NFL Network: Waufle to Rams as DL coach
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Saturday, January 21st, 2012 at 7:31 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Defensive line coach Mike Waulfe will be the second Raiders assistant coach to leave for another job while the club awaits the hire of a new head coach, according to the NFL Network.
Waufle, who coached the last two seasons with the Raiders after an earlier stint from 1998-2003, was added to the staff of the St. Louis Rams Friday, according to Jason LaCanfora of the NFL Network.
Wide receivers coach Sanjay Lal accepted a job with the New York Jets earlier this week.
Waufle was in attendance at the press conference of new general manager Reggie McKenzie, who said he will leave it to the new Raiders head coach to make all hires on his staff. McKenzie is still in the process of interviewing prospective candidates.
As of Friday, Waufle was still included on the Raiders’ roster of assistant coaches.

We’re definitely going to a 3-4 now with Wauffle leaving.
I can see that…
Funny is, where did Spags go again?
—–
Exactly, I thought we had a strong chance of getting Spagnuolo as DC because we had Wauffle. But McKenzie obviously wants to focus on a 3-4 defense. Which I don’t have a problem with. But yeah, the re-uniting of Spags/Wauffle was writing on the wall.

January 21st, 2012 at 7:34 pm
That increases our odds of Dom Capers or Todd Bowles being DC.
I don’t buy the reason McCoy wasn’t hired by the Dolphins — that he didn’t want Bowles as DC, but more like Philbin could attract Flynn to Miami.

Our defense sucked major ass and we go and single out Hue for it.
————
When Al was around, we didnt dare play anything that Al didnt approve. After Oct 8, we started blitzing more and played more cover 2. Hue was the HC in charge of the ENTIRE GAME PLAN without Al around. So who is ultimately responsible for allowing the cover 2 against Megatron twice? Huebris.

January 21st, 2012 at 7:44 pm
Or when we pin the other team at the .5 yard line not to let them just march down the field 99.5 yards to beat us.
I mean the defense was soooo bad it was the WORST in MANY categories in HISTORY for the Raiders.

For godsakes man, why would you want Tolbert as a replacement for Bush? Bush gained 1000 yds mostly against top tier teams.
——————————-
Yeah. Tolbert is kinda garbage. I don’t think we should franchise Bush or pay him top dollar. Wouldn’t mind something in the $3-4 mil per year range for three years but that’s about how high I’d go.
—
Tolbert looked pretty good when he made that 42 yard run against us when we had em pinned down. How many tackles did he break? A ton. If he is “garbage” than what the heck does that say about our POS defense? With everything on the line and down only five we let that “garbage” seal our season?
That is so pathetic it still makes me irate thinking about it.
——————————————
Says alot about our defense. Some very, very weak tackling on that play.
Don’t forget too it was Tolbert who helped us break the streak against SD last season when he fumbled on our goalline. Without that play we lose that game.

If in the end Winston Moss is the choice, someone at the presser needs to question him on his past transgressions. Makes McClain look like a choir boy.

Reggie is probably still trying to convince Hue to unbind himself from his desk and vacate the premises.
But seriously, as soon as Reggie announces some coaching hires, we’ll get a good grasp what’s going on. Whether it’s Reggie there to keep the Raider status quo going, or whether he’s burning to rebuild.

