Not excited about any of these HC candidates. Seems like they are all bottom feeders. I suppose that’s better than a used car salesman.
January 23rd, 2012 at 12:04 pm
Linebackers have to drop into coverage sometimes its part of the game. If Wimbly cant cover then he should only be in during “Obvious” running downs only or be a a part of the DL so he wont have to drop into coverage.

How do you figure? Reggie’s interviewed a bunch of highly-respected candidates, and (possibly) come up with an under-the-rader-but-respected DC. Worked out pretty well for Atlanta and Mike Smith, no?
————————
Are you kidding me? Highly respected candidates? That’s funny. Do you really think that before the announcement of Reggie’s hiring that he wasn’t aware he was being hired? Of course he knew, You would think he had a plan. He is wasting valuable time with these BS interviews. We should already have a coach and be evaluating the players and staff right now. Come on’ man.
==========================================
Marty – Considered a top OC
Bowles – Interviewed by other teams for the HC job
Allen – Considered a top DC
Carmichael — OC for a top offense
You will also note there is NONE of the usual media eye-rolling like there was with Al’s searches. We’re getting good candidates this time. Don’t get mad just because none of them is named Jon Gruden.

I hope all those dipsh!ts on this blog who constantly rip on the Raiders ProBowl special teamers were watching HOW the losers of the championship games lost.
Their special teams blew it!!
Looks like punter, long snapper and kicker are the ONLY three positions that Reggie need not be worried about on this team…

Wimbley needs to be a 4-3 DE or 3-4 OLB. He has no business being a 4-3 SLB. The defense is a mess.

There is a reason why Moringwheg has not got a 2nd chance at being a head coach.
Out of all the coaches from the “Holmgren Tree”, Morningwheg was weak link of the bunch. Obviously.
—-
Ya the reason is he has been the offensive coordinator for one of the better offenses the past years..
^^^^^^^^
Reid calls the plays in Philly bruh. Plus all of a sudden some you want the West Coast offense back here in Oakland with Moring running the show, and would rather Morningwheg ahead of Gruden?? LMAO!!
Some guy named Mike Vick has inflated Philly offensive numbers also.
—-
He’s the OC/Asst HC.
Reid isnt the only one making decisions.
Its not all about play calling.
Gameplan is almost as if not more important
^^^^^^^^
Philly hasn’t gone deep in the playoffs in who knows how long either.
A big NO to Morningwheg as Head Coach of the Raiders!
Rather have Del Rio and then get Del Rio some good Coordinators!
—-
Not letting this off the hook.
5 NFC Championship games in 8 years.
1 Super Bowl.
Not deep into the playoffs???
And again you used the logic of not getting deep into the playoffs, then you suggested Del Rio!?!?!?!

We basically have 2 options with selecting a new HC:
1) Hire a former HC that has a losing record (Capers, Morninhweg, Tice etc.)
2) Hire a guy that has been succesful as a coordinator and give him his 1st shot as a HC (Moss, Allen, Bowles etc..)
Which would you prefer?
I’m leaning toward #2.
==========================================
Problem with #2 is you have a brand new GM who has never been a GM before. If you couple that to a HC who has never been a HC before along with coordinators who have never been coordinators before, it is a complete recipe for disaster. If Reggie hires a HC with no prior HC experience, he should make sure one of the coordinators does, like Mike Nolan.

None of the guys you mentioned inspire any more faith for me in regards to the Raiders becoming true contenders. If they were only options as cordinators and not head coaches I could see that, And Be fine with it. Just not to lead our team. I understand when a new GM comes in he wants to bring in his guy. It’s funny that some of you guys have such black-and-white views on who or what the head coach should be.
The truth is that it’s not as easy as looking at someone’s resume and deciding whether or not they are “qualified”.
All that matters is putting the right coach in the right situation. Let him pick a staff who he knows he can work with, and who share his vision. Let him implement his own scheme, and help him find players who fit that scheme.
Basically, you have to catch lightning in a bottle. You have to cultivate the right situation, no matter who the coach is or what their background includes.
This is why a coach who wins a Superbowl with one team has NEVER gone on to another team and experienced the same type of success.

