Report: Raiders coaching candidate backs out
By Steve Corkran
Wednesday, January 18th, 2012 at 6:55 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy has removed himself from consideration for the Raiders head coaching vacancy, according to the Denver Post.
McCoy was set to interview with Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie on Wednesday. Instead, McCoy informed McKenzie that he isn’t interested, canceled the interview and boarded a plane for New York for a second interview with Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross about their coaching vacancy.
McKenzie also was scheduled to interview Broncos defensive coordinator Dennis Allen in Denver on Wednesday. No word on if that one went off as planned.
The word from Miami is that McCoy considers himself to be the front-runner for the Dolphins job, and he didn’t want to do anything to jeopardize that by entertaining other suitors.
McKenzie, according to the Miami Herald, wasn’t real thrilled with McCoy’s change of heart.

He is about to accept the Dolphins job, plus who gives a sh!t about Mike McCoy unless we are bringing in some oafish fullback to play quarterback and we need to adjust our offensive philosophy…

Good if he declined!
I don’t want an overrated reach of a head coach prospect and an orange pony coaching the Raiders!

Al D.
I’m not a fan of Philbin either. Condolences to his families loss also.
However, he doesn’t seem like a legit head coach and a leader of men. Another guy piggy backing off of McCarthys play calling.

DKnight007 #4:
Oh okay, I didn’t realize that was his (Philbin’s) son who drowned last week. That’s tragic, the result of which would be lack of concentration professionally for at least a season.
I still think we should hire Rich Gannon.
January 18th, 2012 at 7:07 pm
Why does the Denver Post have a through article about this that was printed hours ago and our beat writers are just now reporting it?No wonder the OaklandTribune,CCTimes, etc. are going broke.News is supposed to be your business, and reporting that news is supposed to be your job.No offense, but you aren’t doing it very well.

I think McCoy didn’t want to be in the AFC West. He may have some loyalty to Fox and didn’t want to give stuff away to the Raiders as well as play Fox twice a year.

January 18th, 2012 at 8:01 pm
McCoy better hope he gets the gig cuz he’s no longer an option in McKenzie’s eyes, I’m sure. Heck, I would think interviewing here would help his cause in Miami. Instead, he now better hope it works out. If I’m Miami, I feel like the chips are stacked in my favor when it comes to negotiating a contract.

The dude talks and acts like he should be behind a butchers counter handing out wax paper covered steaks and chops with a freakin grease pencil behind his ear! I made fun of my Bear fan friends when he got promoted to O.C for F’s sake. This would be a tragedy of mass proportions, especially getting rid of Hue for this freakin meathead.
January 18th, 2012 at 8:02 pm
Steven, he can hire Moss now and hire GB scouts later. Holding off on hiring Winston Moss to explore other candidates = Hang on, Winston. We’re not quite sure about you’re ability. We might as well just scrap the Moss idea now. Already tainted. He knows he’s not our first choice.

McKenzie wanted to hire Moss the day he was hired here, but Mark told him no. That’s all this is.
January 18th, 2012 at 8:03 pm
Thats how you win in todays NFL…. It will be an adjustment, and how reggie will be ultimately judged
January 18th, 2012 at 8:04 pm
Moss will be tne coach…he is doing this right
January 18th, 2012 at 8:06 pm
He’s not doing this right. He’s doing this just how Al Davis would do it. He thinks the Raiders are so in demand that he can just let a coach lie in wait while we interview other candidates. Delusional just like dad. We’re the Raiders. Of course he’ll wait. Anyone who would isn’t worth a crap anyway.
January 18th, 2012 at 8:11 pm
Mark, just like dad, thinks Winston Moss wants to be a “raidah” so bad, he’ll just sit there in a glass case while we pursue bigger names with more experience. Coaches like Cowher went out the window the second we hired a GM. Because those guys want control. We might as well go with a lesser name that our GM wants. Everything was perfect. Leave it to a Davis to fukc it up.
January 18th, 2012 at 8:16 pm
When we go back to Winston Moss with our tail between our legs after all of these retreads reject us, I hope he says no. Mark would deserve it. Reggie would have to settle on Al Saunders. He’d probably quit after next year.
January 18th, 2012 at 8:21 pm
Post 33 and 34 extremely weak.
AD would have kept all the assistants to save money and only a Coach that was desperate for a chance would take the job AKA Lane, Tom, Norv etc….
BTW I don’t want Bill Cowher – Coach/GM rarely works. That’s why we got rid of Hue.
Does Allen and Bowles really have more experience than Moss? Why are so many in this huge rush??? This is an important decision. It is also an opportunity to get perspective about what this team needs from many voices.
January 18th, 2012 at 8:21 pm
Saint’s OC Pete Carmichael Jr. to interview with Colts on Thursday.
The Colts would still be required to follow Rooney Rule so there would still be time for the Raiders to get in the mix.
Reggie needs to speed up his process or he risks losing good candidates to other teams.
January 18th, 2012 at 8:23 pm
Also cant judge big mac until after the draft better yet 2 drafts….then judge
January 18th, 2012 at 8:26 pm
Green Bay has been one of the BEST franchises while Big Reh has been there.
In the same time frame the Raiders besides there run with Gruden have been mediocre since 1994.
Give this guys some, time. We need to judge him by Wins and Losses.
Not by how many interviews he does..

