it only made it worst. He was ineffective because he lost sensitivity in his feet and it only prolonged the healing time. I don’t blame him for passing on the shot when he knows his foot isn’t right.

This will probably seem a lil harsh BUT will say it anyways….I know disabled veterans and police officers that have sacrificed alot and have to live with horrible pain and injuries with peanuts of a pension in return for their service. And now we are debating about a kid being compensated millions of dollars that may have a sore foot in return for living the dream of being an nfl player…man please….play/retire or stfu is all i’m saying…

Wut I took from that is Hue saying “Jeporadize his career”… if its ne thing close to him jeporadizing his career we shut him down for next yr…. I don’t care about getting him back @ like 75% for the playoffs this 1 yr if its gonna risk costing us the next 4 or 5yrs of an Elite RB…. plus were getting Jones back so let’s roll with that…

So with an injury that is extremely painful, you just expect them to numb it and him to essentially run on a foot he won’t be able to feel? He’ll just be a liability out there…

Only if the doctor says its possible…and again what i took out of that article is the doctor telling mcfadden about it being a pain management issue.

This situation has been totally mismanaged. Should have IR’d him. Hue has known all along that he wanted to hope they would be back if we made it to the playoffs. Hue had no intention of playing DMC anytime short of the wildcard game.
He should have signed someone lie Bennett to spell Bush when Jones went down.

1. Take a 5 pound weight, hold it at hip level, and drop it on your bare foot on a cement floor.
Did you manage to do it once?
2. Now do it again 30 times in the next 3 hours.
3. When it is all swollen and purple next week, repeat the process.
Guys with the balls to do step 1 I’ll take your posts seriously when you say he should tough it out. Guys who complete step 3 have a clue.
If he tried to play, we would not be good, would maybe ruin his career, and for absolutely no purpose.

Yea, pain management due to the fact THAT THE INJURY IS NOT YET HEALED! Let the guy heal up, especiall since it could ruin a career. He’s still only 24 years old, dont need to ruin his/Raider’s future. Sorry, but your police officer and firefighter comparison was a very bad example.

All I said is if the doctor says you can play by managing the pain, YOU PLAY…It’s his job. The doctor said it’s a pain management issue. If he can’t play then shut it down for the season or retire but please stfu already…thats all i was saying.

===========
there we have it, if its a matter of style, give me the guy that protects the ball. If palmers style is the blame for throwing picks, it isnt acceptable. Picks will kill you and we witnessed it first hand, regardless of qb style. by the way jc also throws to spots, and anticipates breaks, he just doesnt get the credit for doing so, nor does he turn it over like he is being paid by the opposition.

Agreed.
I can’t wait to see what this guy can do next preseason.
I didn’t see him play much in college, but Cam’s success, and to some degree, Tebow’s has me intrigued to say the least.
Matt Flynn is not coming to Oakland to backup Carson Palmer, so I don’t see a better option out there than Pryor for our #2.

We do need secondary help badly and a new DC
January 6th, 2012 at 2:11 pm
other players I would be okay with coming back are Groves & Giordano; Gio made plays, but simply must play in dime packages; do not send him on a blitz he does not have that kind of speed, nor does he have the speed to cover speed receivers, but he does have an eye for the ball, and Groves was solid on special teams.

The taint of Stank AL is clearing rapidly. Now all we have to do is clear out the drags from AL’s bygone era including Hue and coaching staff below him, a roster 3/4rds full of schlubs, and we’ll be ready to go.
By the way, did anyone hear Hue and Sandusky were caught with their pants down in the weight room?

He’ll finsh his contract and most likely his career a Raider. He just turned 32yo last week and I think he’s got another 3 or 4 years left in him. He’s not scheduled to be a free agent until 2015
he balked about playing for Mike Brown and the Cincy Bungles. He never said he’d only come out of retirement to play for the ex-Cincy WR Coach! These two are not a package deal and certainly not tied at the hip. As long as Mark Davis doesn’t remind Carson of Mike Brown we’re safe to assume he’s happy and ready to take the Raiders to the playoffs next year

We went heavy on 3 wides becaus palmer sucks with boot legs and play action from the i form, he doesnt have the mobility like jc, and was in a 3 wide heavy offense with the bungles. This was done to accommodate palmer.

