Tice the latest reported candidate

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Tuesday, January 17th, 2012 at 7:33 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Mike Tice, anyone?

The current offensive coordinator of the Chicago Bears and former head coach of the Minnesota Vikings is the latest coach the Raiders have expressed an interest in, according to the Chicago Tribune, which reported Oakland had requested permission to speak to Tice.

Tice coached the Vikings from the end of the 2001 season through the 2005 season and had a record of 33-34.

Chicago’s offensive line coach, Tice was elevated to offensive coordinator following the season by Lovie Smith, replacing Mike Martz.

The Raiders have made no public comment on their coaching search since general manager Reggie McKenzie took over on Jan. 6.

Well Reggie must be a genius.

He is going out interviewing the WORST possible coaching candidates so when he finally hires Moss everyone will be happy.

    When the winning coaches are arrogant and condescending, it doesnt play too well with assistants. I remember the Dolphins didnt even come at the guy, and he said;
“I’m too old and too expensive” – he said that in jest, but i mean, thats not who you want running a team – Billick just happened to luck into the greatest defensive team in history, like Gruden lucked into the 2nd greatest defensive team in history.

Notice; Their both on television, and same with Cowher. You have to be able to nurture egos not yell at people. You have to inspire people, delegate stuff to great assistants. A very collaborative process. That ego-stuff doomed guys like Haley and McDaniels when they were head coaches.

There are two major areas to judge McKenzie on:

Hiring the head coach, and strength of roster. As far as the latter, he hasn’t even had one draft or FA period yet. No way you can judge yet. As far as the HC, he should have sealed Moss by now. So there’s minor disappointment there, but until whatever coach he chooses turns out to suck, there’s no way to call that, either.

Again, let’s not lose sight on the side that has plagued this team for the last 9 years, and cost us the playoffs this year.

Defense, we need a Defensive HC, it makes sense and I would be shocked to see us go Offense.

Either Reggie is Smart OR Mark is calling the shots and we go Offense, we will see who gets to hire “His” guy shortly.

  199. Sullivan44 Says:

You know, if Mark turns out to be a cheap skate, his ownership really could be worse than Al’s. Al only cheap skated coaches. So far, Mark seems to be doing the same, if my suspicions as to why Winston hasn’t been hired yet are true. If we see Mark lowballing players too? My goodness. Even Al didn’t do that. And the Raiders aren’t one of the wealthier teams in the league.

DKnight, that’s true. But this could still be the reason for the delay. Could be the Yorks just decided to put football in front of politics and profit. Maybe Mark should do the same.

    ^^^^^^^^
I knew this would happen if they fired Hue prematurely. There is a lack of talented assistants out there, that can become good to great NFL head coaches right now. Slim Pickens, unless you bring in a proven head coach like a Gruden or Fisher.

Moss is the only one out of all these yahoos that are being interviewed or considered by McKenzie, that has at least some upside.

I also like Aaron Kromer from the Saints. He was a former offensive line coach under Gruden here with the Raiders.

Would Harbaugh ever trade away future for Palmer had he been our coach. I’d say no since he would have had a viable option #2 at QB instead of Boller who lets face it was handed the job by Hue due to their love test from Raven days. That alone could have been a reason to sack Hue: Nepotism!

And now we are interviewing all B list candidates instead. Really?

Hwn — How long did that option last after it came back? About as long as the run-n-shoot will.

The WC Offense is about as close to run-n-shoot as you’re gonna see…except for long-run versions of some teams’ 2-minute drills.

Run-n-shoot: I think back to when Jim Kelly could’ve been a Raider. He would’ve been something in Black and Silver. Fockin’ Pete Roszelle.

And if anyone wants to argue that the rosters Millen handed him were packed with talent, well I need a good laugh. And he has head coaching experience. Mike Tice did a pretty good job with the Bears offense. That team was in the NFC Championship game the year before, was 7-3 when they walked into the Oakland Coliseum this year, and had just whipped the Dischargers 31-13 the week before. If they didn’t lose their Pro Bowl Q, who knows what would have happened. Janikowsky had 6 count ‘em SIX FG’s in that game. Why? Because Jackson obviously didn’t know that TD’s equaled 6 points.

All of that traces back to Mike Tice’s time as head coach from 2001-’05. Yes, the team performed alright record-wise under Tice’s tutelage, but it never had a double-digit win season, and Tice brought all kinds of negative press to Vikings.

This team in a horrible stadium with half sold out games will have no chance competing financially or athletically. That’s why I think he needs to hire not a retread but either established guy like Gruden who fans love or a very polished assistant coach like Moss.