January 23rd, 2012 at 12:51 pm
Just like it was Kyle Wiliams fault that their offense couldn’t convert 3rd downs..One stat I thought was funny…
Smith was 7 out of, oh I give up…for 79 yards in the first half! 1 was for 73 yards…the other 6 was for 6 yards…and at the 2 minute warning…with Smith throwing into the grass, ran off a whopping 18 seconds off of the clock! But…they want to kill Kyle and his family…very classless!

Any coach hired by this competent and well regarded GM candidate is fine with me.
Not so much caught up in the name, I hope that the head coach hires a full-time OC and DC and allows them to run their respective sides of the ball.

I’m open to bring in a Denver coach just so we can go slap another 50 plus points on them with their guy.
Think Al would ever let one of his coaches go interview for an AFC West team? No! He would have fired them for wanting to do it. And throw them out of the building and tell them good luck. Then he would call the other team and tell them how he just had to fire the guy for raping Trask and embezzling from the team.
I miss Al!
January 23rd, 2012 at 12:56 pm
Seymour, I still remember when folks in here blamed the loss to the Lions on Palmer. Because of one play where he missed a wide open receiver. Actually the receiver got his hands on the ball. But LMAO! In a game where he had a 113 QB rating, they were blaming him. Many of the clowns in here have their heads firmly planted up their keisters.
==========================================
Exactly. Dude complete 80% of his passes, and that is not enough. It is terrifying to read the posts in here. How anyone can be successful in this kind of environment is incredible. OK, we don’t want Mohringweg, Capers, Tice, what do you guys want? Should we go over to that Time Machine Hot Tub and go get Tom Landry or Vince Lombardi and bring him back to the future?

^^^^^^^^
Get over it. Morningwheg would a crappy choice as head coach for the Raiders….PERIOD!
Hence, why you don’t haven’t seen him hired in the last 4 years to be a head coach anywhere else.
Get a clue.
I guess you would be happy to go back to the West Coast offense under Morning ahead of a West Coast offense lead by a REAL head coach like Job Gruden who has a SUPER BOWL WIN?

I would be more than happy with an “un-sexy” choice whomever it may be if they are competent. As I said to YoungAmerican I think the last 10 years are making me jaded, I don’t want to be that way. I guess I just think a real strong personality and a good track record for a HC is the best remedy for the Raiders inconsistent ways (even if it is expensive). I think if we were a different team over the last decade we could afford to take a gamble so to speak on some of the guys mentioned. Call me crazy but there is a lot of stuff that needs to be ironed out in Oaktown. A rookie GM and rookie HC make me nervous. I think it would be easier for Reggie to be succesful and do his job with the right guy at HC, I’m just not so sure even his “gut” truly knows who that man is.

Mike Singletary deserves all the credit for changing the culture and instilling a hard hitting attitude to the defense. They also beefed up their o-line and built the team around frank gore.

3-4 or 4-3 doesn’t matter. The Raiders’ needs are similar regardless.
If they go 3-4, they need a defensive lineman who can play 0-tech NT. If they go 4-3, they need a guy who can play 1-tech or 2-tech DT. Either way – a gap plugger who can hold up against the run in base formations.
If they go 3-4, they need a big-time playmaking OLB on the blind side who can make things happen behind the line of scrummage. If they go 4-3, they need a defensive end who can help seal the edge AND give the Raiders’ 4-man pass rush a boost. This way they can move Lamarr Houston to his natural position, which is 3-tech DT.
And either way, they need some help in the secondary.

I think the lst part of your post is right on. What the Raiders need is pass rush help, and a run stuffing ILB. And they are going to have to come the cheap FA or UDFA route. We have no other choice. A guy like Larry Grant from SF would be perfect. But most of all we really really really need pass rushers here on the edge. Look at the final four. That is something they all had. We didn’t. And it killed us.

Houston’s natural position is 3-tech DT, but I think he’d be a good fit at 5-tech too.

