Could be a re-interview for Hue

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Saturday, January 7th, 2012 at 1:53 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Didn’t see the ESPN report where Chris Mortensen speculated Hue Jackson could be moved aside by new general manager Reggie McKenzie in favor of Green Bay defensive assistant Winston Moss. It was picked up by Profootballtalk.com and apparently was said over the air because ESPN hasn’t seen fit to give it a headline on its Web site.

The PFT headline reads “Reggie McKenzie will have the power to fire Hue Jackson” . . . of course he does. McKenzie doesn’t take the job otherwise. He has been a candidate for GM before and it was a matter of time before he got hired. There’s no way he accepts any job without the ability to hire and/or fire his coach.

The fact is, once McKenzie came aboard, Jackson was essentially re-interviewing for the job he got a year ago. While GMs like the idea of hiring their own guy, don’t discount the fact that Jackson has some distinct advantages over an outside candidate and McKenzie knows it. He’s passionate about the organization, knows the roster and already has been implementing a system of offense for the past two years.

He already started the process of rebuilding it for Carson Palmer, who will be the quarterback for the foreseeable future.

It’s just as easy to speculate Jackson will be retained as it is to assume he’ll be dismissed. He’s got one of 32 NFL head coaching jobs, and it’s not like he’ll be in great demand for another if he butts heads with McKenzie over power. It’s more likely he’ll get on board with McKenzie and relish the opportunity to coach the team and work with someone who will rebuild the infrastructure of the organization.

Bottom line is it’s McKenzie’s call, but a lot of this is up to Jackson and his willingness to work with the general manager rather than feel he has been stripped of power. Following the Green Bay model, McKenzie will stay out of Jackson’s way when it comes to on-field stuff. Mike McCarthy has input with the Packers but ultimately it’s Ted Thompson’s call when it comes to player acquisition, the draft, contracts, etc.

As much as Jackson was willing to take on more within the organization, as he said following the season-ending loss to the Chargers, the McKenzie hiring could be the best thing that could have happened for his career. It’d be better for the organization if McKenzie gives Jackson at least a year to maintain a semblance of continuity unless he thinks they simply can’t work together.

BROWN A FINALIST

Will the third time be a charm for Hall of Fame finalist Tim Brown?

The guess here is no, simply because from what I’ve gleaned from talking to people involved in that process is that numbers for wide receivers don’t carry enough weight because the game changed so dramatically to favor the pass. Without a signature moment in a Super Bowl or having played for more winning teams, it’ll be a tough go for Brown.

    Lefty the Libtard,
The NYG defense held a team to 0 points in the playoffs. That is NFL defense I’d love to have in Oakland.

Q Bert, oops, i mean Huebert needs to be bounced…

Dude is a clown of an HC, how many Brain Dead penalties did we take on Offense this year?
12 men inthe huddle, delay of game penalties?
Too Many and it copst us the opportunity to play a game at HOME today….

I had DHB from the beginning. I saw the potential locked up in this kid. And you aint seen nothing yet! Next year, barring injury, his stat line will be even better (say, 50% more production).

And now I’m harping BRUCE CAMPBELL while the crows begin to speak. Different story. Same rhyme

NY may be all GB wants to deal with next week. NY has some momentum they going to take with them to GB.

If GB got their ass knocked sideways I wouldn’t be at all surprised…

Hue Jackson was so high on Bruce CAmpbell he inactivated him every game after Al died.

McKenzie will have no use for guys who are healthy scratches on Sundays.

I once looked at EVERY starting G in the NFL, and I could only find ONE G who is starting in the NFL (not due to injury) who never played his first two years.

    His name?

    Cooper Carlisle

  • http://ggeden.blogspot.com/ GG

DHB was our most productive but I can see why and areas where his ceiling is limited.

If one were to keep DHB, he is clearly a YAC receiver, have him run routes long across the middle, short slants and curls.

He’s not a sure-handed down-field threat like Ford, Moore and even Murphy, catching cleanly with hands or tracking balls overhead.

Remember I’m a fan of DHB, but i can see that, and how much the D needs upgrading.

Just saying all this to pose a possibility and hypothetical.

  • SnB offense defense specialteams

However, I would shake my head at that….but given the Raiders have no draft picks…I have to accept that most of the bums that got this team to the point that they are watching Tim Tebow in about 20 minutes will probably still be here.

Falcons two playoff loses were to the team that went to the Super Bowl.

Decent history for the Giants sake.

