Todd Bowles taking Eagles DBs coach job. Turned down offer from Oakland.

    -Jason La Canfora

Oakland’s offer was DC or DB Coach?

    =========================================

If he turned us down for a DB Coach position in his hometown, I assuming we didn’t offer him DC.

Bowles chose Nnamdi Asomugha, Asante Samuel & Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie over Routt, CJ37 & DVD …

    anybody surprised?

what players stand a better chance of making him look good ???

In addition to the whole hometown thing, he’ll have considerably less “coaching” to do with that group.

True, but if he turned our group around, wouldn’t that make look a lot better? But, going home for the same position offered by a team across country is something that didn’t surprise me!

  7. The Realist Dirty Raccoon Says:

Me thinks Tommy Kelly is gone. I’ve been to Camp every year fir the last 5 years and his attitude is still the same. Just like Turdell Sands. Trade this lump for the best pick we can get, then use it on a NG or RDE.

Also, per NFL Network, Bowles is from the Philadelphia area. If you’re offered one DB position at home and another across the country, home might be more inviting.

    ********************************************************

Smart move on his part. He’s closer to home, and in the driver’s seat should Castillo fail to get them to play better on defense. You can bet that the Eagles’ front office is looking at it that way.

If he came here as a DB coach and was somehow elevated to DC he would be running Allen’s system instead of his own. I’m sure he’d rather have the flexibility that the Philly job provides.

  9. RaiderDuck Says:

Another possibility with Bowles: He interviewed for the HC job. DC is one thing, but DB Coach may have seemed like a slap in the face. Can’t blame him for feeling a bit snubbed.

At the same time, Reggie said that Allen would get to pick his assistants. Maybe he’s already tabbed Smith or Johnson for the DC job.

  10. edward teach Says:

I was thinking the same thing, RaiderDuck. The new DC may already be in Alameda.

  11. hwnrdr Says:

Do you think Allen talked to anyone still in Oakland? I know their contracts were up and removed from the site, just asking…

FYI, if Bowles interviewed for the Raiders HC postion, why would Allen hire him as DCO…

You can logically scratch that idea…

  13. Thec Says:

Bowles was off the table the minute he was not hired as HC….Logic…

    ==============================================

My guesses (and these are ONLY guesses):

He’s keeping Saunders, Wylie, Classic Wiz, John Fassel, and maybe Skipper and Henry.

If Bowles was offered DB Coach, then Woodson and Ross are gone.

Can’t imagine keeping any defensive coaches, for that matter. The D stinking up the joint was part of the reason we went for Allen in the first place.

Bottom line: Offensive staff stays more or less intact, Defensive staff is flushed clean.

  15. Thec Says:

WITF, would bowles come to oak as a DCO. DB CO, or otherwise after interviewing for the HC posiion????

I could see Bowles coming here for DC, especially if nobody else had offered him a coordinator job.

  18. Thec Says:

Why would Allen offer a job to someone he was comepting against for the HC position????

  19. Thec Says:

    +++++++++

Sorry Bruh, no way in hell allen would offer this job to the competition….

  20. Just Fire Baby Says:

I think there is about a 30% chance Saunders stays, about 50% Bones Fassell stays, and about a 1% anyone else stays.

Coaches ALWAYS bring in their own staff, from top to bottom.

  21. edward teach Says:

    Thec,

If he were only offered the DB position, I agree with you. However, I think he would have at least considered the DC position. Only so many of those to go around.

What I think it came down to was opportunity. He’s closer to home and has a real shot at the DC position (and running his own show on that side of the ball) if Castillo doesn’t work out (and he was on the hot seat last season).

Who knows what would have happened if the Philly job wasn’t open.

  22. Thec Says:

Who knows what would have happened if the Philly job wasn’t open.

what happened is the same thing I said on the 27th…

Allen is not going to hire bowles as DCO…

    ********************************************************

I would give Saunders better odds. He’s still under contract, and the O performed pretty well last year (despite poor game management and questionable playcalling by the head coach).

  24. Just Fire Baby Says:

I don’t think McKenzie and Allen care if a co-ordinator is under contract or not. At least I hope they don’t care about that.

I would rather they bring in their own guy, than make a decision based upon saving money.

Why would Allen offer a job to someone he was competing against for the HC position????

    ======================================

Why wouldn’t he? He’s got a four-year deal, so it’s not like Bowles would be a threat to his job unless things completely fell apart, in which case Bowles would be the least of his problems.