Wimbley played his first 60 something games as a 3-4 OLB.
In the same amount of games he had like 15 more sacks then James Harrison.

Who do the Raiders have who have contributed to the same level that Vernon Davis, Patrick Willis, and Justin Smith have for the 49ers? I don’t see a single player on the roster who fits that bill.

A defensive coach does not mean you will have a good defensive team and vice versa for offense. Actually its usually the opposite.
That Said, Out of these coaches I would prefer Moss for headcoach, like his attitude and fire and I believe he can lead men, which I think is the most important quality. I believe he would hire a DC perhaps Perry the GB DB coach to call plays and run the D. I see Moss’s role as that like a Mike tomlin.

Wimbley is paid $11 million. He is paid about $1 million less than Demarcus Ware.
Look, these top paid talent owe Al Davis. Al trusted these guys and sometimes you just gotta make a play.
The fact that the Raiders have 5 players getting big time dollars on defense alone is ridiculous. Those five players should have made a play in those losses….should have led their teammates….again, check cashers.

139. Brilliant trade by Davis but sh*t picks that failed to pan ruined the plan.
Gruden came in with Allen and ran a George Allen “Over the Hill gang” strategy with older veteran players running the show.
When those older players inevitably crapped out most teams would’ve been mortgaged and without picks to replace the oldsters.
Davis scammed Tampa into taking Gruden in a deal that soon became illegal and neve rto be seen again but it came back to bite his azz in the worst way possible thanks to Callahan.
Brilliant move that should’ve panned and failed.

——————-
You realize there’s a lot more to a player than size and body type, right?
Ratliff is an exception to the rule because, even though he’s tall and light, he’s VERY effective at gaining leverage, and using his strength to occupy multiple blockers.
Those are not skills Tommy Kelly has. Tommy Kelly can shed blockers, but he’s not adept at taking on multiple blockers and clogging running lanes, nor is he intelligent enough to maintain gap discipline.
January 23rd, 2012 at 2:05 pm
While Chucky B and Al Davis catch a lot of flak for this defense….and rightfully so.
Let’s remember those raggedy overpaid check cashers that couldn’t find the internal strength to make a play on those 95+ yard drives near the end of the season.
Their inability to just play good gap defense…tackle..the fundamentals that any $10+ million player should be able to do.
To get outclassed by Sterling Moore? Routt should give money back just for that.
Get some new players on defense….and take the cap hit today to start fresh next year.
Clean house Reggie!

We don’t have to have a defensive minded head coach. That is not going to fix tackling and bad angles. We have defensive coaches on he staff every year. What we need is some FOOTBALL PLAYERS. Not the height, speed, strength guys that was coveted here before.
Dennis Allen, “We’re going to be built off of speed and athleticism. We want to be a very fast, violent, aggressive type of defense. I firmly believe that defensive football is not nearly as much about X’s and O’s as it is about the way you play the game, the culture of your defense. I think if you look at where i’ve been in the past, speed and athleticism and aggressive football players is the type of thing we’re looking for.”
This scares me. His defense in Denver and the one he was a part of in Orleans didn’t make me shake in my boots. We can do better!

I know most people on here don’t like Hue, you have to admit he was a good OC. Surprised he’s not getting much run for an OC job yet. I do think he would do a good job with the Steelers Offense, they have some playmakers over there, some similar to ours. Maybe his whole power trip at the end of the season has Headcoaches worried.
January 23rd, 2012 at 2:09 pm
I Would agree with the lack of gap discipline part.
However I do think there is something to the idea that Raider players in general have had trouble with this issue for 9 years running.
It is curious to me that they dont improve year in and year out in that regard.
I would be interested to see our players with a different voice in their ears telling them what is important on defense.
It seems Raider defensive linemen have sold out to get to the QB at all costs for years and thus we are suseptable to the delayed runs and screens, etc.
Maybe if Kelly were asked to maintain gaps as his job description instead of seeling out to get to the QB, we would have different results all these years.
Just a thought…
Because it’s not only Kelly with this problem, and it seems to span multiple regimes of coordinators and players…
January 23rd, 2012 at 2:09 pm
Allen’s defense in Denver was pretty spectacular, all things considered. Lower-tier players on the defensive line and in the secondary. Miller, Dumervil, and Bailey are really the only pieces Allen had to work with. Still managed a very impressive streak of eliminating opposing offenses from the equation, giving Tebow a chance to put up 10 points and still win games.
In New Orleans when he was the secondary coach, he was part of a defense that led the league in turnovers.