I’d say it’s the style the HC preferred.
JC was an NFL QB so of course he can throw to spots and anticipate breaks.
This whole thing probably comes down to about 3 or 4 throws per game either way. I think Palmer trusts himself and the WRs much more than JC did. I don’t think that is debateable. You can call it taking chances, Cable can call it cutting it loose.
JFB and I had this exact “style” conversation while JC was still the QB. I actually prefer somewhere right in the middle of JC and Palmer. All Palmer needs to do is check it down a bit more and he’ll be fine.

The 47-year-old McKenzie, who has spent the past 18 season in Green Bay’s personnel department, will take over his new job with the Raiders immediately, a person with knowledge of the hiring told The Associated Press, speaking on condition of anonymity because those details weren’t formally announced. That means McKenzie will leave the defending Super Bowl champion Packers (15-1) before they open defense of their title. The NFC’s No. 1 seed is off this weekend with a first-round playoff bye.
“I would like to thank Reggie McKenzie for all that he has done for the Green Bay Packers over the last 18 years,” Packers GM Ted Thompson said Friday in a statement. “Reggie is a tremendous talent, but more importantly, he is a good friend and great family man. His contributions to our organization are numerous, and he is ready for the opportunity to be a general manager in the National Football League.”

Im almost positive mackenzie will see the carson deal as a blunder, and a reach. he believes like davis used to before free agency in building through the draft. im sure if he were here when jc went down he does nt make that deal, neither does davis.

I am also certain that mackenzie will be alarmed when he looks at carsons performance, and compares it to jc’s. It doesnt take a genius to see which qb is playing better football. Can’t believe I have to post this. . .throwing to a spot is the classic QB action on a timing pattern.
Most of the successful passing attacks feature this aspect. Peyton Manning is known for his skill in this region. . .
The next person who posts something like calling Carson Palmer out for missing WR’s while throwing to a spot & not knowing what this is called (elementary football. Not even freshman level . . .) looses his man card.
In my circles you would be immediately banned.
Ultimate moron. . .

=================================
It would be nice if it were really just a matter of checking down more often, but it is more than that.
1.) If your “style” means more picks than it is incumbant upon you to change and protect the ball.
2.) carson didnt just force the ball deep, like many want us to think, he often made terrible reads, especially when the heat was in his face. Example, the first pick vs gb, with mild pressure he rolls out and throws a 10 yard pass into quintuple coverage?!?! defenders fell off their assignments to follow him as they know his tendency to panic and make bad throws. This was not about him trying to make a big play down the field.
3.) carson was late and off target often especially on comeback routes on the sideline. This is why he HAS LED THE NFL IN PICK 6 THROWN FOR THE LAST TWO YEARS. defenders facing their own endzone jump the route and take it to the house, we saw it several times this year, and one was called back by penalty and at least 4 others were dropped.
It seems to me that bungles cant change their stripes and much like i pointed out with grads last year, guys that throw lots of picks will continue to do so. palmer has always thrown lots of picks like grads, this isnt a fluke its a long standing pattern
Why do people refuse to acknowledge this fact

I think people realize Palmer throws a few more picks than other QBs. He also does a LOT MORE DAMAGE with his good throws than safe guys like JC, McCoy, Pennington.
It’s a risk-reward.
And it helped get the Bengals to the playoffs TWICE in his last 5 full seasons.

you wouldn’t rather be playing for the playoffs this last season and the next two instead of using a mid-1st rounder on the 3rd-highest non-Barkley, non-Jones rated QB this season?

