Raiders interested in Packers assistant

By Steve Corkran
Wednesday, February 1st, 2012 at 11:06 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders reportedly have requested permission to speak with Green Bay Packers cornerbacks coach Joe Whitt Jr. about the Raiders defensive coordinator vacancy.
Whitt Jr., 33, has spent the past four years with the Packers and worked with new Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie during that time.
NFL.com says the Raiders have asked the Packers for permission to let coach Dennis Allen interview Whitt Jr. Allen is seeking a replacement for Chuck Bresnahan.
The Packers have the right to deny the Raiders permission, given the position Whitt Jr. would interview for is not a head coaching job. Whitt Jr. also was with the Atlanta Falcons, in 2007. He coached in the college ranks for five years before signing with the Falcons.

Just like the valiant effort the fans did by putting up a billboard to get Al to think about hiring a Gm.

We need to get Mark Davis to cut his hair!

We can’t let our owner be seen looking like oppie cunningham.

I propose that instead of whoever logs in first….
instead of saying Uno, first, did i get it, or whatever…

Joe Whitt Jr if hired for DC would be the only “unknown” new guy.

  15. Hardline Says:

There must be a correlation between the Packers melting down in their 1st playoff game, and them jettisoning many of their staff members onto the Raiders.

If they were any good Packers would have retained them.

It reminds of the deal between the Pats and us for the slacker Richard Seymour. If he was still great do think Belichick would have dumped him ???

  16. Hardline Says:

didn’t the packers’ secondary suck this season ?

  17. djohnnyg Says:

I actually thought we’d get more Packer guys than we have/will get.

  18. RaiderWeaponX Says:

Packers had that agressive attack style D and led the League in picks by a looong shot had like 27 or sumthin. 2nd place teams tied with 18.

GB also got burned alot and gave up big yards and such. Offense saved them and allowed them to head hunt by putting up points to make teams throw and chase them.

Not a bad plan IF our O is good and ours could’ve been last year. Started out pretty good.

  19. lefty12 Says:

We were 8-8 the last 2 years. Most on here say with better coaching our record would have been better and we could have made the play-offs.At his press conference,Allen said this team had the talent to win now.Yet if someone says we will field a lot of the same players, with a few improvements ,they are told we are doomed to 4-12.That logic makes no sense.

    WTF are you talking about?

  21. Hardline Says:

packers gave up 320 yds per game.

  22. RaiderWeaponX Says:

Bad D but generated turn overs big time.

    “Attack style”

  23. RaidO Says:

Getting Joe Whitt Jr could mean running Dom Capers 3-4 zone blitz scheme.

    I like that

  24. Hardline Says:

The Ghost of Al Davis, #20

Okay Ghost, I’ll put it in basic terms so even you can understand it:

If you owned a business, and had employees who were top performers in the industry, would you allow them to be pirated away from you by another company ??

    Probably not.

2nd scenario is, you allowed these employees to go, since they were underperforming, and caused your business to take a serious loss in revenue.

Conclusion: If the staff of GB was so great, why did they melt down in their loss to the Giants?? Answer is, Reggie and crew lost their focus and underperformed.

I doubt the Packers were sorry to see them go, and dumped them on us.

    Understand ?

  25. Hardline Says:

Now we have, or will have, most of the GB staff rejects, period.

  26. Hardline Says:

These same rejects under-performed this season, causing GB to lose in the 1st round; now we have them.

  27. lefty12 Says:

Does that include their OC who became the HC in Miami?

  28. Hardline Says:

not sure Lefty. what is your opinion ?

  29. lefty12 Says:

You can change your name, but you can’t change your spots.

  30. Hardline Says:

Not sure you are talking to me about name change. But for the record I had to change it since I was banned from the blog under my old name.

  31. lefty12 Says:

    What was it?

  32. Hardline Says:

You should know; you are a bright guy, lol.

  33. The Ghost of Al Davis Says:

What I’m referring to is…who are these rejects you speak of? You said they’re “jettisoning many of their staff members onto the Raiders”

You talking about McKenzie? He was well regarded in many circles and the Bears wanted to hire him.

Who else are you referring to besides Whitt, who we haven’t hired yet? Who are these many staff members? Please do tell.