Actually, I’m one those “Raiders to LA” guys, and I think this plan is awesome.
The ONLY reason I’ve been advocating for a Raiders move to LA is because of their need for a new stadium.
If they can get it done without leaving the Oakland area,so much the better!
January 18th, 2012 at 8:28 pm
Why is moss not being mentioned as an interviewee?
January 18th, 2012 at 8:31 pm
I don’t get some of the schmucks we’re interviewing. I get some of them.
But, obviously it’s no risk. If we really want Winston Moss he’d take the opportunity to become a HC, but it’s not like he’s in demand at this point and we risk not getting him.
The risk is if we wait too long, losing good OC or DCs (like Nolan who we lost and soon Spags)

I asked this question before…who knows? Would Reggie HAVE to interview him since he knows him already and already said that he will jump at the chance to hire Moss if he ever was in position to???
January 18th, 2012 at 8:35 pm
I like the fact that he’s taking a look at different options and not stuck on one type of coach. I just am not inspired by the majority of who he’s interviewing.
But, I hope he’s narrowing his sights now on who he really likes and we hire someone quickly so we can put the rest of the coaching staff in place and McKenzie can put his attention onto the internal organizational structure, get some more support in the personnel area etc.
January 18th, 2012 at 8:36 pm
I think this whole Green Bay every coach is on McKenzie’s short list was and still is just speculation. Maybe he doesn’t want those coaches…until he seeks permission and lines up an interview, they’re not yet “offically” authorized people for us to hire.

Sound logic. Makes sense to me. Al Saunders is already one of the top OC’s. We don’t need upgrading there. The DC, a totally different story. We need to switch to a 3-4 defense and hire a 3-4 DC.

