Allen introduced as new head coach

By Steve Corkran
Monday, January 30th, 2012 at 1:54 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders introduced head coach Dennis Allen on Monday, with Allen wasting no time in telling people that the talent is in place for the Raiders to win a Super Bowl right away.
Allen, 39, was hired by new general manager Reggie McKenzie last week as the replacement for the fired Hue Jackson.
“I’m going to do everything I can to prove you right and to make you proud,” Allen said right after being introduced by owner Mark Davis.
McKenzie said upon his introductory news conference that he fired Jackson because he wanted to “bring in my guy.” It became apparent early on in the search that Allen was that guy.
“I targeted coach Allen … from the start, “ McKenzie said from the podium he shared with Allen in Alameda.
McKenzie said he became impressed with Allen’s work for the way he switched from the defensive line to the secondary with the New Orleans Saints and transformed the defensive backs in a short period of time.
Last season, Allen was with the Denver Broncos as their defensive coordinator. Under Allen, the Broncos went from the league’s worst defense in 2010 to a much-improved unit.
Denver’s average rank in the four major catetories — points, yards, rushing and passing — was 30th. Under Allen, the Broncos’ composite ranking was 21st.
“What he did in Denver and turned that defense around, it made me take notice,” McKenzie said.
Allen’s pedigree is that of a defensive coach. He played defense at Texas A&M and coached defense in some capacity the past 10 seasons with the Atlanta Falcons, Saints and Broncos.
Allen said he is in the process of putting together his staff. Offensive coordinator Al Saunders is under consideration, he said, as are the remaining coaches from Jackson’s staff.
None of the coaches from Jackson’s staff was present at the news conference, whereas numerous ones were there the day McKenzie was introduced to the media.
McKenzie and Allen have spoken with quarterback Carson Palmer, with McKenzie meeting with Palmer face to face.
Both said they are excited about the prospect of Palmer being the starting quarterback next season.
“He’s excited, and we’re excited for him,” McKenzie said.
Jackson traded for Palmer in the middle of last season after a season-ending injury to starter Jason Campbell.
The Raiders gave up a first- and second-round draft pick to the Cincinnati Bengals to acquire Palmer.
McKenzie said every player will be evaluated in the coming days, including the 20 players eligible to become free agents. That list includes Campbell.
Allen said he will be involved in every aspect of the team. However, he intends to let his coordinators handle the play-calling duties.
Numerous times, Allen talked about fielding a team that will be “smart, tough and disciplined.”
Offensively, the Raiders are going to be “up tempo, run the ball (well) and be explosive in the passing game.”
He spent five years with a Saints team that lit up the scoreboard at a ridiculous pace and amassed yards seemingly at will. Allen stopped short of saying his offense will be modeled after the Saints, but Oakland’s offense will be “fast and aggressive.”
Defensively, “We’re going to be an aggressive, attacking style of defense,” Allen said.
Allen ran the 4-3 scheme more times than not with the Broncos. He envisions the Raiders defense being “multiple,” meaning he will endorse a variety of looks depending upon the players on the roster and the situation.
“I don’t think radical changes are what need to be made,” Allen said of a defense that faltered in numerous games last season. “There’s a talented defense (here), and we got enough players, both on offense and defense, that we can win a championship with.”
Second-year cornerback Chimdi Chekwa was the only active player in attendance at the news conference. He said he is impressed by Allen, though they haven’t met yet.
“I’m very fired up,” Chekwa said. “He seems very passionate. I’m just hoping that the passion leads to some victories.”
Chekwa said he, too, was impressed by what he saw from the Broncos defense last season.
“I’m excited about the new staff and opportunity,” Chekwa said. “Also, he’s a defensive guy, so that gets me even more excited. I saw what he did in Denver with their defense, so this is going to be fun.”

    I wanted to give you a little more realistic view of T. Pryor. Believe me when I compare him to K.Stewart I’m being kind. I will go so far as to say I don’t think he is in Oakland’s plans at all now that Al is no longer with us. Don’t want to be a downer, Just don’t want you to be let down when Pryor doesn’t do anything special when it comes to the QB position. He has hope as an offensive threat, Just not as a starting QB in the NFL

    I don’t “hate” Pryor, Just don’t see him as NFL starting QB. Wouldn’t mind seeing him run the option around the goal line or something.

    OC could very easily be Eric Studesville … but I like Joe Lombardi or Aaron Kromer better

    Kromer is a no nonsense guy. I think he’d mesh well with Allen, but I’m not aware if he has any X’s & O’s skills

    Kromer has been coaching offense since 1990 – mainly OLine, RB & TE

    to my knowledge, never been a play caller

    Joe Lombardi was OC at Mercyhurst College in 2001, LOL

    been coaching some offense, some defense – since 1996

    Don’t know, Rockstar. Only repeating what I’ve heard and read about the guy. Payton has a heavy hand in that offense. Not sure how much of a role his o-line coach plays in the actual planning and implementation of that offense on game day. I think I read about Charmichael that he didn’t start calling plays until Payton hurt his leg and was confined to the booth. While Charmichael remained the primary playcaller after Payton came back, word was that Sean still made the calls at critical times.

