Fassel gone, Knapp invited back
By Steve Corkran
Monday, January 30th, 2012 at 11:04 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Dennis Allen today acknowledged that Al Saunders is under contract with the Raiders. From there, he talked more about what he wanted from an offensive coordinator and not what Saunders might offer.
Perhaps that had to do with the fact that Allen had offered the job to Houston Texans quarterbacks coach Greg Knapp, who held that title here in 2007 and ‘08 under Lane Kiffin and Tom Cable.
Fox Sports’ Alex Marvez said late Monday night that Knapp has been offered the job. No word yet on whether Knapp said yes or if he intends to accept the post held by Saunders last season.
“The type of offensive coordinator I’m looking for is, really, at the end of the day, the same things I talked about offensively and what we want to do,” Allen said. “We want to be a up-tempo offense that can run the ball and be explosive in the passing game. So those are the things that we’re looking for, for guys that can get that accomplished.”
Knapp played a hand in developing rookie quarterback T.J. Yates this season, once starter Matt Schaub and backup Matt Leinart suffered season-ending injuries.
Knapp, 48, was with the Raiders in 2007, when their offense ranked 23rd in points per game and 25th in yards per game. He was stripped of his play-calling duties late in the 2008 season, when interim coach Tom Cable felt the need to take over.
Knapp bolted for the Seattle Seahawks in 2009 and spent the past two seasons with the Texans. Allen and Knapp worked together in Atlanta in 2004-05.
In other news, Paul Gutierrez of CSNBayArea.com reported that special teams coach John Fassel has signed with the St. Louis Rams. Fassel spent the past three seasons with the Raiders.
Previously, defensive line coach Mike Waufle and wide receivers coach Sanjay Lal signed with the Rams and New York Jets. respectively.

Knapp? We couldn’t the ball when he was here ..right?

Move*…(wish, slow down your typing too fast)
January 30th, 2012 at 11:11 pm
I wonder how the Al Davis faction of the Raider Nation are going to handle us running a defensive oriented system in the foreseeable future. Our offense will be designed to run high percentage plays, take less risks, give the D rest. No more gambling, and making off season moves for speedy receivers and has-been QBs.
January 30th, 2012 at 11:11 pm
I Suck.
January 30th, 2012 at 11:12 pm
Oh crap! Knapp! This is getting worse and worse.
We SUCKED on offense with him as offensive coordinator!
WTF are we doing here? Why can’t we keep a good offense and build the defense. It’s like 1 step forward…1 step back…maybe 2 steps back.
January 30th, 2012 at 11:15 pm
Best case scenario we’re like Tampa a decade ago. Worst case scenario is we’re kind of like da Bears…meaning we’re good, but just boring and not good enough to win it all.
January 30th, 2012 at 11:17 pm
Maverick, we were an offensive team when Knapp was here the first time. We’re a defensive team now. Different system. Knapp will be expected to keep the ball on the field, score about 17 points per game. Last time he was here, he was expected to score 90 points a game. Under Al’s offense…
January 30th, 2012 at 11:17 pm
keep the ball on offense, I meant. Goodnight. Why can’t this blog have an edit function?
January 30th, 2012 at 11:21 pm
Knapp hasn’t been successful as OC since 2003. He had a few good years in San Fran.
Other than that. SUCK
January 30th, 2012 at 11:22 pm
Knapp? Really? Good grief. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
January 30th, 2012 at 11:29 pm
Fire Mark bring back Al.
January 30th, 2012 at 11:29 pm
Jerry seems to think Knapp will run system more like Green Bay rather than the dink, dunks, and roll outs he made famous (more like infamous) here the first time.
January 30th, 2012 at 11:30 pm
Ok, so I was just able to watch a little of the presser, and did anybody else notice that Allen has the “crazy eye” thing going on? He was so wide eyed that it looked like he was going to jump out and start yelling “AGGRESSIVE! AGGRESSIVE! AGGRESSIVE!” at the reporters or something…

Knapp! Fuuuuuuuuuuu@@@@kkkkkkk!!!!!
January 30th, 2012 at 11:41 pm
For those shortsighted people out there, let’s not forget JaMungus Russell was our QB under Knapp. I don’t think GOD himself would have produced an offense. Knapp wouldn’t have been my #1 choice, but seriously, the talent in ‘07 and ‘08 SUCKED!!!