————————————————–
I’m just afraid that we may be going back to rebuilding for an indefinite amount of time just so some unproven GM can put his stamp on things.
I think this is a team that was finally headed in the right direction. Has a lot of young, talented players. Has the first bigtime QB it’s had in a decade. And we had a coach who I believe is not only a great playcaller and offensive mind, but someone who embodied what the Raiders are all about and was carrying on in the tradition of Al Davis and the Raiders.
Now, who knows? Firing Hue was Reggie’s first move and I believe it was a huge, huge mistake. Now he’s taking his sweet time bringing in guys like Mike Tice to interview for the position. And who knows what he has in mind for the roster.
Maybe it works out. I guess we’ll see. But I had big expectations for this team with DMac back, Palmer in for a full off-season, and Hue calling the plays. With a legit DC, I was expecting a 12-4 season. But if Reggie fails or decides he wants to rebuild who knows where that goes. It could easily set the franchise back another 10 years.
January 21st, 2012 at 8:27 pm
And, yes, new GMs typically bring in their guys. But this was anything but the typical GM hire. The only reason Reggie McKenzie is here because the previous GM passed away. So you can’t really compare it to what happens in other situations where the team blows and gets progressively worse and a new GM comes in and cleans house.
This is a very unique situation.

Meanwhile, it gets even better for Numbnuts McCoy:
Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy reportedly believes he wasn’t hired to coach the Dolphins because he wasn’t willing to keep interim head coach Todd Bowles as the team’s defensive coordinator, replacing Mike Nolan. As it turns out, new coach Joe Philbin may not be keeping Bowles, either.
According to Jason La Canfora of NFL Network, Bengals defensive backs coach Kevin Coyle (pictured) is under consideration for the position.
Coyle, 56, has spent a decade in Cincinnati, his only NFL job. He reportedly was on Philly’s radar last year, but owner Mike Brown wouldn’t grant the Eagles permission to interview him for the job that went to Juan Castillo.
So if Bowles goes and Coyle or someone else gets the job, McCoy’s future candidacy for other head-coaching jobs could be affected adversely.

Sorry, it came out bad, was trying to say here in oakland the re-uniting. I had tipped Spags being DC in Oakland due to Wauffle. But i guess this means for sure we’re moving to a 3-4. Which i am happier to see anyway.

January 21st, 2012 at 9:07 pm
Eventually it will left that there are no coaches and nor players in Oaktown. Just one Reggie McKenzie. This is fine, what with the approach of 12-21-12. Reggie is simply aligning things for the possibilities that exist on this side of the time line as well as the other side of the come what may.
January 21st, 2012 at 9:08 pm
Bowles coming to oakland then
January 21st, 2012 at 9:08 pm
I’ll reserve judgment about moving to a 3-4 when I know who our coaches are. Don’t care either way, I don’t believe a 3-4 or a 4-3 is a better scheme, its about execution. Our 4-3 would be fine if it was executed better, and I don’t believe we conclusively have the pieces one way or the other. I guess we will see when we have a staff how it goes.
January 21st, 2012 at 9:12 pm

Lefty….yeah, agree can’t say anything for sure. Just playing sleuth and speculator as updates/info occur around the league.
But i think that strengthens the odds of moving to a 3-4 tho. I also think the odds of Bowles coming to Oakland increased too. Whether that’s DC or HC dunno.
January 21st, 2012 at 9:27 pm

ANYTHING different (3-4) is ok with me.
There is NOTHING about our defense I would wish to save.
It can’t get any worse than what we saw.
Now teams will take 1:20 instead of 1:30 to go 99 yds. for a TD with the game on the line?
I would hope not.

What would worry me with Marty is not so much that he wouldn’t have learned from his mistake of the coin flip, it’s just that somewhere in his mind he at one time thought it was a good idea in the first place.
What other ridiculous ideas might lurk in that mind of his?

