Fassel replacement hired; Saunders on the move
By Steve Corkran
Wednesday, February 1st, 2012 at 6:44 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Dennis Allen once again is sticking within the AFC, with particular interest within the AFC West, when it comes to hiring assistant coaches.
Allen hired Steve Hoffman as the special teams coordinator today. That fills the vacancy created by the departure of John Fassel to the St. Louis Rams.
In other news, Raiders offensive coordinator Al Saunders has interviewed with the Kansas City Chiefs for their offensive coordinator opening. That indicates that Allen has no intention of retaining Saunders in any capacity — he already hired Greg Knapp to be the offensive coordinator — or Saunders isn’t interested in coming back in a lesser role than the one he filled in 2011.

Hello?
February 1st, 2012 at 6:47 pm
With Ford fit an Moore and DHB & carson full camp etc man i think you would reconsider, Jacoby is electric, what would you want to pick up with a 3rd rounder?? just askin.
*************************
Legit question, and I would say a full-time starter at a position of need (RT, OLB, DB) rather than a 3rd string player at a possession of strength.
February 1st, 2012 at 6:49 pm
Whats this Hoffman guy all about?
February 1st, 2012 at 6:50 pm

NT, LG(Wiz to C), or a FS.
February 1st, 2012 at 6:50 pm
Nice, Thats why i ask ya JFB..
Pains me to think of drafting ANOTHER DB, considering Mcfadden,ware,DVD,Chekwa…..and Super Bowl player Sterling Moore… but it is a need.
February 1st, 2012 at 6:51 pm
Let’s just hope this new ST guy can teach our punt returners how to run up and fair catch a bad punt, rather than wave everyone off and watch a 41 yard punt roll into a 56 yarder.
I liked Bones, but that ish has been ridiculous for years now!!!
February 1st, 2012 at 6:52 pm
Hoffman knows how to teach kickers and punters how to kick & Punt, but has no clue about return game and blocking schemes! Another brilliant hire…is iot 2013 yet?

He’s gotta be an improvement over Fassel. Our coverage and return units sucked. The only good ST components we had were Lechler and Seabass, and they’re there no matter who is coaching them.

TAKE A PRESSURE-WASHER TO THE PLACE..IT’S ALL GOOD.
February 1st, 2012 at 6:53 pm
dont we need to improve on Kicking an punting…eerr yeah your right @9
February 1st, 2012 at 6:53 pm
Im starting to wonder if any of these coaches we didn’t hire back even wanted to comeback.
February 1st, 2012 at 6:53 pm
I wonder what Dallas would give us for Huff?
I think Branch should be far enough into his film study to take over the FS position. I think that addresses the need to upgrade the tackling on the backend.
Draft a tough SS with our comp pick.
February 1st, 2012 at 6:53 pm
I wouldn’t be mad if we DIDN’T trade Jacoby, obviously when healthy he is a big-time, big-play guy (although I am not sure if he is an everydown player).
And if we had a full slate of picks, I probably wouldn’t consider it, unless an offer just blew us away.
But we have depth issues, no picks, and we need to move somebody, and we got some WR’s to play with.
I wouldn’t be suprised if we tried to package Murphy as well, but I think it would be the Kirk Morrison type trade, where we trade him to move up 20 picks.

With respect to the front office and coaching staff,
sometimes it’s just easier to knock down the old house and start over.
A remodel of an old structure that has massive issues is more costly and very inefficient.
Best to move out the occupants, bulldoze and start with a fresh set of blueprints.

for the past few years we have all been saying (and everyone else around the league) that this team has the talent to go far.. if that is the case the problem is the coaching staff…i say give reggie a chance and good for him for doing what he wants to do and not what the owner is telling him to do..whats the worse that can happen?..we go 8-8 again?..like that was going to change with who we have coaching this “talented team” anyway..

February 1st, 2012 at 7:39 pm
Len,
That’s the point. We are so close, we can win our division, and now we are going to rebuild the entire team.
I think the better choice would have been to keep the offense and the coaches (add a Few position coaches, etc..), and focus more and rebuild the defense.
February 1st, 2012 at 7:41 pm
Stop it already – all those talking about a new stadium. Previously, I elucidated irrevocably the reasons why the Raiders are out of the stadium game for a least 5 years: 1) 20 non-winning seasons out of the last 29, with 10 non-winning seasons out of the last 10; 2) Raiders are 31st in value of all NFL teams, including revenue raising per season; 3) Raiders are unable to sell out consistently for the past 10 seasons, except when they purchased their own tickets; 4) the reorganization of the club is only beginning with no certainty of success.
Keeping in mind that the average price of a colisium now costs $1.5B, and that most municipalities are insolvent, and that much of the financing must come through bond receipts or tax dollars, the chance that a serial losing, as yet dysfuntional team, has leverage enough to pull off a new stadium deal, is approximately 0%.
Remember, the first rule of economics, according to me, is that value seeks its own level. The scales are now tilted against the Raiders.
I pose the following question: if you were suddenly the CEO of a development company, a mayor, councilman or supervisor of a suitable jurisdiction, would you vote to build the Raiders a new stadium? highly doubtful, unless you wanted to be greeted by a citizentry group wielding ax handles and tar and feathers. Also, the public in the past 5 years has rejected taxpayer infused stadium projects using public monies.
Mark was very disappointing at his first press conference with Reggie when he claimed his first order of business will be negotiate a new stadium deal, showing his inexperience and facile reasoning.
I say this: dream on pal, take another bong hit freckle face, because you will have a new stadium when pigs fly. Until you bring in 4 to 5 AFC Championships, and several Superbowls no one will listen at all. That is the way big money is.
Finally, if the transistion and reorganization doesn’t result in progress toward dynasty very quickly, the Raiders will be playing at a high school football field, like Kezar Stadium used to be.

they talk about how knapp is a good qb coach. he took a no name qb (yates) and they made it to the play-offs. i get the impression he may be grooming pryor(he is our back-up). knapp does know the west coast offense. i think he was limited his first round in oakland.
the west coast offense is pretty much the same league round. it’s whether or not knapp can scheme and make adjustments during games .

Wrong Mike. Stadiums have been talked about in LA (I live in LA) and Santa Clara for years and years now, but you won’t see the Raiders moving anytime soon.
Me a crack-smoker? never tried it. I don’t do drugs, nor do I drink.
The 49′ers may get a new stadium in Santa Clara, but the club will need to win more divisions, and a Superbowl, before that happens.
Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah: new stadium talk regarding the 49′ers and Raiders is cheap. I haven’t seen a ground breaking yet.
February 1st, 2012 at 7:58 pm
i always thought our wr’s ran to long of routes. everyone knew this. our offense was predictable. defenses would always have safety help because our receivers would run deep paterns. every team goes deep. even west coast offenses throw deep. pose the threat with the shorter pass. then we hit-em deep.
