Report: GM says coach could be hired by Saturday

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, January 23rd, 2012 at 8:48 am in Oakland Raiders.

Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie said upon arrival in Mobile, Ala., for the Senior Bowl he could have a head coach in place by the end of the week.

“It could happen by Saturday,’’ McKenzie told CSN-Bay Area.

McKenzie did not confirm or deny any candidates reported by various media outlets. Regarding an NFL Network report that an interview with Packers assistant Winston Moss did not go well, McKenzie said, “That’s far from the truth.’’

Among the candidates who McKenzie has reportedly either talked to or plans to talk to include Miami interim coach (since replaced by Joe Philbin) Todd Bowles, Denver defensive coordinator Dennis Allen, Philadelphia assistant head coach and offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg and Chicago offensive coordinator Mike Tice.

Eight scouts made the trip to Mobile to evaluate talent, McKenzie said. He said he is still evaluating the current staff and “I’m not in a hurry to hire and fire, at all.’’

Current coaches, those under contract and those whose contracts have expired, will be retained or dismissed at the discretion of the new head coach, McKenzie said.

Two assistants have already found other jobs _ defensive line coach Mike Waufle (St. Louis Rams) and wide receivers coach Sanjay Lal (New York Jets).

Dennis Allen (born September 22, 1972) is the Defensive Coordinator for the Denver Broncos of the National Football League.

Allen previously coached for the New Orleans Saints, Atlanta Falcons, Tulsa University and his alma mater, Texas A&M University. His father Grady Allen was also a standout linebacker for the Aggies and later in the NFL for the Falcons. Dennis and his wife, Alisson, have a son, Garrison and a daughter, Layla.[not verified in body]

Allen is known for his aggressive “bend but don’t break” defensive play calling that gives up a lot of yards, but also forces many sacks and turnovers. In 2009 in New Orleans, the Saints ranked 3rd in interceptions despite giving up 321 yards per game.[1] Allen’s Broncos are currently in the bottom half of yards allowed, ranked 23rd, but are 5th in the league in sacks.[2

True. For his sake though he’d probably be better off if he can get an OC job. Baltimore may be interested with Cam Cameron rumored to be on the outs there.

I think as a position coach you’re largely limited by the talent at the position. Not so much with something like o-line where you’re basically coordinating a team within a team, but as a QB coach the outcome is probably at least 90% on the player in most cases.

I think they should give Fangio a look. He was named National Asst. Coach of the Year at Stanford last year and look at how the Niners D performed this season right through yesterday’s game where without a couple of fumbled punts they’d be in the Super Bowl right now thanks to their D.

Sad to see Hue go, as most of you well know. But two vet, respected coaches like Fangio as HC leading the D and Saunders as OC leading the offense. I could live with that while keeping the roster on offense in tact.

The most recent example of a coach getting canned and then immediately being hired on by another team as HC would be Eric Mangini, but there have been others as well.

Because the man can flat out coach the D. He maximized talent at Stanford. We know Stanford is no SEC school. He maximized talent at SF. Who are those guys flying around?

Eli was the hottest QB coming into yesterday’s game. Victor Cruz had 8 catches for 142 yds at the half. They completely shut down all of Eli’s offense in the 2nd half and OT. That was INCREDIBLE. We can only dream about doing that here in Oak.

So glad the Whiners lost, otherwise we would have been practically force fed to hear the local radio shows 95.7 overhyping this team like crazy the next two weeks being arrogant and annoying all week long.

Now I can actually root for a team to win in the Super Bowl! A Pats vs Niners Super Bowl would have been TERRIBLE!!

I agree with this. Ravens def coordinators have gotten plenty of HC jobs and its beena mixed bag. They have lots of turnover there and they continue to be good/great every season.