30. Greg Knapp / Seahawks
Injuries have to be taken into consideration given a hard-hit offensive line, but evaluators were not quick to give Knapp a pass for the offense’s shortcomings.
SCOUT’S TAKE: “Knapp runs a ball-control offense to the hilt. You don’t see creativity to go downfield or open it up as far as big plays go. I think a lot of that is tied into the quarterback (Matt Hasselbeck), but historically that has always been his game. It probably hurt that offense this year because they did not have the personnel to have sustained drives. They needed to get the ball downfield more — and it forced the quarterback into a lot of bad situations.” … “They could not run at all. The quarterback quit on them. (Knapp) did a terrible job, and it is the reason why Mora was fired and should have been fired.”

I say let coach Allen find HIS guys. It really is about accountability, from Mark Davis, to Reggie McKenzie, down to every head coach, and all 53 players. The entire organization needs to preach and believe in winning Super Bowls, forget about rebuilding. Dennis Allen and HIS staff might not make it happen next year, but the Raiders have to make playoffs. It will be interesting to see if Reggie commits to HIS guy, or lets him go if the Raiders miss the playoffs next year. My gut says he’ll commit. And that’s a change I hope fans can understand is the best way to do business.
January 30th, 2012 at 11:51 pm
Just watched the press conference and I must say that I am excited. DAllen and Big Mac handled that press conference masterfully. Big Mac seemed a lot more comfortable than in his first press conference and had some real good answers; especially the last question on if he’d pick the players and Allen would handle all the coaching, where he responded by saying it will be a team effort.
As for Dennis Allen, the man talked like a general. Like a guy that was already in charge. A guy that knows exactly how he wants to run things. Says what he means and means what he says. None of the questions seemed to phase him.
And look at Big Mac in all black. Playah status!
January 30th, 2012 at 11:55 pm
Great point, #18. Heck, we could have had Sean Payton and our offense would have sucked with JaDumass at the helm. Talk about being handcuffed as a coach. The coaches couldn’t wait to get rid of his azz.

As for Fassel leaving, don’t let the door hit you on the azz.

Yes, but unfortunately Knapp went on to stink just as bad in Seattle. Sucked so bad he caused the whole coaching staff to get fired.

Head Coach FINALLY gets to choose his own staff and the 1st thing he does is f’k it up.
January 31st, 2012 at 12:19 am
You already mentioned he had good years in SF. He also improved Atlanta’s O when he took that job. Improved Seattle too. Not by much, but it was an improvement from the previous year.
January 31st, 2012 at 12:21 am
2008 Raiders under Greg Knapp
Offensive Ranking – #32
Quarterback – JaMeatloaf Russell
Running Back – Justin Fargas (DMAC was injured most of that year)
Recieving Leader – Zach Miller 778 yards 1 TD.
Top Wide Receiver – JLH 366 yards 4 TD.
Tom Cable, Head Coach.
This is who he had to work with. He didn’t have much better prospects in Seattle either.
Not saying he is my first choice. I would much rather keep Al Saunders.
January 31st, 2012 at 12:24 am
Not that I’m excited about the hire. I’m just not going to be doom and gloom about it either. He’s improved most the offense most everywhere he’s been. And based on what I’ve seen from so far, I’m trusting our new coach’s judgement. He certainly knows more football than you and I combined.
If it doesn’t work out, then he deserves to be judged on it.
January 31st, 2012 at 12:25 am
He had a brainless dummy posing as an NFL QB and a human wrecking ball at RB. Pretty bleak, friends.
January 31st, 2012 at 12:27 am
I don’t see what the big deal is with Mark Davis’s hair. Frankly I think it’s childish to sit there and insult people based on their physical appearance. From this angle, his hair looks quite normal.