  34. MrLdotGreen Says:

Packers defense was weak bcuz of da lack of pass rush-da secondary still led da league in turnovers-dat says a lot about their secondary coach-SIGN HIM

  35. RaidO Says:

Could be good if Joe Whitt Jr is going to run the zone blitz scheme. LeBeau, Capers, and the late great Jim Johnson all ran/run that. Maybe a 3-4, 4-3 hybrid Allen talked about.

Never would of had a blitz happy d when AD was around.

    No Manusky

  41. joker94583 Says:

Thing is the Packers have multiple playmakers on D and still gave up 300+ yds a game and couldn’t stop anyone. The Raiders have no playmakers and couldn’t stop anyone either. It comes down to coaching and neither team has anything to write home about. But it is February so not much can be determined yet. The Raiders WILL experience growing pains on both sides of the ball. All new coaches and many new players.

  46. raiderzmaverick Says:

Stupid to get rid of Wylie. I think that Allen should look at which coaches produced a good result and should have kept them. Offensive Coordinator did pretty well. Keep him. O line did GREAT (turned a bunch of misfits into a top unit).
Special Teams I think did pretty good (we had 3 in the probowl). Why dump him?
    Defensively I understand cleaning house.

  47. dcraiderfan Says:

You know fans, Spuds messed up by hiring this guy Allen. I don’t see improvement for the Raider Nation except the bottom of the heap for the next 4-5 seasons. This team is still stuck with Palmer, Seymour, DHB and none starters. You can say that Allen went to two rounds of playoffs and the defense still stinks. Ask yourself this question? Why did Denver let him go? It can’t be the defense? Look out for another disappointing seasons in the Not For Long league starring the Raiders!

  48. raiderzmaverick Says:

dcraiderfan…The Broncos had no choice but to let him go. Anyone being interviewed for a HC job has to be allowed to do that.

It’s only the assistants to Coordinators or other hires for assistants that can be blocked.

I don’t know about Allen as a HC. He might be good. I mean he improved the defense, but it wasn’t like astronomical. Other people I think would’ve been better, but I can give the benefit of the doubt.

What I REALLY don’t like is Knapp for O-Coordinator. We know for sure what we’re getting and it’s not good. He’s been there before many times and has never succeeded. I mean Knapp was O-Coordinator for not only us, but also Atlanta before us and Seattle after us and each time the BEST he did was 16th place offensively and generally it was worse than that. 2 times he had the absolute WORST (#32) offense in the league. I don’t care what players you have, if you’re creative and can work out what they do well you can always not be last place if you’re smart and creative.

If we had C-Wood, Tramon Williams and Sam Shield we’d ballhawk, too. I might add that Detroit dropped 400 passing yards on them, and the Giants shredded them twice – one in the regular season and again in the playoffs – Hakeem Nicks TORCHED them. Manusky is looking better and better…

keep in mind we have an explosive offense…could it be handcuffed by a WC offense or more consistent?

    ===============================
Up until Hue Jackson came alone we had been HORRIBLE on Offense for YEARS. Two good years on Offense doesn’t mean we now don’t have to worry. Our offense was better than the sum of its parts last year.
Our QB was either a dropped QB from the Redskins or a retired came-off-the-couch-in-the-middle-of-the-year QB.
Our RB was injured and Bush showed he can’t last more than a couple games before tiring.
Our most productive WR (DHB) would at this point be a #3 on most teams.

Over half of our line wouldn’t start on other teams (Our C, RG and RT).

Our other top two WRs “have potnetial” but have never caught more than 35 balls in a year and were injured half this year.

And despite all of that we still made a top 10 offense. That took creativity which our current offensive coaching staff is lacking.

And I don’t see Knapp being creative enough to adapt his “style” to the potential talent we have right now on offense.

How consistantly did you see Ford or Moore getting open on short routes? How did you see McFadden do under Knapp when he played his first 2 years under him?

  52. Carl Weathers Says:

    Good morning Nation!

Glad to see we are bringing in a “Hall of fame” strength and conditioning coach, plus we sandbagged the donkeys!