Jean Quan has taken a political beating this fall, particularly from Occupy Oakland and the insurgent recall campaign. But on Friday, the mayor came out swinging with a new proposal to build a massive sports village at the Oakland Coliseum. Dubbed “Coliseum City,” the project is designed to be privately funded and would include a new ballpark for the A’s, a new stadium for the Raiders, and a new arena for the Warriors, along with a convention center, hotel, and retail strip.
Although some of the mayor’s critics scoffed at the sweeping plan, city officials said they’ve already received interest from six private development teams in response to a request for bids. Coliseum City also appears to have strong support on the city council. “It could really be a transformative project,” Councilwoman Rebecca Kaplan told the Express. “I’m really excited.” Kaplan has been working on the plan with council President Larry Reid, who said he’s also jazzed about it. “It would just be incredible if we were able to do something bigger and better than AT&T Park or LA Live” in Los Angeles, he said in a phone interview.
The mayor’s announcement followed news last week that the Warriors’ owners had talked with San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee about a possible new basketball arena near AT&T Park. The San Francisco Chronicle reported that the Warriors also talked to Quan about a new arena in Oakland — apparently it was about Coliseum City. In addition, the San Francisco 49ers have been trying to convince the Raiders to move to the South Bay and share their planned new stadium in Santa Clara.
There also has been widespread speculation recently that Major League Baseball will soon green-light the A’s planned move to San Jose. The team has been assembling land there, and A’s co-owner Lew Wolff is good buddies with baseball commissioner Bud Selig. However, it remains unclear how the A’s can overcome the San Francisco Giants’ territorial rights to the South Bay, which prohibit any other major league club from moving there — unless three-fourths of the league’s owners agree to it.
Still, if Oakland were to lose three professional sports franchises to nearby cities on Quan’s watch, it might be a death blow to her political career. And keeping the teams will be no easy task. It remains to be seen, for example, whether the city’s efforts to keep the A’s will be successful, because the team’s ownership desperately wants to leave. Moreover, questions abound as to how Oakland would be able pull off a major new development like Coliseum City, especially if the state Supreme Court sides with Governor Jerry Brown’s plan to kill redevelopment in California.
Kaplan, however, said Coliseum City could potentially be built without redevelopment funds because the city and county already own the land. Kaplan noted that the city has been buying up property around the Coliseum so there is plenty of space for the large development. Kaplan also is working on scoring $40 million in funds from the Alameda County transportation plan. Because of its proximity to BART, rail, and I-880, the project may be eligible for transit-oriented-development funding.
As for Quan, Coliseum City represents a chance to shift the conversation in Oakland away from Occupy and the recall. She said that her administration has been talking to Major League Baseball about Coliseum City and she feels upbeat about its prospects. That’s not to say, however, that she has completely given up on the possibility of a waterfront ballpark at Victory Court in the city’s Jack London District not far from downtown. “That’s still my favorite site,” she said.
Piedmont OK’s Controversial Park
Follow the money: in this case, $6 million. A group of Piedmont residents offered it up years ago to construct a new soccer field and miniature sports complex on the city’s last remaining open space, and last week the Piedmont City Council formally accepted. The meeting lasted until 2:30 a.m. thanks to a parade of speakers, reported the Piedmont Patch, but in the end the council voted just as it has in past Blair Park decisions: four in favor, and one, Councilman Garrett Keating, opposed.
Criticism of the project ranged from environmental concerns to traffic and public safety issues related to putting a sports park on busy Moraga Avenue in a narrow canyon. “It’s a very disappointing decision,” said Marjorie Blackwell of Friends of Moraga Canyon, a citizen’s group that has led the often passionate opposition to the project among Piedmont residents. “They’re very determined to go ahead with this project. There’s been this relentless drumbeat to do it. It doesn’t seem to matter what we say; they’re still going to do it.”
Flooding Threatened Historic Oak
Some Oakland residents raised concerns last week that the historic oak tree in front of Oakland City Hall was being threatened by flooding of the plaza following the removal of the Occupy encampment. Molly Batchelder of Oakland charged that the city was purposely overwatering to keep the occupiers from returning. But Quan’s spokeswoman, Sue Piper, suggested it was a water leak or that the city was heavily watering the plaza to regrow the lawn that was killed by the Occupy encampment.
Whatever the reason, too much water could doom the historic oak. A common rule of thumb is that the diameter of the root system of a mature tree is approximately two to four times the diameter of its crown. This means that the oak’s roots extend to the flooded area of the plaza — well beyond the concrete barrier that immediately surrounds the tree. Improper watering can leave roots prone to disease and pest infestation, and once a root system is severely affected, the tree usually must be removed. The morning after the Express reported about the tree on its website, a city Public Works employee showed up to check the sprinkler valve in the tree well to ensure it was closed tight, test the soil moisture within the tree well, and take a series of photos around the base of the tree.

Ok, seriously. McKenzie was in Denver today right? SO, he either interviewed their DC and hired him, or after McCoy stoop him up, he said oh Fack it! and just went with what his gut was telling him all along, and picked up the phone and called Moss, hence the “verbal agreement”. Because they were not in each other’s presence to sign any contracts.

I thought it’d be Moss all along, but can’t figure out why the GM just doesn’t get right down to it and sign him. Interviewing all these B coaches might be some odd PR move or something, just don’t know. But my ‘gut’ feeling tells me it Moss because the two of them are probably closer than we know.