  26. Thec Says:

Allen has had pletny of time to reach out to any and everyone. I would imagine he has assembled most of his staff. We mmay see some no name or colleges guys. guys that Allen has worked with in the past.

I know HC;s typically will bring in all new staff however, if he runs saunders this will be a mistake IMO.

  27. Thec Says:

Bowles would be here for a year max. The D does well he is outta dodge.

  28. hwnrdr Says:

I guess we’ll have to wait til Noon too see what happens! BTW: Anyone went to fan fest yesterday to rip Lew Wolff a new one? LOL

  29. Thec Says:

Like I said last week, bowles would not be here, If allen had him earmarked, he would be our DCO…

    Threat or not…

  30. Just Fire Baby Says:

I don’t see anybody staying to be frank.

Maybe the ST guy, because that isn’t a “system” thing.

Saunders might have a slight chance, because he has a strong resume. The fact he was here last year and is under contract won’t have anything to do with it, IMO.

    =================================================

Saunders being under contract would not be a consideration. If Allen wanted his own guy, Reggie would just send Saunders home and eat his contract for the year. Happens all the time.

If Saunders is kept, it’s because the offense was not the problem, and they want to keep continuity going.

    ********************************************************

It’s not all about the money, JFB. I know that’s hard for you to believe sometimes, but in this case it isn’t. If the guy didn’t know what he was doing he would be gone regardless. They would keep him because he’s done a pretty good job and because it would enable some continuity on that side of the ball and allow for more concentration on the defense, which is what really needs fixing. The fact that he’s under contract is just convenient, is all, and it’s one less guy (at least) to have to go out and find and bring on board.

Combination of both. I do respect that fact (and agree with you) that some of our guys are overpaid and underperform.

I don’t think coaches’ salaries even count against the cap. It’s why big-name coaches get offered million$ with impunity. It’s “only money.”

    *******************
Its not at all uncommon for guys to be in for ‘HC’ interviews, when really the GM is just getting info for coordinator positions or the like. I dont think Bowles was thinking he would rather be a DB coach than a DC because we ’snubbed’ him for the vacancy.

  51. bcz24 Says:

    *******************
Coaches don’t count towards the cap, but you still have to generate the revenue to pay them. It is a well know fact that Oakland is LAST in the NFL in generating revenue, and widely speculated that the #1 reason Al was handing signing bonuses out like candy was because he could pay those bonuses in one lump sum when the revenue sharing checks came, to keep the salarys low during the season since he had so much trouble with the revenue of the team.

The media can roll their eyes until they go dry! Do you know how much jack we would save by cuting Seymour? Cut Huff, trade Branch, trade McClain, and cut Aaron Curry. For starters and keep going from their. We won’t win more than 8 games if that this year any how.
    *************************
Branch is a FA… can’t trade him, besides, he is one of the few guys worth hanging on to!

Why cut Curry? He is cheap AND he played pretty well. One of the very few guys I would want to keep on defense.

It may be Bowles didn’t want whatever Raiders were offering cuz of being snubbed for a HC job with Raiders.

Maybe Reggie made him feel like HE was the guy and feels jilted.

Then when we offered same deal basically as Philly, he thought ’screw you’.

    Hwnrdr,

Completely Agree. the Raiders Defense has given up 60 TD’s the past two years

    29 with Nnamdi
    31 without him

odds are CJ37 & Lito will be swept out the door and we’ll rely on youngsters like DVD, Chekwa & Lambert to compete with a rookie or two and provide better results under a legit DC. Assuming he sticks, Stan Routt is gonna be the vet mentor of this group and he draws more flags the entire Eagles defense combined

    ———–

Really? $5 million per year is far more than most defensive starters make. And it’s way too much for a WLB who can’t cover or rush the passer. Since the Seahawks restructured his deal, the Raiders can save every cent of that $5 million by cutting Curry.

We’re not talking about an above-average player, or a guy who could start most places in the league. We’re talking about a guy who got beat out for a starting job by a 4th round draft pick last season.

The Raiders need to stop paying top dollar to average (and below average) players. Their focus needs to be on getting some draft picks back. And they certainly weren’t scouting Bobby Wagner, Lavonte David, and Sean Spencer for nothing.

    For reference:

Curry and Kelly are making $5 million
Wimbley and Routt are making $10 million
    Huff is making $8 million
    Seymour is making $15 million

And Branch still needs to be re-signed.

You can’t build up your team when sub-par players are making top dollar.