*Miller, who last worked in 2005 with Allen for the Atlanta Falcons, interviewed with the Broncos and John Elway earlier this week, according to CSNBayArea.com. Shortly after interviewing with Elway, Miller heard that his friend Allen may get a head coaching job in Oakland and decided to wait before making a decision.
    ~from sbreport.net~

    *found this too:
Al Miller, a member of the inaugural USA Strength and Conditioning 2003 Hall of Fame class, enters his 20th season as a coach in the NFL and his eighth as strength and conditioning coach of the Falcons. In his role with the Falcons, Miller develops and implements the team’s workout program which is tailored to the individual needs of each Falcons player. It is this attention and dedication that has been one of the biggest factors in helping limit the number of serious injuries Falcons players incur throughout the season.

Maybe this is a secret plan to somehow get Charles Woodson back. I’m down with that =D.

  56. cayman_raider Says:

couple things…. I’m all for coach Allen. as far as his D not being astronomical last year… the only reason tim teblow could have as many come back wins… is cause that defense kept them in it, and they were on the field a lot. as far as our D personel. i think our guys are better than theirs (with shawnessey and houston healthy on the ends) so it should be an improvement.

ON SPUD MCKENZIE: isnt it the fans who have been
screaming for al to step down and get a GM. well now we got one and he’s cleaning house and letting his guys call the shots. cant win if you dont gamble, but I think he’s being smart about it. owners hire gms to run their business, the gm hires the guys to run departments. if they already have good employees not being managed well (refer: discipline) then that has to fall on the losing ways of management.

ON GREGG KNAPP: i’m iffy about this one too… I like al saunders, and I hate the fact of him going to KC. but in fairness… when he was with us yea, shat, but look at his “employees” you think jamarcauss, dante, mcCowan and andrew walter were even capable of running water, let alone leading an offence. They had to “dumb down” the playbook for the idiot on the field running it. He was center stage in the Lane Kiffin/ overhead debacle. He was offered the Interum head coaching job and said he wanted no part of it….and he probably meant how the place was being run…… I think it shows something about him coming back and the changes that are being made.

No post season for ten years, labeled as the most dysfunctional sports team in that period. I’ll take a change from the top to the bottom. win, lose or tie, Raiders till I die.

Khalif was a starter in Jacksonville but he was also nicknamed Kawhiff because he gave up so many sacks. How often do starting calibur LT’s even get the opportunity to test free agency after their rookie contract is up, much less not even get an offer from their original team. That says a lot. Khalif NEEDs to be replaced, Satale SHOULD be upgraded, a strong push up the middle is the worst thing for your QB and Center should not be your weak point. Coop will be ok for another year. He is very consistant in his mediocrity, which is ok for now, there are other fish to fry.

  61. Carl Weathers Says:

Cayman, I’m not a fan of the Knapp move but all the others seem solid so far.

Knapp’s previous 3 offenses ranked no better than the bottom ten of the league.

Is our personnel finally a good fit for him?

  62. nycraider Says:

Very surprised by all this panic on the offensive side of the ball. regardless of scheme we will be fine. DMAC and Palmer never played together and just that alone should create positive vibes for 2012 with respect to the Offense. IMO, Campbell played good not great for the first 6 games of the year but DMAC was spectacular and was on his way to being a top 3-5 RB in the nfl.A WC offense or zone blocking scheme isnt going to stop good players from making plays. Dmac if healthy will succeed and I feel our Oline is the best weve had in 10years. I also feel DHB proved he can run the 8-15yd route and make those catches consistently. its been a long time since we had a wr put up the numbers DHB did this year. Then add denarius and jacoby to the mix and were have a very capable core of Wrs.The only concern I have is picking up a WR who can make a difference in the redzone. a plaxico burress type would help us .
The real concern for me is the defense. I hope Allen is up for the task and I hope reggie can bring in a whole new core of defensive players. Reggie needs to bring in a playmaker and a leader.the needs are so great on that side of the ball its amazing. My hope is allen and reggie can pair up and make our defense average this year. That would be a big improvement from the dunits of the last 5-7 years..I remain optimistic for 2012 because if we improve on D we will make the playoffs. On offense, players make plays and we have enough talent to make plays regardless of scheme.

Not sure how you can say that, when all 3 of those were starters for years before they came here.
    =======================
I say that because of the contract offers. Khalif Barnes was paid a very small contract and had no competition really to sign him. Stalle was traded for a (6th round?) pick. Maybe he’d be able to start on a couple other teams. Similar with Charlile. No real competition to sign him = wouldn’t start. I think as a unit it played better than the individual parts.