I can see that happening. Because it’s strange that none of the Packers guys interviewed yet even though their season is over. I think Reggie know/knew all along that he will get a Pack guy but wanted to appear like he was doing due dilligence.
But it’s not a good sign if McCoy dropping him makes him sensitive to the point that he says “the hell with Tice, who am I kidding?” And he just stops the game and get his guy.
Because if he gets sensitive about not geting his way on something like this, he could be the type that makes drastic decisions when he gets upset.

“Allen is known for his aggressive “bend but don’t break” defensive play calling that gives up a lot of yards, but also forces many sacks and turnovers. In 2009 in New Orleans, the Saints ranked 3rd in interceptions despite giving up 321 yards per game.[1] Allen’s Broncos are currently in the bottom half of yards allowed, ranked 23rd, but are 5th in the league in sacks.[2]“

With BicMac being in Denver, who else could it be? It’s either Allen, or he did call someone on the phone. And if he did, then it had to be someone he knows pretty well. He wouldn’t just call Tice per say and tell him “the job is yours!”. Or let’s hope not.
It has to be someone from either GB, or someone he had in his back pocket. If not Allen.
It just better not be Cork blowing smoke up someone’s a$$ just for the fun of it!

So! Mackenzie is looking at Tice 32-33 Reg season and 1-1 playoffs. He is also looking at Mornhinweg with a reg season record of 5-27! And then there is Crappers….I mean Capers with a 40-80 or 41-81 if you include his 2 times to the playoffs.
ALL proven losers. And this is the sh!t we get with a GM???? REALLY????
Why is he not looking at Marty Schottenheimer 200-126-1 Regular Season and 5-13 in playoffs?
Why is he not looking Jon Gruden 95–81–0 (Regular Season)
5–4 (Postseason)
100–85–0 (Overall)
If non of you like this..then give me a reason for hiring a proven loser….all you have to do is look at Norv Turner to know that any one that Mckenzie is looking at is acceptable!!!

As for the Raiders assistant coaches, those under contract now are free to seek employment elsewhere, given the Raiders didn’t notify them Tuesday if they are going to be kept around.
League rules specify that coaches under contract are to be notified by the third Tuesday after the regular season ends if they aren’t going to be kept around or might be terminated.
McKenzie said that he will let the head coach make the determination on which coaches are asked back. Given the Raiders don’t have a head coach, no decision has been made.

Problem is they make these media jobs like the one Gruden has so darn appealing and cushy.
Gruden has it made. He gets best of both worlds. He gets the respect of being a great football mind as for reviving Raiders and winning SB with Bucs, plus he has “star power” with his unique image; the scowl, the QB analysis he does and everything else.
I’d give him more respect if he DID actually roll up his sleeves and get back in the down and dirty coaching world, but being a TV celebrity is a big draw. Why give it up? He’s got it made.
Cowher? Same thing. Coaching is tough compared to the gigs these guys have.
Blame the media outlets who worship these guys. Gruden would be back coaching if the media didn’t roll out the red carpet for him.

Is it possible this is all just him getting off on interviewing people? The power of being in the big chair and he’s milking it?

And you wonder if he goes very young its all about the 2 or three year plan which will be hard on all of us considering the last time you could say Im a raiders fan and people said oh well there tough.
January 19th, 2012 at 7:11 am
Why would it take a month, RRS?
Especially if you already had a short list of “your guys”?
Not really trippin on the rook yet.
Just letting him know some of us are not happy about 1) him flying to Denver of all places, and 2) getting stood up and looking silly in the process.
January 19th, 2012 at 7:13 am
Dan Patrick ripping on the Colts right now? “You don’t fire Jim Caldwell without having an idea on who you’re gonna hire to replace him. They are doing this the wrong way”.
January 19th, 2012 at 7:13 am
its funny to, the guys been in power for a little more than a week. He s supposed to hire the coach that he ll put his legacy behind. Make your mark reggie and all the nation wont forget you if its the right decision. guys reading the post on here , Im excited and checking everyday . And you cant help but be this way considering how things have been. YOu have to let this guy do his job and give him unfortunately 3 years.
January 19th, 2012 at 7:16 am

Wouldn’t really put it like that.
For me, I’m trying to get a feel for our new GM. HE SAID at the press conference that he had a short list of candidates and he wanted to get it wrapped up because of the senior bowl, combine, and draft coming up. Or something to that effect.
We’re falling behind schedule to interview Mike Tice and Morningwig?
Falling behind so he can fly to Denver?
Were Bowles and the NO OC that bad of an interview?
January 19th, 2012 at 7:18 am
I never understood why we would want a guy who ran a pathetic college option offense anyway.