we didnt need palmer to make the playoffs next year or after Jc was fine, and we were on our way.
No i dont think the trade made sense, even if palmer took us to the playoffs, (and i knew he wouldnt) the team wasnt good enough to go far.
Panic move and a reach we could have missd the playoffs with boller and ended up with a decent draft position. stocked in the draft and been poised with a healthy team next year. unnecessary risk that back fired like a rusty gun at a drive by

alex, just like i told you about your boy grads last year, MORE PICKS IS NEVER A GOOD THING.
Think for a second there are many ways to score tds besides td passes. a qb can lead the drive and hand it off or run it for a score. your defense and special teams can score, td passes are over rated in this respect.
Yet a turnover will get you beat more often than not. In particular interceptions are back breakers. Dont you think farve would have won more than one superbowl if he learned to avoid the back breaking picks?
elway won when he learned to protect the ball first. In fact protecting the ball is a qbs first job
January 6th, 2012 at 2:40 pm
JC doesn’t read defenses quick enough; which is why he misses receivers downfield, throws the ball out of bounds & ends off checking down to RB’s. . .
I WAS a huge ‘Soup backer. I had bought into the lack of continuity he had with OC’s & the like, all the way back to college.
But the way he dtsplayed his ineptitude in the Cleveland game helped me make up my mind; this guy, for all his strong character, being a stand up guy, well, this doesn’t hide his shortcomings; which are huge.
His strength is being a game manager. You don’t want this guy leading the way, do you?
Also; just mow many snaps did Palmer have with DMAC? How ’bout ‘Soup? Yeah, I thought so. . .the comebacks become receptions when his WR’s develop the ability to sell the deeper routes, thus creating the requisite space to complete comeback routes.
How many times have you seen Raider WR’s covered on comeback routes? Yeah, thought so. . .
I don’t see how anyone could prefer ‘Soup over Palmer. . .oh, well, that is one reason next year will be so sewwt. . .continuity & repitition will solve these stated problems. . .

Obviously, Mark Davis and John Madden were wise enough not to fall for Hue’s “I’m in because I’m in it deep” garbage, and didn’t include him in the interview.
And, if Hue’s retained, hopefully not, he’s given less power and control, and not more like he demanded at his presser.

none of this explaains why palmer has had so many picks in his career folks. Its is a pattern like the bungle stripes he came here with.
Please provide some proof of this “reads the defense slowly” garbage. You have no clue how quickly a qb makes his reads from your couch.
face it this is strictly about your favorite, and not based on what happens on the field. On the field Jc has outperformed palmer for at least the last two years. Dont tell me about passing yards or td totals, look at turn overs, its the qbs number one assignment.

On a cold snowy day here in Halifax, my thoughts were certainly warmed up with the announcement of #54’s hire. The MD era of Raiders football is underway. Mark Davis has proven he is a shrewd operator in the highest echelons of the NFL. Swiftly righting the Raider’s ship with a great hire to guide the teams’ near , medium and long term future!!!
I must say, it was due in part to the uncanny football mind of his father AD, that I became a fan of the Silver & Black in the early 70’s. I feel better even though it has been less than a week since season ending disappointment and hope that it can be the end of the post season drought.
Congratulations to Mark Davis and CEO Amy Trask for taking the Raiders into the future beginning with such a positive move.
BTW I hope Kansas Statw whips Arkansas in the Cotton Bowl tonight, never liked Petrino especially after he quit on the Falcons…what a bum.