    ======================
Knapp’s offenses are jurrasic. They’re out-dated. They might have been good 10 years ago. His last 3 OC stints have been horrendous. Never ranked above #16 in yards or points in 8 years as an OC since SFO…typically ranked around 24-26. Two times in the late teens. Two times #32 (dead last).

How many rushing teams have you seen win the superbowl in the past 5 years?

How many of the top 10 Rushing teams even made the playoffs this year? I’ll give you a hint. Over half didn’t even make it.
Being a top 10 rushing team means nothing now. 8 out of the top 10 passing teams made it though.

You guys act like we have something to lose. We were third place in our division. Hue lost 4 out of 5 running everything and nobody wants him. Get it. There’s nowhere to go but up. Not to mention our payroll and no picks with this short sighted w
    in now philosophy

There is another option to going up and that is down.
There is no guarantee that by changing everything as far as roster etc. that we NEVER even get back to where we are now.

Is it more blindly optimistic to think this team just elevates the D to “average”, keeps most of the offense intact, and we win the West and see what happens in the playoffs, OR is it more blind to assume a 1st yr. unproven GM, and an unproven 1st gig HC will be able to build a contender from the ground up?

We KNOW that if the defense had simply made a few stops…stops that most every other team in the league would make, we would probably would’ve been at least 10-6 and hosting and probably beating an injured Pittsburgh team

The D blew Buffalo (one stop and we win), Detroit(98 yards). We KNOW this.

  132. 1960AutumnWind Says:

Latest word is the Raiders will have a ZBS line coach and a power block line coach working together. In other words they are going to devise a hybrid system.

Secondly, any decent OC will use the talent he has. Reese is good out of the backfield so expect a lot of designed short passes to him. Expect more timing routes because that is a WC thing and Palmer is good at that even though he is not a WC QB per say. Also expect deep balls. Farve played in a WC but he threw the bomb too. WE are to black and white here – the Raiders coach has been talking about hybrid and a fast attacking offense. I am telling you that means a lot of play action. More than you typically see in a true WC system. Instead of the 3 step drop quick throw you will see two steps HO fake then another step and a quick throw. These guys are real professionals with full authority now. They are not as stupid as you make them out to be. They do whatever it takes to win and mixing up schemes and confusing defenses is always a good idea! Do you really think all those OC’s were wildcat coaches when that became a fad but look at all the OC’s that dabbled with it. Coaches that have survived in the league evolve and do whatever it takes to win. This is not college where you have systems like the Ducks or whatever. I see blitzing 3/4 teams often line up with 4 linemen and rush 3 and I see a 4/3 send 6 – the idea is to not be predictable.

Totally agree! I believe during/since the Superbowl in 2002 the Raiders were consistently out coached because of traditions and hangups we had. That includes this year even with Hue because he had legacy defense issues and other hangovers from needing to be “vertical.” I guess I would have been happy with Hue with his own staff but I am happy with this too.

The point is if you watch carefully you will see plays where we were zone blocking last year (on a supposedly power blocking team). I would bet you would also see power blocking on Houston but I did not watch them much.

Dennis Allen doesn’t seem like a square peg in a round hole type of guy.

JF right now Palmer is a QB throwing about 2-3 INTS a game. That is the bigger concern besides the system. I really don’t see West Coast dink and dunk with Palmer but we will see.

    ==========================================
Because he’s stuck with that same offense for the past 15 years despite it not showing any signs of life in his last 3 stops. If he was going to learn from his mistakes he would’ve done it by now.

He couldn’t figure out how to use Vick, or any offense since then actually.

If he would’ve learned he would’ve gotten better production.

I guess wait and see. I’ll be the happiest guy if I’m wrong and we improve on offense. We SHOULD improve on offense. With an offseason under Palmer’s belt, our WRs more experienced and having 3 good ones now. Having McFadden (at least for a while). No reason if were used smartly not a top 5 offense.

What teams have the Top 5 defenses?

That Alabama/LSU game was pretty defensive!

  318. RaiderRockstar Says:

Kevin Greene is one of those high-motor guys who could really be contagious like he was as a player. He is now a linebackers coach for the Packers, having a big hand in the development of Clay Mathews Jr.

The former 3-4 outside linebacker could also do wonders for Kamerion Wimbley and Aaron Curry. Greene is a pure Dom Capers disciple, playing for him with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Carolina Panthers.