Al Saunders for HC!
Phugg it.
January 19th, 2012 at 7:20 am
As a fan, I am not understanding of a three yr. plan to “rebuild”.
You say that about a 4-12 team with little talent, not a .500 team that was one defensive stop from winning the Afc West and hosting Pittsburgh in the playoffs with a still relatively young team.
No. I’m not accepting that.
This is not about Reggie playing with a new toy and building it ‘his way’ no matter what.
I cannot accept that we are not very close to winning NOW!
Why rebuild to the point that in three yrs. we will MAYBE get to the point we are right now?
January 19th, 2012 at 7:21 am
I think it’s going take a few years for Reggie to build the team the way he wants.
I have a feeling the coach he hires this offseason will have a short stay.
There are no slam dunk coaches available and coordinators are gonna get gobbled up by the time Reggie finishes interviewing some of these retread coaches.
I’m all for a thurough interview process, but don’t like the candidates this year. I hope i’m wrong and he finds the next Madden.
January 19th, 2012 at 7:24 am
Yup, to many of us here…we need to find the right coach, and then its playoffs or bust!
January 19th, 2012 at 7:25 am
It’s like driving the family 2,000 miles to get to Disney World and realizing you only have enough money to spend two days there, so u decide to cancel the trip, turn around and drive back so you can get enough money to spend a whole week there.

I don’t think it’s a big deal that Reggie Mac hasn’t interviewed any Packer asst coaches (yet).
I’d venture to guess he knows Moss, Philbin, Clements, Capers & Perry pretty well, being with GB for 18 years!
Question is, who else is out there? Is anybody better?
I don’t want a guy to be Head Coach, just because I know him. I want him because he’s the best possible HC on the market!
- thats what I’m thinking if I’m Reggie McKenzie -

Exactly. He already knows what he would have in Moss. He’s interviewing other guys to see if any of them are better. If Moss flies in, it will be because Reggie’s about to offer him the job.

The Raiders were a weak .500 team, though. Look at the quality of opponents in most of their wins. Houston is the only one that stands out as a somewhat respectable opponent. And they didn’t blow out a single team this season.
The Raiders are full of low talent players. This is going to take awhile, unless they pull of some really amazing stuff in free agency. I would dig in for a potentially painful season in 2012, particularly if DMac is going to be up to his usual shenanigans.
January 19th, 2012 at 7:32 am
Not saying any names but it’s interesting that some of the same people who wanted Hue Jackson gone after 8-8 season (with all the injuries including QB going down and a DC u had no say in hiring etc.) are saying we need to be “patient” and understanding while we rebuild for 3 yrs with this 1st yr. GM.
January 19th, 2012 at 7:35 am
RRS,
When did I say anything about GB guys being interviewed?
I don’t really care about those guys. In fact, I am totally against Moss as the HC.
I said the main reason this should be wrapped up by the weekend is so we can have a staff in place prior to all the offseason stuff like the Senior Bowl.
Would have been nice to actually see a short list, and to be on the 2nd round of interviews.
January 19th, 2012 at 7:37 am
I think some of us got caught up in the season earlier. I honestly thought we played in a weak division and had the same wont make a tackle, bad angle taking guys we have had for seasons. The buffalo game said a lot to me that week. Then we we needed to win against teams we should have miami, kc and denever. I mean how many teams deserve to back themselve into the playoffs, with a four game losing streak. Overall what needed to happen happened! and thats some guys have to go, a build the right way from top to bottom and a lot of frustration frm the faithfull because of our great but got old leader AL. It is possible in this league to turn around in one year but without draft choices ?????
January 19th, 2012 at 7:39 am
#216,
I understand what you’re saying, but we were very close to beating some of those better teams.
My feeling is with not that many defensive changes we can be 11-5 at least, even without DMAC, when we almost won those games anyway.
Let’s “rebuild” when we reach a point where it is obviously necessary.
It’d be a shame to be so close and then just retreat when we don’t have to……..yet.

