The Dennis Allen file

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, January 23rd, 2012 at 11:12 am in Oakland Raiders.

Broncos defensive coordinator Dennis Allen, reportedly the subject of a second interview with general manager Reggie McKenzie in the search for a new head coach, came to Denver after three years coaching defensive backs with the New Orleans Saints.

Allen, 40, presided over a defense that ranked 20th in total defense, 24th in scoring defense, sixth in third-down conversions, 28th in interceptions and 10th in sacks. The Broncos were 18th in passing yardage allowed and 22nd in rushing yardage allowed.

He described his defensive philosophy this way before the Broncos started in the season in an interview on the club’s Web site:

“We’re going to be built off of speed and athleticism. We want to be a very fast, violent, aggressive type of defense. I firmly believe that defensive football is not nearly as much about X’s and O’s as it is about the way you play the game, the culture of your defense. I think if you look at where i’ve been in the past, speed and athleticism and aggressive football players is the type of thing we’re looking for.”

Allen started his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Texas A&M, where he played as a defensive back. He was the secondary coach at Tulsa in 2000-01, served as a defensive assistant with emphasis on the defensive line and quality control with the Atlanta Falcons from 2002-05 and was hired as the assistant defensive line coach by the New Orleans Saints in 2006 before being promoted to secondary coach. He was the secondary coach on the New Orleans team that won the Super Bowl against the Indianapolis Colts.

504 … Agree…. Reggie’s just shaking the bushes to see what flys out…
I think he’s doing exactly that… Seeing which candidate has the best team ( coachs) in mind

    504,

One problem… Raider DBs always have their backs turned!

    ————————————————————————————————————————

Dennis Allen, Tood Bowles, or Darren Perry would change that. I mention Perry assuming if Moss becomes the HC.

  • DKnight007

There is a reason why Moringwheg has not got a 2nd chance at being a head coach.

Out of all the coaches from the “Holmgren Tree”, Morningwheg was weak link of the bunch. Obviously.

  • FormerlyGoodOle00

Still think Mck is looking for someone to preside over a few garbage seasons while he rebuilds.

  • SnB offense defense specialteams

The Raider offense could use a tune up too. The offense tended to get shutdown in the 2nd half and they couldn’t find the end zone too many times.

Once again…the physical teams tended to push them around.

New head coach, new OC, new DC…new staff..

    Clean house Reggie!

I needed something to wipe with after I dropped a steaming pile in Darren’s walking cast.

Gave him an incentive to take them shots!

  • SnB offense defense specialteams

While Chucky B and Al Davis catch a lot of flak for this defense….and rightfully so.

Let’s remember those raggedy overpaid check cashers that couldn’t find the internal strength to make a play on those 95+ yard drives near the end of the season.

Their inability to just play good gap defense…tackle..the fundamentals that any $10+ million player should be able to do.

To get outclassed by Sterling Moore? Routt should give money back just for that.

Get some new players on defense….and take the cap hit today to start fresh next year.

    Clean house Reggie!

    cool

  • Carl Weathers

We basically have 2 options with selecting a new HC:

    1) Hire a former HC that has a losing record (Capers, Morninhweg, Tice etc.)

    2) Hire a guy that has been succesful as a coordinator and give him his 1st shot as a HC (Moss, Allen, Bowles etc..)

    Which would you prefer?

I’m leaning toward #2. These guys have all been around the game most of their lives and most coaches want to ultimately become a HC. Very few players on our roster have been to the playoffs so making it there next year would likely mean an early exit. Let’s get a fresh face with potential and like the rest of the team, use next year as the on the job training, learning schemes and such as well as becoing a HC or coordinator as well if that is to be the case.

  • AmysInCharge

Im all for Morningweg. But this guy Dennis Allen seems good too. At least now if Dennis gets hired, the person introducing him wont announce him as Dave, the next head coach of the Raiders.

Some guy named Mike Vick has inflated Philly offensive numbers also.

  • ghostraiders

53.. this might be true.. but while he’s twiddling his thumbs trying to decide who to hire, all the best D coordinators are being hired elsewhere. .. he needs to move before we fall behind and be left with picking up trash.

Going through Dennis Allens Bio nothign stands out to me. What is so attractive about this guys coaching? Is it the way Denver’s “D” stood up this year? They played well but they were not lights out.

Don’t like the whole statement in his wikipedia bio, “bend but don’t break defense.” I hate defenses that give up big yards. Sounds to much like prevent D to me.