    Reminds me of something I read about the New England coaches, and why they tend to fail on their own. The prevailing thought is that Belichik relies relies more on his coaches for information than actual participation in gameplanning. They don’t make many decisions over there, and maybe aren’t as ready to do that on their own as they could be if they were more involved in that way.

    For all the great things Al did, one he was lacking was holding players accountable. You let players do whatever they want, including getting drunk before games, and say it’s ok, as long as you win, pretty much backfired on Al, unfortunately.

    Agreed! But those days with Stabler being still drunk and playing were fun to watch! LOL

    True. Unfortunately for Snake, he didn’t realize that as time went on, and his skills diminished, coming in with a hangover not only shortened his career, but is likely one of the reasons the Hall keeps passing him over.

    1) Head Coach, D. Allen got a 4 year guaranteed contract (sets the stage for future hires as well as current stability & now the players know who is in charge and it is no longer them);

    2) HC will be the head coach and allow the coordinators & assistants do their job;

    3) Dennis as well as Reggie realizes it takes more than just talent to win football games;

    4) Chekwa is ready to step up and take over someones’ starting job in the Raiders’ secondary.

    Lefty is spot on here. I think we do ok covering kicks, but we are terrible returning them. Ford was a factor early on last year (2010), but we haven’t had a consistent (or adequate) return game with punts or kickoffs since early 2010.

    until we have a top tier return man; Raiders’ special teams need to focus on blocking punts; which I think we should be doing anyway;

    1) better opportunity for a TD and great field position;

    2) less chance of a turnover;

    3) more pressure on the kicking team creates it’s own running lanes for the return;

    4) more shanked/ short & quick punts means better field position;

    5) I think the Raiders historically have had more blocked punts for TDs than returned punts for TDs (that doesn’t even count all the safeties we’ve acquired).

    Hi Steve … great work on these chats. If McFadden be dealt for a high draft pick(s), any sense what direction Reggie McK would take — cornerback?

    Steve Corkran:
    Depends upon where those picks would be. If we’re talking about the highest pick, has to be offensive line or cornerback.

    ======

    Cornerback. Granted we’re thin but if trainers were happy with DVD and Chek please Oakland wouldn’t be using the top pick for McFadden on a Cornerback for depth.

    During his pc, Allen mentioned the secondary as an area of concern. Is this bad news to Routt, Huff, Branch?

    Steve Corkran:
    Routt and Huff aren’t going anywhere. Under contract, with a ton of guaranteed money. Branch is a free agent, but he will be targeted for re-signing. Thinking more along the lines of the other cornerbacks.

    =======

    Other Cornerbacks.

    Again later:

    Comment From Heisenberg
    Do you believe we’re going to get a top flight corner in here? Someone like Finnegan or Grimes?

    Steve Corkran:
    Yes, indeed. That has to be near the top of the list. Can’t go with the cornerbacks who were on the roster in 2011.

    Chekwa and DVD may be good ones. But, I wouldn’t want to go into the season with them as starters. Ideally, Routt would be a #2 CB with an upgrade in free agency.

  88. The Big Banana Says:

    It’s the start of the 2012 season. Palmer’s had a full offseason/camp with DMoore, DHB, and Ford. McFadden is ready to rumble. And the Defense is healthy and – FINALLY – hungry.

    Get your glasses out cause poppa’s makin’ a stiff batch of koolaid! I’m already looking forward to next year.

  89. Just Fire Baby Says:

  90. JLofty Says:

    Steve’s best unanswered question…
    What are the chances of a quick improvement by our secondary? New staff, new scheme, a new player or two? The 9Balls seemed to improve greatly in ‘11 with only new staff and Dashon as a FA….

  91. JLofty Says:

    “We will be in the market to find more quarterbacks,” Elway, the Broncos’ executive vice president of football operations, told the newspaper. “That’s our approach with Tim being our starter as we go to training camp, that we’ll look at free agency and the draft.”
    ============================================

    Looks like Elway has his eyes on Alex Smith to take over the Dungver Q position.

  115. RAIDERMAN99 Says:

    No surprise that Palmer is ‘absolutely’ the QB.

    TP almost certainly gets another year as an understudy while his future viability as a QB is evaluated.

    In the meantime, Raids must bring in a 3rd arm. Could be a rookie, but it would make much more sense to have a vet ready to step in immediately if need be.

    When Campbell realizes he’s unlikely to be a starter anywhere else, it’s possible he might return.

    Wrong. Are you kidding me? At the NFL the head coach has to teach the captains how to call the coin flip? Ridiculous. Of course the HC tells the captains how he wants to begin the game. It happens all the time. You will see the captains look over to the sidelines especially in overtime games to see how the HC wants to set his teams up. Our captains looked over to the sidelines and Jackson must have been standing there admiring his nails. So one captain called one thing, the other called the other and they ran off the field.

    1. Disagree. Reggie is ineloquent granted but hes not a stupid man. That you think he might me makes me question your inteligence.