I was under the impression this was a decisive guy who knows what he wants.

    Either:

-He does NOT know what he wants or…

-He’s jacking a lot of people around bringing people in for interviews who he has no intention of hiring.

I hope Raiders stay in Oakland but the construction is moving fast in walnut,CA..

  299. JB Says:

All these “extra” interviews are more than likely scouting interviews for potential OC’s & DC’s. That way when Reggie hires Moss, he can give Moss short lists of “Reggie acceptable” names of OC & DC coaches for Moss to consider & hire. I’m sure Reggie is approaching it that way and is most likely seeing if they’d be interested in the opportunities if offerred. All this means is that once Moss is hired, Coordinators are going to be coming closely behind. Sounds like an organized approach.

  300. ghostraiders Says:

Sure he can and apparently is. He’s going to give an “acceptable” list of guys that have shown interest and Moss can hire anyone of them he chooses. he difference between Al & Reggie is hat Al would decide on one and hire him. Reggie is letting the new HC hire anyone he considers as acceptable. Welcome to the corporate world. That’s how it works.

  306. EMRaiders Says:

Al McKenzie was supposed to be a great talent evaluator. These past few names thrown out there are not exactly “great coaching talent”. Something doesn’t make sense here.

Either Wolf, Madden and a few others had no idea what they were talking about when recommending McKenzie, or McKenzie is just buying some time before hiring a real prospect out there. Like some of you mentioned, there’s also the chance that $$ is an issue, which wouldn’t be a surprise.

Anyway, If he does hire one of these have-beens then we all will have some serious thinking to do about how capable McKenzie really is for the job.

Nothing has happened yet though. Let’s keep our fingers crossed and hope that BigMac surprises us all.

Understand your point and what you are saying. The question I guess may have to do with “are the currently under contract” and “if they are offered a DC/Asst. I’m sure there is more to all these different interviews than just building up his Mileage Plus account miles.

Reggie didn’t impress me as a person unable to make a decision. I do think he’s a man of few words publicly. He holds things close to the vest – but that’s a Raider way of doing things anyway. I just believe he’s got his own agenda and is working it feverishly. He’s all over the place seeing lots of different faces. There has to be a reason why. We just don’t know what it is for sure.

  314. Try Some Reality Says:

Mike Tice, seriously? Does Reggie have his head firmly planted?

  315. JB Says:

Yes, Greg Williams the DC for NO left and went to work for Fisher at the Rams. I think it was the Rams and not Miami.

  316. VanHeathen Says:

Reggie is gathering Intel from the other candidates about how they would use the talent he has at his disposal…it’s the ONLY time he’s allowed to do this by the league and he might as well get as much feedback as he can.
This IS a move Al perfected for years during his way too often coaching searches…
He might as well take his time withthe coaching search, it’s not like he’s going to be worried about drafting on the first day…

  317. JB Says:

I think that pretty much all of our Asst. coach contracts are up now. That let’s them look & talk to whomever they want. That’s what happened to Sanjai Li. That is typical for most teams. Asst. Coach contract are usually not long term in nature.

  318. EMRaiders Says:

    Here’s a crazy conspiracy theory…

What if Al had a plan to make the team suck just enough so that he could move it to LA or wherever using the excuse that tickets were not selling where he was. He almost had the plan playing out to perfection when all of a sudden his number is called by the great ol’ mighty. On top of his passing, Hue all of a sudden starts to make visible progress and the fans see it and tickets start selling, paired with a brilliant (and desperate) marketing strategy of 2 for 1 tickets, the games are being sold out for the first time in a long time. But his son takes over, and in the will, there’s instructions in detail of how to carry the plan and that it must be carried out. So step one, fire the HC. Step two, hire McKenzie, who had been singled out by Al a long time ago and was part of the plan. Hence why Mark not interviewing anyone else, hiring Reggie almost instantly, then Reggie looking at all this sorry excuses for coaches as the next HC.

And just like that, we are back to a 4-12 season, home games not being sold out, and the team moving by spring of 2014.

Current HC fired, Reggie and Mark hire a legit HC, we make playoffs for the first time in 12 years, and win Superbowl.

Al legacy lives on. And he did it his way. Even from the grave.

  319. djohnnyg Says:

Just kind of deflating to see these lame-o names.

I was wanting Hue back for another shot with a new DC to see what he could do, but excited at the same time to see the upgrade we would most surely get.

When I see names like THIS…Mike Tice? Marty Morninwheg? Dom Capers?

We just assume Reggie knows what he’s doing.