I would’ve said the same thing about our offense 2 years ago. Nothing worth keeping. It was one of the worst in the league. Looks like with good coaching suddenly the players look good. I don’t think our whole defense has crap players. Think a good coach and scheme would suddenly “magically” have the players playing better.
January 21st, 2012 at 10:07 pm
Going to Pryor right now and waiving the white flag on a 32 yr. old potential top 10 QB who has tons of NFL experience and has shown DEFINTIVELY he can play at high level in this league would be the most foolish thing I have ever seen the Raiders do, and I have seen alot of foolishness over the yrs.
January 21st, 2012 at 10:08 pm
Waufle is a good coach? Maybe but the defense blew and the def line never helped stop the run, too concerned with getting sacks
January 21st, 2012 at 10:08 pm
Did Palmers 417 yds. his last game prove he doesn’t have it anymore?
If this is gonna turn into a circus we may as well bring back Jamarcus and Cable.
Why not. What the heck.
January 21st, 2012 at 10:10 pm
That was a blunder we all saw coming. S.Moore. Saw it in pre-season, he was making plays, getting to the ball, breaking up some passes. But Al and then Hue messed up. Mind you, I think Belichick knows how to utilize Moore better. Moore did get signed then released from the Colts, and from the Patriots, before re-signing with the Patriots.
Also, Walter McFadden was signed to a future’s contract with the Steelers.
For the most part we haven’t been burned by the players we released last few years. If one should emerge that we erred on, we’d have a pretty good percentage of not getting burned.

January 21st, 2012 at 10:18 pm
#62,
I think our defense may be alot worse talent wise than that offense that revived.
McClain does not impress me one bit.
I think it starts from the top down. Who is our “leader” on D? Seymour?
The D seriously lacks someone who will stand up and say “No! You are NOT going to just drive down the field on us like this. We are going to stop you and walk away with the AFC West, in front of 65,000 of our closest friends and supporters. No way is that happening. Not today b****es!”
Instead, they just fold up and roll over like they can’t wait for the season to end so they can get on with more important things.
BS.

If we can get some picks…
—–
The big mover during the week’s practice for the East West Shrine Game was CB Josh Norman (Coastal Carolina).
Norman has good size 6′ 203lbs and 4.40 40 yard speed. I’ll be keeping an eye on him when he gets to the combine.
This is from Bucky Brooks @ nfl.com…
Coastal Carolina CB Josh Norman has been the star of the week with his extraordinary display of ball skills. He has picked off at least six passes over the past three days, and gotten his hands on several others. What has been most impressive about watching him work has been his ability to thrive in off coverage. Most big corners want to jam at the line of scrimmage to use their superior size to disrupt the release of the receiver, but Norman has shown the footwork and quickness to blanket receivers from distance. He takes excellent cutoff angles and is rarely out of position on double moves. In speaking with him after practice, he talked about learning how to read the three-step drop (corners will align at eight yards, key the quarterback’s drop before taking their eyes back to the receiver and jumping the route). This week has taken his game to another level. If he can continue to build on the momentum created by his strong performance here, Norman might make a strong push into consideration for the draft’s second day.

I admit a part of me felt sorry for Hue getting canned like that. Impossible for me to hate on a guy who was so passionate about the Raider org. Some say it was all bs but I don’t believe that.
Whether it was becuz (as some have suggested)that he was just so appreciative that Al gave a gimp like him a chance to be a HC in the NFL or not, the guy was authentic in his wanting to win and validate the faith in him.
Did he fail on alot of levels? Yes. This league is unforgiving. You don’t get the job done you’re out, but the guy bled silver and black.
I think his grab for power was less sinister than what others say, but rather him believing he did know best what the org. needed to get better.
I think that’s what scared Fisher off; being concerned Hue would think he knew better than Fisher. That’s gonna be a problem for Hue going forward; that perception which is based on reality- Hue really does think he knows what’s best.

I for one support Terrelle Pryor and hope he does well as our future QB. However, he is too raw and needs to working on his passing ability. I just hope he is working hard on improving his passing mechanics this off-season.
I like to watch college football early in the season when a top team is faced against a scrub team to see how the less talented team schemes to overcome their talent defeatist. Also, how a team with a Heisman candidate plays to display their superior player.
I know that in the NFL every offense and defensive scheme gets put to the ultimate test but I’m just saying…
I really believe that you have to been able to pass to score points, and run the ball in the Redzone for field-goals instead of turnovers. Being a run first team you can easily find yourself in second and long and third and long situations because defenses stack the box against you.
If your defense sucks, blitz as much as possible because you’re going to give up points anyways, might as well try to get a turnover.
The Raiders habit of trading away draft picks for veteran players is great in the short term but it really takes a long time to rebuild afterwards.
I just hope that Reggie McK has a long-term solution to improve the Raiders. But as a fan we have no input on the outcome of our team. We can only watch and hope.