Okay, then Kelly, Seymour, CJ and Routt can go at least. I wouldn’t miss them.

I feel like our D was sooooo bad that almost ANYBODY in there would be an upgrade.

I hope Allen looks at that Detroit game and sees a weak (becuz they suck) 4 man rush on the goal line, and the middle of the field wide open for Detroit to do whatever the heck they want, and then sees the Megatron catch and says “THAT is gonna stop”.

    ——————

Routt is one of those players who it would cost a LOT to cut. Plus he’s by far the best CB on the team. Very solid #2 corner who unfortunately gets paid like an elite #1 corner.

Unless the Raiders can find a way out of his contract, and then in turn sign Brandon Carr and Tracy Porter (Porter is a likely FA target regardless, but it’s doubtful they’d have the money for Carr AND Routt) Routt is going to stick.

Routt should definitely be re-structured, though.

Kelly can be traded. CJ can likely be cut without much cost to the team.

Seymour is the big question mark. Is he worth keeping around for $15 million? Will he restructure? Would it be more worthwhile to the coaching staff to cut him and save $7.5 million to use on another player? No clear answer there.

We can re structure first before we start cutting

    ————–

With others, yes, but not with Curry. The Raiders wouldn’t owe Curry any money if they cut him. That’s why he’s a leading candidate for a money-saving move.

The Raiders would likely bring in a rookie, and possibly sign Wesley Woodyard from Denver for depth.

I didn’t realize the Curry deal was like that. Ok, then it makes sense to not pay him that $.

I thought Kelly was making more $ than that.

All I want, or should say expect, or better yet HOPE to have is if we have an opponent down deep in their own end with under 2 mins. left with the game on the line, that we can prevent them from scoring a TD to win the game.

I remember Raiders of the past would allow at least a FG attempt in those situations, but a TD? How many times did we see that happen this yr.? With the game on the line ONLY needing to hold them to a FG and we win and our “D” failed?

    -Buffalo
    -Detroit
-SD (would’ve at least had a chance to win if we held)

Other games we won but not without having to sweat it out cuz our ‘D’ gave up the obligatory late TD.

    -Minn.
    -Cleveland
    -Denver (at Mile High)
    -KC (at Arrowhead)

Hey I wouldn’t be mad if they kept Saunders, but to me it seems much more unlikely than likely.

Only question I have with Saunders staying is who calls the plays? Is Saunders a good play caller?

    ***

    JFB & Thec,

Al Saunders is 64 years old. He hasn’t been a play caller since 2007 with the Redskins (where he failed)

Al Davis has always been a fan of Saunders because he’s well versed in the old school Air Coryell offense that features the deep ball. Saunders has a 600 page playbook that confuses the heck outta people.

If he’s retained as OC and handed the “play caller” title I gotta assume it’s because we couldn’t find a better option. Has nothing to do with continuity. He was basically the QB Coach last year.

  117. RaiderRockstar Says:

From the Saints website: Bill Johnson bio

Entering his third year on the Saints coaching staff, Bill Johnson possesses a long history of developing the skills of top-notch defensive linemen throughout his coaching career. Entering his 31st year in the profession and 11th NFL season, the Louisiana native came to New Orleans after a two-year stint in Denver.

In 2010, the front four played an important role in a defense that improved from 25th in the NFL to fourth in yardage and from 20th to seventh in scoring defense. DT Sedrick Ellis enjoyed a breakout campaign, leading the club with a career-high six sacks, tied for third in the NFL among tackles. DE Will Smith had 70 tackles and finished second on the team with 5.5 sacks. DE Jeff Charleston finished with three takedowns, two forced fumbles and one recovery in an increased role in the defensive line rotation.

The line thrived under Johnson’s approach in 2009. Smith finished fifth in the NFL with a career-high 13 sacks. DL Anthony Hargrove recorded five sacks and three fumble recoveries to tie for the third-highest total in the NFL. The front four was the first line of defense in a unit that finished second in the NFL in red zone touchdown percentage (39.3).

During his two seasons with the Broncos, he coached a unit that in 2007 tied for second in the NFL with nine takeaways, combining for seven fumble recoveries and two interceptions. That season, DE Elvis Dumervil tied for sixth in the league with 12.5 sacks.