I hope he does, and there’s a reason behind these lamers being trotted out.

  320. JB Says:

    EMRaiders

Right now your theory is a viable as any others on here including mine. Although, in my opinion, your conspiracy approach is out there a ways but I doubt I could get that many people to agree to any one thing & stick to it. But WTH, write a book. It could be a cult best seller.

  321. Try Some Reality Says:

First Mornhingweg, now Tice. Are we interviewing the worst head coaches of all time?

    So who’s next?

    Brad Childress?
    Dave Shula?
    Butch Davis?
    Jim Zorn?
    Dave Campo?
    Wade Phillips?
    Joe Bugel?
    Rod Marinelli?
    Cam Cameron?

  322. al d. davis Says:

All the HC prospects McKenzie has “interviewed” are neckenschell plunks (German for notable unnotables), too long in tooth, recycled losers with losing records, or are unknowns without reknown: what have you done for us lately Winston Moss?

Churning through the garbage is not the Raider way, at least it wasn’t till the master of disaster, Stink AL, made it our way the past 10 yrs.

My vote for HC is Rich Gannon. Supremely talented, practical, pragmatic, highly intelligent, possessing extreme football moxy, strict disciplinarian, and work addicted.

C’mon McKenzie, cloning GB is not the way. Doing something not yet known in football is the Raider way and way to dynasty. Rich Gannon: would you know a diamond if you held it in your hand ?

  323. JB Says:

Some reasons Reggie is all over the place:

    • Is checking on HC,OC & DC interest
    • Is checking on trade interest for some of our players
    • Is checking on trade availability of others players
    • Is building up his hotel and airline miles
    • His office in Alameda is not complete yet so needed to meet at the other guy’s place
    • Just wanted to say hi and see some old acquaintances
    • Just wanted the Raider blog people to go bug-schit trying to figure out what and why he’s doing what he’s doing
    • Just because…

  324. EMRaiders Says:

lol JB… I know it is waaaayyyy out there, but so is the thought of bringing in any of the guys McKenzie is interviewing these days. So I figured, what the heck…

    ————————————-

I love the Palmer trade, sorry. Not sure why it’s so accepted as a mistake and everyone is trying to assign blame.

Not long ago I posted a list of the 17th overall selections in the first and second rounds of the draft over the last 10 seasons (our pick in this year’s draft would’ve been No. 17). The only 2 out of 20 who you might, might want over Palmer would be Josh Freeman and DeSean Jackson. And even those are debatable. Palmer was clearly better than the other 18 players picked in those two spots.

  366. bcz24 Says:

The only difference Chris is the fact that the 17th overall pick in this years draft would cost us about 3 million a year. There is value in #1 picks that can’t be compared to those of the past, we aren’t talking about 70 million dollar contracts anymore.

I think Palmer will be fine. Most people are resigned to hating the trade because they hate Hue, so they will hate anything associated with him. They will probably hate DHB and DMC next year too because Hue coaxed some good things out of them.

I like what Reggie is doing, he is interviewing just about everyone he can get his hands on. He is building raports in the coaching community. Most of these guys are nothing more than to have a relationship, and an idea about a guy, for coordinators. I doubt many of them are serious candidates. IMO Moss probably already has the job, but Mark was skewered in the media for not interviewing anyone else for Reggies job, so Reggie isn’t making that mistake.

  368. hwnrdr Says:

I was with Hue on that trade for Palmer after JC went down because we all know Boller wouldn’t have done crap for us! However, I didn’t like how he handled it…di we give up too much? It’s looking like it, but like you said Bcz…if he does take us to the dance…it wil be ok! Winning does cure all!

  369. edward teach Says:

I for one am glad Hue is gone. Didn’t see him as a head coach when he was hired (and posted it), and he didn’t change my mind once he had the job.

I am glad we have Palmer, though. He’s legit, and there aren’t a whole lot of legitimate QBs sitting around waiting for a phone call, especially in the middle of the season.

RM said what a lot of us feel about the trade; we probably gave up too much, but that’s the cost of doing business, especially given the circumstances.

I don’t know why Hue would even feel the need to justify that trade. Palmer has made some unbelievable throws. It has been years since we saw a QB throw a deep ball and as a spectator, we just assume it is on target, as opposed to keeping our fingers crossed preying it doesn’t get intercepted.

I know the draft picks were costly, but I would still take a sure-thing in Palmer at QB than a risky QB pick…assuming we all agree we needed a QB.

We can find a RB as good as him that doesn’t have glass ankles and toes.