Villager, that statement right there is exactly what I thought we should have tried doing.
As if we were really gonna stop Det. or SD when we had em pinned down by rushing 3 or 4 of our lamers.
I would’ve held up my hands and said ‘Aww hell. Send everybody. It’s our only chance anyway’.

Three players Mr. Mckenzie must keep in the Silver & Black [it goes without saying all are on offense] also I’m keeping it to players under the Raider’s control- therefore Reece & Branch are not included as they have as much to say about where they are playing as do the Raiders:
Vehldeer, Wisniewski, & Moore are the three the Raiders must not trade.
All others trade at will, for other players, or more importantly draft picks.

Can’t do everything in one year. Our O is actually pretty good. Can just tweek it and concentrate on revamping D. We had an identity at season’s start for the first time in 10 yrs.- best running game in league. Can’t trade DMAC. Will have to do w/o Bush – not worth $ as he’ll find out. Hope Taiwan is a player. By the way , biggest waste of a draft pick wasn’t CP it was Pryor. Would love to see Reece step up as second back.
January 22nd, 2012 at 3:23 am
who have we really lost out on in terms of head coaches, zero in my book.
No head coach hiring this off season has made me go, “gosh darn golly gee whiskers, why couldn’t we have signed him as our head coach.”
There have been a few top defensive coordinators we’ve lost out (Nolon, Spagnola) & lost Waufle; I think that has us more bummed out.
January 22nd, 2012 at 3:24 am
I do think Kurt Russell’s wife is still available as head coach.

I think Reggie is waiting until the games are over today. Just think , out of 4 teams playing 3 have good D’s. GB’s D was awful. Look at the Bradshaw run before the end of the first half. How could you let that happen??? Keep Moss , Capers! Watch what Romeo does with KC this year. I think you’re allowed to talk to teams during the SB bye . Does anyone know if this is true?

Get rid of Herrera! He’s a cancer. Org. needs to be more fan-friendly. Give fans some info to pique their interest = ticket sales. George did that for years with the Yankees. Kept them on the back pages. This cloak of secrecy only shows contempt for media and therefore the fan base. There’s more info on this blog than anything coming out of HQ. If the Jets or Giants were looking for a HC. there’d be 5 columns a day in the papers. NY writers would be using all their sources. The writers we have find out from ESPN or NFL network. Awful coverage!!!

Following Reggie McKenzie’s hire as the new general manager of the Oakland Raiders — and McKenzie’s firing of Hue Jackson — many assumed that the former Green Bay Packers personnel man would hire a head coach off of Mike McCarthy’s staff. Perhaps those assumers didn’t give the process enough credit.
According to Dan Pompei of National Football Post, Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg has emerged as a “strong candidate.”
Mornhinweg “has Bay area roots, was a success with the 49ers and has ties to new general manager Reggie McKenzie from their days together in Green Bay,” Pompei writes.
Another assumption being made in recent days regarding the Raiders’ opening was that a defensive coach would be the one tapped for the post, however the Mornhinweg candidacy would refute that idea as well.

—”According to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, there have been “whispers” amongst Packers ILB AJ Hawk’s teammates about “how little his game has to offer.”Signed to a new five-year, $33.8 million deal last March as Nick Barnett was allowed to walk, Hawk tallied just 84 tackles and 1.5 sacks while failing to force a turnover in 14 games this season. He graded out as Pro Football Focus’ 35th best 3-4 inside linebacker. A favorite of GM Ted Thompson, Hawk is unlikely to be released despite his 2012 base salary of $4.4 million”—

Here’s hoping for a HC announcement by early in the week. If Reggie waits too long all of the best assistants will be off the market. Don’t want to lose Wylie or Saunders. I’m not too concerned about the rest, especially if we’re going to more 3-4 and hybrid defense.