During his tenure as defensive line coach with Atlanta from 2001-06, Johnson oversaw a unit that helped the club post 242 sacks during his six years with the club. Over that span, Atlanta twice ranked in the top 10 in fewest yards allowed and fewest yards per carry (2004, 2006). The Falcons also had a pair of Pro Bowlers up front under Johnson’s direction, including DE Patrick Kerney and DT Rod Coleman.

Coleman was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2005, and his 28 sacks from 2004-06 were the most by a defensive tackle in the NFL over that span. Kerney was voted to the Pro Bowl in 2004, and the defensive end had 53 sacks under Johnson’s tutelage from 2001-06, notching at least 10 sacks in three seasons.

Atlanta reached the NFC Championship Game in 2004, with Johnson’s defensive line leading the NFL in sacks (48) for the first time in franchise history. The Falcons also ranked eighth in the NFL in run defense, Kerney had a career-high 13 sacks and Coleman led all defensive tackles with 11.5.

Johnson joined the Falcons in 2001 after a one-year stint at Arkansas working with the defensive line, his second time coaching at the school. That season closed a 21-season stretch as a college assistant.

The longest coaching tenure of his career was at Texas A&M, where Johnson served as defensive line coach for eight seasons (1992-99) under Coach R.C. Slocum. The Aggies earned three conference championships during those years, went to six bowl games and finished in the top 10 three times. Nine defensive linemen under his instruction were selected in the NFL Draft, including Sam Adams, a consensus All-American in 1993 and the eighth overall pick by the Seattle Seahawks in 1994.

Johnson came to Texas A&M after coaching the defensive lines at Arkansas (1990-91) and Louisiana Tech (1988-89). In 1987, he served as a graduate assistant at the University of Miami under Coach Jimmy Johnson, working primarily with the linebackers on a team that went 12-0 and was voted National Champions. Prior to joining the Hurricanes, Johnson spent two years as an assistant at McNeese State University coaching the school’s outside linebackers in 1986 and its defensive line the year before.

He entered the coaching profession as a graduate assistant at his alma mater, Northwestern State University in 1980 and served in that capacity for two seasons before coaching defensive ends/linebackers at the school from 1982-84.

Johnson was a four-year letter-winner and two-year starter in football at Northwestern State, after a standout prep career at Neville High School in Monroe, La.

Born June 23, 1955, he and his wife, Dawn, have two children: Billy, 20, and Abby, 19.

From the Donkeys website: Richard Smith bio

Richard Smith returns to the Broncos as linebackers coach in 2011, marking his fifth overall season with the club after previously working with the team’s linebackers and special teams from 1993-96.

Entering his 24th overall NFL season, Smith, 55, was hired to his current position on Jan. 25, 2011.

Smith comes to Denver after spending two seasons (2009-10) coaching under John Fox in Carolina. Prior to instructing the Panthers’ linebackers, Smith served as the defensive coordinator for three years (2006-08) with the Texans and during the 2005 season with the Dolphins. Before joining Miami, he coached with the Lions (2003-04), 49ers (1997- 2002), Broncos (1993-96) and Oilers (1988-92). He has coached nine different players to a total of 10 Pro Bowls during his career.

In his first season with Carolina in 2009, the Panthers’ defense ranked eighth in the NFL in total yards allowed (315.8) and ninth in points surrendered (19.3), despite a heavy injury toll on his unit. Under his coaching, middle linebacker Jon Beason earned Pro Bowl honors in 2009.

Smith was the defensive coordinator for Houston from 2006-08, where he helped produce two Pro Bowl performers. Linebacker DeMeco Ryans made the Pro Bowl in 2007 and defensive end Mario Williams made the squad in 2008.

In 2005, Smith served as the defensive coordinator with Miami, where his defense ranked second in the NFL in sacks with 49.

Before he was hired by the Dolphins, Smith spent two seasons as Detroit’s assistant head coach/linebackers. Under his direction, linebacker Boss Bailey earned all-rookie honors from ESPN.com in 2003.

During his six seasons with San Francisco (1997-2002), Smith oversaw four Pro Bowl linebackers: Ken Norton, Jr. (1997), Lee Woodall (1997), Winfred Tubbs (1998) and Julian Peterson (2002). During his last two seasons in San Francisco, he helped the team improve its run defense from ninth to seventh in the league, despite only having two linebackers on the team’s roster with more than one year of NFL experience.

From 1993-96, Smith coached the Broncos’ special teams, while also helping with the linebackers during his first two seasons.

Smith entered the NFL in 1988 with the Oilers, where he coached special teams and also assisted with the tight ends, linebackers and offensive line. His all-around support helped the team reach the playoffs in each of his five seasons with the team.