Now he’s in Green Bay, bringing pressure with the bump-and-run coverage behind it. New Oakland GM Reggie McKenzie also knows what he brings, which puts Greene on McKenzie’s radar.

However, he’s not higher because there are some better candidates, and I’m not sure Greene would leave Capers.

Pepper Johnson is now a defensive line coach for the New England Patriots, as a Bill Belichick disciple. However, he really comes from the Bill Parcells coaching tree since Belichick himself comes from there.

Johnson was also an inside linebacker for that vaunted New York Giants defense in the 1980s and 1990s. His experience there would give really give 2010 first-round pick Rolando McClain something to listen to, as I’m sure McClain would be going back home to the 3-4 under Johnson.

McClain and the Parcells/Belichik coaching tree has Johnson on the list.

Our new HC is no shrinking violet…the Raiders will be Dennis Allen’s team…he’ll make sure his coaches are on board with his way of thinking.

  323. RaiderRockstar Says:

Mike Singletary is an excellent defensive mind who comes from the Ryan coaching tree. I say Ryan because he played under the father, Buddy, with the Chicago Bears, then was son Rex’s linebackers coach while he was the defensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens.

Singletary led Buddy’s 46 defense, a variation of the 3-4, so there’s no telling what he would cook up. He was never a coordinator, which probably would have helped him as a head coach with the San Francisco 49ers.

Singletary also coaches with the same fire and passion he had as a player, which is needed for this defense. That’s why I have him on the list—his resume and personality make him an excellent defensive coordinator.

You can also look at the defense that Singletary helped put together in San Francisco. I don’t know if the Vikings would even allow him to interview with the Raiders.

Look what he’s done for Patrick Willis—what would he do for McClain?

In my book, it would be an excellent hire.

  325. RaiderRockstar Says:

Winston Moss in every way is the best candidate to take Bresnahan’s spot as defensive coordinator. He is from the Dom Capers coaching tree, which means there will be all kinds of blitzing with bump-and-run behind it.

Moss is the linebackers coach in Green Bay where McKenzie just came from, but their bond goes deeper than that. They are both Raiders, having played for the team, and Al Davis loved his former players.

    =======================================

Yup. When DA said he would be a “game manager,” it means that he usually won’t be calling specific plays, but we WILL be running his kind of football. And offensively, if Knapp’s recent past is anything to go on, it’ll be classic Raiders: power running with an occasional 15-yard hard out pattern to keep defenses from stacking everyone in the box. Palmer has the arm to run that kind of offense, too.

Green bays line and front 7 staff were there to shut the run down. their secondary made plays. Our front seven gets at the qb… hence the run stopping problem. if our young guys can step up and follow the old, “bend don’t break” philosophy of d I think we would have won 10 games this year…. we broke too much. The most prominent D phased game I remember is the texans game… we got the pick in the last seconds…. because huff broke on the ball. If we had the organized coverage against the bills we win that game. I love the fact we have a D minded coach, he needs someone who can develop players and have a philosophy, the coach can worry about the execution…. thats what he’s good at.

Wylie was a person I believe deserved to stay. He did a really good job with a patchwork line. They allowed the 4th fewest sacks in the NFL despite playing ahead of two pretty imobile QBs and playing with an offense that threw deep quite often.

  423. qodrn1 Says:

    Taxes are a pain.

You have a yearly income. You own x-amount of taxes.

Some things let you lower the amount due, but you don’t get to keep it.

Home interest is one. College costs are another. Wierd credits the gov allows are others; some of these you get money back despite taxes. Any money paid for health care is another biggie, if you can use Schedule A to deduct it. This includes the bucks your employer make take out of your check to pay for your plan. Taxes are another thing, such as property taxes. Another is part of registration fees. Some bank penalties are deductible. Some loan penalties are too, like if your payment was late, as long as you paid it during the year. Many, many charitable deductions are missed. Driving to a meeting and back is often missed. Anything “donated” such as clothes, books, equipment all has value, even if not working.

If you bought a high ticket item during the year, say a dishwasher, etc. the sales tax can be added to the standard deduction even if you don’t itemize. Computers, televisions, etc. all fall into here.

Keeping receipts is very good policy. The sales tax levels today most likely will run a family over the standard deduction.

Sorry, registration fees for cars, boats, and the like.