#128: That would be a shame. I said before the season that Wylie is one of the best o-line coaches around and he proved it with the work he did with a weak bunch (center to RT). Saunders’ system would be a perfect fit with our skill set at QB, RB and WR if actually allowed to call plays.

I’m fine with that.
January 22nd, 2012 at 8:37 am
As long as Dom Capers is coming over, as either the DC or HC, I will be beyond happy.
No better person to install a new defensive scheme from scratch.
He has done it multiple times in his career, and they D usually dominates for a few years before it becomes a little stale.
Look at the Packers. Top 5 D for a few years, #1 rushing defense one year, Super Bowl run, than this year the wheels came off a little.
I will gladly sacrifice 2015, for some dominating D for 3 years.

There is NO PLAYER, COACH OR ASSSISTANT from the 2011 Raiders that must be kept. Not one!
You all worry about losing Wauffle? What did he do for that raggedy bunch up front?
And the players….you can blame Breshnahan, and he deserves it, but damn….its not like the Raiders were running some complex zone blitz system. It was mostly a man up defense.
Did the scheme change that much? And on those multiple 99 yard drives…that wasn’t about scheme…nope..that was about 11 guys just making a play…which they didn’t…because they are terrible football players.
Clean the whole damn house Reggie! And take your time and get it right
January 22nd, 2012 at 9:01 am
Anyone have ESPN Insider? They have an article on Raiders coaching search but I can’t see it.
January 22nd, 2012 at 9:09 am
People have talked about how this team was just a good DC away from being a playoff team, and that may or may not be true (no way to find out).
The common example given is Wade Phillips and what happened in Houston. PHillips does deserve a lot of credit for that turnaround, but it’s not like he took over the same personnel.
They added Jonathan Joseph, a top 3 cover man, and arguably the best coverman in the NFL.
Added JJ Watt, a beast of a DE with a non-stop motor. Also drafted Brooks Reed, an elite edge pass-rusher.
We aren’t adding anyone like this to our defense this year, and really we have to hope that McClain, Houston and Shonasty develop, to offset the extra year/miles on TK, Huff and Seymour.
We can bring in Dick Lebeau, and he will have his hands full making this unit above-average in one offseason.

I disagree.

I believe a decision will be made the middle of next week.
January 22nd, 2012 at 9:26 am
Although, waiting it out to be the last HC position available, isn’t the worst strategy to maybe bring in some quality co-ordinators.
It does, however, put said new HC behind the 8-ball a little when it comes to assembling his staff.

January 22nd, 2012 at 9:29 am
Reggie is looking for a head coach….a person that leads the entire team. I hope he interviews some Special Teams guys.
With no draft picks, it will be hard to add a “JJ Watt” or that pass rusher from San Fran this year.
With the team having little cap room, it may be good just to take the cap hit this year and get rid of the highly paid, no production types that LITTER this roster.
In my opinion, the ceiling for the Raiders up to now was 8-8….to breakthrough, Reggie has to clean house and he started with the head coach.
January 22nd, 2012 at 9:32 am
Last year was just a bizarre year, with a ton of distractions. From Al (RIP), to Hue going power-crazy, to McClain, to CP getting thrown in the middle of the year, and so on.
Next year, will be a breath of fresh air for these guys, with a new OBVIOUS person in charge at GM, and some quality minds across the sidelines.

I have a feeling Morningwood will end up as HC. If it was going to be a GB assistant I think McKbighead would have already hired him so he could start getting his staff in place. It makes sense that he might be waiting for someone who is still in the playoffs. Pagano or Fangio would be good candidates.

