Moss gets his interview, Capers on McKenzie’s radar

By Steve Corkran
Sunday, January 22nd, 2012 at 2:03 pm in Oakland Raiders.

As expected, Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie reached out to Green Bay Packers assistant head coach/linebackers coach Winston Moss. An ESPN report says McKenzie interviewed Moss eight days ago, one day before the Packers’ season ended with a loss to the New York Giants.
All along, Moss has been considered the favorite from this corner, given McKenzie’s strong tied to Moss and the fact McKenzie has told people close to him in the past that he would hire Moss as his head if given the opportunity.
Moss isn’t the only name linked to an interview for the vacancy created by the firing of Hue Jackson on Jan. 10. CBS’ Charlie Casserley said today that McKenzie has requested permission from the Packers to interview defensive coordinator Dom Capers.
McKenzie has not spoken with the media since his introductory news conference Jan. 10. A Raiders official said he is could not confirm Moss’ interview and that the team won’t comment publicly until a coach is hired.
Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Mike Tice is scheduled to interview with McKenzie on Tuesday.

The Oakland Raiders recently met with Packers assistant head coach/inside linebackers coach Winston Moss in Green Bay about their open head-coaching position, and multiple league sources said the session did not go particularly well.

At this point in their search, the Raiders have only interviewed one person in Oakland — Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg.

Sources said Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie is expected to expand his search for Hue Jackson’s replacement this week. The Raiders also have interviewed Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Dennis Allen and former Miami Dolphins interim coach Todd Bowles, but those interviews happened outside Oakland.

Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy also is on the Raiders’ list of candidates, along with Packers defensive coordinator Dom Capers and New Orleans Saints offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael Jr.

Shoot, I would do that, you know he is waiting to I interview Pagano, Fewell, etc.

I like Can Cameron, he killed us when he was calling plays for SD.

Like I said Reggie is taking it slow. Lots of skeletons, crap, fat overpaid players on this roster…

Getting rid of Herrera is taking a little longer, lol….

Yeah that was the 2005 draft when Millen took Williams, after he sat out a year….

    Millen drafted:

Charles Rogers 2nd overall in 2003
Roy Williams 7th overall in 2004
Mike Williams 10th overall in 2005

see Al wasn’t the worst GM in history….just the second worst.

If the Moss interview didn’t “go particularly well,” it means that Moss waltzed in here expecting to be just offered the job, and when Reggie asked the hard questions, Moss was “Uh…well…um…”

Good. It means that Reggie doesn’t care who his former BFFs were, and just wants the best man for the job.

I like this guy more and more all the time.

    =============================================

I doubt money had anything to do with it, unless he was demanding Gruden-level $$$ (which would be totally undeserved for a first-time HC). If Reggie took the job after turning down other GM offers, it means he was given TOTAL control. Doubt Mark was even in the room for the interview.

  36. lefty12 Says:

Dan,you are assuming he was offered the job and there is nothing to back that up since Reggie has at least 2 more interviews scheduled.

I thought Spikes was suppose to be slower than McClain, but it doesn’t look like it in the field. I know McClain ran a faster 40.

  40. HayesDaze37 Says:

The Raiders’ new DC will be Winston Moss.

The new HC will decide on keeping Saunders (my preference at this point)…but if the new HC is an Offensive specialist (another preference), Saunders still may not be calling plays.

This here NFL requires bad-ass Defenses to win tough ball games…but if the Offense can’t put up 24-ish points per game nowadays, that team’s going to be left in the dust.

An ability to win tough, low-scoring games is one thing…but a team that as a rule wins games 18-15, 17-14, etc., will be blown away at crunch-time. Ask the Denver Tebows.

Give me a HC who will (read: know how to) allow an Offense to regularly put up points in the 24-point range, and a Defense to keep the opponents under 20, and I’ll show you team that is a Super Bowl contender.

During the presser something was mentioned about budget. Mark had told him what he’s willing to spend. We will probably never know. But I just don’t understand how they go from your my guy if I get the gig to having a bad interview. Not to mention the interview was never reported and Moss passed up the chance to say he had an interview when ask about the Raiders.

    Seems weird

If that is who the new HC picks, correct. If the new HC wants someone else it will be someone else.Gone are the days where the GM hires the HCs assistants.

The only thing that I can think of is that the interview was a disaster. Maybe Reggie was asking tough questions, and Moss didn’t know what he was talking about. IF (and I’m saying if) that was the case, we wouldn’t want him as our HC anyway. We got our fill of “entitlement” with Lance and Hue.

Also, interviewing Moss, then asking for permission to interview Capers makes no sense unless Moss is no longer in the running. Looks like Marty Morhninweg will be our next coach. Hopefully he changes his name to something easier to spell.