Knapp? Really? I thought this was a new era? Knapp is old news. And he wasn’t all that good to begin with.
January 31st, 2012 at 12:28 am
And you have to credit Knapp with how the backup QB played after the Texans lost their star starter. Not too shabby.
January 31st, 2012 at 12:31 am
It will be wait and see for Knapp, but it is a good thing Fassel is gone.
January 31st, 2012 at 12:40 am
That would be horrible if the defense turns around and we basically have the Chuck B of offense.
I can’t rely on any stats that involve Jawalrus, so he gets the benefit of the doubt until I see things fall apart. But all I ask of any coordinators of ours is to please do what Hue did and realize that DMac is our offense and it must go through him, even if that only lasts through week 10.
January 31st, 2012 at 12:41 am
Yates was hardly prolific, an fostor an tate leadingnthe charge, but yeah he did ok, so credit knapp i guess….
Im not feeling good about the mcfadden rumours, please keep him i know the blahblah rara injury thing, he aint 25 yet,
January 31st, 2012 at 12:45 am
Blackmamba – We can’t expect Knapp to get a prolific performance from Yates. My point was just that he backup was well prepared to lead the team into the playoffs. They didn’t have the dropoff you’d expect from losing their starting QB. The wheels friggin fell off here in Oakland when we had to play our backup.
January 31st, 2012 at 12:52 am
Yea your right, in preparing him he did well, poor choice of words on my part, the wheels always fall of for the nation, seems so long since soup was dinking us up field, an darren ooh an ahhring us in the endzone…

Maybe Saunders Playbook and influence and Knapps Ball security will combine to form the Greatest Offense Ever, or maybe not just 3yards and a pile of dust and an occasional screen to Reece.

January 31st, 2012 at 1:26 am
#37, we never really gave our back up a chance;
Mr. Boller held his own finished off the victory against Cleveland;
Hue had Carson split reps with the 1st team offense, cutting Bollers reps in half, even ran some plays with Pryor, who had been suspended up to then;
Boller leads the team to a first and goal; Hue runs 3 straight times; on 4th and goal Hue calls a wild cat with Bush taking the snap,
Boller was never given a real shot.

Good morning Raider Nation, ah what few post I put on here. I was one of the let the gm and coach make there mark.Pick there guys but ah Im not feeling good at all with greg knapp. Dude there has to be some young new offensive coordinator greg knapp. The raider fans need good decisions and this is a big one already .
January 31st, 2012 at 2:09 am
The only reason I can think that Knapp is going to be OC is because Allen wants to trade DMAC for picks, Knapp will run West Coast Offense with Zone Blocking scheme where its not supposed to matter who the running back is
January 31st, 2012 at 2:33 am
MakeItRain , I hear ya. Somethings I was worried we might lose tha is raider football and the west coast offense has never been my thing. Power running and taking shots the raider way. Ah some of this change might be tough. Can you imagine the o linemen another change back to zone blocking and teh funny thing is we let some guys go last year just to find more power running linemen
January 31st, 2012 at 3:09 am
I pray that Knapp rejects the job offer. Dennis Allen can do so much better at OC (and DC). But this goes back to what I said last week. We took too long hiring Allen, that by the time he was official, most of the good position coaches and co-ordinators had all taken up jobs with other teams, and now teams like the raiders and buccaneers have to scramble to grab someone – as opposed to hiring someone they specifically wanted – just like reggie targeting and getting Allen.
January 31st, 2012 at 3:53 am
Rise n shine (yawning),,, DA considering Gregg (take a) Knapp as OC scares me a little but it could be worse I guess (Phil McCoy). But if that means going back zbs, that also means we may have to completely redo the O-line again and be forced to keep CC, (rrrh). If it happens I just hope the offense will mentally be on board having to learn another playbook,,,again. But then again who else is out there for OC? Now if DA brings back Chuck Bresnahan then we’ll be in major trouble, and my heart can’t take another year of that sh?t.
January 31st, 2012 at 4:31 am
I really hoped we would had kept Saunders, I would like to see what he could do on offense without Hue effing up the playcallng..
Fassels gone is not good either!
January 31st, 2012 at 4:38 am
The ZBS is where it’s at!!!!
McKenzie comes from the Packers, who are a ZBS team, and there offense seems to be fine.
I tried to tell you guys all year, that the notion that we went back to some “power” blocking offense last year was a joke.
We were still doing a lot of ZBS stuff.
January 31st, 2012 at 4:51 am
Whoever our OC is, I knew it wouldn’t be Saunders, I am confident they will score more points than Hue’s offense last year, without the turnovers, and of course the penalties.
January 31st, 2012 at 4:57 am
JFB,,,I hope you’re right,,now the question is do we want another year with CC, and is Gregg Knapp really the answer for us? I’m lil nervous about that.
January 31st, 2012 at 4:58 am
Cooper Carlisle hasn’t missed a snap in two years.
I hope they give him an extension!!
January 31st, 2012 at 5:04 am
Khalif Barnes was supposed to be some type of “power” blocker, and he was God Awful.
Meanwhile, undersized athletic O-lineman like Veldheer and Carlisle were our best offensive lineman.
Wiz 2.0 is a guy who may be better served in the ZBS as well, as he is not a huge drive-blocker, at least that was the reports on him coming out of college.
January 31st, 2012 at 5:08 am
The Texans, with a 3rd string hack of a QB, went into Baltimore with Knapp and the ZBS, and pushed them around the field and ran for more yards than anybody has ever run on the Ravens in the playoffs, and in any game in years.
January 31st, 2012 at 5:10 am
Good morning Nation!! I’ve been begging for some kind of indication on coordinator prospects, cant say I’m thrilled with what I learned this morning about Knapp…
One poster did make a great comment about the level of talent (or lack thereof) that Knapp dealt with in his first stint with Oakland. In short, Japorka$$ Russell..
This is a much improved O-line, RB and WR corps to work with… Just wished Saunders was kept around for continuity…
Anyone think there is a chance Al S. sticks around as some sort of assistant/consultant to Knapp??