Winston Moss already interviewed in Oakland
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on January 22, 2012, 1:07 PM EST
The presumptive favorite for the Raiders head coaching job quietly interviewed for the job before anyone realized it.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Packers assistant head coach Winston Moss met with Raiders G.M. Reggie McKenzie for four hours last Saturday after the Packers completed preparations for their game against the Giants. Mike Tice interviews on Tuesday.
Moss has long been seen as the favorite for the job, although speculation recently is starting to go in another direction. Schefter adds to the growing speculation that Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhingweg has a good chance to get the job.
The Raiders are expected to make their choice by the end of the week.

Very possible. Mornhinweg may have a contract that says he can leave for another OC position, or if he wants to go to us (where, unlike Philly, he would be the offensive play-caller), Philly may opt to let him leave.

Conventional NFL wisdom has always had it that an effective and experienced coordinator will naturally become a successful coach. But Mornhinweg’s excellence at his current position is actually one of the few strikes against him. Good coordinators, it turns out, don’t always make great coaches.
The Eagles learned this the hard way, which led to their study. Back in 1995, Philly exec Joe Banner thought he had hired the perfect coach in Ray Rhodes, a former defensive coordinator for the Packers and 49ers. But after going 30-36-1 in four years with the Eagles, Rhodes was fired. Before his next search began, Banner analyzed 16 “elite” coaches who had appeared in at least two Super Bowls. He was startled to learn that many of the NFL’s greats — Bill Parcells, for instance — weren’t coordinators for a long or particularly successful period of time. And seven elites — Chuck Noll, Jimmy Johnson and Marv Levy among them — hadn’t been NFL coordinators at all.
Since there seemed to be no correlation between the expertise that produces or prevents touchdowns and the leadership that wins titles, Banner says his study “liberated” the Eagles to think outside the traditional pool of candidates. The result was the hiring of Reid, the Packers QB coach at the time, who impressed everyone with his attention to detail, willingness to argue with his then-boss, Holmgren, and reputation as a leader. NYU’s analysis validates the Eagles’ theories: The regular-season winning percentage of former coordinators (49.1%) is ever-so-slightly lower than that of noncoordinators (49.3%).
interesting… so moss without any coordinator experience would fit this theory
January 22nd, 2012 at 10:59 am
oh yeah plus this: 1.
They were between ages 41 and 49.
2. They had at least 11 years of NFL coaching experience.
3. They were assistants on teams that won at least 50 games over a five-year span.
January 22nd, 2012 at 11:00 am
Only thing against Moss it’s that he has never been a HC other than that the study shows that he would be a successful coach. If only it was that easy…

The Oakland Raiders, hoping to hire their next head coach by the end of the week, have already interviewed Packers assistant head coach Winston Moss, according to league sources.
The four-hour interview was held in Green Bay on Jan. 14 after the Packers finished a walk-through practice for their divisional playoff game against the Giants, the sources said.
Next up for the Raiders is an interview with Bears offensive coordinator Mike Tice, who is scheduled to meet with Oakland officials Tuesday at the Senior Bowl.
However, multiple league sources believe Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg has emerged as one of the favorites in Oakland.
Mornhinweg, the sources said, had an impressive interview with Oakland officials. He previously worked with Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie in Green Bay and was the Packers’ quarterbacks coach when Green Bay won the Super Bowl with Brett Favre.
Under Al Davis, Oakland always hired offensive-minded head coaches, and Mornhinweg would continue a decades-long tradition.