He spent nine seasons coaching at the college level before breaking into the NFL. He coached the linebackers/special teams at Arizona in 1987, after three years at California from 1984-86. His collegiate coaching career began with three seasons at Cal State-Fullerton from 1981-83.

Smith began his coaching career at Rio Hondo Junior College in Calif., where he oversaw the offensive line for two seasons (1979-80).

Smith was an offensive lineman at Rio Hondo Junior College from 1975-76, before transferring to Fresno State in 1977. He helped the Bulldogs to the Pacific Coast Athletic Association title in 1977 and graduated with a degree in physical education in 1979. Richard is married to Renee and has four children: Morgan, Aimee, Whitney and Travis. He was born on Oct. 17, 1955.

Then for every game the further pare that playbook down to about 40-50 plays that they are going to run that week depending on the situational charts of the game. Then at half time, they usually take out what hasn’t been successful and come up with the second half chart (the play chart the coach or oc holds over his face.

It is an amazing read if you want to learn more about football. Pat Kirwan has been a coach, a scout and a GM in the NFL. He is also a consultant for the CBS pre and post game crew, and does his show Moving the Chains on Sirius everyday 3pm-7pm.

And I didn’t say I wanted to keep Saunders, just that the rumors that his playbook is too big and therefore confusing are over rated, as teams don’t keep the whole playbook for the year, instead the create a new playbook for the season based on personal (or make revisions to the previous years if the coaching staff and personnel doesnt experience much turnover)

    Agreed.

Avril would be a great pickup, as well. A front four of Shaughnessy – 1-tech DT (rookie or vet) – Houston – Avril would be something to see, for sure.

the guys who will be replaced are the guys we can afford to lose. the guys that will save us the most coin who aren’t helping us all that much in the W/L column. We’ll have quite a few low key FA signings. We’ll also make the most out of the draft and undrafted rookies. I don’t expect to land a Mario Williams. Frankly, I don’t think he makes all the difference between winning & losing. I want run stuffers and DB’s who can defend the pass regardless of the scheme without a gazillion penalties. Me thinks Tommy Kelly is gone. I’ve been to Camp every year fir the last 5 years and his attitude is still the same. Just like Turdell Sands. Trade this lump for the best pick we can get, then use it on a NG or RDE.

    ^^^^^^^
    Trade Tommy Kelly for a 3rd or a 4th!

They can rotate Houston and Bryant more on the inside with Seymour Butts and draft Taamu in Round 3 or any other young potential stud NT/DT.

Disagree. If there were issues getting plays in to the QB on time we would have seen it with both guys. Palmer audibled all the time and we didn’t call a whole lot of pre-snap timeouts with him under center. With Campbell it happened a lot. Same coach, same coordinator.

I dont think that Mckenzie & Allen, are going to just stand by and allow Palmer to throw the amount of picks that he threw and still be our starter (no matter how much he cost), these 2-guys appear to be no nonsense, they will go a different route instead of settling for a QB who skills and decision making is on the decline. Hue forced himself to have to rely on Palmer, and probably would have continued the trend next season no matter how Palmer would perform…I dont get the sense of that here with this new staff coming in, they will play the players that will give them a better chance to win without making the mistakes that have cost us. If Palmer is QB-ing he will have to cut way down on his Int’s, because these new guys GM and Coach will not settle for it!
    *******************

You seem to be forgetting that thee are 3 parts to an INT. They include the QB, the WR and the defender. Any one of these three may be the reason for the INT although all the stats will post against the QB. There’s other considerations that also contribute to INT’s. They include the size of the open window at the point of reception, the timing aspect between the WR & QB, the crispness of the route and any undetected interference induced by the defender. So as we can see, an INT could be a very complex interaction of multiple parts and rationale.

I’m really tired of people jumping on CP’s ball sack about INT’s. He actually one of the most accurate passers in the NFL. He makes throws that he majority of QB’s, including JCampbell whom I like, wouldn’t even consider. This last year, the main problems were for the mostpart WR driven. That is to say the timing was bad, the WR wasn’t where they were supposed to be, they ran bad routes, they didn’t fight for the ball or they just plain droped or tipped the ball resulting in an INT. Were there some INT;s that were just bad throws? Yes the were a couple but those were when CP was injected into the game (KC game)with virtually no practice at re there some just great defensive plays? Yeah, there were a couple but why are those held against the QB? The defender just outplayed he WR and got to the point of reception first or took the ball away. Those should be on the WR and not the QB.