Here is some stuff on the new GM from the Packer website.
He is a twin. He was valedictorian of his high school class (means he had the highest GPA in the class). Has a masters in eduction. (Maybe he can get some of the guys to learn how to play).
Named director – football operations May 27, 2008. First joined Packers in 1994 as a pro personnel assistant; promoted to director of pro personnel in 1997.
A 10th-round pick from Tennessee in 1985, he enjoyed a seven-year playing career as a linebacker, suiting up for the then-Los Angeles Raiders (1985-88), the then-Phoenix Cardinals (1989-90) and the San Francisco 49ers (1992). Also played the 1992 season with the Montreal Machine of the then-World League of American Football.
Twin brother, Raleigh, also attended Tennessee and enjoyed a 16-year NFL career, including two seasons in Green Bay (1999-2000).
President of the ‘McKenzie Foundation,’ a non-profit youth foundation in Knoxville.
A two-way star as a prep at Austin East High School in Knoxville, was valedictorian of his 1981 graduating class.
Reggie McKenzie enters his 25th year in the NFL and his 18th season as a member of the Packers’ personnel department. Since he joined the team’s front office in 1994, Green Bay’s 170 regular-season wins over that period rank tied for third most with Indianapolis, trailing only Pittsburgh (172) and New England (180). Also in McKenzie’s tenure, the Packers have captured seven division titles, three conference championships and Super Bowls XXXI and XLV.
A former player, coach and now personnel executive, McKenzie oversees Green Bay’s scouting efforts of all professional football leagues, including the NFL, CFL and Arena Football League, as well as all other pro leagues and international players. He also plays an integral role in judging the Packers’ current players and evaluating potential free agents across the league. McKenzie is heavily involved in all of the team’s moves on a daily basis, including all tryouts and transactions.
During the season, McKenzie provides advance scouting reports on upcoming opponents, working closely with Head Coach Mike McCarthy and his staff. He also contributes to the scouting of college prospects, making school visits in both the fall and spring, and works in conjunction with General Manager Ted Thompson in preparation for the annual draft.
He was promoted to director – football operations in 2008 after serving 10 years as the Packers’ director of pro personnel. A former NFL linebacker for seven seasons (1985-90, 1992), the 48-year-old McKenzie had been promoted to director of pro personnel by then-Executive Vice President/General Manager Ron Wolf in May 1997 after originally joining the Packers as a pro personnel assistant in 1994.
Chosen by Wolf as a 10th-round selection out of the University of Tennessee in 1985 by the then-Los Angeles Raiders, McKenzie became an immediate starter on defense and went on to win all-rookie honors. After four years (1985-88) with the Raiders, McKenzie spent two injury-plagued seasons (1989-90) with the then-Phoenix Cardinals and one year (1992) with the San Francisco 49ers.
Prior to signing with the 49ers, he played with the World League’s Montreal Machine in the spring of 1992. While out of football in 1991, McKenzie spent a season as a defensive coach for Dorsey High School in south central Los Angeles.
In 1993, McKenzie returned to Tennessee and served as an assistant under head coach Philip Fulmer. That year, the Volunteers appeared in the Florida Citrus Bowl and landed one of the nation’s top recruiting classes, highlighted by QB Peyton Manning. While back in Knoxville, McKenzie also pursued a master’s degree in education administration.
Born in Knoxville, Tenn., on Feb. 8, 1963, McKenzie earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration with an emphasis in personnel management at Tennessee. A two-way football star at Austin East High School in Knoxville, McKenzie was valedictorian of his 1981 graduating class. His twin brother, Raleigh, also attended Tennessee and enjoyed a 16-year NFL career, including his final two seasons with Green Bay (1999-2000), before he retired in 2001.
McKenzie and his wife, June, a Green Bay attorney, have two daughters, Jasmin, 19, who attends Wheaton College in Illinois and Mahkayla, 17, who will enroll at Duke University in the fall. He also has two sons, Reginald Kahlil, 14, and Jalen Elijah, 12. In his spare time, McKenzie enjoys spending time with his family and assisting with youth sports in the Green Bay area.

Reggie McKenzie hired as GM?!
It’s hard to see how this is anything but something good.
This is pretty much what we’ve been waiting for.
Reggie McKenzie has zero experience as a general manager but there isn’t a football team on the planet that’s going to let a good general manager go any more than you’re going to get a good QB through a trade.
Sometimes new general managers work out and sometimes they don’t.
I always kind of pulled for Matt Millen to succeed because he was a good player for the Nation but he just didn’t work out in Detroit.
Here’s a guy who started out on the bottom rung of a good organization and has risen up steadily through merit and one thing I like in particular is that he’s been with them for awhile.
Reggie is primed to be a great general manager and is about the best choice you could make.
If Ron Wolfe says he’s a good judge of talent, then he probably is.
Seems like Reggie McKenzie is going to make us proud as long as Mark Davis gave him the power that any GM needs.
If he didn’t then Reggie might get into a spitting contest with Hue.

True story, at the investment firm I worked at in Vegas, our secretary was suprised by her dad on her 21st birthday with a brand new BMW in the parking lot.
She came running back into the office crying because it was blue, not the grey she had asked for, and didn’t want it.
You had to see it to believe it.