  • SnB offense defense specialteams

THe only open question on DHB, assuming Hue Jackson is allowed back, is how many snaps he gets when Ford and Moore are healthy.

Many posters here seem to think that Ford and Moore are the 1-2 guys and that them being out hurt the offense more than having DHB.

I personally like DHB now. He stays healthy and proved to be productive on the field.

  • TerrapinRaider

We’ll see JFB. I’m tellin you. Big Boss Bruce Campbell will be in the starting lineup next year. hahaha

  • Just Fire Baby

When we drafted DHB, I said he would be a better NFL player than Jamarcus or McFadden. Armond can vouch for this.

I bashed DHB all last year and the beginning of this year, but I should have just trusted my initial instincts.

  • http://repealitnow.org MistaBrown

DHB’s best attribute is running after the catch. Hue needs to dump off more short balls to him. On longer routes he looks like he just started playing football last week. He is terrible on slants though.

    DHB is like Chinese arithmetic…

I hopw the steelers rip teblow a new one i cant stand the donkeys and i cant believe we gave them chumps a free ride to the playoffs damn shame how bad our defense is to let a team march 99 yards! In chrunch time! Pitiful

  • http://ggeden.blogspot.com/ GG

Terrapin, you werent the only one either right from the start. I know I was too. And I know a few others who were also. But we were the minority for sure.

I still like DHB very much, the right mindset and work ethic, love the toughness, etc. But just posing the question about converting some value from one area due to so much needed in another area.

Pitiful to say the least….someone has to fall on the sword for this one.

I might have to step away from the TV……the Raiders gave them this opportunity.

GAve up almost 300 yards rushing to those losers at home

Giants were behind teh Raiders at one point.

Won 4 of last 5 and the one loss was a 38-35 gm to Green Bay.

    Head Coach matters.

    Raiders….

Lost 4 of last 5 and had a raggedy OT win against KC

I hope he is Terrapin, so we get something out of that draft pick.

I just watched him stink to high-heaven in both preseasons, get hurt often, and wear sweats every weekend.

Haven’t seen anything that says he is starting material, but maybe it clicks in year 3.

We had a week to prepare for Tebow as well, and still made him look like a Pro Bowler.

That should have cost Chuck his job immediately, and put Hue on the hot seat, IMO.

  • http://ggeden.blogspot.com/ GG

My big Raider man-crush at the moment is Pryor. Hoping Reggie likes him enough to give him a chance and that Pryor pulls his head in more and develops, demands the starting job thru merit.

  • TerrapinRaider

The only area where DHB ceiling is limited, per say, is I’m not sure how high he can naturally jump making toss ups potentially problematic. But DHB has unnatural speed, size and athletism to be killer on the field.

Last game dude had 9 receptions for 130yds~!! Finished the year #18 amoung all NFL WRs (Crabdiva #28). For those claiming he is only a YAC WR for short routes …LOOK AT THE STATS MAN!!! Dude averaged over 15ypc (Crabdiva, 12)!!! Sure he’s not deep like Moore or Ford but damn man, 15ypc is no slouch for the number of catches he had.

Next year will be even better for him. This year was his vindication. Next year will be his triumph.

  • SnB offense defense specialteams

Hue is on that HOT SEAT! yes sir!

  • SnB offense defense specialteams

DHB is cool. I was hard on the kid, but he made substantive leaps this year.

He’s good to go. Still has to work on his hands…but he gets open now…he is in the short passing game now.

You don’t get rid of YOUNG players that bring production.

  • VanHeathen

Watching Floyd pointing at Lito before the snap, while looking at Rivers in the 4th qtr, makes me sick…
Why couldn’t we put ANYBODY else on him at that point?
DVD, could of at least challenged him for the bal, instead of Lito looking like a child playing with men…Shouldn’t teh HC at least have an IDEA wha tthe D is doing, instead of taking of his headset and watching us LOSE?

  • TerrapinRaider

I don’t know bro …you may have to rewatch those preseason games. Big Boss Bruce Campbell has the BOSS on the field …his knee bend wasn’t there yet, but when he got his hands on you it was over. Dude was manhandling players out there.

The NFL Today – Charlie Casserly says he spoke to Hue’s agent. Hue has not been fired, but McKenzie will evaluate entire organization this week.

    Not exactly a glowing endorsement.

I’m just not into these playoffs. It seems like a ripoff for me. The Raiders have the talent to beat most of these teams. Its a damn shame.

You can’t start Moore & Ford imho. Lineup too small – almost like Washington Redskin football. You have to start DHB and rotate the 3 of them. You need a force on the line.