You don’t need to say. I know who you’re talking to. I’ve stated my reasons for wanting Hue gone MULTIPLE times. It’s not my fault you can’t process that in your tiny little head.
ONCE MORE FOR YOU AND THEN I’M DONE TALKING ABOUT THE DISMISSED FKHEAD HUE JACKSON: It had nothing to do with the 8-8 outcome. It was his undermining ego crap. The guy has a reputation for being a cancer everywhere he goes. They weren’t sorry to see him leave Baltimore or Cincy. He’s the T.O. of coaches. I’ve posted the link to discussion about this on the Ravens fans message board. Feel free to look it up in the archives.
If Reggie brings another guy in here that turns out like that, then you’ll have every right to talk sh!t back to us that wanted Hue gone. Until then, just STFU about it already.
January 19th, 2012 at 7:43 am
This is what you get with a rush have to win mentality Al did. Every year it was do whatever but you have to draft and put a Real Offensive line together not make shift and think your gonna win superbowl. We would have been KC last year a team that made it to playoffs but what ? and teh next year what ?
January 19th, 2012 at 7:55 am
Raiding Texas,
Geez man. What the hell? I wasn’t even talking about you specifically. I see you are one of the ones that want to “rebuild” but i’m not mentioning names cuz there are too many to mention.
I said I get where you’re coming from. No reason to get so damn mean.
January 19th, 2012 at 7:59 am
Can we just skip all the crap and hire Moss as our HC already and move on. This is taking entirely too long.

=========================================
I agree…using S.F. as a measuring stick, the only way i see a similar “turnaround” is if;
-Carson Palmer decreases TD:INT ratio
-a running game that controls the clock adds to that
-one RB or slot type player that goes for 60-70 recepts and 15 TDs – a coverage nightmare type player
-an offensive RT
-a stout interior OL at the level of a Jahiri Evans or Iupati, that is wrecking ball in the run game
defensively
-a standout rusher that racks up 15 or more sacks, in addition to the line
-a stout NT or DT (depending on what front we run), a coordinator that makes major success very early
-another corner opposite that is shut down and physcial enough to match up with Bowe, Jackson, Decker and the bigger targets we’ll face
-a MLB that is solid – so rapid improvement, or a huge turnaround with Curry wreaking havoc inside in a 3-4
-a coverage type bigger safety that can be an additional blitzer, but can still be physical enough to match up with TE’s
all this while adjusting to a new coaching staff and scouting system that has yet to be implemented.
the good news is that there are 17-18 FA’s or players who were on one year deals and a couple that are just begging for injury settlements so they can move on elsewhere.
the bad news, not many picks and stuck with contracts of Routt, Huff and Seymour. I believe the other bigger ones have out clauses, and i’m unsure if Wimbley would re-structure.
January 19th, 2012 at 8:09 am
Djohnnyg, sorry. I mistook you targeting me. I’ve been in this argument with some others around here repeatedly. And I posted that response before I saw your “get where you’re coming from” comment. Again apologies.
I’m just tired of this Hue talk. I think it is the right move to rid this organization of all of Al’s crap. Al was himself a source of serious dysfunction. That dysfunction filtered all the way down through the coaching to the players (and arguably the fan base since there seems to be so much infighting here – lol).
I just think the level of talent on the defense is just as much to blame as Chuck. The DC isn’t at fault because guys can’t tackle, get blocked out of plays easily, etc. There’s too much stupidity on that team.

Jhill,
the Senior Bowl isn’t for another 9 days (01/28) and historically all types of coaches turn up there looking for work. Who knows? We could have a coach in place by then and find some assts there – or maybe McKenzie shows up there and interviews a few more guys for the HC job. who knows?
Moss doesn’t seem “hot” right now to Miami, Indy or Tampa … so why not look at some other dudes?
same goes for Perry as DC or Clements as OC
all 3 guys could be hired by McKenzie tomorrow or Feb 10th – makes no difference to me. Just get the right guys!