If Allen was that good, don’t you think the Broncos woulda made him head coach before Fox? Rotten deal when we had a HC and dump him. And since Davis fired him, people be haters on him.

Slim, youre wrong, Hue was not a good coach,…hes not even a bad head coach,…hes an asst coach at best. Maybe best suited to drive the team bus. And the reason Denver chose Fox over a young upcoming star like Dennis Allen is because John Elway has had brain damage the last ten years.

Daraider09,
You are the one going with your heart. Davis may have hired undermanned coaches, but they are NFL coaches nontheless.
Those guys don’t make plays man.
Its easy to blame Al Davis and just say the coaches are junk….
I will bet that if those guys on the defense were put on the open market, those salaries come down by more than half and a few of them are role players…like Money Warren in New England….not full on starters expected to be difference makers.
Wimbley is a nickle rusher…TK is a depth guy….Seymour is past his prime….
Raiders overrate these guys…go young and get the cap space freed up. They have taken you as far as they can go

Remember, the only reason that Gruden left was that Al Davis promised him control over the coaches in the contract extention and when he met with his agent and they went over the contract over dinner before signing it, that clause had disappeared. Gruden was pi$$ed and wanted nothing else to do with Coach Davis.

SnB offense defense specialteams:
****************************************************
So all these Raider PLAYERS are to blame, yet it’s been an epidemic for 10 straight years and it took hall of fame calibur players to make our defense play somewhat respectable (2000-2002), still not great. Every other season it’s been the same song year in and out: lack of gap discipline, lack of tackling, play fakes completely baffling our defenses, giving up that one or two big plays per game that beats you.
Always the same characteristics of the Raider defenses and yet ONE thing has been in common all this time: Al Davis is the defensive coordinator.
But what you’re saying is, we’ve just been so stupid that we consistently nab bad, talentless players to man our defense every single year and stick with talentless (depth) players like Tommy Kelly for too long?
Wow…
Thats all I have to say.
And by the way, the reason former Raider players go on the market and make less is because they have such low production and numbers in Davis’ defense all these years. They cant inflate their numbers in a contract year like they could on most every other team in the NFL.
I mean, Charles Woodson consistently had under 4 INTs per season with us. Usually it was about 1 or 2 per season. Same with Nnamdi.
Are you saying they werent good when they played for us and once they left they became good?
My point is and has been the same for many years now:
Lets put these guys in position to succeed. Kinda like Harbaugh this season.
Werent Donte Whitner and Carlos Rodgers pretty much first round busts for their careers in Buffalo and Washington? Well put them in a system that fits them and all of a sudden they thrive. All of a sudden they are in position to make big hits and INTs every week?
Good coaching wins championships and breeds consistency, espically on defense, which we’ve lack forever.
I’d love to see what the “nickel rusher” Kam Wimbley would do in a defense like Pittsburg’s at OLB…I think the results would be slightly different than the handful of sacks he gave us this year, and poor attempts to cover antonio gates and wide receivers.
Wimbley is a pass rusher, not a SLB in a 4-3, with so much coverage responsibilities.

I’m narrowing my choice as to who should be hired as the next HC.I just read whoever DK wants and eliminate that candidate.
January 23rd, 2012 at 3:48 pm
Reilly’s another short sighted sports writer. The problem with his concept of remembering the positive things about a person with questionable moral character like Paterno is that you can do that with anyone. We can remember Osama Bin Laden for the positive things, too. He was an ally of our against the Soviet Union. Can’t have it both ways.