Vic Fangio bio from the Niners’ website:
With an extensive coaching background that spans over two decades, Vic Fangio is in his first season as defensive coordinator of the San Francisco 49ers.
Fangio enters his 25th season coaching in the NFL, which includes 11 years of experience as a defensive coordinator for three NFL teams – Carolina (1995-98), Indianapolis Colts (1999-2001) and Houston Texans (2002-05). As a defensive coordinator, Fangio has directed defensive units that have led the NFL or ranked among the top three teams in seven or more major statistical categories.
Fangio most recently served a one year stint as the defensive coordinator for Stanford in 2010, where he led one of the nation’s top defenses. He was unanimously selected as college football’s Defensive Coordinator of the Year by three different media entities.
The Cardinal defense made significant strides under Fangio’s guidance, improving from a 90th ranked unit nationally in 2009 to a defense that ranked in the top-25 nationally in six major defensive categories in 2010. Stanford finished the year ranked 10th in scoring defense (17.4 points/game), 11th in sacks (36), 16th in passing defensive efficiency (112.79), 19th in rushing defense (120.8 yards/game), t-19th in interceptions (18) and 21st in total defense (322.8 yards/game). Within the Pac-10 Conference, the Cardinal improved from 8th to 1st in both scoring defense and sacks, while moving from 9th to 2nd in takeaways and yards allowed. In addition, Stanford posted three Pac-10 shutouts on the year; marking the first time ever the Cardinal had held opponents scoreless in three contests in a single season.
Prior to joining Stanford, Fangio served on the Baltimore Ravens coaching staff from 2006-09 as a special assistant to the head coach and linebackers coach. In his four seasons with Baltimore, the Ravens led the NFL in total defense in 2006, ranked second in 2008 and third in 2009. …

No way Baltimore would even let Hue sells hot dogs in Baltimore.
Remember this article before the season started? I brought it up, but of course, it was just the media picking on the Raiders again.
“As for new Raiders head coach Hue Jackson, the team’s former offensive coordinator, let’s just say there’s very divided opinion around the league when it comes to him. Some view him as a strong motivator, and others consider him something of a manipulator and self-promoter. I know this to be true: When Jackson left his gig as Ravens quarterbacks coach after the 2009 season, joining Oakland as its offensive coordinator, Baltimore and head coach John Harbaugh didn’t mind seeing him go in the least.”

Mad? Yeah, when you have a Stanford Routt in an interview saying that “we play pretty good defense.”
ARGGGGGGGG.
The problem with this team may be the Al cared little about a player’s IQ.

If these guys a really this clueless it explains alot about the mentality they have as players. How could any one of them not see there is a problem? I just do not understand. Obviously “Wonderlick” scores did not factor in to any of Al.s picks

For years, all Al cared about was size, speed and strength. After the JaMarcus debacle, he also began paying attention to character and commitment (for all of DHB’s faults, the man is a super-hard worker). Football IQ just never entered into what Al was looking for.

I’ll be rooting for Giants-Pats. Why? Put a few bucks on the Pats and a lot more on the Giants. Don’t love giving 7 with the Pats but haven’t been real impressed with the Ravens this year, especially on the road.
Don’t view the Giants as any kind of Raiders rival, the only play once every four years and there’s no notable history there, plus most of my friends are G-Men fans, so I’ll probably hang, watch the game with them and root for my money.
Pats 31, Ravens 20
Giants 20, 49ers 13

Marty was just so bad at so many aspects on-and-off the field in Detroit. He took a team that was 9-7 that made the playoffs in ’00 & won 2 games his first year in Detroit with pretty much the same group.
Showed no improvement in his 2nd year, didn’t win a road game his first 2 years in the league, and got fired after just his 2nd season because his players turned on him publicly because they realized he simply was in over his head.

I will trust Reggie’s decision on the next head coach.
Just get someone that will get the Raiders to play faster and hit harder. The Raiders always look like the softest group of football players in the league.
No push from the D-Line.
Gashed in the run defense
No secondary
Offense that is only good for a half
Stop the penalties and start getting guys that want to be out there and not just collecting a check.
The level of production for the dollars paid here in Oakland is disgraceful.

Agreed. But its doubtful that New England would trade a difference maker like Wilfork in his prime years of production.
Much better to trade a player like Seymour who’s best years were behind him for that 1st rounder.
and therein lies the problem in my opinion. Too much reaching for players who’s best years are behind them….the Raiders end of buying the regressing years of these old veterans.