    2. Now I know you;re not smart. Everyone but you seems to know why Coaches offer non commital answers. Thats why pressers for the most part suck as do interviews.
    Its called strategy in not revealing your hand.
    Besides, most people realize Reg has been busy finding a Coach and the one he hired hasn;t had anytime to evaluate what hes working with DUH!!!

    3. Mark wrecking the team to spank Daddy? Maybe but more likely its that Mark freely admits hes not a football genius and he was always going to hire whoever came recommended highest by trusted friends when the time came. The time came.

    4. Jackson was fired because the new GM wanted his guy. Period.

    5. Still a good ole boys club?! U just said Mark was destroying Daddies legacy. Which is IT?!

    What do you see in Pryor? I’d love to be a believer but what I saw is a guy who really doesn’t make many good throws.

    He’s got moves in the pocket, and out of it. He’s big, he’s fast too, but I did watch a few of his games and wasn’t impressed at all with his passing.

    Agreed. If he’d retired in (say) 1990, either Ron Wolf or Ken Herock probably would have taken over. Both of those men later left Oakland, went to other organizations and built teams that went to the Super Bowl (and won, in Wolf’s case).

    My favorite part was when Reggie said, “I’m not going to reiterate what he said.”

    Then he went on to do exactly that.

    The other one was “logistics” Reggie seemed to stumble on that one a little.

    But hey, Bill Romanowski sounds like he took one too many shots to the head too.

    John Madden sounds like an idiot when he talks, but he is considered a very intelligent football guy.

    I like Reggie. He will do fine. Even if he provides a little comedy during press conferences.

  290. Hardline Says:

    I have spent much time watching Pryor’s 2009 season highlight reels. I know they show the best of the best of his performances, and may incur bias. Besides Pryor’s scrambling ability, what really impressed me was his arm. He made at least 30 completed passes where the ball was in the air for 50 yds or more. And these passes were beautiful to behold: high arching over the shoulder, high looping in front of the receiver, etc. all timed perfectly.

    I was watching the 49′ers in the playoffs and noticed one thing about Alex Smith: he always threw a little ahead or a little behind his receiver, (even with no pressure) making the receiver strain to catch the ball, thus the receivers were unable to fully exploit after-catch yardage.

    The throws I saw Pryor make were all thrown and timed perfectly slipping into the outstretched hands of the receiver. These were all 70 plus yds pass plays since the receivers, because of the perfect pass thrown, were able to exploit after-catch yds.

    Frankly, I am unable to understand why most people are down on Pryor saying he can’t throw, when I have seen it with my own eyes. I wouldn’t trust Corky; he bends the truth to save his job, and also has bad judgment: i.e. the Chargers were broken in spirit and would lay down for the Raiders in the last game.

    I am high on Pryor; in all good faith I would like to know why most posters claim he can’t throw.

    I am high on Pryor; in all good faith I would like to know why most posters claim he can’t throw.

    I am NOT a Pryor “expert” and I do wanna believe he can be the man, but i have watched a few of his games in their entirety.

    One game was the one against Wisconsin his last yr. up at Camp Randall.

    I watched cuz I was rooting against Wis., and what I saw were wobbly ducks being tossed up frequently, and very few passes on target.

    Granted, Wis. was a tuff team with a very good defense, but so are NFL teams.

    Even in THAT game he did do some good things out of the pocket and ran for a few first downs; he did well in that capacity which is one reason I think he could contribute to the Raiders somehow, but what do you do?, platoon him in with Palmer for the occasional wildcat?

    I’d love for him to prove me wrong.

  301. RaiderWeaponX Says:

    292. Not that Pryor can’t make those throws, he can’t make them consistently and I think its his ability to read Ds, pocket presence and other aspects that make the inexperienced prospect a project and a rather big one.

    By Bill Williamson
    The nice play is over in the AFC West. It didn’t last long.

    When Dennis Allen was hired to be the Oakland Raiders’ head coach last week, his former boss John Fox wished Allen well. And, now, Allen is on his own.

    ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the Broncos have denied the Raiders permission to speak to linebackers coach Richard Smith for the Oakland defensive job.

    Previously, Kansas City defensive backs coach Emmitt Thomas and New Orleans defensive line coach Bill Johnson were dropped off as candidates. It’s not a surprise Fox denied Allen permission. He wants to keep as much stability on his defensive coaching staff as possible. It seems more and more teams are denying permission these days and it’s no shock this intra-division hard stance was made.

    Potential coordinator candidates may now include former San Diego defensive coordinator Greg Manusky and San Francisco defensive backs coach Ed Donatell.

    Meanwhile, NFL.com is reporting that Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin is considering pursuing former Kansas City coach Todd Haley as offensive coordinator.

    That would be an interesting pairing. Haley is known for being high strung and vocal in his coaching. Tomlin is intense, but he’s not much of a screamer and a yeller. Also, Haley is known for getting on his players often during games. It would be interesting to see an established quarterback such as Ben Roethlisberger adjust to playing for Haley.

    I’m sure Haley would love the job. He is from Pittsburgh and his father, Dick, is a former legendary Steelers’ personnel man.