Hue was 16th in red zone offense, 8-8, and blew key games at the end of the season with abysmal play calling, particularly in the red zone. Then he blamed the players for it. Toned it down only after he realized he was blowing future employment opportunities.

Only guy I’m missing is our lost receivers coach. Did a hell of a job w Ford, Moore, and even DHB. They should have kept him. Our receivers have sucked for years until he got here.

  380. nycraider Says:

Chris in Ny and other Hue supporters. Did you honestly see good HC qualities in Hue or did you admire his offensive mindset. I think Hue is a good offensive coordinator but didn’t have the makeup to be a successful HC. It was clear that Hue’s mindset was he was in charge of the offense and he left Chuck B on his own. Chuck B is horrible but a good HC has to be responsible for both sides of the ball. I also question Hues ability to make fast decisions. He has a good gameplan on offense but in the heat of the moment I think he had issues making decisions. Against the Lions we scored a defensive touchdown and he didn’t have basic decision making process to go for 2. Then at the end of the 1st half against SD, we have the ball at the 40 with no timeouts with 11 seconds left and he pots for 1 more play versus kicking a fg. There are other examples but these stick out in my mind. IMO without being there , I feel he lost the lockeroom. In the end , Mark Davis may have influenced Reggie to let Hue go but my instinct tells me that Madden and Wolf felt the same way. In the end, Any first year coach who doesn’t have a full training camp, loses his qb midyear and a top 5 rb when healthy, goes 8-8 but still loses his job has to have major ego issues or other flaws that management couldn’t live with.

  381. M Lonetree Says:

a season ago media talking heads were touting Todd Haley and Raheem Morris as coaching geniuses. (having the easiest schedules in the NFL is a seldom-mentioned part of genius). within a year they were both fired for ineptitude.
Jason Garrett, THE hot commodity a couple of years back…ices his own kicker to lose out on a playoff berth.

if Reggie wants to patiently sift through all the names and coaches it seems wise ss few of them are what they are portrayed to be from moment to moment.
then again, it’s all a crapshoot.

what’re the odds that Oaktown will have a primetime game in Cincinnati next season? The return of Carson.

  399. 1960AutumnWind Says:

I have been watching this search and I have some ideas and concerns:

    1. While we do not know all that went on it seems to me Al Saunders did a really good job with an offense that saw a lot of injuries and adversity. It would be nice to get a DC or D Assistant Coach that would defer and allow Saunders to stay on as well as all the assistants except Lal. Saunders is an experienced play caller and probably would have done a better job than Hue as well (i.e throw the bomb on 4th and 1 while you are trying to run down the clock and have a terrible defense late in a game). I think it would be stupid to blow up an above average offense that is starting to jell just because you like the West Coast Offense!

    2. The DC and D Assistants I have heard so far are Allen, Moss, and other Green Bay Defensive staff. I believe Todd Bowles is that as well. I like Bowles because the team was playing hard at the end of the season and I think Miami plays a 3/4 which I think we would be ok to switch into with a couple of additions and subtractions. Jack Del Rio might agree to that as well because Saunders is so respected and that would allow him to focus on the defense.

  400. cfrylopez Says:

Mark Davis said #1 that “we are trying to build a stadium here” meaning Oakland. Then he said” if we can’t build a Stadium in Oakland, we’ve been researching other sites in Northern California and talking with people in Southern California. If we can’t get a stadium build in Oakland than LA is a possibility, anywhere is a possibility.” LA times is doing a poll to see how many people want the Raiders in L.A. The good news for REAL Oakland Raiders fans is that the people developing the New LA stadium want some control & ownership of the Team they bring in & the Davis family will never give up any control of the Raiders. But Real OAKLAND Raider Fans must stop this LA momentum. Vote No to bringing the Raiders to LA.

    Regarding 402

It was Mark Davis that had to pull the trigger on that trade all Hue did is hand him the gun. I am sure Hue used his connections to soften up Cincy for the trade but it was Mark that had to make that decision. I am sure Hue pushed Mark hard for this and rightly knew the season was over with Boller. There is no way a Coach was given cart blanc to take on that kind of contract and give up those kind of picks. What kind of makes me mad is that our back up was so utterly useless to put us in a position to have to do such a thing and that falls on Hue whould be given latitude on the Backup QB.

DHB is still figuring out how to catch using hands as opposed to his body.

The one thing I don’t think the WRs got good enough at was separating from coverage. They learned how to run routes, but it seemed the would run the route as it was drawn up on paper (which was good), but to be great, they have to run the route properly AND get separation when in tight coverage. Great receivers are not content with simply running the pattern correctly.

