Fassel gone, Knapp invited back

Dennis Allen today acknowledged that Al Saunders is under contract with the Raiders. From there, he talked more about what he wanted from an offensive coordinator and not what Saunders might offer.
Perhaps that had to do with the fact that Allen had offered the job to Houston Texans quarterbacks coach Greg Knapp, who held that title here in 2007 and ’08 under Lane Kiffin and Tom Cable.
Fox Sports’ Alex Marvez said late Monday night that Knapp has been offered the job. No word yet on whether Knapp said yes or if he intends to accept the post held by Saunders last season.
“The type of offensive coordinator I’m looking for is, really, at the end of the day, the same things I talked about offensively and what we want to do,” Allen said. “We want to be a up-tempo offense that can run the ball and be explosive in the passing game. So those are the things that we’re looking for, for guys that can get that accomplished.”
Knapp played a hand in developing rookie quarterback T.J. Yates this season, once starter Matt Schaub and backup Matt Leinart suffered season-ending injuries.
Knapp, 48, was with the Raiders in 2007, when their offense ranked 23rd in points per game and 25th in yards per game. He was stripped of his play-calling duties late in the 2008 season, when interim coach Tom Cable felt the need to take over.
Knapp bolted for the Seattle Seahawks in 2009 and spent the past two seasons with the Texans. Allen and Knapp worked together in Atlanta in 2004-05.
In other news, Paul Gutierrez of CSNBayArea.com reported that special teams coach John Fassel has signed with the St. Louis Rams. Fassel spent the past three seasons with the Raiders.
Previously, defensive line coach Mike Waufle and wide receivers coach Sanjay Lal signed with the Rams and New York Jets. respectively.

LOL, Yes you did! Good Morning Dirt Lot!

  • CJ Legend 34

Maybe Knapp can talk management into giving Russell another try out and Knapp can bring him along as a back up with Pryor?

I mean Russell can’t be blamed for all the loses. He did not have alot of talent on that team.

LOL!!!! Knapp again? Really???? Knapp? I would be shocked if Knapp came back after hsi stay here with the Raiders, but who knows.

Why judge Knapp based on two seasons with Jamarcus Russell as his QB?

    ==============================================

Exactly. Nobody could have looked good running Kiffin’s offense with JaPaycheck taking the snaps and handing off to Fargas. If you look at Knapp’s career as OC, he does well when he has offensive weapons. He’ll have those here.

If he isn’t on a team when training camp opens this year, he never will be. Even you won’t be able to deny that after 3 years he is NEVER coming back.

    @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

It’s all up to JR. If he wants back in, it’s a done deal. There are a lot of smart guys in the league who know the guy was in a no-win situation here, just like every other player that has played for the Raiders the last decade. Combine that fact with his legendary arm talent and you’ve got yourself a second chance.

We gotta have at least ONE coach old enough to remember Jim Otto…

Knapp also had McClown and Culpepper before HAVING to go with JaMarcus! But, that is not saying much! That’s why I asked…what was his offense rankings with Garcia and TO?

Only problem is that JR looked damn good running it the last six games of 2008. We went 3-3 with a blowout at Denver and two consecutive wins to end the season over a hot Houston team and at Tampa, with the Bucs needing the win to make the playoffs. He essentially retired Guden and Garcia with that victory. JR had a 92 QB rating during that stretch, better than Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco. Letting Knapp and DeFillipo out the door after that season was a huge mistake.

Yes, he did look good for stretches in 2008…then he just quit trying. 2009 was a disaster, and the kicker was when they had their final meeting with him after the season, they asked him to lose 10-15 pounds before minicamp. He showed up at minicamp…having GAINED 20 pounds. That’s when Cable, Tollner and Hackett went to Al and said “Dude’s not even TRYING.”

That means the focus is solely on revamping the O.co Coliseum complex with retail, restaurants, hotels and new sports facilities for the Raiders and Warriors.

    @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

Quit trying? What a joke! 2009 was a disaster because Tom Cable had no clue what he was doing on offense. JR was in his second year and playing with rookies at WR. And one of those rookies was DHB! Tom Cable’s incompetence hurt the offense a Hell of a lot more than a few extra pounds put on in the OFFSEASON!

  • RaiderRockstar

His offense wasn’t very conservative in Houston. It WAS here, but they had to limit the playbook to about 30 plays for Russell. I think it will be a LOT different with the weaponry we have now.

    ***

    BCZ,

Gary Kubiak & Rick Dennison get all the credit for Houston’s offense. Knapp was QB Coach. He gets credit for developing and working with Schaub, Leinart & Yates. Not taking anything away from him, I think he’s a good coach – but he wasn’t the OC

  • hwnrdr

Unless Houston was willing to give him up…I don’t think Allen could have offered him QB Coach!

Yup. I remember Campbell’s first camp, when Zach Miller was quoted as saying it was so nice to have a starting QB who actually knew the playbook and formations FOR A CHANGE.

  • Macho Man Randy Savage

Hmm. I remember how I felt last year when Al hired Bresh. I hated it. I hated it because of what I remembered of Chuky B’s defenses…

I dont feel the same way on Knapp. He was OC on a very unstable team with very poor coaches and undeveloped players. today we have a solid core of vets on O, perhaps they are ready to execute Knapp’s brand of O.

Also, didn’t Al even say that he had no choice but to cut him because he wasn’t trying? And Al never cuts his first rounders, let alone #1 after 3 years!

This statement alone from Coach Allen gets me pumped up! Reminds me of the teams we had back in the day, attacking on both sides of the ball.

Too many times this past season it took the team to long to line up. I would be yelling for more hurry up offense to keep the D on their heels.

This is one of the greatest myths going on the blog today. Did you actually watch any of the games Scabs or Frye played that season? You, like so many other sheep Raider fans, have been blinded by one miracle quarter against a Steeler team that had lost three straight games, including being dominated by Cleveland (this isn’t a joke) just the week before. Scabs replaced JR at halftime against the Jets. How did that work out? How did we look against Dallas on Tanksgiving or against the Bengals? How did Frye look against Cleveland, a game JR should have started after his heroics in the victory at Denver the week before? I know it’s hard to come to grips with, but JR wasn’t to blame for all the offensive woes. As is the case with just about every team, it started at the top.

  • Macho Man Randy Savage

Saunders will continue his prior job scouting for retirement homes…..oooooooo yeaaaaaaaaaah!

  • Carl Weathers

Greg Knapp?? I thought Allen said he wanted an aggresive up tempo offense? Knapp = opposite

  • Macho Man Randy Savage

Wow. Someone is actually taking Jamarcus side, even though Jamarcus never took a side, he just sat there getting fatter and dumber by the minute, looking confused at the clock, hoping the game would end soon.

  • hwnrdr

Ok, so Knapp it is! Haven’t we learned from bringing coaches back? Well, I will run with it because he is back with the Raiders, but…who will be our DC?

  • SilverNBlackPA

Not a fan of this hire at all, primarly for the reason Carl Weathers says at #146. Knapp is not the first name I think of when I think of an attacking offense.

It’ll mean more high percentage throws for Palmer, which should cut down on the INTs but at the same time, Palmer’s big arm & ability to fit balls into tight windows will go to waste.

That said, I’m willing to give him a chance because now he’ll have a real QB to work with instead of the unholy trinity of McCown/Culpepper/Russell and being caught in the middle of the Kiffin/Davis/Cable circus.

  • Calirock83

Allen wants smart, ball control and uptempo on offense 2/3 can be had with knapp. Allen will fill that 1/3 for uptempo. We can say all we want but when we start winning consistantly all will be good and everyone will be happy.. Go Raiders
