McKenzie has ‘handshake agreement’ with Allen

Spoke with several people at the Raiders since word broke that they had agreed to hire Dennis Allen as the replacement for fired head coach Hue Jackson. Every person interviewed said this is general manager Reggie McKenzie’s show, and they are waiting for word from him just like everyone else.

Allen and McKenzie reached agreement last night in Mobile, Ala., where they were to watch players practice in advance of the Senior Bowl. McKenzie was scheduled to return to Alameda today. No word on whether Allen stuck around for another day or two.

As of now, a news conference introducing Allen as the Raiders 18th coach — Art Shell served two stints — has not been scheduled. McKenzie told Comcast Bay Area via text message that he and Allen have a “handshake agreement” for Allen to be the Raiders new head coach.

It’s likely that Allen will sign the contract real soon and a news conference will take place before week’s end.

    Oh and Welcome Allen

Clock’s ticking. Eager to see who he hires on his staff. Still hoping for the Dolphins D coordinator to come over along with retaining Saunders on O.

Here’s a blast from the past. Appalachian State hires Alvis Whitted as its WR coach. Only his hands kept him from being a Pro Bowler.

    Bruce Allen did well.
    Dave Allen, most excellent comedian.
Dennis Allen, the way to pluck a division and NFL championship from the ashes.

Would love someone to explain this thinking once and for all:

Some posters keep talking about how “Hue was in COMPLETE control after week 4.”

Do these posters acknowledge that you can’t go find new DC’s mid-season, can’t change your entire D philosophy and teach it correctly mid-season, can’t go draft higher-IQ football players instead of just athletes mid-season, can’t bring in many quality free agents mid-season.

Or do these things not matter, and it’s expected that one can turn a defense around MIDWAY through a season, instead of through an off-season?

  • M Lonetree

    Alex = Vomito ergo sum.

  • John Tweedy

Allen has been contacted by The Washington RedForskins, they are offering the DC/ AHC job and 3.75 Mil a year.

No word twisting, 666. Just FACTS.

Several media reports, in fact, just about every report pertaining to the Raiders’ HC situation, point to Winston Moss being “his guy”.

Media reports are not always fact, but don’t allow that to alter your screetching hatred, MR

I think the most disappointing thing about Hue was his inability to adjust to what the other team was doing. I know it’s not all his fault, Al Davis was the head of football operations and when he departed there was no structure in place to help him. But if he was truly HC material he would have found a way to win one more game.

Hearing lbs coach dean pees very likely to get ravens defensive coordinator job

    ^^^^^^^^
Not surprising and that makes sense for the Ravens.

That sucks, I was hoping Pees would be considered as the DC here with Raiders.

Slim chance though, since Allen has never worked with him before.

to be fair, the Raiders rarely announce anything before the rest of the press does, even when it’s official.

Raiders PR department is a mess.

Can’t wait until Reggie cleans that dept up and fires John Herrera.

  • dbaz09

Reminds me of when Sean Payton was supposedly offered the job by Al, then told everyone and his brother about it, only to turn down the HC job… Let’s see if this drags out.

  • ghostraiders

3.. I hope we could get Bowles as well as our D coordinator but according to Mike McCoy. . The reason he did not land the Miami hc job is because he( McCoy’) was not willing to keep Bowles on his coaching staff… if this is true, I’m glad we didn’t get his dumb asss. . Bowles is a good defensive coach. Apparently philbin has no problem with Bowles. He got the job.

do you expect the same out of a rookie HC as a veteran HC? Do you think John Harbaugh’s non-time-out gaff makes him unqualified? And that’s a vet.

  • ArtilleryShell

Hue was a great coach for us and deserved a season with his own defensive coaches. McKenzie could have concentrated on the free agent market, rebuilding the infrastructure (personnel department), including scouting, and a cap guy, restructuring contracts

  • Twocents

No Alex, I don’t think that.

  • alex7

you’d feel the same about Lovie Smith’s inability to win one or two more games and make the playoffs?

  • alex7

or can you tell a broken season when you see one? :)

Good post Artillery. We were so close.

Shell.. I think hue had to go. After having that meltdown after the SD loss and firing coaches left n right.. mark davis had to say to himself. .” Who the hell do you think you are hue?”.. Reggie and hue would have started butting heads immediately. . I would like al Saunders to stay though..

  • ArtilleryShell

Y is Allen better than Hue? Def played very well for Broncos, but stats weren’t so great. However, they kept it close for Tebow from mid season on. However, I didn’t see a dominant def just one playing well except for patriots game

  • alex7

lol “Who the hell do you think you are, Hue?”

Umm, the head coach, who should have the ability to pick a different DC after we just blew a playoff season due to our 30th-ranked D.

    Is that odd?