Al davis screwed a lot of things up… he should have had a GM in place a long time ago.. but lets be honest .. if it was al davis bringing in these NFL retreads and an NFL meathead in tice. ..people would be ripping into him right now… like I said. . Reggie is losing credibility. .
    ==================

Couldn’t Reggie have taken Hue ‘under his wing’ so to speak and reigned him in a bit, offered some assistance to work together, take the weight of the world of Hues’ shoulders, canned the DC and we’d be prepping for 2012 right now.

Seems to me Mark had an axe to grind.

  443. RaiderRockstar Says:

I don’t know if I’m a believer in Sanjay Lal. Sure our WRs started producing more, but a lot goes into that including O-Line production, a QB knowing the system, a good playbook, etc. I think Ford and Moore already knew how to catch.

Great receivers are not content with simply running the pattern correctly

    ***

    Arj,

excellent points. no excuses for the drops, fumbles and route running by our young wideouts the past few years – unless you want to blame injuries, youth, coaching turnover or changes at QB

At some point these cats just have to ball. Oddly enough though, did you see how poorly the Saints & Packers targets made Brees & Rodgers look last weekend? I was thinking to myself “the Raiders are more talented than that!” but we’re talking about one game, not a career or even a season.

I totally agree with the second post about Edwards. He did not want to come back – it was reported from at least 3 outlets. But why did he not want to come back? Could it be that he felt he was better than KB but was not given a fair shot by Hue? This is what I mean when I say Hue was too comfortable with KB. I do not think we should rush to blame that situation on AD! That may very well be one of the things McKenzie saw when he reviewed the year with Hue that wanted him to move on. I mean Al had his scholarship players but maybe Hue did as well.

  471. 1960AutumnWind Says:

I have no problem with what McKenzie is doing so far. I think in interviewing a guy like McCoy or Allen you are getting perspective of how they see our offense and defense and what they would do to improve it. This is valuable because they game planned us – twice. Secondly, it might be that one of these guys is the next Madden or Gruden and you will not figure that out unless you sit down and talk with them for at least 2-3 hours. I also like interviewing Bowles as he prepared for us and their team tattooed us. More perspective!

Some questions that Reggie can ask

    1. In looking at our offense what improvement in scheme could be implemented to make us more effective.

    2. Would you want to move to the West Coast on offense like wise 3/4 or 4/3 on defense – what personal changes do you think would need to be made.

    3. Would you want to bring your own assistants in on offense or defense and if so who are you thinking about. Note auto fail answer if they say content with Defense.

    and so on….

You’re the one who’s freaking out because the GM is *gasp* TALKING TO COACHES. That’s what a real GM does. Especially a guy who just took over a team that had the same GM for basically its entire existence.

The guy McKenzie brings in will have his hands full. He has to not only replenish the staff of assistant coaches, but find answers at a lot of positions – not only areas that need improving, but deciding whether to keep/cut/restructure/trade certain players on the roster whose salary is going to be a problem in 2012. Then there’s the whole issue of a team that has never had to be accountable before, hasn’t been disciplined, and plays like it.

So when you have a team with as many problems as the Raiders do, why WOULDN’T you interview every possible candidate? If only to go over their ideas, and see what both young AND established coaches around the league think?

You’re just freaking out because you’re an impatient fan. Relax.

This is exactly the problem. You’ve been conditioned by following an Al Davis-run team to freak out at every potential offseason move because Crazy Al was running the team. He’s not anymore.

Good teams – teams that know what it’s like to win – take their time to make decisions. Look at the Colts. They JUST fired Caldwell. The 49ers? They knew Harbaugh was their guy, but they still did other interviews. Were they wasting their time? No. They’re doing what a real organization does – makes deliberate, methodical choices based on gathering all the information they have available to them.

No reason not to interview former head coaches who took over teams that were an absolute mess at the time. After all, the Raiders are exactly that. Would be worth talking to them if only to find out where it went wrong with their former teams.

    ——————-

I agree. I was thinking the same thing. When Nicks jumped up and made the grab from Eli at the end of the first half, my first thought was “Wow” what a grab. Then I thought about it and said, “Isn’t that what a WR is supposed to be able to do?” If the ball doesn’t get batted down, and its catchable if you jump for it, it should be EXPECTED that an NFL WR catches it with their hands? That was the big deal with Ford and Moore. All of a sudden, there were WRs on our team that know how to catch a ball with their hands. The weird thing is, that’s the norm on other teams. Given that these two guys have unbelievable hands, the point about Lal is: Ok they can catch. Now teach them how to get open.