He made the Raiders a competitor and brought them back to respectability and you people forget the most important thing with Gruden.

Can’t blame Gruden for staying in the broadcast booth.
Already won his ring, gets paid more than many NFL HCs with about 1/10th the workload, gets plenty of face time on T.V., gets to do all those cheesy QB draft appearances on ESPN.
He is probably loving life right now.
But if he has any competitive spirit left in him…..what better story would there be than to twice save the Oakland Raiders from Al’s dreadful hands?

Actually, you are missing the most vital component of a competitor.
The desire to compete, and win.
Gruden is not afraid of hard work.
It’s about the challenge, Victory, and Glory.
Gruden doesn’t become a HOF head coach from the broadcast booth.
He has a chance IF he returns to coaching.
Not saying He will, just pointing out some obvious motivations to return.
I do believe if He were to return, he’d want to come back to Oakland.

Sullivan44, # 302,
True. It’s a mystery to me why anyone fears Gruden. The Raiders have only had 3 good coaches: Madden, Flores and Gruden. In all my posts I preach on how AL and his shenanigans placed the Raiders in the AFC cellar for 29 season while always mentioning by disclaimer (”the Gruden anamoly”). Even then AL was so demented and paranoid he dismissed Gruden to satisfy his imaginary fear that Gruden may become more powerful than he (AL) and therefore usurp the organization from AL. It’s too bad that didn’t happen.
Now, it would be a miracle if Gruden returned, and am not sure why the fans are resistant to that.

I mean, wouldn’t it be natural for anyone in Reggie’s position to believe that picking Gruden would make the new GM look as if he were trying to be AL, as if he were retreating into the past instead of making his own way as GM and leading his team into a new era?

I didn’t think we were talking about Davis, I thought we were talking about Tampon Bay and Gruden. Jon Gruden ended his last month as a coach winless. 0-4. Since that time, Tampon Bay has amassed a stellar 17-31 record or a winning percentage of .354. Now, you can blame that all on Raheem Morris but funny thing is Morris got a job immediately in the league while Gruden still hasn’t years later. Do you wonder who people in the league hold accountable for Tampon Bay’s demise? Sure isn’t Raheem Morris. And the saddest part is the EXACT SAME thing happened here under his watch.

Dennis Allen did a very good job of coaching up Rod Coleman with Atl, and then the Saints Dline. Since Waufle was the lst one to go, right now as they are coming around the bend I would say it’s Dennis Allen by a length………

28th in interceptions,
22nd in rushing yardage allowed.

Hardly non-sense. You were referring that Gruden was winning with QBs like Chris Simms, B.J and Jeff Garcia. The suggestion there, without mentioning the defense, is that Gruden was this offensive genious that could do no wrong.
Actually he took Tony Dungy’s defense coupled with Derrick Brooks, John Lynch and…yes…Warren Sapp’s leadership with Monte Kiffin and rode that horse to the championship game.
Whereupon Callahan’s dumb azz couldnt change up the calls and therefore handed them the victory

Alex,
Those Raiders on the roster need to either restructure or be broomed out.
Let’s say that a new coach inproves their play…those guys aren’t superstars if Vince Lombardi comes back.
I don’t see the ceiling for Wimbley being Peppers or Ware….or Huff approaching Paloumalu or Reed….or TK making a differnence like Ngata or Seymour matching Wilfork in his old age.
And Routt is just ok…certainly not top 5
Those contracts are a millstone on this team and will have to be adjusted….those guys are among the top 3 to 5 paid for their position.
Either they restructure or they have to go…..take the cap hit and get on with fixing the team for real.
The bandaiding ain’t going to work.

Why McKenzie will succeed:
He will pick the best candidate for HC.
He will aid the HC in picking the best coordinators.
He will establish a scouting system that will provide the organization with top-notch evaluations on free agents, draft picks and undrafted prospects.
He will have an advanced scouting team that will dissect our upcoming opponents and their tendencies.
In short, he will be the best GM in the NFL, book it.
January 23rd, 2012 at 5:28 pm
303, spot on.
It’s a QB / DC league. Been preaching it for years.
WHich is why the Palmer move had to be made. Upgrades our QB spot, gives us at least a top-15 QB, which is a MUST to make the playoffs.
Nothing was happening here with JC, or Boller, or Pryor, or a mid-1st rounder this draft.