No, I was saying that I didn’t know much about him except that last year the defense majorly regressed under him in SD. But, he did a pretty good job (around 13th-15th) while with SFO (above middle of the pack). But more that I think Pagano will be hands on and I think he’s a GREAT hire as a HC. DMC would bring in a 2nd and a 5th-round pick this year…or a 2nd this year and a 3rd next year.

Trade DMC + Re-sign MBush = Excellent draft strategy
    —————
The only logical trade for DMAC would be for an established player. Too much unknown with the draft. I’d be pretty mad if we traded DMAC and he runs wild with another team and we get some guys with potential that never live up to it.

  482. HayesDaze37 Says:

I feel ya, Dakota — But you know I think the kid’s never going to hold up. If we keep him, of course I hope he’s selected to the Pro Bowl every season.

DMC’s career is probably 50% over already…a starting RB with 8-years of service is long-in-the-tooth in NFL years. And even then, he’s typically not the runner he was in his first few years.

I say DMC’s value is as high as it ever will be with the Raiders…mainly because I don’t think he’ll stay on the field more than 10-games a year…no matter how great he looks when he’s out there.

For all the complaints about Condo taking up a roster spot…at least he plays. If Jacoby Ford and DMC can’t stay healthy, they need to go…even though they both can be great. Otherwise, we’ll soon have half of our “impact players” on Offense just occupying space on the bench.

The next thing ReggieMcK should say publicly is that ALL Raiders players are available for the right price (they are already, but he should throw it out there publicly)…and then see who steps up with enquiries.

I personally feel the Raiders aren’t that far from a winning record…rebuilding year or not. A few trades, and a little more added (healthy) talent, and we’re shored-up.

To those who keep advocating trading DMAC…please include in your post what picks you would accept in return AND who you would realistically draft with those picks. In a few years we’ll be able to grade your proposed trade. I’ll go on record now as saying keeping DMAC is the way to go. I predict he rebounds from his injury and will prove himself to be an elite RB and the Raid’s BEST player.

I’ll also predict that by the end of next year, we’ll be including Slowlando in discussions of ‘greatest BUSTS ever’ and it won’t be because he visited Pam Anderson’s plastic surgeon.

I am not part of the trade Dmac legion but if I was, I would not trade him simply because he is injury prone. People who think you trade a RB for having foot issues are total idiots. Look at the entire league, all top flight running backs miss time (Foster, Peterson, CJ, etc…)Dmac had a mid foot sprain, those dont happen every damned year, he hasnt had a knee, a neck, or concussions, those are reasons to trade or cut somebody. I dont think the Vikings are trading AP for picks and he has had injuries all throughout his football career.

If you trade Dmac, you trade him if you get a Carson Palmer kind of deal that will improve your ball club. I just checked and the last decade no SB winning team has a had a star top 5 rb per say. You can win SB’s without a great running game, but you better have a good QB, a great passing attack or great defense, one or the other. Right now, the Raiders dont have either of the two, so if you trade Dmac, you trade him to improve in those areas PERIOD

    ==============================================
No. Unless you believe that retaining the current OC has no bearing on continuity. Unless you think that bringing in a new OC with an entirely different playbook and scheme promotes continuity.

Don’t know about you, but I was pretty satisfied with the O’s performance last year. I was looking forward to seeing what would happen with Palmer in place from day one, and a healthy DMAC and WR corps.

Was hoping to keep most elements of the offense intact. Was hoping DA would mainly concentrate on fixing the defense and McKenzie would reshape the staff and personnel on that side.

    DUMP SLOWLANDO.

I actually read Romo’s book. He wrote in there when he got to Denver, he helped change the nutrition habits of players. Before he got there he said team meals consisted of McDonalds. He changed them to rich in protein fat free foods. He also got everybody to buy in to AES nutritional products. That is why he claims the Donks turned it around, when those changes took place. He claims he also got everybody to buy into his offseason conditioning program which consisted of lots of stretching and running wind sprints all day (100, 200, then 400 meter sprints).

He probably spiked those AES protein shakes with some nandrolone or something.

ZBS is a big deal if Oaklands going to use it as a “base” because you can run what ever you want but if the players aren’t suited you have to go get them and then get them to gel.

I believe his point is that, while people are some freaking out because our new o-line coach comes from a team that ran mostly ZBS, there is no reason to suggest that we are abandoning power blocking altogether.