To everyone in such a big hurry. Good coaches are coming and going right now and will be for the next month as Coaches dismiss and retool staffs. Yes we may be missing out on someone but if we wait maybe someone then comes free that was not there before. I would rather wait and get the right HC and also allow Reggie to glean as much info as he can especially from OC’s and DC’s that had success with us this year. Even ones that did well overall and dealt with adversity such as Houston’s staff would be good to talk to. If they have no potential to possibly be considered I do not think that would be fair but it could be Allen, McCoy or Bowles is HC material and we have to do due diligence to figure it out and glean valuable info in the meantime.

Keep in mind that the Vikings’ lease is expired, so all they have to do is notify the league before 2/15 of their intention to move, and they’re gone. Florio personally thinks they’re staying, but the Rams are going back to LA.

I bring all this up because this could be us in a couple of years. Oakland needs to get off their lazy butts and get a stadium deal together NOW, or maybe they don’t deserve to have an NFL team.

I prefer a young dynamic coach that shows promise than an old retread who’s opportunity has come n gone…anyday.. But that’s just my opinion… OK. 531. 1960AutumnWind Says:

One nice thing about Tice is he was involved in game planning us and had to attack our defense etc… especially for the run and pass blocking. They had a tough situation with Cutler going down and he worked with a makeshift OL all season long and got 2k rushing out of it. It would be interesting to hear his perspective of our perceived weak spots and how to fix them. Not sure I would want him as a HC but if he has learned things and changed he could be a distant possibility.

My football, without me, is useless. Without my football, I am useless. I must fire my football true. I must shoot straighter than my enemy who is trying to outscore me. I must score a TD before he can stop me. I will…

My football and myself know that what counts in this war is not the incompletions we fire, the noise of their crowd, nor the INTs we make. We know that it is the TDs that count. We will score…

My football is human, even as I, because it is my life. Thus, I will learn it as a brother. I will learn its weaknesses, its strength, its laces, its accessories, and how it will fly in any weather. I will ever guard it against the ravages of weather and damage as I will ever guard my legs, my arms, my eyes and my heart against damage. I will keep my football clean and ready. We will become part of each other. We will…

Before God, I swear this creed. My football and myself are the offenders of my team. We are the masters of our enemy. We
are the saviors of my Nation.

So be it, until victory is Oakland’s and there is no enemy, and the Lombardi I will raise!

I just hope this clown Mark Davis is ready to shell out real money for a HC (head coach…not hair-cut), unlike Al. It was theoretically successful to have a mid-grade coach when the owner of the team knows football in and out (at least he perceived it that way).

With this guy Mark looking for things like moving the team and getting a new stadium as #1 priority, I just hope he understands that unless you are good at finding a diamond on the rough, which he is not, you get what you pay for at the HC spot. Give McKenzie the budget for a real NFL coach. Perhaps re-tread coaches are going to be brought in because of the budget set for the HC.

I don’t have any confidence in Davis especially after that interview where he couldn’t answer questions and was trying to persuade the interviewer that he was “busy”. Reminded me of the interview with GW BUSH on his ranch after being in office for 3 months but spending only 2 weeks in Washington saying “I’ve been busy, I’ve been making decisions…you don’t have to be in Washington to work”

    No worries, bro.

My only point is that I don’t think it’s ever a waste of time when you have an opportunity to pick the brains of key coordinators throughout the league.

Especially when those coordinators are former coaches, who came into organizations that were a mess, with rosters full of lower-tier players and malcontents.

  563. Kirk Says:

Acknowledging his team’s “lack of focus and concentration,” embattled coach Mike Tice conceded after the Bears game that the controversy surrounding the party had hurt the Vikings’ effort. “If I was to say it didn’t affect us at all,” Tice said, “I’d be lying to you.” Both Tice and his boss, Wilf, a New Jersey real estate developer who purchased the team from Red McCombs for a reported $600 million last May, seem to be grasping for ways to address the team’s multitude of problems. According to one Minnesota player who was present last Friday for Wilf’s “intense,” profanity-laced address to the team, the owner at one point vowed he would discover which players were responsible for planning the boat party and threatened to remove them from the roster.

Since September 2002, when star wideout Randy Moss (who was traded to the Oakland Raiders last March) bumped a traffic officer with his car and later pleaded guilty to two misdemeanors, Minnesota fans have endured a slew of off-the-field embarrassments (box, page 50), including sexual-assault allegations, a ticket-scalping imbroglio involving Tice and some of his assistants, and the introduction of the term Whizzinator into the football lexicon, courtesy of running back Onterrio Smith.