Notice #29 on this list. In 2009, JaMarcus’ supporting cast (OL, RBs, WRs, and offensive coaching staff) was the worst in the history of the NFL! And it’s not even close.
January 31st, 2012 at 5:23 am
I’ve always said that we never should have let Knapp go to Seattle in the first place. By the end of 2008, the offense was humming and he had JaMarcus playing very well. Even during the bad games, he and JR were joined at the hip after every offensive series. I think he did a hell of a job here. Trading he and John DeFillipo out for Buddy Whackit and Ted Tollner was a mistake that cost JR and Cable their jobs.
January 31st, 2012 at 5:40 am
29. Tom Cable / Raiders (head coach)
JaMarcus Russell will handcuff any offense, and the inability to extract any consistent production from the QB position limited the offense, but evaluators questioned what Cable was able to do even without Russell in the lineup.
SCOUT’S TAKE: “(Cable) has not been able to develop any pattern of consistency outside of knowing they are going to run the ball all the time. The reality is that their passing game has been very inept, to the point of futility, and it is not just the lack of productivity at the quarterback position. It is one of those offenses where if they are not playing well on defense, you know they are not going to generate enough points to beat you.”

Only Cable found work immediately, and Jamarcus hasn’t.
But I like Knapp, and think he will get D Moore 75+ catches next season.
And Palmer will be a top 10 QB.
The ZBS may prefer the more atheltic O-lineman, but these teams (like the Texans) want a brute of a FB, like we had with Oren O’neil during our full-on ZBS years.
Not sure what a switch to a fully embraced ZBS means for Reece as the FB.

Exactly. Nobody could have looked good running Kiffin’s offense with JaPaycheck taking the snaps and handing off to Fargas. If you look at Knapp’s career as OC, he does well when he has offensive weapons. He’ll have those here.

Only problem is that JR looked damn good running it the last six games of 2008. We went 3-3 with a blowout at Denver and two consecutive wins to end the season over a hot Houston team and at Tampa, with the Bucs needing the win to make the playoffs. He essentially retired Guden and Garcia with that victory. JR had a 92 QB rating during that stretch, better than Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco. Letting Knapp and DeFillipo out the door after that season was a huge mistake.