I made this point yesterday when folks were jumping off of bridges because the o-line was going to have to “learn a whole new system” and it would set the team back. That McFadden couldn’t be effective, and on and on.

NFL teams are scheme-diverse nowadays, both offensively AND defensively. Situational football is the deal now. The last holdover to the predominant scheme was probably Al Davis’ approach to defense, and we all saw how effective THAT was over the past several years.

It’s just like the WCO, which is causing its own group of suicide victims in here. There are many variations; Young was a mobile QB that ran the system. Favre was not a mobile QB, but that’s what they ran in GB when he was there. Both QBs won a lot of games, both are in the Hall of Fame.

    ————-

It’s not that it doesn’t matter. It’s that one isn’t inherently better than the other, and that most teams use both. Some teams lean heavily one way or another. Ravens are known to emphasize power blocking, Texans zone, etc..

Like with ANY position in the NFL, certain players excel at different things. With the offensive line, some players are better in space. Some players are better in a phone booth. Some players get to the second level quickly, others don’t. The key is identifying what a player is good at and then putting him in a position to use the strengths of his skill set.

With the Raiders, their linemen tend to be more athletic. Satele and Carlisle are along the lines of Myers and Brisiel. If the emphasis was on power blocking, Wisniewski’s best position would be C. With more emphasis on zone blocking, he’d be fit at either C or OG.

The Oakland Raiders have added seven coaches to the 2012 coaching staff, including three assistants who were with the Silver and Black last season.

Kelly Skipper returns for his sixth season with the Raiders and his fourth as running backs coach, while Frank Pollack joins the Silver and Black as offensive line coach. Steve Wisniewski will serve as assistant offensive line coach after spending last season in the same capacity, while Al Miller joins the staff as strength and conditioning coach and will be assisted by John Grieco. Defensive quality control coach Eric Sanders returns to the Raiders for his third season, while former Raiders fullback Justin Griffith assumes offensive quality control duties.

Skipper, who tutored tight ends for the Raiders for two years before taking over running back duties in 2009, oversaw a unit that ranked seventh in the NFL in rushing last season with an average of 131.9 yards per game. In 2010, the Silver and Black’s running game ranked second in the league in rushing (155.9 ypg.) and set a franchise record by averaging 4.9 yards per rushing attempt. The Brawley, Calif.-native joined the Raiders after coaching in numerous capacities at Washington State (2003-06), UCLA (1998-02) and his alma mater, Fresno State (1989-97).

Pollack comes to the Raiders after five years (2007-11) as the assistant offensive line coach for the Houston Texans. He helped tutor a unit that enabled the Texans to rank second in the NFL with a franchise-record 153 rushing yards per game last season. Pollack, who played nine years in the NFL with San Francisco and Denver, began his coaching career at Northern Arizona (2005-06).

Wisniewski returns for his second season on the Silver and Black’s coaching staff after helping the Raiders offensive line lead a potent rushing attack in 2011. He joined the staff after spending the 2010 season as strength and conditioning intern at Stanford. Wisniewski earned eight Pro Bowl selections and was named to the NFL’s All-Decade Team for the 1990s during his 13-year playing career with the Raiders.

A member of the USA Strength and Conditioning Hall of Fame, Miller brings two decades of NFL coaching experience to the Silver and Black, having previously coached for the Atlanta Falcons (1997-05), New York Giants (1993-96) and Denver Broncos (1985-92). Miller, who began his coaching career at Mississippi State in 1980, also served in a strength and conditioning capacity at Northwest Louisiana (1981) and under legendary coach Paul “Bear” Bryant at Alabama (1982-85).

Grieco comes to the Raider staff after serving as head strength and conditioning coach at the University of Louisiana at Monroe for two years. While at ULM, Grieco was named the top strength and conditioning coach in the nation by the Professional Football Strength and Conditioning Coaches Society. Previously, Grieco oversaw the strength and conditioning efforts for 17 varsity programs at UNLV for four years.

Sanders returns for his third season with the Raiders and first as defensive quality control coach. A native of San Francisco, Sanders was an offensive assistant on the Raiders coaching staff for two years (2010-11).

Griffith, who played in 96 career games over seven pro seasons, begins his first season on an NFL coaching staff. Griffith played two years for the Raiders (2007-08), playing in 23 games with 14 starts.
