Fassel gone, Knapp invited back

Dennis Allen today acknowledged that Al Saunders is under contract with the Raiders. From there, he talked more about what he wanted from an offensive coordinator and not what Saunders might offer.
Perhaps that had to do with the fact that Allen had offered the job to Houston Texans quarterbacks coach Greg Knapp, who held that title here in 2007 and ’08 under Lane Kiffin and Tom Cable.
Fox Sports’ Alex Marvez said late Monday night that Knapp has been offered the job. No word yet on whether Knapp said yes or if he intends to accept the post held by Saunders last season.
“The type of offensive coordinator I’m looking for is, really, at the end of the day, the same things I talked about offensively and what we want to do,” Allen said. “We want to be a up-tempo offense that can run the ball and be explosive in the passing game. So those are the things that we’re looking for, for guys that can get that accomplished.”
Knapp played a hand in developing rookie quarterback T.J. Yates this season, once starter Matt Schaub and backup Matt Leinart suffered season-ending injuries.
Knapp, 48, was with the Raiders in 2007, when their offense ranked 23rd in points per game and 25th in yards per game. He was stripped of his play-calling duties late in the 2008 season, when interim coach Tom Cable felt the need to take over.
Knapp bolted for the Seattle Seahawks in 2009 and spent the past two seasons with the Texans. Allen and Knapp worked together in Atlanta in 2004-05.
In other news, Paul Gutierrez of CSNBayArea.com reported that special teams coach John Fassel has signed with the St. Louis Rams. Fassel spent the past three seasons with the Raiders.
Previously, defensive line coach Mike Waufle and wide receivers coach Sanjay Lal signed with the Rams and New York Jets. respectively.

Wait, didn’t we beat Cinci that year, and Frye was the one who got us close, and JaMarcus just found Murphy in the end zone on 4th down…after almost fumbling the ball away on third down…
Point is, the team has moved on without him and has gotten better…now what would have impressed me if he was with Hue and improved! I guess we won’t know…

  • SilverNBlackPA

Allen might boost Knapp’s offense by insisting on a more attacking style, but it’s looking to me that the gameplan is going to be a conservative offense that can generally score just enough points to win and an aggressive all-out attack defense that can generate turnovers and give the offense good field position.

  • bcz24

Knapps offense last time was limited by personnel. Lets see what he does with our current offense which compared to the last group of guys he worked is like comparing Nuclear tipped Tomahawks to a slingshot…

Not a fan of this hire at all, primarly for the reason Carl Weathers says at #146. Knapp is not the first name I think of when I think of an attacking offense.

As relying on winning the field postion battle with Lechler at the helm booming those kicks. Glad Fassel is gone bring in a coach that will keep these guys in their lanes to many big returns allowed this year. Our return game was sorry as well, I know JFord was hurt but damn couldn’t produce anything on kick returns

that would be Ed Donatell of the Niners. He’s was the defensive backs coach, and he could include 3-4 hybrid/4-3 schemes for the defense. Bill Johnson (DT coach for Saints could be another)

another name for OC if Knapp declines would be Jeremy Bates.

  • Macho Man Randy Savage

Agree. Glad Fassel is gone. Special teams shined because of skill of our kickers, not coaching of the unit.

Whomever is brought in as OC it looks as if Al Saunders wil be kept to run out his final year in his contract and be a consultant and/or QB coach.

Ford broke off a few KOR with that special teams group Fassel coached – 2 wins were instrumental – KC in OT in 2010, and the Cleveland game in 2011

Strange hire. Knapp ran the ZBS here in Oakland under Cable and Kiffin. He also ran it in Atlanta…that possibly means Carlisile and Satele will be back as they are athletic enough to pull in that system….one really good idea would be to get a deal to get the Texans Ben Tate if Bush leaves via Free agency.

This is the youngest coach in the league, so it’ll be interesting to see how much control he will really exert. Did he really bring up Sean Payton as a mentor in the PC? What the heck was up with Knapp.? He was at Atlanta, and..Vick didnt really light it up until he left and got under Andy Reid and Morningweg.

I see 7 wins MAX this year. If you all think this is an upgrade from Saunders or even Hue Jackson, good luck.

This team will be a rebuilding joke once again!

    Why Knapp?????

    To develop Pryor?

    I just don’t get it.

back to zone blocking with DMAC and Bush? Well at least they know how to read zone blocks. I think I am going to be sick.

    CJL,

99% of Raider Nation wanted an experiened OC & DC since we have a Rookie GM & Rookie HC

Knapp has experience and a solid resume. I’ll take a 48 year old guy from the playoff Texans squad that Allen trusts and has worked with before over a 64 year old guy who was a holdover from Jackson’s staff!

Saunders hasn’t been a successful OC since his KC days

I think once the Raiders announce they are moving to LA in a new stadium they are going to get all types of coaches wanting to jump aboard.
    ===========
For the millionth time. The commish said..he wanted the Niners and Raiders to share a stadium (the same way the Jets and Giants do) – the visiting teams would split the revenues among BOTH AFC and NFC teams in the same season , thus making more for the clubs. L.A., as usual, has too many chefs in the kitchen, which is why they failed before with Roski and Katzenberg having those two competing bids, and the Texans ended up getting approved.

Until GROUND is broken, the thing is paid for, nobody is going anywhere. It could be the Los Angeles Rams AND the L.A. Chargers before its the L.A. Raiders.

I hear you RR but you know what? Before all of the injuries our offense was looking pretty good. Even after the injuries we were still putting enough points on the board to win the game. Our run game was on fire. I don’t recall our run game looking that good under Knapp. If I recall it was as lethargic as our passing attack. Lets be honest we did not get a strong run game until Hue Jackson arrived on the scene people, like it or not.

Our stinking defense was holding us back 90% of the games. Last year, and the bone headed penalties.

I know Allen worked with Knapp and trusted Knapp but we have seen this show pony once at the fair alredy. I hope I am wrong but right now I am not excited one bit.

The bidding war is for the JaMarcus Russell motivational speaker curcuit sponsorship.

I beleive the highest bid right now is up to 4 dollars and 2 bottles of purple drank.