About the only time I can see trading a top pick for a player is something like the Jay Cutler situation.
Where you get an top talent that still has SEVERAL prime production years ahead of him. Which means a player somewhere between 25 and 28 years old.
Once a player gets to 33-35…..they decline quickly

We should use M Reece same way the Pats use A Hernandez.
January 22nd, 2012 at 1:18 pm
To be honest, I was generally indifferent to trading the draft picks before the Carson deal. The reason was I didn’t feel Al Davis put the proper value on the 1st and 2nd round picks and ended up using them to draft reaches.
With Reggie and staff making the picks AND the new salary agreeement for rookies….those top picks are worth a heck of a lot more.
Hue should not have traded those draft picks for 32 year old Carson Palmer
January 22nd, 2012 at 1:18 pm
I wasn’t sure which team I wanted to win this game, but I am finding myself rooting for the Pats.
I think I am still pissed about the Fat Fuk Flop that cost us a SB in 2001. More pissed at the Ravens about that deliberate play than I am at the Pats about the refs fking us in the early part of the playoffs in the Snow Job game.

Too bad we didn’t get Wilfork. He is younger, and he is better against the run. He can also rush the passer, but not as good as Seymour.

Trades for vets like Seymour and Palmer should be no higher than a 2nd rounder…….and that would be a mid-2nd rounder to boot.
AND the team should be on the cusp of doing something great….not just trying to get over.

That’s the story I remember as well Raider O. The old bait and switch.
==============
Neither won a Super Bowl after the deal, so it was actually a good deal for the Raiders, because they got to .500.
That being said , they have under-achieved, and are not getting the most out of highly paid players like Huff, Wimbley, etc.

13-10, Pats, good playoff game…i got a feeling Pats methodically will move down the field, where the Ravens will get a big bomb – they just missed a huge one with Torrey Smith (why wasnt DHB fast, like this guy?)

Agreed, with Al making the picks, those 1st & 2nd rounders were not really worth much.
But when Al passed, it was unfortunate that the team allowed Hue to trade two picks that now have long-term value for a quick fix that didn’t even work

I will say that this is a defensive heavy draft – wouldve been good to get Courtney Upshaw at rush OLB, or Brandon Thompson, DT, Clemson.
Ravens will be lucky to get off the field…just hold onto the ball and keep Brady off. Brady had it going on that last series

They didnt take into account his arm length – something big time Player-Personnel people and scouts regularly acknowledge, along with off – field issues. We missed on that aspect, Russell’s apnea/purple drank addiction, and McClain off-field issues/in Decauter (shot at once, shot someone by ear)
that ENDS with McKenzie here. He is doing due diligence and probably just seeing how candidates would go on with putting a staff together and playcalling strategem, etc.

The Oakland Raiders recently met with Packers assistant head coach/inside linebackers coach Winston Moss in Green Bay about their open head-coaching position, and multiple league sources said the session did not go particularly well.
At this point in their search, the Raiders have only interviewed one person in Oakland — Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg.
Sources said Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie is expected to expand his search for Hue Jackson’s replacement this week. The Raiders also have interviewed Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Dennis Allen and former Miami Dolphins interim coach Todd Bowles, but those interviews happened outside Oakland.
Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy also is on the Raiders’ list of candidates, along with Packers defensive coordinator Dom Capers and New Orleans Saints offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael Jr.

Gallery was the biggest bust with respect to who was passed on
Rothlisberger – SB appearance
Fitz – SB appearance, numerous receiving records
Taylor – tragic death, but S with explosive, jarring tackling
if fact; Phillip Rivers, DeAngelo Hall, Jonathan Vilma, DE Will Smith and Vince Wilfork all came from that draft
then the 2nd bust was Jake Grove – passing on Nick Hardwick, Darnell Dockett and Shaun Phillips – 2004 appeared to be a fantastic draft for Chargers.