And true, there have been some Steve Spurriers. But the thing with Spurrier is that he took over a program that was already a very attractive school for top high school talent. It’s easy to be a winner when you take over a winning program. He just took the Gators and turned on the cruise control. Any guy coming from a situation like that could easily have his NFL potential overestimated.
I would look for a guy who has coached at Div 1 schools that were unattractive, perennially mediocre or losers, and then turned those into much improved programs. Specifically – despite my hatred for Baylor – I like Art Briles and think he’s a guy who could make that transition. The Bears have always been the Big 12’s floor mat. To get to where they are now having to play the likes of Texas, OU and OSU every season is pretty impressive.
Baylor will have several players drafted in April, including a likely top 10 pick. Briles clearly knows how to find talent and develop a good product around it.

Baylor will have several players drafted in April, including a likely top 10 pick. Briles clearly knows how to find talent and develop a good product around it.

True, that’s why I have an open mind about either former or a rookie HC.
With the former HCs, I don’t necessarily look at W-L, but the decisions that were made and how hard the team played for that HC.

Jack Del Rio was only a DC for one year (2002)
After Seifert was fired following the disastrous 2001 season, the Panthers hired New York Giants defensive coordinator John Fox as the team’s third head coach. Fox was known for defensive discipline and it would be needed to improve a team that had finished in the bottom of the defensive rankings the previous year.
In 2002, Fox’s defense-first philosophy worked well as the Panthers improved to 7–9 (a six-game improvement over the previous year) and posted the second-best overall defense in the league after having the second-worst the previous season.

I don’t think so, because if they are not hired as HC, the team can block them from leaving. You can’t interview the Bears OC, Tice, and then hire him as the OC for the Raiders. Or the Broncos DC to the Raiders DC. Their teams can stop it.

It’s as simple as if Moss is a candidate, why hasn’t he been INTERVIEWED yet?

I obviously think there are some merit to the HC choice since I’ve been against Moss from day 1, wouldn’t you say?
I think Baltimore has been looking for an offensive mind to compliment that defense for quite some time. Billick came from the high powered Minny offense.
I posted the tweet earlier from the guy who had been reviewing Baltimore’s offense. You have had players openly complaining about his game plans that avoid their best offensive player Ray Rice.
Just simply looking at result of what Jim did at Stanford and what he was able to do his first year in SF, I think it’s pretty clear that he is the better chess player. To me anyway.

That team has been turrible for a long time.
COMPLETE turnaround.
Same with Wade Phillips taking pretty much the same defensive roster and making it one of the best in the league.
Capers impacting GBs defense.
LeBeau coming back and turning the Steeler D around.

DD,
co-signed. My best guess is (to answer Jhill’s question earlier) Reggie Mac is looking for a leader. a no nonsense guy. somebody that can unify the team instead of offense blaming defense and vice versa. A man of integrity that promotes toughness and avoids the spotlight or any type of personal gain. a hard worker that sets an example for the guys he coaches. somebody who listens and is humble. Ron Wolf said something about Hue’s reputation around the league. not sure what he meant by that – good or bad, but I guarantee you Reggie ain’t gonna hire somebody like Kiffin that would tarnish the shield. no wonder he was p1ssed about McCoy. not that he was blown off, but the way that guy conducts business.

Our offense is ready to win us the division.
We have a GM who will get us a much better defensive roster next year.
Everything is in place, or will be by the time the season starts.

True, but at least with Bowles you’re getting a VERY successful position coach, with some HC experience where his team played hard for him despite having no real reason to do so.
He might not even be a bad fit for DC here. He’s technically not under contract anymore with the Dolphins, if I’m not mistaken.

Raiding Texas,
No problem. It’s all good. Thx.
I know it may make sound football sense to “rebuild” fo long term, sustained success but i am inpatient due to the all the time we’ve been waiting to have a team that can just get to the playoffs.
Judging from two 8-8 seasons in a row after so many bad ones, it would seem like the natural progression to improve this coming year to at least the AFC West title.
I think we have enuff on offense to get that done. Palmer will get better with a full camp and offseason etc. DMAC should be healed, and we have emerging stars at receiver. There are much worse O-lines in the league than ours. I don’t recall Palmer being under that much duress. They could run block better though.
Defensively? That’s where the big “fixing” needs to be done imo. With some key FA aquisitions…i think we could at least elevate to “average”.
Yes. I am inpatient. It’s depressing to think of waiting another 2-3 yrs. when we’ve had enough misery.