Just when it seemed things couldn’t get more surreal, there came news of the boat party. Stephen Doyle, a Minnesota attorney who represents the cruise company, alleges that his clients witnessed graphic sex acts by a number of passengers, with some crew members invited to participate. (Though it is not clear how many of the 90 or so passengers were Vikings, crew members gave the police the names of 17 players they said they saw during the cruise.) Many Minnesotans are appalled. “Maybe if this happens in L.A. or New York, folks would say this is just another day in the life of an NFL player,” says Dean Johnson, the state’s senate majority leader. “But not in Minnesota. There are still moral expectations here. I never thought I’d live long enough to want to see Randy Moss come back to Minnesota to be a role model.”

Four-time Vikings Pro Bowl center Matt Birk, who was not on the cruise, could only shake his head at his teammates’ having sullied the franchise’s reputation yet again. “We put the fun in dysfunctional,” said Birk, who is on the injured reserve list with a hip ailment. “You look at all the off-the-field stuff that’s gone on over the past few years, and it’s laughable. I think everybody on that boat knows he screwed up, and the only thing I can hope comes out of this is that, with guys having to do some explaining to their wives and dealing with damage to their reputations and perhaps facing criminal penalties, this will scare them straight.”

On Sunday, at Wilf’s behest, NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue flew to Chicago for a 90-minute meeting with the Vikings’ owner. According to league spokesman Greg Aiello, Tagliabue told the owner he had inherited a staff that “lacked discipline, structure and accountability.” (On Sunday the Vikings hired retired FBI agent Dag Sohlberg as the team’s full-time director of security.) Aiello said the NFL is monitoring the situation and that players who took part in the party could face discipline under the league’s personal-conduct policy. He said Tagliabue was “disappointed because [the controversy] impacts on the respect that the public has for the NFL and its players.”

Much larger sample to draw from. If Hue went 8-8 for four straight seasons I don’t think he’d have many defenders, even if he lost McFadden, his QB went down, he was saddled with a terrible DC and the owner died in each of those four seasons.

DECEMBER 15–Four Minnesota Vikings players were charged today with lewd conduct for their roles in a ribald October party boat excursion on Lake Minnetonka. Quarterback Daunte Culpepper and three teammates–Bryant McKinnie, Fred Smoot, and Moe Williams–were each hit with three misdemeanors, according to District Court criminal complaints, copies of which you’ll find below. The complaints offer very explicit details of the alleged behavior of the four athletes (butt groping, sex toy usage, assorted oral favors, topless lap dancing, etc.) during the October 6 floating excursion. A criminal probe by the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office began after crew members complained that some of the booze-soaked party’s 90 guests engaged in public sex romps. The trip was cut short after the boat’s captain became alarmed by the raucous behavior of partygoers. Along with the four Vikings charged, about a dozen other players were reportedly on board during the party, which came during a bye week for the NFL club

But its Mike Tice’s fault that he went 32-33? And he isnt a good coach?

    ——————————-

Much larger sample to draw from. If Hue went 8-8 for four straight seasons I don’t think he’d have many defenders, even if he lost McFadden, his QB went down, he was saddled with a terrible DC and the owner died in each of those four seasons.

    —-

The point is there are other factors in determining how good a coach is based off his record.

That was the big deal with Ford and Moore. All of a sudden, there were WRs on our team that know how to catch a ball with their hands. The weird thing is, that’s the norm on other teams. Given that these two guys have unbelievable hands

    ***

    Arj,

I agree with most of what you said. I think JFORD has the ability & desire to be a playmaker – however!! too many drops, fumbles & bad routes to allow me to see he should even start for this football team. I would NEVER say he has “unbelievable hands”. In fact, I wouldn’t be upset if we traded the guy for a 2nd rounder if theres a team willing to give us one.

DHB, Moore, Ford, Murphy & Schilens all have the same issue. potential doesn’t always add up to production. Call it the “Jerry Porter virus” if you will. consistancy is a HUGE problem that has plagued this unit for years

  573. ElkGRaider Says:

Just when it seemed things couldn’t get more surreal, there came news of the boat party. Stephen Doyle, a Minnesota attorney who represents the cruise company, alleges that his clients witnessed graphic sex acts by a number of passengers, with some crew members invited to participate.

Not saying that because I want to hire them (or think that they are awesome) I am saying that because they have analyzed our offense and/or defense and would probably have a lot to say on how to improve it. Obviously in some cases they found issues to exploit that may still be there. If they give really good answers and Reg thinks they have what it takes to HC then yea hire them. I don’t think he will do anything until he interviews Moss. Get ready for 2nd interviews!

