CSN-Bay Area: No negotiations with Allen yet

Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie was scheduled to meet with Denver defensive coordinator Dennis Allen Tuesday night for a second interview for the club’s vacant head coaching job, but McKenzie told CSN-Bay Area reports of “negotiations’’ were premature.

ESPN reported Tuesday morning the Raiders had identified Allen as the lead candidate and were negotiating a contract.

“There’s no negotiations (right now),’’ McKenzie said.

Citing “multiple league sources,’’ the ESPN reported Tuesday that other candidates, including Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg and Bears offensive coordinator Mike Tice have been formed they are no longer under consideration.

Asked by CSN-Bay Area if Allen could lock up the job Tuesday night, McKenzie said. “He could. Depends. He’s got a lot of stuff he needs to answer. Nah, it’s not a lock, irregardless of other people’s reports.’’

McKenzie said the fates of other candidates would depend on Allen’s interview.

Tice, according to reports in the Chicago media, removed himself from consideration Monday night. Other candidates reported to have interviewed include Mornhinweg, Green Bay assistant head coach Winston Moss and Miami defensive coordinator Todd Bowles.

Allen, 39, would be the first Raiders head coach with a defensive background since John Madden was hired by Al Davis in1969 to succeed John Rauch. Before being hired by Denver, Allen was a defensive backs coach with the New Orleans Saints and also worked with the defensive line in both New Orleans and Atlanta.

McKenzie is in Mobile, Ala., scouting for the Senior Bowl and told CSN-Bay Area Monday he hoped to have a coach named by the end of the week. McKenzie said at the time of his hiring he wanted his “own guy’’ as head coach and dismissed Hue Jackson after one season.

Allen’s strong candidacy is somewhat of a surprise given that he and McKenzie have no known background. McKenzie reportedly interviewed Allen for the first time last week in Denver while the Broncos other candidate, offensive coordinator Mike McCoy, pulled out of the running to concentrate on the vacancy in Miami.

In terms of defensive philosophy, Allen told the Broncos Web site heading into the 2011 season “We’re going to be built off speed and athleticism. We want to be a very fast, violent, aggressive type of defense.’’

Defensive collapses against Buffalo, Denver and San Diego in the season finale helped keep the Raiders out of the playoffs.

Reggie Wayne would be freaking awesome!!

Would probably take him a minute to get used to lining up in a different spot sometimes.

With Peyton, they line up on one side of the field EVERY PLAY, and never go in motion.

  • alex7

lol Miami. Would make good TV though.

Gannon: “Listen, if the strong drops in the box and you read outside fire, but they overload on the weak side, you can’t slide the line, audible the RB to SS side. K?”

Pryor: “Rich, check out this here TAT I gots last night!”

Well, what an uninspired pick Dennis Allen will be. Theres nothing really impressive about his resume and its not long at all.

Lets hope the coordinators are on point.
    ==================================================

I don’t know, he was a starter on RC Slocums “Wrecking Crew” defense that was #1 in the nation, then went to Dan Reeves in Atlanta and had one losing season there. He learned the league from Wade Phillips possibly one of the top defensive coordinators ever, before being recruited by rival New Orleans. There he was with Sean Payton, Gary Gibbs and Gregg Williams. Then he goes to another defensive guru John Fox to be HIS defensive coordinator and gets pretty good results there with not alot of talent. Am I missing anything? Oh, right, he won a World Championship Ring while in New Orleans. It might not be very long, but it sure is impressive. At least to me it is.

    ^^^^^^^
Like we are saying…IF this kid gets the gig, lets hope he hires GOOD EXPERIENCED COORDINATORS AND ASSISTANTS.

Those decisions will be a big key and may make or break him as a head coach here.

56% is below average in OSU’s conservative offense. I don’t care about his rushing stats, we all acknowledge that skill.

    We’re talking about passing.

47% in 6 games vs top defenses. That suuuuucks.

Been reading this blog every day for a few years now and just want to give props to everyone in here for being such a die hard Raida Fan. In regards to Allen, the key words I see in describing him are disciplined and hard-nosed. That’s what we need on this team cuz I’m tired of the freakin’ penalties and lack of focus, especially on D. If he can do to our D what he did with Denver’s, then we win the AFC West next year for sure. But in the long run, I’m looking forward to seeing what Reggie can do to improve personnel. Instead of mortgaging the future by reaching for aging veterans, these Raiders will be built through the draft. Value is the key word gentlemen…

BS. Look up his college stats. He blows away Jasoup in every category at every year in college. He threw for 57 TD’s, rushed for 11 TDs and caught 2 TDS. 69 effin TDS in 2 yrs and you guys act like the guy can’t play. Give me an effin break.

Tebow > Pryor > Pat White (but only by a little bit)

We’re not an Arena Football team.

    Aim higher.
    ______________________________________
Haaaaaa, ahhh man, thats cold. Pat White. Truth is, Pryor shouldnt have gone to Ohio state. Tressel failed miserably in developing Pryor, ran a boring offense, and didnt allow Pryor to maximize his skills and abilities. And so hes still very raw, but like I said, if hes willing to put in the work and learn, and gets adequate coaching, while watching Palmer operate, it COULD go really nicely. Or not. Theres definitely no guarantee he’ll be successful, but its still a nice prospect.