January 23rd, 2012 at 5:33 pm
lol Twocents.
Too easy, I gotta play devil’s advocate, k?
Why McKenzie will fail:
Peter principle.
No experience choosing HCs or coordinators.
Was one of about 5 guys who checked off on a prospect before GB would draft him.
Talent (scouting) can’t be “taught” to others.
No ability to transfer his “gut feelings” onto a system and other co-workers.
Doesn’t have strong football minds around him.
Interviews (his short work sample) nothing to be proud of.

Wade Phillips did it in Texas in one off-season with 80% same roster that was ranked 30th last year.

Why would you say that. Are you a glass half full fan or half empty?
I bet Reggie will evaluate talent the “Non-Al” way. What would we think differently?
Let’s give this guy the benefit of the doubt. He inherited a roster that has issues on Defense or we just need the right coach as we should win and compete in our Division right away.
Doesn’t he get credit for the current GB roster?

I believe Silver’s report about why Hue was fired. I think Mark’s running everything. The only good thing about it is that he’ll probably wind up firing all of Al’s guys too, because he probably hates his dad’s guts. Basically, our new owners/meddler is Al Davis without the penchant for man defense, corners, and wide outs. Everything else will be just like the old man, like this coaching search.

Reggie was a candidate for GM in Chicago and for Indy and was a candidate for Houston and Atlanta.

Wade Phillips had a roster of young players like Cushing, JJ Watt, Conner Barwin…with true difference makers like DeMarco Ryans and Jonathan Joseph.
The Raiders have NOTHING compairing to that.
WE have Tyvon Branch and Matt Shaughnessy that could be comparable talents.
The rest?
You will be disappointed.

Sully,
Lol, thanks for your honesty. I know it’s been 9 years since. We’ve competed.
We are on the bottom part of the up-curve. It’s like when the market tanked in March of 2009. Buy Raider stock today, the future is bright, Al is gone, RIP.
Gonna take Reggie a minute to air out all the stank from 9 years of losing, 7 years of 11 losses or more.
We need to believe and support our Raiders now more than ever.

honestly curious. what have you liked about McKenzie’s moves since coming to Oakland?
Coaching search = scattered, coaches are turning him down, only 2nd interview guy so far has ONE year experience as DC, so is technically more raw than Hue.
Fired a guy with a known, quantifiable talent (offense, points) after one season (best season in last 10 years).
Honestly, what’s been great?

Hue was only made head coach because of a “unique” hiring arrangement.
Hue is not head coach material. He proved it in Oakland. Couldn’t manage the team…and only focused on his responsibilities as an average offensive coordinator…who then threw everyone from the bridge but himself.
Raiders deserve AND WILL GET better.

It will take 2 years to be able to say if Reggie was a good hire.
We all have wanted a GM for some time and now we have one.
He comes from an organization that during his tenure won 2 SB, has had only 2 QB’s, and appeared In the playoffs numerous times.
I said years ago that The raiders would not start winning again until the Old Man died or retired.
Gonna take Reggie some time. I liked Hue, alot, but a new GM never keeps the old coach, never.
We are going throug a new ERA, and I for one and optimistic. It can’t get worse, can it?
Take your time Reggie, it’s not like our division is gonna change, no matter who you pick as our next HC, take our time.

I don’t think you can compare our situation to most. Most GM jobs come open because the other GM gets fired, which usually happends because the team had a bad year and they want change from the top to the bottom, so firing the HC is usually what happends. We had a unique situation where the long time owner/GM Passed. Our HC had a decent year considering everything that happend in his first year as a HC.
If Reggie would of kept Hue I would of ben more than fine with it, I understand he wants his own guy and Im fine with that to.