  757. al d. davis Says:

Hire Rich Gannon: excellent former Superbowl QB, talented, highly intelligent, disciplinarian, great football savvy, addicted to work.

Idiot AL should have hired him 10 yrs ago instead of the scheknell plungs (German expression for “notable un-notables) for HC’s.

Reggie, the Raiders don’t need has-been GB exec’s or staff members; don’t act as if the Raiders are midgets standing on the shoulders of the GB giant. GB is fallible as we saw against the NY, and are weak at defense. Look toward the 49′ers as your template then come up with a new applicable for the Raiders.

BTW, what has Winston Moss done for anyone lately ??

  758. MistaBrown Says:

So Reggie gets anointed the savior and genius although he has never been a GM. Now the same wanna-be experts are turning on him already.

Chucky’s contract expired yesterday. But I agree with you: the first post we should have read this morning was that McKenzie fired Chucky, who was presently cleaning out his office.

Anything else is absurd. Attenutate the taint of Stink AL.

  761. Dakota Says:

If Chucky’s contract has expired, why would McKenzie have to fire him?

And if McKenzie is going to allow the new HC to pick his staff, why would you people want him making decisions about assistant coaches right now anyhow?

    WTF people?

  762. RaiderRockstar Says:

Didn’t Reggie say at the press conference the new coach would pick his own staff. As soon as he said that it meant the current staff was out.It is possible some might be re-hired by the new coach

    ***

    Lefty,

we don’t know when the contracts of those asst coaches expire. Highly doubt anybody has been “fired” before the new HC gets a chance to see who’s here and if he wants to find asst coaches elsewhere

If I fire a boss and i’ve got a few employees who are 1 or 2 years into a 3-year contract … whats the point of firing a few guys, just to rehire them later? just to p1ss them off?

Chris,we can’t be sure what his reasons are,I’m guessing just like everyone. However,Mornhinweg is well thought of around the league. All the others who have been interviewed played against us this past season. And most,if not all,are associated with offenses.

    ———————————

Something else to consider is both those guys were NFC North head coaches during the span of Chubby Checker’s 18-year career in Green Bay. So he may have seen something he liked about them during that time?

What ever happened to Mike White after he got canned? Did he go on to work as an OC elsewhere in the league after that? I’d look it up but Wikipedia is on strike.

Fk BSPN, I heard a few of those fker’s say that out of the coaching jobs still open, Oaklands is the least attractive. I mean C’MON MAN really. They will never give us any respect until we make them. I was hoping it would be this year.

    ********************************************************

I wonder if it has something to do with all the big contracts that we have that are going to be hard to get rid of, the lack of depth on the roster, and the fact that we have no draft picks this year.

To me, those are the biggest hurdles this tem has to overcome. Which is why I’m glad McKenzie’s here. Hue Jackson’s heart might have been in the right place, but no way he overcomes it faster than a guy like McKenzie.

I mean, why else would anyone consider the Dolphins over the Raiders, for example? Their owner is a clown, and they have to get past the Patriots and the Jets to get anywhere.

  768. vshape Says:

it’s late, but let me chime in none the less.

i have a suspicion that mark wanted hue gone during the gm hiring process. once mckenzie accepted the offer and came onboard, mark decided that he would have mckenzie fire hue under his watch as gm so as to show that mckenzie was in charge. mckenzie, being the new gm and wanting to appease mark, fired hue as he mentioned in the press conference (putting his name on it as the gm now in charge).

fast forward to today — now that the coaching search is underway, mckenzie is finding that getting someone better than hue is turning out to be more of a tougher task than he originally had anticipated. somehow, his short list (as he mentioned in the press conference) morphed into this massive (just get someone better than hue to save face) list. so, now he’s scrambling to get someone onboard, while playing it cool and portraying that he’s under control.

how does one get to thinking like this? 1. paranoia (if you’ve been a raider fan for any length of time, then this comes with the territory) 2. look at list of interview candidates mentioned thus far. you know the list…

i have a very hard time believing that these candidates would have been high on any gm’s must have list; even for a new gm. then add the possibility that mark may not want to spend competitive money on a real hc and now you have mckenzie in an even tougher spot.
on the surface, it looks as though keeping hue and letting him pick his staff would have been the prudent move for mckenzie in his first year, but only time will tell.

my suspicion may be way way off; i certainly hope so. i hope mckenzie knows exactly what he’s doing and really has that top candidates list he claimed in the press conference and that he’s just being diligent, asking lots of questions during these interviews, and getting information to finally make a big splash soon. let’s hope.