I think with a full camp under their belt, more practice time, more maturing of the WR’s, etc., we are going to see a much stronger passing game. Will there be INT’s? Yes, but that’s the price of greatness. If you don’t go for the great pass, it won’t happen. No guts, no glory. CP will prove, IMO , to be one of the all time great Raider QB’s in Raider history. And yes, HE will take us to the SB & win it within the next 3 years.

    Lefty,

I agree with you. I wanted it put to bed the minute Palmer arrived in Oakland. It was pretty clear at that time (or seemed to be, anyway) that Jason Campbell had played his last down as a Raider.

I just thought it was a bit unusual that McKenzie would have interrupted a reporter’s question to specifically say that efforts were going to be made to bring Campbell back. Maybe it’s just window dressing, but I thought it interesting that he would say something like that when the PC was moving forward. He could have just let it go, and he didn’t.
    —————————-
    Regarding Campbell,

I didn’t hear it the same way.

I might have missed the context.

I got that Campbell would be a consideration just like all other FA’s.

  537. edward teach Says:

Could be, Lefty. We all hear and interpret things differently.

It’ll be interesting to see the transcript.

  538. HairyBush Says:

how much is he worth in a scenario like that? Is it worth uprooting the family from Oakland if he has an offer on the table for reasonable #2 QB pay?
    —————-
It would be nice if he stayed, Always nice to have a solid backup.-Although I don’t see him sticking around.

I think the only way he stays is if he truly buried the hatchet with the way things went down after his injury last year. With a new regime it’s possible, Still not likely.

  539. lefty12 Says:

If Campbell knows he has no chance to start because an established QB already has the job,or has the chance to go to a team that has a rookie,I’d bet he went where the rookie was-or somewhere like Miami where he thinks he might get a chance to become the starter.

No way Campbell resigns with the Raiders knowing he has no chance of starting.
    ***********************

The magic word there being starting. He’s at an age now where it might count against him as a starter. Those teams needing a franchise QB most likely won’t want to invest time & effort for a guy that can’t be “their guy” for multiple years. I don’t see JC as ever becoming elite. He’ll be good but not elite. It’s going to be very tough competing against younger equal talent. Teams will go for the younger guy every time. Jason would fit in here at Oakland as the BU QB very well. I also believe the Reggie would pay him very well for what he has to offer. Actually, Oakland is more of a home to Jason than anywhere else. this is where he got along well, was a leader (Still is if he wants), has a history of success and is for the most part respected by the fan base. Can’t say he gets that combination of goodies anywhere else, past, present or future. He’d be well advised to take the Oakland BU QB role. He’d be paid very well, would have reasonable longevity, could still be part of the leadership, would be part of a winning organization, would get a SB ring and possibly play in that SB. He would be very well respected within the community. He could look back 10 years from now, be $30M+ richer, not all banged up and have a good second half of his life. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that picture. He’d be smart to think this proposition over before he jumps.

I will go so far as to say I don’t think he is in Oakland’s plans at all now that Al is no longer with us. Don’t want to be a downer, Just don’t want you to be let down when Pryor doesn’t do anything special when it comes to the QB position. He has hope as an offensive threat, Just not as a starting QB in the NFL.

  555. Raider-in-PA Says:

I think it would be huge to lure Campbell back. Assuming the system stays in tact with the retention of Saunders. We will never find a more capable/reliable QB than Campbell to come in, learn the system and be on the ready should something happen to Palmer. Palmer could go down just as quickly as Campbell did last season and without a trusted backup, our hopes of getting to the playoffs could be dashed once again!! Also, we dont have the luxury of draft picks this year. Our FA acquisitions need to focused more on defense than trying to find a #2 QB…

Don’t know, Rockstar. Only repeating what I’ve heard and read about the guy. Payton has a heavy hand in that offense. Not sure how much of a role his o-line coach plays in the actual planning and implementation of that offense on game day. I think I read about Charmichael that he didn’t start calling plays until Payton hurt his leg and was confined to the booth. While Charmichael remained the primary playcaller after Payton came back, word was that Sean still made the calls at critical times.

Reminds me of something I read about the New England coaches, and why they tend to fail on their own. The prevailing thought is that Belichik relies relies more on his coaches for information than actual participation in gameplanning. They don’t make many decisions over there, and maybe aren’t as ready to do that on their own as they could be if they were more involved in that way.