Q: How are Raiders run compared to other franchises?
Wolf: I’m not into that really and truly. It’s an area I don’t know that much about. I do know having worked 25 years under Al Davis with the Raiders exactly what that was like when he was in control. The great thing about working for him was the fact that you knew what you were supposed to do and you were given the opportunity to do that. Everything was compartmentalized. I do not know what the structure is today or what it’s like because I left in 1990, but it would seem to me that whole thing has fallen apart from the sense of a structural standpoint. And I think that’s what the need to get back.

last years OLine was the worst in football, Jason and Bruce were running for their lives constatntly.
Jason had what 7-10 sacks this season;
Raiders OLine has been ranked in the middle of the league this season, vastly improved; witha 2nd year (1st year full season) at LT, rookie LG, undersized center, veteran rg who had a comebqack year, RT was limited.
I’m not concerned about our pass protection it improved immensely, and as WRs run crisper routes, Carson builds chemistry, OLine develops, I expect sacks to decrease and TDs to increase.

Trading palmer was simply what i hope mackenzi will do. I dont really expect it to happen, but i think it could get us a second round pick. You never know ther could be a team like minny that beleives that palmer would be an upgrade and worth a first rounder. They after all still think ponder is better than webb, so i wouldnt consider them football geniuses. i dobt that any team would see palmer worth a 1st rounder especially after that pathetic game footage he put together this year, you know 3 games with 3 or more picks, in only 8 starts

Isn’t it simply fair to say that Glo was more comfortable in year 2 as the Raider starting QB?
More comfortable with the WRs and the playbook, so he played faster?
Why isn’t that same progression possible for Palmer?
You want to continue to fall back on Palmer’s history? Campbell’s history was no where near as good as Palmer’s was.
No way in heck Campbell comes back to the Raiders. That ship has sailed. So to suggest trading Palmer and going back to the scrapheap for a QB or starting Pryor is just plain silly mayne.

A lot of Palmer haters hanging their hats on the INT numbers. How about QB rating? Campbell had a season average of 84.2 for his six, Palmer had a season average of 80.5 for his ten.
Ah, but wait, Palmer’s average was driven down by his 1st KC game (17.3) and the GB game (42.6). Palmer had four different games in which he topped 100 in QB rating, including a 125 rating playing in SD.
Campbell’s high for the season was 108. In his other four games, the highest he got was 86.
Each QBs four best games
Palmer: 125 SD, 108 Viks, 113 Det, 103 SD II.
Campbell: 108 Buf, 86 Det, 82 NYJ, 82 Cle
QB rating tells the tale, as does the fact that Palmer posted a better completion percentage for the year.
Jason took good care of the ball, but he wasn’t the kind of QB who takes over a game. You might think the price was too high for Palmer, but he DID have those kind of games in 2011 and MIGHT be that kind of QB for the Raiders.

@inonewordraider true dat. DMAC would help take the focus off any QB.

JCampbell rarely, if ever, stepped up into a collapsing pocket and fired a bullet like CPalmer does with regularity. It’s part of what makes JCampbell so MADDENing to watch sometimes…not letting the ball go on time was just another part, and they’re interconnected.
JCampbell’s pocket presence is nowhere near as keen as Palmer’s. I like Campbell a ton, but objective eyes can see which QB has more talent, and who puts it to good use more regularly.
In 2012, CPalmer throws for 3,700+ Yds with 27+ TD’s & no more than 13 Int’s.

Plunk came in with a lot of promise, just like Palmer. Plunk struggled throughout his NFL career until he came to the Raiders as a backup for Dan Pastorini. Pastorini got hurt, Plunk to the rescue and is two super-bowls history.
Because of the era he played in, Plunk didn’t add up the numbers, but had all the intangibles to be a champ. Palmer on the other hand, has had all the hype, had success early and has numbers, but has also regressed, the most important thing is unlike Plunk Palmer has all the intangibles to be a chump.

Speaking of the man from Sonora, California.
Palmer is more like Pastorini than Plunk. Pastorini was a lot tougher though.