Yes, he did look good for stretches in 2008…then he just quit trying. 2009 was a disaster, and the kicker was when they had their final meeting with him after the season, they asked him to lose 10-15 pounds before minicamp. Quit trying? What a joke! 2009 was a disaster because Tom Cable had no clue what he was doing on offense. JR was in his second year and playing with rookies at WR. And one of those rookies was DHB! Tom Cable’s incompetence hurt the offense a Hell of a lot more than a few extra pounds put on in the OFFSEASON!
January 31st, 2012 at 6:45 am
His offense wasn’t very conservative in Houston. It WAS here, but they had to limit the playbook to about 30 plays for Russell. I think it will be a LOT different with the weaponry we have now.
***
BCZ,
Gary Kubiak & Rick Dennison get all the credit for Houston’s offense. Knapp was QB Coach. He gets credit for developing and working with Schaub, Leinart & Yates. Not taking anything away from him, I think he’s a good coach – but he wasn’t the OC

This is one of the greatest myths going on the blog today. Did you actually watch any of the games Scabs or Frye played that season? You, like so many other sheep Raider fans, have been blinded by one miracle quarter against a Steeler team that had lost three straight games, including being dominated by Cleveland (this isn’t a joke) just the week before. Scabs replaced JR at halftime against the Jets. How did that work out? How did we look against Dallas on Tanksgiving or against the Bengals? How did Frye look against Cleveland, a game JR should have started after his heroics in the victory at Denver the week before? I know it’s hard to come to grips with, but JR wasn’t to blame for all the offensive woes. As is the case with just about every team, it started at the top.

Ok, so Knapp it is! Haven’t we learned from bringing coaches back? Well, I will run with it because he is back with the Raiders, but…who will be our DC?
January 31st, 2012 at 7:03 am
Not a fan of this hire at all, primarly for the reason Carl Weathers says at #146. Knapp is not the first name I think of when I think of an attacking offense.
It’ll mean more high percentage throws for Palmer, which should cut down on the INTs but at the same time, Palmer’s big arm & ability to fit balls into tight windows will go to waste.
That said, I’m willing to give him a chance because now he’ll have a real QB to work with instead of the unholy trinity of McCown/Culpepper/Russell and being caught in the middle of the Kiffin/Davis/Cable circus.
January 31st, 2012 at 7:05 am
Allen wants smart, ball control and uptempo on offense 2/3 can be had with knapp. Allen will fill that 1/3 for uptempo. We can say all we want but when we start winning consistantly all will be good and everyone will be happy.. Go Raiders

January 31st, 2012 at 7:07 am
Wait, didn’t we beat Cinci that year, and Frye was the one who got us close, and JaMarcus just found Murphy in the end zone on 4th down…after almost fumbling the ball away on third down…
Point is, the team has moved on without him and has gotten better…now what would have impressed me if he was with Hue and improved! I guess we won’t know…
January 31st, 2012 at 7:07 am
Allen might boost Knapp’s offense by insisting on a more attacking style, but it’s looking to me that the gameplan is going to be a conservative offense that can generally score just enough points to win and an aggressive all-out attack defense that can generate turnovers and give the offense good field position.
January 31st, 2012 at 7:08 am

Wait, didn’t we beat Cinci that year, and Frye was the one who got us close, and JaMarcus just found Murphy in the end zone on 4th down…after almost fumbling the ball away on third down…
Point is, the team has moved on without him and has gotten better…now what would have impressed me if he was with Hue and improved! I guess we won’t know
@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
You guess we won’t know???? Of course he would have improved. Just like Joe Flaco, Darren McFadden and DHB all improved under Jackson! One of these days, all the sheep will understand just how dismal our coaching situation was between Kiffin and Hue.

The Texans run Kubiak’s offense, they have for the last few years, and Knapp had nothing to do with that offense other than coaching QBs.

Strange hire. Knapp ran the ZBS here in Oakland under Cable and Kiffin. He also ran it in Atlanta…that possibly means Carlisile and Satele will be back as they are athletic enough to pull in that system….one really good idea would be to get a deal to get the Texans Ben Tate if Bush leaves via Free agency.