  • wickedjedi

Hue should have been fired simply for not having a better back up than Boller

  • ArtilleryShell

Saunders I hope stays too, Ghost. Hue shoulda disciplined McClain, I did lose some respect for him for that. I hope we don’t go back to a zone blocking scheme on offense, or adopt a totally passive bend but don’t break def

  • djohnnyg

I’ll try to relate this word for word.

“On Tuesday, NFLN’s Michael Lombardi broke a report saying the Oakland Raiders had had agreed to make Denver Bronco’s DC Dennis Allen their next head coach. Dennis Allen then told the Broncos he had accepted the head coaching positon of the Raiders. But hold on…there has been no official confirmation from the Raiders, and as you know, nothing escapes the Black Hole. Stay tuned…”

-Andrew Siciliano on NFLN about an hour ago.

  • alex7

    fixed it for you Wickedjedi.

“Al Davis should have been fired simply for not having a better back up than Boller.”

  • ArtilleryShell

    # 23
Funny bad as Boller played, he should have gotten all the reps that week maybe a bad decision on Hues part to split reps with Palmer. Mind you, Boller sucks, but not 100% on him

  • alex7

it says something that NONE of the THREE QBs Al Davis put on our roster (JC, Boller, Pryor) have a future with our team.

  • ghostraiders

Alex.. I assume you know hue started firing coaches without the owners approval. . The reason Reggie and Allen have a handshake agreement is because mark davis needs to sign off on him… hue was not the Guy having to pay the remainder of those fired coaches salaries. . Its mark davis the Guy who had to pony up that money.. mmm. . You figure hue should have let mark davis know..don’t you think??

  • YoungAmerican

Raiders also met with these players at the Senior Bowl today:

    Quinton Coples
    Melvin Ingram
    Dwight Jones
    DeQuan Menzie
    Alfred Morris

  • Twocents

All the pundits love to talk about how disfunctional the Raiders are, the joke of the NFL. Things have changed, it will take these idiots awhile to catch up.

  • alex7

    Ghost

you mean Hue “wanted to” fire coaches. Obviously he couldn’t actually do it without the appropriate signatures and such.

And for wanting that, I don’t blame him one bit.

Hue had more passion for fixing the Raiders than Mark did.

  • alex7

Would ANYONE have blamed Mark if he’d simply said “Yep Hue, you’re right, all those guys on the D side need to go. Time to get some better coaches on that side.”

Again, if Mark had done that, we’d simply have praised him on here.

  • Twocents

I think Hue has more passion for Hue than he has for football.

  • ghostraiders

Alex.. you are correct in saying that hue has more passion than m davis.. but apparently hue thought he had Almighty power to do what he wanted. . The Guy was drunk with power after davis passed away. . He and Reggie would have locked horns immediately. . He had to go IMO. . But like I said I wish we could keep Saunders. .his contact runs thru next season..as far as Hue. . Why hasn’t he been able to land any job in the NFL yet?? Mmm? ? The Guy might have some character issues. .

  • alex7

    Ghost,

FWIW, rumors have Hue possibly replacing Cam as Baltimore’s OC.

Regardless of character issues, the guy was providing results, would have given us a legit DC, and likely won the AFC west a few times going forward.

You pass this up because he has character issues? Why?

  • alex7

I would assume that MOST successful HCs think highly of themselves, very much so, and have ticked off or rubbed others the wrong way, especially when the “others” are leading a 30th ranked D in what should have been a special playoff season for Mr. Davis.

  • alex7

Like saying Harbaugh in SF has a big head, or character issues.

But he made the playoffs because the D kicked butt.

Anyone think they want him gone for his bull-headedness or sore demeanor after losses?

Menzie and those others are considered 3rd round picks. We’ll have a supplemental 3rd round pick.
    Don’t think it means much.

    Alex

Its no point in arguing with these guys. They don’t care that our off. went from 30th to tenth under Hue and our running game from 27th to 2nd. These guys actually give Saunders the credit, even though a season before Saunders arrived Hue had the same success on offense. He got to choose no one on his defensive staff and Hue actually reached out to Asomugha when he was a free agent before signing with the eagles

  • Twocents

I don’t know Alex, there are some people that strive to be successful by accomplishing something and then there are others that just try to BS their way to notoriety.

read the post above yours (41) and realize that Hue was our most successful coach since Gruden.

  • alex7

you don’t do running game from 27th to 2nd

    because of Jason Campbell. :)

You kinda know your x’s and o’s.

You don’t score points off fake FGs even when the league knows your propensity for it, by BSing your way.

You kinda know your x’s and o’s.

You aren’t the FIRST HEAD COACH to give Jason Campbell a winning season because you bs through things.

Excited about the new era of Raider football. But i need to see the off coord, def coord and a draft and then the picture will become more clear

  • JB

Listen to what John Madden has to say regarding Dennis Allen. More importantly, Madden inadvertently tells us why Hue wasn’t successful here as the HC. The truth speaks loudly. I hope Dennis Allen seeks some advice every now & then from Madden. He’s still got it.