DJG,
depends on the DC, which depends on the HC.
are we switching to a 3-4 Defense? If so, thats gonna take some time to transition. Purging some players and moving around others. lots of coaching & development this offseason, not just your typical weight lifting & film study.
Plus whatever happens.. we either gotta school our players in zone or just go back to the Davis man2man stuff, because the secondary looked lost whenever we tried to get creative or disguise anything
Routt without Al Davis is about as good as Asomugha without Al Davis. both players are overpaid & overrated.

Pete Carmichael, Jr. has been under Sean Payton’s wing since 2006 … Payton is the play caller.
the guy has never been a play caller, so I don’t think it’s fair to assume he’s an X’s and O’s guy
prior to being with the Saints, he was the asst WR Coach for the Chargers, helping out James Lofton!
********************************************************
He actually called plays when Payton injured his leg and was confined to the booth for games. According to Payton he did such a good job that he was allowed to handle the bulk of the playcalling for the remainder of the season.
Don’t know what kind of HC he would be here, though. Word is that he’s kinda quiet; IMO we neded a guy that can come in and command respect because despite the housecleaning of the past couple of years it still appears that we have some players incapable of motivating themselves to play on Sunday.

Those guys don’t make “that” much as analysts. Probably “only” a $300-400,000/yr. Which isn’t bad considering they only work part of the year. A HC at this level is going to make multi millions. But as I have said in here for years, Gruden drove two franchises right into the ground. He is not going to be offered a third any time soon. Regardless of what you guys think.

Can we puleeeese stop with the Gruden talk?
Why would a guy making really big bucks with his announcing job come back here as coach?
=====================================

Unconfirmed “google” reports say that Gruden makes $4.3M a year for Monday night football. (Just google it, plenty of unconfirmed sites) Other sites said that Michael Strahan and Tiki Barber made between $2-3M as TV analysists.

If we are using wrestling characters it goes like this.
GM- Randy “Legend Killer” Orton (self explanatory)
HC- The Undertaker- Only wears black and never quits.
DC- Goldberg- We need that kind of intensity in our defense.
OC- Bret “The Hitman” Hart -The Excellence of Exuction is exactly what keeps our O on track.
SP Teams -Stone Cold Steve Austin- And thats the bottom line.
PR- The Rock (If ya smell what we are cooking)
There you go kids.

Who knows. Boy that is an awful lot of money. That is more than they made playing. Which does not make a lot of sense to me. I could see the guys on the Network Pregame shows making more than the color guys who do one game, and certainly the MNF and SNF guys would make more, but multi-multi-millions? I find that hard to believe. But maybe…..

NEW!~ 01-19-12: METHOD TO MAC’S MADNESS?
His HC interviews look scattered and haphazard but is there more going on than meets the eye?

January 19th, 2012 at 5:21 pm
What I don’t understand is that the last few years most fans complained about Al Davis and the way he ran the Raiders like a dictator. We bemoaned not having a GM or scouting department like most teams do. Yet the minute the team starts going down the direction that most of us have been asking for we start complaining about that too. Was Hue Jackson on anyone teams coaching radar besides Al’s? Before coming to the Raiders he had two mediocre stints as an OC with the Redskins and Falcons. Yes the Raiders got better offensively in two years but maybe that was because we actually had professionals at QB instead of JaMarcus, drafted two talented young receivers in back to back years (Ford and Moore) and one year of a healthy McFadden (2010). Hue was the old way. A HC that no other team would have even thought of hiring, working with Coordinators not of his own choice. So let’s sit back and watch for once how it should be done. A GM interviewing HC candidates, hiring one and then letting him pick his staff. I think we have done it for so long that we don’t know how to stop complaining. But let’s STOP IT.
January 19th, 2012 at 10:51 pm
Did “Spuds” actually screw the pooch this time? I thought when a GM came on board it was to evaluate from top to bottom then make changes. Not in this case? Spuds over played his hand this time! The correct scenario let the HC play his hand. Hue was not a bad coach actually but more of a hands on man. At least he haD TO DEAL WITH INJURIES TO KEY PLAYERS. Had to deal with a bad DC of his choice or defensive overpaid players! So with the current crop of rejects on the coaching carousel. Tell Spuds to rehire and give an apology to Hue and if the team doesn’t improve cut him loose then and not now! Get rid of Palmer now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
