The Dennis Allen file

Broncos defensive coordinator Dennis Allen, reportedly the subject of a second interview with general manager Reggie McKenzie in the search for a new head coach, came to Denver after three years coaching defensive backs with the New Orleans Saints.

Allen, 40, presided over a defense that ranked 20th in total defense, 24th in scoring defense, sixth in third-down conversions, 28th in interceptions and 10th in sacks. The Broncos were 18th in passing yardage allowed and 22nd in rushing yardage allowed.

He described his defensive philosophy this way before the Broncos started in the season in an interview on the club’s Web site:

“We’re going to be built off of speed and athleticism. We want to be a very fast, violent, aggressive type of defense. I firmly believe that defensive football is not nearly as much about X’s and O’s as it is about the way you play the game, the culture of your defense. I think if you look at where i’ve been in the past, speed and athleticism and aggressive football players is the type of thing we’re looking for.”

Allen started his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Texas A&M, where he played as a defensive back. He was the secondary coach at Tulsa in 2000-01, served as a defensive assistant with emphasis on the defensive line and quality control with the Atlanta Falcons from 2002-05 and was hired as the assistant defensive line coach by the New Orleans Saints in 2006 before being promoted to secondary coach. He was the secondary coach on the New Orleans team that won the Super Bowl against the Indianapolis Colts.

Found this on Allen, #1 ranked defense with this guy!

Dennis Allen was a Melbourne based drug dealer who was reported to have murdered many victims.

Allen, nicknamed Mr. Death or Mr. D, was believed to have been involved in up to 13 underworld murders, including the dismembering of a Hells Angels biker with a chainsaw.

One of Allen’s Denver assistants is Richard Smith, who’s been a DC before. I think he’d be the favorite.

    Duck,

that guy was AWFUL for the Texans.

what about Bill Johnson or Wayne Nunnely ???

    ===============================================

Remember, Allen would be the real DC, so Smith’s skill level as Coordinator wouldn’t matter.

  • DKnight007

Allen looks like a bit of a reach as a head coach at this point of his career IMO.

McKenzie said he is still evaluating the current staff and “I’m not in a hurry to hire and fire, at all.’’

    ^^^^^^^
Interesting. He sure was in a hurry to fire Hue, ahead clowns like Bresnahan and Herrera??

    Oy vey.

I hope the Moss interview not going well, is “far from the truth” because if it was true…that would be disturbing, since McK and Moss are supposed to be boys and all.

Morningwheg will be a stiff for this organization.

He will bring zero energy and will not even come close to doing what Huey did when it comes to renergizing the Raiders fans and the community.

The best coach available we already had, and fired him. All we can hope for is major improvement on D. Cause I can see the O takin a step back…

    ^^^^^^^
That’s why I would like to see Saunders retained as OC for some continuity is retained on the offensive side of the ball.

Dismemberment with a chainsaw. Jesus how big was the guys member that it took a chainsaw to chop it off!

  • 504 Raider

Allen is intriguing as HC but he doesn’t strike me as a guy that will send Seymour or RoMac to the locker room in the second quarter and say this at the post game presser:

    Can’t play wit’em.
    Can’t coach wit’em.
    Can’t win wit’em.
    Can’t do it.

Key decision here is to hire a DC as the head coach. This would be unheard of under Al and that’s exactly why we need a HC with a defensive background. Three keys to making the playoffs – defense, o-line and coaching. Let’s take care of the 2 out of 3.

Allen probably didn’t want to get cranky sideline phone calls every time a blitz or zone package didn’t work.

  • DKnight007

Sooooo…if this kid Allen is hired, who is going to be the DC??

Better be a vet and an experienced LEGIT one.

Raven LB coach DEAN PEES would be perfect, but this coaching carousal game is about who you know and who you have worked with before and all that crap. Allen would probably bring in another orange pony D assistant as his DC.

    Ugh.

I am not inspired by taking a gamble on a fresh faced coach like this with ZERO experience.

I think I would rather a Mike Tice, Jack Del Rio type. Conservative, no nonsense, pretty valuable experience as HC’s before.

Not a guy who was a first time DC this season who probably cant command the room because he looks like he’s 17 years old.

    Not rerally interested.

By the way, lots of good things being said about Mornhinweg lately.

    We’ll see.

Sometimes guys need a second chance.
From what I’ve heard and read he knows his football inside out.

Well, so does Norvell Turner though, right?

I bet this search is taking so long because Reggie wants to find out from each candidate who would they bring in for OC and DC. And Reggie is using his “Gut” to see which trio he likes the best.

  • RaiderRockstar

    Duck,

if Allen gets the HC job and the DC “doesn’t matter” why not just retain Bresnahahn & Biekert then?

  • aig-raiders

Allen would call his own D plays. I wouldnt worry about who the DC is if Allen as the hire. I think more important is will he retain Saunders?

  • DKnight007

I would rather have Jack Del Rio coach the Raiders ahead of stiffs like Morningwheg, Tice and Capers and have him hire good coordinators.

He would probably keep Saunders as OC.

Because Allen’s going to want coaches he trusts and knows can teach. Bres and Biekert? Don’t really fit that bill.

Former DB coaches make the best DC’s because they have to know the entire defense as everything is in front of them to see. They must know the assignments of all 11 guys.

That’s why DL and LB coaches don’t really fare well as DC’s because they only mastered 33% or 66% of the D.

  • daraider09

Well in all fairness, we’re calling guys stiffs based on nothing but past mistakes that are 5 or more years old.

People learn and change and grow.

Especially people who know their football well.

    ****************************************************
    I agree with this.
I have noticed that DB coahces seem to have more success than other parts of the defense when they get into positions with more authority, but I couldnt put my finger on the reasons.

    This is a smart post.