This is the youngest coach in the league, so it’ll be interesting to see how much control he will really exert. Did he really bring up Sean Payton as a mentor in the PC? What the heck was up with Knapp.? He was at Atlanta, and..Vick didnt really light it up until he left and got under Andy Reid and Morningweg.

I hear you RR but you know what? Before all of the injuries our offense was looking pretty good. Even after the injuries we were still putting enough points on the board to win the game. Our run game was on fire. I don’t recall our run game looking that good under Knapp. If I recall it was as lethargic as our passing attack. Previously he was the quarterbacks coach for the Houston Texans, and before that the offensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks. He was named to the position in January 2009 by new head coach Jim L. Mora. Knapp, whose forte is the West coast offense, was offensive coordinator of the Atlanta Falcons from 2003-2006 under former coach Jim L. Mora. Prior to joining the Falcons, Knapp spent nine years in various positions with the San Francisco 49ers, which include Offensive Coordinator from 2001–2003, Quarterbacks Coach from 1998–2000 and Offensive Quality Control from 1995-1997.”

Definitely like this Dennis Allen guy, hopefully he knows what he’s doing.
The Texans offensive system has been in place for years, I doubt Greg Knapp had much to with their success except for getting Yates to play decent ball, not an easy task by the way.
But it’s hard to understand how Allen kept mentioning the Saints offense and offered the job to Knapp, not a lot of similarities there.
If we are adjusting our blocking scheme back to primarily ZBS, we do have the athletic players to pull it off, Veldheer, Wiz, Satele and Carslile can all move.

Only problem with that is, how do you motivate overpaid players, who haven’t turned the corner and have struggled with the same problems dating back to 2009. Mac has to hit some home runs with some undrafted players and every draft pick to bench some of these higher priced guys.
thats what infuriated me about the Sterling thing, the Pats have 18 undrafted players – they reward on merit – Ocho Cinco is on the bench in that system, they have hobbits like Woodhead, Edelman and Welker BALLING.

The problem with Knapp is not just his body of work. The problem is that with a new Offensive Coordinator is that he has to learn the strengths and weakness of his personnel. If we are lucky it will take a half a season. Offering Knapp the job is an indication that Coach Allen is in rebuilding mode, not reloading mode. It’s going to take at least 2-3 years to build an 8-8 team.

P. Rick Hue did way to many trick plays at times but you know what after dealing with the lame offense we had for the last 5 plus years. I enjoyed some of the trick plays. WRs with speed love reverses and a number of them did work. And we did a fake field goal and we did score! The GB call was a bad call but the way our D was being blew out it really did not matter. The funny thing is on all of the fakes the players were in position to make plays they just did not do it. The fake field goal near the ned of the season the back was wide open, defense was tricked and the ball was over thrown. But yeah, Hue could have done less trick plays but I don’t think it would have saved his job.
Hue is a good O Coordinator, we will see him again on another team.

10th in the NFL @ Rushing in 2008..
Al Saunders doesn’t get any credit for our offense the past 2 years. Hue Jackson was the play caller. He punched his own ticket outta town, so no use crying over spilled milk. Saunders was basically the QB Coach last year. Keeping him doesn’t do anything for “continuity” except the fact that he knows the players. Knapp will know just as much about their skills when he rolls the film from last season

See, this is one of the things they really didnt consider…this puts more pressure on the running game, which means they need to franchise Bush , or see if Reece offers a little more, because taiwan is more of a change of pace back.
That type of offense is predicated upon a back that can catch passes and create. It might not be so bad, in that a conservative offense would keep CP3’s interception total down, but we have to control the clock with defense and get turnovers – and Allen is going to do it with THIS BUNCH?

As long as it is not Hue Jackson as Head Coach you could careless. : ) I hated the Kiffin error with a passion, Cable’s lat season with Hue as the offensive coordinator was not terrible, the games were “watchable”.
We have saw the ZB system on this team for years and it has not worked. WHat makes the o-line we have now tcandidates for the zone blocking system?
We have some strong rookies who were starting to look good on the o-line blowing some holes open. Now we are back to relarning a position.