I think that Campbell had the respect of a lot of the Raiders players, as well he should.
Hue pissed a lot of those guys off because he acted like the injury to Campbell was an opportunity to get a guy that he really wanted.
Hence, Hue lost a bunch of respect among his players. Hence Hue loses his job.
++++++++++++++++++++++
What respect Hue may have lost, I think happened when he cut Hagan for I don’t know whosyourmamma, but I do know huesyourdaddy.

Uh, no. It is becoming more and more obvious to every American that the conservative agenda is what has ruined this country. See the fact that the conservatives would rather tank the country than give Beohner a tax cut three weeks ago which would revive the economy. Sucks to be you as usual.

WHAT…..QUARTERBACK….WAS >……GOING…..TO…..BE AVALABLE……WITH ANY ABILITY…….TO ……WIN GAMES…..?
N O N E
WHAT…QUARTERBACK….IN THE DRAFT COULD WE HAVE GOTTEN at 15 or 17?
N O N E
How many franchise QB’s were available as free agents next year
N O N E. Peyton Manning WASNT COMING TO OAKLAND NEXT SEASON!!
Campbell would’ve been back by the San Diego game, and we wouldve been out of playoff contention with Kyle Boller or Kyle Orton as the quarterback
END THREAD
I know Carson throws picks…. I know we gave up too much…you make the assumption that playoff QBs grow on trees, THEY DONT!!!!!!!!!!!

Florio was on PFT saying a power struggle is going to ensue in Oakland if they dont work together quickly. A Todd Haley-Scott Pioli situation, and we know Jackson will chime in on the media a lot…going to be an interesting press conference on Tuesday.

JC is the type o QB that can get us IN the playoffs.
CP3 is the type of QB that wins us a SB.
We’ve seen the best of JC WITH Dmac.
We have no seen the best of CP3 AND he hasnt played with DMAC 1 game.
Get over it Hue and Carson haters, they give u th best chance to win!!
January 6th, 2012 at 5:41 pm
Shortly after the press conference, you will hear of the termination of Hue Jackson. Let the cleaning begin and let’s get some winners in the house to coach and raise the level of play from our players.
McKensie to Jackson: ” I hear your pissed.”
Jackson: “You have no idea how pissed I am.”
McKensie: “Well, you’re about to be pissed even more.”
January 6th, 2012 at 5:43 pm
Temper the enthusiasm fellas. A GREAT hire, but this mess will take 3-4 years at least to turn around.
(Recover from CP3 fiasco, give away draft picks, re-build O line and Defensive line et al…)

And one more thing- can we please get a coach that’s not a meterosexual who goes to the nail salon each week? How does that make a tream want to be a bully, when your coach primps himself like a wuss?

If Hue isn’t willing or doesn’t want to work with McKenzie, that would be just a plain dumb move by Hue. He would lose his job as a head coach and he would go back and become a QB coach or OC again and never be given a shot as a head coach again?
Hue is on record saying he will work with any GM or Boss that has the same vision as he does and that is…..TO WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP.
McKenzie and his new personnel men and Hue need to focus on fixing some player contracts to create cap space, and deciding whether or not they want to switch D schemes to a 3-4 and which DC they need to bring in.
January 6th, 2012 at 6:37 pm
With a full offseason and training camp, and (hopefully) healthier skill set players to work with, I think it’s fair to expect that Carson’s best football in S and B is yet to come.

Yes!. I´m with Palmer starting next season, even if Hue is out of the team.

How about Gruden coming back? He’s on the market. How sweet would that be?

Finally able to post via android, been a while
Finally a GM!
I say if hue wants to stay maybe Reggie keeps him as OC only!

Palmer trade was stupid. Raiders gave up a first and second pick for four wins. Any idiot should have known the raiders were not going to make it to the super bowl with that shockingly bad defense. If they really wanted Palmer then wait for the off season when you would be able to get him for a lot less. That trade has really hurt the raiders for the next 2 years or more. Just think if they did not make the trade they would have gotten no more than 6 wins and therefore a top 10 pick….That pick would have been a potential impact player!!! That trade was horrible. I would fire Hue just because that trade shows such bad judgment. He had a responsibility to the organization and he made the grade of an “F”. I will say he is a good offensive coordinator though.
